Something that I think is a huge giveaway for the fact that a war happened on wasteland is how the elder looks.

It might be called the Golden Wasteland because it used to be a great city, like the Golden Gate bridge, but since the darkness overcame it, the name changed to Golden Wasteland, keeping the golden part in memory of the destroyed place.

I agree, as we can see, it appears light is flowing to the Megabird, or possibly away from it. The fact there are clouds surrounding it at the end of the credits could show that its the light at the centre. The 'If only they had listened' could potentially mean that the elders also washed up, but decided to live in the realms, thus draining light away from the megabird. We go to orbit to return the light we had in order to maintain megabird. Possibly why the spirits lend us winged light once we ascend them, to help keep the world alive and preventing the death of the Megabird.

The ancestors probably live off their own source of light, in the diamond things. This means that they can't come back once it has been destroyed and start to die when broken. Possibly why the Forest Elder was impolite.

From this point they SHOULD either be happy together like that or merge back together but instead they grew more and more apart, slowly developing own personality traits different from each other, which could still be fine but then they started hurting each other, which technically would be considered self harm

They basically have a conflict with their own soul and stopped relating to it as if they were something different which is pretty unhealthy

this line couldve been said by the king himself!
he created these stone like things that will make it so that the "animals" wont go inside the holy land.
they started shipping the stones near the end of the holy land but something wrong happened and the entire supply of the stones went nuts, sucking up everysingle light in the holy land, city etc.
with such little amount of light. the darkness started creeping in and corrupting everything, with the power of the stones and the darkness. the king went nuts and became corrupted himself.

(the stones i meant was prolly the diamonds or stuff, i still dont know) (adding onto someone elses theory "maybe we are the prince")
not only cause of the friendship constellation, but also because of the vault ending and the "all is lost, nadir, atonement with the father.", all elders bow down to you. meaning that you are one of high authority.
that doesnt mean we are the prince exactly but we are somewhat connected to the prince.
with the help of a megabird, the prince sacrificed his exsistance to save his people. hence thats why u were born and is the reason why we dont know who the prince is. or we could just be the prince himself idk lmao, cause of prophecy, we are probably the next prince or something like that?

the forest was where the first war started, the war was between the darkness and the creatures/people of light.
e.g. krills, crabs, etc.

the forest won but there were still some crabs left.

the darkness lost in the forest and the remaining darkness ventured fourth to the wasteland, where the krills succeeded. but even tho they lost, the wasteland elder is still protecting the gate before vault. thats why krills are only in the wasteland as of right now. who knows, the darkness could break down the elders protection and go thru the gate. wait doesnt the valley go first before wasteland? tru, but valley couldve been safe because of how much light there is in valley. unlike forest and wasteland. thats why vault could someday be in threat of the darkness.)

i think. because wasteland was advancing so much, the king added statues of himself around the area proving his authority (like a theorist said- im just adding more)
it worked a bit but wasnt enough, so he covered wasteland in darkness, without his light as protection of the area. the darkness started attacking. or maybe something happened and the eden elder accidentaly removed most of the light in wasteland.
