Does PVP matching ever put you in an empty lobby or does someone else HAVE to also queue?

From my understanding, it's possible to get a PvP lobby to yourself. One way I can tell (not sure if it's an accurate method), my PC loads the map in the first minute of queve, and matchmakes after that, "Waiting for Players" until 5 minutes. If the timer goes past 5 minutes, it may mean that someone queved in my lobby is still loading the map and loot. So if I go in at 5 minutes, there's a small chance I'm alone

If you're trying to get a lobby to yourself, you can narrow down the servers you're using down to one. This may extend your Matchmaking time, but increase the chances of you not finding anyone else to put in your lobby

Unfortunately, EFT has destroyed some friendships because of loot and other issues. You can't trust anyone anymore. I think it started with the one-man show in PUBG. No. Grenades are balanced around their detonation times so those are fixed. You can’t cook a grenade. So you can bypass the pin sound by just holding it with the pin pulled.
