You must be referring to a seasonal spirit! You can't access their tree until they return as a Traveling/Returning Spirit. There's a new Traveling Spirit every two weeks, but this week the TS is Mellow Musician. Also, Piggyback Lightseeker's emote can only be used with friends who you have unlocked the emote with. It should be available after several unlocks in their friendship tree

Trade school, for one, or generally working your way up in a profession that doesn't require an education. Learning a profitable skill like programming without going to school, for another. Most options are less hand-holdy than college, but cheaper.
Additionally, you could get an Associate's degree to start with and go back for a Bachelor's when you have a decent job with that Associate's.

But also, take everything I say with a grain of salt because I went straight from high school to my Bachelor's so I don't have experience with this stuff

Well, I entered college right after HS. I went to community college for my prerequisites (highly recommend to save money) and then entered my Bachelor's program at university.

Also, a programmer is a different job than a software engineer! Those skills are still valuable, but plenty of people become programmers without degrees. If you want to be something higher level like a Computer Scientist/Computer Engineer/Software Engineer, you'll need schooling, but anyone can be a programmer. The only problem with that specific idea is that the market might be saturated since a lot of people get that same idea.

I would suggest you go through and do the Revival quests in Aviary Village (a new Home space!). Doing so will reacquaint you with the mechanics of the game, and allow you to go through several seasons that have happened during your hitatus basically all in the same go.

It might be overwhelming at times, having so much open at once, but if you pace yourself, I think you'll be fine.

My general rule of thumb is I don't buy something unless I am 100% sold on it, chances are if you're not all the way interested in this one, there might be a cape available later you like even more You can also ask players to pair it with your cosmetics to see if you like how it looks in #outfit-requests
