also, using screenshots as references help a lot, it allows you to see how certain cosmetics are shaded (in terms of do they use a slightly different colour for shading to add a different tinted hue subtly or do they use a similar hue to keep a consistent colour) and how they are modeled

Yeah sure! Hope you don’t mind me being a bit harsh
Id say that there are mainly three big mistakes here, firstly, there’s the lineart, which is messy and unstable, in a way that makes it look like it doesn’t hold itself well.
Secondly there’s the base colors, these colours aren’t bad by themselves, however, it takes a lot of practice to properly use high contrasting colours together, so instead of using highly saturated ones, it would be better to make them less saturated.
Lastly, although using black to shade colours can be used to convey a specific mood or style (such as western comics, which have black shadows), it can easily make the drawing look messy and show a lack of understanding on art, usually it is recommended that you use colours which complement the base ones, by changing the saturation and hue of the base colour you can get very nice tones easily!
Of course, another trick would be to use a light tone and experiment with layer modes, multiply, add, colour dodge, all of these can be easy tricks to get cohesive palettes which can be very useful for a person who just started drawing

This response is for the benefit of all artists, but addresses some of the things Lemon said:
I'm going to say what you said you don't want to hear: reactions DO NOT equal quality. If anyone finds themselves in the mindset of posting and then waiting for reacts, then the healthiest thing to do is step away from social media.

I have significant experience in the field of visual art and its intersection with social media on a professional level, and what I have learned is that people who chase the dragon like that, always hoping for the little serotonin kick that reactions give them, end up allowing other people's tastes to shape their artwork. Not only that, but social media engagement increases strongly in relation to the most base emotional appeals. Better, more nuance artwork that takes more time to appreciate and more thought to digest tends to do less well in social media.

The comparison of one thing to another that's right next to it is unfair to yourself. The number of people in chat at any given moment fluctuates, so there may just be times when a given piece doesn't get a lot of attention, or other times when people have been distracted by something else. There are SO many factors in a space like this that work against getting an honest reaction. It's ok to admire or even feel jealous of another person's skills; that's something you can take to heart and work on improving your own skills. But comparing to another artist's audience, reactions, money, awards, etc., etc. is a bottomless pit of despair for all artists at all levels.

On the topic of whose reactions you should value: an artist's toughest critic should always be themselves. Make artwork to improve your skills, to tell stories that you like, to expand your own horizons, and allow yourself to feel proud of achievements you make compared to your own work before.

Again, the replies are really eye-opening. I need to learn to accept these truths, as cruel as they may seem, because it is ultimately the nature of this server and social media. I need to digest this properly, and learn to distance myself from likes as hard as it may be.

I don’t think I could pull myself away from social media, specifically discord since I rarely use Twitter anymore. A lot of people I know on discord I only know on here and they are my lifelines. Is there any advice for alternatives for breaking myself from this cycle? Because it is really destroying me, and I treasure my mental health more than most things

i know it may seem like a little thing, but i distanced myself by posting something and not touching it for sometimes several days. the most extreme case was when i had to log out and uninstall something because i got too anxious. (this was years ago, i'm much better about this now)

otherwise, i can't help too much because i don't have the most conventional ways of dealing with things, but generally speaking, it's always good to start small. if you can't post something and then mute/ignore, try logging out. if you can't log out without logging back in, delete the app. basically, just make it more of a task to check in on something so you're not so focused on it.

again, it's an unconventional way of starting to distance yourself, so if anyone else has better tips, please feel free

In fan communities, the reactions are always guided by people's relationships not with the art, but with the subject. thank you for putting that into words/bringing that up. i have small brain and forget things often

a big reason that i got better about social media attention was distancing myself from fandom content. it got way less interaction, but i felt considerably better about what i was drawing instead of feeling this pressure of, "i hope they like my take on this fandom content!"
it completely 180'd my way of interacting with social media because there are people out there that really are just focused on your progression, and not all of the content you can potentially produce

There have been some discussions here about the skin color of Sky kids. Before a long-winded lecture, I want to say as clearly as possible: Sky kids in your art can be any color you choose. They don't have to reflect the game's colors faithfully because our Sky kids are ourselves!

Some of the discussions have been searching and inquisitive, some have bordered on accusatory and difficult. It's not a new thing, and it's not just one or even a small number of people who have put some thought into how these relationships in art apply to our real world and the real conflicts that surround the subject of our ethnic and geographic origins. No matter how those questions are asked or answered, there's no harm in wanting to take the subject on in a mature and respectful way.

One of the questions is cultural appropriation. This has a long and difficult history and is absolutely worth it for artists to study. One question is about art styles that are popular and carry an outsized influence, especially on younger artists. Young artists will need to find their way through growth, but will not benefit much from being told what not to like. One question is about whether Sky kids should be represented only literally as they are in the game. The list of questions on this topic is much longer than what I can write in 4000 characters, but the answer to all of them is the same: Sky has the strength of all its players, and in Sky fanart it will always be natural for people to express aspects of themselves creatively.

Fanart that brings individuality and a unique perspective from the artist will always be uniquely enriching for the community

Tracing isnt inherently bad imo, another form of practicing art and getting references
as long as you don't trace someone else's art and claim it as yours, it's all good

I have done landscapes and everything by myself, and it’s why I knew what kind of angle I wanted from the picture when I took it. The stuff I didn’t do was do all the work involved in structuring everything 😅 I’m not gonna claim it as 100% mine though, don’t worry.

TGC did most of the work in building proportions and angles, etc. i changed the scarf cus I felt like it but yeah.

I also think you shouldn't post any traced art. But you can use it occasionally to practice with specific shapes and movements. But over using tracing and calling it your own work is the issue.

Especially if you take the picture that you trace yourself then its 100% Okay. I do photography irl so i take pictures of random things nad trace them. Then trace again into my style and go from there. I dont do it these days as ive seen no need. I specify when i do though

Since a Cello would be a bit too heavy looking, I made this design where the Cello is in pieces and when you take it out, the pieces form into the instrument and the strings are magical, and it will revert back to its broken form when you take it back in
