I have a theory.

Would the prophecy trails force skykids to be more human?
As in they cannot fly, or rely on winged light to take damage, and overcome challenges without flying or losing their light.

Even if the water trail did exist before skykids were able to dive (season of Abyss), the water during the first trail can take our light. It is not dark water, and yet it takes our light instantly.

The earth trial is a labyrinth, not a maze. While there are dead ends, there is one correct path to the centre and any dead ends are minor setbacks.
A skykid would have been able to fly over the walls, but the trails forces skykids to climb over obstacles.

The air trail is the most infuriating, in my opinion. as this trail lets skykids fly iver large gaps, but have little to no control of their flight. On the one hand it could be partly an in game issue with how the wind can cause skykids to overshoot or miss their landings. Though the trail does teach skykids to remain determined enough to keep trying.

The fire trail feels like it hits home.
The darkness that a skykid must delve into is a theme they also fsce in Eden. With their light as fragile as ever, they must find their way in this dsrkened maze. Especially with the third area has ways to loop on itself, causes skykids to keep moving or be taken out by the shadows, and light a way for others to safely make it to the end.

I wonder if the ancestors had a similar experience with the trails, wether these trails are powered by darkstone and what haopened to the students.
I am sure they have perished according to the murals, although we do not see any remains in the trails. Not even a statue.

late wasp
#

Trials were not designed for Sky Kids, that's why.
Ash confirms the dead Ancestors in the clouds are people who tried the Trial and failed (died).

compact shale

Wait when did Ash confirm that those ancestors specifically DIED?

nimble ingot
compact shale
#

So the prophecy mural even predicted the amount of students. Nice.

edit: why is this the epiphany I come to

nimble ingot
#

yes, 8 students in total, where it looks like none of them made it.

Unless there is a way to track them down, us skykids may never know who these spirits were and what they did.
While each spirit we have saved had an emote, stance or call. I do wonder if we would run into spirits that would instead offer something else in the future.

That is interesting.

Were those murals the only ones to depict ancestors lying down like that (as in deceased)?
The murals at the start of Dawn shows spirits kneeling and looking down, which is similar to how the spirit statues look.

While skykids in the game are simply taken to the last checkpoint when they fail. Would it be canon to the lore that skykids are meant to succeed at the trail on their first try?

late wasp
rigid mural
#

Personally pretty eh at the notion of associating gender with a job instead of identity. Feels a bit diminishing.

late wasp
#

that's true, should have worded it a little better. it's more of an "aesthetic", because iirc we see those "genders" performing tasks outside their scope iirc. Like Civillian warriors (Scout for example) or Intellectual/Civillian warriors (Soldier).

Not to mention the whole Seasonal spirits.

rigid mural
#

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

late wasp
#

Courageous Soldier does not conform to the Warrior aesthetic (gender). Meaning, while they are a Soldier, their gender is not a Warrior-gender. But rather, a Civillian-gender.

Labor, Warrior, Intellectual, Civillian, etc are just approximation words, because there isn't words in human speech for those different genders. So we picked the closest thing to it.

Similar to how Europeans used to call "Samurai" as "Knights", until eventually people just started using the Japanese word, because the approximation-translation wasn't cutting it.

rigid mural
#

So you mean that gender = base model type (SkyDeepBow and SkyNoThanks got the same base model for example) and their job is their title (SkyFaint and the Courageous Soldier you showed are both seemingly in the military) ?

late wasp

Basically, yeah, like if we replace "Labor, Warrior, etc" for A, B, C, D, E; then we could say "So and so are B-gender".

I'd say so yes. For one their altars have the same appearance as the graves of other spirits.

Further "spirit" is just another word for "ghost", and this is how it is used, as in, the acestors are dead. (as explained by the devs here)

And finally, some ancestors have been referred to as "spirits" by devs here in the Discord.

Confirming they are dead like everyone else.

this conversation went into politics, which is a place we aren't going in this server, so I'm going to clean up some of this talk. Please help us keep IRL politics out of this server. As for gender, I think it's best if we leave debate on the topic. Players can decide for themselves, and we don't have to agree. Imagining a "gender economy" sounds to me like it has tones of transphobia. Gender identity isn't a choice any one of us ever made, and living with an identity that doesn't conform to gender norms can be extremely painful and difficult.

frigid tinsel
#

I’m not one to argue with mods, however I think there’s a misunderstanding here. A lot of us here are trans or queer in some way. It’s common in genderqueer circles to make absurdist jokes about gender, especially since gender is a social construct, which the ā€œgender economyā€ bit falls into. We know that being forced to abide by gender roles we don’t align into hurts.

late wasp
#

100% what alasdair said. but if there was a misunderstanding, I can agree with the removal of certain messages, if there is this possibility of misunderstanding. last thing we'd want is to scare a potential new member due to misunderstandings.

livid crypt
#

As for lore: I personally dislike the idea of associating vocation with identity. Vocation or one's role in society is a choice anyone should be able to make (and I don't imagine a caste system in Sky), so mixing that with identity feels harmful.

@frigid tinsel I agree with all of what you say and in a public chat where we can't know the full experience and intent of everyone involved, sometimes it's up to moderators to set clear boundaries. To me "gender economy" feels like an absurdist idea that could easily fall into arguments or abusive comments.

frigid tinsel
#

Granted I just got to the bottom of 200 messages and so if there were messages I didn’t see in time before they were deleted then I can’t speak for those.

livid crypt
#

that's exactly the issue: people pop in and out of conversations, and when context is missing for some, it may get really difficult to understand whether an absurdist turn in logic lead chat to a fun place, or whether people are imaging ways to control or limit expressions of gender identity

wise rampart
#

I’m going to do the opposite and backread. I’d rather have context so I can understand the full scope.

rustic heron
#

This is admittedly a fair, if uncomfortable, point. It only takes one bad actor to disrupt a group dynamic, and providing avenues for those bad actors to do so makes it easier for them and harder for us.

It really does require proactive thought and action to create a safe space for expression, and some of the decisions will not jive well with more lighthearted targets, but it’s overall a small price to pay for that safety.

We’ll find something else to joke about. We always do pCoolKid

There used to be plans for a part of the wasteland to have an area near the foot of the mountain, with a carving of the megabird going up the side of it, throigh the clouds.

That and the creature that I like to call the eel (credit to Vela for the auggestion), that we see in the abyss area (the long one that leaves behind a trail of bubbles). It used to be in Light Awaits and was as big (if not bigger) than the whale.

There used to be Journey travelers early on in the game, though was removed not long thereafter.

the megabird is a giant mass of Light, each drop off Light inside the mass is intelligent and together the Light sings and swims together in a timeless chorus

light creatures are the lifeblood of the megabird, cycling in and out of the Light to journey across the world and bring light and life to the realms with their presence, they have an energy inside them to be exploited, they sometimes shed this energy

butterflies are the easiest form of exploitable light energy so they are often captured and transported in jars

darkstone is a special resource that seems to suck up light and then emulate some kind of power, making it useful for all sorts of machines. The prince (possibly) discovered it and the kingdom started mining it so they could use it for all sorts of devices. Darkstone, when refined, creates power diamonds. "Crabs are often found near the golden containers, which in turn are often found near power diamonds."

It redirects and chemically changes Light, which in turn can corrupt the Light (somehow)

there was a giant power diamond created or harvested for some grand plan made by the prince and maybe the elders. It might have been a giant power source, a weapon, ect. I have recently been led to believe it creates a shaft of Light elevating Beings straight into Orbit, and that the prince was just trying to bring everyone home, which is what i believe the prophecy is about

there was a war, and all we can recognize about differences in the kingdom is there is a theme of tradition vs technology

tbh I don’t really feel necessarily slighted in regards to lore or lack there of. i feel like sky’s primary story is cohesive and easy to pick up as you play through it till Eden. there’s just not a lot of specific actors and most of it is inference taken from the environment. that’s the basic story at the core of it all. and obviously then you’re left with this really fascinating world of spirits and ancestors and elders, and via the seasons mechanic we’re slowly piecing together not like the Big Story Lore as to how everything became the way it has - which I also want to know more about of course and I understand those who are frustrated with a lack of it or feel strung along - but it’s about individual pockets of Ancestor society that slowly broaden our idea of how life was like in the past. like, we may not have any big Lore (King/Prince, Elder, Storm, War etc.) capital L drops in Abyss but we’re still getting lore: like the confirmation of existing undersea darkstone/power diamonds mining, the fact that krill either cohabitat in the sea or originate from it, the possible confirmation that not all spirits were wiped out in one giant blast and there were small groups struggling to survive after the fact, the undersea facilities whose purposes will probably be revealed in the quests coming up, a few new creatures we now know to exist in the world (Mosiac Eel, Big Worm Mural Fella)

i guess it’s just to say there’s a difference between ā€œwider story loreā€ and ā€œbackground environmental loreā€ and believe me when i say i’d love more of the former, but I personally still enjoy how much of the latter we’re still getting with each season. i think it fits in line with most of what the Skykids overall goal is: to restore the kingdom and help ascend Spirits, which we are doing with each season.

# hushed steeple Had the journey traveler, remember the mega mountain, Do you have a picture of...

Here is everything I have about the eel (nickname, not its canon name. And not yet confirmed to be related to the eel spirit in the daylight prairie caves)

The creature is seen in concept art to be very large, have a long body with at least 3 or 4 pairs of fins on its sides. While the many fins may be similar to the cosmic elder manta, the creature does not have a face, nor a fanned tail. Which may mean the eel could be related to the elder cosmic manta, or coincidently share the long body, many fins details.

The only in game images I can find with this creature is in the early version of Dawn. I struggle to get a clear screenshot of it from videos, therefore I have linked a YouTube video for you to see a glimpse of it flying through the clouds. It may have been there to foreshadow its later appearance in Eden during Light Awaits. Although it is only a theory based on the concept art and the fact that Eden was incomplete near the end of Light Awaits (before the global release).

While the server here prohibits hacked content, I would like to give a comment on a video I have seen, but has since been deleted.
It was an early version of the Abyss area, that was not meant to be posted online.
While most of the assets were unpolished, which is to be expected that early in the season area's development, the video did also show the same eel creature in what looks like it ginormous size.

tulip aspen

it's not environmental as moreso as it's now just been stripped down to it's themes @late wasp

we have to keep in mind, the themes were intended to CREATE the story, but as TGC got closer and closer to launch, they ended up having to strip the game down until it was nothing but themes yet again

it's beautiful, but i dont applaud them for that because it only looks like this due to being unable to accomplish a bigger agenda
(which isn't necessarily their fault, they wanted that, we wanted that, they just weren't able to physically accomplish that with such a small studio. their dreams were too big, and they left them behind...)

rustic heron
#

You know, I’ve been thinking about the mind space theory again, and I think it’s more than just visiting a mental space.

Throughout the game, we experience an imprint of memories of Ancestors, while their bodies are elsewhere. Memories seem to have a presence throughout the world.

It would make sense, then, that meditation would be a way to focus and connect with the memories with lasting imprints in the world.

This matches really well with Vault: we know the tower exists, but the tower itself uses memories to manifest actual things, using a memory imprint to 3D print the reality of each floor.

The only caveat to this are the trials.

tulip aspen
#

yea lapis, that's kinda what i go for with the deeper explanation of what the mindspace is; it's a connection to the Light that both the living and dead make

thats why the visuals exist the way they do; it's based off of collective thoughts

rustic heron
# late wasp Makes sense of the "Ghost Whisperer"? forgot their name. but basically we would ...

No, those are real. Reality is still reality, but the memory plays over it.

@tulip aspen , I think my idea is different in that there is no unified, colllective ā€œmndspaceā€. Like Mindspace theory, all beings are connected to the Megabird, or have light within them.

The world too is full of light. Strong memories, from anyone, can cause an imprint in the world. The pieces we see are the most impactful memories of anyone. It can be as simple as living butterflies, or as tragic as losing your friends one-by-one.

Those memories shape the light in the world, leaving an imprint that persists.

We don’t enter a mindspace. We just home in on a specific imprint on the world.

Potentially, every living being has left these imprints, but we focus on some of the more interesting ones.

#

I didn’t elaborate, but because the world is full of light, all beings can shape that light via a strong emotional connection to the area by using their own light.

There are bones on that floor like there are big creature bones in the Wasteland. While we don’t know what those creatures were, there’s a correlation between the skeletons in the fourth floor of the Vault and the appearance of cosmic mantas, so we can presume those are manta bones on the fourth floor. Thus the larger skeleton in the fifth floor may be how that creature manifests in the Vault that correlates to its once living appearance. Though we still don’t know what it was when alive.

As for why it appears to emerge from the Prairie constellation, it could be nothing, just coincidence. Or it could have something to do with the fact that we see light creatures — as butterflies — emerging from pots and the large cosmic creature is just a nod to that.

# tulip aspen so you're kinda just taking on a hallucination/vision type vibe

It’s not a hallucination. Sky is an inherently spiritual world. The world is like a giant memory cube, and we can see the memories because we are filled with light.

It’s as much a hallucination as a document file in a computer is. You can see and interact with it, but you can’t touch it. In fact, it’s just electricity that powers lights in a specific fashion.

I think the key difference is the word hallucination, like I mentioned before. Spirits exist in Sky. They are very real, but have no tangible form. All beings in Sky are both Spirit and Physical.

When Ancestors die, they are just shedding their physical body. They are then purely light beings.

Maybe it’s easier to@say that there are 6 perceptual senses at work here. The first 5 are sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. The 6th is the mind.

Spirits are only perceivable with this 6th sense.

tulip aspen
#

yes, when beings of light shed their shells (they dont have fingernails) they become pure beings of Light; that's true

seeing something with only your mind is kinda the definition of a hallucination however, no matter how psychological or meditational we make this

is it being a hallucination a taboo perhaps? it just sounds bad? cos i could get that tbh

When looking at the concept art, there does seem to have been plans for it to appear in some from. Again, possibly as foreshadowing to the Eden fight with the king and a corrupted creature.

All that remains of that connection, that I can tell, are the skeletal remains of a creature with a long body and a skull (there are some theories to suggest that is a whurtle, a whale and turtle hybrid).
The elder cosmic manta on the 5th floor of vault may have had a 'day' variant, similar to the mantas and the cosmic mantas.
It is possible the elder manta in the sanctuary island may be related, however the tail, larger pair of fins on the from and a thicker body may suggest otherwise.

Speaking of mantas, has anyone noticed the cosmic manta in the starry desert looking a bit different?

I sometimes see it develop a milky, whitish patch on its body. Especially if a skykid has touched it.
I wonder if mantas would turn into cosmic mantas when they reach vault for some reason. Would it be a caused by the storm? Would it be part of Vault's technology of using projections? Are cosmic mantas the result of draining the light from them and they would be taken to vault for safe keeping?

I should take pictures to compare.

tulip aspen
rustic heron
#

Damn. It turns out I supportted Mindspace theory the entire time.

tulip aspen
#

in a way, your take of spirits still coincides perfectly with the Mindspace's take of spirits

the difference just lies in that the mindspace argues the trials, elder scenes, and last floors of vault have to be completely within a dream, which you understandably dont seem to support

but i have theorized that floor 3 and 4 and perhaps 5 (the trees, bones, mantas and even platforms maybe) are still just physical illusions we can see and touch via our connection to the light

i used to call them hallucinations- is there a better word for it then sixth sense, if i shouldnt apply the word hallucinations?

With how much of an emphasis the game has on meditation I believe that things like Trials and most of Vault take place on like, intersecting ā€œplanesā€ of reality that can be accessed via meditation. Like how we specifically start each trial by going and sitting in front of an altar inside a meditation circle.

But. So does moving boats. Is boats very slow menial moving also a spiritual realm?

That’s the other point of contention. I don’t like the notion of parallel realities. I much prefer the notion that you’re just experiencing the memory of another sky kid’s space. The glowing stone controlling the shared space is just a 3D recorder of the environment, and when you enter the shared space, much like Vault, the space is recreated for others to enjoy.

But you can only experience one memory at a time .

ah yes. it's extremely important that we acknowledge each other's biases because a huge thing that goes into the politics of Canon chasing is that what we support and what evidence we find logical or appealing is strongly due to our personal preferences

that is why I have to acknowledge every side of every bias in every one of the docs that are more controversial, such as the mind space illusion one and the one about which species the krill might have came from

It is a shame they do disappear.
It would be nice to have see them fly above the area.

As for the manta in the starry desert. It does seem to have a transparent look like any other manta in Vault.
However, when a skykid rides it, a white translucent patch appears on the body.

The problem is I am having trouble getting a good shot of this. I am on android and any time I try to ride a manta, some glitches happen 9/10.
Either I get thrown off, or start violently shaking while trying to stay on, or the camera jolts to behind the manta and the the former or the latter happens.

I do hope TGC fixes that.
That and consider including a setting to disable the camera being forced to pan in different directions. It may be fun to see this and that in the realms, it become more and more of a nuisance. After playing nearly 2 years, I do not want to see the same things every time I fly past them.
I know it is part of the cinematics of the game, but not when the player know about it does not want to see it for the umpteenth time.
The same can be said about the hints. Same reason apply, after a while, there is no need to remind a player on to play the game, unless they are suffering from memory loss.

Abyss Crew are described as survivors that formed a crew and set out for adventure, meaning we are talking post-Storm. And the resources they are looking for is also described as searching for treasure.

This alone implies there is an economy, otherwise collecting treasure would mean nothing. And also that power crystals are the currency of post-Storm economy.

TGC also describes the Abyss Crew as what the GW culture would look like. HOWEVER we have to take into consideration we are talking about post-Storm. So it's my belief that TGC meant the post-Storm GW culture: people going through ruins and collecting power crystals to become rich in the post-Storm economy.

Super late to this and I apologize very much but I don’t think mindspaces are really parallel realities either? or at least that’s not the right word for them. It’s like someone’s imagination just filling the space and creating illusions if that makes sense. If you dive fully into it like elder cutscenes it’s more similar to reading their mind than entering a parallel reality

I imagine it like a visual representation of what their thoughts, experiences, emotions, etc look like. I am aware that this probably makes little to no sense but it’s a very abstract concept in general so I’m not sure how to explain it better. I’ve seen the concept of different minds looking like different landscapes when you try to enter them in several pieces of media involving mind reading though so you might already know what I’m talking about

summary
"A mass of Light sits in space, a collective conscious

Ancestors (spirits) came from the Light, either sent or fell by accident, as pure Light energy, then gaining shells upon landing.

These ancestors began building a kingdom, but due to the religious subtexts of worship and meditation, it's theorized that they were supposed to reconnect mentally to that Light in space, in order to ascend back up to it. (that theory may be incorrect and they might've had no real way to return)

Powerful deities; Elders, were sent by the Light to help them ascend, tasked to help the ancestors grow both spiritually and keep their kingdom thriving, but even then the ancestors still couldnt ascend..

The prophets had a vision and saw a being defeating a group of trials, and being given great power to lead them all to salvation.
Ancestors tried the trials but failed, until a special child ancestor that fell from the sky a long time later, defeated them and was crowned prince/king.
The prince MAY have singlehandedly discovered/developed darkstone and crystal technology, but that might've been before the prince.

There seemed to be resentment in the kingdom with one side preferring spiritual traditions, and the other preferring technology.
Civil war breaks out.

The giant diamond in eden was created/harvested for an unknown purpose, but recently i've been led to believe it was intended to send all ancestors straight back up into space without a complicated ascension process.
(Made before or during the war???)

The crystals created some sort of corruption pollution, and the giant diamond ruptured.
We dont know much about the apocalypse that followed, and there's even theories that there were multiple apocalypses all at once.
After the dust settled, likely decades later, all of the ancestors were dead.

A loooong time after that, the mass of Light sent angels to retrieve the souls of the ancestors, and that's us! Our job isnt done until every spirit hidden in new areas is found."

Well, you’re not alone… all of us desperately want to know the same things SkyLOL

Jam has a really neat theory about the winged lights that he can explain to you. The krill and crabs are both light creatures that have been corrupted by the storm and are desperately trying to steal your light in an impossible hope of returning to their former selves; what krill originally looked like is up for debate, but it’s commonly accepted that crabs didn’t change much from their original forms.

The elders were killed in the storm similar to ancestors, but beyond that we don’t know too much about how they work. They seem to have a greater connection to the world than ancestors do and are grateful for the light we give them, implying they need it in some capacity. Wish I had more information on this topic for you, but it’s not something I’ve focused on before; going to think about it for a bit

# reef widget Thanks but to be honest it's not just about the *storm* I want to know everythin...

I’ve described winged light as such based on the dev quote that winged light are ā€œimprints of the children of lightā€:

i've been favoring the idea that winged light are the imprints of skykids, specifically a mark where many of them have been, hence why they appear in the same places (tho that may be gameplay mechanic, but I like to think in-universe they also appear elsewhere less often) like a well-treaded path in the woods made by many footprints walking the same way

As for krill, they’re corrupted light creatures. We don’t know what they were originally. Darkness corruption, whether directly or indirectly caused by the ancestors, strips a light creature of its light and makes it hungry for more light. There’s a hint at the start menu that describes krill as ā€œhungry for your lightā€ hence being so murderous

so Megabird is the supposed god of the Sky world. you see them after the end credits while descending Eden. I can't send that pic but I can send Kamilico's compilation of Megabird symbolism in-game and in Tom Zhao's concept art.

Megabird is kinda a big deal but we don't know much about Them. They are at least made of stars, possibly a hivemind (more on that later). they sent down skykids on their mission to save the Sky world from the ancestors' screw up and rescue all the spirits so that they can ascend. they presumably made all light creatures, the ancestors, and the Elders.

the megabird is the entity in Orbit, a giant mass of Light energy that all Light Beings come from and belong to
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QeIMzNaPz-TzC8ZHrdUYTOZ99zObm1PYx65sejTyIfc/edit?usp=drivesdk

it's called megabird by lore vets because the entity is named that in concept arts, and people love personifying the megabird as some sort of god

The One/Megabird still exists and is wholly relevant, via the Light that we see in Orbit

all Beings of Light in the world came from the Light, they belong to it, and they will always inevitably return

however, i don't think The One intends to "gain intelligence and experiences" through the beings that descend down into the world

for me it seems like the lifeblood of the light that flows in and out of the corners of the universe are the light creatures, however, ancestors, were the anomaly, which i why i believe they are an accident at this point in the game's story
either an accident, or a mistake that the Light let happen, and couldn't stop

skykids are just the rescuers, the ones who clean up that mistake

I didn't mean it in a negative way, moreso categorically. in Christian mythos, the antichrist would be a Christ-like figure who would destroy the world by bringing world peace. kinda what the king did – brought the Sky kingdom to a golden age with the development of darkstone tech and power diamonds, ultimately making Eden go boom and creature the worldwide storm

late wasp
#

||more like Protestant mythos, but yeah||
thought you would mention the Cave of Prophecies, how only "2" figures complete it: the King and "us".

While the King does not self-sacrifice (Christ), we do, effectively becoming a Christ-figure, while the king is an anti-Christ figure.

kinda grim

truly like a puppet

okay people, we've got two religions to choose from in Sky

fruity, which one would you want to believe?
which one would be the better of two kinda somber realities

returning to the perfect and controlled dance of Light forever and never deviating from that again after you and the others made your mistake

being a puppet for some distant god who will use you as some sort of inlet, having your knowledge and life experiences be taken from you to be viewed like tv shows, when you die

they both suck ngl"

found it: #lore-discussion-spoilers message
basically: "you die, ascend, and become one with god""

#

.
and the addendum to me thinking that the sky being "too perfect" to live in

"well im wording it awfully

when you think about it, it's purely subjective yet likely subjectively ill just because "forever" just sounds so.... caged

it sounds like the loss of morals, of importance, of meaning

everything could be contained within forever, but nothing could fill it

so to talk about a dance of energy and mass that remains the same, forever, seems awful, to us as finite beings, because it'd supposedly, eventually, feel so empty

but it's something only someone who learns to be a part of that forever, could understand

someone who has already transcended death
someone who is tired, and wants to rest, and be in the arms of the Others

that's why i think, from our human perspective, my take on the Light is so grueling, but from the perspective of beings who went through war and pain and suffering and complex emotion when they were supposed to be drops of Light in an endless sea, i think

i think they'd want to rest"

"Blue and Orange Morality is a general term for a type of morality/moral system that is so alien to humans that we can't peg the user of that morality as "good" or "evil"."

rustic heron
#

I feel like this explanation ignores the concept of rebirth that's inherent to both Sky and Journey.

frigid tinsel
#

that's why i later speculated that Megabird may be a collectivist hivemind rather than a conformist hivemind. you don't inherently or even have to lose your individuality within Megabird, Megabird is the penultimate sum of all beings who were once separate and now join a part of it.

rustic heron
#

I like to think that the Megabird is the entirety of the universe. It has a poetic tone in that "we are all but stardust", which rings as literal for Ancestors.

#

And as a consciousness, it is so multitudinous and incomprehensible as to not be any kind of force, active or passive, in the grand scheme of things.

#

I forgot how "busy" the Elders OOB is. I've got three of those fancy no-mask players blocking my screenshots.

tulip aspen
# rustic heron I feel like this explanation ignores the concept of rebirth that's inherent to b...

how so?

as I've said before to others who have said the same thing, the concept of rebirth applies as a flat-one-and-done theme used only for skids and the Journey of the Moth

i really dont believe ancestors were meant by the Light to stay in the kingdom, and that they fell on accident, or rebelled once

we only rebirth as a way to grow stronger and pursue further and further into the storm

light creatures 'rebirth' but they are more reminiscent of a natural cycle while the skid's cycle represents fee significant journeys

late wasp
#

deviating from Megabird is the ideology of the cancer cell that deviates from the will of the Body.

tulip aspen
rustic heron
#

REALLY. Is kissing censored?

tulip aspen
#

well yes, of course it's a western take

im trying to empathize with how Sky was written, im not looking at it from a general perspective of philosophy, just what exactly was the likely stereotypes and themes that the devs INTENDED to shape Sky with

and they are western writers.. in the west SkyLOL

stereotypically, thematically:
creatures of Light flow like water out of the Light and across the realms only to evaporate back up to it then rain down again across the galaxy

ancestors are abnormalities, not being creatures of light, but special humanoid beings of light, likely not intended to even exist, they probably don't and didnt 'rebirth'

skykids did it as a thematic narrative as a moth, which was beautiful and powerful, and they continue to do it afterwards for general strength and closer connection to the Elders

.
im sad to hear it's western that it works that way, but it does, so we have to approach it western, lapis

so in the end, im afraid you'll have to accept that the way Sky uses the word 'rebirth' is an absolute butchering of the term, and was used prolly just cos it sounds cool...

late wasp

i could use Tom Zhao's concept art as visual aid here, but it would be too much work. But basically it does make a point to show that Ancestors are not creatures of light.

This made me thing that mayhaps Ancestors are just Dark Creatures, not part of the Megabird Life Rain Cycle. They were never meant to ascend. But they did force their way into Orbit, bringing their higher intellect with them, effectively tainting the Megabird with their thoughts/emotions.

From this tainting, the Sky Kids are born, beings that are a mixture of the Creatures of Light and the Ancestors.

#

Ancestors:

tulip aspen
#

i will admit, there is ONE tom zhao concept that argues against what i just said; it does say both ancestors and creatures died and were reborn as a natural everlasting cycle

however, im fairly sure this image and text is one of the few parts of the timeline that are mostly irrelevant now

creatures have changed a LOT since then

edem boats have the symbol for darkstone instead of actual darkstone??

compact shale

Sky pictorial for "Allan please add darkstone slots"

tulip aspen

hmm
the reason i am so confident they are still beings of Light but not creatures is because they say they need to return home, not just get to the megabird in general

they state that it already was their home, and that they came from it, and must go back

that's why i dont think they were creatures in the world that just existed

tulip aspen

So instead of having darkstone actually inset into the boats, they have the diamond symbol for it. You can see the same diamond symbol representing ā€œplace where darkstone is refinedā€ in forest temple, second area of wasteland, and treasure reef

nimble ingot
# rigid mural Also, star collector's boat is so swag, why couldn't the old abyss boat be like ...

Exactly!
I am sure the Abyss boat could have looked amazing!

For those who saw whatvit looked like in the beta, surely the older version was more impressive than the current Abyss boat.

To be frank, the current boat looked like a slap dash job to me. 'Just grab a boat, scale it up and add some decorations and call it a day'
Especially when comparing it to the oldee version. Sure the old on did not have the jars, bookshelves or the gun. But surely one could have spent more time on making the focal point of a whole season look better than a ship that was given to a spirit.
Even if the accountant's boat is wrecked, it looked more interesting than the abyss ship.

And while adding the gun and jars are cool, it is not a good enough excuse for the boat being downgraded like that.

# hushed steeple How do skids perceive time? Do they even have the concept of time? What about th...

Time is relative in Sky.
Every 2 hours, there is an event like the geyser in sanctuary island and Granny's meals that take place 30 mins after.
The skykids get to rest every day to collect wax effectively.
Eden's final area resets every 7 days.
And there are the seasons as well as days of events.

While most of these can be chalked up to game mechanics to encourage players to play the game more often (daily).
There are some lore implications that can support the fact of Sky having time. In addition to the possibility of it being caught in a time loop.

The realms represent a stage of life, as well as a time of day (with the exception to Hidden Forest and Eden).
Their old names were as follows: Dawn, Day, Rain, Sunset, Dusk, Night and Storm.
The realms even reflect on these times as the skykid progresses through them. As the skykid travels towards the temple, the day progress with them. When teh skykid backtracks, the days would also revert to their earlier times. You can see this effect in Dawn as you fly over the starting area and head towards the temple, as well as when you fly above the dream village towards the coliseum (Valley's temple).
While Hidden Forest and Eden are less obvious, there is still a shift in atmosphere as the skykid reaches certain points in the realm. This not only sets the mood in every point of interest, it may also imply a change taking place by the skykid progressing through the realms.

# lean siren ohhh thank you! I thought they were like batteries because i saw them in boats ...

Like I said, they are like batteries since they can hold light. There is one that can be seen in the forest temple, being used to power the golden mechanism.

But they are perhaps too bulky to be used in other things, like boats, switches, levitating platforms etc.

I believe they could be compared to ancient batteries in real life, such as the Baghdad batteries.
Baghdad batteries were ceramic pot with a copper and iron rod inside. An acidic liquid would be poured in the pot and would produce a small amount current.

According to the Mythbusters, Baghdad batteries are not very strong. There was an episode where they were experimented with Baghdad batteries in the Ark of the Covenant. They concluded to the batteries are not able to produce a noticeable shock.
In Sky however, it might be theoretically possible that the ancestors used light orbs or butterflies to fuel their batteries with light energy. But the jars were to weak and too big to generate the amount of power they needed. Hence why when they discovered Dark stone being able absorb light. They could have used the jars to charge the diamonds, and then use them in their inventions.

I wonder if the dark child is really a skykid, or just a child of darkness (no light or soul)
And the light kid could be child of light similar to the one in the ushering stargazer's memory, and perhaps a fragment or aspect of a skykid.

Either way, I find the scene interesting as the hug interaction is not forced. The dark side is offering the hug and the light half can accept it.
Hugging can symbolise acceptance, an embrace, forgiveness or even sincere love.

Once to two opposites come together (which I am sure @rustic heron might find it reminiscent of a moment Steven universe), a enlightened skykid appears.
That type of glowing is more intense than the spell effect. Perhaps for the reason the skykid is not just glowing, instead in that moment, they are made of light.
Lastly, our skykid only return to their original appearance when they reach Orbit.
Whether it suggests the body is formed/finallised in Orbit, or the light shifts and reveals the skykid's appearance is up for debate.

when I first played through the game and had no idea about any lore at all, my impression of the themes in this scene were forgiveness

the way we see somebody sitting down absent of light surrounded by darkness, wholly alone, and then we offer them a friend, to let them know it's okay, you're not alone here in the dark, I forgive you

and then that is what lights up your skykid in the end (in my mind)

I always thought "light" in this game was symbolic for love, hope, forgiveness, and friendship? So the fact that we're made of light always symbolized that we're made of hope and love, and sharing hope and love (since doing so is our purpose) brings us to a higher and more attuned sense of self

that was my take on it in my first playthrough, thought i'd share ^^

hi lore discussion, i have a random question
So im writing a story where there’s a few things to keep in mind before going into it; seasons are seperated into tribes, each with their own leaders, and the concept of murder is now spreading around, being able to be done with blunt force or darkness.
My question is I don’t know how to incorporate spirits or eden at all, do yall have any ideas?

nimble ingot
#

You can entertain the idea that the spirit world is not as separated as people once thought.
Assuming your story also accepts that a spirit does not move on and instead stays behind. Perhaps the souls of the depareted could stick around either because they are not done with what they wanted to do in life. Or they want justice for their deaths.

Thats a good idea, but that may not work because I have it so that whenever a skykid ā€œdies,ā€ their body breaks into pieces that can become darkness, or dark creatures, usually crabs. But then the existence of spirits wouldn’t quite make sense, so maybe I could make it so that if you don’t do something after a skykid dies they don’t become a spirit. I’ll think about it a little.

nimble ingot
# lone vector Thats a good idea, but that may not work because I have it so that whenever a sk...

Alright.
Perhaps this might help.

I am not sure if you consider ancestors and skykids to be the same.
If so, then you can say not all ancestors/skykids return as spirits. As some souls might not make it as a spirit and instead dies off. (which is sad)

If not, the a skykid that is aligned to the ancestors would adopt more of their qualities, which may include them gaining a soul. That in turn may suggest a skykid spirit is not only uncommon, but also implies that skykid spirit is aligned with the ancestors.
The same logic would fhen apply to skykids that align themselves with light creatures, dark creatures etc.

Hope this helps.

So, one of the discussions that me and Jam were having earlier concerned the notion of whether reincarnation occurs for all beings.

We see that some spirits can come and go from the world. These same spirits can gift you winged light, after which they disappear. We don’t really know where these spirits go, but we do know they show up in Orbit, which is indicative that they participate in the cycle.

What of the other spirits who don’t return? I like to think that some of them come back, but as light creatures. Light creatures are venerated in some parts of Sky (like in Prairie), so it may be that light creatures are reincarnations of Ancestors.

Which makes the abuse and manipulation of light creatures all the worse.

nimble ingot
#

I believe the world of Sky is caught in a time loop. Where the series of events can be relived in a cycle.

While on the one hand it is a game play feature for players to be able to relive past events, as well as explain why newer players can experience the same events older players have in the past. On the other, the concept of time in the realms are not consistent.
For example, The Sanctuary island is permanently set to midday, and yet the geyser goes off every two hours.

Perhaps the reason why some spirits return is because they do not wish to pass on for good. And those that do, perhaps do not have a reason to comeback.

hushed steeple
#

Yeah I think spirits rebirth. But the way they did it isn’t what they doing now. They are holding back on reincarnating to teach the new babies and make loads of candle cash

#

I keep forgetting where ā€œspirits Shepard lightā€ came from but if we all remember it, I can use it anyway. I think it means spirits fill with light (like how they change color when you red candle em) and then they take it to orbit when they die. They where supposed to do it naturally at the ends of their lives.....but the disaster made the end of their lives all happen at similar times :/

boreal nebula
rustic heron

Agreed.
Like I said, it is relative.
Relative to the skykid progressing through the realm. Essentially when the skykid is stationary, the day would not progress for them and time seems to have stood still. But the actuality is time is still ticking, it just does not look like it from an individual skykid's perspective

Hey guys! Could someone please tell me about the Eden King or Elder Alef?

frigid tinsel
#

the king or Eden Elder was the ruler of the Sky kingdom. the king might've been an ancestor who rose to power or, more likely, was Chosen One, the proto-skykid seen in Stargazer's memory who completed the trials. they might be the same as the prince Alef who had been crowned king and changed their name to Resh or the king and prince – Alef and Resh – were separate beings. do note that their names are not canon but fanon.

the king doesn't really show up in game, though in Tom Zhao's concept art, the king had an instrumental role in the game's story, being the one who discovered darkstone and approved of darkstone tech despite the problems it caused. they probably went mad with power or was a child who had several mental breakdowns a day due to the responsibility put on them. the king was supposed to be a corrupted boss the players would confront while climbing Eden. despite not being as present in the game as during concept development, their symbolism is present throughout the game:SeasonProphecy

I am one of the folks that brought up the time theory (I can look up who else also shared the idea if need be).

About the time repeated mega memory, I like that idea. Would it be the king's memory, or the megabird's memory? Could it be both, or even their legacy? So many questions!

The season seem to be the only noticeable indication of progress.
As new seasons come out, new spirits are revealed to be saved.
Whether it is the megabird, or even the work of the skykid and ancestors working together, these small changes will eventually build up to something.
What that something could be, only Time can tell.
