Wdym fixed….

#

Is there something wrong with it? 😅

past basin
#

No, though the macOS USB driver is getting changes on one of the macOS betas (can't recall if it's the 14.6 or the 15 one) that seem to be affecting it again, seemingly mostly fixing it, so we'll see what happens after that comes out. The fact their beta mostly fixes it seems to indicate the issue with the 14.5 change was on Apple's end though.

past basin
# tranquil blade Is there something wrong with it? 😅

There's issues with 4K X running in macOS and iPadOS in 10 Gbps mode specifically. There was an updated version of the mac utility released to fix it in 14.4 but the next update in 14.5 broke that. If you're on PC you don't need to worry about it, it won't affect you.

tranquil blade
#

Roger that haha

past basin

This looks like a timing issue - try going into 4K Capture Utility and changing the Input EDID mode to Display, under settings in the device tab. The monitor may be wanting 4K120 but getting 4K119 for example, based on what the source prefers. If you change the EDID to display it'll only pass along modes supported explicitly by the monitor's EDID, instead of trying to combine modes from the monitor and card which an fix some timing issues like that. I've also see similar issues if one of the cables being used is only specced for HDMI 2.0, though usually it'll just reject a 4K120 signal entirely in that case since it requires 2.1

tranquil blade
#

Okay last I remember I had it on display, and I’m using two Elgato branded cables that are rated for hdmi 2.1, one that came with the 4kX, and one that came with the 4k pro

#

When both plugged into the oled directly, it outputs 4k120 fine, it’s only when introduced via hdmi pass through that it does this

past basin
#

There's a couple causes here - first try disabling HDR on the console, as it can wind up with tonemapping effects when the PC Captures it in HDR.
If disabling HDR doesn't change it, check your RGB colour range - both devies need to be either full or limited to get correct image. If the auto detection fails you may have to set this option on your console, or in your capture software to be specifically either full or limited (you may have to try both, but dark usually means you need to switch to full because it's detecting limited but expecting full).

It does not happen at 60hz, and it’s an lg oled c1 48”

OBS should get audio by default, but if you want to hear it yourself you need to set the audio monitoring for the card in OBS to "Monitor & Output" in the advanced audio settings. If you see the audio meter moving but don't hear it, that's likely what you need to change. If you don't see it moving, try adding the card again as an Audio Input Capture in your sources

past basin
#

What capture card are you using specifically? If you're using one of the HDMI 2.0 ones, in passthrough, this is expected as HDMI 2.0 will cap 1440p at 144Hz generally. If you're using it in cloned mode, make sure you're cloning your display to the card and not the card to the display - playing in Borderless windowed mode can also resolve some potential issues in cloned mode.

tranquil blade
#

I’m currently at work, but off the top of my head from last night I believe internal makes the screen say “invalid format” and merged just says “no signal”

past basin
#

It might be worth checking if your card has the latest firmware when you get home as well. You can check that in 4K Capture Utility under the settings in the device tab. latest is 24.05.31 - if you've got one of the ones starting with 23, update 4K Capture Utility and then you should have an update firmware option there.

tranquil blade
#

I did 😭 I updated it to the most recent one last night 🫠

#

What’s odd is it worked several months ago when I was testing it, and I put it down for a minute, came back to it last night and now it’s doing this which is why I’m perplexed haha

past basin
#

Might even be worth trying it in a different HDMI jack in the TV if it has one - I know some of those are HDMI 2.1 only on specific ports.

#

I used to have issues with my old roommates TV not liking some formats unless it was specificially on HDMI 1 port. So if it worked before maybe it was in a different jack then?

#

Disabling G-Sync might help too - though that generally doesn't affect anything when you're not gaming iirc.

tranquil blade
#

Yeah I’ll give that a shot. I’m pretty sure it’s in hdmi one currently, but doesn’t hurt to recheck

past basin
#

Haven't forgotten, but Crowdstrike outage sadly ruined my weekend plans for testing stuff. I had that, as well as some camera effects stuff on the list of things I had to test for people. I'll see if I can get to it there in a bit

To confirm, you're trying to capture the iPad on another device, and not using the iPad with the new capture app to capture another device on the iPad right? iPad output formats get a bit wonky, though they usually just have odd resolutions, I'm not overly familiar with them cutting out like that. Does the setup work as expected if you connect it directly to a TV or something? We'd want to rule out that it's not an issue with the adapter or iPad itself, since you've already gone through two capture cards.

past basin
#

And the card was added to OBS as a Video Capture Device, not a Window Capture of Game Capture, right?

unique sleet
past basin
# unique sleet Yeah it works there but not obs for some reason. And hmm when I bring up the cap...

I just wanted to be sure you weren't trying to window or game capture it, but were using it directly with Video Capture Device.
Next thing to check is Windows Audio Settings if nothing is moving - press Windows Key + R, and type mmsys.cpl and press ok. Go to the recording tab, find the capture card and go to properties. In there make sure it's turned up and not muted in Levels - if that's fine, go to the advanced tab and remove the option that allows applications to take exclusive control, then press ok and restart - it's possible something else is holding up control of the audio on the card and preventing OBS from getting the audio feed.
If it's still not cooperating, make sure you have the latest drivers for the card from https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360027961152-Elgato-Gaming-Hardware-Drivers

unique sleet
#

I got the drivers and did all that and still nothing

past basin
# unique sleet I got the drivers and did all that and still nothing

Happen to have an OBS log you've uploaded through the help menu, from a session with a test recording? Can help narrow down what's going on there. If hte video is working the audio should be the easy part usually.
You might also have to go into properties for the card and make sure it's set to audio capture only

#

But is there still no motion on the audio meter for the card specifically?

That's a HDMI 2.0 capture card, it can't pass through 1440p above 144Hz. Are you using the card in passthrough, where you pass the HDMI into the card and connect the monitor to the HDMI Out of the card?

#

If you're using it in passthrough, try plugging the card into HDMI on it's own, and the monitor on it's own, and clone the monitor to the card instead. The GPU will handle the differing refresh rates

main nimbus
past basin
#

Make sure they're cloned in the right order - if you cloned the card to the monitor instead it'll get capped out at the card's max, instead of the monitor's. Also when cloning I recommend using fullscreen borderless instead of fullscreen because some game engines handle cloning weirdly.

Hello!

Somehow, the "Hdmi In" port on my Elgato 4k60s+ stopped working no matter what devices I connect to it:

  • same hdmi cord works for other devices
  • I used two different Capture cards with the same setup and did not have any issues.

Does the card work for recording in Standalone Mode? Or are you using it with PC only? What lights are on it when you have something connected. Also 4K60 S+ only supports signals at 60hz - make sure none of your devices are trying to drive it at higher.

Also when using borderless window in windows 11 turn on windowed optimizations. For games that support flip model presentation it will use that instead of the old bit model. Cuts some of the latency off

However, when i try to use my capture card through OBS, the gameplay freezes or doesnt even show up on OBS after a few seconds. it also has issues if my webcam is on the same screen with my capture card on obs as it doesnt allow my cam to be shown at all. does your display have DSC? Display Stream Compression (DSC)

4K X does not support the capture of video signals utilizing Display Stream Compression (DSC).

Early HDMI 2.1 monitors used DSC for higher resolution and frame rate capability. For example, monitors may use DSC to achieve 4K144Hz, while 4K120Hz does not use DSC.

If the passthrough is to a TV or monitor is working, but the captured video is black, DSC may be active.

Please try a lower resolution and/or frame rate.

it sounds like your audio isn't going through the mixer but over hdmi. so on your streaming pc, audio should be either installing elgato's game capture on your gaming pc, you can install sound capture and route the audio, or do this on your streaming pc. as this isn't going through your mixer. unless you're routing a line from your gaming pc to your streaming pc via the mixer. thing is I'm not sure where your line in is on this mixer.

1440p60 should work with the Neo. It'll convert the HDR to SDR for capture so that should be fine. Maybe try turning off Variable Refresh Rate if that's set in the Xbox video modes.
The fact passthrough to your monitor is working indicates the HDMI cable is good too - if you'd had a PC or Mac we could try to change the EDID input mode for ther card, but I don't believe that's available for the iPad app.
Does anything change if you set the Xbox down to 1080p instead?

Yeah, this sounds like an EDID problem, but we can't adjust that without a PC or Mac to run the appropriate app I think. I'm assuming you don't get anything in the app that says EDID?

What happens if you remove the external display and then disconnect the card from the Xbox and reconnect it? That should add least confirm if it's an EDID by issue since it won't get the monitor edid anymore

If it's 4K the extractor might only be HDMI 2.0 - but if you're only working with 1080p that should be more than enough. What happens if you move the extractor between the 4K Pro and the console instead of after it? That should at least narrow down if it's not liking the output from the capture card for some reason. Other than that make sure he consoles are outputing in stereo, not Dolby encoding or multichannel - it's possible the newer card is letting the systems detect different formats of audio.

# indigo maple Was wondering if the 4K X can do single PC setup? I've tried this but it lags a ...

There's not really a benefit to a single PC capture card setup. They only give you a HDMI input, which makes them useful for adding in stuff like consoles and cameras, or even sending video from one PC to another to be encoded - but there's no performance advantage over software capture like OBS Studio's Game Capture, as your CPU and/or GPU still have to do the encoding.
You should be able to do it if you wanted to though - though it sounds like you might be hitting issues where your GPU is getting capped. Do you only get the lag when you're actually recording or streaming? If so the GPU is probably capping out.

indigo maple

That is usually a sign that noise cancellation is turned on in your operating system? Are you on mac or PC?

Assuming PC, try disabling Windows Audio Enhancements. Three places to check:
1 - Press start, go to settings, system, sound, and find your capture card. Go into it and check towards the bottom of the options to see if there's any mention of Audio Enhancements or Spatial Sound, and if there is - turn them off.
2- Press Windows Key + R, type mmsys.cpl and press OK. Go to recording tab, find your capture card and go to properties. Check for Enhancement or Spatial Sound tabs - if there are any, turn the options in there off.
3- Same place as above, but under Advanced, make sure there's no spatial sound or audio enhancements are are listed - if there are, uncheck them.
After this press OK, and if there's no change try rebooting to make sure the changes take effect.

Windows is picky with cloned setup order, especially if you're gaming in fullscreen. You may have accidentally cloned the capture card to the monitor instead of the other way around which could cause issues. You can go back and try the cloning setup again - if say cloning screen 1 to screen 2 doesn't work, try cloning screen 2 to screen 1 instead. That should get the monitor to list instead of the card and the GPU can sort out the differences after that

I don't think your issue is going to get resolved with a hardware swap - it still sounds like an EDID issue, but that can't yet be set from the iPad app as far as I'm aware. Do you have a friend with a PC or Mac you can borrow to run the app you need to change the EDID setting on the card? Ideally try setting EDID input mode to Internal since it's the capture card not getting signal. The same app would let you run a firmware update on the card which may also resolve the issue.

If what Vic suggested didn't help, chec your refresh rate. You want a refresh rate that divides into whatever FPS you're capturing by whole numbers. Eg 60 and 60 (1:1), or 120 and 60 (2:1). If you try to game at 144 and capture at 60 fps (2.4:1), you'll get tearing because every few frames it'll generate the next frame while it's still partway through a refresh cycle for the video signal. If you're already using that, try enabling v-sync if the game has it.

Should work with any cable ending in a USB Type-C connector that's at least 5 Gbps / USB 3.0 or faster. Try to avoid any adapters that might drop it down to USB 2.0 speed - many USB-A to USB-C adapters will do that, if you need an adapter make sure it's 5 Gbps, but ideally swap the whole cable if it's an option to be safe).

(Some Neo products have integrated cables, which might be why you're getting mixed answers on that, but the capture card isn't one of them)

The fact it's not working solo with the PS5 is what's throwing me - Xbox I've seen be picky with the signal, but the PS5 is usually more compatible, especially if you run the 1440p tests from the video menus 😦

Yes but if you're talking tech specs, ignore the marketing and use the actual term so you don't trip people up. Ideally I usually just use the xxxxp listing to keep it clear.
Either way, no, if your monitor in passthrough is only 1080p, your signal going into the card is going to get capped at 1080p

craggy relic
#

I want my preview to have 0 delay or at least lower than 50ms

past basin
#

Avoid using MJPEG then, and possibly HDR depending on the setup. Ideally use HDMI passthrough to avoid the latency from video prorcessing entirely by letting it connect to a secondary display.

You may want to check that Windows Audio enhancements are disabled in case some audio app on the PC is interfering. 3 places to check, first in Windows Settings from the start menu, under system, sound, find the capture card and go into it - towards the bottom see if it lists audio enchancements of any kind, and if it does, turn them off.
If it's not there, check the older sound menus - press Windows Key + R, type mmsys.cpl and press OK. Go to recording, find the capture card and go to properties. What sort of delay are you talking about Cliqys? Audio/Video desync? Stuttering? Dropped frames?

#

Paul, that setup should be fine. I don't have a GoXLR to confirm with - but honestly til the skipping is sorted I'd remove the GoXLR from the equation and make sure it's playing okay through OBS or 4K Capture.
Some things to check - disable any windows audio enchancements. 3 spots to check for this - first in the Windows settings under System, Sound find the capture card, click into it, go to the bottome look for audio enchancement, if it's there disable it.
THe other two are in the old sound settings - press Windows Key + R, type mmsys.cpl and press OK. Go to recording tab in the window that pops up, look for the capture card, go to properties. Check if there's an enchancements tab (or spatial audio) and turn off anything in either. IF not, last place to check is the Advanced Tab. Check there for any enhancement options and turn them off. You may also want to try turning off exclusive mode - it's possible another app is trying to control the card and checking it every few minutes leading to issues (unlikely, but we're already in unlikely territory)

Hey thanks for getting back to me. Did all that and nothing different, no improvements, same behaviour.

Could there be something wrong with this card? Since installing the card, OBS and SL are both so slow when trying add sources, not just when adding the capture card but webcams or anything. (I set up a new scene collection to test).
Note that this is new motherboard and the issues are the same as the previous motherboard that didn’t have the recommended pcie slot available. This board does and it’s in a pcie x16 slot now.

past basin
# livid roost Hey thanks for getting back to me. Did all that and nothing different, no improv...

It's possible - #official-tech-support might be able to see that in the logs if it's the case, but trying to figure it out from community help would be an issue. I know adding sources in OBS can take a while sometimes if it's polling hardware for all available modes while its compiling it's list of options though - might be worth disabling the card (eg in Windows Device Settings) to see how that affects OBS performance and if it goes back where you expect. Beyond that it might be time to put in a ticket if the audio issues are still happening.

This happens with other HDMI devices connected right? If you haven't already tried swapping out the source device that's worth a shot too - I've seen examples of weird behaviors when the source has issues like grounding that an interfer with the HDMI on the capture card on the other end.

livid roost
past basin
#

Tested with direct connections with no HDMI switches and that too right?

4K X is s UVC device, it doesn't have specific drivers, so generally if you're setting a crash like that it's hardware or cable related. What firmware revision is on the card (found in settings under device, current is 24.05.31 - wait for "one moment please to clear before going into settings), and did you have #official-tech-support take a look already? Are you using the original cable? I haven't had my 4K X ever crash my system yet and I've had it pretty much since launch - the disconnecting and reconnecting is also unusual - you usually only see that if you're running through a USB hub or something that's having trouble keeping up either the power or data, if it's happening without that you should definitely have support take a look at it, or at least make sure you're on the latest firmware and check it with USB Tree Viewer or another tool (https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html) to make sure it's connecting at SuperSpeedPlus speeds on all of device, port and connection.

past basin
# north sierra My elgato is very laggy / delayed and it’s plugged into a 3.0 usb port

Which specific card are you using, and what do you mean by laggy - are you seeing stuttering, frame drops, audio/video desync or something else? What sort of delay are you seeing - it's normal for there to be a very short delay going through a capture card as the video has to be converted from HDMI into something the PC can use, then redrawn through the app on screen, but with the newer cards it should be quite short - say 2-3 frames of video delayed.

past basin
# unkempt olive im not alone with those issues ?

Blue screening is very uncommon with the external cards - it's rare with the internals, but when it does happen we see it more there because they have dedicated drivers unlike the UVC based externals. I don't remember the last time I heard of someone report an external newer than the HD60 S causing bluescreen errors that didn't track back to some sort of hardware failure (be it card, PC or cable) - didn't happen to get the Stop Code form the blue screen did you?
Mentioning you're not alone, where were you seeing the other comments on it causing BSOD's? I'm curious if there's a trend with the setups that might lead to a root cause.

unkempt olive
#

the code is DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE

past basin
# north sierra

So is the issue here lower fps? The video there does look somewhat choppy. Is it on the preview as well as the recording or just hte recording?

unkempt olive
#

i asked windows support to analyse minidump files

#

and they said that

#

This new minidump file also indicates that it is the Elgato USBVideo driver that is causing your system to crash, there are no problems indicated with your Windows installation.

past basin
#

They happen to mention which driver? 4K X doesn't use it's own since it relies on the Windows UVC one - that makes me somewhat concerned that the capture process is either causing something else to go down, or the 4K X was crashing your USB bus and eventually some other device was causing the BSOD as a result.

unkempt olive
#

i'm going to ask the driver

north sierra
unkempt olive
#

because as he said on the message he said that :

Elgato USBVideo driver

past basin
#

That would make sense with older cards like HD60 S that used Elgato drivers. 4K X is UVC based - you don't need a driver installed at all, just plug it in and run your video app. UVC drivers are provided by the OS. 😐
Though - I haven't gone back over all the history there - do you get the crashes if you use the card with something like OBS Studio instead of 4K Capture Utility? I'm wondering if it might be the app, not the card, that's crashing.

#

Since that might give a Elgato specific USB video error

unkempt olive
#

I also have a question, when you use it is it plugged into your PC constantly or do you unplug it and plug it back in every time you use your PC?

past basin
#

Ah, much as I dislike teams for it's tendencies to hold onto a card after you stop using it that shouldn't give issues past a reboot even if it did happen.
Yeah, it's going to be tough to narrow down there - if support had a chance to look at it they can generally pull some logs and have a better idea what's happening than the community help, but that can take a few days to go through.
I would suggest checking USB Tree Viewer https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/sections/5126053814029-Elgato-4K-Capture-Utility-Release-Notes and checking what the summary for the card looks like as that can rule out some USB compatibilty issues.
I might even try it with an older version of 4K Capture Utility like 1.7.11 to see if it's something specific with the current update (old versions are available here: https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/sections/5126053814029-Elgato-4K-Capture-Utility-Release-Notes ). Though does it crash out and do the USB disconnect and reconnect thing with the other apps too? I wonder if it's got a defect and is overheating or the USB cable is defective and shorting 😐

#

I know there were some issues with it a while back with certain motherboard USB Chipsets causing some audio hiccups, but can't say I've seen them crash the whole system for that to day - (not that I might happen anyway)

Looks good so far - is your PS5 set to 1080p as well? And is there any external monitor in the HDMI output? Does "Source" in the top right of 4K Capture Utility confirm the same resolution?
If that's all set, try changing the USB Transfer mode (this is a HD60 S+ thing only). Hold CTRL and open settings in 4K Capture Utility and try each capture mode in the Device tab to see if either improves the video feed's smoothness.

Yes, give me a second. I'm launching mine there now to get a screenshot of what it should look like.
Currently I'm on the latest 4K Capture Utility 1.7.13 - though sometimes folks wind up with issues on latest release. If support is telling you it's an Elgato USB Video driver that's the issue, that's the only thing I can see causing it offhand since otherwise it would be a UVC driver not an elgato one in the crash report

#

Card should show up in the list, then you can check the speed in the summary like this and confirm it's getting full SuperSpeedPlus speeds -t hat can rule out a number of potential issues

past basin
#

Yeah that definitely looks good for the USB - intel USB chipset too, so I've not seen folks trip up on that yet.
Doesn't 100% rule out that there might be a cable defect that could short the port. You might also want to try it in a different port or with a different cable if you have one about that's at least 5 Gbps (it'll work in a 5 Gbps port as well, with some options locked out, if you only have non- Gen 2 ports available).
I'd start with the Utility though - just to rule out software issues. Maybe when it gets up hit the Reset Defaults button in the bottom right of the settings too, to be safe

north sierra
#

its set to 1080p

#

alright yeah its on auto rn

past basin
# unkempt olive

Ah, that is indeed pretty crispy. Give me a second I need to check something on my own audio there - but one thing I'm worries about is how that card crashed when you connected the HDMI. Crispy audio could be an indication of a grounding problem in some cases too (which would also explain the card crashing when the HDMI went in). There's a few things we can try first though

past basin
# north sierra its set to 1080p

In the PS5's video setting itself? What does the source say in the top right, and does the input signal in settings still say 2160p?

north sierra
past basin
# north sierra

Yeah your PS5 is still sending a source signal of 2160p59.94 while the capture is at 1080p. That is still going to drop the fps coming in over hte card since HD60 S+ has no hardware scaling.

If that's what it is though, your audio issues will stop if you use one of the 5 Gbps USB ports instead (3.0, 3.1 Gen 1, 3.2 Gen 1) though you might need a USB-C to USB-A cable for that.

Ah - most cables are going to be 2.0 these days - only external drives and video devices usually come with 3.0. Pretty much have to go shopping for a 5 Gbps or faster one specifically.
Given you've got a B450 board I'm not sure if there were other issues with that or not either 😦 I had thought it was only the audio - you might be better off with the internal afterall just to avoid that USB chipset.
Person I'm checking with on the issue is offline for the moment so not sure when I'll have an answer on that.

Still stuck in high speed for some reason through - it'd suspect dirt in the cards port, or the cable is starting to fail from age. Happen to have access to a USB 3.0 or 5 GBps USB cable or faster other than that one? Also if you have other Elgato products like Stream Deck or Wave:3, be aware those would have USB 2.0 cables - does the cable you're using have a blue insert on the USB-A side of it?

Not without alternative hardware like a Mixamp or something, no. PS5 runs on a one audio stream per user method so the instant you plug in a headset it mutes all the other audio feeds. One exception is if you sign in a second controller as a different user - but that won't really work for things like voice chat, and you'll still need a Line In on the computer of some kind (most desktops will already have a line in jack), possibly with a ground loop isolator and an aux cable.
