I realise now when watching the footage back, the "Hold Hands" icon above their head was the one for guiding them to spirits. At the time I believed it was for me to be led by them.
I also was not reading the pop-up, as I was panicking and it was getting in my way.
Afterwards, I made friends with the other rescuer, and we had the most enjoyable conversation that I have ever had in-game.
