When using something like John, we specify that the format of the hash we're providing is whatever the format is (ie raw). In this room, I'm using what I understand is a hexadecimal hash (ie a bunch of numbers & letters up to f) but when I try to use trusty John to crack a hash, I need to tell john that it's something like raw-md5 & then proceed to give it a hexadecimal hash...

Am I misunderstanding binary vs hexadecimal is in this context...?

Sure. Just copying one of the inputs for a previous answer in this vm, I used the following command:
john --format=raw-sha1 --wordlist= /usr/share/wordlists/rockyou.txt ~/John-the-Ripper-The-Basics/Task04/hash2.txt

The hash in that hash2.txt file is the following:
1A732667F3917C0F4AA98BB13011B9090C6F8065

So I'm confused why I'm telling John that the format is raw-sha1 when it looks awfully hexadecimal to me (if that makes sense)
