Anyone know how to fix your capture card if the PS5 doesnt wanna record? I turned off HDCP in setting and rebooted the system, but nothing wants to work. I also tested the card on another system to make sure the card isnt the problem, records just fine but PS5 seems to be the only thing with an issue.

Hi everyone, I'm using Elgato Capture Card Mk2 Pro. I just quit broadcasting and took a break. I wanted to broadcast again now, but I ran into this problem.

# static sorrel Anyone know how to fix this?

Usually that means you eiter setup an app like OBS to pull video at a higher resolution that whatever youo're capturing, or the card is only getting a USB 2.0 connection. Are you using the original cable, straight into a USB 3.0 or faster port?

past basin
#

I don' think so offhand, but #stream-deck might have a better answer

#

Volunteers are in and out through the day - you're best of describing your issue with as much detail as you can, and when someone is available who knows how to help, they'll get back to you.

#

If it was buzzing because the controller was plugged in you need a Ground Loop Isolator. Chat Link Pro already has one though - check that it's turned on, and if so try turning it off and on again to see if it clears up.

#

What part are you having issues with specifically? A common issue on PS4 is if folks don't turn off HDCP in the video settings so you might want to check that.
If you're just lookinf for the basic setup, the HDMI from your console goes to HDMI IN on the capture card, and the USB from there goes to your computer. If you have a monitor or TV you also want to see the PS4 on at the same time, it goes into the HDMI OUT on the card.

And does the PC have any Displayport to HDMI adapters invovled that might be throwing a signal error?

Okay if there's a display getting signal you probably have an EDID issue, and the Playstation isn't playing nice and selecting a mode that works for the display but not the card. Try using 4K Capture Utility or Elgato Studio, and change your input EDID mode to "Internal" and restart the console and see if that changes anything

So you only play your gaming PC through the capture software, there's no other monitor there?

Okay, so did you hook things up passthrough, where you connect that monitor to the HDMI out of the card, or did you set them up cloned where you clone your screen to the card instead and the HDMI OUT on the card is empty?

mental axle
past basin
#

So you're cloning the monitor to the capture card then?

past basin
#

Hm. If the cloning is setup I've got no idea where that particular No Signal screen is coming from then, since it's still not the one that that card should be shoing (seems you have the newer 4K Pro, not the 4K60 Pro Mk2)

I have a friend using an elgato 4ks capture card to capture a game he wants to stream from a PS5. From his controller to the capture card he has an elgato chatlink pro to stop his game audio doubling up in the capture. We've checked and the 4 pole end of the cable is in the controller. The headset is a wired headset.

I've tried using google kungfu but Im not strong enough. And without the hardware infront of me, Im at a loss as to what to check next

#

Has anyone had this issue before?

In OBS we're getting game audio

Apologies if this is obvious, hes new to streaming entirely and I've never used a capture card so its a bit like the blind leading the blind

Chat link cables do not capture your mic; they make a copy of “what you hear” in the headset.

You need a mic connected to the stream pc to capture your voice.

Hi! I recently invested in a 4K Pro capture card (the latest one, the one with HDMI 2.1 ports). On my Switch 2, with Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, when I put the game in Performance mode (1080p 120fps), I lose the signal on my PC. Does anyone have a solution? I still have the display on the HDMI OUT port, but nothing on the PC, whether in OBS Studio, Elgato Studio, or Elgato 4K Capture Utility.

past basin
final plover

past basin
#

That sounds more like the issue is the EDID, since your monitor is getting signal. Manual settings overrides a lot of that

#

Usually if the card isn't getting signal but the monitor is, it means a timing mode was selected from the EDID (That contains all the timings and display features like resolutions available) that works with the monitor and not the card

#

Since 4K Pro defaults to using Display for the input EDID it sometimes comes up

#

If it happens again try changing your Input EDID mode to Internal

#

But if it works, it works

final plover
#

My monitor is the Gigabyte GS27U for information

past basin
#

That woudln't really help tell here - you'd generally have to pick the EDID apart and compare it.

#

Some have basic timings charts in the manuals though

#

Advanced timing info isn't always listed thorugh (or modes that use DSC)

Does this show up in audio monitoring / preview too, or only recordings and/or stream? If this was made in OBS, then if you mute the card and add it again as an audio input capture device does anything change?

You may also want to try disabling Windows Audio Enchancements. Windows Audio Enchancements can be located in one of two places depending on your version and build of Windows.

First, you can check if enhancements are on by going into Windows Settings and checking under System > Sound and find your capture card. Go into it, and check at the bottom for any mention of audio enhancements or spatial audio (usually towards the bottom) and turn them off.

If neither are there, check the old Windows Sound Settings instead. Press Windows Key + R, type mmsys.cpl in the box that comes up and press OK. Go to the recording tab, find the capture card then go to properties. Check for any enhancement or spatial audio tabs and disable anything in there, and check the advanced tab to see if there's any enhancements or spatial audio options to turn off there as well.

Based on your audio hardware, software and Windows version and updates, enhancements could be in either of these locations, both or none. If they're not in any of them, you can assume enhancements are off

If you reduce the refresh rate on the computer you're capturing do you still get that effect? It might be a bandwidth issue, and setting the source down to 1080p120 or 60 could help identify that. In some rare cases you may also have to change the BIOS settings for the PCIe slot you're using to set it to a specific PCIe revision (the card itself is 2.0, so as close as you can get to that), to prevent some PCIE related hiccups that can come up. Partial green screens are usually PCIe related in my experience

but the same goes for OBS and I have tested your suggestion, also didn't work sadly

#

Which part, the Windows Audio Enhancements?

void acorn
#

as for audio enhancements and such i have them all disabled

past basin
#

Hm. Do you get the audio sutter on a different USB port? If your motherboard has multiple kinds of port (eg 10 Gbps, 5 Gbps) try one that's a different speed. That can help rule out potential issues with USB controller compatibility on some AMD boards

#

(eg most if not all of the ones that get that audio glitching on AMD/ASMedia USB setups are 10 Gbps ports)

void acorn
#

if it helps for troubleshooting, when i use the "listen to device" option on windows theres no stutter whatsoever

#

it seems to only be when i use any form of recording software

void acorn
#

actually i have one in the front but i heard its recommended not to use that one and to use the motherboard one at the back

past basin
#

Are audio enhancements off on both the new windows sound settings and the audio control panel? No spatial audio or anything on either, in either location?
Usually when it works with the Listen To feature it's related to Windows trying to modify the signal past that, or interference from another app like Steelseries Sonar that happens after the Listen To stage

#

That's usually because front ports on most cases are only 5 Gbps (newer cases this isn't always true, but the fastest ports are still on the back more often than not). It's still worth it to test - as long as the port is USB 3.0 it should be fine for 4K S

void acorn
#

just to make sure that this is what you meant by audio enhancements off on both versions?

#

ill test plugging it in the front port

void acorn
past basin
# void acorn

Those are on the headphones - you need to cehck if there are any on the capture card itself

#

(which would be on the recording tab in the control panel one, input section on the newer settings - if it's not in either you can assume it's off)

void acorn
#

i dont see any enhancement options for the capture card

past basin
#

Okay, it's not always there. Windows is weird about that. If it's not there, it's off

#

Only other thing that comes to mind is it might be an issue pulling the audio thorugh the video feed on that system. I'd try testing it in OBS, mute the card and add it again as an audio input capture so it pulls from the card's audio interface instead.

# zinc prairie Could you write me down this step by step?

So the basic idea is the card only supports 1080p, so we need to use software to get a 1080p copy to send to the card, even though the main monitor is 1440p.

The first thing you need to do is hook the card up in a way that it shows up as a different monitor. To do this, just plug the card into the GPU via HDMI and leave the HDMI Out on the card empty. Plug your monitor into a different port on the GPU. The card should then show up to Windows on the gaming PC as a different monitor - leave it in the Extended mode it defaults to here, where it shows up as a different screen entirely (you can use it like a second screen moving things over there if you need to). You will likely want to set the resolution on this virtual monitor to 1080p now, using Window Display Settings or your GPU software.

After this, the next step is to send a copy of the video over there. Since we're using different resolutions (1440p on the main monitor, 1080p on the capture card), we need to do this via an app. I genreally use OBS for this - it can clone a display without much load on the sytem (since you're not doing any encoding with this copy of it). So you can setup a scene in OBS, either with just a Display Capture for your main monitor or whatever games and apps you want in a n OBS scene. From there right click your preview and choose the choice at the top for to open the preview proejctor. Select the option for fullscreen projector and send it t youre capture card. OBS will now handle scaling down the video and sending a copy to the other screen (you can apply a scaling filter in the preview by right clicking it if you want to improve the quality of the scaling). From here OBS is now sending a 1080p copy of the video to the card, while your main monitor gets the 1440p copy. You should be able to use the card as usual on your streaming PC from here on out.

past basin
#

(to clarify something there the card actually also supports 4K, it just doesn't do 1440p since that resolution was uncommon when it came out and not something that has an official NTSC spec - easier to step it down to 1080p so you can get it at 60fps, intead of trying to scale up to 4K where you'd only get 30)

If you want to hear the PC at the same time while still sending the audio over the HDMI to the capture card going to the streamnig computer, you're going to need some software or a mixer to split the audio setup to go two places at once generally. You could look into the Wave Link 3 beta, since that doesn't require any activation hardware (current release version of Wave Link 2 still requires an Elgato XLR interface, USB Mic or Stream Deck+ to activate).
You could also look into something for sending the audio over your network instead, like Wave Cast (though that's a paid option)

Without context I can only guess at what you’re meaning… so I’ll do my best:
if you mean perceived latency in gameplay while capturing, the answer is the display you connect the capture card hdmi out to will not have any perceptible latency. Less than 1 frame, even on older capture cards.
Put simply, latency is not a concern on the passthrough display.
Latency is only something people deal with if they don’t have a display for their gameplay and are trying to watch the capture computer instead.

Modern capture cards might have less capture latency than older ones, but it’s still not zero and your computer and other factors add to that.
It will never be zero when play on the preview on the computer screen.

lone crypt
#

It’s not stupid, it’s how things have always been. It’s the only way to do it.
Passthrough has no latency because it’s just slipping off a copy of the video. The feed to the tv has no latency.

The usb video sent to the computer is being converted, interpreted by the app doing the video capturing, and then encoded and streamed. Lots of latency there.
The app has a preview showing what video is being captured.
But it will be latent no matter what.

errant ocean
#

ug

#

well

#

so theres nothing i can do then?

lone crypt
#

The intended setup for capturing a console is…
The capture card sits between the console and the display you’re playing the game on.
Two hdmi cables.
Console > capture card
Capture card > display.

Then the usb from the capture card goes to the computer, which streams/records the video.
But you don’t watch that while you’re playing. You watch the tv because it has no latency.

You’ve seen people capture gameplay from a console, and you haven’t seen the display they are playing on?

Like, you’ve been in the room with them? Or did you watch their stream and just assume they are playing on gameplay they see on their computer?

#

The gameplay seen on the streaming computer will be latent.
Like I said, some newer cards will have less latency so if they have a fast computer and a very recent capture card it might be less than what you’re seeing, but it’s not zero.

The ideal setup is that the gameplay passes through to a display that you watch while playing. You don’t look at the late video on the streaming computer.

That’s why capture cards all have an output hdmi…. For connecting to a display so you can see what you’re playing without latency.

lone crypt
# errant ocean i gige up atp

Ok, let’s back up, have you ever docked your switch before you got a capture card? Play on a tv or some other display?

errant ocean
#

mhm

#

i dont have a tv in my room tho so i cant do anythint abt it is what im understanding

lone crypt
#

Basically.
You need to set up so you can play your switch docked and connected to a display.
Then when you add the capture card it won’t look or play any different to you, and the computer can stream it.

The switch is different from other consoles in that way, since it can be played as a hand held device.
If you wanted to start streaming your play station you’d obviously already have a display hooked up to it, so you would be ready to go.

How can I fix this? Do I use a filter to help increase the volume?

Manage volumes with whatever app you are mixing audio in to send over your capture card.
If it’s still lower than you want, OBS can add audio processing to the source. It calls these filters.

I’m having an issue with the audio on my new Elgato 4K S and was hoping you could help.

I’m using the 4K S with my Xbox Series X and a Mac (M2). Video is coming through perfectly, but the audio from the Xbox sounds very thin and grainy, like there’s almost no bass. Compared to how it sounds normally through the TV/headset, the captured audio is noticeably worse and doesn’t have any low end.

A few details about my setup:
• Device: Elgato 4K S
• Console: Xbox Series X
• Audio input: HDMI audio (game audio only at the moment)
• Computer: Mac with M2 chip
• Software: Elgato capture software on macOS

Right now I’m using HDMI audio while I wait for the Chat Link Pro to arrive. In the Elgato software I don’t see any EQ or bass controls to adjust the sound, and changing the volume doesn’t fix it – the issue is the tone/quality (very tinny and flat), not just the loudness.

I have a few questions:
1. Is this a known issue when capturing Xbox Series X audio over HDMI with the 4K S on macOS?
2. Will using the Chat Link Pro and switching to analog audio likely improve the audio quality (fullness/bass), or is it mainly just for mixing in party chat?
3. Are there any recommended settings (in the Elgato software or in the Xbox audio settings) that I should be using to avoid this “thin” sound?

worldly canyon
#

For whatever reason when I select analog audio there’s no audio at all coming to streamlabs but if I choose the other option that isn’t analog (having brain fart can’t remember name) but then I have sound coming to streamlabs, but everyone says the correct settings are analog audio but the other works for me and not analog????? Anybody have any insight?

reliability is usually more important than speed- you generally only need yoru bitrate +20%, so if you stream on Twitch at 8,000, you could in theory get by just fine at 9.6 Mbps. (Though these thats that's a little low, you don't need gigabit). It's Streamlabs Desktop these days, they got in a whole legal dispute over using OBS in the name.
That said it works the same as OBS. You can apply gain filters, or use the advaned audio options to turn the volume up past 100%.
I'd check your Windows sounds settings though and make sure the card isn't turned down at the system level.
IT would help to know what specific card you're using, what you're trying to capture, and if it's a direct HDMI connection only or if you're using something like Chat Link or a MixAmp in the setup.

# worldly canyon So when I plug the chat link into my ps5 remote even though I can’t here sound f...

When using Chat Link, that's when you want to set the card's audio to Analog to use the 3.5mm jack on the front. If you're not hearing the audio through the computer yourself and the stream is though, you likely have audio monitor turned off - OBS does that by default in case you already hear the sound - sends it only to stream and recording for newly added deviecs. You can change that by going into the advanvced audio settings via the edit menu or gear icon on the audio panel, and set the card to Monitor & Output instead of Monitor Off.

But yeah, if you don't have a headset connected to the console at any given time you can just set things to HDMI audio instead.

How can I fix this issue?

Depends on the cause. Double check that the card is plugged in, preferably directly to the PC to rule out any issues from hubs or docks. Ideally using the origianl cable or another USB 3.0 or faster cable. Especially double check the USB-C end is all the way into the card. You should also check Windows Device Manager to see if it shows up - usually under camers though it may show up other places if it reports an error

Okay, 4K Capture Utility is older than Studio and still has the last firmware update, lets try to use that to roll it back. Close Studio, disconnect HDMI from the card, open 4K Capture Utility, wait for the "one moment please" to clear, then hold CTRL and open settings to bypass the firmware version check. You should then get the Update Firmware option - with any luck running that now will put you back on the last firmware, then you need to disconnect and reconnect USB on the card and we'll try it again

Hm. Holding CTRL usually overrides that.
Okay, I'd reach out to #official-tech-support on it. You can still force the firmware back by holding CTRL when you click update and selecting the files from the 4K Capture Utility installation director - but there's two files here, a base and an MCU, and I'm not sure what order you need to downgrade them in to prevent potential issues. Support would know though. They may also have other ideas why the card isn't lighting up with the new firmware on Studio

You could try to reflash it with Studio too, which is about the same process, but I expect it'll just tell you the same thing

camera might still be getting affected by overall bitrate cap. I'd suggest running a recording with higher bitrate settings at the same time to see if the camera has issues there too. If it's not happening in the preview I'd still expect it's the bitrate - real life video from a camera may just be more complex to record than game video in some cases, depending on what sort of game your'e playing, and show artifacting first.

same I just bought this brand new 4k s and the quality is absolutely terrible!!! makes me feel like I wasted my money especially due to the fact of me buying this one because my old capture card had this same issue out of nowhere

cunning birch

It happened immediately after I updated the firmware. The quality was perfect right out the box and after the update it’s static and grainy.

trim roost

the best quality i’m able to get is 1080p when usually I record 1440p

did yours work fine before on this software?

Yeah, it looked gorgeous. Installed a firmware update and boom, terrible.

This should be a black screen. The green is all grainy.

Hi

I need tech support for my Ps5 setup with Elgato 4K Pro in OBS

void orbit

Just for reference this what it looks like. My previous one was working find up until 2 nights ago. Not sure what changed

quasi kayak
#

@past basin shout out to you, my problem is fixed after the downgrade to website version

past basin
#

Glad to hear you got it working. If you've still got that ticket open with support I'd let them know that you got it working with the older driver in case there's an issue with the new one they have to look into

cunning birch
#

Do you guys know if it’s possible to get back a firmware?

#

Go back **

cunning birch

Seems like I updated firmwares in my device and that caused this issue and I don’t think I can go back to the old firmware now.

I just bought my first capture card, an elgato hd60x

How do i connect it to phone? I have a samsung galaxy s24 ultra

And i connect it up and the 4k capture utility just shows this static image

(This is not my phone screen, its some random one)

cunning birch

Almost wonder if the issue is its trying to output hdr and says hdr is on when I don’t have it on at all and never have.

#

I play @ 1440p x 120fps

past basin
# cunning birch Do you guys know if it’s possible to get back a firmware?

Yes. Generally go though #official-tech-support to handle that to be safe. You can in theory also pull the firmware from an older version of Studio as the firmware files are included with the app downloads (and select a file by holding Ctrl when you open the properties and click the update button). Sometimes there's an order to which to die grade first of the two parts though, so I suggest going though support

cunning birch
past basin
#

Studio

#

Where you open the device properties to get into the update option. Normally it's hidden if you're up to date

#

Ctrl will force it to show up

#

(the update button that is)

cunning birch
#

So I downloaded studio 1.01 (where the 4ks was first supported) and I do that and the update button pops up and it just says I’m currently up to date with the latest and same firmware

past basin
#

You have to hold CTRL there too

#

And it asks for the file

cunning birch
#

Okay I got there

#

Where would I find the firmware files

past basin
#

Again though there's two parts. I don't know the order in downgrading that one which is why you would want to ask support

#

But otherwise firmware files are in the install directory

#

Or you can pull them from the installer with 7zip

ionic musk
#

hello gang, so, my 4k s just arrived today and it is not going as well as i had hoped. at first it wasnt recognising that it was connected to a usb3 port, and when it did, it prompted me to update the device, and now ait doesnt show the input from my playstation anymore

Restart everything and reconnect all cables.

ionic musk

such terrible setup

#

like i dont understand why it doesnt recognize the usb3

#

still nothing

lone crypt
#

Give me details or I’m more lost than you.

There is a usb problem now? What’s going on?

ionic musk
#

that was my first issue

#

ive got 3 usb 3 ports on my pc, im using a usb 3 usbc to a cable and it just says its connected to a 2.0

lone crypt
#

Then your port isn’t what you think it is, or your cable or connectors are broken or dirty.

#

You can try other ports, or if you want something more diagnostic, download usb free viewer to see a visualization of your whole usb system and get details on the connection.

ionic musk
#

half the time i plug it in it just turns off after 2 seconds

lone crypt
#

My answer is the same. This seems like an insufficient port or cable.

ionic musk
#

And i disagree

#

Also doesnt explain why it doesnt show the hdmi input anyway

lone crypt
#

If it’s not connecting at 3.0 speeds then it won’t work. But I’m little unclear on what the exact behavior is.

Anyway, looking at it doesn’t prove anything.
You should download usb tree viewer and see what your usb connection and controller look like

ionic musk
#

did that

lone crypt
#

Ok there we go

#

So yeah, it’s being pulled down to usb 2.0

#

2.1 you see there isn’t a real spec; but that’s what the system will say when something is forcing the controller to fall back

#

I see a few other devices connected to the same controller, looks like a keyboard, a mic, maybe something else

#

I would try moving the capture card to a different usb 3 controller so it’s not sharing with these other devices

#

Could be one of them causing it

#

(Could still be cable, but we rule out other things first)

ionic musk
lone crypt
#

These other controllers exist on your system. We can see at least one more.
Maybe you need to refer to your motherboard manual to determine which ports are which.
And you could go the other way and move other devices to a different port instead.
(Might need to restart)

#

Maybe just remove them to test

ionic musk
#

took out every other device and then plugged it in and it shuts off after half a second

lone crypt
#

Did you restart?

I’m also wondering about usb power saving and fast boot.
If either of these are enabled on your system it can cause weird behavior.

But check usb tree viewer in each tested port and see what that connection speed says

ionic musk
#

i cant, it doesnt show up in the tree viewer anymore because it turns off immediately

#

i didnt restart yet though

lone crypt
#

That’s not enough power. Yeah these ports are acting funny for sure

ionic musk
#

ive turned off the power saving now gonna restart ig

lone crypt
#

Check fast boot, too. That can make usb ports boot up in a low power state.

ionic musk

lone crypt
ionic musk

#

Same thing if hdmi is in

Can we go back to that port?

#

Have you checked your motherboard manual to find where all the ports are, like what controller the rear ports use?

ionic musk
ionic musk
#

The other one in the screenshot is a virtual one

#

I downloaded parsec ages ago thats why thats there

lone crypt
#

Oh I didn’t even look at that, says parsec virtual controller.

Jeeze

#

Only one controller. That I’ve never seen before.

I would check that motherboard manual. Maybe there’s some switch in the bios or something.

You’re getting this power off behavior even with other devices disconnected?

ionic musk
#

Also, just checked fast boot is off

lone crypt
#

Has to be fixable…. It used to work on this computer, you said

past basin
#

One controller is about normal for laptops and smaller desktops. Gamer oriented boards usually have more than one.
That said that looks like Connection is the part brigging your speed down - that usually implies cable issues. Could be a defect. Is the cable you're using USB-IF certified? Do you have another USB 3.x device you could connect with it to rule out the cable? Dirt in the port can trip that up too. Or damaged pins in the port or cable plugs.

#

That said 4K S should actually work on USB 2.0

#

Since they added MJPEG mode to it. Just only up to 1080p iirc

ionic musk
lone crypt
#

They at one point had it coming in but showing a 2.0 warning

ionic musk
#

Tried a usb 2.0 and that had it flashing red like it does when not 3.0

#

Maybe i am gonna have to go buy a new cable

past basin
#

Does it still show up as a device in Studio?

#

Or have we lost that too?

#

I'm assuming you're just getting no signal or black screen in the app right?

ionic musk
#

Im still in my uefi settings lemme get back to normal

#

2.0 does seem to be recognized, but the hdmi still wont show

#

And im using the cable it came with

past basin
#

Does it show you a signal spec in the top left at all when you pull down the options there?

past basin
#

Black screen for the video or an actual No Signal screen?

ionic musk
#

No input signal

#

On elgato studio

lone crypt
#

Cable in what you’ve shown doesn’t look like Elgato one. It’s braided; are they using braided cables now?

ionic musk
#

Its the one from the box

past basin
#

Some of them are. I can't recall if 4K S's USB one is or not

ionic musk
#

Idk what else to tell you

Not the usb, hdmi

past basin
#

Oh yeah, the latest Elgato HDMI ones are braided

ionic musk
#

But the usb is also braided

lone crypt
#

Oh no inout signal is very different from not detected.
I got confused at some point. I thought it wasn’t powering on

past basin
#

What are you trying to capture with the 4K S here anyway?

#

eg, PS5, PC, Switch, whatever

ionic musk
#

Ps5

ionic musk
past basin
#

And what light is on the front of it now - I saw the video earlier with the HDMI out, white light is normal when there's no HDMI connection. With a HDMI in it should be blue or red for most things

ionic musk
#

Red

#

But its also red when no hdmi

past basin
#

Was HDCP already turned off on the PS5?

#

hm

ionic musk
past basin
#

If it doesn't show up in safe mode then that at least rules out most possible resolution issues from the source

#

Also do you have anything plugged into the HDMI OUT of the card? And if so does that get a signal?

ionic musk
#

Dont have anything in the out

void orbit
ionic musk
#

Weird thing is it worked before i updated the elgato

#

At least, partially

#

Not the usb3 but the hdmi

past basin
#

Can you pull out the side panel in Studio and chance the input edid mode to Internal

#

(thats accessed frmo the menu icon next to the gear at the top)

#

Then restart the console again

#

I wonder if the firmware tripped up the EDID it sends to the console

ionic musk
#

It appeared for like half a second

past basin
#

hmm

#

If you set it to custom EDID and select one from the list that matches the resolution you're trying to get does it again? Unplug and replug the HDMI cable to the PS5 if it doesn't pick up the change immediately

ionic musk
#

Some of them if i hover over it it goes black for a second and then back to no input

past basin
#

even after you reconnect things? I wasn't aware they'd changed to to preview the change on hover though, you used to have to actually select it first

#

EDIDs are broadcast out by the card to the connected device. When you change it you may have to disconnect and reconnec the HDMI cable or restart the device to get it to do the handshaking process to sync up again

ionic musk
#

It keeps flashing black every once in a while for a second

past basin
#

What happened when you tried the PS5 in safe mode earlier?

ionic musk
#

Nothin

#

Its still in safe mode

#

Well, again, apart from the random flashes of black

past basin
#

Ah, did you swap the HDMI out and in instead? In some cases it'll need to be resynced every time you change the EDID

#

That said if the card is on Internal EDID and the PS5 is in Safe Mode, that should be about as compatible as it gets. . .
Is it the standard PS5 or the Pro? I know the pro has a history of being oddly picky about EDID modes

ionic musk
#

standard

past basin
#

Honestly if it worked before at this point I'd probably reach out to #official-tech-support to get the firmware rolled back.
I'll have to hook up my own later to see if I can replicate this - I've seen some folks hit issues with the newest firmware, but generally not complete signal failure

ionic musk
past basin
#

You might also want to check another USB 3.0 cable if you can get one - where it was showing 2.0 earlier, it's possible the new firmware has a hiccup in USB 2.0 mode or something

ionic musk
#

do i need to change the base or the mcu number

past basin
#

They both probalby have to be rolled back. But I'm not sure the order to do it in for 4K S

iirc both files updated with the last firmware update

Gonna call them when they open in 2 mins here

Hey, so, I recently just got my Elgato 4K X in the mail. I managed to set up everything in OBS, there's video on there but I don't hear any audio. I tinkered around with the advanced audio properties by enabling Monitor and Output for the audio input device source that I named 4K X since you can't name two things Elgato 4K X. I still don't hear any audio after tinkering around.

One thing worth mentioning is that I'm not using the included USB-C to USB-C cable since I don't have a USB-C port on my computer since it's an older computer. I do plan on getting a new expansion card that allows me to use USB-C to USB-C cables instead of USB-C to USB-A cables, which is the cable that I'm using to plug in my Elgato 4K X into my computer: it's a USB-C to USB-A cable.

I also updated my Elgato 4K X firmware through Elgato Studio.

Maybe the cable is the issue? It's plugged into a USB-A 3.0 port on my computer, I don't know if that's worth mentioning but there's the information.

cunning birch
#

Well they said they’re gonna email me stuff to test my card and they don’t know the issue and apparently I can’t go back to a old firmware

lone crypt
# boreal mason Hey, so, I recently just got my Elgato 4K X in the mail. I managed to set up eve...

The connector doesn’t matter as long as the cable you’re using is usb3.0 or better data rate, and not some slower cable meant for charging devices only.

In OBS you don’t need to monitor the source to tell if you have audio from it, since you can see activity on the meter. (But that doesn’t hurt anything)

Sometimes audio doesn’t come through the video source in certain configurations.
Try adding an audio input source and select the capture card. That might work.

If not, we will check the cards settings in Elgato studio app.

boreal mason
#

Ugh, this is so frustrating. Sorry, forgive me, I don't know.

#

Also, I already have the Elgato 4K X added as an audio input source and that still doesn't seem to do anything at all whatsoever.

boreal mason
#

I just don't get it.

#

I even updated Windows.

lone crypt
#

Ok, well windows often breaks more than it solves, but hopefully not the issue here, haha!
let’s get the Elgato studio app, and make sure the capture card settings are correct.

And actually first , just to make sure, the console is set to send audio to hdmi. Like there is no headset connected to it. Physically to a controller or wireless, right?
And the console audio settings should be stereo pcm.

boreal mason
#

I also play on retro consoles, too.

lone crypt
#

You have audio on the meter in that app?

boreal mason
#

What do you mean?

#

I mean, I have audio all the way up in the app.

#

And I still don't hear anything.

#

Oh, you mean these audio meters?

lone crypt
#

Yes trying to figure out if the console is sending audio

boreal mason
#

It's worth noting that I have an HP Compaq Elite 8300 Small Form Factor Desktop Computer.

#

There's no 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports on here that I can find.

#

And I saw this Reddit post about what might be the issue.

#

Their post, not mine.

#

Sorry forgive me, I'm just trying to make sure y'all are aware of my situation with my computer and the way I set up my Elgato 4K X.

lone crypt
#

It works with 3.2 gen 1 port also, just with reduced resolution capability

boreal mason
#

I'm using a USB-C to USB-A cable that I used primarily for my Elgato HD60 S that I wanted to replace with the Elgato 4K X.

lone crypt
#

But if your port isn’t some flavor of usb 3.2 then it may not work at all

#

That’s a system requirement for this card

mellow dagger
#

Hey there please i need so help

I recently bought elgato 4k x and i am trying to set it up on my m1 macbook pro,

I am getting picture from it and its looking fine but no audio at all…

On the system audio settings it doesn’t show any audio coming in even though it recognizes the elgato as an audio source..

I am really lost

boreal mason
#

sorry, forgive me, i just didn't know someone else is having the same issue, but on a different computer.

#

Hmmm.

#

I'm starting to notice a pattern here.

#

Is there a low profile USB 3.2 Gen 2 expansion card available on Amazon?

lone crypt
#

Maybe. Make sure your motherboard is capable of using it on an available slot. Not all pcie slots are the same. Read your manual

boreal mason
#

Hmmmmm. 🤔

lone crypt
#

I thought you had picture, but no sound. So… makes me think your usb was fine….
So not sure what to think of that. Could be wrong

boreal mason
#

I have video, but no audio.

#

That's the issue. Video, but there's no audio.

cunning birch
#

I think I’m gonna just put mine back in the box and return it to Walmart. This is ridiculous.

lone crypt
#

That has me looking sideways at usb being the problem. But…. If you’re not meeting system requirements maybe that is an issue.

boreal mason
#

That might be it, then. There's No USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports on here.

lone crypt
#

I think Elgato studio is supposed to show a warning if the usb connection isn’t good enough.

Did you check the console is actually set to stereo pcm?

boreal mason
#

Yeah, everything seems to be fine console wise.

lone crypt
#

And it has audio on the tv if you connect it directly?

boreal mason
#

I'm trying to find a USB 3.2 Gen 2 PCIe x1 low profile expansion card.

#

Yeah, there's audio on my TV.

#

I have a cathode ray tube TV, lmao.

lone crypt
boreal mason
#

But yeah, it seems like I need to find a USB 3.2 Gen 2 PCIe x1 low profile expansion card.

#

Why x4?

lone crypt
#

Hold on, maybe not

#

The speed. I’m checking

boreal mason
#

Is it because of the lanes on the card's contacts?

#

And how those lane contacts on the card communicates with the motherboard on my computer?

mellow dagger
#

So is it just a defective unit?

boreal mason
#

I tried to buy an Elgato 4K internal capture card but it's incompatible with my computer because there's no available x4 slot available because it's blocked by my GTX 1050.

lone crypt
#

The length of the slot is the physical factor, then what pci gen it is. And then how many lanes.

#

Yeah see, the pcie capture cards need at least 4 lanes of pcie gen 2 or later

boreal mason
#

For both the internal and external capture cards?

lone crypt
#

USB is a different animal. But A usb 3.2 gen 2 card will need enough lanes to serve its ports with 10gb/s

boreal mason
#

So does it have to be x4 or can it be x1?

lone crypt
#

So depends on how the card is wired and how many lanes your motherboard is giving to that slot

#

1x of pcie 5.0 would be enough.
1x of pcie 4.0 would be enough.
Lower than that might not. And that’s on paper

boreal mason
#

Darn. I didn't think this would be this complicated.

#

Would this work well with my own computer?

#

It says USB 3.1 Gen 2, though. Not USB 3.2 Gen 2.

#

3.1 and not 3.2.

mellow dagger
#

Found a fix,
In the elgato capture device utility
Change the edid to merged

Try this

boreal mason
mellow dagger
#

Hope i helped, because i have been screaming and bashing at buttons for the last hour and a half and now i am calm as a baby

mellow dagger
boreal mason
#

I still don't hear anything.

#

I found this thing.

#

It's so stupid that this is the only thing I can find on Amazon, lmao.

#

That has a very specific x1 lane.

#

Although, oddly enough, I don't know if it even is x1, since it says 2X.

#

But it shows this clearly x1.

#

This is so infuriating, lmao.

#

oh, wait, what about this thing?

#

I found my motherboard.

#

Now what?

boreal mason
#

I'm still wondering if I can try and use maybe USB 3.1 Gen 2, or does it have to be USB 3.2 Gen 2?

cunning birch
#

Well I fixed my issue, bought a whole new capture card and it was indeed the firmware update. The program thought my PS5 was doing 1440p by 120 in HDR while I have had HDR off because I don’t use it at all and never have. So it was pushing HDR when I didn’t need it or want it and I couldn’t change it causing a bad image.

boreal mason
#

I'm wondering what the reduced capture resolution would be if I were to just use USB 3.2 Gen 1.

past basin
past basin
# cunning birch Well I fixed my issue, bought a whole new capture card and it was indeed the fir...

Ah - 1440p120 HDR would exceed 4K S's HDMI 2.0 spec (1440p120 SDR is fine though). That . . should have been cleared up with a PS5 safe boot though, which should have reset the video options.
Glad to hear you've got it sorted out in any case.
It's very odd that support couldn't rollback the firmware on that though tbh - if I get free time later I'll see if I can figure out how to roll it back myself. I know I can pull the older firmware form the older installer with 7zip (or just install the older app). But it's possible the MCU version changed enough that there's no safe way to step back that version.

past basin
boreal mason
#

What expansion card would you recommend I install that is low profile, has a x1 lane and is basically USB 3.1 Gen 2?

#

Or even USB 3.2 Gen 2? But since it's hard for me to find any USB 3.2 Gen 2 expansion cards that are also low profile and x1, and if what you're saying is that I can use USB 3.1 Gen 2 and it's basically the same thing as USB 3.2 Gen 2, then I don't mind USB 3.1 Gen 2.

past basin
#

Honestly off top of my head I don't know one. They might exist, but I've never looked tbh

boreal mason
#

The requirements for this build that I'm using is that it needs to have x1 lane and it has to be low profile because those are the constraints that I'm working with on my computer.

past basin
#

(it also shipped with a low profile bracket)

boreal mason
#

what about this thing?

lone crypt
#

Yeah if it’s actually 1 lane… and not just the size of the pcie slot…
Then I think it needs to be pcie version 4.0 or 5.0 to have room for the full 10gb/s

boreal mason
#

It says it only is able to share 8Gbps for both ports and not 10Gbps simultaneously.

lone crypt
#

Lots of confusing language around this, though. Because they use the slot size and the pcie lanes with the seam description often

#

Ok then yeah I think that means it’s a true 1 lane. Because pcie 3 is about 8gb/s

boreal mason
#

Oh, so then should I cancel this order?

#

If it's not going to go up to 10Gbps?

lone crypt
#

Man, honestly I just am not sure what the solution will be because I feel like the problem is murky.

void orbit
#

Ok I’ve tried some of the methods I seen above to help with my problem with no input signal (white light). I loaded up Elgato studio and changed custom EDID and Input EDID and now instead of the light be continuously white now it’s blue for 2 seconds and back white. Will pop up in studio for the same period and go off

past basin
ionic musk
#

havent resolved the usb 3 issue yet though

lone crypt
# ionic musk i found something, it really doesnt work unless you also have the hdmi out plugg...

In that case there is probably a wrong EDID setting, on top of other things.

When playing a console, you’d always want the hdmi out connected to a display so you can see the game feed in real-time.
Setting for that is usually display or merged.

If you don’t have a display connected (usually this is when capturing a PC, where you can duplicate the display), then the EDID setting is usually internal.

Be sure to restart/reconnect devices when changing EDID settings to make sure it all resyncs.

ionic musk
#

no thats the thing even on internal it needs an out

lone crypt
#

This could be compounding issues. Because when everything working properly they don’t “need” the output. But you want one anyway.

ionic musk
#

i do have one more thing though, on the box/amazon listing it says it can do recording in hdr too, is that dependent on cables or something? because mine outputs in sdr

elfin umbra
#

Is the following scenario realistic with Elgato Game Capture 4K X?
I lecture at a university, and I stream my lectures on Twitch and record them for subsequent editing and publishing on YouTube, not only for students. I would like to create videos in 4K resolution (4096x2160), at least for the recording.
However, I have a laptop with a maximum resolution of 2560x1440. In addition, there is a 1920x1080 monitor in the classroom, and I also have another portable monitor in FullHD. There is also a PC available (for recording or broadcasting, for example?).
The question is: can this Elgato device be used as a virtual monitor with 4K, record in that resolution, and at the same time play a reduced image on one of the monitors so I can see what I'm doing? Or is such a connection of Elgato Game Capture 4K X not possible?

lone crypt
ionic musk
#

so, turn off the tonemapping?

lone crypt
#

This might be easier to do all in the box, with OBS. Set a 4k canvas and just record internally.
But maybe I’m missing a detail about the source resolution of the presentation.

lone crypt
ionic musk
#

not really

#

the hdr tonemapping feature says it converts hdr in to sdr, so i assume turning it off makes it not convert

lone crypt
#

So then tone mapping would be off.
And the video format needs to be a hdr colorspace

ionic musk
#

i see i see

#

also, because now that it works stuff keeps popping up, i assume its normal for it to lag during certain scenes when theres a lot happening? im playing ghost of yotei and sometimes theres big lagspikes

#

or can i do something about that

lone crypt
#

The preview Being a little bit latent is normal. But it shouldn’t change.
If the lag is changing over time or as the visual changes, that indicates the encoder being overloaded or something. Computer not keeping up.

But you should watch the recording back to be sure. Preview will be not prioritized over the recording if there is not enough headroom in the processing power.

#

Passthrough display will always be real time, though. That’s what you’re meant to play on while recording.

ionic musk
#

im only on one monitor thats why i got the thing

#

but yeah ig thatll be it

lone crypt
#

One monitor is not the ideal setup

ionic musk
#

dont have the space for another on my desk

#

and the capture card seemed like the cheaper option

lone crypt

It’ll try its best to be as low latency as possible! And these modern ones are better. But the latency of conversion is never zero like a passthrough display. And it depends on the computer if the encoding is able to keep up.
Quality settings, etc.

2024 iPad Pro 11 inch
issue: connecting to elgato 4k pro, no signal

ipad, apple adapter usbc, hdmi, elgato capture card 4k Pro

I have this exact setup and it works, my friends is glitched. Has anyone had this issue and resolved it?

# elfin umbra Is the following scenario realistic with Elgato Game Capture 4K X? I lecture at ...

I would note that 4K X is designed around 4K UHD, the TV standard which is 3840x2160 - I'm actually not sure how well it would handle 4K DCI at 4096x2160 - I don't think I've ever seen anyone ask about 4K DCI support tbh.

Beyond that the capture card can set setup in cloned mode as a virtual monitor at 4K UHD. The app you're capturing or previewing will with handle scaling it to lower res screens, if you're using the USB connection.
It cannot scale the HDMI OUT port for passthrough signal though. So if both monitors are somehow connected to the laptop, not the card, it should generally be fine.

What do you mean by glitched specifically? Is it just the No Signal screen or is something else going on there? Also do you have the exact same model of adapter? I know there's a couple different ones out there and the iPads sometimes get quirky with their HDMI support depending on the adapter used - I think the current is A2119. Also do either of you have anything connected to the HDMI OUT port of the capture card? And are both of your Capture cards running the same firmware version and the latest drivers?

Capture cards have pass through also. People usually play on their TV while capturing on PC. Or they have multiple monitors on their PC.

Hello anyone had a problem with HD60 X with obs? In English, the audio gradually goes out of sync over time and ends up being delayed by about 10–15 seconds.

past basin
#

Mute it and add it again as an audio input capture source

#

OBS sometimes has issues pulling the audio thorugh the video feed from the card, best to pull right from the audio interface on it

Hello, can you help me to solve my problem with Elgato 4K X the problem i have on my Streaming PC is that it won't show the picture in OBS in full screen it shows minimized and when I click on it I can't enlarge it

This is how I connected it

  1. Game PC > GPU HDMI Out > Cap card IN,
  2. Cap card Out > Monitor In Gaming PC,
  3. Cap card plugged into stream PC connected with the USB C cable that comes with the Elgato 4K X,
  4. In stream PC installed OBS > Add video capture device > select capture card,
in this picture, where you can see the full screen image, it is my gaming PC and monitor

in this second image where the image is minimized it is from Streaming PC from OBS  still won't show the full image in OBS or to Elgato utility software

I apologize if I wrote something wrong, my English is not good, I use google translator

Yeah I’m just not understanding. OBS can send a full screen preview projector … if that’s what you want.
But usually you just use the smaller preview windows so you can see your controls. But I guess if you had a dedicated display you could see it bigger.

brittle yarrow

#

Yeah. So the game pc is duplicating the display to the capture card, which is what appears on the stream pc OBS, with the video capture device source.

#

That’s all correct

#

What you see on the source device is captured in the video feed on the capturing device.

brittle yarrow
#

sorry for my english i use google translate and for my slow writing because i am in a wheelchair

brittle yarrow
lone crypt
# brittle yarrow I am trying to set it to work as Extend not duplicated

Ah ok.
So in that case, on the game pc, the monitor that is the capture card gets set to extend desktop, and select a resolution and refresh rate you want to capture.

Now you need to run OBS on the game pc.

In this instance of obs, add a display capture so it has your main screen showing.
Now right click the preview window and start a preview projector selecting the capture card as the destination to project that preview to.

Now OBS is copying your screen and projecting to the capture card.

Then your stream pc will have it on the other end.

#

ok I'll try it now, thanks

Duplicate display also works, if you don’t need scaling. And in duplicate display your stream computer doesn’t have to be on to play, to give the capture card power.

You should also make sure the Switch 2 is set to Stereo sound. If it's set to something like Dolby Digital it'll sounds like a distorted mess if it captures at all

Can you check the card with Elgato Studio - in particular check if it gives you any warnings about PCIe bandwidth.

Device: Elgato 4K S
Software & Version: Elgato Studio 1.0.4 (843)
Windows/Mac Version: Windows 11
Console/Dual PC: Playstation 5 / Nintendo Switch 2
PC/Mac Specs: MOBO: B850 Aorus Elite Wifi7, GPU: Nvidia RTX 3070, CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Monitor/TV Model: LG 24ML600M/60TM
Are you using the cable included in the box? (Yes/No): Yes, tried for Input and Output with the cable.
Question/Issue: I'm losing my mind over here, I have an Elgato 4K S capture device, its plugged in using a USB C 3.2 capable port and it functions normally if I connect a console to the input slot on the card.
The issue is once I connect a HDMI into the Output slot on the card into my monitor it's telling the console that it is a 720p display and it cant send any signal at a higher resolution
The monitor is 1080p 75hz and it works normally without the 4K S in the middle, but once the 4K S is introduced the consoles are forced to believe that the display connected is 720p 60

THANK YOU!

#

I didnt know there was a pullout menu

#

I was actually shocked by the lack of options the software had but that makes more sense

#

Changing Input EDID to Display instead of Merged solved the problem so I'll leave it there for now

past basin
#

It still misses a few options compared to 4K Capture Utility, but they'll be adding things back over time.
Glad you've got it working though, good luck with it!

#

The main benefit is it has a newer engine so lower latency video, and higher frame rate recording are possible compared to the older app

#

Is 4K Capture Utility compatible with the UVC capture devices?

#

Could I use it if I wanted with the 4K s

past basin
#

It is not compatible with 4K S

#

It is compatible with the other UVC Elgato cards, but hasn't been updated since 4K S launched

#

Based on the fact they market 4K S for use with the be Studio app I don't think it ever will be either

Does anyone know why I would be getting a different aspect ratio between my 4k60 and passthrough to TV? The console I'm recording is set to 4:3 and it shows up as 4:3 properly on my TV, but on the 4k60's end it's ever so slightly wider than 4:3

#

This only happens with this particular device as well, no issue using other consoles.

#

(For context, it's a GameCube with a RetroBit Prism HDMI adapter)

Hello everyone . I’m using 4ks capture card for my ps5 that use to work and randomly stopped.

Problem/question: When I plug hdmi in out port the LED light is white with no signal. When I take it out of that port LED light is blue but still shows no signal.

What have I done:
• I’ve changed EDiD in elgato studio to internal with custom off.
•I’ve redone setting on ps5
• I am able to capture my laptop screen though when I hooked everything up just to see something else which is weird.

Any one have any ideas why randomly my ps5 connection would be messing up ? Thank you in advance.

lone crypt
# earnest rover Hello everyone . I’m using 4ks capture card for my ps5 that use to work and rand...

Sounds like EDID to me.

Internal is usually the right setting if you’re not passing through to a display, like capturing a duplicated display from a computer.

When connected to a console and with a passthrough display connected to the output, EDID set to display or merged; one of those is usually the right setting.
Make sure you restart and reconnect all devices when changing EDID settings to make sure they all definitely resync.

white or blue means things are working. status power on, connected, idle

#

when you say no signal... do you mean it's black, or does the screen say no signal?

earnest rover
lone crypt

then the card is working! Just isn't recieving signal

#

did you check HDCP on the source device?

earnest rover
lone crypt
#

are you using elgato studio; this is where you see the no signal screen? Any other warnings?

Could the video signal be out of range for the 4ks? do you have video on the passthrough display?

In the same breath if I only disconnect the HDMI from my ps5 and plug it into my laptop and use that as the source everything shows appropriately and works as it should.

And if I take the HDMI from my ps5 and plug it into my other monitor everything works fine.

The ps5 isn’t getting something to the Elgato and I just don’t know why at this point. Legit randomly just stopped working one day

lone crypt
#

Yeah that’s weird. Have you tried the merged edid setting?

And it working with the computer as source shows the usb is fine.

Next things I guess I would do is make sure VRR and HDR are turned off. On the console. Though 4Ks should be able to use those maybe something is out of range or gone funny with it

earnest rover
#

Same kind of scenario with merged setting. No signal when hooked to ps5 but when I switch HDMI to my laptop connects just fine lol.

lone crypt
#

Are they the same resolution? That VRR and hdr stuff?
I don’t know what to make of this.
