Not sure if this is the right place but I’m in search of some advice -
A little bit of a backstory; I’ve been smoking weed and staying up quite late and not really focusing on my studies.
I’ve signed up to take a class on IT Professionals, basically covering all of computers and what you can use them for (Coding, Virtualization, GNU Linux, Windows, Hardware, etc.) and I want to get started today on refreshing my ability to look at and write code with enough skill to get started in this class which takes place in a month.

If anyone has words of wisdom or some sort of advice that may be able to help me you can shoot me a dm or reply to this message as anyone else could.

For reference I’m using Fedora 40 with a Ryzen 7 3700x and 2060 Super in a prebuilt machine made by CyberPowerPC.

Machine should be fine, try to find some simple katas which can help your coding if you already know a little. Without knowing your background it'll be a bit difficult to guide you though

You can check out programming games like Elevator Saga, Code Combat, CodinGame.

A lot of that will be either Python or JS.

Lets start with my elementary background and progress further -
I was introduced to computers from a young age, this computer being a Thinkpad of some kind given to me by my school, me and my friends would mess with the computers and get them to do certain things such as bipass dino (A program used to make sure kids were behaving on they’re machines).
Forwarding to HS years I’ve taken Computer Science and AP Computer Science, I passed Computer Science with a 70-75% and failed AP Computer Science with a 58%.
I heavily enjoy watching SomeOrdinaryGamers, Mental Outlaw, and Eric Parker on YouTube and these sorts of channels are the only ones that interest me because of they’re Hacker/ Computer Science esk background.
Going into my Sophomore year of HS I started to get deep into the Edward Snowden anti gov specticule and got the book made by him, I’ve loved reading about these sorts of instances heavily.

Sorry for typing so much just trying to give my full background here.

During Computer Science we mainly learned the basics of python and how to make screens and shapes appear on screen, we made games and that’s about all.
Later into the year of AP Computer Science we had a final product that was based on whatever we wanted it to be, everyone else in the class was making games, I didn’t know what to make. On the second to last day in the class I made a Port Scanner as I called it that scanned you’re network/ IP address for open ports (However that works, I couldn’t even do that again today).

Is it possible to connect metaploitable 2 VM as a Wazuh agent? I've been trying to get it set up on Wazuh as one of the agents, to make logs of threats, but the connection doesn't work

I'm guessing here, but I think that metasploitable VM does not come preconfigured with a network. If I recall correctly (maybe) you have to set the network up via your hypervisor, then set your VM up manually to run either DHCP, or set a static IP. Anyone here is free to correct me on this, I just woke up and I may be incorrect.

Well, I have no interest in the data on the laptop. I just checked once out of curiosity. In terms of informing them, no, but they know that I have a device that belongs to them. For me, it just shows how sloppy this company is. They did not ask for their laptop back or even remove my access, which for me is a disaster ( Bad information security ).

Sometimes things fall between the cracks. By accessing the company laptop after your termination, you've opened yourself to some level of liability. Informing them is more of a protection for yourself, as it shows you've conducted a level of diligence trying to return their property.

Strictly speaking not really any of them, but it's a good idea to learn at least one language well enough for you to use it for general purpose. Whether that's C, Javascript or Python or something else entirely is less relevant.

Besides that it's a good idea to know your way around in languages like Python, bash and powershell.

Virtual machines, especially those running Windows, do not load properly when I try to start them. After the download, the screen goes black in the web browser and the machine becomes unresponsive. Virtual machines running Linux work correctly only windose ???

Hi I got a simple but weird scenario from an issues report that i study
Can someone explain and tell me what kind of severity level it would get and why if its even a vulnerability of the site? its a weird xss that is non-persistent and only displayed on the user's side and session. a username input can be a payload that will run in the dom after submission but the user would have to do interceptions, changes to requests first thus a malicious exploit can only happen if an attacker makes a website that automatically does this process on the victim's computer. the injected site is then displayed to the user.

Just for coding stand-alone? A laptop for 200-300 bugs will do his job. No brand question. More a question of the hardware and what you are planning to do with it now and perhaps in the future.

Any laptop with minimum of i5 or ryzen 5 along with integrated graphics, 8gb ram would do the job... Don't go below this spec else you will have very slow pc specially if you will need to open multiple tabs for debugging and research during your development.

I just got the Hash Cracker badge and I got so excited but none of my friends or family understands that this is a big step. I'm also a very big introvert and I'm anxious while writing this. Ran into this right now and I just had to share it with a security-oriented community 😁
A couple things came to my mind (apart from the service provided, which I find nifty/nice, this is on board of a train, delivering stuff from the bar to your seat):

• I like the UX, privacy-wise that it's stated in plaintext where the QR-code shall point to, so you can cross-reference whether it's malicious or not
• It's an OSINT vector: In case somebody is shooting selfies on this train and in the background a QR-code is readable, with the timestamp together you have full information (the QR code includes the train, coach (== which section on the train) and seat number! that's also why it's blackened in this pic)

The instructor for the classes I'm taking right now suggested a Core i5 with 16gb minimum for virtual machines. If you want to run VMs, you'll be much better served by prioritizing RAM over clock speed. And yes, refurbished/renewed is the way to go. You can find some great deals on Amazon -- although of course you have to do your due diligence and find a third party seller that won't shaft you -- for systems that would otherwise cost upwards of $7K.

I got an i7 16GB Elitebook 840 from them two years ago and never had a single problem. It still runs great.

I'm torn between two laptops. The first one is a Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen 4 with an Intel i7-1355U processor, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 14" WUXGA display, and FreeDOS (model: 21HD0016TX 002). The second one is an HP Elitebook 845 Gen 10 with an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor, 64GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB SSD, 14" IPS display, and Windows 11 Pro (model: 8A3T0EAW02). Which one do you think makes more sense?

My first question is, why do you need 64GB of RAM? 16GB is the norm nowadays, so 32GB would be way more than enough.
My second question is, the first model is shipped with FreeDOS? Are you sure you want that? I'm all for an old school DOS system, but man, it's not a normal graphical interface as you expect, unless you know it and love it, then I'd say go for that.

Personally I'd install a Linux Distro no matter what it ships with. I'd go with Intel, but I'm old school, AMD is also really good.

You booted from an ISO, a live boot and you get the system to testing. You have to install it on the hard disk. Otherwise, you will still boot again from the ISO next time because the Hard Disk doesn't have any system installed on it

Most of the distros provide an installer GUI when you boot into with Live Boot, following which you get the system installed on the Hard Disk

WIth this one, you have to do it manually. The Arch way lol
