I actually tried so hard to go through the proper process digitally with proper sketches and blocking out colours and everything instead of rushing it like always I think I did good in the end? I posted it in art but ill put it here too :)) I do think I still need to take extra care with proportions though since I messed it up slightly

That's not what I'm referring to, by regular use i meant writing stuff down, which is usually quick short strokes and often legible enough to read

Drawing and painting requires different muscles, lines often come out wobbly especially with longer strokes, which a lot of people compensate with shorter quick ones to fill out the intended line

yeah that kind of is a problem because now the 1 line you want is buried under scribbles

sketches apparently look good because your brain picks out the best line among the pile. and if you don't have the skill to bring it out then it looks worse

that's why I recommend not doing scratchly lines until you are comfortable making clean lineart if that is your goal

and you don't have to suffer every time, you can just do straight clean lines every now and again

I never bothered to learn how to draw backgrounds since I don’t have an eye for landscape

Tbh I struggle with depth, I just score lucky when shading

When I shade, I tend to use reddish for skin since BLOOD (ewww)

Then I use overlay lighter color and put it around where it’ll be light

Then I use the color of the light (light pink-light yellow most of the time) to highlight areas

i use hard-edge pencil thing and just draw shadows wherever
a gradient here and there, such as for interior of cat ears or something

should probably use krita instead tbh, and tablet pen
but getting the right pen in the software, and then also getting the right pen pressure when i stroke, is difficult and the whole experience just feels janky tbh

So true, more than I thought as well. These were drawn but a few hours from each other and with rapidly increasing skill (second one once looked better before the excessive pen shading i also didnt use any reference for it). Very surprised with how well it went considering my only real experience with art is drawing copious amounts of donald duck and scrooge mcduck drawings as a young child.

Sidenote: Just finished playing a little game called signalis and since it has completely taken over my emotions I figure I might as well learn to draw so i can draw some of the characters n stuff so I'll probably be posting more here

i see you did shading in b/w, which coloring method do you use?

That was technically just to add a little pazzaz to the line art, but I'm not even sure of what the method is called. When I do most of my shading though, I make a base general color layer and to get better, more dimensional looking shading, I make individual changed opacity layers at correct areas (according to light direction) to get the affect of using many colors. Though, that may be kind of how I started with digital shading. I'm a little more adaptable now if I'm trying to accomplish a stylized look.

It's difficult for me to explain. But using that method, I used to get the kind of almost 3D-looking design you'd see in this older one haha

well, people who doing art in grayscale and then coloring use different methods: gradient maps, curves, blending modes, overlays, coloring lineart itself and others
im find doing art in grayscale first as you more comfortable, as i dont need to focus on colors and just doing values, but i have problem doing coloring part after that, so im curious how you do it?

Yeah you’re reading it right. For that poster I’m doing lineart + value/grayscale shading first, then I’ll render it in full color after. I like locking in the lighting/forms with values before I commit to the palette. The actual color pass is mostly in Sketch.io: I lay in flats/local colors, then I use extra layers for shading/highlights (blend modes like Multiply/Screen/Overlay when available, plus opacity control) and I’ll sometimes tint the lineart so it all harmonizes. I’m not trying to keep the values 100% untouched either. I’ll let color shift contrast a bit if it looks better. Then I take it into GIMP for small finishing touches ( Levels/Curves, tiny saturation tweaks, and any little fixes/cleanup). I only use gradient-map-type stuff if I want a very specific stylized palette fast.

Hope all of that makes sense! I'm very tired at the moment, so it may have taken me a bit longer to even realize what you were asking. I think I have it now though?

It's just free mostly and I love the fill-tool and everything being simple. I wouldn't recommend following all of my methods though since I only recently got the capability of a wacom drawing pad. I've essentially been using my MACs finger pad and my fingers up until this point since that's all I had xD
