There is a balance in the game, between light and dark. Like how the earth always is dark within the sun's shadow. The Elders are fallen stars, who have weakened and lost their light. Mantas seem to form from the Clouds, as the Krill do from the sludge. As part of the balance, there is always life and death. Krills kill Mantas. Mantas always come back. The spirits! They were in a war against the Krill. This happened in the Wasteland! Within this place, there is the vault. This vault is heavily guarded within the Wastelands by spirits to defend it from their enemy. Who? The Krill. Why? No idea. Another detail is that the Forest Elder creates weapons, she probably wanted the light back to make weapons for the people who guarded the Vault

Look back on it from mid-map, and you see at least half of it is scorched black.
The crashed boat in front has a burnt prow as well. I don't remember these details before.

At the very beginning of Isle: the giant hill where you walk up the steps and see your first wall paintings.
The top of that hill is scorched across the temple-facing side. And the boat with the first wl is part of that scorch line. You can get a really clear view of it halfway across the map on the jumping ramp.

They do seem to need sand to spawn if you notice that the crabs in forest are in a sandy cave even though the rest is grass outside
But then why don’t they exist in valley or isle? Maybe because they need water to survive which most of valley doesn’t have but there is an underground pond at ice rink (maybe bc its ice so can’t spawn??)
And while there is indeed water at the area after the cloud tunnel at temple in isle there is no sand so yeah.
