again scopes give less skilled players a way to seem better than they actually are. if they drop the scope and learn to engage an enemy at close range the game gets immensely easier its just how it is. it holds them up as a crutch would. if using a scope is how you play or you think youre a great pvp player then maybe this doesnt pertain to you but majority of the newer/lower-mid tier players use scopes because they are not that good at pvp and instead of getting better they just use a scope because shooting someone from a distance when they have no idea where you lets them possibly have a win when otherwise would not happen. AGAIN you can play how you want new or not.

Ill prob have more of an advantage because scopes are just ez mode and i have more game knowledge over a timmy. You dont need to think about anything because they have no idea youre looking at them. Now ive never played with you so i dont know your stats if you showed me 2 sets of stats and asked who do you think is the better player. The person with the holo is. You can easily have a high KD or SR if you never put yourself in harms way which is why someone with a holo with similar stats is just better.

Yes exactly, I completely agree on the holo part. The scope part however, not so much.
Give a timmie a scope, and he's going to do exactly what he did before. Majority of his fights are going to be cqc and he's overall stats will actually be reduced over using a holo.
It's first when he realises that he should alter the playing style to take advantage of the scope, that he suddenly is able to turn the tables, and get better per raid stat's over someone who's using a holo. (obviously to a certain degree, but regardless).
It's not a crutch, he doesn't magically gain power. It's because scopes remove the "sweaty" skill aspects of tarkov. Crazy movement, aim, grenade throwing madness.

Give a timmie a scope, and he will get destroyed.
Give a timmie a scope, and teach him how to use it. He will rule over the holos.

@gloomy ice regardless, I don't think you're treating this situation fairly. Why is it so important to measure the skill of a marksman in cqc? He's aware of his weaknesses, he'll make sure to never get himself into those situations.
Let's say two people start off brand new in tarkov. One decides to only use reflex sights, one only uses scopes.
after X amount of time, if you give both a reflex sight, the reflex sight guy is going to win. Give both scopes and the scope guy is going to win.
However, give the holo guy a holo, the scope guy a scope, and I bet the scope guy would win.

I guess im making this point based on my own/people i play withs skill. I get what youre saying there though. Based on what you pref you can be better at one than the other. I personally just see majority of players having an easier time with a scope than holo. Now lets take your example and throw me as one and some 500hr guy in there. We both have a scope. He has just as an easier time as i do with a scope killing people. So were at a decently higher killing count with a scope. Give us both a holo i wipe 4 players and he dies 10s into raid. The skill gap between both optics is insane.

And I still cannot see how the answer to that is anything but a no.
The scope supplements a playstyle, just as how a holo supplements it's own playstyle.
I can equally say that a holo is a crutch for people who can't fight using tactics, and rely on being close to the enemy to win fights. From my point of view it's a pointless problem. It's not a problem! Neither is a crutch, they are merely supplements to playstyles.

Hell, why aren't we talking about thermals?

I don't think so. Again, thermals have their own set of flaws, regardless of how overpowered they might seem.
The cost of the thermals is the main issue. The strength of the scope doesn't outweigh the cost, you're not going to be surviving infinite amounts of raids using a thermal, eventually you will see yourself falling, probably to a holo guy who happens to cross paths with you at close range, where the thermal just can't stand it's ground.
Just like anything else. Thermals have it's own corrolating playstyle, they're not crutches, it's not aim assist.

You can do the same for literally anything.
Are marksman rifles crutches for people who can't use shotguns?
Are helmets crutches for people who can't avoid getting hit?
Are fragmentation grenades crutches for people who can't use flash grenades?
The list goes on....

As a reflex sight player, you should be aware of the advantages a scoped player has, and you should expect them to use those advantages actively in an engagement. You then have to find the player's weakness and exploit that to secure the win.

idk, appart from taking the shot, I won't be any different. I'd use a rangefinder as binoculars, I'd move in areas where ranged weapons are at a disadvantage. Customs for example I'd probably try to move through the construction parts in the middle of the map.
Maybe go on streets, and walk building to building where scopes are at an inherit disadvantage.

Like even for myself i know how much of an advantage i get using a scope vs not. So now you give it to a less skilled person. Still an advantage. If i use a scope for like a week and try and pvp with a holo i have a hard time til i get back into it because the scope i was using was holding up my killing skills

Then suddenly the cold war rolls around, the old prop planes have been switched for supersonic jets with radar systems and missiles, it's no longer about who can do the most crazy air moves, now it's about who has the best tactics and can defeat their enemy at range without them ever knowing you were there.

Well, he's an awesome ww2 plane pilot, but the dude sucks in anything modern.

At his prime, he was the BEST pilot, he is the goat of planes, but... with the new tech, he's no longer on top, the playing field has been levelled, and the new dogs can take him out in a heart beat.

Right now, he's no longer the best pilot, far from.

So for tarkov, what's a good player?
The meta always shifts, the conditions are never the same from update to update. New tech comes out etc. You can't compare a guy on a 30hz screen to someone on a 144hz.

So assume everyone are playing on whatever setup they've decided on with unlimited money. No other rules.
Who would be the best?

I don't know. Depends on your definition of the best. Could be whoever has the highest survival rate, whoever get's to kappa first, whoever has the highest pmc K/D, whoever has the highest PMC Kills per raid, kills per hour, whoever wins a turnament. List goes on.
In tarkov, it's near impossible to tell who's the best, it completely depends on what your paramaters are.

I personally have no clue what makes for a good player in tarkov. When I play I find a balance between different paramaters that make for fun gameplay. That's what I strive for.

I've been going down deeper and deeper into the sniping rabbit hole, and I've come to the realisation that the "ultimate" sniper bullet is SNB, or M855A1. I will come to M61... just wait

M855A1 has is one shot capable through class 4 at a range up to approx 180m. Over that you're beginning to gamble a bit, closing down towards 80% and lower as you increase distance. At 200m you reach 65% chance of penning iirc.
Meaning, that M855A1 actually does everything that you need it to do, as a headshot bullet at sub 200m distances. It's awesome, super high bullet velocity makes hitting stuff a lot easier.

SNB on the other hand, is capable at basically any distance you throw at it, and has the added benefit of being a thorax killer as well, which is convenient if you mess up a couple shots on moving targets.

The downside to SNB is the lower velocity, but more crucially, the SVD.
Low ergo, high recoil, and... the noise that makes Sturman very happy.

If the noise isn't a factor between the two any more... I think the SVD might be capable of claiming the spot as the ultimate.

*I've looked aside from M61, as the bullet is only obtainable once you complete shooter born in heaven, however once unlocked I think it's clear that M61 is the king, and is only worse than SNB slightly in terms of flight time. *
As a sniper the bullet should be obtained as quickly as possible, but until then, the question stands, what bullet is the second best?

If the bullet accomplishes these requirements, then it's a matter of comparing strengths and weaknesses of the bullet and it's compatible weapons to find the best setup.

At 100m M855a1 dies.
At 150m M80 and APM reaches 63% chance of 1 shot kill, being.. well, not good enough. CBJ is going strong at 80%

Then there's a jump up to 200m, unfortunately. I'd love to have a 175m as well :/
At 200m M80 falls to 53%, CBJ surprisingly is at 64%, APM has died.

Which now sees us coming to a sort of conclusion.
CBJ is still 1 shot capable, at 64%, a beast of a round, and it's accuracy is not the downfall of the bullet. CBJ wins majestically over M855a1 by a mile.
CBJ is better than M80, it is beaten by M62 by 14%, but I think that's a fair trade-off for not having tracers, and being a generally much more "workable" caliber.
M61 is still the clear champion, so once unlocked it should be the only bullet used at these ranges.

I'm honestly quite blown away by the fact that CBJ is the bullet that fights SNB for the second place.
but the answer is clear.

To make a decision for what to use?
CBJ: High ergo, low recoil, low bullet velocity
SNB: Low ergo, high recoil, high bullet velocity.

They're opposites. If you can deal with the low bullet velocity the CBJ is the way to go, if you can't then SNB is your only choice.

@mighty trout Alright so this thing is going to be a competitor to the SR-25 assuming you can get it on the flea.
It's probably going to have similar attachments to like a G28. I can't imagine this thing taking too many fancy handguards etc. it's just not that type of weapon. So either you're lucky with the mods it already have, or you're out of lock.
The real issue is the fact that it's not an AR style platform. i.e the stock doesn't house the buffer tube. I'm guessing it's going to have a fair bit more kick to it because of that.
I just don't see this thing beating the SR-25 in any sort of way.
And once you reach level 15, you won't have access to "meta" mods, unless you're fine with the thing setting you back around 600k
Although a cool weapon, I can't see it being all that usable.
What sort of requirements do you have for it anyways?
