I think that most if not all the spirits in the wasteland died to some sort of blight or even war. Through the Wasteland you can see ruins similar to other structures from the other lands, such as in the area where you find the first krill there is a structure that resembles the elder temple from the hidden forest. The question now arises: what was the blight that destroyed the wasteland area? The Krill? Something else? And why?
