Real Talk, I saw this logo on a truck today while I was driving and I was like.....gross? I really don't want to know what kind of lubricants they make..... What do you guys think of their logo? lol...maybe I don't want to know....

Many machines need lubrications or the gears over heat from friction and the machines wind up needing repairs. On the design, I think it’s easily readable which is important since it’s on the side of a truck and is assumed to be only viewable for a moment while driving down the road. The colors are also eye catching and related to USA. So that’s good. The font is sightly italic giving just a little flair and charm to the design. And there’s only one little star as an accent to the piece, leaving the main focus on the brand name and not on any illustrative aspect of the design. I think this is great 😃

I knew how to do focus stacking, but not the statistics tool that Jesus showed. There's always another tool.

@tranquil marsh Wacom also makes Point-of-Sale name-signing dongles for cash registers. They work really well, much better than the ones in US. (I know people in EU usually use chip-and-PIN, but at least in US & JP signing is still done.) This is off-topic, I know. I just love how companies use their expertise in one area to do things in another.

Fantasy topic for discussion. Now I may be reading too much into this, but I'm doing a piece for Mer-May and I'm discovering that the mermaid as a creature is widely anatomically incorrect. Mshallaq .. I don’t think I would have retouched that photo at all. That face has beautiful character. By removing all the lines and wrinkles, all that character is gone. It looks too plastic. You did a great job in mimicking skin texture, but I don’t think that was necessary here. The most I would have done is maybe lighten up a couple of the deeper creases .. but still not remove them completely. But honestly, I don’t think I would have even done that.

It’s a great photo as is.

I’ve really been struggling with using a mouse to do these challenges, especially after watching Val whiz through the work with her Wacom... So this morning I had an epiphany and got out my digital studio I built while we were living in a small apartment in San Jose! It’s based on a Surface Pro and wireless keyboard and Trackman, all fit on a lap desk. I had forgotten how nice it is to work from the living room couch while watching tutorials on the TV. Hopefully I’ll get caught up now!

Really having fun with making my own background layers! Val's comment on re-using the Guardians was inspiring and I have been working on BG's of many layers in different brushes then seeing how they respond to blend modes. When I get a good look I can save that one as a PNG and use Bridge to drop it into my Libraries. The original is set back to normal modes and saved as a PSD for later. Loving Kyle Webster's crosshatch collection!

@half brook Stranger Things is a Netflix series. Set in 1983/84, in Midwest USA. Strong Dungeons & Dragons theme, with an alternate universe “bleeding through” to our world. The alternate universe is called “the upside down.” Highly recommended, at least season 1

The typeface in the logo recalls a “create your own adventure “ series of books from that time. There is huge attention to detail in the series, with lots of period props. Whoever did props & costuming did a great job.

@sterile stirrup cool illustration! I love the ground and the layers create depth with the diff. Values. Could maybe be a third lighter value even further. The stars only up at the top are nice but look a bit generic as do the clouds when compared to the land masses. And silhouettes on the ground like two diff styles. The sky vs. the ground so as a whole I think it creates an issue. I think around the flying horse it maybe cool to add some light spilling onto the body. Like it’s maybe too clean and sharp edged to be real. Not sure how clear that was. Land is very detailed sky is less so. So it prevents the composition as a whole from being fully unified I think. Each is nice but together is a problem

@half brook Here's what I think about it.. followers don't really matter to me, I have actually never uploaded something to Instagram, Facebook etc. But as a creator I could understand that followers matter, because if you have more followers you have a bigger audience and that means that you have a bigger change to get hired for a job.

@plain iris Hi. Not sure if it’s too late for this or not. But there’s really only a few options if you can’t do the effect (is it an option to do it at a lower resolution?). 1. Instead of the filter, draw the images and or effects in a similar way using diff brush combinations etc.. 2. Convince them it’s a bad idea if you really think it is and not just because your computer can’t do it. Be honest with yourself. Could be a bad idea if you think they really won’t change their minds. They may just think you’re not listening to them. 3. Go to computer cafe or a friends or something and use a different computer. Maybe best option. 4. Use the rented computer do the filter. Then do what you think they should do if you don’t agree with the oil paint filter effect and show them both ?

I am very familiar with photoshop but I'd like to get better. How have you become "pros" at photoshop? Also illustrator is new for me and I'm struggling to learn how to use it, any advice?

Photoshop has layers... as does Illustrator but every thing in Illustrator stays separate even if you dont use layers and are infinitely scalable and won't get pixelated.

Play around with illustrator with the pen tool, boolean operators (merging/subtracting vectors) and get a feel for what is possible.

Generally speaking photo editing, compositions, painting, effect heavy websites (gradients, effects) are done in Photoshop. Illustrator is good for flat illustrations, logo design and "flat styled" websites/UIs but it's always been clunky for web/UI stuff for me.

@vague grotto I would suggest you get the best one you can afford without stressing yourself out about it. I also would try and go to a reputable local computer shop if you go PC. Rather than a big box store. Try to get 16 gb ram. An ssd and a normal hard drive to store images video etc. video card I’m not so sure how necessary they are but will help with certain things and others not so much.

Have multiple Surface Pro devices (mostly have upgraded to latest generations, although not 6) hooked up to twin 1920x1080monitors.
PCs have all been maxed out 16 GB ram, 512gb+SD+ 8TB Backup storage, core i7, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640, Surface pen with nibs, Surface dial, etc.
But with wanting to do more creatively since personally subscribing to Adobe CC, acquiring a real Desktop graphics, 3D and video production behemoth I'm wondering what to get. Need capable graphics card and storage, MORE RAM, multiple CPU workhorses, power, speed, connectivity. At work, I retired from, had a Lenovo monster with 20 display port connections, yet only one middling monitor (they were more impressed with the PC price). Object to now stay busy at liesure. Branch out. Start a new career/avocation. Spread the wings. So what are your dream systems?

Hi @bright steppe the starter file is a frame for you to put your posters, like a mockup. So at the end of the challenge you'll have 9 posters 😄
