My first custom script, centered around Spy/Recluse misregistration (and specifically, how that interacts with Math/Juggler/Empath/FT). Looking for thoughts from experienced scriptbuilders to see what I can improve!

v0.1 thoughts:

  • A quiet minion line is essential to keep Goblin/Marionette paranoia up (especially in smaller games), but I worry I've made them too weak in the process, especially with the TB big three + Juggler, Magician, and Philo on script. Would adding Poisoner (maybe over Mez) be too much on a script where all the Demons inflict poison already?

  • I'm not too happy with the Outsider lineup: PM didn't feel right (hence Drunk), and I originally had Acrobat over Lunatic (though a 2 death night hard confirmed it, hence the swap).

  • Undertaker/Marionette is a bit of an ehh interaction, but I like both enough to where I don't want to drop either of them. Dropping Mario entirely and adding a 4th Demon comes to mind, but I'm not sure what that would be (none of these minions play very well with Vigor, for instance). Swapping UT for Cannibal feels bad (and misses out on the fun of the Spy/Recluse/UT interaction).

  • Bonus one I forgot! A kill sunk = pukka game 90% of the time. Monk felt too strong and Goon felt like too much droison, would love to know people’s thoughts

Poisoner + pukka means that theres a chance someone gets double poisoning, wasting the posioner (reducing its power level). having poisoner as an option helps disguise no dashi. If youre not too hapy about outsiders, get rid of baron imo (since youre just adding in more of something you dont like as much

I think the demons are a little odd here? I know Lleech has a whole host of issues but I actually think it works perfectly fine on this script, I have always been anti ND+Drunk, but the real issue is demon has no real way to sink a kill aside from Sailor, so it'll probably be pretty obvious it's a Pukka game the second it misses a kill

Mez and Politician can be a little much sometimes without SoI

But otherwise I actually really like the misregistration vibe and the townsfolk on this script in general, though Sailor might be a little tough, if the Sailor ever survives an execution they're confirmed good if they literally ever die which may or may not be an issue dependent on how the town+evil treats them

This looks like a well-made script! I love the Lunatic support here, there's a lot of options for confounding them. I'm assuming you're using Sentinel and SoI here.

The only quibble I have is with Amnesiac, it kinda sticks out as the only role that needs to visit the ST, and it's more suited to high-info scripts like Catfishing imo.

I also think FT might be a bit strong here. The demon is completely immobile, so if they get caught early in FT ping there's little the evil team can do. Direct demon detection like FT and FG work best with demons that can move, just like TB and S&V.

I'm not sure Sailor works super well here? It kinda feels like to just here to give Lleech a bluff, but I don't think Lleech needs that.

Also quite like this script! A few notes:
-I am extremely not a fan of drunk + Marionette, and I agree that drunk + no Dashii is somewhat questionable. I also would replace sailor with something else, since the Lleech doesn't super need cover on this script

No Fabled here (I’m not convinced a Mez turn AND a Poli flip happens often enough to warrant SoI).

I’m a little worried Good might not have enough to solve the Demon specifically without a FT? Maybe Exorcist over FT (also handily solves the pukka sink problem) but even that might be too strong

Noted about Amne and Sailor. I kinda like Sailor for giving Math more things to ping off of, but if it doesn’t work it doesn’t work.

It depends on whether the ST will have the recluse misregister for the sake of savant info. Doing so is, to be frank and IMHO, not very fun for anyone involved

Also, re: Drunk + ND, Baron without a Drunk makes it hard for evil to bluff Outsider roles consistently from my experience (since all of these Outsiders, minus Drunk, are pretty public). I’m aware it’s a bad interaction but not sure what to do with it (Mutant is self confirmable, Damsel/PD out when they die)

sentinal + GF isnt bad because you can get a cool range of outsider counts, but its your preference. Also adding in more sources of misinformation isnt horrible since the script is already good-sided

Eh, IMO sentinel godfather makes outsider tracking near impossible and is pretty brutal for the good team. I don’t love sentinel in general unless the script is very good favored, but especially with godfather.

Amnesiac --> Fisherman

As previously mentioned, it felt out of place amidst roles like Empath, UT, and Juggler: what would a good Amnesiac ability on this script even look like?

In its place is Fisherman, where the ST can decide what the good team needs in the moment instead of at setup (while also providing a very strong evil bluff and a devastating consequence if droisoned).

Fortune Teller --> Exorcist

While I liked having the Trouble Brewing "big 3" inforoles, several people pointed out FT felt too strong against an immobile demon.

There was also a problem pointed out that's endemic to every script with a Pukka on it: if the Pukka poisons someone who gets executed the following day, nobody dies that night, and it's immediately obvious that it's a Pukka game.

The way I thought of to try and solve both problems was with the Exorcist. It explains why a kill gets missed at night, and the interaction with Pukka is way better than it is for, say, Monk (who gets double the chance to save the Pukka's target) or Innkeeper (whose droison might further confuse the info on this script amidst the already-prevalent misinformation).

I wonder if this still might be too strong. Does the Good team even need a Demon-finder on this script? Only playtesting will tell.

Sailor --> Chef

This one's an odd one. I liked Sailor when theorycrafting for two reasons: (1) it gave the Lleech a reason to survive execution and (2) it provided more droison for the Math to track. However, with the Spy, Recluse, and the Demons' poison, Sailor became an Outsider on this script, which sucks.

In its place is the Chef, a character that interacts with Spy/Recluse quite nicely, as it shares a home script. Did someone say more misregistration?

Drunk --> Mutant

Running out of characters so:

Drunk + No Dashii bad.

Mutant + No Dashii better, since Mutant is still somewhat hidden.

Self-confirming Mutant OK since there's an Undertaker anyway.

I think Pukka might not work here? I think the it's the biggest problem and the Exorcist solve is a little in inelegant, because I think the issue is you need decent death prevention so the Pukka whiff isn't obvious but stuff like Exorcist is more consistent than a Pukka miss

I also think Cannibal instead of UT for Mutant purposes is funi but it doesn't work as well with the script's misregistration vibe

I also agree that Shugenja in addition to Chef might be a little much

Do people like ND+Mario? I'm not really a fan but I'm not sure how popular of an opinion that is

But I do seriously love 90% of this script, it's really just one or two things that are kinda iffy but in its current state I genuinely think it's already playable

Soldier I'm... not sure about. To take another custom as an example, Mabel's Silent Night Speedy Night also had a Soldier on it to mask Pukka deaths, and it ended up just not working out

ND, Lleech, and Pukka all provide sources of poison, Imp doesn’t and I don’t think an evil team with an Imp lasts long against a soberhealthy town

I don’t think Pukka needs to be replaced here, it works and I like the theme of all poison demons.
Really, it just needs the good team to be tweaked a little bit and it’ll work great, Exorcist -> Farmer would do wonders I think

  • A chef 0 almost always deconfirms Marionette (the exception being recluse marionette which is... an interaction, I guess?), which I'm not the biggest fan of.

  • I got that same comment about amnesiac in the initial script, so swapped it for fisherman (mentioned why in the changelog, so won't redo it). I personally don't see a massive problem with the Fisherman being the only consulting role, like the interactions Fisherman has with the rest of the script, and feel like another each night(*) role (e.g. general, high_priestess) might make town way too strong (considering the very quiet minions).

  • I like the Drunk (and initially had it on script), but people pointed out no_dashii drunk as a bad interaction (since it can be untraceable for a good team compared to no_dashii marionette, which is still on the script), hence the swap to Mutant. I don't see politician + mezepheles_mephit as enough of a problem to "fix" by removing either of them.

  • Yeah, it's clear exorcist against a static demon without other explanations for 0 kills is way too strong (and outed lleech + exorcist is a feels bad). I'll probably swap it for soldier?

Chef —> Steward

Chef/Marionette is a weird interaction I really don’t like (a Chef 0 basically deconfirms a Marionette). Steward is a role that provides confirmation over an evil ping (though the Spy can still mess with it!)

Fisherman —> General

After some thought I’ve realized being the only role to consult the ST kind of sucks? I might change it back since I do like the pixie-fish interaction, but I’ll do that after playtesting.

In its place is General (to be run as 5-star). It’s a strong inforole that similarly allows the ST to tell Good if they’re on the right track.

Exorcist —> Soldier

Looking back, I was way too hasty in adding Exorcist. It’s way too strong and sucks with an outed Lleech.

In its place is Soldier, which isn’t as strong. It has a lot of things to bluff as to hide in non-Spy games, and the Pukka isn’t immediately outed if a kill is sunk (since it could be a the Demon hitting the Soldier).

Before I start: huge thanks to Seeker for suggesting both of these!

Mutant --> Puzzlemaster

I mentioned not liking the outsider line at the start, and Mutant felt like a bit of a band-aid over the drunk no_dashii interaction to help evil bluff Baron worlds. I personally dislike self-confirming Mutants, too, so I'm not too pressed about dropping it.

On the other hand, I absolutely love the Puzzlemaster. Since a Mutant will eventually explode at some point (making their hidden-ness eventually come out), a Puzzlemaster creates more drunkenness for the good team (more things for a Mathematician to track 👀) and is very bluffable by evil.

Philosopher --> Knight

It feels like Philo should always go Magician on this script as is. While it's a really nice evil bluff and I like having philodrunkenness to track, it didn't seem fun to play for anyone, really.

Knight is something I was going to add in place of Steward, but felt like it was too strong. Now that Philo's gone I feel much more comfortable adding it to this script. It's strong info and a good Pixie target!

I wouldn't say philo is bad otherwise, but there is a lack of extremely strong and 'fun' roles for a philo to go, so a greedy philo who wants to playchaotically will be heavily incentivized to go politician

Wondering what roles feel essential/expendable from Axo's perspective... One of Baron/ND should probably go, but I'm not sure which she likes better. Alternatively, I wonder if there's any way to justify this absolutely cursed interaction... Maybe some roles that are louder about when they're droisoned? Acrobat in place of Poli, is something that comes to mind, but I'm still thinking

Honestly worldbuilding with the possibility of a No Dashii is tough on this script, it's so fluid it can be plopped down almost anywhere, and with a couple evil players it can be really really hard to get any sort of bearing. I know I gripe a lot about ND+Mario, but I think No Dashii might just be really really strong here by itself? Especially paired with Puzzlemaster, it makes worldbuilding wildly fluid. I'd have to play more with this script to get more of a feel for it, but the issue is that I really love No Dashii here themeatically and I think PM+Mario+Baron play well with the other minions, there's not a solid replacement for ND, but ND is just strong 😅

Actually now that I think about it, ND+Baron is guaranteed to add PM on some player counts and likely to add it at others, so ND+Baron is most likely putting the town at -5 TF 🤢

Thoughts: (Take all of these with a pound of salt! I'm still fairly new to clocktower, and extremely new to script building!)

  • Swap puzzlemaster for drunk. There's been a good point about how puzzlemaster is an outsider and the game shouldn't be easily solvable, but personally, the puzzlemaster mini-game isn't fun with so many other droisoning sources on the script, and it feels more punishing than usual
  • Swap out one of politician or mezepheles_mephit. Two additional evils feels like too much to consider, and really glued up worldbuilding for good later on in the latest game, I feel. Maybe Sprit of Ivory would help? But calling in a whole-ass fabled just to deal with this feels like a bit much. Better to patch up the problem early on the script side, I think.
  • Swap steward with washerwoman or librarian. With all the droisoning on script, I think there's some benefit to pings that are easier to sus out as droisoned. The last game felt very slippery because all worlds worked with how flexible the droisoning was, and how difficult it was to detect. Plus, I think it's more interesting how outsider pings like politician and drunk still do good work when librarian is droisoned because it discredits the pings, whereas drunk steward just kinda gets the ping and sits on it.
  • Swap slayer for virgin. Slayer is high-stress and less fun than Virgin, I feel. Plus, it's a more "noticable droison," and I think it allows for more of that Miss Registration the script is supposed to be about!
  • Swap marionette with cerenovus. Honestly? I just hate marionette 😆. Could also be a baron swap?

Yeah Steward is, at it's very best, not very strong. Librarian would be really solid, even Washerwoman would work since we have Spy here
I do think Mez+Poli is a little much, not because there's an overwhelming number of evil players but simply because there's a lot of players who are playing against town's best interest, and SoI+Poli is really feelsbad
Idk how I feel about Cerenovus, could be neato? I really like the quiet minion approach though and I think that'd be better for this script
And the Drunk/Mario/PM discussion is mostly informed by what ends up happening with No Dashii 😅

How do people feel about mathematician here? I can get the impulse to put mathematician on script when there's so much droisoning going around, but honestly I think there's so little info on script that mathematician doesn't really have a lot to check against, and there's so much droisoning that mathematician runs a large risk of being bad itself! I have personal bias against mathematician because I find the info so hard to work with, and the lunatic interaction rubs me the wrong way, so maybe it's just that? People mentioned fortuneteller though, and I think that mathematician would swap nicely for that...

  • WW is never going on the script with Pixie. Librarian maybe, but it still feels way too strong considering that Baron is supposed to be relatively quiet here.
  • Slayer is on the script to help good figure out who the real Goblin is and who the real Demon is. Not swapping it out.
  • Marionette is a key part of the script’s identity. Not swapping it out, and definitely not for Cerenovus who is loud as hell

When you say "quiet minions," do you mean "minions who aren't easily confirmed through visible game effects?" For example, Witch would be "loud" because a nom death is open and instant, and Cerenovus is "loud" because players will see the "you are mad as X" thing, but Goblin is "quiet" because you can't confirm that until exe, and maybe Godfather might swing either way depending on how much extra death is on script?

What would you say are the "core roles" on this script? Things that you would never swap out for fear of losing its identity?recluse and spy you mention on the top, and there's marionette too... I think you're going for a bit of a poisoned ping thing with puzzlemaster, no_dashii, pukka, lleech, with mathematician to round that out. goblin you mentioned to figure stuff out, and slayer to balance the goblin... anything I'm missing?

And as a related question, what roles would you look at first when considering a swap? The bottom listers that you're using mostly to fill out slots and don't feel like really fit here.

What about bounty_hunter ? Probably swap off mezepheles_mephit and politician to accommodate the extra evil, but I think it's a much needed source of continuous information in addition to a YSK, and bounty_hunter with this much droisoning (or as an evil bluff) has the potential to be a beautiful trainwreck.

I hesitate to say this because it's played so poorly in every game I've seen it in, but monk? I've heard that the interaction with pukka is complete garbage, but I think people wouldn't fault you for using the bootlegger to deal with that, and "safe from the Demon" is important when Demons are the primary source of Droisoning. Fun for the same reason soldier is fun with these demons, I think.

If you really like quiet minions, why not take things up to the max and throw in engineer hatter as a pair? You mentioned that slayer is important because it lets good distinguish between Demon and goblin, and I think engineer fills a similar role by allowing Good to get rid of the goblin entirely! Then, hatter might bring them back, or an executed evil might claim to be hatter that brought all the Goblins back! Very devious, and since the minions are all quiet, it'll be even harder to trace!

in terms of TF: mathematician, undertaker, juggler are all very core to the identity of the script. In a tier below are general slayer soldier: I'd rather not swap them out but ehh, I guess?
Outsiders: recluse because it's on theme and works well with the TF and the Spy. Also politician, but mainly to the extent of it hiding Baron. lunatic is fun on this script too.
Minions: spy, goblin , marionette (Baron too, but mainly because there aren't better outsider mod characters)
Demons: probably just the pukka tbh. I like the outed evil Lleech dynamic but it's not integral. Lack of Demon mobility is core to this script though (hence why I really don't want to add an imp or fang_gu)

BH bounty_hunter was on a very very old version of this script (before I made the post, I think) and the problem I had with it was just how centralizing it felt. And if Baron stays on, then so does Poli, and BH + poli is just upsetting

Monk monk isn't going to be on the script while Pukka is - the interaction is just horrendous. I've considered Innkeeper but probably not that either

Hatter hatter-Pukka is bleh, so probably not that. Engineer engineer just makes Baron/Marionette on this script and completely neuters evil team, so probably not on this script (though I like the idea)

Boomdandy boomdandy AND Goblin on the same script feels like overkill? They basically do the same job as each other, just that good can still win after the Boomdandy explodes

The two main issues I've noticed on this script:

  • Mezepheles is super oppressive when worldbuilding, even when not in play. +2 people potentially playing for evil proved too much, even when only one of them might actually turn

  • No Dashii is incredibly strong here, definitely a step above the other demons, but having it confirmed Pukka if nobody is outed Lleech feels bad.

    • ND + Baron is also just a whole mess, especially on player counts where it adds a Puzzlemaster, essentially being -5 Townsfolk

  • I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that drawing the Soldier token = (almost) free ride to f3. It's super strong but also super easy for evil to bluff with little cost (if it's a doubleclaim, cool, you execute the Soldier you wanted dead anyway)

  • Puzzlemaster being the only consult role sucks and was part of the reason I removed Fisherman (though adding it in isn't too hard?)

Current idea... IDK what to call this? A "sub-bag"? There are "packages" in some card games (Hearthstone for me) of cards that interact with each other mechanically, and this is kind of what I'm thinking of. Anyways:

"Extra Death Package": empath , steward , and magician come out. empath because bad interaction with no_dashii, steward because low power, and magician because I felt like we needed more info. If pukka is the star of our show, I think a few characters to vary the death count help out a bit, and maybe "miss attribution-of-cause-of-death" is Miss Register's cousin or something? gossip is up first and foremost, for the extra info, and innkeeper follows to give Good a way to avoid killing themselves too quickly. With another source of drunkness on the board, puzzlemaster comes out to make way for acrobat, which is another source of potential death but also indicates droisoning, which I think is important to make the no_dashii baron situation less oppressive. assassin is now quiet enough to replace mezepheles_mephit with all the extra deaths, and oracle is up as another strong info role to help Good sus out if any minions have been exed, and maybe reward a cheeky Minion Night kill from Evil.

It's hard to narrow down but if I had to try:

  • misregistration (recluse spy and its shenanigans with steward pixie shugenja empath mathematician undertaker juggler ravenkeeper)
  • slippery minion line (you can never fully rule out goblin marionette mezepheles_mephit)
    • to this end, having baron on the script somewhat necessitates a shifty outsider count and the politician (and, in previous versions, drunk mutant)
  • immobile demon that can spread some misinformation on its own, since the minions aren't as disruptive as some of the louder stuff (poisoner, cerenovus, devils_advocate... anything that goes with a vigor, really)

Current problem I'm thinking about:

Core of the script is "Demon sourced Misinfo + hard to identify minions." vortox is off the script because knight, which leaves us with exactly pukka lleech no_dashii as our demons. One is a bit more OP than the others, but two is too easy to check between, so we go with all three

Current critical minions are spy marionette goblin, plus baron for outsider mod. The only other minion with outsider mod is godfather, and that doesn't fit here without some additional death, so let's put that aside for now. Since politician needs to stay, mezepheles_mephit needs to go, and that leaves us with one more slot. With poisoner off the table (for good reasons), the only "untraceable" official TPI minions left in are mastermind and boomdandy. Maybe this script could just leave the 8th evil slot blank and go with 3 demons 4 minions?

Regardless of what's picked here, this script has, for now, locked itself into baron as the only plausible Minion with outsider mod, and that creates the extremely cursed scenario of no_dashii baron regardless of what other choices are made.

My instinct--and I will admit that that this might be a misguided instinct, formed by TB and my own bad ideas of what should and should not be the goal of the script--is that, even with the worst possible set up on a script, there should be towns that stand some mechanical chance of narrowing the worlds. no_dashii baron requires 3 TF to be able to, if not solve, significantly narrow, and also I don't think there's 3 TF that can do that in all of clocktower, let alone on this script, especially with 2 droisoned, 3 evils, 3 outsiders, and 1 poli running around spreading additional misinfo. (Barring extremely lucky snipes from artist or seamstress, or extremely broken savant info, I guess)

Now that I mention it, maybe some of the more powerful roles from SnV might be what's needed to balance out no_dashii? magician steward empath can be gone as a few lower priority roles, and savant fisherman artist come in as a little "consultation package." It shifts town towards the info heavy side, but savant and fisherman info can be weakened by the ST to account for different bags, and I feel like this sort of ST side flexibility is extremely useful on such a script where the variance of Evil Power is so high.

After the first real playtest of this script in #1195464826898620597 I realized a couple of pressing problems with the script. This update's a big one: here are the changes that are coming with this version.

Mezepheles --> ∅

The potential to have two extra players playing for evil (a mez-turned player and a Politician) proved to be too much. I didn't think it was too powerful until actually playing the script, and I suspect with 3-minion games it would be even harder to manage. I couldn't find a quiet Minion I liked to replace it, so it's just popping off the script.

Steward & Pixie --> Washerwoman & Virgin

I'm talking about these two changes together because they do much the same thing: help solidify the confirmation on this script while giving Spy some more shenanigans to pull. Steward and Pixie could already misregister off Spy, but this isn't always obvious or even detrimental, and these Townsfolk are quite weak when it comes to confirming players. To put it as Jarhed did, Steward at its best is not very strong. Pixie causing doubleclaims felt off to me, and wasn't really what I was going for.

Washerwoman over Pixie is strong confirmation, especially for easily-bluffed characters like Knight, Slayer, or Ravenkeeper, and has the upside of not causing good players to doubleclaim each other (we already have Ravenkeeper and Politician). Virgin plays a similar role as it does on TB: there's plenty of YSKs that want to kill itself on the Virgin, and a couple characters that might do it late-game to prove themselves (Empath, General, UT).

Both of these characters interact beautifully with the Spy, sharing a home script with it and all. Spy can nullify a Washerwoman's ability and create false confirmation with the Virgin via misregistration (both things a Mathematician can pick up on and yell about later), and even without a Spy these are interesting (if difficult) evil bluffs.

Alright, here's the big change:

No Dashii --> Po

No Dashii, Baron, and Puzzlemaster does not a good combination make. With base 2 outsiders, the Baron is forced to add a Puzzlemaster, essentially making the evil team have [-5 Townsfolk]: much, MUCH too strong. This was the case in #1195464826898620597, where the General and Magician were the only sober Townsfolk: with a Spy in play, those were all gone by Night 3.

But why the Po? It came from the same place that Lleech does: providing a unique kind of misinformation while risking outing yourself if you're not careful. In this case, the Po's brand of misinformation isn't poisoning, but murder. It can emulate a Pukka or Lleech just fine, but if/when it ramps up its kill rate, Townsfolk can start dropping like flies. However, do this too early and the good team can rule out Pukka and Lleech, which is huge: outside of a Drunk, all the other information is sober. It's like how it is in Andrew Nathenson's Church of Spies.

This comes with the bonus of helping out the Pukka and Lleech the other way around: in F6/F5, good team will start getting Po-paranoid: maybe a sunk kill can sell that world for them and cause them to misexecute?

I'll admit that this is a little bit of an experiment, and somewhat unconventional. I want a third Demon on the script that can pretend to be the other two, since having solo Pukka or Pukka/Lleech as the demon lineup doesn't really appeal to me. Who knows — maybe Baron's the issue here and not No Dashii.

Puzzlemaster --> Drunk

PM being the only consulting character on the script sucked, and the reason Drunk wasn't here was because the No Dashii had a pretty bad interaction with it. Now, with Drunk and Politician, Baron has the potential to be truly silent at all player counts, which is a strong buff for evil, but something I don't think is unbearable. As a bonus: fun interaction with Lleech and Mathematician.

Soldier --> Monk

I'll admit I didn't really want to remove the Soldier, but it felt like the best Townsfolk to remove. Playing the Soldier is very social on this script: unless you're the Drunk, evil team can't get rid of you. Drawing the token will get you to the final day, barring getting yourself executed to avoid people tunneling on you as the Demon. Good needs some kind of play to counter the Po outing itself instantly and getting 1.5 kills a night, though, and I think the Monk is the answer to that, while also providing a clue as to whether or not it's a spy game and giving the Po a reason why a charge might've happened. It's not a perfect fix — 2 kills after a charge is still pretty bad — but it helps level the playing field if the Monk is savvy about how they bluff.

But isn't the interaction between Monk and Pukka bad? Absolutely. I wish I didn't have to, but this seemed like the best way to reconcile Po on the script as a replacement for No Dashii (another immobile Demon that might out itself, but can blend in somewhat easily with the other Demons). Think of this like balancing out the Ravenkeeper/Pukka interaction.

You've certainly considered this, but I'm curious to hear your take on MM, especially now that Po is on? Feels like the MM day is exactly the sort of misregister that plays nice with Po charging, but if the vibes are off I respect that 👍

My one concern is that Po getting 3 kills every other night isn't quite balanced enough against its lack of misinfo? Like Po charges then kills 3 on N3, it's immediately obvious which demon it is, but evil doesn't care and Po just rips through town quick enough for it not to matter? With Drunk + Mario + misreg there's still a little misinfo

I would absolutely love to see how it plays out in action, but my fear is that the drawback for the Po isn't nearly as bad as it appears 😅 I would absolutely playtest it before switching out the Po tho, I really do want to see this in action before jumping to any conclusions

PLAYTEST 2 REVIEW

__Okay, what was the grim like? __

As with the last game, a very strong evil team was put in, sort of giving a trial-by-fire to the new addition Po po, along with Spy spy and Marionette marionette (who saw the Washerwoman washerwoman token).

Outsiders: Drunk drunk (who saw the Juggler juggler token) and Recluse recluse, one hidden and one public. Gave evil the flexibility to bluff another one (Poli in this case, though I bet the game would've gone similarly with a Lunatic bluff) to hide the Drunk (which worked exceedingly well).

TF: knight mathematician empath undertaker slayer virgin ravenkeeper. RK is useless in a spy game but the rest are pretty powerful unhampered

How did the game go?

I didn't follow too closely, but:

  • Recluse nommed the Virgin (who later got UT confirmed) and didn't come out with being an Outsider, causing a tunnel
  • Math pinged off Recluse-Marionette (good) which framed the RK after the Empath died in the night (suspecting Pukka, so away the RK goes)
  • UT claims Goblin for two days, making them the frame
  • Spy claims Poli and the Drunk Juggler goes undercover, making the Demon's General bluff sail to the endgame without suspicion (despite the wonky info)

Good played alright, even though the first two days were rough, and once the Po charged they (somewhat understandably) tunneled on the good Goblin claim (even after the Slayer shot them).

What did I learn about the script?

  • This is a very social script, with info being relatively low. Good did a good job but couldn't mech solve (success!)
  • Monk doesn't need to be on the script. Soldier does its job just fine, and I preferred its dynamic anyway.
  • Somewhat counter to the last point: A Kazali seems like a ton of fun on this script. It'd require removing the Baron (since a Kazali never makes one) and the Soldier I'm planning to put back (sad!), but using it as a third demon that obscures the outsider count seems like just the ticket.
  • Untraceable drunk sucks and I preferred when PM was on the script but it might be too destructive for such a low-info good team

I see a couple paths I might go down:

keep the po

-Monk +Soldier (they protect the same amount of people each night, why did I change this)

either -Drunk +PM or -Politician +Goon, maybe both (traceability + making Baron less powerful, since silence is super deadly)

possibly -Magician for an inforole like Savant or Fisherman?

drop the po for a kazali

-Po +Kazali (heck yeah)

-Baron +something? Still lost on this one. (Poisoner seems too strong, Boomdandy's doubling up with Goblin, SW provides mobility I'd rather not give, Summoner is interesting but don't know enough about the character to confidently put it on, and others are too loud or obviously bad)

kazali and summoner have a jinx, kazali cannot make a summoner, and there really wouldn’t be a reason for a summoner to make a kazali either. if you’re avoiding baron and poisoner there’s not many options left for quiet minions. i don’t think scarlet woman would be too strong if that’s what you’re worried about, plus it’s the only way a jump could happen

First live voice playtest happened today! Some highlights:

  • Pukka sniped the Monk and UT n1 and n2
  • General got thumb sideways, slightly down, and fully down but the good team got the demon on D3 due to a juggler-confirmed empath
  • the Spy bluffed Shugenja pointing at the whole evil team (that helped with the demon snipe)
  • Pukka'd UT saw the Knight as the Poli and he just ran with it, fun times
  • Poli put the Goblin on the block D2 then just played for good the rest of the game

I'm very happy with how this script is working out live; people had a ton of fun and it felt really balanced!

This reconfirmed a couple of the big points to me: socials matter a ton on this script and the Politician is a ton of fun. Mechanically worlds were very open but socials allowed good to narrow on the solve, which is something I'm very happy with.

Planned v0.5.1 changes:

Monk --> Soldier

They protect the same amount of people at night. The Soldier being untouchable and pseudo-Stormcaught is something I find a lot of fun; the evil team has to work to frame them making Soldier very powerful. It also plays a bit nicer with Pukka while still having utility in Lleech and Po (while Monk feels overtuned in Pukka, pretty balanced in Lleech and a bit weak in Po.

Yeah, when I think high info I think roles like Savant, Dreamer, and Balloonist, and having the good team be almost entirely info gathering roles.

This script has info, sure, but there’s several townsfolk that don’t provide direct info like Monk, Virgin, and Magician, so I’d say this leans more on the social side

A couple more playtests of v0.5 have happened since last time! I've only changed one character here, so I didn't feel it warranted being v0.6.

Monk --> Soldier

To be honest, I'm not sure why I changed this to begin with. The writeup I had in v0.4 --> v0.5 was, to put it informally, a whole lot of yap and not much actual reasoning. Since the last couple playtests, I've come to the conclusion that the Soldier just fits this script better.

The Monk and Soldier protect the same number of people each night. Monk is begging to be bluffed by a Po who just charged, and otherwise feels a little too strong against Pukka. Meanwhile, the Soldier must be framed on this script to be dealt with - outside of being the Drunk or Marionette, there's no way for evil to get rid of it (no Poisoner, unlike TB). It'll be up to the good team to either trust the Soldier player until final day, or execute them via Virgin or normal means to eliminate the possibility of evil bluffing the character. On a more social script like this, Soldier feels like it makes more sense over the Monk.

Popping back in for a quick addendum!

If you’re running this script, consider using the following Bootlegger rules:

Spy + Marionette + Magician: When the Spy sees the grimoire, the "Is the Marionette" reminder token is removed, too.

Doing this makes it less trivial for the Spy to figure out which player is the real Demon. If you're going to run either of these rules, this is the one I would consider most strongly.

Virgin + Lleech: The Lleech host does not register as a Townsfolk to the Virgin.

Doing this prevents the D1 rerack when the Lleech host gets themselves Virgin-executed (killing the Lleech in the process). It’s not strictly necessary since the game would just rerack pretty quickly after, but in an in-person setting or other time where reracks are annoying or impossible, you may want to consider using this to keep the game going.

  • dreamer feels like it fits the theme super well, is a strong inforole, and can help narrow Goblins which is great for the good team
    • BUT it might step on the toes of Washerwoman a little bit in how it can get confirmations with people by walking up to them and coldcalling their role. are the two distinct enough in play pattern? It also might swing too hard toward good
  • alsaahir is another world-razor that's super interesting here since it ruling out worlds is genuinely a very useful trait even when it doesn't straight-up win
    • BUT it kinda dunks on Lleech if it becomes an outed Demon while also being an invisible host which might be unfun (notably, this is also true of slayer, so might not actually be terrible)

  • General often does just become a budget Oracle here, also its very hard to detect a poisoned general and i've played 2 games where a lleech-hosted general was "confirmed not host" because they let their info make sense

The misinfo is quite fun, watch out for dreamer mario tho its quite strong for good
I think Alsaahir would actually go crazy here, I would add it (offers another incentive for lleech not to get outted)

  • dreamer/marionette seems fine? for every real marionette they see you can also show marionette as the fake evil role on someone with two good neighbors. Marionette (Dreamer) also goes kinda crazy especially with poli and drunk on the script
  • General out for alsaahir feels a little odd because slayer/alsa on the same script has weird vibes - maybe it goes hard tho

I actually had the HP on a beta version of 0.5, but ended up dropping it. After some consideration (and also learning how to ST HP good and not bad) I think it fits way better than General; there are so many social aspects to pick up on here that a HP excels at finding and rooting out. The General felt like a budget Oracle at times, and didn't really have the nuance to pick up on what was important in a meaningful manner most of the time.

Slayer --> Alsaahir

Slayer overlapped with Knight in a way I wasn't particularly like? If it doesn't win, it's half a Knight ping you can target - very useful, but not exactly the most fun thing, especially since if you hold it too late you die at night. Alsaahir is a similar character that really thrives here from the immobile evil team and especially likes Lleeches getting outed - it's super fun to play here and eliminate worlds with, since it also helps good answer the "goblin or demon" question like Slayer did by eliminating the worlds one by one.

I'm really happy with how this script works right now! Everything fits together nicely and the theme is cohesive and fun. The one thing I really want to test is how this feels at 3-minion: I'm excited to see how that goes. Either way — very satisfied with the state this script is in!

D2/N2 - thePineapple pukka poisoned and sent to Zeminus, the Mario who learns a correct '1' on Eliott (Alsaahir ✅ ) and Julian (Shugenja ❌). Rikytan Virgin exed under a Shugenja claim.

D3/N3 - Moon pukka picked. Math 2 (Virgin proc+Undertaker proc on Spy). Good cannot build the math number. Already suspected pukka, so players suspect on Zem+Eliott+Richard world with Zem supporting Elliot. Zeminus convinces Eliott to claim Goblin, and claims Goblin himself. Richard exed.

D4/N4 - Sponge picked. Richard seen as a Politcian. Math 1. Eliott executed.

D5 - Zeminus self noms, claims Goblin, gets executed. Evil wins.

The spy doesn't register as "good to talk to," but the HP gets pointed to the Spy anyways because ST is trying to indicate a minion that is lying. Good team takes it as a sign that this is a player with good information. Game ends with 3 evils alive.

my favorite bag of this i ever did was giving the drunk knight true info (one of which being their neighbor) and putting a virgin in as knight as the only YSK

knight failed to proc virgin and town spent the a solid few days tunneling on the knight pings and then once they were all dead, i think they sussed the virgin

played a game of this, ended D2 with a goblin win but funny moments:

  • recluse claimed po, marionetted the UT,
  • recluse told the UT to claim recluse so that the real recluse could marionette the politician
  • the politician, being a silly politician boy, told the demon they were their marionette
  • the real demon told the real mario (who saw shug) they were the mario (also begged them to claim soldier since the shugenja infompointed toward the lleech host)
  • the goblin told the math they were the mario, which the math genuinely believed in the grim reveal until the game result was announced
