everything they teach u to simplify humans into shapes don’t actually help you understand why the simplification works. Humans hard to draw precisely because we approach it in a manner that doesn’t properly portray its actual complexities in anatomy, proportion, and perspective.

simplifying i feel is more the step you take once you’ve already understood the basics of those more complicated concepts

i always tell myself before a drawing i’ll have a good palette ready and as i draw more and more it ends up looking saturated again

my solutions to my colors these day is to reference a lot of different artists and their palettes and try to work with that limited palette to understand their color choices better

at the very least i can spot my color issues earlier than before so i have time to fix it before it all goes downhill again

Yeah it is! Some of them have beautiful color choices which I still can’t wrap my head around sometimes. I’ve recently been following a bit of the chaotic nature of Mika Pikazo and LAM’s colors for the neuro easter contest piece. Not really my cup of tea as they tend to do saturated colors (which I want to escape from) but it does provide some neat insights into their style.

I do experiment a bit when coloring but they are not that broad I feel like

it all boils down to whether you’re choosing colors for the purpose of style or realism because realism actually have some pretty consistent rules that i find to be potentially easy to master once memorized.

style on the other hand hmm…I feel as if you actually just box your saturation to particular regions and absolutely do not deviate from that region, it tends to show a particular style in your work

like desaturated focused artists never go past the half way mark towards the saturation spectrum even with their most saturated colors

i can put some names of some artists with pretty interesting palettes here if you’re interested in studying them. Tamomoko, zeenchin, hamukukka, artof666k, negillustration, yuumeiart all have pretty different approaches to color and lighting that i think are worth looking into. By far my favorite palette’s is Rella’s though. Perfect lighting imo.

this looks like Mika right? LAM is similar so sometimes its hard to tell. Mika really takes advantage of highly saturated colors and layer tricks with digital art

it was from mika i learned about using details to create a focal point

in all of Mika’s works, the areas surrounding the face are so chaotic and detailed

and yet the face itself lacks a lot of detail

which actually draws your eye to it

I drew something that is hybrid if evil neuro and tifa recently for example

during drawing it was like... tifa has red eyes... evil neuro has red eyes

also it's so weird to notice that hands are not symmetric... like real ones... fingers are different lengths between own hands and stuff... then you're just so used to them that you might have not noticed before

subtle asymmetric nature of body sides is actually something I try to utilize with my drawings like... it's fine other side eyebrows are not in perfect angle with the other etc

wearing a spike choker and a spike bracelet while drawing and somehow not scratching the tablet... has made me good to keep my hand elevated while drawing... a good habit I suppose... some other accessories... it also makes art doing process to feel having more weight and I just find it more comfortable and confident when there is a choker around my neck which helps me to focus and stuff... I draw a lot of hoodies due I find them comfortable too... so yeah art reflecting their artists is a real thing I suppose

At first glance Evil's model looks pretty similar to Neuro.... Evil's model is actually a different beast, There's so much tiny little difference to Neuro's, I have to edit and add a lot of stuff.
For Example: Evil's Hair is a lot more Sloppy(?) than Neuro's, Has Wider Eye, & Torn Ribbons
