Thanks for your feedback @bleak fossil and mentioning the brushed area! I didn't notice it while I was working on it. I think I might erase it😅

Challenge #6, never used displace filter before, was quite fun to learn it, but still had to use brushes to apply shadows as the image turns out a bit flat after application :/ I wonder if that depends on how textured the original displace image is(the one you have to turn in greyscale)?
Thanks a lot Sam! I did not expected it turns out like this good. Many thanks to all hosts, they are doing great job and inspiring us.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
I also didn't really understand what's the point of horizontal/vertical scale in the display filter application box? Every time you increase it more than 0 the pattern distorts and goes outside the edges of the object you applying it to 🧐
Challenge #06: Place patterns. I used here Ps legacy shapes for patterns. The left one I have already used in previous challenge this year.

Challenge #7. Vintage Painting.
Placing Patterns Challenge from yesterday
that's a highly cool looking pattern placement @umbral perch
anyone for a Gerbera Strat floral Pattern??
your flowers came out very crisp lookinig @rigid wolf
DCC 5 & 6. Chocolate Chip Chair. I created a Chocolate Chip pattern. However, I couldn't figure out how to inverse the colors. Perhaps I need to try Vanilla Chips on a brown Chair. I really worked to get the shadows correct. I hope I'm close. This was a fun experience. Thank you for this opportunity!
oh, this is our chair in the living room that I put the pattern over. 😄
Challenge #07: Vintage Painting. The action suggested by VooDoo worked very well. I used same colors but on urban city image. For vintage look used texture image and blended. Then added a short poem from haiku generator, so I added circle with a footprint to make additional decoration.
😄
Challenge 6: Placing Patterns
@jagged granite This is looking great, I like the color grading! The high key contrast and color toning definitely adds to that aged look, nicely done!
@copper moss Looking good! The texture and faded contrast give it a really strong aged look while still having a clear read. I like the added text and graphics, though I wonder if overlaying a slight texture on them could help them look a bit more aged as well, since they currently have a clean, semi-futuristic look, unless that's what you're going for of course. Nice work!
@tropic knoll Very nice! I love how you incorporated 3 different chocolate chip elements, hah. The pattern masking and application on the chair is looking good. My only suggestion with the shadows is they look a bit opaque, I always use a multiply layer for a more realistic look where you can still see the details of the surface underneath. It might also help to give the chair a slight boost in brightness with a levels or curves adjustment to make it fit the lighting of the room a bit more. Well done!
@vague shuttle This is a super cool idea for the pattern! I really like the addition of the flowers to the bottom left to frame the design. The pattern came out very well with the uniform lighting and saturation, and the application to the guitar looks really natural. Nice work!
@keen grove Awesome pattern! Is this an illustrated pattern you used or did you create it? The yellow/purple color scheme works really well and the application onto the curtains looks really convincing. Well done!
@umbral perch Very interesting style to this image! The color creates a strong mood, and the texture makes for a really interesting look. Kind of like tactile, hard layers of paint. Looks good 👍
@swift marten Nice composition to this image! The text has a really cool effect too. I assume the background is the element most heavily affected by these effects? I really like all the shapes and texture in the background, but how it's still not overpowering the character. Nice job!
@dusky swallow That vintage challenge turned out so well! The color grading and contrast really nailed that look and appears authentic. Nicely done!
@ripe quest Nice pattern! It also has a nice, convincing look applied to the couch. My only tiny nitpick is there's a small space between the two pillows at the top that could be masked out, but that's super minor. Looks good!
@brisk flower Hah, very nice! I like all the elements you added in this one, the perspective on the rug looks good. Really cool style to the wallpaper pattern, though I wonder if lowering the contrast, opacity, or saturation a touch might give it a more subdued, realistic look. Nice job putting all these different elements together!
Thanks, Sam! You have sharp eyes! Yes, indeed I arrange the decoration and type above the texture, because they seem not noticeable. I will try to fix them look vintage.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
Hi, Sam! I returned type and graphic to vintage look. That is for Challenge #07: Vintage painting. Here added brightness, because of footprints and text to be seen.
challenge#5
Same image for Challenge #07. Type and deco are under texture layer (BM darker color). And also Pin Light looks good. I am not sure which one has more vintage look now. Here brightness toggled off.

PsDCC5 Challenge #6 5-4-2021 Placing Patterns
@bleak fossil Oh man, I wish I could take credit for creating that pattern but no. It’s just something that came across my Facebook feed last week. Upon further investigation I have discovered that it was created by an incredible artist named Jordan Piantedosi. And this pattern is currently available as a dress, top, leggings, and a silk scarf. She is also in process of making the print available to buy as raw material so making these curtains will actually be possible one day. Her IG handle is jordanpiantedosi and website is jordanpiantedosi.com
@bleak fossil Ps DCC 2021-05 05 Floral Backdrop
Why do I get that sharp diagonal line when I rotate my pattern?
Also, when I was making my repeating pattern, this kind of thing kept happening, where my image was deleted at the edges of the tile. Why? (I shrank the layer to show the issue better.)
Should I be posting this in ask-a-question? Sorry if so.
I kinda lost the plot on vintage, but its the first time I got Actions to obey me.

DCC Day 8,Parallax
Challenge #08: Animated Portrait. I did this portrait in previous Ps challenge this year. I integrated eyes, dress, jewelry and changed skin color and added BG. This is first time I use frame animation. I am not sure if it turned out good. The aspect ratio is not good here. How to fix? To play download.
Challenge 1
Day 4 Custom Texture. This is my custom texture made from two custom textures. Plus one of Val's watercolor textures. I wonder how it will look on a couch! What do you think of it? How might it be improved?
oops. Sorry that's Tilable Pattern. Hehe. Not exactly a golden goblet, is it??
it doesn't play
for challenge #07
Hi, Fery! I remember you. I tested myself it plays. You just download it and then open in you machine. Your plays here. I am using old version of Ps. I have your parallax with your girlfriend on my machine.
ooookay...I see @copper moss
@copper moss There should be a way to get it to play within Discord like you see with some of the other designs, though I'd have to check out what settings might affect that. Nice job on the animation by the way, I like the eye roll, hah. Looks good!
@hushed spade I like it! I like the softness and how it almost fades into abstraction while still being clearly floral. I could picture this being used for stationary or something similar. As far as improvement I think it really just depends on your intent with it, subtle patterns might work better on a wall, while more bold patterns might work well on a couch. Looks good!
@dusky wave I like the stylization of this image! It has an interesting graphic look to it. The framing mockup is a nice touch as well!
@storm ridge Loving the texture in this design! The ring's texture really helps push that metal look and feel and adds some nice interest. The strong contrast gives it an eye catching look and sells the metallic look. The wooden background texture adds some great context to the image as well, nicely done!
@lucid plover Cool use of the animation challenge! It's always nice to see some life breathed into a 2D image with animated backgrounds. The only thing that really catches my eye is the masking on the hair in between the two fingers seems to have a really sharp edge which looks a bit off. Perhaps cleaning/softening the masking in that area might help. Nice work!
Thank you @bleak fossil
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
Challenge 2
@eternal mica Niice, I like how far you went with all the different patterns and elements in this Day 6 design! Really nice use of your other challenges as framed background images. My main suggestions would be to make sure the houseplant layers are on top of the layers of the black frames around the art on the wall. Also it might help to play around with some different blending modes on the couch pattern so we can still get the lighting information from the couch for a more realistic look. Nice job!
@tacit condor Really great color contrast on this design to make the goblet pop! I really like the style of everything too, you have some great use of graphic shapes but also got some nice depth with the gradients and shadows. I especially like the pattern on the goblet and background. Really nice visual balance to this design!
@brisk flower Ooh, wasn't expecting the red glow, nice addition! The eye movement and animation is looking solid, nice work and cool background patterns 👍
DCC Day 8 Revised
@ripe quest Cool idea! The stylized filter looks good and the black background really helps the colors pop. The mockup looks good too!
Thanks! Maybe I’ll try to embolden it for the couch challenge.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@bleak fossil Thanks for your critique Sam. I used a blending mode on the plants to hide some of the BG between the leaves. I didn't have the time to mask. I didnt notice that the frames also came through. My bad. I tried all sorts of BM on the couch. I even went back to increase the contrast in the displacement file. I couldnt get a much more defined couch. I'll keep trying.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
Thank you Sam! I am using older version of Ps. Could it be Quicktime mess I heard in the Internet that it is not supported any more - I do not know or narrow configuration settings? By the way I forgot to ask: if it is GIF animation which file I will discord? I did one it did not work-> came only html-code in screen.

Challenge#3-motionblur
i am new here ... what the challenge here ?
look in #📣creative-challenges to see the challenges
@wind sandal Welcome in! You can find all the challenges here https://www.behance.net/challenge/photoshop
@ripe quest Cool idea! The stylized filter looks good and the black background really helps the colors pop. The mockup looks good too!
@storm ridge Challenge 2 looks good! It seems to match the perspective and lighting of the scene quite nicely, and the shadow underneath the couch helps sell the effect. I do wonder if the lighting side of the couch on the right might be a bit warmer due to the warmth of the lighting coming through the window, but that's a very minor nitpick and hard to say without seeing it. Well done!
@brisk bone Really cool pattern! The bold colors really make the couch pop against the more subdued colors of the room and the pattern application is looking good. Nice job!
@arctic rover Hah, that's great to hear, actions can be a bit tricky at first for sure. The overlapping shapes and collaging of images has a really interesting look to it. Nicely done!
@paper shadow Nice job with the glow effect, the light rays are looking really good too! It might help to give the dense doorway glow a more gradual fade off, but that just depends what you're going for. The little dusk specs look good too!
@dusky swallow Very nice, the design came out very well! The animation is looking good, the movement is nice and smooth. It could be nice to see the portrait a little larger within the frame even if that means cropping the long bits of the head dress, but that's just personal preference. Nice work!
@timid pier Really cool idea for this animation! It makes for a really interesting effect and the animation as well as the mockup came out nicely. 👍
@hushed spade These types of questions are probably best in the #❓ask-a-question channel since they can get flooded in this one. When do they get cut off, is this after you've arranged them with Pattern Preview? Or are you no longer having an issue with this?
Challenge 7: Vintage Filters with floral patterns
@brave hatch Wow, you went all out on this one! So many animated elements give this a lot of action. The sudden zoom in and out as well as the grainy film textures give it an uneasy, sort of creepy feel. Did you use After Effects or Premiere for parts of this? Awesome work!
@eternal mica This style is looking neat! Almost has a sort of etched look to it, and the monochromatic sepia tone definitely gives it an aged look. If you really wanted to push the vintage feel a slight texture across the whole thing could be a welcome touch. Nice job!
Well I used photoshop to break down the image and then I put them in After Effects to animate the eyes and head, to scale in and out, to shake the image, and add the film overlay

PsDCC5 Challenge #7 Vintage Painting
Wow! It turned out really great. Love the animation of your portrait and the zoom, wiggle and glitch effects add a great touch. Awesome!
Nice job of applying texture/pattern on the mug. Addition of lights and shadows on it gives a realistic feeling of depth. My only suggestion would be to try to match reflection of the mug on the table. Nicely done!
I know what you mean, but I spent so much time trying to mask those sticks that I got attached and couldn´t get rid of them, I have to say that I wasn´t 100% satisfied with the result, I may have to look at it again with fresh eyes. Thank you for the suggestion . 😇

@dusky wave what, in your opinion, could I do differently to improve your experience during the challenges
I am open to any and all constructive critique!
you should enable as you said earlier in the DCC you would use hot keys., also try not to pack to much into 25 mins fo the stream. Keep the introduction to uaround 5 minutes.
Another great series of challenges! I particularly enjoyed Day 8: Animated Portrait... I felt like it allowed me to employ many of the skills I've been learning while also taking on something radically new (to me). Thank you, @jolly quest for your instruction and enthusiasm! And thank you @bleak fossil for additional feedback and also the extra work you put in to illustrate some of your points; it was very helpful to learn from your recommendations for others as well as my own attempts.

Challenge day 4: I drew basic shapes, used a part of a coloring page for the king and used some textures that I have in my stash.
@bleak fossil Ps DCC 2021-05 08 Animated Portrait I had to lower the quality from HIGH to MED to bring down the file size. I dont think it will impact this exercise.
Got it! Finding a reliable software for hot keys was a little difficult but I now have the ability to actually display my hot keys on the screen. I think that on top of me saying them, having a visual representation will really help. I can also experiment with having the Mac alternatives displayed on screen so I don’t show only the pc commands and just mention the Mac keys. I realize that not everyone uses a pc to design and I want to make sure that my challenges are helpful for all. I will also ensure going forward that the introduction stage, like looking at the challenge landing page, are clear and not rushed but also don’t drag on. perhaps that will free up time so the class itself doesn’t feel as if a bunch of things are crammed into a small amount of time. Despite the shortening of the intro, I will still work to condense the concepts into fewer steps so that the challenge has more room to breath within the timeframe.
Thank you so much for your feedback and specific concerns! This will help me to present the best experiences I can!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @dusky wave
@dusky wave Im not sure how many DCC series you have been part of. I remember when I started, I could not make sense out of much of what the leader was demonstrating. I had to watch the video a few seconds at a time. Stick with it. You will get the hang of it, and you find a comfortable rhythm for yourself to follow along. If you get stuck on a particular step, ask for help in this tab or better yet, in the ask a question tab. As to the PC/MAC dilemma, SHIFT is the same in both systems. ALT (PC) = OPTION (MAC) ; CTRL (PC) = CMMD (MAC). I assure you, your persistence will be rewarded.

challenge #7
Really enjoying these challenges and seeing what everyone comes up with. PS is such powerful software and seems so overwhelming but this is really helping me understand it so much better!
Also regarding the cosplay pictures, @jolly quest what character are you?
@dusky wave I have a different problem with the shortcuts , not all will work on my keyboard, I have a Nordic keyboard, then I need more than 3 keys for execute there you use 1- 2 keys, the shortcut will not work for me no matter what of Adobe program I use. Example [ , ] to get this two I need following sequence Ctrl+Alt+[ or ] and tilde ~ , it will not work and this shortcut can I not find in Adobes shortcut list "but hyphen". So then anyone say use tilde , will I get stuck.
I have on tip for you use Subtitles then you replay that help a lot, and age have nothing to do this dilemma I'm self 65 + , here can you see the standard shortcut list for PC vs Mac https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html

Thanks, @eternal mica, I went back an forth with making the door knocker the main subject by cropping-in or just having it as one element in the entire scene to show a “medieval” type of scene.

LOL @eternal mica.
Hi, here challenge 1
Challenge 2
Challenge 3
I am not convinced but it's ok for me, here my challenge 4
And as always feedback and advices are welcome
@limber thistle These designs are all looking really solid! The door glowing effect looks great and the light rays and particles turned out really well. Very cool texture on the goblet design as well. My main suggestions would be adding a bit more shadow on Challenge 2 to give them some more depth, but the perspective is looking really good. I also think a bit more shadow on the undersides of the Challenge 1 ring, and even a cast shadow on the wall behind it could add some nice dimension to it. Very nice work!
@hollow silo Great style to this Challenge 7 design! The stylized, aged look and monochromatic coloration works really well. I really like the glare/reflections you added on the painting to give it that glass cover look. Nice job!
@compact pecan Very cool idea to give this challenge some context in a scene like this! It does have a bit of stone look to it, but my main suggestion is that the knocker could use more contrast, specifically in the dark tones, it almost appears slightly transparent or something at the moment. You can see how the deep darks in the skull eye and nose is lighter than the dark tones in the door handles to the left. The key to getting that metal look is to have a strong contrast between the dark and light tones, and often times the highlights appear fairly "suddenly" without a long, gradual gradation between the lights and darks. You can kind of see what I mean in these example pictures. Nice job!
@eternal mica Very cool to see you using a previous design for this animation challenge! The frame mockup and blue background make for some nice contrast in this design. The animation and eye movement are looking really solid, my only suggestion would be that I can see the iris showing outside of the eye/overlapping the eyelids. I'm not sure how your layers are set up, but you could avoid this by having the portrait on the top layer, the iris under that layer, and the white of the eyes on the bottom, if that makes sense. Nicely done!
@bleak fossil haha, you spotted my earlier neural filter exercise!! Thanks for the tip. I'll look at my layer sequencing and get it set up as you suggested.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
Does this look a little more like you’re suggesting? BTW - I am on my iPad without access to my iMac, but I think I still got it.
@eternal mica I cropped it just for you ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️. 😜
@compact pecan I think Sam's comment was far more valuable than mine in improving the image. The zoom helped and the contrast was really a dramatic improvement. Nice job.

challenge #9!
This is what i did for the challenge of the 3D effects
Day 5 - Floral backdrop
Day 6 - Apply pattern
This is the pattern - a combination of a floral motive and some of the previous pattern made in the past challenges
Day 2: Perspective Transform. The stock images I used are included at the top.
That’s a very powerful image, @eternal mica. I like that you have one prominent candle while the smaller ones have a little transparency to help them blend in. I wonder if having a little contrast between the candles and the map may help a little? The flames catch my attention but the candles seem to get lost a little (just a thought). I think your warped text looks great - have you thought about brick-spacing the words?
You really added some nice bright spots and some additional color which really sell the metal effect!
You’re absolutely correct that changing and correcting perspective is a challenge, but even if everything else in a composite is good, having something in the image with the wrong perspective will make be obvious it’s a composite image. I think you did a great job to match perspective here - i would just suggest increasing the contrast between highlight and shadow on the bench to help match the more drastic shadows of the overall image. Great job!
Challenge 9
@compact pecan Thank you for your comments. I'll play with both ideas you suggest.

eyballed animation experiment
You’re right, @eternal mica - it’s definitely an Ai thing, and I’m not sure PS has that easy of an option. To stay strictly in PS, you could make one text layer, duplicate it and shift the positioning, then duplicate those layers and mask out the areas outside the flame. I just thought having some offset would make the text and the flame look more balanced.
You are very welcome @astral stump Your image looks great and the shadowing just “finishes” the effect. Keep at it - there are a lot of us here who started knowing very little about PS and the PSDCCs really help to learn quickly.
@compact pecan i appreciate that, but I did want to stay within Ps. Thats why I applied a wave to the text. I may make a personal copy of the image. If I do, i'll try to use the brick in Ai and then see if I can apply a wave to that. Thanks so much for your comments

my 2nd attempt for PS DCC #09
took another step I believe same effect but with muliple layers
Day 3: Glow Effect.
Not very good with brushes but more practise will make perfect, thank you for the challenge
I think you’ve got the shadowing technique working - your goblet has the rounded effect like Val was explaining. I think you may just need to adjust your brush size for the areas that need more precise edits. Either that, or you could use the brush on a layer that is clipped to the layer with the goblet and then none of your brush marks will “bleed over”
Really cool idea! I think the “Masterclass” edition would be to have the whole eyeball move with the pupil. A bit more work to pull that off!

challenge#04#custom textures
Challenge #8. I really liked the challenge I just didn't like the animated part lol. I love putting other pictures into frames and adding filters so that's what I did.
This is my first post here. I hope I'm doing this right. Challenge #1.
I think you did a great job with the texture and the highlights - you really made a convincing 3D shape! My only suggestion would be to edit the shadow on the polygon so it matches the rest of the shadows; a little darker and some blur. I don’t think there is a “right” or “wrong” way to do any of the challenges - if you’re happy with the end result, then you did it correctly!

My project: Magic Mansion https://www.behance.net/gallery/118403251/Magic-Mansion?tracking_source=for_you_feed_user_published
I think your door knocker looks pretty good. I think maybe the sharp lines on the highlights could be a little softer and add some shadows underneath - then it will look less like an illustration. I like the door background and how it adds a lot of additional interest to the overall image.
@compact pecan thanks I'll give that a try !
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @compact pecan
Thanks very much, Hugh! I'll go back in and adjust that shadow.

challenge 06
challenge#07#vintage picture
I really like the edits you did on this one. The colors make it look kind of bronze - nice job!
I've edited the shadows and also brightened the elipse a bit by adding a gold color overlay.
Ooh, I really like the gold! This is really looking great - your shadows match up very well and overall it’s a very convincing illustration. Nice job!! 👍🏼
Thanks for the advice, Hugh! Doing these challenges has me learning a lot already!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @compact pecan
It’s great to hear you are learning a lot. Keep at it - the challenges always have something new to learn!
Last time, I forgot the shadows, so here my challenge 1 modified
Here my challenge 5, first the pattern
then with background painting
and last I used it in a mockup
Here my challenge 6 with the retro pattern created on previous challenge with voodoo val
Here my second version with the white roses pattern
Here my challenge 7 with retro pattern
And the "white roses" pattern
And I used it on a mockup
Hello! everyone. Warp text challenge
Additional Project challenge
@limber thistle your “retro couch” looks really good - I like how you referred back to one of Val’s last challenges to make a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” pattern. Nicely done!
Last time, I forgot the shadows, so here my challenge 2 modified
Here challenge 9
Here my challenge 8 my last, I couldn't upload my mp4 on discours, so here the image
challenge#08#animated portrait
Day 5: Floral Backdrop. Instead of using a texture on top like Val did, I used the same pattern on top of each other three times and used different opacity levels and different blending modes.
Day 6: Placing Patterns. I used my pattern from Day 5.
original image
Day 7: Vintage Painting. I think it looks a little more like a modern art piece. I used "rough pastels" and "ocean ripple" filters from the filter gallery on my Day 5 floral background to make the painting.
Day 9: Warped Type. The words are the lyrics to "Light My Fire" by The Doors.
Day 8: Animated Portrait.
My perspective challenge
playing along with Jesús Ramirez tutorials!
Very cool work, @candid cape! The distorted text really adds a cool movement to the scene, the only suggestion I have would be to darken the background a touch so the fire glow might be able to stand out a little more. Excellent work with the animated portrait, the colors and the animation worked out great!
Great job, @vague swift! The typography matches the context of the poster really nice and I like that that the whole composition has a strong sense of hierarchy, especially with the light on the subject's face, avoiding it to look flat and blended with the background. Nicely done!
Why is the challange locked
Its 24th of may already
Or is it just me, plz help
Hey @spiral marten try refreshing the page, it should make it appear 🙂
Day 1 : Photoshop Basics Challenge
I am having issues with the starter file. This is all I get, how do I get just the image so I can begin the challenge?
Hi @young karma those are just the instructions, you can turn off the visibility of the instructions group by clicking on that eye icon under the layer's panel 😉
Oh wow! I understand now. They give you the whole psd and you simply turn off everything else. Fabulous!
You’re a beast @bleak fossil. So easy to follow
@bleak fossil Great day 1! Way to go, Sam. I really enjoyed it! PRO!
Thanks everyone! I appreciate that, glad to hear it was easy to follow, was hoping it wasn't too rushed, hah.
Very calm with great info. Loved it!
@bleak fossil i like your mustache
@young karma Very nice! I love the sense of perspective, it really helps fit it in with the scene. The way you submerged the text in the water is a great touch as well. Did you use the Ripple filter for the text reflection? Looks good!
@bleak fossil thanks ! yes i did use . Am i disqualified ?😆
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@young karma Hah, not at all, it's a good effect for this challenge!
@young karma The starter files are just that, starting points. They are merely broad brush instructions, and suggestions for images we can use to develop our concepts. Many times there will be instruction layers, images, groups with imbedded layers. You can pick and choose what you want to use. As @coral stone pointed out, just click on the eyeball icon to expose or hide any/all layers.
@eternal mica Thank you, just getting into the adobe ecosystem. I appreciate the help.

@winter token Welcome in. We're happy to have you. Its an awesome safe space to learn, create, make friends from all over the world. If there's anything we can do to assist you, please feel free to ask. We look forward to seeing your posts. Have you been to the Behance page yet? Thats where you can create portfolios and spread your work even more widely. Im sure Sam will be discussing that as we move forward in the DCC.
Here is Day 1 of @bleak fossil's DCC: Penguin of Destiny!
Thank you for the welcome! I usually watch the live streams on behance, but have never migrated to the discord. Finally decided to commit. I have been learning from the faulkner/chavez classroom in a book series for photoshop.
@eternal mica ^
Quick question, is there any limitation or rule or prohibition to the challange?
@spiral marten No limitations or rules other than to be respectful, courteous, family safe images.
@spiral marten family friendly language at all times. If you keep in mind everyone here is looking to learn, make friends, have fun, you wont go wrong.
@eternal mica roger that

Nice! I have some similarly edited photographs I’ve taken. I may borrow this idea.
@dense slate, that would be a great movie poster haha! I like the vibrant colors that you chose for the text, they make it stand out from the background very nicely. The penguin that you added is very well placed guiding the viewer's eyes straight to the text and adds a great context for the whole image. 😉
Hi @dusky wave! Very nice work with challenge 1! The overlaps are very on point. The only small nitpick on them would be to refine that small area around the D on the layer mask. You did a cool job managing the contrast of the dates. Well done!
@lucid plover excellent colors, Fery! I like the way you managed the perspective and added some overlaps between the word and the buildings while keeping the readability of the text. Great sense of contrast as well, the solid white fill avoids the composition to look busy making it very well balanced. 💯
Thank You @coral stone

This has been fun... One of my favorite all time classics
@marble umbra this is very nice! I like your font choice for the challenge, it gives that magical context that makes it match the title. Nice texture on the glow as well, also, did you use a blend mode for the text? It looks very nice and I like the way it helped adding contrast.
I did use a blend mode "Vivid Light" which added the contrast I wanted... Thank you
Thanks @coral stone !
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
focused mostly on the layer mask blending and getting the best perspective. I used all 3 images
Very job choosing the typeface and combining the images, @balmy badge! I like how the slanted text adds a cool movement to the scene and the way you repeated it subtly in the background. Also, the contrast is looking very spot on. Well done!
Lovely colors, @timid pier! Loved how the vibrant yellow tones from the text stand out really nicely against the background. You did a great job masking the foreground elements as well. This is just a personal preference, but you might lower the opacity of the reflections just a touch so the texture from the water surface might appear a little bit more through it. Keep it up!
D1
oops I forgot a layer, it's not necessarily prettier!
I like the new highlight, @timid pier! Adds a great light and reflection to the water surface 🙂
I dig these overlaps, @young karma ! I also like the way you positioned the words adding a cool reading flow to the texts and the way that the mask looks like a shadow on the base area of each letter. Great font choice as well! Keep it up!

YAY @eternal mica! It's amazing to be back! 💙
Really cool work, I like the contrast adjustments you made on the whole image, they enhance that sunset atmosphere. Very nice font choice as well, I like the glow and the way you made it stand out. Very well done!

i still have a problem with the lights ..😖 🤣
Playing with text, putting it into an environment. This is the best I can do for today. Thanks Sam!
No problem, Murielle haha! Lights and even shadows are always very tricky, one thing that helps me a lot is always finding some references that look similar to the effect I want, then use them to build my effect. Usually, a brush with a bright color, the selection tools, and some blend modes (Color Dodge, Screen, Linear Dodge (add) ) are everything that you need to build some great lighting effects. 🙂
It's been a while since I tried working with photos.
Was needing to make an in story event template for the HP site I help out with. Added a little relfection to the film image.
Great job! Love your different shooting angle on this challenge and the "Solarized" effect adds a nice touch! 👍
second trial.....
Lovely work, @dusky swallow! I like how you preserved the water surface among the reflections. The contrast is looking good and so are the colors. Well done!
@split pier Cool concept. I like the metallic text effect. Two points to think about, does the shape on the right wall enhance the overall image? Maybe try one version without it?? Is the lighting consistent with the shadows you created on the walls? Really good effort.
Hey everyone, I'm not really kind of proud of how I handle the focal point, BUT thanks a lot Sam, because I learnt so much today!
Challenge #01: Photoshop Basic.
Hello everyone, I haven't been here for a while.... This is my Day 1
@timid pier I really like your image 2. One suggestion, maybe add a drop shadow or stroke to the text to give it a more defined separation from the BG.
@copper moss Beautiful effort. Love the color palette and the way you shaded parts of the wings. The bird's body looks almost 3D. One suggestion, pick up on Sam's suggestion and give the text a bit of an outline/shadow/glow to make it contrast more with the BG.
@blissful wolf Welcome back. Happy to have you back in the groove.
DCC #1 with Sam Petterson. First submission and I am a total new-be in PS. Been planing to do PS DCC for a while so now is the time. Did take a while to find some thing but in the end I got it. Fun doing this.
Good work @vagrant rapids and you went all the way with it. Good job. I just submitted my first work in PS. Fun to start this one as-well. 🙂
Haven't played with working dimension quite like this...didn't quite get there today, but its a fun challenge.
Yes, I can see it @lost helm! So happy for you! Welcome in Ps! I'm not very old in Ps, but it's an incredible tool, I enjoy so much. You did great !!!!

@copper moss Nice tweaks. I think they helped the text quite a bit. I really like the saturation BM. It gave the bird a realistic coloring. Which do you like best?
I loved the colors that you used, @lost helm! The vibrant tones add great contrast to the background, especially when combined with the glow around. Great job with the reflection as well, I loved that it's subtle and doesn't make the image look busy. Nicely done!
Always great to see your works, Jude! You did a very cool job! I like the way that you played with the perspective and added a blurred shadow with some cool color gradient in the background. The contrast is looking very on point as well!
Thanks @coral stone I really appreciate your comment. Looking forward to take further step ahead in PS.

By the way: "Great 1st DCC stream @bleak fossil and so cool to see you back @coral stone !"
Starting File
Loving all these challenges everyone! Keep it up!
@hollow yarrow Really cool take on this challenge! I love how the bold shapes of the text stand out so well against all the little shapes of the cars in the scene. Great bold read to it, and really nice depth with the weaving of the text through the bridge. The contrast reads really well!
Thanks Sam!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@vague swift Me too! Really nice job with the overlapping shapes and toning down the foreground to really give the text the strongest color contrast. Looking good!
Whoops, almost forgot to post mine as well!
@paper shadow This turned out great! I really like the way it peeks out from behind the mountain. The masking on the trees is looking really good. If you wanted to tweak anything further I think masking out the reflection where it meets the trees a bit more could help. Nice work!
Thank you
@chilly granite Awesome, welcome on in! This is looking good, I really like the 3D look and sense of lighting on it. Perhaps a bit of a cast shadow in front of the text could really help fit it into the environment by selling that sense of back lighting that we're seeing in the scene? Nice job!
@timid pier Loving the strong complimentary color contrast is this! It really pops nicely. The splashing water is a great touch as well. 👍
@lost helm That's great to hear, welcome in! Excellent work with the clean masking of the landscape, and the fiery colors of the text give it some really nice contrast. Well done!
@hollow yarrow Such a fun piece. I love the blur effect. What are the fonts you used. Theyre both perfect for the image.
@lost helm Welcome to the DCC group and to the Discord chat. I hope you learn a lot and at the same time have a lot of fun. If you need help finding your way around, we're here to help.
@bleak fossil A question for you on @paper shadow post. What's your opinion on having almost the whole word "daily" masked out by the mountain? Is it ok in this context because we all know what it says? What would you suggest as a good rule of thumb on something like that?
It would even be better if i research an Font that would decrease the text to fit it all inside the artboard instead of hanging out what font would you suggest?
@paper shadow Im not sure I get your question. If you wanted to fit all of the text within the space in your image, just decrease the font size.
ok i will amend the text to be smaller font size, thank you again.
*Helvetica Neue (extended bold)] for "Try to find your"
*Battery Park for "Own Way"
@hollow yarrow Thanks. Im definitely adding them to my font library.

I love learning new things in Photoshop. Thank you for doing these challenges.
@eternal mica, Thanks for the feed back. I agree with the shape on the wall...., I was trying to balance the empty space on the wall, but I think the image will look better just by cropping the excess wall. I will also play with the lighting and shadows to make sure they are more consistent. Thanks again for the feed back!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
@eternal mica @paper shadow I suppose it depends on the purpose and context. We all know what it is because we're part of the challenges and that name is familiar, but if your audience won't know from similar context it's probably a good idea to make sure enough of the word is seen as to be able to tell what it says. So I guess you just have to keep in mind the goal, but in general I try to show enough that you can still tell what it says even with portions being obscured.
@neat venture @heavy ruin Both of these challenges are looking great! Very nice work on the masking and reflection, and both designs have a nice clear readability. Well done!
Thank you for a fun challenge!

I did it. More amazing, I figured out how to post it here!
@final monolith I loved how the subtle shading on the letters gave a 3D style to your composition! Great job managing the contrast making the fill of the text brighter than the background but still in the same context. The masking worked out nice as well! 🙂
Hey @frigid ridge! Nice photo! If you can, please give us some context about it 🙂
Loved what you did to emphasize the word travel, the glow in the background really goes well with the gradient fill. Playing with type on a path with the overlapping words was a great idea. Excellent typeface choice as well, it matches great the context of your image. Great job, my friend! 🙂
I loved the way you masked the sunset image, @heavy ruin! The clouds created an interesting texture for the fill of each letter. The overlaps and the mask worked out great as well. Nicely done!
Very interesting approach playing with the opacity, @neat venture! I loved the way that you made the text a little transparent but still visible and with contrast. Very nice typeface choice as well, what's the name of it? It looks great!
@ruby panther Ive been staring and staring at the image. I cant tell whats Boston and whats Northern Ireland. Really strong composite.
Thank you so much @hollow yarrow! 🙂
Day 1 looks amazing, the texture, the shading, and the way you blended each word into the scene even replicating some warm tones from the original image to the text, made it come together really great! I loved the overlaps between the trees and the bottom text. Awesome job!

🤣 I get those two mixed up all the time! Thanks!
I did not use a landscape photo - but here is my version on the challenge
Very nice approach, @cerulean marten! Loved the way that you played with the shape of an eye to emphasizing the message. The only small detail that I'd have would be to place the green/yellow image fill a little lower so it could fill the word if and the R from Clear, this way you'll add more contrast, (especially for the If to stand out against the white background). 😉 Well done!
Thank you - will definitely apply your inputs

I am confused the challenges on « monday » are the « welcome day » right ? 🤔
Hi @limber thistle! I believe that yesterday was day 1 because next Monday is a holiday in the US, so there won't be a stream on that day 🙂
Oh OK I am from France I didn't Know
No problem 🙂
@true scroll It's usually best to upload a JPEG file for the purposes of discord, that way a thumbnail shows automatically and people don't need to download it and open it to see.
@bleak fossil - sorry about that. Here's my first attempt via JPG 🙂
You are correct thanks for your guidance.
Very cool distortions, @true scroll! I loved that you made the texture of the water's surface appear through the reflection as well. The masking worked out nicely too. Well done!
@true scroll That looks great! I really like the way the text looks like it's not completely straight on with the camera, but as if the end of the word is closer to us than the beginning. Great sense of depth!
Thanks. It's Cubano Regular 72pt at 200% vertical scale.

@copper moss That happens to me quite often. Im not sure what causes it. I'll check to see if I can find an answer. My fix for it is to close the Discord tab in my browser and then reopen it. It always works fine (until it doesnt, hahaha).
Nice reading flow on the text, @void hornet! The contrast is very well managed and so is the blending. You did a great job selecting and masking the flowers while adding a sense of depth to the image. Very well done!
Did we ever name this creature? What should we call it?
Thanks for joining today everyone!
@final monolith Woo! Welcome in, glad you're joining us! This is looking good, nice job with the masking, the drop shadow/shape gives the text a nice bold read as well 👍
@limber thistle Awesome job with all of these, I especially like the floral backdrop challenge! The project came out really well.
Hello everyone! This is my first day in my first Behance challenge. (((comments are welcome)))
@sour pagoda Welcome in Iana. We're happy to have you join our DCC/Behance/Discord group. If you have any questions or need help getting acclimated, please feel free to ask. This a great program to learn , enhance your skills, meet a lot of creatives from around the world, and have fun. Im curious, did you draw the image? It doesnt look like a photograph. I like the masking of the text. I would suggest one tweak. How about clipping a sunset, a color or a gradient inside the text to enhance the message of "sunset".
You are right, I painted the mountains in Photoshop. Great idea using a gradient, I'll give it a try. Thank you)))

Challenge 2
I loved the way you colored, @timid pier! It made all the assets come out very nicely, the only suggestion I'd have would be to add a touch more contrast on the tail (which you masked really great) and maybe a little more on the wings, this way you'll have the brightness matching even better. Great job! 😉
Whoops, I started this not realizing we were meant to use the same set of assets. Is there a better place to put the finished image when I'm done?
Feel free to use your own assets, @copper veldt 🙂 After you finish you can post in this channel for feedback
@copper veldt The challenges are 100% free form. In some cases, the leader will provide assets he/she believes work well to emphasize the techniques presented. It is your decision whether to follow that lead or not. You can post your work here for review and presentation to the chat. As well, you can create a Behance.net portfolio. Im sure Sam will be going over that during the upcoming sessions.
Thanks for the advice ... is it better like this?

Challenge #02: Hybrid Animal. Hybrid Polarhorse bear.
It's a Catragon! And there's a little piece of fountain grass for the tail. 🙂
Day 1 🙂
I'm looooving these 😄
DCC Day 2,Hybrid Animal,it has been a loooong time since I didn't do some hybrid stuff for animal or human,I think it was a couple months ago or last year, and I need to recall it
Day 1: Photoshop Basics
Place text into an environment using basic Photoshop tools such as Layers, Masks, Selections, and Blending Modes. I did this magazine cover for another Adobe project to help Learn InDesign. This cover was done in PS using stock photos. I also did an image using the provided image taken in Norway, but I like this cover much better.
THAT is so cool! I was expecting one of your kitties!
Very nice blending, @copper moss! I loved how smooth the transition between the horse and the polar bear is. The subject removal worked out really nicely on your composition as well. Great work!
It turned out amazing, @pliant comet! I loved how the colors are very similar contributing to both assets to blend. If you want, you can add a rim light around the edges of the wings just to match the light coming from behind, just like the cat. Awesome work!
Thank you, @coral stone !
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Great job with the textures, @young karma! The removal also worked your nicely, the only suggestion I have would be to ad some shading on the wing, you can do that using a multiply layer just like Sam did on the stream, it will help adding more contrast to the wing too. Well done!
Day 1 is looking super cool @cobalt vigil! I dig the typeface you chose, the detail on the Y adds a cool personality to it. Great work managing the contrast against the background, the pastel tones from the fill and the stroke came out great. Keep it up!
Very nice work with the shading and coloring, @lucid plover, the light direction of both assets makes the whole composition work. The only small suggestion I have would be that since the area where the head is positioned is blurred, you can use Field Blur to create some points around the neck, and apply the same amount of blur that the original bird has, and then create another point with 0/1 blur for the peak and the eyes to make it sharper (in focus). This way you'll match more the depth of field from the original image and make the effect even more believable. Great job, Fery!
Thank You @coral stone

this is COOL
Wow! This is beautiful, Mona! I loved how the assets built that magical look for the whole composition. You did an excellent job blending the pieces, especially on the head and the body transitions. Nicely done!
Amazing work, Sally! I absolutely loved the way that the lighting and the color are matching on your image. The transitions also worked out great! 💯
Day 2 - Hybrid Challenge
Cheers, thanks! It still feels kind of off to me, but I can't quite figure out what I need to do. Any pointers?
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Some areas of the horns are blurrier than the plane where they are positioned, maybe a sharpening effect like Unsharp Mask could fake the sharpness of the area where they are located. Here's an exemple 👇 You don't have to apply it all over just on the areas that are in focus. To make all come together even more you can create a copy merged layer (ctrl+alt+shift+E), convert it into Smart Object and take it to Camera Raw to apply some global effects like Grain, Temperature adjustments and even sharpening itself. 🙂
Ah yeah, you're completely right - the antlers are a lower res image. Adding grain is a good idea + I might have over done it with the field blur. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

Decided to rework yesterday's challenge. It needed some humor.
Very cool edits @queen aspen! Day 1 is looking solid, I like how you added some inner shadow on the letters to emphasize the 3D look of the words. The mask and the reflections worked out great as well.
I loved the glowing look of the day 2 hybrid, I think it adds a cool magical context to the whole composition. Well done!
Nice job blending the assets, @young karma! The only feedback I'd have would be to soften the shadow of the wing so the details can still pop through it adding more dimensionality to the composition. You can use the layer mask technique and opacity to achieve this effect. Keep it up! 🙂
@coral stone thanks for feed back i really need it

My PS DCC #2 with Sam. It was a struggle. It sure could be better but I kind of lost the touch with it. Always goes more bad as I try. Hope you like my horse/lion/eagle. 🙂
Day 2: Hybrid Animals: Addax + Eagle with Zebra stripes.
haha this is super cool, @arctic rover! Great job blending the fish texture. The colors look very consistent, especially on the blue one! I wonder if reducing the contrast of the tail from the right dog would make it blend even better. Just a thought, well done! 🙂
Beautiful works, @plain sable! I loved the results of the hybrid challenge each part fits very well in the scene, if you want you might paint some shadows casted by the animal in the ground. Great job! 🙂
Thanks @coral stone , that's a good call for the shadow...
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
@umbral sapphire Loving those colors and that pattern! Really cool shapes with how the tail flares out!
@cobalt vigil Hah, the true power of the Puppet Warp tool! It's definitely a lot of fun. Nice work getting the coloring of the horse and goose to match. Perhaps you could use a levels adjustment to boost the dark tones of the goose face so that it matches the deeper dark tones of the horse image? Small nitpick but it might help. Nice job!
@compact pecan Ooh, the stripes are a really interesting effect. Impressive you got the Addax head to match on an angle like that, I really like how the head blends in with the frilled feathers around the neck. 👍
@graceful zinc Great job with all these elements! I like the texture you added to the horse body and how it blends nicely with the rest of the colors of the other animals parts. Looks good!
@plain sable Nice job with the blending between the giraffe and the wings! A bit of a cast shadow under the giraffe could be a nice touch to set it in the scene.
@arctic rover Oh wow, really cool colors and texture effects in this challenge! Kind of as surreal look to it, very nice 😄
@queen aspen Both these challenges are looking really nice, the glowing creature effect is a really neat touch!
@copper veldt This turned out great! The blending, lighting, and color of the antlers fit extremely will with the rabbit image. The eye and mouth are also a nice creepy touch.
@fluid kettle I love the high key light and colors of this image! It has a soft peaceful look to it. The elements all blend really nicely together, the graphic background is a great touch as well!
@lucid plover Very cool Fery! I like how you made a point to match the level of focus between the two images
@pliant comet Solid work with the Catragon! The lighting and contrast matches nicely and the green eyes make for a great focal point.
@young karma Looking good! Nice job with all these different elements, the raptor head and tail is a cool idea too! 😄
@timid pier I love how far you pushed this one, definitely has a super magical/fantasy look to it, and of course the coloration does a nice job of unifying all the elements. Cool pattern on the body too!
@coral stone Thank you very much for your kind comments on my magazine cover. It’s one of my favorites.

Thanks Ted Iappreciate!
By the way Congrats for your "Mentor" advancement!👍

Very well approach, @candid cape! I loved how you played with the mountains in the background to create the overlaps, it also establishes a nice sense of hierarchy and reading flow to the words. Well done!
You got some very interesting effects on day 2, @chilly granite! I like how the textures created some kind of light on the body, if you want, you might brighten the head and tail just to match the body light values even more, and maybe darken the background just a touch to make it stand out and to look like the hybrid is glowing, just some ideas haha. Nice work!
This is amazing, @hollow yarrow! You managed the perspective, light, and color values very successfully. The composition has a strong focal point the grain made all the assets come out great! 💯
Great job managing the colors, @crude mist! Brighter areas, like white surfaces and depending on the material, always tend to reflect the color around, especially with a sky like that, which makes you sell the effect very nicely. Excellent job with the selections and mask. 🙂
Great job with the shadow, @plain sable! Really helps the hybrid to fit in the scene! 🙂
Loved the high contrast of the clipped image, @chilly hawk! It really makes the text stand out against the background. The reflection worked out very nicely too. Well done!
Super cool work, @meager bison! I like how you matched the assets on the turtle's body. The only small detail that I have, would be to add a touch more contrast to the wings, just to match more the original contrast value of the turtle. Well done! 🙂
thanks 😉

Great job, @vague swift! I loved how you played with the scale of the head, it adds a cool personality to the animal. Also, the texture helps the whole image to match. The only suggestion I have would be to use a levels adjustment layer and brighten the eagle's head just a touch, to match the luminosity values of the horse's body. Just a subtle adjustment will be enough, great job! 🙂
Wow I dig the magical context of your image, @young karma! Loved how you created another world on the turtle's shell. My point of feedback would be to add warmer tones to the woman, the sky always dictate how the color and light will be like, and since you have a very warm sky, the woman would naturally reflect those colors, a color balance adjustment layer might be a good way to bring those tones. Well done!
And the second !
Loved your image choice, @burnt pike, the typeface and the colors worked out very well too. Nicely done!
Great job blending the assets, @ruby panther! Loved how you combined the angles very successfully, the colors were the finishing point to make everything come out great. Well done! 🙂
Thank you! Have a great day!

Hi @fluid wharf! Great to see you! Great job matching the angles of the hybrid animal, I really like how the eagle's head follows the same line as the body. The contrast worked out very nicely on day 1. 🙂

I feel observed... Am I wrong?😉 Great composite! I like the idea of eyes on butterfly wings. Body looks fine too with a great skin transition, good perspective match and I like how you played with the blur to make the scene believable. Impressive work!
Lol Shawn! Well done... What animal the "Fur ball" is (before your huge amount of work adding the tiger face😉 ). Seriously the most important is not the amount of time spent but the final result. Your "tiger ball" looks nice!
Thank you! The fur ball is a hedgehog or an Igel in German if that helps.

@dusky wave Very cool design for Challenge 2! Just job with all the different elements. Though I wonder if the texture on the horse body could be set to a blending mode other than normal to show some more of the lighting information from the body for a more realistic look? Looks good!
@burnt pike Such a cute idea for this challenge! All the elements fit together very well in terms of lighting and contrast, well done!
@runic sequoia Ooh, so cool, I love how creative you got with this in terms of playing with the silhouette and shapes of the create! It definitely makes for a really unique look. Nice job!
@fluid wharf Nice work on these! Both challenges are looking good, and challenge one has some nice clear contrast. 👍
@void hornet Super cool idea! Really unique look to this one, I love the pop of color from the fish fins. Very nice to see all the assets you used as well, nice work!
@candid chasm This Day 2 challenge came out great! Really cool idea and well executed, the lighting and colors match very well. Great job on the clean masking too!
@outer gulch Really cool idea for the textures on this, the colors from the shell almost give it a bit of a fiery/molten look. Very cool!
Challenge 2 I've been having problems with Photoshop select and mask so I had to fight through it just to do something much more simple but in the end, I wanted to do. I found the photographers collection of horse photos and gave it wings. I added some color overlay and shadows to try to blend them to look more natural. If i have time I want to add stripes.
Very nice pegasus !!!
You did a fantastic job blending the wings, @safe flint! The light and color values are very spot on. Great work!

day 2 challenge 2
@coral stone - as usual you nailed the place I was having trouble - the pink 'dog's' tail. Changing the contrast helped and I changed its position and roughed up the fur a bit more. It helped...but the tail is still bugging me!
No problem, @arctic rover! Maybe this can help, you can brighten the tail and add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to desaturate and get the hue closer to the color tone of the body, tweaking these edits might give you some consistent results. 🙂
Challange 1
Sorry that i post the first challange on day 3, i know its really late, but i just came back from my grandfather's house. Here i use 1 background, 1 texture, and a few adjustment layer.

Challenge 3
Very nice job managing the light direction, @round perch! Great to see you again! I like how the subject is looking at the dog, it adds a nice visual flow to your image. The only point of feedback would be to smooth the layer mask just a touch, you can do that by selecting the layer mask and add a little bit of feather in the properties panel, or take the layer to Select & Mask and add smoothness there 🙂Well done!
Super cool composition, @timid pier! I loved the image of the rat in the front. Also, you did a spectacular job making the assets of your image tell a story, it's always a great path to follow when compositing. The mask is looking very consistent as well, I like the way you dealt with the blurred areas of the cat. Well done! 🙂
Very cool composite, @dusky wave! I like how you added some of the colors to make the assets fit. Maybe just lowering the contrast of the meerkat just a touch and adding more to the gopher might make them fit even more in the scene. Nicely done!
Excellent improvement, @split pier! The reflections, the overlaps, and the textures on the letters came all great in your image. Awesome job!

Beautiful work, Bea! Bringing some purple tones from the wings was a very nice idea to integrate all the assets. The only point of feedback I have would be to brighten the wings just a touch, so there could be more details on the black areas matching even more the luminosity from nearby. One trick that I usually do is taking the layer into the Camera Raw Filter and use the shadows and blacks sliders to brighten. Great work!
This turned out really cool @young karma! I like that you added a light source to justify the strong lighting coming from the left. The red eyes of the wolf contrast really well with the dark tones around which is great for the image to tell a story. The shadow looks very spot on too. The only small nitpick I have would be that since the back area of the wolf is blurred you can add the same amount of blur on the ground where the lower paws are located, this way you'll sell even more the composition. A nice filter for those kinds of edits is the tilt-shift. If you have any doubts on how it works, you can check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nevQwHqywl8 or tag me 🙂 Well done!

I loved that you integrated several assets in the scene @young karma! I guess the cat is my favorite one haha. The sky replacement is looking very nice as well. The only point of feedback I would have is that the new sky some halo on the left area of the mountains, you can easily get rid of that using the Sky Brush, it's this icon here 👇 and you can play with the Fade and Shift edge. Well done! 🙂
No problem 🙂
I dig the dark and mysterious atmosphere of your image, Sophie! Great attention to the details, I loved the crow's reflection on the water. Masking trees is also a challenge, the only very small nitpick would be to brighten the shadows of the crow a touch more. You can use the same technique that I wrote to Bea above, using Camera Raw and the Shadows and Blacks sliders. Keep it up!
Thank you for feedback!

@queen aspen Hahah, I love it!!!! The arm on the mountain looks great. Is that masked or puppet warp?? Really cool puppet warp effect on the hand over the eye. Do you think it needs a little shadow to match the shadow from the arm over the chest??
Hello, day 3
@compact pecan That giraffe looks like its in a heap of trouble!!!! To really sell the image, how about a bit of the giraffe shadow on the wall?? The light source seems to be from top right corner.
@eternal mica - haha.. I just deleted the post because I realized I forgot to add-in the shadow. Nice catch!!

Great drawings
@lost helm The drawings are terrific. Theyre right up Sam's alley. He loves drawing characters and creatures. I'll bet he comments on your image. The sky replacement color matches the drawings nicely. From my perspective, I would use a curves adjustment layer to bring more life to the monsters to make them stronger focal points of the image.
Thank you @graceful zinc 🙂
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @graceful zinc
Thank you @eternal mica That fun to hear 🙂 I will take a look what curve adjustment layers are. I am so new to this that I really do not know what it is. But I am here to learn!! thanks again.
Check out the 20:00 mark of today's tutorial. Sam discusses Levels Adjustment layers. Levels and Curves are pretty similar. If you decide to work with either, in this case make sure you clip the adjustment layer to the drawing layer so the adjustment only effects that single layer.
The gorilla photo is from @graceful zinc
@lost helm oops, youre right. my mistake. I apologize.
Thanks @eternal mica I sure will do! Thanks
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
It happens 🙂 No problem
@graceful zinc The color of the sky and the gorilla work so well together. Im not sure what the original gorilla image looks like, but if you could get a few pixels so the the top of its back and the rear leg are less clean cut, it would help sell the image. Good job.
@lost helm I have PhD in mistakes!!!
@short mica The lighting on your creature is spot on. It really picks up the sky and the lighting of the cliff. Great job, as usual.
Cool, thanks for the feedback. It was really light in the original.
I used Sam
I used Sam's multiply on a separate layer technique to darken the gorilla.
@graceful zinc Here's an image of a gorilla similar to yours. You can get a sense of the fur on the back and the legs that I think will help your image.
@graceful zinc One thing I've learned over and over, I can't go wrong following the advice of Sam or Valdair. Theyre both terrific.
Day 3 Surreal with a snake.
@safe flint Oh wow, super image. I love each of the elements. The sky fits the theme perfectly. The snake is so realistic, the lighting and the shine of the scales is done so well. It would be awesome if you could share the elements you used to make the image.
Thanks Valdair!

I dont know if you noticed a post yesterday by Franck that was absolutely off the charts. And what made it even more special to me was he attached the assets he used. (He does that quite often.) Yeah! I like this one. Cast shadow looks fine (maybe a bit intense on the bottom left (behind the edge of the wall) but I nitpick) and hilights match. Well done!
Thanks, @hollow yarrow! Your opinions are high-value! On the bottom left shadow, I intentionally made it slightly darker, figuring as the wall angle changed, the shadow would be darker. Is it too much?
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @hollow yarrow
i think i needed more background elements to make it work, rather than an open sky?!
gave leo more highlights
🤔 ...If the light source is up right not sure the cast shadow should be visible on the left side of the ruins wall. Maybe I'm wrong but It would be worth trying to remove the shadow on this side and compare the two versions (with vs without)...Trial / error is my secret technique (Warning : it's a non pro tips😂 ) Anyway your image looks fine!
@eternal mica it’s going to be a bad day for those hikers! 😂 I feel like you darkened the base image a little too much. Even though the sun is blocked by the wings, it seems as though there would still be a bit more light cast upon the overall scene. Thoughts?
@hugh it's a good point. I tried color lookup and curves adjustment to play with the lighting. I couldn't get it just right. It got late. I'll play with it tomorrow. Thanks for the critique.

So clear.Nice job
Nice and clean 👌
I like the eyes, good job
Tried out making a centaur for Day 2's challenge - not as easy as I thought
You got some great lighting going on in your image, @cerulean marten! I loved the way it established a dramatic mood in the composition. The cyan tones on the smoke add a cool magical context to the scene. Well done!
Wow! @candid chasm what a great job you did! I loved the way you managed the lighting condition on the owl. The emphasis on the eyes adds a very nice visual interest to the whole image. A very small suggestion that I have is that since the light source is behind, you can add some rim light on the wings, you can go subtle but just to sell even more the effect. You can easily do that with clipping masks, a screen/color dodge blend mode, and a soft round brush with some lighter color sampled from the sun. 💯
Super cool work, @spiral marten! You did very nice work by blending the colors to the water ambiance. I'm not sure if the original asset will allow it, but maybe you could try reducing the brightness of the fins just a touch, this way it will match the light values of the body even more. Great job with the shadows!
Super cool work blending the wings and the horn to the horse, @dusky swallow! The mask looks very consistent on all the edges and I like the subtle shading of the wing that you added. Very well done!
Thankss, leo ill note that
Spectacular job blending the horses to the water, @pliant comet! The white values are very similar which is amazing for the blending. I also like the way you matched the angle and the proportion. If I were the surfer I would start run haha Excellent work!
thanks @coral stone I thought about it, but i wasn't really sure! I will fix it later! ♥
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Wow! Horses really look like wave splahes! Great effect. I like scale given by the addition of the surfer girl. Well done!
Very nice hybrid animal, @blazing oracle! I like the texture that you applied to the lower areas of the horse. The suggestion I have would be to take the wing layer to the Select & Mask and enable the option decontaminate colors, this way you'll remove that blue halo around the edges. Great job masking the eagle's head. 🙂
Excellent job blending the colors, @rocky reef! It makes the assets come together great! The only nitpick I'd have would be to add a little more contrast to the dog's head, so it'll match the light and saturation of the horse's body even more. Well done!
Very nice work, @eternal mica! Especially the placement of the beast in front of the light, justifying all the rim light. Hugh has a very solid point about the lights, if you want, you might add a little more brightness on the dark areas of the sky, so it will match even more the lighting condition of the overall scene. Just one point about that, since the subject's shadows are cast in front of them, it might help to find another sky with a similar lighting condition, with the light coming from the back, you can totally use the original as a reference, and then, you can create some light coming from the beats. Well done!
@pliant comet I want to join the others who have complimented you on your effort. A beautiful piece. Great concept. Very impressive execution. Selecting those assets was an excellent choice. The peaceful feel of the surfer vs the power of the charging horses and the crashing surf comes through so vividly. The image is mesmerizing.
@coral stone Thank you. Interesting observation. If I get what youre suggesting, I need to find an image with the light source coming from the front of the image (or create that light source) and overlay it on the image so the front facing shadows of the two people conforms with that light source. Correct?
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Correct! 🙂
@spiral marten Very strong effort. The blending of the two animals is seamless. The coloration of the rhino is spot on. I would make one small adjustment by giving the text a bit more contrast with a stroke or drop shadow. With the way you have the gradient on the text, perhaps moving it to the top, where it can benefit from the light hitting it might even make it work better. As Sam would say, "but that's just me". Great job.
Thankyou ted! Ill do that on the next challange
@coral stone I'll bet there's a link about that in my future!!! (private joke everybody)
I might add a poem with that lol
Megacow is comming
The pika's a little bit out of focus but I liked the position of the paws so I didn't swap it for another image
Yes 😄
Ill make a sea cow one day 👌
Loved the Mooooove over, @burnt pike hahaha
The colors are very well placed which makes the image realistic. I hope the cow doesn't cross in a red light haha
Great job with the other option too, one thing that you can do to hide the paws a little bit, is using a Dune Grass brush (that's part of the legacy brushes, you can restore it by going to the hamburger menu on the brushes panel) and with the clone stamp tool and paint some grass in front of the paws so it won't get so much attention. You can sample the nearby areas so it will be less obvious 😉

day 3 challenge 3
I loved the new sky that you added, @rocky reef, the mask of the dog's head also looks very consistent. The only step that I would recommend is that you might clip a Color Balance adjustment layer and bring more red to the highlights and midtones, and some cyans to the shadows areas of your foreground. This way the foreground will match the colors present in your sky, since it's the sky that most of the times dictates the colors of the composites. Well done! 🙂
Very interesting choice of images, @sour pagoda! They made you achieve a great result with overlaps, great work!
Thank you very much for your attention to my work, I am very pleased)))🙂

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep it in mind. Though I actually meant that the entire animal was a bit blurry (it's probably not visible in the JPEG after compression) and I didn't change the image because its paws looked good on that rock.
Thank you! The warning message would be a nice touch 😄
@burnt pike Objects May Be Closer Than They Appear!!!!! 🤣 🤣 hysterical concept.
@rocky reef That dog is too lovable to be a monster!!! One idea I might try is to brighten up the dog so that it becomes more of the focal point of the image and differentiates it from the dark mountain a bit more.
Oh got it 😄
In this case, you can try to fake some sharpness using the Unsharp Mask filter, it will add more contrast on the edges and look like it was sharpened. I'd recommend a low value so the image won't get a lot of halos (Usually I use 25%, 25px, and 1 level to get more volume), and that you convert the layer into a smart object so you can always go back and change 🙂
photoshop manipulation
My result from today's challenges - another 2 more of my assets used that makes a total of 13 in four days.
I'll try that, thanks!
Today's Day 4 Challenge, the painterly effect!
Remember that you can click Get More Brushes within Photoshop to download and try more brushes.
If anyone wants my brushes you can download them HERE: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16J9WCCxHwIV_TJiT0dOBnaw1JbbN37U5/view?usp=sharing
Today I was primarily using Sampled Brush 1 3 for the portrait, and Messy Brush for the background.
@bleak fossil Thanks for providing that Sam. I need lots of practice using brushes. You pointing me in the right direction is a big help.
I love the picture you posted. It is so realistic. The one thing I would ask about is the soft green smudge you added to the cheek and the forehead. Is that to mimic a lighting effect that would appear in a photo bouncing off the BG?
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@eternal mica It's mostly to create more of a painted look. Probably not something you'd see in classic 1800s oil painting, but a lot of times in portraits you see a playful use of color with colorful brush strokes applied in a playful way. It's just an addition that I thought could make it look less photographic. Though at the same time when I paint I often try to fit a little bit of the color of the environment into some areas where there might be bounced light, but this was more of the former mentioned reason.
DCC Brushes
@rocky reef So good! Excellent work, I really like the look of the hair, and the texture/colors of the background adds a great feel to the image
@dusky wave Very cool! I like the canvas texture within the portrait. My main suggestion would be to try to keep the most contrast and clarity within the face to keep it as a strong focal point. 👍
Thanks Sam! I felt like I could've done more with the bg but Ill need to download more brushes and play around with them. Do you primarily use the brushes that are made by Kyle?

Challenge day 4
@young karma Very well done. your handling of the lighting is really very good. You executed Sam's technique on the mane and the edges very well.
@bleak fossil Your brushes are awesome!🤩
@misty compass Wow, I had to open the image up full to make sure it wasnt a photo. I like the halo effect you have around the head, and the "light" you have reflecting off the skin. Beautiful.
Thank you so much!

I like how the effect produced some interesting results in your image, @young karma, especially the textures on the subject! The background is looking very cool as well, the colors allow the subject to stand out. Nicely done!
Day 2 Pegasus: My grass and sky, horse and owl from AdobStock.
Wow! Turned out great, @forest aspen! I loved how the colors of the wings combine really nicely with the warm tones from the horse. The way you blend the horse with the grass is excellent, if you want, you might add a little bit of a shadow cast by the horse just to help to sell the effect even more. 💯
Lovely composite, @eternal kelp! I really like the way you combined the perspectives and added a bird to break the bounds. The only point of feedback I'd have would be to use the Refine Edge brush on the trees just to make the mask even more natural. Well done!
Day 3 - I'm trying to catch up ....
Day 2 revised with soft cast shadow
Which animal do you see?
Day 3 Atmospheric Perspective -- Bulldog Puppies in the Stream
A monkey, but it took me a while to see it haha I would play a lil more with the shadows.. But i love the creativity... nice job!
Slowly catching up with the challenges, here's my hybrid animals for Day 2 @bleak fossil 🙂
Thanks Sam for a fun challenge. Apologies for not following all of the challenges.
Great job blending the colors, @haughty gale! I loved how you brought some tones from the sky to the animal. The helicopter also helps the whole composition to tell a visual story. Well done!
This is very cool, @deep mango! Loved the way that the angle of both assets matches perfectly. The only small detail that I have would be to use the Decontaminate Colors option on the Select & Mask workspace, to help you reduce that halo around the dog's head. Nicely done! 🙂
Yesssss, you're right @coral stone 🙂 I didn't even notice this option in the Select and Mask field 😄
Great improvement, @forest aspen! Loved how the shadow made the horse fit even better in the scene. Day 3 is looking very cool as well, perhaps reducing the contrast of the dog in the front might help it fit more in the scene. I believe by dragging the white slider (from the bottom area, not the histogram) of a Levels adjustment layer might help you achieve the effect successfully. The dog from the back and the middle look excellent. 🙂
No problem 😉 Looks great! The edge is combining even more with the sky!
Very cool work, @cerulean marten! The mask looks very solid and I like how you added a shadow to make the asset fit more to the scene. Nicely done!
Ps DCC 2021-06 04 Brushes
@cerulean marten The image is incredibly realistic. Awesome job.
Tx 😀
Loved the way you built the textures in the background, @eternal mica! The details and the brush strokes turned out very nice as well, especially the way you preserved the original shading but still made it look like a painting. Well done!
@haughty gale No apology necessary. Do as many as you'd like whenever you'd like. That's why the schedule now runs over 4 weeks. This allows more people to have time to complete the 9 challenges. We look forward to seeing all your posts.
@coral stone Thank you Vladair. Ive used this asset before. It always gets a good response. I think its more the asset than how I treat it!!

@deep mango I tried so hard to think of a way to use an elephant in my piece and I couldnt come up with an idea. Yours is so good. I would suggest one tiny tweak. The dog's neck blending into the shadow at the bottom might look better if the white was faded more into the grey/black. The white seems a bit too stark a contrast. Your piece/you decide. Great job.
Thank you @eternal mica, your suggestion is actually quite good. I've been trying to blend the neck with a soft opacity brush but it still needs some tweaking. I'll work on it tomorrow with fresh eyes and head 😁

Day 4. It's not quite how I want it yet. I'm having another PS hiccup.
I am just starting, day #1 merged two photos i had taken from my trip to Laos🙃
Day 4: Brushes. I started with this image (from https://hildasandstrom.com/ELLE-5).
That is so beautiful!
Steps: in Filter Gallery I used Angle Stroke & Poster Edges. For background I used main image with Blur - Average
@misty compass Thanks Sophie. I'm still tweaking it with more hair strokes.

My attempt at the Day 4 Challenge! 😃
Canvas: Brushstroke? I couldn't decide...
The assigned image Mixed with reference of Christian Krogh, a norwegian painter that i like 🙂
Day 4: Painted Woman. The model and one of the textures are from Adobe Stock; I've used some other textures garnered through the years, and created the background texture and the oak frame. All ready to hang.
Day 3 Revised @coral stone The levels idea worked so well with the foreground pup that I did the same for all. Thanks -- I'd forgotton that trick. I also changed the color of the middle pup a little. It looked greenish.

Updated with more hair strokes. It's a mixture of the modern velvet dog painting and this classic painter.
@young karma Nice job. I like the font you selected. What is it called? Is this your first DCC?
hi @eternal mica thank you, yes my very first dcc for photoshop, very new to using the tool.. just started after I saw the video today.. before that I posted in illustrator, since Monday but it was first one as well 🙂 new to the world of Adobe.. enjoying it!

Ok I just joined an hr ago. The talent of people here is incredible. I looked at the posts above. Wow. Very inspiring. I completed my creative challenge day 1. I need to get caught up to day 3-4???
@pale lynx Hello Plabill23. Welcome. You can read what I posted a few moments ago for Rosie and also for Asmita, as it applies to you as well. There are no rules here, other than to have fun, learn, be courteous, be respectful, be family friendly in your discourse and posts. The talent you will see exhibited here will blow your mind. I use it as inspiration not intimidation. The other members in the chat are here to support you and encourage you. If you need help finding your way around, or understanding any of the DCC, feel free to ask. We are here to help in any way we can. Enjoy. I look forward to seeing your posts.
There are a number of new members in the chat I'd like to give a Discord tip to. There is a search option in the top right of your screen. If you click on it and select the "from:" option, you can type in the first few letters of a members name, then click on that name. All of that person's posts will be collected for you. So if you find a particular creative whose work you really like, you can see all the posts by that person and get a real feel for what they've been doing over time. Its also a quick way to tie a comment made by Valdair or one of the other mentors to the actual image the comment is about. I find that to be a key learning tool. Try it out. Let me know how you like it.
GAK! I'm real happy I'm painting in pixels and not oil! Oil is hard!! 😅
@cerulean marten Great effort. The BG adds so much to the image. Your paint strokes are well done. The vibrance of the light source and the earring is well done. Good job
Tx, liked doing it - very relaxing exercise. I think I will be doing this with a lot more of my photos 😀
