Okay, I think I have at least a light explanation down:

So a few years ago, when I was trying to rename a character, I scoured Behind the Names for ones I might like. I found one I really liked, with a fitting definition, and I just kind of plucked it out of there without much thought. Clean, simple, not much of a to-do there, and that was that.

But lately, the past couple of days, I've been wondering again if I should rename her again, because now I'm worried that the name holds significance to people that I am not exactly a part of? And it's complicated, because I really love the name still! But I don't want to accidentally be insensitive or anything like that!

Sorry, it's a weird explanation, I know. It's just... heck. Extremely complicated to my brain. And it's weirdly stressful.

I know, it can be distressing when you realise a name could or could not be insensitive. Take a moment to breathe and think about it one smaller piece at a time. That’s what I did for a character’s name for a character I am basically inseparable from since she is over a decade old, to change it from a name I realised was not working for me anymore.

Take your time - it took me about a year cumulatively to figure out a name that worked, and once I found it, it stuck just as the first name did. Of course, at any time, you can stop that process if you feel the old name does just fine. You just gotta take it step by step… because a name is surprisingly important to any character! That might why it seems so unsually stressful, and I’ve certainly been there before with that character I mentioned earlier in here!

If it helps, I look for names from a baby name website. Unusual, I know, but it helps me if I’m stressfully indecisive. Wish you luck on this!

Character names are easy! You just need an idea of what your character is like (Say like... A birth season) and then you can go from there with either English names, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, blah blah blah... You get the idea...
(Lesst that's what I do! )

Changing a character’s name that has already got a name is a bit harder, though.
From personal experience you gotta:
A) Unlearn the old name from your brain (enough to not apply it outside of refrences)
B) Get a new name (The easiest part)
C) Make sure the new name fits
D) Learn the new name
And E) Apply the new name.
Buuuuut when you do all that, you have a new character name!!! Yay!

Character names for me are usually more complicated, but I write fantasy, so that's a given! My human names tend to be chosen to fit the character, though I'll also adapt their backstory to make it make sense for a particular region if it's necessary. And for the non-human characters (and those really weird humans who don't play by the rules), I just put sounds together based on specific minor rules.

Sky's easy, at least, for me. My skykids' names are canonically translated, so outside of Rosa (who I named before I came up with this rule - she also has a canon explanation), it's outright a word! So I have Shadow, Jag, Spark... Rosa's different, but I imagine that the explanation behind that is that she took a name that could mean 'rose' and changed a letter in it to make it a little more unique and personal.

I’ve been trying to do that more myself, lately! Like the dragon who existed just for an exposition dump actually will show up again and become a trusted advisor to MC3. The family friend innkeeper who was just basically there to provide the team a place to stay became one of my most important characters.

Heck, remember the character I mentioned before? She started off as a minor named character who was just there for set dressing, and then changed species and basically kicked her way into becoming my third main character.

I remember a dragon person ||(in my universe(s), there’s both holy/noble/whatever the highest title is with dragons - that look more like traditional dragons, and athrophormophic dragons that are equals with humans.)|| that originally was just a friend to the human, but then that human had created a whole plot revolving around another character in another universe temporarily breaking a universe artifact ||Swords representing universes|| and making their world where that human and dragon fall apart around them until the dragon was a ghost in the machine and his human friend transported to the same universe (Where she was roughly and changed along the way) where the artifact broke.

Thanks, I take great pride in my worldbuilding.
Many dragon people in my world ||(I mainly focus on the upper most sword [with feathery wings sprouting from the sides representing the light dragon of that universe] of the main four which point outwards like a big compass, which has three (technically four if you count the middle part) smaller swords within like a mini compass)|| are either one of five or so species:
One is very feathery, is stereotyped to be timid and wise, evolved first, and is mostly bald save for a few feathers in the formation of a ‘crown’ on their heads, and their lightweight wings.
Another has horns pointing outwards, is stereotyped to be aggressive and strong, has fur that wraps around their neck unless it’s always summery (which is when they just have the bumps on the back of their necks) and evolved second, and has a short, distantly related tropical variant along with the furless variant with more hook-like horns for catching fish more effectively.
A third is similar to the feathery variant, but with two sets of wings instead of one with only pseudo clawed hands on the top of their lower pair of wings, and evolved close to the first one, and stereotyped to be more aloof and carefree.
A fourth is the wingless one, and is rough, evolved last, rare, and stereotyped to be more gruff and older.
A fifth one is rare, has a smooth texture and sharp wings, and found in the icy regions. Not very polite to outsiders, that group.

i usually gain speed by using clouds, but thats it
