Going to factory overall isn't recommended unless you have tasks there or if you have money / gear to waste. Just play the game normally, get used to map rotations for next wipe, and fight when presented with the chance to do so

^ It really isn't unless you know what you're doing. I recommend learning on customs or some other map, ones that have early game tasks ideally. It will benefit you much more in the long run than spamming factory and dying to shotguns left and right while learning very little. Learning PMC rotations, spawns, and valuable loot spots is much more beneficial to a beginner than raw pvp. Pvp is nice and all but means nothing if you can't progress. The more you progress and learn in the game, the more you'll learn to pvp because you'll be forced to do so via tasks.

300 hours is not that much in the grand scheme of things in this game. I recommend just practicing normally, but if you have money to burn you can keep going factory to practice. Map knowledge is a major element in winning fights

I'd guess they are saying that because they learned how to play the game when the only map in the game was factory. Factory pvp is unlike pvp on any other map in the game. You may be able to mechanically become better through it, but that's only half the battle. A very large portion of pvp is using the environment to your advantage and understanding where players will most likely be, where they most likely want to go, and how they travel from point A to point B. This part of pvp can not be learned through factory as it is information that changes from map to map.

I figured that there would be a universal standard for behavior in combat which I could learn by hammering my head repeatedly against Factory, such as intuitively peeking, shooting, moving from cover to cover and flanking

But so far all I've learned is that if I peek, whether left-hand or right-hand, I'll just get BP rounds into my chest lol

nah the environment is one of the biggest aspects of pvp. A very good piece of advice often given is to reposition because it is so helpful for resetting the fight and getting the first shot. Effective repositioning comes with map knowledge and factory does not teach you how to play customs. Other players on other maps will be repositioning and moving as well. Factory doesn't have much space to move and you develop a habit of tunnel vision. Factory is also just a straight meat grinder, everyone W keys fights. It also has the most offset balance of gear on any map. You have level 5s with just a pistol and you have level 60s with t6 armor, absolutely no in between. Therefore your chances of being outgeared in a fight are much higher, which means more deaths, which is more roubles lost as you mentioned and a lack of motivation to continue playing the game.

That's one reason map knowledge is important. You know where people will likely be and can play around that fact. Scout out the area before you move in is one possibility, but it's however you feel most confident in playing it
