@restive mountain Looking good Cole! I think repeating challenges or techniques definitely allows you to get a better feel for it the second time around. I like the color change this effect has in the center, adds some nice interest!

#

@karmic estuary Ooh, nice take on this challenge! A little creepy too, hah. I think giving the whole water effect a subtle blur to break up those super crisp edges and fit it in with the softness of the rest of the image could be a nice touch. 👍

#

@tropic haven The water effect is looking good! I like the bit of blur you got on the left side, sells that waterfall effect a bit. It could be nice to fade it a bit more on the left bottom side where the line looks a bit more crisp. Nice work with the masking too!

#

@bitter cradle Loving these different color schemes! Awesome cool to see how much lighting and color can drastically change the mood of an image. The colors of the logo match the photo really well, very nice work!

#

@soft valve Really great idea and take on this challenge! The shape of the water effect matches the perspective of the photo very well too, nice work 😄

#

@toxic trellis The text is looking good and nice job on the background graphic shapes! It could be nice to see a little bit more contrast in the letters down below for better readability. Nice work 😄

#

@worn yew Haha, very nice, I like the variety of effects. Could be cool to add a third flower with a third effect to really push that theme. Nice job 😂

#

@compact flume Definitely worth updating if you haven’t yet to get all the newest features. Nice work with these, the second attempt is looking good! It might look more like a flow of water if you blurred the edges a bit to soften then but keep the sharp edge around the spout. Nice job 👍

#

@unkempt field Nice job! The logo/graphics work really well over this photo. The color grading also gives it a much cooler more winter type feel which is really interesting. Well done!

#

@nova swan Hah, really nice photo for the watering can image! The whole image has a sort of slightly soft edged look going on with the whole thing, it could help to blur the water ever so slightly to make it match the overall look a bit more. Nicely done 😄

#

@lavish solar Oooh, really interesting application of this challenge! Great idea. Really nice blending of the two textures together, looks very seamless, well done!

#

@vernal ice Nice job! Subtle, but cool to see how this can be used to enhance an existing effect a bit more. Nicely done!

#

@mighty relic This makes for a really interesting graphic effect in its own right! Really love the texture you got in this, adds a lot of interest!

#

@proper cave This is a great photo and the effects you added add a lot of interest! The only thing is the text seems a little lost around the dark background, I wonder if a bit of a glow around the outside could really make the whole thing pop. Looking good!

@bleak fossil Thanks Sam! Still going to work on your notes for my second challenge, cause I'm grateful for the feedback! Slowly trying to get more loose and fun with graphics, my usual work applications are so boring and utilitarian... gotta shake it off!

@nova swan Hah, really nice photo for the watering can image! The whole image has a sort of slightly soft edged look going on with the whole thing, it could help to blur the water ever so slightly to make it match the overall look a bit more. Nicely done 😄
@bleak fossil Thank you Sam I appreciate your feed back. I wanted it soft so it was more surreal but forgot to soften up the water.

#Challenge04, No idea what background to put here to emphasize the brush effect, all suggestions are very welcomed! Thanks!

@spiral apex Your background is called a "Mezzotint". Similar to what you see on some drop ceiling tiles. Might I suggest you add something to the sky? Right now it's just a while bunch of white space with the tint. Even if you render some clouds, stretch the layer a bit to make it more natural, and near the bottom fade it to white? Just some thoughts is all.

Challenge 3 Filters. Earlier this year, I was down the coast taking photos. Regarding the water trailing the fish, I tried the blue colors but I wanted something more wild just for fun. Here is my challenge four! I really let my imagination run with this challenge. Originally, I planned on making a normal blue Eagle with a black beak like @jolly quest did. But, as I kept going with these colors, they gave me glass vibes so I made him into a glass statue of the mascot for my farm, Foodie Farms. It was so much fun painting the blue and then painting the white to make it look like glass. I also played around with the smart filters to emboss this. And I used bevel and emboss and outer glow in the layer filters. This was a lot of fun to create!

BigEvilDoer, as always, I appreciate any tips you can pass along. I agree. I also think I should have had the gradient start in top left corner and run to lower right. I wasn't so sure about the farm simulator theme when this started, but it has offers some surprising inspiration as I've moved through the project. Though for me it's more of a federal lands management simulator. The brushes challenge was a lot of fun. @modern halo thanks 🙂 yes the sprout colour is the eye colour but then to capture the shaded part I changed the blending mode to colour dodge. What do you think?I’m new to photoshop, still lots to experiment with so your comment is encouraging for me.

It’s interesting you mention the colours, as I was trying to see what clashed with green, didn’t like how magenta looked, then it went to pale orange and then pale lemon yellow which turns out to be complementary ha I liked it too..I love colour so I’m looking forward to experimenting with it more..

#

@eternal mica Good idea on your background light sourcing. What if you add a layer above your background and have a radial, white to transparent blend set at about 50% opacity starting in the top left corner? That might help add a "sun behind the clouds" type feel.

#

@north galleon I like the lion! The colour choices really work well together. Might I suggest adding in a couple of dodges and burns to help give it more depth? Right now the image appears a bit flat. Overall, good job!

@crystal stream It can definitely take some practice to get used to. You see this kind of style fairly often, but it's a style which makes a lot of use of kind of chiseling the shapes of light and shadow with usually 3 tones, light, midtone, and shadow. If you look up "Cel-shaded" you'll see good examples of this. I often see people use gradients really effectively for this type of work. This is looking nice, I think getting a solid color for the eye with a highlight could unify it together nicely.

#

@rocky venture This is great! Love how you're really running with the theme. The cel-shaded type of effect on the crow is looking really good, really nice presentation in these designs too!

#

@vestal sky Oooh, great effect! Kind of makes me think of some 90s MTV type ad or something for some reason, hah. Currently the ground and the sky both have a similar value, I wonder if darkening down the land or giving it a gradient might help separate the two even more. Just a thought. Really cool effect you got with this technique!

#

@plain sable Very nice! Did you draw this yourself? Really great texture and I like how it's consistent between the been and text logo. Really nice color contrast too!

#

@drifting berry Ooh, Great idea for this challenge! Really nice texture and the color of the blue seems to match the lighting really nicely. I think if you added a cast shadow across the water to match the lighting of the image and a little bit around the rim of the fountain it would really match the entire lighting of the scene. A multiply layer on a clipping mask would be great for this. Looks good!

#

@crystal raft this is looking really good! I like the soft lighting in this photo, and how the orange from the graphic sort of matches the color scheme of the ground. Nice work on the graphic as well!

#

@real wolf very nice! There’s definitely a great contrast between the yellow of the text and the purple and pink sky, it reads very well! I really love the stylized graphics of this whole thing and how the background matches the logo style nicely. The fruit graphics look really solid too!

#

@hearty wharf wow! such nice colors and textures. I really don't have any critiques - it looks great.
@merry ember LOVE this color palette. the orange and green can be tricky, but i think you landed on a nice "harvest"-y feeling. my only feedback is that the background seems to be a bit low quality. perhaps you could find an image that has a higher resolution? (or work smaller). Hope that helps!
@elfin crag nice crow illustration! i like how you used cell shading but still achieved texture. I'm guessing you used a larger texture and changed the blend mode? nice job!
@plain sable ha! nice. this would make such a great Autumn social media profile pic
@cerulean steppe wow, you managed to keep a lot of detail while adding some cool texture
@elder ridge this design has a lot of movement! i'd be careful of using upside-down text if it's still legible. it might be confusing to the viewer.. one way you could tackle using upside-down text is using it more like a texture, so that it is no longer a "letterform" that the viewer will try to read. hope that helps!
@stuck pulsar wow! so cool. did you utilize some half-toning to get those dots?
@elfin crag "andy warhol scarecrow" haha! love it.
@latent island your "after" is almost unrecognizable as the "before"! great job. did you use a black/white filter to achieve the snow-y look?
@true holly I think this is really successful because the background is so simple while the foreground provides more detail. it helps the viewer know where to look! nicely done :)

Thank you @sterile bane . Yes to your question. Not so much the black filter but the white and added in a mix of blue, took away saturation, took away clarity, and numerous other combinations. The sky is from another picture I had and I used lightroom to edit it as well and then in photoshop blended the two together so it looks like the clouds covered the mountains.

@bright sage Really great effect! These stylized filters unify the images together nicely. Definitely gives me a Oregon Trail/Early 90s computer game vibes, very cool!

I had a lot of trouble with liquify for some reason. I have used it before but this time, it just didn't want to push the pixels. I had to make it really small to get the sharp points like she had and then it took forever to get the pixels to move even a tiny way. I ended up using puppet warp and distort to finish dragging the points out. Oh well, whatever works, right? I can't wait to get a new computer. This one is maxed out with what I am trying to do. After one change last night, my computer spent the next HOUR thinking before it gave me back control. Sigh.

@tropic haven cool! i noticed that the edges have some rough pixels. if those are difficult to remove, you could use them to your advantage! one way to do so would be to use the polygonal lasso tool and select around the edges and fill the selection with white (and move it behind the figure). that would add a "cut paper" look to the edge. hope that helps!
@ruby panther the lighting in this design is really awesome! i think you could push it even further (like you did on the shoulder) to really get that sun glow in there.
@safe mauve wow this really looks like a painted collage! nice job - i'm glad you stuck with it
@gusty hearth haha! i love the background. reminds me of an easter egg :)
@uneven flume fun! i think the figure is such a focus point that you could crop it on the right size (unless you're planning on adding some text or other design elements there)
@elfin hatch that's definitely a powerful image
@covert gulch love the color palette here. since everything else in this design is pretty detailed with atleast 3 colors, maybe you could try adding one or two more layers to the hair? right now it feels a bit flat but i think it's an easy fix :D
@young karma ha! where did he come from?!
@drifting berry cool crow! i love the feather texture. i'd love to see one or two more layers that adds shadows or highlights

#

@covert gulch I love the idea and the snail is super cute 🙂 As a first time it's really good, my only advise is to work on timing. Right now it all runs at the same pace, you could play wit the consistency. You could animate the water, then add a small pause on the frame where the water can is away. Then add another pause when the plant and all leaves are opened. the snail popping out of the leaf is spot on 🙂

#

By adding pauses like 0.5 or 0.3 seconds at some frames, you add more dynamic to the animation 🙂

pliant geyser

@eternal mica Reduce your image size - this will make the GIF smaller.

@primal fulcrum wow! look at that animation! the secondary movement of the fur moving on the tail is super nice. it would be cool to see how the dog is introduced to the scene.. or maybe the dog is there the whole time (patiently awaiting their meal?)
@mighty relic @kindred kernel nice custom textures on your pots!
@modern halo these are really realistic textures that you might find on a pot - nice job!
@pastel wraith love how you combined yesterday's challenge with today's. as a next step, you could try integrating the two styles. for example, you could add a dark green stroke to the edges of the pot to match the sprout.. and maybe add some of that liquified texture to the sprout animation?
@oak comet nice! you're combining multiple day's work - that's awesome
@sacred field that rust texture is looking really realistic.
@young karma awesome! i think you could add some of those bright white highlights in other areas too, since the feathers are a similar glossiness as the beak
@cold oyster you've got a lot of great textures going on in this piece! i'd like to see some of those black dot texture pieces on the hair too (to tie the hair to the rest of the piece)
@young karma you're uploading it in the right spot! nice job
@latent island nice crack illustration! i'm curious as to how to accomplished it. did you draw the entire crack and then reveal it as the animation moved forward?
@merry ember great texture on that pot!
@young karma that's certainly a freaky angel! freakiness aside, the composition is filled out nicely with the diagonals that the arms and wings create
@grave crescent HA! this is awesome. you're using the power of clipping masks for good!

#

@rocky venture cool! this feels like an achievement graphic that you'd receive in a video game. i wonder what kind of natural texture you could apply to the flower to match the feeling of the pot?
@modern meteor it's nice to see your designs! don't worry too much about rushing through the challenge - we're always here to provide feedback even if you finish after the challenge officially ends 🙂 I think you did a nice job of choosing a secondary type size that doesnt feel too big or small for the space. nice job!

@honest gorge this illustration feels really cohesive! the shading on the metal and the rabbit feels like it exists in the same "world". nice job!
@tropic knoll how cute! the shading looks nice to me. feels almost metallic

Maybe increasing the darks could fit it a bit closer to the contrast of the scene, as we can see there’s some decently deep shadows in the grass there. Nothing too intense since it’s a bright scene, but a bit could help, even a gradient to keep it darker towards the bottom. Nicely done!

#

@tropic haven Loving that somewhat metallic looking texture you got on there! The texture and specularity give it a really cool look and feel. My only suggestion would be to keep the pot stationary throughout the plant’s animation for a more natural look. Looks good!

young karma
bleak fossil
#

@young karma Great metallic look and texture to this! The shine looks really nice. The animation is looking really solid too, well done!

#

@soft valve The texture for both the pot and table looks great! There’s a nice simple color scene going on with this design that works really well too. The table’s texture is really interesting, it almost reads as the back of a couch or something at first, but then kind of looks like some interesting pearlescent finish which is really neat. Nice work on the perspective of the table too, solid work!

#

@crystal stream The plant animation is looking really nice! I like that the pot and plant have a similar style. Looks good!

#

@snow abyss This is great! I really love the way you layered the text and the animation, looks really fluid. The animation with the petals is a really nice touch too!

#

@sacred field Nice job, the shovel texture looks really natural and cleanly edited. Well done!

#

@split pier Very nice, I really like the texture on this piece. The way you used the gradients gives the lighting a really cool dramatic look too. The text is a bit hard to read at a glance, perhaps putting a layer under it to give it a darker backing could help the shapes stand out overall. Maybe a backing that’s the same color as the raven’s lighter tones could look good. Really nice work on this!

#

@young karma Oooh, that’s a super interesting effect! hah. Yeah, definitely has a bit of a creepy look, nice job 😄

#

@latent island Great work, I really like the gold/brown and black color scheme you got in this design. The way the head of the staff fits into the text as a sort of logo works really well. The color scheme and the filter style really unifies everything together!

#

@odd spear I like how you incorporated the pot and plant into the logo. The animation and the masking is looking really nice! I like how the pot has a sort of stylized look and texture to it, it works with the plant style nicely!

#

@merry ember The pot looks really good, I like the texture! I think the whole design would look nice if you edited out those white areas between the leaves, the quick selection tool or magic wand should be able to grab those pretty cleanly and easily. It might also help to increase the contrast of the top leaves a bit by boosting the darks a little to make them blend in with the darker bottom leaves more. This is looking really good!

#

@young karma You’re in the right place for sharing the challenges. You can also create a project on your Behance to upload all your challenges to as well if you want. I really like this texture and the lighting effect in the center of the cup, nice work. I think it could help clean up the design if you extend the texture all the way to the left side of the cup to make it cover it all evenly. Nice work on this 😄

#

@elfin crag I definitely think a tablet can be a pretty big help with certain things, anytime you’re doing freehand work especially. This looks great! I really like the sense of perspective you got by making it increase in size, that and the speed of the animation both work really well!

#

@young karma Ooh, this is a really cool effect for the slide. Really nice job masking everything, it looks really clean and natural! The texture kind of adds a sense of movement to the image, very nice!

#

@hearty wharf Oooh, I love that branded look you got on the pot. Looks really natural, nice work with the texture as well. And I’m still a big fan of your plant animation, the various stages of growth resulting in the flower reads really well!

#

@restive wyvern Great effect! I really love those colors and the line effect you have near the bottom adds a really interesting element. Very cool!

#

@modern halo Very cool Willi! If you want to push it a step further you could get a nice lighting effect by clipping a multiply layer to the pot shape and airbrushing a little shadow with a large soft round brush. Using this to get a bit of a gradient around the sides and/or bottom of the pot can add some nice dimension. Maybe something like this? Nice work on the texture!

#

@bitter cradle You’re killing it with this potion challenge! Really great sense of lighting with the deep shadows and the highlights look great. Really nice job!

#

@tropic haven Really nice work, all these shapes look really solid! I like the way the top of the liquid has a soft edge, almost looks like it’s steaming or dissolving. I think you could probably push the shadows even darker on this and allow that shadow to gradate out a little further towards the highlight. Might give it a bit more depth. Nice work!

#

@bright sage Nice work on all these shapes! There’s a good sense of texture and lighting on this with the way you used that dissolve effect. Nicely done!

#

@true holly That’s great! A graphics tablet can definitely make certain things easier, anytime you need to freehand something really. This is looking good, it definitely has that game icon type of feel. Nice consistent style to the whole thing!

#

@cold oyster Very nice, these are looking really good! I like the whole cycle you show in the animation, that was a good idea. Great texture on the pot too!

#

@wise crypt Great texture on this potion, I really like the sort of sandy/glittery look of it. You got some nice lighting as well!

#

@crystal stream Very nice! This is looking really nice and clean. I think you could probably even extend the shadow a bit more to add a little more depth. The highlight and texture from the dissolve brush are looking really good 👍

#

@snow abyss Yeah, I think the dissolve effect has its purposes. Good tool to have in case you need it. This is really cool! Kind of looks like a sticker with a glittery texture or something. Really liking that sort of shimmery effect!

#

@ornate echo Very nice, the light switching effect looks nice! You’re also welcome to post these in the current challenge until the new challenges start if you want to work on anything over the weekend. Nice work!

#

@modern halo Very cool, I like the style with this, the two potion bottles fit together nicely. Somehow reminds me of the Powerpuff Girl’s intro, hah. Looks good 😄

#

@tropic knoll This fits in really nicely with the scene! Great color contrast too. Nice work with compositing the images into the bowl and the reflection is a great touch!

#

@modern meteor Really cool texture on the water effect. I like the bold simple colors in this piece, and the masking is looking really nice as well!

#

@restive mountain Really great concept with the potion image! I really like the faded you gave it, really sells that deep water effect, and the light coming from the surface is a really nice addition. Solid work!

#

@forest aspen This is awesome! Really great job, I love the cohesive style to the whole thing, also definitely seems to fit that bright/friendly game style theme. Really great variety in the different textures of the whole design too!

#

@sacred field Nice use of the animation challenge! I like how the green button seems to have a bit of a glow too, nicely done!

#

@mighty relic This is looking really nice! That dissolve effect gives it a nice subtle texture, and you did a really nice job on the lighting. A nice even blend between the shadows, midtone, and highlight. The reflected light in the shadow adds a nice extra element of depth!

#

This is my result for Challenge day 5 (Liquify).

In my photo project the layers are:

  1. The man is the actor, Vin Diesel. This is a wax model of the Vin Diesel, and I shot this at Hollywood’s wax museum when I was in Los Angeles for a trip. I have chosen this photo because I liked the strong hands for this project.
  2. The Hair is taken from my wife’s photo
  3. The hat is from a photo of a friend of mine.
  4. The background was made by me at all. Hope you like it.

@rocky venture power up lager! love it. my only feedback is that the shape of the can feels more like canned veggies than a beer can. it could be stretched a bit taller (and tapered a bit at the top if you're up for a challenge)
@shut trout it's great to see how you combined multiple days challenges for this one!

@patent vortex very nice! did you use the symmetry tool to draw the leaf? it looks great
@sonic bobcat haha! nice job compositing all of those different sources
@worn yew awesome! this is really believable for a make believe game. one note - the background and scroll are pretty detailed (even if the background is edited to be more simple) compared to the potion. right now, it doesnt seem like they exist in the same world. maybe adding some more realistic texture to the potion will help? that could achieved by using photographs as texture and changing the blend mode to overlay. lmk if that helps!

@buoyant pendant i think the textures on this look really nice! the shadows and highlights look great on the water as well

@hearty wharf thank you for all of your awesome work! the lighting on the awning looks really nice, almost like it's a night market that is lit by street lights
@modern halo wow check out that texture! the abstraction of the wood as a more painterly texture is really nice. the text on the awning is a bit hard to read because of the dark blue/black text. i would recommend lightening dark blue to another shade of blue and it should be a bit easier to read!
@orchid steeple nice lighting on the awning! i'd like to see some lighting on the rest of the design as well. overall, good job!
