The game is in a late wipe stage now, less but more heavily geared players. Imo a good time to start the game as you don't run into people as often and you want to be somewhat prepared for when the game wipes in a month or two ish. There is an event going on this weekend tough so a lot of people playing at the moment.

I'd go for the cheapest version of the game to see if you like it, try to learn the ropes a bit so you are somewhat prepared for the start of next wipe. You can always upgrade your version of the game later if you do like it and/or there is a sale going on (usualy Christmas and May 9th for the Russian national holiday)

Take note of what ammo is available to you and what armour most players are wearing. Most players this time of wipe are running class 5 body armour and class 4 helmets so a bolt action Mosin with LPS is still likely going to secure a headshot kill, in other cases remember that no armour in the game covers the legs so you can easily blow out their kneecaps with high damage/high rate of fire ammunition.

So either try your luck with a mosin (scope reccomended) or get yourself a kedr-b or mp 153, load it up with PSV/SP7/SP8 or magnum buckshot respectively, aim low and magdump. Also don't forget to wear a headset, new players tend to underestimate just how much impact wearing one has whereas more experienced players would rather go in without a helmet than without ears.

well a good thing to note if you want to make no noise is if you are not overweight (kg number is not yellow or red) and you are not stepping on wood/metal/gravel and you crouch walk you will make 0 noise. i get a lot of my unaware player kills by knowing the map and knowing where my opponents are when given sound queues. for example when im in black room on labs and i hear glass break i know exactly where that room is and i know exactly how to peak into it without him seeing me and i end up getting an easy pick due to my patience and keeping my distance, 100% knowing he wont be able to hear me. this game is heavily game sense/map knowledge reliant which only comes with time

Use the (sniper) variant and use the WWII scope mount for it, there are mounts to put better optics on them but by the time you get those you're probably better off using an SV-98, cheap and easy to make a half decent bolt action build with that and almost as cheap as the mosin.

Prapor sells them at trader level two, other than that have a look at Fence from time to time but keep in mind that his equipment will probably be overpriced and in need of repairs. Being at max traders makes you tend to lose sight of what is and isn't available to low level players. Speaking of Fence, Peacemaker has a barter for an UMP in exchange for knives, Fence often has those in stock so keep an eye on that. The UMP loaded with FMJ ammo is one of if not the strongest weapon available early wipe but this late in the wipe it's not that viable in PVP anymore. Still good against scavs tough.
In general it's probably better to either avoid PVP or to play in a squad (like in the LFG channels in this discord) untill you unlock the flea market at level 15, try to stick to scavs in the meanwhile. PvP mostly boils down to what ammo you have available to you so in general leg meta will be your best choice if you can't avoid PVP untill then.

One other alternative is an AK 74 chambered in 5.45 since good to viable ammo (BS > BT > BP > PP) is plentiful on woods, AK's in 7.62 and SKS (remove the rear sight for a better sight picture) are also good early wipe but don't hold up that well in PvP when almost everyone is wearing class 5 armour.

Once you do get the flea try to get your hands on an armour and weapons repair kit as trader repairs can get expensive fast, it probably isn't worth doing this anymore this wipe as prices have skyrocketed but keep it in mind for next wipe (soon™).

You'll need to level up the sniper rifle skill for later quests and 762 LPS is still viable end wipe so I'd still encourage you to do it next wipe and practice this one but mostly I recomend sticking to leg meta, your best choices available are the PPSH (use LRNPC from Jaeger and drum mags), Mp 153 and Kedr-B (PSV also from jaeger). And yes I mean kill scavs. Don't wory too much about practicing PvP as the next wipe puts everyone on an even playing field.

PMCs will have helmets much more often and bigger bags
Behavior is big - scavs are much less careful
Voice lines are important, as a scav you can hit F1 if you see another player to do a scav voice line, if they’re also a scav it’s customary to voice line back

So I just started playing tarkov this week (coming from console gaming for 15+ years) and also having to get used to kbm, what’s the best advice for improving mechanically and mentally for this game

for mechanics you can play in offline raids factory. set AI Scavs to horde mode, pick a loadout that you would bring into raid, and kill as many scavs as you can. focus on point firing (no ads) and landing headshots. you should be looking to kill 20-30 scavs with headshots fairly consistently. try using different stances, using sound to track the scavs, learning their spawn locations, leaning, learning the map, learning how the damage system works, the different calibers and bullets, learn how to expose your body to scavs (they will shoot what they can see, so if you peek your head your chance to get headshot just skyrocketed vs exposing your whole body), etc... for mental preparation if you have gear fear run factory raids online and focus on getting into combat with PMCs. you should do this consistently until you become desensitized to dying and most importantly desensitized to dying to bullshit like desync and the seal team 6 scav who headshots you from across factory with a pistol. if you find you don't get desensitized to dying and losing your gear after dozens of games it may never happen and if continues to bother you then you might need to find a different game.

Ammo has 2 qualities that you should focus on - Damage and Penetration.
Damage is the damage done to unarmored parts of the target.
Penetration is the ability of an ammo type to get through particular tier of armor.
Both matter, and it's most important that you know what side of the spectrum your ammo leans.
So if you're using penetration forward ammo - you know you can aim for head and chest.
If you're using damage forward ammo, you should be aiming for legs, face, or other exposed areas.

The reason is because those guns have the best possible ammo you can use early on (except 762x39 PS which is very common to find on scavs).

My favorite is the UMP-45 before level 15, easy to control, easy to modify, and does a lot of blunt damage through armor if you don't hit headshots.

oh well tbh its pretty late into wipe to start on tasks but usually the way to get good ammo types is through either peacekeeper for m80, m62, m855a1, or from prapor for ak ammo types. for rn just use PSV and a kedr and leg meta em

considering youre level 7 you probably wont be able to have access to the best of the best gear. however im max level traders and still find myself sometimes running PSV ammo with a kedr which a level 1 can get lmao its just so good. hit the legs w psv and its back to the lobby for them

money =/ better gear it mainly comes from loyalty levels from traders

Yes for me, scoping with 2-8x+ causes fps drops cause of double rendering so you need a good base fps

I generally like playing at a minimum of 70 and it feels really good at 110

My old pc running 3080 and 9900k did about 120 on woods + 70-80 on streets

upgraded to a 7800x3d and has helped a lot
