aye sorry for the wall, but i remember someone used this instance of skids hunched over like this even in eden areas with little wind in their point that skid's can feel emotions (can't remember who brought this up), but seeing skids hunched over like this without any wind could mean that they are feeling pain, exhaustion, fear, etc. while it is true they may be emotionless initially and they have to learn various expressions from the spirits, ultimately they become more... "human" (or simply just being able to express emotion on their own) near their death

I think I may have written this before but I’m gonna add extra details

First off- The Golden Wastelands started off golden since the name suggests. So you know how wasteland looks like a factory? Well maybe it was a factory overseen by GW elder. Upon being created, poisonous liquids leaked out of the factory for no apparent reason.

So what I thought would have happened was that GW elder saw Prairie elder have mantas and butterflies.
GW elder wanted them too to change the wastelands a bit since it was a bit too golden so he created the factory.

Ok there are 2 options for what happens next
1)
some sort of problem happened when he was creating artificial mantas and butterflies- the polluted air and area turned the half created mantas and butterflies he made into krills and crabs which is why they are there.
2)
GW elder kidnapped a few mantas and butterflies from prairie and brought them over to wasteland, essentially bringing a bit of prairie itself into the wastelands(which may explain a bit of Ark in a sense) and then released them into the golden wastelands only to see the manta and butterflies transform into krills and crabs for the same reason as above.

What happened after-
GW elder was quite upset and Prarie elder found out what happened and punished him by sending him to stay in that little castle thingy at the end of wastelands.

From being locked up in that place for so long, the GW elder got weaker and weaker(like in the GW cutscene when he kind of slumps over) but the moth coming through wastelands helped the GW elder be restored to his former strength.
However, the after effects of his actions couldn’t be removed so the Golden wastelands would no longer be ‘golden’ ever again

(Just a warning, I don’t spend much time here so I don’t know much about what’s already been established)
What if the elders and how they interact with the sky kid represents a certain feeling or situation that is also represented by the level? (Not much of a theory but I found the idea interesting)
For example, the Forest elder is trying to put something together, but is lost. Stuck. And that’s what Forest is like sometimes - foggy, hard to find your way.
Then the sky kid comes and offers their light, which I like to think represents their friendship. Then the Forest elder finds how to complete the project, to not be lost anymore.
And wasteland elder could demonstrate hopelessness, when he falls. But then the sky kid gives him support with their light, and he gets back up again (if I remember correctly, hehe)
This is similar to Wasteland, where you can get struck down so many times - but if you have a friend, their support can raise you up again.
Not sure if this works for all the elders, but those were the two I thought about. Someone’s probably already said this before, but I wanted to share my thoughts cEllieSkyLove

I also thought about them fighting against the prince or king
Wasteland looks like the place where industrial waste is "stored", with huge pipes and waste products everywhere killing all life

I thought maybe they were fighting against someone who was producing all of that waste: but then the question was who is responsible for that waste? We don't know anything about another civilization, so maybe part of the sky civilization created that waste, or the king himself since he ruled over that place
Another question related to that is what kind of waste would that be and what for, so i kind of thought about the game Journey too and how the lighr was used for technological advance? Maybe after finding out how to use light and get power from it, the king or prince was greedy and wanted more and thats how the wasteland was created because of all of the waste
And then civil war happened bc sky people saw how dangerous it was getting idk

Perhaps sky kids were working for the spirits and elders from the very beginning thanks to their masks. And when the elders fell it could just be that the masks sky kids wear weren’t extinguished and hence it was drilled into sky kids to help the spirits and elders

ok, so, forest is meant to represent our teenage years. the original level in the concepts had you being literally turned off course by temptations that just led you to darkness and fog (likely meant to represent peer pressure, illicit stuff)
thus, in a symbolic sense, i think the rain, along with darkness as a whole, is meant to represent isolation, poor mental health, etc., basically the big « bads » of life
we see this theme in GW too, midlife crisis, so polluted and filled with stress and anger and isolation that it’s manifested into living beings that hunt you down
but to be specific, i think the theme of rain is meant to be representative of depression (especially since the skyshop poem references the rain as being forest elder’s tears), which is why it « drains our light ». depression drains you, it takes away your energy until you’re just an empty husk, and i think it translates well to poison rain that drains your light

the way i see it is a class divide
i know, yes, technically valley has class divide
but i think observing valley/wasteland can describe it better than just valley
to put it simply, wasteland is the proletariat (the working class), valley is the petty/bourgeoisie (business owners, independent entrepreneurs, etc)

valley is this lush paradise of hedonism and entertainment, but this luxury can only be upheld with the exploitation of the working class, the proletariat, in the rotten dump that is the wasteland, in factories and shipyards etc.,

and look at it geographically
wasteland is hidden. it’s below the clouds, when you look out over valley, you don’t know wasteland is there. it looks like a clear shot to the royal castle (eden). the suffering of the working class is hidden, just as it is in real life.

« people can’t be struggling, the economy is great, look at all this entertainment we have ! look at the gold ! how well-off everyone is ! »

but oh how things would change when you look below the clouds, behind the curtain, at how such beauty is only powered by the ugliest of exploitation
