I'd expect everyone looking for a job in cyber to have a home lab of some sort, whether it's spare computers, a bunch of RPis, networking kit, VMs, some kinda cloud environment, or a mix. It's important that people are able to communicate their abilities, whatever resources they use; but of course, certs by themselves aren't going to cut it; and for some employers they do list some certifications as preferred qualifications, but everything is negotiable

That's not what I said at all. Every level is tough right now, and demonstrating knowledge and ability is more crucial than certs. Certs are very often a client/customer requirement( SOC2/ISO27k1/etc), and can put significant strain on someone to afford out of their own pocket.

If there's an entry level cert that is in your budget, spend the bare minimum. But chasing certs to get a job puts someone in a worse situation to no gain.
