So, what I'm thinking is, Albrecht is using the atomic bombing of Hoellvania as a sort of "quantum bogosort", where by the time the new year rolls around, and Wally can visit, it's too late to stop the bomb, so the only timeline where he reaches 2000 is one where the bomb was stopped or smth.

And Albrecht won't cooperate with us unless we have a way to make him feel safe from Wally

Of course, in principle, I don't see why we couldn't just go someplace underground that's somewhat sheltered, and isn't right under where the bomb's going to be dropped, but I don't think that would be a particularly pleasant outcome, just a survivable one...

... and Albrecht would do his darnedest to make that as difficult and unpleasant as possible.

Ok so wild theory right before 1999 drops: The Man in the Wall’s goal in 1999 is to take over the Infestation.

We know the Infested fear the Void and also the “Rap. Tap. Tap.” that comes from the Heart of Deimos. 1999 is “The Plague Year”. He might be taking advantage of a Y2K-esque virus which is why in Whispers he seemingly wins when the clock hits 00:00, 1/1/2000 and we’re too late to stop him.

After that, the Infested get more powerful which causes another country to nuke Hollvania. This starts the Radiation Wars, countries dispute, and reform, and eventually the Orokin as we know are formed— which then ultimately leads to Albrecht discovering Man in the Wall, then the deal on the Zariman, etc.

Albrecht is trying to stop him in 1999 so he can’t exist in the Origin system— but even if we help him stop Hollvania from being nuked, it probably won’t stop MITW from existing because he exists beyond rational spacetime.
