In order to improve a skill you have to get feedback from failure. You probably get worse because you get lazy and don't do what you would when playing vs better players

You can do that without directly facing better players. It's not the best thing, but to say you're incapable of improvement without better players is something I can't agree with here. Is it the best method to employ? Oh definitely. But is it the the only solution? No, there are others.
