The game implies pretty heavily that sky children are vessels and not bodies of flesh and blood.

Before it was patched out, if you hit something really hard while in flight, you'd lose light. So, injury results in loss of light.

Then, you use your candle to burn away darkness, free spirits, and in each Elder cutscene you are sharing light with them.

If you lose all your wedges, you are left with a flame. Lose that flame, and you are left with a star/spark/ember. Lose that, and you lose a winged light.

If you're not convinced, consider Eden. The entirety of Eden alludes to your sky kid being a vessel which is filled with light and shares it with those who have none. Then at the end, an act of compassion actually fills your skykid with more light than they have ever held before, to the extent that it awakens those who have gone dark. (This channel says spoilers, so ping me if I should cover this....)

The full title of the game Sky: Children of Light also flat out makes the statement that your sky kid is not a physical creature, but a being of light.
