you need a base idea for what your skid will be about

it can be something like an occupation, a job, a hobby (tamer, warrior, sheppard, etc... anything really)
it can be the portrayal of something, if you want your skid to be based off of plant, an animal, etc...
it can be related to character trait, try developping a personality to your skid before starting a design

there is plenty ways to tickle your creativity before starting the designing part of the OC creation
