Having just gone through the spirits looking at the masks, it looks like each area’s spirits display a connection to that area’s main function.
Isle: Boats
Prairie: Jars
Forest: Diamonds
Valley: a little ambiguous. The masks are horned, so possible alluding to combat with others, tying to the theme of seeing other adults as competition, or referring to the forked races.
Wasteland: military, with masks taking on the image of skeletons, krill, etc.

so I was wondering what happened to the fallen, they seem to be skykids like us, and my theory is that the shiny bois we find belonged to those empty vessels. but if that were the case, why do we ascend with them instead of being trapped like they were. well, with the new "come here" spirit cutscene, we learn that skykids started appearing when spirits were still alive, when it was first thought to be long after. so here's my thoughts, some time before eden overloaded, some skykids were sent to stop the disaster, however their efforts were futile and when the diamond blew up, the force of the explosion was so much, their souls were litterally yeeted out of them and scattered across the realms

Being honest I’m pretty sure we brought back all the fallen stars but the stars keep appearing. Does that mean more keep falling? Like why is there a cycle? Can you break that cycle?

There’s a strong link between our cycle and the cycle of rebirth in Buddhist and Hindu religion. We act out of mercy to heal the pain and wounds of those caught in Eden. Our acts could be construed as positive karma and when we’re reborn we’ve improved our new life. It’s cyclical. As for why, lore wise, they keep coming back, it’s open to interpretation. If the glowboys are truly prince, we haven’t been given the chance to save him. So. We can only keep attempting to heal him as much as we can.

It probably is game mechanics because now that I think about it some players call it the end of the game when you do Eden for the first time. So when you’re reborn the rest of it is game mechanics like increasing your flight power, getting cosmetics, and completing constellations, etc.

This leads me to believe that after Eden you completed your duty and the rest is just game mechanics and a repeat of what you did previously.

imo i disagree with it being game mechanics - the concepts put a HUGE emphasis on rebirth, it was a large part of the ecosystem and world. why would something so major be simply mechanics, why wouldnt rebirth be canon if its so major in the concepts and message of the game ?

Maybe those are the skykids who were near the Eden explosion like you talked about and how they separated from their vessel. But yeah that would then explain it was too late to save them because their vessel disappeared.
