Always remember that ammo is way more important than guns, so choose guns based on what ammo you can buy.
Early on your best options are:
UMP-45s (buy Knives at Fence and trade to Peacekeeper) with FMJ is the best option, but the most costly,

Mosin from Prapor with FMJ is great if you like bolt actions,

KEDR-B with PSV or PPSH with LRNPC are both good for close-range high-damage guns you can spray legs or face with.

If you can find good 545 (PP, BP, BT, BS) or 762x39 (PS, PP, BP) then those are also options.

Ammo has 2 qualities that you should focus on - Damage and Penetration.
Damage is the damage done to unarmored parts of the target.
Penetration is the ability of an ammo type to get through particular tier of armor.
Both matter, but you need to know what side of the spectrum your ammo leans.
If you're using penetration forward ammo - you know you can aim for head and chest.
If you're using damage forward ammo, you should be aiming for legs, face, or other exposed areas.

If you want to guarantee profit, you can always enter the cycle of scavving and offline-PMCing/Practice Mode while your scav is on cooldown. Scavving can only make you money. Practice mode is great for learning maps, learning loot runs, and getting good at killing scavs and scav bosses, and other core mechanics like hipfire. It's literally impossible to lose any money doing this, so it just stacks up while you learn a lot

All the maps are good, if that is what you mean. It just depends on your questing progression and levels, equipment, etc.

The best way to learn this game is to go into off-line solo raids and explore the maps. Then watch a guide on a map, generally pestily is a good choice. Learn where items and spawns are.

People playing this game have 100s-1000s of hours of information crammed into their heads and they play with that information, and they all have goals. Sometimes those goals overlap with others pathings and sometimes it just pvp.

No problem. Just knowing wher eyou are and hwere other spawns are will help you watch out where potential dangers will come from, and that info is the first step.

-If you want to guarantee profit, you can always enter the cycle of scavving and offline-PMCing/Practice Mode while your scav is on cooldown. Scavving can only make you money. Practice mode is great for learning maps, learning loot runs, and getting good at killing scavs and scav bosses, and other core mechanics like hipfire. It's literally impossible to lose any money doing this, so it just stacks up while you learn a lot
-Hipfire is exceptional, using a flashlight and hipfiring is a hugely important mechanic to start practicing. Use practice mode
-Stop running everywhere - sprinting is very loud and gives you away, it provides a lot of opportunity to ambush you. Whenever you're in high-traffic areas, be very disciplined about when you sprint.
-Have a goal in mind every raid, plan a route and try to stick roughly to it. If you notice a route failing 3 times in a row, change your route. This makes it easier to keep track of which routes actually work and which are reliably dangerous.
-Only right hand peak if you have a choice. It exposes far less of you than peeking left.
-Positioning is everything. In combat, frequently reposition, this is just one of the reasons map knowledge is critical and should be built and practiced ASAP. Pick your fights, don't be afraid to retreat
-Ammo is more important than guns, but you need to know how to use what ammo you have. High damage vs High penetration is a critical difference - use an ammo chart.

The best way to learn this game is to learn map layouts, what key objectives are, where quest items/objectives area, and where AI and other players generally are. And the way you play a raid and read information such as sounds of shooting or lack thereof will all depend on this information together. Game is really fun to play for thousands of hours because of this

@timber stirrup I know a thing or two about the quirks of weapon builds, call me whenever and I'll tell you. The reality is that nearly nobody actually knows exactly how each component works, so if you want to really understand how weapon building can be used to get you the most bang for the buck, or just the most bang in general, I can help out a lot with that :)
The sort of it is though, that ergo and recoil aren't connected, you have to look at them separately, ergo and weight are also interconnected, 1kg equals about -10 ergo.
Recoil is very dependent on RPM, among other factors. Some weapons have better recentering times as well in single fire. It's all pretty niche stuff. But if you're interested let me know, I love to let people know the wierd quirks of this game.

@abstract remnant basically I'm playing as a sniper, so that one shot headshot is all I care for, which has made me spend weeks trying to understand extactly how bullets really work in this game, it's so much too it.
However for someone who just cqb sprays and prays, all that really doesn't matter, and you'll very easily be able to find bullets that are "good".

In reality, there's probably nobody who actually knows everything there is to know about ammo in tarkov, but some people knows parts of it.
I'm in the.. maybe 10 or so people who know the ballistics part of bullets, however I don't really know how damage works other than this bullet can 1 shot, this bullet can't. etc.
Damage spreading and stuff like that is another really complicated aspect that I personally don't really care much for. NoFoodAfterMidnight is really good at that stuff, but is probably more lacking in other areas.

You really have to be pretty nuts to bother doing this much research into something as silly as bullets in a video game.

Basically, in no specific order, this is what you want to be doing:
The first priority should always be to not be seen. If nobody sees you, they can't shoot you.
only run if you're getting shot, if not, NEVER run, just walk.
If you're in a fight that you might die in, run away, far away. Then continue your raid. In other words, if people are shooting at you, there's a chance of dying, and so you should run.
Never be in a position where you can't "run away", as in, you'll probably be dead by the time you get out of view of the enemy. Stick to trees and terrain, and in buildings, try to not get stuck in rooms as you won't be able to run away.
Do note* I never say anything about not hunting people down, or avoiding combat. All I'm saying is that if the enemy is shooting at you, you should run away.

The biggest disagreement I have is the map knowledge part. Yes map knowledge is part of it, but using a map can largely supplement that if you know what you're doing. As in, you understand how to use a map and it's a bit more to it than people first think.

When to use scavs and offline mode, I think you should only use scav mode if you're having a horrible day and just want to make some money through any means, or waiting for your teammates to extract if you died early. In all other situations you're better off doing PMC raids, as you actually learn something from those raids instead of just running through brainlessly.

Right hand peaks vs left hand peaks are definitely a thing to bring up at some point however now at this basic of a level I don't think it's going to play much of a difference at all. It's just another thing he has to take into account, which he doesn't really need at this point. The simpler the better.

lastly, for the ammo, it's so much more to it than just "ammo chart". Actually digging through the whole thing isn't something I'm telling new players to do, however adding that as a notation* on the side would be beneficial, as working those charts is pretty technical, and you have to know what you're doing to make any sense of it. I honestly believe that you can get really far regardless of what ammo you're using, hyper fixating on what ammo to shoot isn't something to worry about when you're first starting out, and is more of an intermediate thing imo :)

I find so few people know how to use a map.
People have very different opinions on scavs, but I think a lot of new players learn a ton from their scav raids, so I disagree with you there.
And ammo is something I struggle with introducing. But I like making mention of the importance of the difference between damage and pen. Just to plant the seed so they can look more into it later.

More knowledge of the map. Less risk involved so they can pay attention to details of the map more.
Loot information is big. A lot of new players have no idea where to loot, and scav let’s them take risks to look in new places.
Just having something that people consider a “free” gearset gives them confidence and experience, which are both hard to come by early on.
I truly don’t think they’re “brainless” runs

Before I would agree with you on this, but now with scav karma it's kinda just to not kill anything at all. Maybe if you're really struggling, sure, but... I think it's mostly a waste of time. If you're struggling that badly, you're better off going back to the drawing board.

you have to be very careful with what you're doing there. My way is more of an appetiser. It's like "See? these things actually work", and then you can come learn more afterwards. Nobody wants to just sit and listen to me ramble on about how to snipe for 6 hours, because that's really how long it takes. Sniping is a super theory heavy playstyle, where as W keying is very muscle memory style.

Always remember that ammo is more important than guns, so choose guns based on what ammo you can buy.
Early on your best options are:
UMP-45s (buy Knives at Fence and trade to Peacekeeper) with FMJ is the best option, but the most costly,

Mosin from Prapor with FMJ is great if you like bolt actions,

KEDR-B with PSV or PPSH with LRNPC are both good for close-range high-damage guns you can spray legs or face with.

If you can find good 545 (PP, BP, BT, BS) or 762x39 (PS, PP, BP) then those are also options.

Depends. I think it helps get the muscle memory down for recoil control, and helps you get fighting experience. Both of which will help.
It’ll probably reinforce some bad habits, but overall, for newer players, I think it’ll help a lot
