Day 8 Painting with light. I saw the series finale of The Good Place and was inspired.

bleak fossil
#

@hearty wharf Ooh, you really nailed the animated butterflies, really nicely done! The size variation and overlapping shapes add some really nice depth too. Great pop of color also, great work!

#

@keen granite Really nice work the animation, the movement looks really solid! The size variation of the butterflies looks good too, nice work!
And for Day 8 I don’t think the gradient is too strong, but maybe blurring it slightly might make it look more like light streaks while giving the shape edges of the rest of the light rings more focus?

#

@supple canopy Very cool! It could be a nice little touch in the last frame to mask the top part of the berry that would be covered by the top part of the bird’s beak. Might add a little more depth and sell the effect even more. Nice job!

#

@fringe thicket Very cool! The night scene definitely has some nice contrast, but I really like the day scene! There’s some great warm/cool contrast going on, and the lighting looks really interesting overall with some great colors. And the glowing lights still have some nice strong contrast. My only suggestion would be to maybe mask out the dark blue/green on those yellow foreground shrubs below the shell to get them a bit of depth like they’re in the foreground unaffected by that shadow area. Looks great!

#

@supple canopy I think it’s a bit dark, often time even night scenes have a good amount of light to illuminate the subject. I like the cool blues of the scene, but I think you could brighten it up a bit and allow the warm color of the magical particles to pop through a bit. Nice work 😄

#

@willow nebula Ooh, great effect Hilde! I love how it almost looks like fire beneath the surface. Definitely compliments that other worldly look the skull gives. The flower over the eye is a really cool look too, blends in pretty naturally and adds to the interesting look. Well done!

#

@hearty wharf Very nicely done Tan! The movement looks really nice and smooth, and the legs and antennae are very convincing and a great touch!

#

@vague shuttle The image with the clouds and the girl in the rob looks great! I love the warm colors of the cloud against the blues in the water, really nice look to it. My only suggestion would be to soften up the bottom hard line of that yellow area right in front of the white pillars. Looks good!

#

@static coral Nice job, the animation looks good! I think you could probably push the back/bottom area of the far wing into perspective even more so it’s not so high up in the first frame. Might make the perspective look a bit more natural. Looking good!

#

@kindred kernel Ooh, nice work Gerard, I like the way the earth looks like it’s pivoting on the pinkie finger, looks good!

#

@proper cave Very cool, you really transformed the image a lot with that lighting change. Nice work on illuminating the ground. It could look nice to illuminate the person a lot more, especially in the upper body, as if they’re catching more light from the orb. It might make for a nice focal point. Well done!

#

@small drift Hah, very nice Jen! Clever way to animate the butterfly. Nice work with all the different animated elements!

#

@dim dagger Very cool! Really great contrast between the light statue and the dark background. Nice use of graphic elements and the red pop of color. Very cohesive image!

#

@fallow bough Nice work Ken, you even animated the cast shadow as he’s pulled up, very nice! I have a hard time choosing, the second one is a little snappier, but the first one almost has more context being able to see the orb comes towards him and all. Maybe the first one if I had to choose. I really like the flash of light as it enters and exits too!

#

@solid linden Very nice, these challenges are great for picking up new tech it’s and method. Looks good!

#

@dire glacier Oh man, I bet, bird wings have some much more movement going on with the different segments of wings folding and all that. Butterfly wings are much easier to animate, hah. This looks good! Really love what you did with the sky and the color.

#

@hidden pendant Ooh, I really like how the shadows of the face on the right side fade nicely into the same values of the shadows in the tree behind her. The color scheme of everything fits nicely together. if you're trying to match the lighting of the two faces, I often like using masked levels adjustment layers or color dodge layers for boosts in lighting. Maybe something like this? (this one I used a masked levels adjustment layer with a soft round brush)

Finally finished Challenge 9 Animation. I always seem to challenge myself with the animation challenges. Not entirely happy I think the kids head should probably move as well, but it was enough just to get the arm to move (I forgot I would have to fill in his waist and leg when moving the jacket with the arm).

#

@rigid wolf Really nice work on challenge 7! The masking is looking solid. I think you could push the lighting even more by giving earth a bit more of an intense lighting like we see on Paul's face. Might fit it in with the scene even more. I often like using a masked levels adjustment layer or a color dodge layer. Maybe something like this? Looking good!

#

@tacit condor Looking good! I like what you did with the lighting effects on the girl and umbrella! The lighting/color change and sky replacement looks really good! Currently the image is so zoomed out, I wonder if making her a bit bigger and closer to the camera might make for more of an impact, though it really just depends what you're going for. Nice work 😄

#

@wispy compass Ooh, very cool! Nice job separating the angel from the background! If you wanted to push it even further it could be nice to mask out the angel separately from the wings. That way when you animate the wings the hair won't be affected and might look a bit more natural. Nice work on the perspective changes!

#

@keen granite Really nice work all these challenges from these past 2 weeks! Some really great work here, glad you could join us for all these!

#

@young karma Very nice! Really cool to see all the animated elements you got in this one! Really great nice colors and graphic shapes in the background as well. It gives the image a great mood and allows the other elements to pop out nicely!

#

@hidden pendant Ahh, very cool! I like how you edited the shirt area for the arm lift! Nice job on this animation. I think you could easily fix the red areas peaking through the white shirt by just putting a whitish solid on a layer underneath. Would probably blend pretty well. Nice work!

#

@vague shuttle Very cool! I really like the blue colors of the glow, it really gives it a nice pop. It could be nice to give the flying ships a little glow that comes off the edge of the ship near the thrusters so it looks like the light is glowing in the air right around them. Might sell that effect a little more. Really nice work compositing all these different elements together!

#

@oblique anvil Ooh, very nice! Cool to see all these different elements animated together. I think animating and the timeline definitely takes a little getting used to. I think there's a lot of potential to play with timing on these one, for example I could see the lightning bold almost having a little delay/charging up period. Love the wiggle after it hits, makes for a nice impactful feeling. Looks great!

vague shuttle
#

Cheers @bleak fossil -- couldn't help myself per your suggestion. Is this what you meant?

bleak fossil
#

@vague shuttle Oooh, I really like those changes! I actually meant the ship up top like this, but those changes look great too and really sell that thruster effect even more! Nice work!

#

@plain sable First of all, I love the added stick figures 😄 They add another dimension to this design and they help to fill in some of the white space of the background. The vertical text on the right should perhaps be a horizontal line of text below the rainbow logo. It also looks pretty squished (it looks a bit like the typeface "rift", which usually is a pretty narrow font).

#

I would also recommend brightening up the purple and blue hues to match the brighter yellow color

@left sand nicely done! that's a very creative use of the animation feature! In reality they probably wouldn't move this much but it does look visually interesting. Great job 🙂

#

@rigid wolf yes, the second version is much more realistic because of the red glow on Paul's face. Be careful with the liquify filter though. His mouth and eyes are visibly warped, so for a more natural look I wouldn't warp them too much 😉

#

@mellow jackal Hah, cute, I like it! Nice work with the masking and making it really fit into the suit. It could be a nice touch to use a multiply layer to make the corgi's head appear like the helmet is casting some shadow. Might help sell the effect even more. Maybe something like this?

#

@rigid wolf Hah, I saw your picture and was going to suggest some red glow on his face but then saw your edit. Very nice, looks good!

#

@jade thistle Nice job, glad you joined us! The ring light makes for a really cool effect on the eyes. Kind of cool how the eyes almost have a planet-like texture too. I think for the white area around the shirt it could help to use the Select->Modify->Contract function by a few pixels. Nicely done!

#

@magic oriole Looking good, I like the background elements in this one!

#

@ruby panther Ooh, this looks great Shawn, very natural! I really like the color scheme and how the orange of the suit seems to fit in with the lighting of the red/orange background. Very cool!

#

@bold valley Very cool, I really like the idea of an official graphic for the background! Nice work on the masking. I wonder if a slight levels adjustment to pump up the darks would help a bit to strengthen her contrast against the background, though that's just a small nitpick. Looks good!

#

@violet nacelle Haha nice! The lighting is on point and the reflection looks natural 🙂 . Apart from this tiny part here, the image is flawless

#

@young karma steamed hams I see. The mask around skinner seems to be a bit tight. Chalmers' mask seems to be just fine 🙂 . If possible, try to use a higher resolution image for skinner; this should automatically improve the mask and overall look.

#

@velvet hearth Well done! The planet looks great in front of the nebula 🙂 . I would suggest making the cat a bit brighter and the edge of the mask slightly softer to better match the overall look of the image.

left tide
glacial path
#

@storm wasp Cool motion blur! Some of the mask work (especially around the smaller wheel) seems to be a bit rough. Luckily you can hide it in the darkness of space 😉 . The overall composition is very tight which doesn't leave much room for the text. It looks like it barely fits in there - if possible, try to transform Stephen to make more room for the quote 🙂

Day one challenge. I used three images, layer masks and blending modes for this image.

bleak fossil
#

@bleak wing Very nice! I think a little color correction to match her to the scene and a levels adjustment to match her contrast and dark tones to that of the background could really help push that realism. Nice work 😄

#

@young karma Hah, I love the glasses. Nice cohesive feel too the colors too! I think it could help to feather the edge of the clouds just a bit to give them more of a natural look. Nice work 👍

#

@haughty gale Ooh, great job on the reflection! Though I think her head would be facing the other way? It might also help to increase the contrast of Val, especially the darks to match the contrast of the scene. Loving the background!

#

@pure plover Ooh, very fitting background, nice job! Val's contrast also makes for a nice pop against the background, and the composition of the image looks really good too. Nicely done!

#

@dusty pond I really like that dramatic red color, gives the image a really strong mood and makes Val seem very sithy, hah. I really like how the red seems to be reflected in her face too, really making everything seem like it belongs in the scene. Very nice!

#

@ember umbra Really fantastic job on this image! I love how you handled the color and lighting adjustments on this, very on point and fits in very well with the environment. Really nice job on the masking too, you nailed this one!

#

@fallow bough Really awesome job Ken! I love how you kept the texture on the helmet with the face replacement. The deep shadows within the helmet look really nice as well, very well put together. Solid work!

#

@magic hedge Nice job putting all these elements together! The lighting around the cat head in the helmet is looking solid! One suggestion might be to slightly blur the planet in the background so it looks out of focus, even if just a bit. Right now the cat is in focus, the rocks behind it is out of focus, but then the planet is in sharp focus again. Might help to have the background a bit more consistent to really draw focus to the catstronaut. Really nice consistent colors to this!

#

@fervent kindle Hah, very nice, this Day 1 image is looking good! It’s cool to see all the elements you added together, and the lighting/coloration fits together nicely. One nitpick that stands out in the rock in the center of the background seems to have a dark edge around the sky beyond it that could be cleaned up. Nice job with the compositing!

#

@sweet cloak Nice work Muneeb, the color of the lighting seems to fit in with the scene pretty nicely. I think you could even enlarge the portrait more to make it a bit more prominent, and overlapping the background shapes might add some nice depth. Adding a little shadow towards the bottom of the shirt to draw focus on the light of the face might make him matching the lighting of the scene a bit more too. Looking good!

#

@shy wigeon Hah, very nice. I think this is looking pretty solid! The glow looks good, though you could soften up the area to the left of the shirt where the glow has a bit of a harder line. You could always add background elements like planets but I think what you have here is looking good!

@pure herald Cool design! this could also pass as a banner design 🙂 I would recommend placing the inner texture in the center of the dark frame. You can use the smart guides in Photoshop or the align tool to do that 👍

@crimson lynx oooh nice! The star is a great centerpiece for the badge. The composition seems to lean to the left a bit. Try to use vertical symmetry to align the elements. You can also use the prebuilt shapes to create your design 🙂

#

The resolution of the star seems to be pretty low too, have you scaled up a smaller image?

#

If you also use the text warp tool you can create a more consistent arch above the star

#

@pulsar sparrow now THAT'S a badass design! I believe it would be even better with an equally badass text in the center. I would totally go for a chiseled metal look!

#

@hearty wharf Ooh, this looks fantastic! Really great sense of dimension with the lighting, and the texture adds a really believable and interesting feel to it as well. Really solid work all around!

#

@cedar saddle Looking good! I like the really bold texture in this image. The metal looks great and I like the way the texture shows through the text making it look like it's actually printed on the fabric. Nice job!

#

@hidden pendant There's always so many settings and options to play around with for this kind of thing, hah. I like the blue-orange color scheme, and the way they blend together with that texture is really interesting. Looks good!

#

@violet nacelle This is so good! I love the sort of rounded glossy look of the interior part. Really great texture and presentation too, this looks like a real pin or something. Very nicely done!

#

@tawny bronze Nice job, I like the line designs within the badge shape. Has a futuristic feel and the shadow and light of the lines gives it a nice dimensional quality. Good work 😄

@steady bough ha, only slightly creep with those eyes and the dark background 😛

#

@fallow bough beautiful pattern and I like the debossed effect you have applied. Personally I would also add some imperfections to the texture but that's just a personal preference 😄

@foggy hill that style almost looks like it could belong in a super hero comic book 😄 - You did the right thing: the background is less saturated compared to the foreground, otherwise it would simply be too vibrant to look at. well done 🙂

@hearty wharf A nice mix of 3 dimensional and 2D pattern look on the great plate image! Nice work with the repeating elements. I think perhaps the shine on the bevel could be a bit more intense if you’re going for that metal look and feel. Nice work 👍

#

@short mica Very cool, nice nice elements going on with bevel and texture in this image. I really like the sharp shield-like shape of the whole thing. If you’re going for a contrast in texture between the two sides, the right side looks like it would be really fitting to have a more subtle brushed metal texture on it. Could look cool. Maybe a sharper image for the handle of the lightsaber on the right too, to fit it in with the sharpness of the rest of the image. Nice job!

#

@crimson lynx Nice! I like the hand drawn looks and texture of the logo, but perhaps it might help to use text and shape tools in Photoshop to get the design a bit more structured and consistent, since the text is a bit crowded in some areas. It’s always easier to start with those solid forms and modify it from there as you see fit, and you could still get that nice texture in there if you want. Just a thought! Nice work.

#

@uncut verge I like the colors in this, some really nice gradients! The textures of the stars looks really nice too. Nice job!

#

@oblique anvil These designs look good, they have some nice dimension. The yellow one doesn’t seem like metal, but it has a really cool quality on its own. Almost kind of gives me a 90s vibe, hah. I like the metal texture on the blue one. I think the bright highlights are really what sells the metal look, and if you wanted to add that manually I often find a color dodge on a clipping mask with a soft brush is a good way to punch up the brights. Either way these are looking solid!

#

@blissful wolf Hah, very cool! I like the badge design on the suit for the Day 1 challenge. I feel like some aspects of the suits could use a little more contrast via a levels adjustment, especially around the collar. It seems like the darks could possibly go a bit deeper which would match it nicely to the rest of the image. Great background on this!

#

@vague shuttle Very cool to see you building out all these different pieces! Some interesting gradients and shines on the armor too. It could be cool to try out some different textures to see how that affects it. Nice work!

#

@dire glacier This turned out really nicely, the pattern look great and the mock up looks solid! I like how the pattern of the blue shirt matches the badge, and the backgrounds do a nice job of popping out the design. Nicely done!

#

@storm wasp Hah, very cool. I like the texture on the robot. It could be nice to add a little more darkness/shadow on the rocks behind the robot, and/or brightening up the badge a bit just to separate the values so the badge reads better at a glance. Nice job putting these different challenges together!

#

@jaunty bough Really cool textures here. The shapes and reflections definitely give off that sci-fi look. I think that hexagon pattern always gives off that feeling. Nice work on the pattern!

#

@dim brook Hah, very nice Corgi armor, from the infamous corgi warrior. The shine is looking good to sell that metal look. It could even be cool to add a light metal texture to push it even further. The pattern looks good, nice work!

#

@proper cave Really cool, definitely gives off a sci-fi feeling! Was this all done in Photoshop? Almost looks like a 3D model mock up. Nice job either way, looks good!

#

@spring delta Ooh, all the red eyes on the green background is really interesting. Almost kind of makes me think of an alien or something. Maybe a hexagon background could push that sci-if feel even more. The eyes and the green background are a bit difficult to read at a glance, it might help to separate their values a bit since they’re both around the same level of brightness. Cool design 👍

#

@buoyant nova Nice clean design with this, and the pattern is looking good, nice work!

#

@mighty beacon Very interesting texture, kind of makes it look like polished wood. The shadow on the inset part really helps add some dimension as well. Looks good!

#

@dire lotus Challenge 3 is looking good! The colors and pattern on this heart design work really nicely together.

#

@sly tulip Hah, very cool. It’s the Scottish space force’s emblem. I like the fabric texture on the center designs too, makes the whole thing look like a fabric patch or something. It could be interesting to try and make the background design longer horizontal rather than taller. It might give off more of that “ufo” sci-fi vibe and allow the center designs to be even a bit bigger. Just a thought, looks good!

#

@bold valley I really like the background space choice for this Day 3 challenge! The badge shape and shield shapes work nicely together as well, and the drop shadows adds some nice dimension. It looks like the pattern on the shield shape goes off the sides a little bit in place (such as the bottom left) which might help to clean it up to give the shield a more solid look overall. Nice work on this design!

#

@tawny bronze I really like the color palette on this Day 3 challenge! It kind of has a softer more clam feel overall, like it could be the armor for the character in a kid’s book or something. I like the combination of the design lines with the moon patterns. The center moon graphic is a really nice iconic touch too. Really nice visual balance to the whole thing!

#

oh and it would be awesome to see those rivets in a straight line with uniform distance to the edge and each other 😉 . You can achieve this effect by creating a shape, setting the fill to none and using a dotted line for the stroke

@fervent kindle This is great! I really love the hand drawn aspects, really great shapes and personality to it. The texture adds a really nice element as well, and the text style is a great touch, well done!

#

@tacit condor Great dimension and lighting to this robot, the whole thing has a really nice 3D feel! It could be cool to see some sort of texture or grating in the mouth area to give it a bit more structure. This turned out great, very well done!

#

@bold valley Hah, I love the hair and personality to this robot. The lighting looks really nice too, some good dimension in there. Perhaps the hair pieces having a slight (since it’s a dark color) gradient might make them fit in with the rest of the image a bit more? Could be cool to add a bit of a cast shadow on the ground under the head too , unless he’s supposed to be floating of course. Great job!

#

@pine pecan Ooh, I like it! Really nice clean masking job on this robot! It seems to have pretty consistent lighting and texture which can be tough when compositing photos together, nice work. Really nice cohesive design and feel overall!

#

@young karma You nailed that fabric text on Ralph’s face! Hah, I love this badge. Really nice sort of aged look with the colors and texture too. Great design!

#

@sweet cloak Very nice! This robot looks great. Really nice shapes and style to it. The texture adds an interesting contrast as well. It has a lot of personality to it, nice design!

#

@young karma Awesome, glad you joined us! This is looking good! The masking is looking solid. I think you could perhaps do a levels adjustment on the portrait to increase the darks so they’re at least as deep as the planet in the background, and even maybe up the brights a bit to get the portrait to pop out even more. Nice work :D

#

@hearty wharf Very nice, I really like the old/rough metal texture on the robot, it gives it a really interesting feel. I wonder if a hint of a specula highlight would make it read a bit more as metal. Maybe just a little since the metal it so rough and worn looking. Really great design!

#

@fallow bough Nice Ken! Reminds me of Rosie from the Jetsons meets the fancy robot from Wall-E, hah. Nice work on the lighting, it’s got some nice from. Perhaps there could be a bit deeper of a shadow around the bottom white area around the wheel and the hands? They seem a little flatter in comparison to the rest. I like the smooth form of this robot, very cool!

#

@honest gorge Really nice work on the Day 3 challenge as well as the robot! I like the cartoony proportions of the robot. The badge shape on the watch looks great! I really like the way you overlaid the same general color of metal for the inter design and it still reads so well, the texture is a nice touch too. I think separating the bevel on the outside a bit more value wise could help. It looks good at the bottom due to the highlight, but seems a little flatter at the top. Maybe darkening down the bevel at the top just a bit could help make it look like it’s slightly more in shadow and therefore give it a bit more of a sense of dimension. Nice work on these!

#

@pure herald Great design on the robot challenge, really nice shapes! I like the design on the center of the body and mouth, adds nicely to that techy feel. The red/yellow color scheme works nicely, but it could be nice to make the repeated element of yellow a bit more pronounced in the eyes and on the top of the head. Since it’s on a white background maybe giving the glow on the top of the head a bit more of a deeper orange around the outside might help that bright center pop a bit more. And even making the whole white area of the eye a bit more yellow could be a good look. Might make the whole color scheme a bit more cohesive. Really nice job!

#

#

@tacit condor Well done! I can see a clear shape of the nebula and I like how you have included some highlights to simulate super bright stars 🙂 I would suggest leaving some parts of the picture as stars-only, especially some of the corners 👍

#

@mighty linden Great work, It looks like you have used a brush to simulate a bokeh effect. I see that you have used the brush to form some tendrils - you might want to check out the latest #🔨resources I posted 😉 maybe they could be a great addition

#

@late current Cool composition, I would suggest darkening the shadows in the background to bring up the contrast. Right now the stars are really bright just like the earth and the three space ships. But if everything has the same brightness you lose contrast.

#

@wet thistle aaaah, I believe I have spotted some of the Paul Trani lens flare brushes 😉 and this is exactly the right time to use them. JJ Abrams would be proud 😄 . It also looks like you have used a different technique to create the stars in the background. Have you used those lens flares as a tiny brush in combination with the scatter slider or is this a premade image? I lvoe the spiral in the center, just make sure to feather the edges a bit to make the transition smoother 🙂

#

@tacit condor looking at the second submission, you did the right thing and left some of the space without any nebula effects. The color scheme of this second submission looks really cool. Some of the stars have... interesting shapes 😉

#

your first submission is very colorful but the second and third version is more realistic. usually nebulas have a reduced color palette unless you are creating art for video games 😉

#

@proper cave this color scheme reminds me a bit of the old macOS wallpapers. Love it! 😄

#

@small drift Yes, the change is very subtle but most often the last 5% take the most time to get right. But if you do get them right they elevate your design to the next level which sets you apart from others, who don't spend that time to get the last 5% right 🙂

#

@fervent kindle I like how you have added some extra elements to add some texture to the clouds. The spiral in the upper left corner for example is a nice detail. There is however a small issue with that galaxy. The center part is technically overexposed but you have reduced the opacity. Now the previously white parts are rather dull and gray. I believe you have probably also used the Color Dodge effect for this galaxy. If so, try to reduce the "Fill" slider instead of the "opacity" slider 🙂 . This should fix this issue. There are 8 blend modes in Photoshop that behave differently when you play with the Fill slider instead of the opacity one. Color dodge happens to be one of them.

#

also one thing to keep in mind: the direction of the light.

#

it looks like the light is coming from multiple different sources.

#

I would recommend only using one key light (and some others as fill light maybe) to set the scene.

#

and don't be afraid to boost the brightness of the stars! Let them shine bright like a diamond. Shining bright like a diamond. We're beautiful like diamonds in the sky 😄

#

@honest gorge Well done, this is a very beautiful nebula 😄 . I like how you have used a reduced tone palette. Mostly purple, magenta and violet. If you'd like to add more structure to the nebula, check out the latest pro tip in the #🔨resources channel 🙂

#

@fallow bough Beautiful work - really like the contrast between the warm and the cool colors of the different nebula clusters 🙂 . This highlight right here is my favorite piece of this submission 🙌

#

I just love glowing things 😛

#

@pine pecan Woah, look at all those stars! I do like the color palette and the texture of the nebula 😄 . My suggestion would be to also leave some parts of the nebula layer blank to give it a more concise shape. You can also use the technique I showed in the protips channel 🙂 Well done!

#

@steady bough Really cool! This looks more like a loose cluster of nebulas... nebulae... nebulies...? anyway, the colors are very realistic, especially with the amber in-between the magenta and dark green. Well done 🙂

#

@dim brook Oooh boy, I hope they brought some oxygen, otherwise this will be a short wedding 😉 . I would suggest making the cars fully opaque, usually you shouldn't be able to see any stars through them 🙂

#

@mighty linden Nice to see a different logo on the badge 🙂 . By the way, I would totally use this texture for the entire background - much more interesting than the gradient if you ask me 😉

#

@thorn geyser right? It's crazy how many cool effects start with the most basic tools in Photoshop! And if you experiment even more with different filters you can get super rich and detailed textures. I highly recommend playing around with the difference clouds filter. I have also shared a pro tip showcasing that technique 🙂 . I like how you have used a desaturated color palette. It can be tempting to really go all in on the saturation but your version is more true to life

#

@supple canopy Beautiful colors 😄 especially the pink-to-blue transition on the left. It looks like you have some weird lines going through the image. I would perhaps remove them using the content aware tools

#

it also looks like there is a lot of grain in this nebula. I would suggest blurring it slightly using the gaussian blur tool. 0.1-0.5 px should be enough 🙂

#

@mighty beacon yeees! Difference clouds for the win! And they really do make a difference - like you said you get a lot of detail and substance if you refine the clouds like this. Nicely done 🙂

@hearty wharf Hah, I love it! Great contrast to the other robot in size and shape. The highlights sell that metal effect a bit more I think too. Really liking the asymetrical eyes!

#

@supple canopy Nice work on the chest piece Lynn! I really like how the texture difference makes the symbol pop out so much, it gives it a nice read. though it seems like the background texture shows through the badge piece, it might help to mask it out completely. It could even be cool to add a metal texture onto the badge to really sell that effect, or perhaps even brighten up the highlights a bit to give it that metal feel. It also looks like the airbrush in the top left isn’t fulled masked out. Really nice work on all this, very cool!

#

@magic rampart Looking good! I really like the feeling the texture on the yellow part give the badge. Makes for a really cool worn metal look. This might be more of a nitpick than anything, but I think the badge might look a bit more real if the blue was a bit darker and less saturated. Really nice design!

#

@wet thistle Nice work putting all these elements together! I love the heavy texture of the red and black rock, and how the robot still reads so nicely due to the value difference. Really nice design, great work on this!

#

@rare flower Nice work masking all these people! I wonder if desaturating them a bit, or even adding a cooling color filter might make them look like they belong in the scene a bit more? Nicely done!

Thank you @glacial path. I indeed used the brushes of Paul Trani for the lens flares 😄 . For the stars I used partly the technique of Val (I forgot the channel part 🙃 ), I did a Motion Blur on top and used in addition a star brush which Aaron Nash showed how to create (very easy) in one of his YouTube videos, in combination with the scatter slider. @young karma Love what you did with the colors on this portrait! It gives the whole portrait a really dramatic stylized look that I think works quite well. Nicely done 😄

#

@fast moth Nice work Camilo! I like the feeling of this robot character. I think you could push the lighting even more if you selected that small bottom segment on top of the base board and used a multiply layer and soft brush to add a bit of shadow as if the main body of the robot is casting a shadow below it. It could also help to do the same to the top of the main body as if the head is blocking some light too. Might give it even more dimension. Looks good!

#

@high rock Hah, very cool, I like this alien robot! The bevels give it an interesting almost metallic look. It could be nice to brighten its eyes up a touch with a masked levels adjustment or color dodge layer. Might give it a little more life. Nice job!

#

@dim brook Looking good CeCi! The nebula effect is looking solid and the color variation looks good!

#

@blissful wolf Ooh, great job on this suit! I like the variation in the colors and brightness of the stars on the suit. My only suggestion would be to separate the values of the figure and the background a bit more, since they’re currently a very similar value and both heavily textured so the read could be a bit cleaner. Maybe by darkening the background just a touch and blighting the suit a bit? Just a thought, nice work!

@proper cave Really great job on the nebula challenge! I really like the sort of cloudy effect your image has, as well as the really strong value contrast in the center. Really nice focal point and look to it!

#

@small drift Very cool! The polka dots are looking really convincingly on the suit. Really nice job, the placement and values of them looks solid. Also some really nice contrast of the suit against the background which makes it read really well. My only thought is that the edges of the leg gets kind of soft in some areas, it might help to sharpen the edge up a bit. Really nice job!

#

@fervent kindle Ooh, very cool! I love some of the texture you have going on in the nebula. The planet and astronaut are also really nicely put together. Even with how small the astronaut is they read very well against the darkness of the planet, and the lighting on the side of the planet adds a lot of interest. My only suggestion is that the astronaut and planet have great consistent lighting, but that doesn’t seem to affect any of the meteors on the left. I thought they may just be closer to the camera and not catching the same light, but I see that some are even behind the planet, which would make them massive. It might help to add a little light on the left of some of them too? Though maybe not too much since I like how strong your focus point is currently. Really nice work 😄

#

@pine pecan Looking good Harry! Nice colors and shapes going on with your nebula challenge. Also your Day 1 challenge looks great! Really nice job on the size variation and overlapping shapes, adds some great depth. Very nicely composited too! Solid challenges so far!

#

@steady bough Ooh, some really cool colors and shapes going on here! I really like your nebula shapes almost seem to add a sense of perspective which gives this image a really cool feel. Nice job!

#

@mighty linden Really nice work on the badge challenge! I really like the gradients you got, it adds a nice realistic feel to it with a sort of smooth/shiny look. I really like what you did with the center logo design too. I think the rough texture in the background adds some really nice contrast to the badge, but it could be nice to see a little more of it extend across the rest of the background. Looks solid!

#

@thorn geyser Looks good! Yeah, it’s always cool when you find something in Photoshop that can be so quick and easy to get a really nice effect from. This looks good, some nice color and value variation. I like the bright point in the center, it gives the image a nice little focus. Nicely done!

#

@mighty beacon Oooh, really cool! Kind of looks like it could be some sort of crazy alien galaxy or something, very cool color variation. When I see the smaller version in Discord I think its looking really good, but when I click the full version it seems like it “loads” more stars. They seem a bit intense and over powering due to everything being so bright and textured. I think it might balance out the image a bit more to lower the opacity slightly of the white small starts which might help the galaxy in the middle draw a bit more focus a bit more clearly. Just a thought. Really great effect!

#

@bold valley Hah, very cool. That shadow definitely grounds it a bit more in the scene! Though I think you could probably soften the shadow a bit more even. Maybe a slight gaussian blur? Looks good 😄

#

@short mica Very cool! Really cool colors on the nebular and I like the ships flying through the scene! It could help to have the ship layers on top so they’re not affected by the coloring of the nebular, since I imagine they’re much closer to the camera than then nebula. That way they might not look blown out. It could also help to soften the fire effect to make it more realistic. I even think a smudge tool could help with that. I use smudge for fire and magic effects often while painting with a soft round brush, 50% strength, and in the brush settings I check the box for “Scattering” and set scattering to around 10%. It could maybe give you a nice effect for that fire. Well done!

@hearty wharf These are great Tan! I love the galaxy hearts, really nice colors in that one too. The robot on the planet looks great! Really nice sense of 3D form on these with the light and shadow, very nicely done. I think that it might help to pop out the figure of the robot if you brightened up the background a bit. Here's a quick example that I think helps it read a bit more. Loving these challenges!

#

@ruby panther Looks good Shawn! Really nice colors going on, and I love the cloudy almost watercolor look of the nebula. My only suggestion would be to maybe increase the contrast on the planet because it looks a little flat and out of place compared to the other elements of the image. I think a bit more value and depth would help it match the high contrast of the rest of the image. Maybe something like this?

#

#

@compact pecan yeah, lighting objects in space is pretty difficult since you usually only have one very bright light source. I think you did a great job 🙂 I would just remove the white fringe around the jets to improve the composition 🙂

#

you can also try out the defringe filter instead

#

both should get rid of the white border 🙂

#

@supple canopy nice! I like how you took your original image and flipped it to mix things up 😄 . I just see some details which you could fix. Looks like you have removed some of the solar panels by mistake. Hopefully you are working with layer masks so this should be an easy fix

#

it also looks like there is a weird shadow on this planet. If you are actually going for a shadow, I would darken the colors instead of desaturating them 🙂

#

And finally, it looks like there is a weird border in the top right corner of your submission. Perhaps you can use the crop tool to remove that 🙂

#

Thank you for submitting your work!

#

@small drift Haha, this looks like a fun sidekick to have around 😄 . My suggestion would be to move the robot away from the rocks here and on to the flat ground

#

The drop shadow certainly helps to separate the robot from the background but such a shadow wouldn't be possible unless the sky is just a flat plane right behind the robot

#

@short mica I have noticed the earth in the bottom right corner. The idea of having it partially lit is really good but the night side currently looks very gray and monolithic. I would suggest using an actual image of the earth at night 🙂

#

@magic rampart ha, that robot has the same expression as me when I have to wake up early 😛 . I like the inner shadow and the texture you've applied. Because the shadow of the head is also at the top, it looks like the shape is actually debossed instead of embossed.

#

This is because the eye is used to the light from the sun which illuminates objects from the top.

#

and at the transition you could add a drop shadow to show that the head is sticking out 🙂

short mica
#

@glacial path👌 try to create shadows with paintsand control clicking the selection but the black paint allowed the background (stars) to show through..... Playing with highlights and shadows 🤷🏼‍♂️🙏

glacial path
#

the trick is to handle the glow and the opaque objects separately

#

One layer is just reserved for the glow and one is used for the opaque planet
