A pixel art I finished recently with Aseprite. Still learning so anyone has general advices/resources on structuring layers for drawing 3D poses like this, regardless of software (thinking of Krita in the future)?
I had trouble reasoning about the granularity and grouping when body parts are split and overlap each other. For example in screenshot, skirt has back/front, tail has back/front (split at midpoint), leg/arm L is in the back while leg/arm R is in the front of torso and so on

i don't think there's a general catch-all technique for layering honestly since it varies per-artist how they do it, and it also depends if this was intended to be animated and such to go that length of making each separate layer/folder

to give my 2 cent tho, in general works i just separate layers by 3 major categories such as 1. head (eye, hair, head accessories) 2. body (clothing, body accessory, etc) 3. skin (especially nice if a character has unique things about their skin features) 4. extra/optional (everything else).
whereas if it was meant to be animated even if just slightly, i usually do the same as above but add extra layer for each parts as needed, e.g per limbs and the hair section the bigger/longer the hair is or hairstyle joints like ponytails and whatnot

iunno if that's what you're looking for specifically tho, so sorry if that missed the mark

I see. Your input definitely helps. I should probably rethink how I layer based on use case more. The art I had was only static so the overhead of doing layers at that granularity felt like an overkill sometime when I had to constant switch layers. Will try your approach in next arts to see how it goes

yeah, having to do that process would honestly kill me if i were you lol, i used to do that too where i just had a layer/folder for everything but sometimes you can just makedo with less

i think it applies to pixel style art too but you can also slowly merge n' remove excess layers if you're the type to do sketch/draft/making each lines be per-layer (e.g hair front bang, hair sidelocks, hair back length, etc.) i do my drafts that way so when i adjust them its a lot easier and then merge once i'm satisfied, tho sometimes im lazy and don't do that lol

i also don't mind re-editing/adjusting my art on the fly and adding new layers on top to redraw/paint on top which is a method some artists also do, but don't gotta do that if you're not a fan or don't need to, its just nice to have the mindset that you can be open and do whichever and whatever you want on your piece

Thats mostly it, so ye, it was a bit overkill and I did spend quite some extra time juggling between layers . It's not, but feeling how the pose changes your body does give it some more realism

so like, if you put your hand on a spot on your chest, and raise that side's shoulder, you'd feel that part lift (separating from your hand.) Also, depending on the head/neck slouch, there might be some foreshortening on the head against the torso, obscuring the neck, etc

I’m a beginner at drawing and I’m looking for some critique and advice on how to improve. Sometimes I watch tutorials and a lot of articles say that sharing your work and getting feedback is one of the best ways to find your mistakes, but I don’t really have anyone to share my work with, so I decided to ask here.

I’ll attach all the sketches I’ve done since I bought my sketchbook (about 3 months). I don’t draw every day, but I practice when I can.

I use a regular HB pencil, sometimes black pen.

Before drawing I usually warm up with basic shapes and boxes from different angles. I already see some issues like : my proportions are off, my sketches look messy because I press too hard with pencil, my line confidents sucks etc.

I’d really appreciate any critique, advice or suggestions on what I should focus on next and how to practice more efficiently.

the finer details would be down to the clothes more than the anatomy atp imo, i see those clothing creases and the arm/hand-detail thingy, that'll make or break how the actual composition will do instead of anatomy minmaxxing

just going off what I was taught. If I was still in school my profs would have knocked me for drawing the action line in the wrong direction, (it should be flipped and I only just realized that now,) at the end of the day. do you, but even for simple poses looking at refs and trying the pose out for yourself before sketching are going to help with ironing out anatomy details

So, probably the first thing you should address is the line confidence. And really the only way to practice that is to straight-up draw line and curves until you are absolutely sick of them. Then draw some more. Then, when it's time to actually draw something, commit to the pencil stroke and go full banana. Your under sketch and roughs should also be treated the same way to get that extra practice in, and that's usually the hardest part about developing line confidence

After that, if you want to practice anatomy and proportions, you just gotta keep grinding life drawings. 1 minute, 3 minute, 10 minute, 30 second drills
Then play with the proportions to figure out what style actually is. Because all "style" is in the most basic sense is a play in proportion of: shape, line weight, shading and color and how you turn those dials is basically how you develop unique styles

you're just starting off still, flaws in pieces you make are normal, you shouldn't focus too much on that but focus on your fundamentals which you seem to be aware of with your warmups.
pen control and line drafting is something you have to drill into your muscle memory, it shouldn't be something you should consciously think about, you'll naturally get better at it when you're practicing. there's no shortcut to it other than to just honestly have fun and enjoy the process

what worked for me was to combine exercises with an actual artwork

like if i wanted to practice perspective, id try to make an artwork focused on perspective

Tinkering with Hytale modeling in Blockbench and started with this derpy WIP Tutel. Is it art? Is it gaming? Is it a project? Will I finish it before the heat death of the universe? Neither human nor A.I. can say for sure. (Currently it's at a pretty arbitrary size and the texturing is just to get a feel for it, once I get around to importing a character model for reference I'll resize it accordingly, and will likely end up with better UV resolution due to the way Hytale model textures work.)
