ayyy ask your teacher for his opinion on what the popularity on itch.io is based on
a professor can probably figure this out
Okay good, they are literally one of the least popular games. But still messed up that even though we are 11th most rated, we aren't even 100th in popularity
I'm second most rated and I'm 44th in popularity haha
Exactly
the curiosity to know is killing me, cause there's definitely a corelation
cause abandoned pub and most of the top 5 rated are also top 5 popular
Compile all data into my DMs
I think Popularity is a huge problem because less of a chance for games that deserve to be seen
i have one class and one meeting after this
wow, this game's popularity dropped by a lot
It's not one specific thing, it's a combination of things, the data that you see is important but the hidden data from itchio is also important, I strongly believe reputation matters a lot because you could just create 1000 bots to see and play your game to cheat the system
what was it?
You have unlocked new role
it used to be like top 20-25
that's useful right about now
both my account and @lavish escarp account was created for this game jam
You got your embed perms!
we had no prior interactions
how do team accounts work? the account itself is new, but admins have history
And my game is now third in popularity
I'm literally advertising our game on every social I can
Oops didn't mean to reply
Recent accounts at best have 0 reputation so the algorithm doesn't care that much about them, I have 3 years and a lot of games published, I think even reviewing games and doing dev logs matter.
I think that the account that uploaded the game matters the most
both accounts 0 reputation
also
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213278
this outlier once again
look through that account
once again no shade to anyone, I'm just trying to understand the data
its just interesting to go through data points and figuring things out
no shade taken, it's an interesting question
That and neuro64 are also a rare case for me, my theory is that important people played those games, the popularity rose, people wondered why those games where popular and interacted with them, increasing popularity even more
@torpid bridge can you share your data as well?
I mean, sure, but my account was created since last Game Jam
the analytics one
Oh yeah
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213022 Shameless plug of my own :D
I think if popularity of players mattered, Fragmented would be much higher tbh
I'll bookmark it and give it a play later
thank u <3
idk how to find it on mobile either haha
All I know is this
click on profile, dashboard, select analytics of game (why is the text so small)
I think on steam tags are pretty important, dunno how it is on itch tho
we got some views from the tags actually
this theory might actually hold, cause most of the higher rated Visual Novel tagged games are in the middle
We've had a few randoms find our game by tags, completely outside the jam
Or maybe it's just random because itchio knows browser games perform worse than download only, and this is just to give them a chance and not let every game be browser based.
there's quite a few non browsers that have overall better data, like fragmented and evil's malice
Our game is fairly high in popularity, and for our case it definetly could be site history, since my account is fairly old + has a lot of popular past submissions as a result of my asset packs.
fragmented gets alex boost, makes sense
no i mean, in comparison to treasures of the sand
Fragmented is a game from Alex, that weights a lot
views have the same shape
exactly my point, it has Alex boost and its still below 2 other non browser games with very little rates
I believe treasure of the sand was randomly picked by the algorithm
3 people found our game from google, did they search 'troubleshooting' and find our game instead
I mean that would be very disingenous to the "popular" category and if that's the case, then its, statistics + a pinch of voodoo magic
HAHAHA
Maybe they perform well outside of the game jam by the algorithm logic
If you haven't played it yet or rated it yet, please do! Also make sure to let others know about it! I know most of the people who have the most popularity had people who saw the Livestream only and played their games https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3212555
for context @placid salmon https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213334
this is also above alex's game, and its download only as well
just by looking at it I feel like it's an outlier
yea, so I'm collecting data points to see how it works haha
there's 2 outliers
in the top 10
Yeah, I mentioned it earlier, I think those games perform well outside of the game jam, internally itchio shares them and users find them using tags, maybe they have a good ctr
My games 11th most rated, but 159th most popular
||can we not care about numbers and just have fun
||
neither of them are here in the discord, which is why I'm trying to make an inference based on existing data points to see what these two "outliers" did right
and that's why I'm prioritizing the metric outside of jam
oh oh, I'm just mathing
I'm not complaining
I'm genuinely curious and would like as much data point as I can get
The thing with game jams is that they end, I think itch cares more for games they think will still do good even after the game jam ends
its mostly downtime for the chat anyway haha
did u also participate?
no sadly but i do play the games and upload it to YT
yes, so far the datapoints I'm using is from the game's analytics page, not the jam data
oh cool :D
this specifically
oh
any ones you recommend?
these 2 that i enjoyed atm:

A Neuro-sama Birthday Game Jam Submission
Game Jam @ https:// itch.i...
Yeah but that data is too simple, I believe that the visits by url and domain matter too
These sprites look so good! it was actually one of the first games i played
But we may never know the true rules of the algorithm, the good things is that I have my perms and that's all that matters
you should try this one
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3212767
its very creative (but it requires you to expose your desktop if you're streaming it)
expose your desktop
instant download
ahaha yea, I just like collecting data and making inferences
That is so real
booting up bandicam rn
gonna play some games while waiting for vod parts to download
The rabbit hole goes deep, nationality, gender, activity inside the page and a lot of more things probably matter too
I think that's too intangible, activity inside the page can be inferred from comments and plays. I don't think most people exposes their gender to itch.io, and nationality karma is just weird for a site like this imo
but yea I don't have much to contribute to those points though
If they log in with a Google account they are
I mean we're talking about a website that can just randomly die cause of Funko
I doubt they have people segmenting data like that
I guess so, maybe it's better not to know
Going to do a quick plug before I head to bed. Would love if you played my short game! https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213244
I'll play this and leave a comment later!
OH WAIT I CAN PLAY OUR GAME ON MOBILE
NEVERMIND OUR GAME IS MOBILE FRIENDLY AS WELL!!!
Lol
Thank you!
If its built on unity and you use the old input system, you don’t need any extra work for webgl to support mobile touch
We used Godot
Ah, then it probably follows the same logic of having mouse and touch be the same thing
I completely forgot about that
I think I have the answer, popularity is most likely impressions/views
Should've put Booba in the thumbnail
Understandable
I did a simple experiment and farmed 1k impressions without much new views, and my popularity dropped
The correlation is more or less proven, now I just need to replicate the results
sacrifice in the name of science
Bro, if they don't play the game it ruins your ctr
Its cool, I’m dying to know the metrics
My ctr skyrocketed to 4.16 with 15k impressions, crazy
I think that the clip that was uploaded to YouTube did a lot of heavy lifting
I like how this channel went from gam devving to SEO optimisation cuz itch.io made the mistake of including an algorithm
I got a second supporting relationship
seo optimizers
👉🚪
Ever since we started talking about treasures of the sand, its been getting alot of impressions without views (theory is that it had very low impressions but high view count ratio from the start), it dropped 3 places
what how do u do that
interestingly my game did not gain any notable views from vedal showing the game jam games
there'a site for that
smh viewers don't want to play the gamejam games
Analyze your Itch.io Game Jam results and view jam statistics
all this effort, for what?
To get vedal to watch v*dolf fuck his mate as a tutel
Best part is he chose top for v*dolf
top 5% popularity = 500 views
Viewers didn't get to see my game because vedal quitted so it actually probably helped me more than if he actually played it fully
true that
They wanna see the tutels breed firsthand
Tbf
Your game has such a simple but effective catch to it
I played it like 6 times
And showed it to a couple friends a few times
Your game and sea of memories have a lot of replayability
Since they're non linear, and you can win lots of diff ways
wait i have less than 500 views but:
Your game ranked 12th in popularity. Thats top 4% in popularity.
He only had a 15% chance to get that turtle from 25, he was going to quit anyway because of the breeding so the fact that happened is destiny to me.
Also that turtle was the last boss of my detective Neuro game that I submitted last year and it appeared on stream so I didn't see why not add it again.
Not to mention you don’t need alot of “neuroverse” lore to enjoy turtles mating
So it becomes very easy to recommend and click in
the last hour or two has been us trying to figure out the popularity metric works XD
@placid salmon plug ur last year game pls
Mine is 13th in popularity and its not even a complete game, so take it with a grain of salt
Impression over views, I did an experiment and have 2 conclusive data
Yeah, people can choose how to play it and that's good for retention, probably if they spend more time playing is better for the algorithm
I got negative karma
But I'm surprised its that high, I didnt even promote it at all
oh i see. i sense that the download number matters a lot for that
Compared to my game which is linear, short, and difficult
Most people blast through the content
Or give up
Will try later
you wanna see last years games? :3
Yeah
There’s a few factors to it, but overall visual novels and rpgs will have a popularity debuff
Instead of playing the game of someone you will make people play their own game
I only started watching Neuro I think march this year
and yet i didnt even rate high enough for vedal to play it lmao
How many impressions
Interesting, I remember that game
Oh it only measures 7 days
Yea this week
Probably alot of people researching past jams
And people who clicked on it after abandoned r chive
haha could be
Iirc your game was one of the top in the visual category when I was doing research
yea we were 4 on visual
I can't seem to get through the part where you have to look outside the game for answers
i do believe that screenshot i used as a cover massively drove clicks for me
In your desktop there’s a new folder with txt files of neuro corpses
i cant believe i almost didnt have a cover
yeah cover definitely makes a difference
Hover over any corpse for the id and delete the corpse
next time i'll know
covers are very important, spent a good amount of time on our cover
I'm pretty happy with my cover
sadly ato was more busy this year so i didnt get as much from him
but my roster is expanding!
i have more and more characters to use every year >:D
maybe ill ask my artist friend next time, she's not doing anything anyway
Cover in question (plug) https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3211830
ig since we're all posting our data, if it will be helpful
It's usually the first thing I do before coding
real coders dont need graphics
(keep in mind thou Vedal played our game so some of the stats is probably wierd.)
Just have it a screenshot of the title screen EZ
a whole year of analytics
eyo that's really good
i still think it would have been funny to use the screenshot of abandoned archive's steam page as my starting menu, but i sensed that would look make the game look jank and unprofessional xD
I'm considering remaking the exact same game with the story fleshed out tho
very good sprites
And with graphic done better
its 4PM and sleepy
9am pot of coffee in hand
time for a nap
I bought aseprite for the first time for the game jam, and I've never made a 2d game before, I feel like over the game jam I learned how to actually make the game I wanna make
im on duty T_T
this game was actual cinema I loved it
c: thank you
it's almost 11 pm for me and I'm still working on fixing some game issues. Really liked the comments people gave
helped me consider a better perspective
Shit I'd never made a game. Period
i didnt even get to finish so ill be updating it sometime soon
Just some frameworks and player controllers and enemy scripts
stuff like the ellie and layna events that are missing, and im kinda thinking there ought be an evil neuro boss fight before the last room
I'm astonished people enjoyed my game honestly
rn I'm saving up some money for a DAW, I wanna get into music production for my games
i also gave the dialogue some touchups already so it pauses a bit for punctuation and theres also a dialogue sound effect that i forgot to put in
use audacity clueless
if you are a programmer, sonicpi is cool. reaper also has a free trial and is very reasonably priced
sonicpi is free btw
also, if you guys have any card game recommendations lmk
trying to get into turn based games thanks to this gamejam
i also need to brainstorm how i can sensibly add in lines that hint at the secret detail i didnt really explain properly that Jim Bag doesn't exist, and Neuro is just schizo
yea, so far I think I can very confidently conclude that views/impression = popularity
The sprite I made for this game jam was based on one I made over a year ago, and it was my first time drawing a pixel art Neuro, I think I improved a lot
I don't know about card games but have you tried 13 sentinels
I do have audacity
mostly use it for audio recording
I don't know about turn based but a cool card based game is Neon White
oh I've heard of them but never played it myself
slay the spire
im a big fan of slay the spire, so much i made a knock off version of slay the spire myself
yeah I'm just trolling dw
yooo, that's sick. it's smooth too
I always tried to finish games but I never achieved it until my first game jam, this is what I always recommend to begginer game devs
oh I know, but there are some people that have done it as a challenge
I'll add that too
@placid salmon the time pressure is insane tho lol
there are free good daws. reaper, for example
Inscryption or stack lands
I didn't do any art this year (I did programming instead) but here's something from last year (it never made it in the game)
I'll look into that
I'm only familiar with fl studio and ableton live. I tried fami studio for chiptone music but I think it's too limiting for a beginner like me
That's the best part, if you can learn to create your own dead lines, you will be able to complete commercial games, I already made 2
I've added those on my wishlist
I only remembered inscryption cuz I watched markiplier play it
The time pressure also forces you to refine your workflow and get creative
ohhh I remember your triple A game team
Last year I made a full 3d environment in a single day, that was fun
that team split into two this year
CRAZY FN ROBOT BODY
Our team from last year I think went to three different teams
damn, both were really good games too
In our case, two solo devs managed to pull in 6 other people.
Next year I'm def joinning a team this time, 3 day solo is way too short
I think I'm gonna solo again tho
im just happy i managed to pull the person i was looking forward to pulling the most, Milk Tea September
Also, for the game a neuro who can't sing, I remembered bringing out my penlight when I heard the ost
fun experience

duality of devs
hahaha
next year I'm getting a story writer and a second programmer and a sound guy
I couldn't pull even one
I'm gonna get better at unity before the next one for sure tho a good bit of slowness was unfamiliarity with the scene system and unitys prefab and asset system
I join teams because I already do my own projects alone
We did pull outside the normal pool, we are nicknamed the #programming team for a reason.
I spent too much time with the prefabs, now I'm a bit more experienced and know I could be way faster
for me I'll need an artist and a musician
splitting my attention from looking for reference art and audio samples took a large chunk of my time
and also I like meeting new people (or old ones too)
I would be willing to find a musician tho
i have no idea how game jam would work with a team tbh
especially if its not like artist and programmer
what do you mean?
like how would two programmers really cooperate without slowign each other down
bigger the team the more important communication becomes
oh, use interfaces
erm, use git?
trust me on that one
have a lead programmer set up all the interface first, then have all the programmers build the services
Usually for teams larger then 3 they have a manager / leader which helps too
Despite how massive our team was, we still only had one dev
fair fair
if you'd consider me I'd be happy to fill a role on programming
If you have more than 2 of any role then you want a lead of that role
im used to doing rapid prototypes where i basically get a working prototype in a few hours and then do incremental improvements
lead dev, lead artist, etc
ask again when we're closer to the date haha
or just direct everything as the project leader, game jams are small, its manageable to have a single director
yea, true
sounds too much like work
it is
it does ahaha
I mean, gotta make sure everything is falling into place right?
I was co-leader, but we also had some people in charge of certain things even above us. A lot of our own ideas went in because of that, building around everyone's image of the game.
leader really just meant making sure we were in the correct direction.
one thing we did that I would recommend: when theme dropped, we had everyone go mute for 10 minutes to brainstorm solo, then come back with their ideas
for any programmers who want to work in a team/want to form a team of programmers though, I highly suggest looking into service pattern
My experience with a team inside game jams is like this:
The first one I made most of the work and had to guide the team with a writer and a musician/sound designer, it was fun.
The other one I had a team with a solo dev and a musician, we didn't share the same vision with the other dev and the team dissolved but it was cool anyway, I wanted to take things easy but the other dev had a lot of passion since it was his first game jam and wanted to make a masterpiece.
It was a little intimidating having to learn other people's code yea
Both of our games turned out to be good btw, I like working with a team of 3 the most.
I would get killed in a team, my code is apparently unreadable
tools handle my code formatting
I'd admit that in our case there was only one possible dev. Custom engine and all.
once you have interfaces set up, team members can just do their own method of making things and it should stick, easily testable etc
yea, code linters
that reminds me of my pirate jam, the other dev would not listen when I told him that his vision was too hard, or that we really needed to design a game loop from the beginning
formatters are different from linters
and man, he had a thing about changing or touching any of his work
Extremely fucked variable names, cursed structures, the same codes and prefabs being used for like 7 different things
ouch
I made a change to make the level less cluttered looking, being the artist role but he got upset
because I changed his shader
oh wait, I forgot, formatters are those that automatically try to make it fit a coding style right?
that game jam was a disaster
yep, for python i use black, which has literally only one option (line length) lol
God I still need to learn how shaders work I still have no fucking clue
love it ngl
learn HLSL
GLSL ^
damn, yea the one instance a teammate can screw you over
oh boy thats a good reason not to do anything with shaders during game jam
i looked at my engine's documentation and was like yeah nah
always remember you are there to have fun and if y ou are not having fun whats the point
there is some rng yea
I tried to implement a shader but was like nah fuck I got no time to learn this within game jam since I have 0 experience with them
GLSL makes more sense yea
using a custom engine for a game-jam is crazy, I respect it
Scenes was okay enough, pretty easy
Yeah, working with a team sometimes involves compromising your artistic vision
i dont mind people touching my code, but i was the only person who understood how the engine worked.
so nobody was able to help and the programming is barely functional
both unity and unreal have graph editors for shaders, you don't need glsl or hlsl for them
Projectiles and controllers I have experience with so that didn't take too long
Animations too
Shaders
Fucking 0
I find the shader graphs pretty limiting sometimes, but maybe cause I don't explore it enough, I mostly just use hlsl in unity
agreed, some times one is just not cooking
yeah, gotta respect it
you just need a dictator
yups, also learning something new too
cuz ngl I was also in that end once
me and my friends joined a game jam and it was the first time I tried using git and version control. my friend showed me how much spaghetti I made that we had to scrap the game and try again next time
That's usually me against myself, can't hurt other people if you are alone, but man do I get near death experience after finishing a jam
in this case, the one who was not cooking was him, he wanted to go with an elemental theme when the theme was shadows and had this concept of the whole ass environment changing when we picked up items, like firestorms and shit
honestly, people complain about this sorta stuff when they talk about their actual jobs, but for a fun hobby thing its insane
I mean, I think game jams are going to be sweaty no matter what
People can be prideful, I agree that he should have let you cook instead tho
the fun to be had is completing the challenge
wait wut?
we had some people from baidu too!
i mean vedal has the bilibili stream
I'm not doing this for fun or hobby tho, but I'm happy for the people that do

I have an untapped market to get rates
True, a bigger team gets a bigger scope
any idea where that community is?
agreed
if you are chinese shouldnt you know
China
maybe check weibo first
Go there in person and promote your game
Some guys will post things on tieba, sort of a chinese version of reddit
I mean I don't really speak it, but I'll fumble my way in somehow
TBH I think most chinese swarm just go posting under the bilibili clips
oh you mean you arent in china
Oh wait, I also got one it seems
i guess that makes sense
did any of the chinese swarm make a submission, I wonder
I join game jams to get more popularity and followers so I can sell more games and also get data of what will perform best when developing games, this is a job for me

i guess i didnt know people did that
Of course helping other devs that are starting is really cool too
I just like Neurosama
make a paid game jam game power move

same here
but I also like neuro so this is just a plus
if we get a game jam for evil's birthday, I'll triple my team
i pretty much just join neuro jam cuz its an excuse to get neuro themed stuff haha
Haha yeah evil's birthday will be eventful
EXACTLY
valid
when's evils birthday?
March 25
I wonder if it's possible to assemble a whole ass studio
alright i'll make sure to forget that

that would be so chaotic
imagine we all made one giant submission and automatically won
all in voice chat
and we all get lava lamps c:
I hope it goes well, feel free to share it once it's finished
meowing
I think i can handle the infrastructure for a 50 man team if we have people who want to do it haha
That checks out
but for a 3 day jam, its gonna be 2 days of work at max

if you cram 24 hours of planning, it can work
back when we had a public voice channel on a game server, we had like 20-30 people there meowing when game was down
technically we'll cover all time zones so the game is always in production
Oh, yeah, btw we are open sourcing our game and turning it into a community project
but it wouldn't be great and just 1 guy screwing up is bad
what makes you think I slept in that 3 days HAHA
The truth is that I like Evil more than Neuro
🙏 Please make next year jam a week long
but later we want to make the gdd of the original idea and ask neurocord to join in
same
me too
well you gotta sleep so your brain works and you can work more effectively
i think i slept more than i worked on my game
I REALLY wanted to do an evil themed game, but Neuro just makes so much more sense for the subathon and theme of the jam
I can do more in a week than in 3 days
at least solo
also, my brain cooked best every time I took a break
damn, and here I am making a game revolving around evil
I think 3 days is due to Vedal severly underestimating the length of this subathon
hopefully he has more confidence to give us a week long jam this year
tbh I dont think anyone expected the timer to explode like that
neuro isn't even mentioned in the current state of our game
same ngl, the swarm surprises me sometimes
oh, she was mentioned in dialogue a couple times I think
Exactly, that's why she's always the protagonist in my games but evil is always in the game too
then she exists
which is why if there is a game jam for evil's birthday, I'm gonna assemble an avengers level team

original concept had Neuro dead which is why we play as Evil
now Neuro is the villain
while we have conversations going
mandatory game plug
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213059
plug time
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213324
we are hoping to start an advertising campaign by posting the OST on youtube
we just need names for the songs
Neuro-song.wav
welp I'm off to bed, night night
how long is this again? been on my radar and bookmarked but haven't gotten to it cause I worry its long
I wonder if any one made Vivy reference with the music stuff
people were complaining about it being too short
which is totally fair
because it is
anyway uhm...
azaka mixed it for us, its currently called 2024-12-29-Project_1-04-8.5-GameMaster.wav
there's also a streaming master
15-20 mins, shorter if you rush for completion instead of looking around the directories
that's a good sign innit, that means people want more haha, mine is 10~ minutes and nobody asked for more
(we spent first two days on systems and had to change them
)
my friend was intimidated by the clock that does nothing
featuring minawan (thats YOU!), reviewed as "laggy as frick but cool weapon concept" by many, "surviwan" is now out on itch.io and waiting for minawan! wanwan! https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3211255
I had to disable 2 timers that did nothing at before submission too hahaha
just wondering, is anny supposed to be the only enemy? cuz i want to play more of it
yeah agreed, I was happy about that too
guys, HELP, I have no idea how to beat neuro wars level 8, I keep pressing 'next turn' and have surpassed turn 50 for a while now...
LOOOOL
I left it in because I thought it might add to the atmosphere
SOFT LOCKED
how to beat this leve???
kill the boxes, you blocked the enemy from spawning units'
oh, I thought the boxes just spawn kill them
thanks
they arent spawning so the pre planned attackwaves are not decreasing. and to beat clear the map the preplanned attack waves should be zero, no enemies in the map, and enemy bases are blocked
maybe every time your score gets a 1 in it
so uhh the player is too good?
classic
the player decided cheese is not enough, proceeds to softlock with extra grilled cheese
I like how beloved Cerber is in this community
man i love cerber
she deserves it
cerber is cute
pass it on
Huh, I wonder if anyone ended up finding my photography through the game jam
I used the credits section of my itch page to plug my photography
I'm plug king
amazingly i think someone actually clicked the links in my description for source code etc
I really wanted to include a rickroll
my repo has been cloned three times!
It's interesting to me you guys want to make your games open source
why didn't you
well i licensed it non-commercial
Ic
Time constraints
i wonder how many games for next jam will launch vrchat
I decided I would just bully them one by one
Nah, after what Alex did, Vedal is 100% gonna play anything behind a VM now
LOL
well not that what alex did changed that anyway
fwiw ive used sandboxie, worked great for games back when it was paid at least
and super easy setup
just have fun and thats fine with me
https://sandboxie-plus.com/ i guess its open source not
maybe a mod should tell him about that
uhhhh
wasd to move, mouse to attack
if you need further pointers ||inventory is at the bottom||
how do I kill them fast enough without my pc lagging from spawns
its okay, its pretty fun haha
I'll rate it in abit
gonna go get coffee
tbh its not as bad as the prototype i made like 5 years ago in pygame
quick, call in sick
customer meet?
Internship dealio
ahh
I also have another piece of work to finish up to send to a client
Haha no
On the bright side I am done with the hard part of that work
But I'm so lazy
I also need to replace the Mobo on my desktop
And get new fitted sheets
I love being an adult
it only gets better
Fucken better
I mean it's not so bad honestly just a couple things I need to do
There's cheese in the fridge and bread on the shelf
Well no I didn't put the bread back earlier it's probably bread on the bed

bread on the bed?
even though submissions are done i've just been fixing my game waiting to update after the game jam
Bread on the bed
bread on the bed
My flatmates are knobs I keep my bread in my room
weegee is making a vid for the song, and we're trying to come up with a name.
release shouldn't be too far away
im close to fixing the game's cutscenes
Good morning y’all
Good morning @rotund rampart !!
Good chance for vedal to play your game today
Will he play more jam games today?
thought today is minecraft day
Would be sick though
let neuro play minecraft while he plays jams
which would be on stream?
Neuro could play in a picture in picture frame.
people would complain about who is in the main and who is in the secondary spot in the pip
people could go watch someone else
i backread the chat and just wanted to say to keep it up! from figuring out the popularity algo to reflecting on your games, this chat is awesome
as for the duration, 3 days is really short and the start date isn't very ideal, but you gotta admit that the time constraint helped you sharpen your vision to the essentials
it is really rough though, so good job
the time constraint helped me do anything at all
I think Neuro War is the best one, who's agree with me
I feel like it starting on boxing day would've been better because I believe it is actually a holiday in certain countries
the time limit was fun yes, I wouldn't have been able to sleep as little as I did if it had been longer x)
yeah, but many people would prefer to spend that time with their families
careful bro
after it was over i had the longest sleep in the whole year
was almost late to the 2pm start time
Yee I'm sleeping like a baby now xD
since people where posting them earlier, here's an example of me messing up the marketing part x) I think this is the lowest CTR I've seen here
really happy that you think that about my work
however, i still believe the abandoned pub are leagues above me
katsu is trying to solve how the systems works in itch
just gonna drop this for katsudondx
In case someone wants to go and rate all the games, I've decided to make a spreadsheet with them sorted by submission order. Idk if that's gonna be helpful but I hope so
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1z44HCtTF3H-D5a-vUYDg1FdsKCQAIZFtRkzVel3K8OE/edit?usp=sharing
My CTR is probably so bad because this was my cover picture for over 2 days, very dark and monotone, not that eye catching, hard to tell what's going on
I've been seeing a lot more natural reviews/visits since I've updated it
oh wait I skipped a row there
btw did you also submit a game?
I played that one
Oh @hasty drift you’re here, can you share your analytics with me? Want to confirm if my inference about popularity is correct
I am at the gym rn

Just lurking between sets
Thanks! I’ll look through the data again when I’m free later
I think I fixed it so if anyone needs u can just download sheet and use ig
not sure if it even is needed tbh
If you have voting acc it does tell you which ones you rated
Ik but I just thought a list like that might be useful
daily plug
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213324
i made a fixed version, link is in the games description.
it just fixes the animations, no difference in gameplay.
I'll also plug ig
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213344
btw we are only 120 rates away from average 10 rates per game
@civic fractal hehe
anyway theres some problem with your game and opera but i just switched to firefox and it runs fine
on opera your game will absolutely shit itself in ways i have never seen before
the audio dragging part isn't working so well...
If I move my mouse too quickly, it stops dragging
the music is FIRE???!!!
🔥 music
Erm 2000 fps?
did you consider, uhm, capping it?
tutel boss man pls play this game on stream
nah, even at 2000 its only using 30% of my 3060ti
the 2k fps probably has to do with opera shitting itself
oh, ye imma add a cap then
drops to 15 fps, game completely freezes, then proceedes to freeze and crash my entire browser
i think just add a disclaimer to not play the game on opera
google limits it to vsync, which is 165 in my case
i tested chrome and firefox, never opera tho
thats understandable
i wouldnt expect yall to make it work for everything in such a short time frame
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3211600
Self plug while I’m away
Oh wait that’s not mine
lmaoo
Self plug 2.0
my game is built to run on 30fps and only 30fps, i dont know why some people say its lagging in firefox
people might be mistaking the 30fps as lag
or there is actually lag in firefox, but idk. you'd have to test it
okies
HOLY SHIT HOW DO PEOPLE PLAY ON FIREFOX???
its like moving at half speed as chrome
Can't say I felt the game was laggy.
Anyone know who this is? Dying to know what feedback they wanted to give, but they never followed up after I replied
his or mine?
Linking movement to framerate is a classic
Yours? Ah - I see.
its not laggy anymore, in the fixed version
but if you play the game-jam version:
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213324
Neuro hiding in your walls POV
not the first time this happened tbh
in the alpha version after minigame 1 you would spawn on the chair, and could then parkour over the wall
jump on the table then the monitor then you phase through the ceiling and cant get back in
Neuro (plush) lives rent free
but you can still interact with the stuff so its not softlocked
shit, that does indeed work to get out of bounds
i cant fix that, would require changing the 3D models
fuck it, its a feature
My high score in life dream memory. Can anyone beat it?
feels like an ad
fixed 👍 , also added to 60fps cap
give me 2 min to upload to itch
the slider in minigame 3 has the same issue
F
oh so challenges, i challenge you to beat mission 1, mission 2 and mission 3 on the first turn
https://ishinada.itch.io/neuro-wars
Super pinball rouge
Level 4 noob vs level 100 pro
brother, do you know what a screenshot is?
Yes, but taking them on my PC is annoying
youu dont have to take a picture of your screen, they have a solution for that
is it?
Yes. I usually do stuff on my phone
i feel like most OS handle screenshots pretty well
if you're on window you can window+shift+s to select a chunck of your screen to sreenshot
Thanks. That's actually helpful, because I only knew how to do the whole screen, meaning I had to crop everything else out
np, I abuse this shortcut daily x)
Windows shift s saves it to clipboard
is this user on the server?
So you can just control v into discord to send the image
just wanted to contact them regarding a bug
Incredibly helpful
probably ye, just dont know who
and if you need to save the image to file you can find it in your notifications on the bottom left of your screen, there's a save option after you click on it
bottom right*
It's just a goated feature all over
I played this one, it was pretty good
ty
100% agree, its a fun concept for a rougelike/lite? that makes use of player choice for stats/items and movement for the walking sections to avoid enemies, is so good
i cant explain it properly, but dodging enemies with movement is harder and feels great when you succeed
where do u check that stuff btw
oh wow my team's game made front page im so happy there's a chance vedal will play it
analytics
I've played though this game too, was quite fun - albeit a bit short. Was expecting something like a boss fight.

that stuff right?
wrong screenshot?
yep
@lavish escarp if you got a second can you send me your most updated analytics?
yeah I was planning on it, but I spent a lot of time squashing bugs (and making a 3d card render for some reason) so the amount of content suffered from it
ah no im showing like the button to get to analytics
A good lesson for the next gamejam I participate in
almost twice more than mine xd
what I DO know for a fact is that CTR has nothing to do with popularity
yeah CTR is just a way to tell how good your cover image and game name are, not really reflective of the actual game
whats ctr anyways?
Click through rate - how many people see your game & thumbnail, and how many actually click.
my numbers went up quite abit after some experimentation since yesterday and my popularity dropped by 3 ranks
click through rate, the proportion of people that saw your game in their searches and decided to click on it
i wonder why my game has so many downlaods tho ngl
the only data that gives this result is definitely the relationship between impression and views
so 3% ctr means that 3% of people that saw your game clicked on it
26 is a lot for a game with WebGL support
Generally, a low CTR means you need to improve your thumbnail, name, or something else.
true
yes
I mean that explains it haha
next year I definitely won't be making a Visual Novel though
based on the data collected, VN has a debuff on popularity
watch me make an mmo in 3 days
this year was a 2d roguelite because my art skillset was most developed in 2d pixel animation
There was that one multiplayer game last jam
"guys i'm making a evolution based dragon mmorpg" or whatever the meme was
neuro awake lets gooo
It was awesome, we had to team up in the jam channel to playtest it together
by next year i hope im competent enough at 3d modelling to speedrun making a 3d game in game jam hours
link
learn low poly modelling
for me i hope i get good enough to add the mechanics i was intending to add
fixed too
ive made 3d models before
im just slow
compared to 2d pixel animation where i can speedrun
oh my god im falling asleep but surely he is going to play more games today
This one
oh ye, i played toghether with yall
Its probably gonna be awhile before he gets ready to do content, go nap haha
i havent slept in like 30 hours
i dont think a "nap" is gonna cut it
Good times
I remember it fondly
same
Nap^2
4 mechanics i failed to add in the game jam
- ridable vehicles, empty vehicle, place a unit, it becomes yours, they can join platoons
- fog of war + vision
- platoon spawning (different units can form a platoon on a single tile)
ex. evil and 4 tankers can be placed on a single tile, they share all stats - decent enemy ai
You should sleep for 8 hours, let's be realistic, he said minecraft today iirc + the jam entries can be pretty long and tutel pops in later usually
Uh. I've gotten the neuro-ball stuck on top of the neuro-erm.
oh if hes playing minecraft then yeah
you can always watch the vod
gnight
gnight unmoon

Sleep well! 👋
I might be immagining it, but it feels like looking at the submission in a random order is influenced by the karma raking
Yeah just rewatched the vod and Vedal says: "We'll play more jam games at some point"
AKA never. Or tomorrow maybe
Like it feels like games at the top of karma are often also the top of random
maybe it was a coincidence tho
I think that's how itch jams work!
So the more entries you rate the more you get rewarded for it
Is this neuro ball?
Not really seeing that myself, the top 5 karma haven't shown up in the top 10 random in the 10 refreshes I just did
Ah I forgot to remove my link in reddit and I got alot of impressions that isn’t converting into plays, rip popularity
I mean then again hard to tell either way could be bad luck
yes
don't downloads and plays increase popularity?
I saw that mentioned on the karma stat but do we know how you get rewarded? it's not clearly stated from what I recall
Press Q to shake screen
Views/Impressions
I figured that one out once I found out ESC brings up the menu with a list of controls.
Yeah honestly no clue
I think it has some positive effect though
I’ll show you my data in a sec
thx
It was me and some friends. As for the popularity, it should not have been this high, that's for sure.
CTR is bigger better or lower better?
Bigger
4.5% ctr is huge, damn
Apparently, 1 percent is normal, 2 percent is good, 3 and above is great

these are ours
this was the comparison in the past 5 hours or so
ez, one promile better
this is my first game jam ever
the one with 11k impressions dropped 3 popularity rank
and in between I dropped 1 rank during 10k
Our updated stats: 615 views, 25 downloads, 347 browser plays, 14.3k impressions and 2.34 percent ctr
mine is bad for statistics then

oof
so the only thing I can tell is that if impressions go up way faster than plays/downloads/views (one or mix of all 3), you drop in popularity
same
which one was yours, again?
thinking of adding a red circle to the "thumbnail" image
you could always try to change the cover art and see if that helps
neurowars, the one with no sounds
I had 2 case studies to support it as well, but I really want the data from a few more people near my popularity rank to further narrow down, but right now I'm assuming popularity = impression/views
hey, the one with no sound is mine as well
Our popularity is holding steady at rank 15
ohh that was good one, first gamejam??
yep
cool
We are slowly but surely rising
what numbers changed from a few hours ago?
So I need more clickbait cover image lol
I'm rank 27 rating but 149 popularity
I think we need more purposeful marketing
and also genre
Views and impressions
Increased
were they somewhat proportional
do you have the data from before and after?
I sent screenshots before
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3212555
play and rank if you haven't yet!
The ctr is roughly the same
this one is quite promising
It increased by like .09 percent
CTR affecting popularity has already been ruled out
my Ctr went up by lik 0.8
and I still went down in popularity haha
imma promote it on reddit lol
no
promoting it on reddit dropped my popularity significantly
We also got some more browser plays
cause if it gets to the front page, you're getting impressions and no clicks
Our game can be played on a phone
which is in theory the leading reason my popularity dropped quite abit
weren't you like top 10 before?
our game could be played on phone if we had on screen WASD buttons
it does render on phone
nah my popularity was always low
to me it kinda feels like popularity is really more about ctr outside of the gamejam, so the games that appeal to the general itch.io community than the ones that get a lot of ratings for the jam
I'm 2nd most rated though
Ours could top if we had an enter button
*too
I'm gonna keep my post on reddit though, I prefer having more people just playing and enjoying the game than a popularity contest haha
I'm much better in most rated than popularity
Most likely you'll end up higher on the final ranking
yea but tutel isn't gonna see my game
but that's fine
I still remember the one team who decided to submit their game to tons of Game Jams, not even reading the rules of the GameJam
Especially given what we know of the kurtosis
where did you get this info from again? was it like a site someone posted here a couple of days ago or smth?
Yeah lemme get the site
Analyze your Itch.io Game Jam results and view jam statistics
big thanks
(Replace the id in the url with your own)
has anyone played Groggs Quest
i did, but yours had way better stats so i unreplaced it and will pretend these are my stats now
gotta up my coolness to be a chill guy
I think I did
My only good stat is my coolness
Basically have double the number of ratings as us lol
I'm about 10 place below in popularity though haha
Yea, but Vedal has like twelve days on the timer
havent voted much cuz i cant play, think i accidentally gave my self carpel tunnel for 64 hours of working on the game
Been playing so many games so my coolness and karma are super high (#2 in coolness last I checked), but everything else is around the middle of the pack

Oof that's rough buddy
NAME
grogg quest
We were there last year with neuroshock, know how it feels
tbf we were inexperienced with Unity, I think art and music was good tho
I've noticed commenting under other games is good for getting rating, imma review all the games in the gamejam rn lol
Always gotta have a WebGL build if you can also, gives a huge boost in ratings
yeup
imma be the coolest person ever
I think our game would be a solid A tier entry.
cool % speedrun
soon I'll be cooler B)
yeah i told cloudburst that we should but we didn't have time
we were scrambling to get a MVP out
Visual Novel debuff, its somewhat unpopular because people assume its going to be time consuming, so they either hold it off or just skip it entirely
Huh
with 280+ games to rate, most people will pass on things they think they can't get a full experience of above 20 minutes
So in theory, as time goes on people will play it more?
Well, our games views has been holding stable
Here it is, the 102 coolness one: https://itchanalytics.vercel.app/jam/neuro/3213340
Honestly I might just do it weirdly but I've been selecting my games randomly
all the "good" visual novels are kinda in the middle of the pack
Our game is a strategy combat game inspired by Medabots, so that's probably why we are ranking pretty high
I don't really consider how long they might be
oh we sharing stats? here's mine
only thing is that I'm holding off on downloadable games so that i can go through them all at once in the itchio app
I've been mainly grinding out the least rated for web, gotta give some attention to some others apart from the top ones
oh mico, can I have your views and impression analytics?
I still have a whole list to go through before I can rate smaller games
is that previous gamejam?
Huh, you're kinda right. Evil in time, webphishing, keepsakes, neuro-sama are all around the same spots
nope, this one
yep
where do I see that
data suggests that VNs getting a debuff
here
basically its just how the algorithm works
this link, but with your own rate number
only the team leader's ratings affect the game's karma right?
thanks!
because I've rated stuff and our karma is -1
Only the team leader can give ratings, so yeah
Is neuro64 good
that explains a lot, we were going to meet to rate as a team
64 downloads from a webgl build is insane btw
I thought only the submitter could rate? Did it change?
the outliers in popularity are from low impressions and higher plays
I guess people were curious to try downloading the rom to play on emulator or hardware
by rate I also mean comment, oops
Ohhh, ok
so if only 1k people see them and they have like good views/plays etc, they score higher
basically proven by a few experiments today where I promoted it in places where I get impressions and not views/plays, which dropped my ranking by 3
Literally everyone else: Congrats On Participating!
Me:
and the second correlation is that I kept sharing one of the outliers, and it probably got a bunch of impressions, and it dropped quite abit in popularity
so basically if you don't have a WebGL version, you are essentially fucked
Ohhh, just realised which is Vedal's submission
because people aren't going to put in as much effort to download the game
Well there's the download but there's also the risk
well, alex game was well received and its download only
kinda ye, but most game-engines support making a webGL build so i dont see why you wouldnt make one in general
Alex game has the Alex buff
the one with the lowest karma
no webgl definitely hurts, but there are quite a few projects that gets pass that
Besides, the game is honestly good too
I'll play & rate your game in a few hours later today!
In popularity. the final ranking is a whole other story
If your game is download only, you gotta make sure it's good enough for people to want to go through the effort of setting up a VM (or trusting you) and downloading it
we were scrambling to get a mvp out in time
It's top of my list
The most popular game might not win the jam, only the ratings matter for that
I still have a list of games I have to go through from people that played and commented on my game, but after that idm playing a bunch of lower rated stuff from anyone too
popular game wins tutel's heart
We got the game functional in the last day, and added content also in the same day (art, music, writing)
for us webgl was the only option, with the game being made in python and all.
making an exe version would require more effort
fair x)
I want this to go up in popularity
https://itch.io/jam/neuro/rate/3213193
-2.405
This needs to be on stream lmao
Though I'm afraid the ship is ruined after yesterday's stream
Added to the list of games to play 😄
you HAVE to play this
but what was the experience level of your community/team
