How high can the ring light go

weary sigil
#

as high as you can extend the pole I guess
from what I see in the tech specs it says
Adjustable length: 33 - 54 cm / 13 in - 21 in so 54cm would be the highest

did you manage to fix it?

Not yet

weary sigil

it's not hard
do you still have the Quick start guide?

spice halo
#

I don’t think so

weary sigil
#

the part I circled is for the camera and should be mounted "inside" (the middle) of your ring light, it's not an extension to have the ring light higher

#

if you look at the quick start guide I sent, the part I circled is the part that goes in the middle of the ring light to put your camera

Yes, it was End of Life back in November. See https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/4642544014733-Elgato-Legacy-and-End-Of-Life-Products
You may still find some with other resellers who haven't cleared their stock yet, but it is no longer being made.

haven't used my portable elgato light in a couple of months and came back to find it with a expanding battery. was in a dry, normal temp area like the rest of my gear - def out of warranty. do i just safely discard it? think Elgato support would offer any remedies?

wooden heath
#

Don't use it, just in the event you're not familiar with swollen battery issues - swollen batteries are a fire hazard, and lithium fires are hard to put out.
But yes, check with support through #official-tech-support . If nothing else they may have safe disposal directions (usually that just involved taking the unit or battery to a nearby location that does e-waste pickups as many are equipped for battery issues).
In theory the unit works with the battery removed, though I don't suggest removing that yourself with a swollen battery unless you have the means to do it safely.

I currently have these 2 cheap lights from amazon... would 1 Elgato Keylight be an improvement on 2 cheap ones?

wooden heath
#

That's a very subjective question, and depends a lot on what sort of lighting effects your trying to achieve.
Typically a two point setup with main light and another one to reduce shadows is pretty common - you could pair a Key Light with one of the others to achieve that. But there are a lot of other ligting setups out there as well.

#

I guess the furst quetsion you have to ask is what do you need that the cheap ones aren't doing for you?

modern torrent

I would assume the keylight is a lot brighter so it would light up my face a lot more. I feel even with these 2 lights there are still a lot of shadows and I'd like to remove as much of those as I can!

# primal crystal hello, I recently was gifted key lights and am having a horrible time trying to ...

For firmare update issues like this I would check with #official-tech-support . Aside from resetting things, and making sure you don't have any security apps blocking the connection (and that the lights aren't dropping off the wifi while trying to update), there's not terribly much info on resolving firmware update issues like this in the public, as it's usually pretty solid. I would suggest when you restart the lights before updating again leave them off 20-30 seconds before powering back on to make sure they fully reset before the next update attempt

wooden heath
# pliant marsh Alright, so I'm less than 10 meters from my Wi-Fi router. My computer is wired, ...

Any chance your home router updated in about the same timeframe? Sometimes we'll see issues where routers add features for power saving (Automatic Power Save Delivery / APSD / 802.11e) that can get toggled on in updates, which has been known to put connections to low bandwidth devices that infrequently communicate to sleep, in error. It might be that the router is putting the wifi link to your lights to sleep now, due to low activity when you're not using them. If that's the case check your router for power saving settings to see if you can disable them and if that improves the connectivity.

#

Hi I'm new here and writing because I've been having an issue since Wednesday that I can usually fix on my phone but I've ran out of options. I've scrolled back through this channel for some insight and found some interesting that I might need to look into but for now here is what I have:

Two standard key lights is my setup. They connect to my phone which then allows me to connect them to my PC and my streamdeck. Anytime the power goes out at home or if my internet goes down due to ISP maintenance, I have to reconnect my keylights to my phone. I always have been able to pair it without any issue (reset the keylight, use control center on my phone, select the lights, select the network, enter password, successful pairing). However, this time both lights will not complete the pairing. When I reset the lights, I am able to detect them as a wifi source, and the control center app is still able to find them as an available device. There is an attempt to pair and after 30 seconds it just says "accessory not found".

I have tried unplugging the lights for a few minutes, confirming my wifi password is spelled correctly, restarting my phone, holding my phone to the lights during pairing, disconnecting my router and modem, and the issue still persists. Two things that caught my attention while reading this channel are the wifi username issue, and possible security controls that are blocking the connection. I read something about the connection not working if your wifi username has a space in it? Mine is currently DD Home (example) with a space in between the initials and the word "home". I'm not fully convinced this is my issue because that username has never changed and I've been able to pair the lights in the past. Regarding security controls, I have no idea how to check if my wifi has anything blocking the connection from completing the pairing. I guess I'd have to check my router settings but that's a whole story. If anyone has any insight into this I'd really appreciate it

wooden heath
#

If your router is getting reset when the power outages happen make sure it didn't get set to WPA3 only for security as the lights won't currently run above WPA2. WPA2/WPA3 mode shoulf be fine.

final pasture
#

When I check my wifi details on my phone it says "wpa/wpa2-personal"

#

Once I press the "ok" to connect to either of my lights, the light turns off for about 5 seconds, turns back on, and after about 15 seconds it does one flash. After a total of about 30 seconds I get the "accessory not found" and I'm trying to figure it out. Unfortunately I'm having issues logging into my own router settings, so that's one of my last chances of figuring this out, because I feel like I've tried almost everything else

wooden heath
#

When you reset the lights are they showing up as their own access points after they reboot before you try to pair them with your network? If the reset correctly they should show up as their own access points in your WiFi list untill setup which would at least confirm that they're resetting correctly and the wireless radios are working as expected

final pasture
#

When I do a reset, I can go into my wifi settings, do a search for available devices, and yes the lights do show up as their own thing for me to tap and connect. I'm not sure if that's what you mean

When I try it on the CC app, I tap on the light, and it says something like "a temporary signal will be used to connect" and I accept. It then takes me to the list of wifi signals to connect to, I select my home wifi, enter password, and that's when the cycle begins of not being able to complete the pairing

wooden heath
#

When you look for local wifi points, not when you search with the app

#

So if that’s what you mean, yes. If you’re only searching with Control Center check for actual nearby wifi points instead with your OS

final pasture
#

Correct, my phone itself shows the light as a local wifi point. The "available via control center" pops up as a copy of my main hone wifi name sometimes, not sure if that's relevant at the moment

wooden heath
#

It lets us know the radios in the lights are likely fine, it’s most likely a software or router issue

#

Does the computer also have wifi or are you using the phone to get the lights onto the network so you can connect to the lights over the computer’s Ethernet?

final pasture
#

I'm doing the phone method you mentioned. Once it's connected to my phone, it shows up on my desktop CC which then allows me to connect the lights to my streamdeck and the Lumia program

wooden heath
#

Honest I'm unsure why the config on these is clearing to begin with, unless the router itself is resetting with the power outage. But I've no idea outside security settings what it might reset that the lights refuse to connect with it when they did before

final pasture
#

It's very strange for sure. I actually ended up having a small breakthrough and now have a different but similar problem

Due to faulty drivers, my computer wifi neve worked. I FINALLY got it to work and now I can confirm my computer has a wifi option. I can now use control center to detect and connect to my lights. However! 😂 I reset my light, found it with my PC control center, connected using my home wifi, and I'm getting a "successfully connected" message. The problem now is that I don't see that connection being shown anywhere. My stream deck is not picking it up, and I can't control the lights on control center 🤔 I had to step out of the house but I will continue looking into it once I am home

final pasture
#

Just here to give an update in case anyone has a similar issue in the future: it took multiple instances of turning off/on my router so my keylights could end up connecting to my phone and then my computer

But also a big thank you arcsane for helping out and responding + troubleshooting

Elgato Key Light 2.4 GHz setup explained (and why you can switch back to 5 GHz)

The Elgato Key Light only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
If your router uses one combined SSID (2.4 + 5 GHz), the Key Light often won’t connect.

What worked for me:
1. I split my Wi-Fi bands in the router (separate SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)
2. Connected my phone to the 2.4 GHz network
3. Set up the Key Light on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
4. After setup, I switched my phone and laptop back to 5 GHz

Important part:
Once the Key Light is configured, it stays permanently on the 2.4 GHz network.
Switching your own devices back to 5 GHz does not affect it as long as:
• the 2.4 GHz SSID stays enabled
• the SSID name and password don’t change

Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are still behind the same router / LAN, so everything works together normally.

Summary:
• Key Light → 2.4 GHz (always)
• Laptop / phone → 5 GHz (for speed)
• One router, one network, different Wi-Fi bands

This is expected behavior and the most stable setup.

wooden heath
# cinder tangle Elgato Key Light 2.4 GHz setup explained (and why you can switch back to 5 GHz) ...

Key Light Mk1 only does 2.4. The current Key Light Mk2 does 2.4 and 5.

Of the lights that are 2.4 only, it is just the original Key Light and Key Light Air.
Key Light Mk2, Ring Light, Key Light Mini, Key Light Neo all have 2.4 and 5 Ghz support.
Key Light Mk2 and Neo also support the Key Light Remote.
Neo also offers USB control (though since this requires powering it from the PC USB port it can limit maximum brightness due to power, if it's a standard USB port, not a high power one or Thunderbolt port).

Similarly once your lights are on the network as long as everything is on the same subnet, you can put your PC back on wired Ethernet as well, which you generally want to do for QoS if you're streaming. In a pinch you can also use the Mobile App to joing the lights to the network, then add them from the PC (though you may have to manually add them by IP that way in some cases).

#

None of the lights currently offer 6 Ghz or WPA3 support though, since that's a question that somtimes comes up

#

(WPA3 has been known to cause some hiccups with them on newer ISP provided routers that are defaulted to WPA3 only for some god forsaken reason - WPA3/WPA2 mixed mode is usually fine).

Right now I've been troubleshooting for the past hour, turning my router on/off, lights on/off, hard reset of the lights, turning PC on/off. I've posted here before and got it to work but this time none of the steps are working and I'm sure if I try for long enough it'll start working again. My guess is it has something to do with my wifi signal but I don't know how to confirm this theory. What kind of support does elgato provide? I'd hate to send an email and receive a generic email, but I'm not sure what to do

Without having used the lights myself, that's my best guess.
Could also try resetting the light's WiFi settings and set it up fresh in case some settings got borked somehow

Have you reset the lights to factory settings and added them to Control Center again? Is your Control Cetner app up to date? Are there any third party security apps running on your PC that might be interfering with the connection?

Im having trouble getting my elgato Key Lights to connect back onto my Stream Deck where I have knobs to dampen the light and turn them on or off. Why do these always disconnect? I set the devices into Pairing Mode, saw the light flash a few times then flipped the switch from the bottom point of pairing mode to the top position to turn them on. I went into my WiFi on my phone settings and it showed up as a connectable device and I clicked connect on it then I saw the button light back up on my Stream Deck and I was able to dim the lights once again but I tried connecting the second one and then the first one disconnected. Not sure if those are related in me turning one on that the other turned off or if it was a coincidence but eventually both stopped working and disconnected from my stream decks control.

Some modern Wifi routers have power saving modes where they put wireless connections to sleep when they don't see them in use. If you just turn off the light and power it on and give it 30 seconds to reconnect does it show up again? (This forces it to reconnect which should bring it active again). If so you may need to just turn off power saving features on the wireless router (aka 802.11e or APSD usually). Not all routers give that control - and there's a chance this is something else, so check if the lights just need a restart first.

# full token These things have been turned on for a while and haven't reconnected. I need to ...

The good news is the revised Key Light Mk2 supports Light Remote for when that happens. The new Neo also has physical controls, and even USB control (though generally in USB mode your overall birghtness is limited since it gets power from the PC). But yeah, check if your router has any power saving features that you can turn off that might be kicking the lights offline. Make sure Control Center is up to date and check the settings for each light to see if there are any firmware updates available that might improve the wifi performance. You should also to keep them away from sources of interference if you can like wireless security systems, cordless phones, microwaves.

Note the IPs of your lights in the settings and when they go down see if you can ping them from the Windows command prompt too - that'll help let you know if its' the network connection that's dropped rather than just the light or app not cooperating. If you have any third party security apps like McAfee, Bitwarden, etc, you may also need to add control center to the exceptions list.

Plugins contain actions. But if your monitor specifically has a plugin for remote control you might reach out to the maker for that on the marketplace support page for it for advice.

Key Light Air is discontinued - usually they suggest the newer Key Light Neo with a stand. Though Air does get slightly higher max light, it is limited to 2.4 Ghz Wifi, and doesn't support Key Light Remote or USB control

wooden heath

Air is the one that was discontinued (though it might be in stock in some stores still) - if you already have Neo, unless you need the slight brightness increase, you can just get the stand for Neo instead and it'll basicalyl be the same thing

#

eg, Air gets up to 1400 lumens. Neo only hits 1000 (on a external power supply - USB powered it's a bit dimmer depending on USB-A or C)

what would be good for a streamer which elgato products?

wooden heath

That depends a lot on your setup. The amount of space you have is going to determine part of how much light you need for example. As does the amount of ambinet light in the room, and if there's any particular lighting style you're going for. If you're just looking for ideas, with nothing in mind yet, check the #1290796142019219457 where folks share there setups and see if there's any idea in there you like

When waking up the PC from sleep mode there is zero audio actually going through. Sometimes killing the program and restarting it works, sometimes it won't, but forcing a PC restart always does fix it.

And sometimes when booting up the computer there will also again just be zero audio unless a program or system reboot is done

My two keylights lose their connection all the time. I reset them, for the first time my PC and my stream deck+ see them again, they are not connected. one of the two has already been sent to assistance but continues to have the same defect. now I do not know what to do to have my keylights working normally.

#

They should remain connected and when the PC turns on they should be immediately visible from both the PC and the stream deck, but this only happens after the reset.

wooden heath
#

Disable power saving on your router. A lot of routers will put low bandwidth connections to sleep, when they don't see traffic which includes Key Light. If it doesn't outright call it power saving, look for APSD and if you find it turn that off.

#

(also make sure when your lights are connected that the firmware is up to date)

I had done both of those many times unfortunately. Funny enough though I was able to fix it just a few moments ago. Long story short, not sure if it was the recent update or not, but in settings under Privacy and Security > Local network: Control Center no longer had permissions so I reenabled them. Not sure why it happened to me but if it happens to anyone else just check those settings.

There's isn't a specific channel for prompter / mounting systems so I thought I'd ask here.

Does anyone know if it's okay to use the solid arm directly clamped on the desk, for a prompter with facecam?

I've tried using the Mic Arm Mk2 and the base doesn't really work for the angle I need. The solid arm is just the right height but I'm not sure if it's okay like that, since I know it is meant to be clamped on a mount.

rich zealot
#

Weight Capacity Maximum 500 Grams

#

via Solid arm

#

prompter is Item Weight 0.69 Kilograms

#

factor in a camera, and the answer woudl be no.

#

it would be over capacity

rapid sand
#

Oh I see. The thing is, I believe that capacity is for horizontal use. Which would be different than if the actual arm was clamped vertically on the table. It's not the intended usage though so it's hard to evaluate. I guess the risk would be more about whether the clamp is stable enough?

Make sure you're turning the disc at the bottom of it, not the whole ball joint

#

The top part spins on the bottom part, the bottom part is what actually screws on

vague patrol
#

I was trying the bottom but it's hardly budging, also not sure if I should rotate it left or right. I've kinda tried both but there hasn't been a difference

vague patrol
#

I've tried both the bottom part of the joint and the stand screw mount

wooden heath
vague patrol
wooden heath
#

The upper ball joint is what you want to spin counterclockwise (eg the old fashioned lefty loosy).

#

If it's REALLY stuck you might need something like a silocone strap wrench to get better grip and leverage

vague patrol
wooden heath
#

You're turning the wrong part. The bottom disc of the top parts needs to turn against the whole bottom part. As you can see here that top ball joint has two parts, the bottom part is what screws on to things the top piece spins freely on that. So you need to unscrew that against the part from the lower ball joint on the master mount.

#

So that's the part you need to be spinning to unscrew it from the other ball joint

#

(specifically unscrew it from the bottom ball joint it doesn't come apart from the top)

vague patrol
#

so I unscrew it from the ball thing at the bottom or the disk beneath the top joint?

vague patrol
wooden heath
#

That part isn't really supposed to separate :/

#

I'm guessing you pulled the retaining screw on the ball joint itself?

#

You might need to get something to get more friction or leverage to pull the other two parts apart, or some penetrating oil - though the oil might mess up the rubber disc that should be between those two parts

#

Worst case order both ball joints from the spare parts site

#

I've never seen those parts get stuck like that

#

That said they're so close - is the rubber washer disk even installed there?

To be more specific, when I try to reconnect the ring light to the wifi it fails to reconnect

# limpid vine its the Light Strip Pro

Okay that one can connect to 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz Wifi (though not 6 Ghz, most people still aren't using that anyway). It'll connect as long as the network is 802.11 a/b/g/n capable, so unless you've locked the Wifi access point to 802.11 ax or ac specifically it should see most networks. It wont' be able to connect if it's on WPA3 (it only does WPA 1/2 personal for security).
Light Strip Pro is one of the products that is WiFi only though, so you'll have to toruble shoot the connection. Are you setting it up via the mobile app or PC/mac?

# desert solar Is there a way to bypass the internet connection for the keylights completely? B...

Check that your new router doesn't use WPA3 - the lights can't connect above WPA2. If it's the Gen 1 lights also make sure there's a 2.4 Ghz network you're trying to connect to, the originals cannot do 5 Ghz.

Aside from that depends on the model of the ligths. Key Light Mk.2 is compatible with the light remote. Key Light Neo can work over USB or via remote. Mini and Ring Light have physical controls. Air and the original Mk.1 lights are WiFi only though

desert solar
#

We use this one https://www.elgato.com/ww/nl/p/key-light
We tried a lot with internet settings, open networks, closed networks, different channels, etc. I think it is fair to say we tried every possibility that i know of, even firewall changes in router, giving the mac bypass etc.
But it keeps trying to connect on the old connection. Even to the pc is on the new router.

Elgato

#

And we have 2 of those, Sometimes left side only works, then it is random the right side that just works

wooden heath
desert solar

wooden heath
#

If you haven't fully reset it yet, here are the steps. It's important to wait on the light flashing and give it 5 seconds before turning it back on

desert solar
wooden heath
#

If it reset there shouldn't be any remaining data on it to connect to the old network. It should power up and initially show up as a wifi connection on it's own til it's setup.
After resetting it, give it 30 seconds and see if you see a Key Light network show up as available to your computer or phone.

#

eg, after resetting my ring light, it shows up as this after about a minute

#

that confirms it successfully reset to factory defaults

desert solar
#

idk what is happening then, pc has ethernet cable in the new router, the router has open network 2.4ghz available. So it should take that network right?
But even after reset it still connects to the router in the basement. If we are even able to successfully connect with it in the Elgato Application

#

We have reset it many times and waited different amount of times

wooden heath
#

And you're waiting for the full 3 flashes before you let go the II switch, and giving it the full 5 seconds before powering it back on to let it finish clearing the NVRAM?

#

What's your firmware version on the device when you're actually connected?

desert solar
#

If We would buy the remote, We have to connect it with internet. But after that is internet needed to control the lights or not?
