I agreed to, so we sat down and he would explain the steps he wanted me to do, and every time I would "why do we do that step?",

You could try to use Content-Aware Fill to fill in the empty portions of the image but results will vary. And then you'd have to hand-paint to fix the mistakes. Not saying that it can't be done but it would just require some digital painting experience. Much easier to make your own new composite. And the results will probably be better.

It's not really hard to copy, but if you're really really lazy you can use illustrator's image-trace function and then tweak it as you want

So you have the source art in vector format. It seems legit to me unless you were expecting something else from them.

Not perfect but well, I did it for free so no complaints allowed lol

Doesn't hold up to great scrutiny because, well, there's this very fine texture applied to the image, that makes it almost impossible to get it to look right without just recreating it from scratch. I've done my best without having to recreate the image, but you'd be better off redrawing it in an app like Adobe Illustrator if it's actually important to have a fine asset for it.

Ended up creating selections via the pen tool, and then using either a fill or a gradient to replace the gap. This means some of the areas I've fixed are a bit too smooth, and don't have the texture it originally had. But that's if you're pixel peeping though.

Depending on how large your image is, the regular blur button is quite weak

If you zoom in, you might see it is working, but it's only blurring it slightly

I very rarely use the regular blur option because I find it's not very useful

I'm sure it does have a use, but I find being able to much more easily change the strength is more helpful.
