I am super exicted for new laptop on Wednesday, 2025 Asus Zephryus G16 with 5070ti c:

finite basalt
#

like getting me to sleep was a diabolical piece of work, had to drive me round for a good hour or two before I'd sleep and even then I'd wake up suddenly demanding warm milk

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

Since this actually has a proper mux switch I should have a significantlly better time in Linux one again

finite basalt
#

and am giving my work laptop back later today I believe

rapid merlin
finite basalt
sinful moon
#

No but it doesn't have a mux switch so AMD+Nvidia Optimus switching is kinda crazy

finite basalt

I have a 2021 Asus Zephryus G15 with 3070 so this is actually a pretty direct upgrade, but design refresh, OLED screen, lots has changed

last harbor
#

I wish to go back to my previous lives tbh

finite basalt
#

I'm sticking with my G15 5520 for a few more years I reckon

#

and G5 745 for light workloads

last harbor
#

I use different devices for different purposes

finite basalt
#

yeah same here

#

It's disgusting how many laptops I'm going to have in my house by next week

sinful moon

yeah it just was finally time and I wanted to get this done before tarrifs. Yeah this is just my pesonal home gaming laptop/main

I just can't tell you how freaking excited I am to have Linux on my main device again

finite basalt
#

I've:
HP G5 745
Dell G15 5520
Toshiba Satellite L10-333

and for work an XPS 15 7th gen but I'll hand that in soon, start a new job and get two laptops from them 🤣

last harbor
vernal comet

i can only see that i have more than 1k points because of my rank

the toshiba I got off my grandad and don't really use but is there more as a test device, the hp I bought second hand when I had loads of issues with the dell

I'm kind of a sucker for gaming laptops that are like "macbook but for gaming" so premium and thin and light and not G4M3R aesthetic at all

boreal scarab

Trust us, stay far away from Dell and HP

safe oxide
#

Go with lenovo

boreal scarab

Go Acer, Lenovo, or Asus, or something else. Those 3 are my absolute go to

safe oxide
#

Or acer

boreal scarab
#

Lenovo and Asus are my top 2

safe oxide
finite basalt
#

acer I don't like because of build quality

sinful moon
#

and yeah Asus is lovely, Acer I can't speak much of since I haven't owned one since 2012

finite basalt
#

lenovo are good as long as you reinstall the os from scratch, I don't trust their software after the adware and spyware incidents

rapid merlin
#

I have Lenovo

finite basalt
#

acer do have some nice laptops but generally I'd say they feel flimsier

sinful moon
#

Acer never comes up in recommendations these days, I'd probably pass on them

finite basalt
#

see I've never had to deal with HP support because my second hand laptop's never had any problems

boreal scarab
finite basalt
#

yeah for sure

sinful moon
#

where as Asus has acented to being easily one of the top tier

finite basalt
#

like asus is top tier from what I've heard

#

razer are apparently decent support wise too tbf
but I can't vouch for their laptops, I don't know

sinful moon
#

yep typing on one right now, and no regrets buying again

knotty valve
#

Has MSI actually picked up their game?

#

I remember them being horrid

finite basalt
#

MSI is 50-50

#

we got some at work and they're appauling driver wise

sinful moon
#

Razer directly competes with the laptop that I have, but awful stability and support issues from what I've heard

ivory oasis
#

i know it might br too early to ask but have you seen any job posting with PT1 certificate mentioned? Just curious

finite basalt
#

like they use the ultra series and arc gpus and I remember needing to install drivers on the windows installer just to see the SSDs

sinful moon
#

Yeah MSI is better than they used to be, still kinda budget focused choice though

finite basalt
#

idk, the MSI ones we had at work were a nightmare

#

even now they're still a bit problematic at times

knotty valve
#

Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G6?

sinful moon
#

yeah I literally only know in general how their gaming ones are, would never be my pick though

finite basalt
#

like they were bought brand new last year

safe oxide
knotty valve
#

Seems to match my requirements so far tbh

finite basalt
#

our work ones are generally oriented around gaming because some workloads involve heavier computing

sinful moon
#

we've been deploying some ThinkBooks at work lately, but I couldn't tell you much about them

#

I work 800 miles away so never touched one lol

boreal scarab
#

I've imaged hundreds and thousands of thinkbooks, easy to work on, dont know performance wise

sinful moon
#

I just don't completely trust Lenovo due to what they did to my beloved, Motorola lol

finite basalt
#

the way I think about it is
ASUS: high quality laptops and good support
Lenovo: Decent quality, decent support
HP: better laptops than dell and tend to work but when they don't the support can be a nightmare
Dell: mid quality laptops and support so bad that it's bordering on malicious I swear

knotty valve
ivory oasis
#

People with OSCP what you think about PT1 certificate? (as a comparison)

knotty valve
#

Speeds seem no better than going an i5-13

finite basalt
#

if you asked me to rank it it would be in that order 🤣

safe oxide
knotty valve
safe oxide
#

Welp save some papers then

sinful moon
finite basalt
#

that's fair, I mean I had driver issues on my G5 745 but that was a windows issue, they withdrew support for my laptop after I'd installed it so the display drivers went kaput regularly

sinful moon
#

Dell support has been decent to us though

finite basalt
#

but that laptop would be 6 years old now and is still going good no problem, good battery life, no issues with anything else

sinful moon
#

heck they freaking replaced a laptop keyboard because a rich client of our complained that the paint had scratched off of his backlight Ctrl key

finite basalt
#

dell though I had several arguments with

sinful moon
#

I can't believe they honored that lol

finite basalt
#

I had to threaten dell

last harbor
#

Why

finite basalt
#

like they were a nightmare

last harbor
#

Why

sinful moon
#

Honestly they've always been great to us but fair we are a Dell partner

last harbor
#

I like dell ngl

safe oxide
sinful moon
#

I'd just never buy one for personal anymore, now if it was the 90s and early 00s yeah go all in lol

knotty valve
#

May stick to the Lenovo ThinkBook 16 then since it's in budget and has the memory cap I need

sinful moon
#

all Y2K era Dells I have are in perfect working order

last harbor
#

It was core i3 I think

knotty valve
#

My first was an Asus

finite basalt
#

so I'd sent my laptop off to them several times for repairs even going so far as to put a sheet of paper on it diagnosing the issue, steps for diagnosis, what needed doing and explicitly what not to do and why. They ignored it, did what I told them not to do, it then broke a week later and they refused to give me a new laptop because I was out of warranty, I'd explained to them that under british law they still have to treat it as under warranty for the next 5 years and had to cite the exact section of the law, pass it on to their legal department etc. before I got a replacement laptop

knotty valve
#

A9 cpu

#

It was mid

sinful moon
#

ah yeah I'm sure that will happen without these professional connections

last harbor
#

But then

#

It got hacked

safe oxide
last harbor
#

And the performance went down

knotty valve
#

I don't have the budget for anything more

#

But that's fine

sinful moon
finite basalt
#

I had so many issues with it, when I first got it the ssd was overheating to a point that it'd turn off, I sent it to them and they diagnosed it as not turning on, so they replaced the motherboard, then diagnosed that they couldn't install windows which they fixed by reinstalling windows and then sent it back to me with the same issue

last harbor
sinful moon
#

I say having built a Piledriver A10 desktop before lol

knotty valve
sinful moon
#

damn Burrish, never heard such insane horror stories from Dell. Besides maybe Percision 7770 or whatever

last harbor
finite basalt
#

I had to custom modify a heatsink to fit in the case, got the temps way lower, and then the laptop started killing my SSD NAND controllers. I sent it off to them stating that there was a motherboard level issue and not to just change the broken drive as it'd already killed three ssds of mine and was obviously not the ssd

finite basalt
#

guess what those idiots did

#

they just changed the damn drive

last harbor
sinful moon
#

either way yeah Dell is fine for work, not for personal is my current stance anyways

finite basalt
#

a week later, a short somewhere on the board started tripping the charger out

last harbor
#

Omg now I’m starting to doubt dell😭

sinful moon
#

lol unless you get beastly servers like mine

sinful moon
#

but yeah same vibe with HP Consumer (junk) and HPE (lovely)

finite basalt
#

checked the charging port and nothing wrong there, they then argued with me about the laptop design when I spoke to them and said "I've checked for shorts on the port etc." and had to explain that their piece of paper or pdf was wrong because I have the laptop open in front of me

sinful moon
last harbor
finite basalt
#

that was the point where I then had to argue the law with them because I said, I look forward to my replacement in the post, and they said not to expect one because I was out of warranty

last harbor
#

In terms of laptops

last harbor
sinful moon
finite basalt
#

and I said "the issues with this laptop have been occuring since within warranty and you failed to fix it when I sent it you" under the consumer rights act, you are required by law to issue either a refund or a replacement of equivilent spec

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

but yes I have zero complaints with Asus these days, but I've never needed to engage support

last harbor
finite basalt
#

but it was maybe 4 weeks of back and fourth and because I had uni work to do I ended up spending £200 on a temporary laptop

sinful moon
#

but even great hardware and great support can still rub someone the wrong way

finite basalt
#

I was working and writing some of the most passive aggressive emails I've sent in my life

sinful moon
#

my SO refuses to ever buy Valve hardware again after all the issues he had with his Steam Deck... when I've had none and know this is not common

finite basalt
#

I even sent a picture of the document I'd written and stuck to the laptop when I sent it them because I knew they wouldn't look at it

sinful moon
#

I've had two Steam Decks and both work flawlessly lol

finite basalt
#

I did, bear with

sinful moon
#

um is it? Chat is moving rapidly

#

I say as chat kinda does die lol

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

but yeah these days hardware buying is very personal choice and no great one size fits all

last harbor
finite basalt
#

also worth noting, when i first sent it to them they sent me it back with stripped screws on the back which I bollocked them for

#

like their diagnosis and repair teams are dreadful

sinful moon
#

me wanting "macbook like but for gaming" is very at odds which most of the rest of the goals of everyone else lol

last harbor
finite basalt
#

that was their response to that email

last harbor
sinful moon
#

mhmm

finite basalt
#

that was my response to that response lmao

sinful moon
#

really the real answer is often "build a desktop" but nah even I fell out of that lol

Historically HP has been even worse, but fair it's been years since I've taken a recent Dell apart

finite basalt

I'm never giving them another penny is all I'll say

finite basalt

The dell was a nightmare to take apart as well actually, the g3 15 3500 was easy, the new one, not so much

But fixing friends and family HPs have been enough for a lifetime

sorry your HDD is dying so you need data recovery, your laptop ribbon cable is dying, and your thermals are awful?

last harbor
#

Anyways chat I’ll go to some other place now

#

So bye all

sinful moon
#

typical hp

finite basalt
#

also the time where dell tried to call me on a premium number so when I rang them back, I ended up being charged 10 quid because I didn't realise and they kept throwing me back and fourth between the warranty and non-warranty because the non-warranty team already knew about the consumer rights act and the warranty team did not

sinful moon
#

saved data, reseat ribbon cable, blow out fans. Sounds simple but holy crap they are hellish to disassemble

finite basalt
#

that phone call was such a waste of time too, they kept trying to diagnose it after I did it for them, I'd follow their instructions and then they'd say "yep it's broken", like I've been trying to tell you for the past hour and a half 😭

sinful moon
#

Yeah I think that's just consumer stuff unfortuantely

finite basalt
#

again business grade's no worries and I don't know about their consumer stuff since their reshuffle but as of april 2023, absolutely not 🤣

sinful moon
#

workign with Dell professionally they just do the thing basically no questions asked

#

again I still can't believe they replaced the laptop keyboard of our rich client just because of a scratched key top lol

finite basalt
#

yeah, I've stated to non-business buyers considering dell, if you're ready for an argument with them if things break then they're actually really good value, otherwise steer clear

sinful moon
#

yeah ss stated, great for business, not sure I'd recommend them for personal anymore

#

been decades since I've had one for myself personal

finite basalt
#

and I thought microsoft support was abysmal when I told them their updates were purging all network drivers and they said have you tried switching from ethernet to wifi

sinful moon
#

But I can say 1999, 2002, 2016 Dell server, and massive variety of Optiplexes are going just fine for me personally

finite basalt
#

yeah I've no issues with their business grade stuff

tight sandal
#

Is the splunk basic room not free?

finite basalt
#

and actually would prefer a dell server over hp

#

like hp has all that subscription stuff, I don't know if dell does now but I don't think they do (for like the idrac stuff)

sinful moon
#

yeah half the reason I got it was for dat iDRAC, lovely

finite basalt
#

like iirc hp has an equivilent but it's a subscription based service

sinful moon
#

as long as you have a licensed iDRAC that's for life, mine was used so just inherited that

finite basalt
#

yeah exact;ly

sinful moon
#

that is insane if iLO or whatever the HP ligths out is requires continual sub though, never heard of that

#

Always heard and somewhat experienced great stuff from HPE so kinda suprising

finite basalt
#

I could be wrong tbf let me take a look

#

I think I'm wrong there

sinful moon
#

sounds good, I don't directly administrate any of them, we have some weird kidna "hands off" clients where they're multinational franchises with HPE so I just did the most basic of admin for them

#

ah okie

finite basalt
#

yeah I'd heard it from someone else but no it's definitely not subscription based from what I can see

sinful moon
#

lol maybe you're thinking of the Cisco Maraki routers which blew my mind when I heard that basic functionality was behind a sub.

#

Like that is not tolerable

#

But again I don't admin any of them, so that's just what I've heard

finite basalt
#

there's that and it could well be that the person I heard it from confused the package of 3yr tech support as being a subscription for iLO

#

no clue, but yeah definitely not subscription based with HP

sinful moon
#

makes sense

#

I know i shopped around with some of the HPE miniservers before I settled on my used PowerEdge so yeah makes sense. Alarm bells would have been going off for me lol

finite basalt
#

nah that's fair haha

#

tell you what I need to do a network rejigging soon i think

#

I've got a draytek router to get configured and in place

I just want to get a 2860 downstairs and move the netgear r8000 upstairs to replace my dsl-ac68u

#

I want vlans haha

sinful moon

My SO finally let me take over network admin so I inhereted three Unifi APs and a series of shitty routers that he didnt' do enough research on lol

I will want to buy a managed switch as well though at some point

sinful moon
#

and yeah ironic their GPL violation is yeah what opened up the whole custom firmware scene in the first place

#

iirc it was mainly over their busybox implimentation and more

finite basalt
#

my favourite custom firmware scene will always be the PSP

sinful moon
#

but yeah that's why dd-wrt and OpenWRT have those names lol

#

yeah PSP homebrew was just lovely

finite basalt
finite basalt
#

like they've figured out how to emulate service batteries with arduinos and how to get them to work on the 3000 etc.

sinful moon
#

mhmm just not quite as vibarant as it used to be, but Vita scene is very healthy since it inherets PSP support

#

ah neat, yeah Pandora's Battery was a huge huge deal back on PSP 1000s for sure

finite basalt
#

oh for sure but there's still some really interesting stuff a completely new cfw option came out in the past year or so for perm custom firmware on 3000

#

but they figured out the pandora on the 3000, e1000 and the GO

sinful moon
#

nice nice

finite basalt
#

and fully understand the one-wire uart communication so now you can get a usb to uart adapter and run a python script or use an arduino etc.

sinful moon
#

I actually did have to save a Firmware 1.5 PSP 1000 system I bricked (custom themes before they were stable enoughy) and yeah saved it with Pandroa's Battery

finite basalt
#

the vita scene's also pretty cool although it was an underrated console and didn't get nearly as much attention for a long time

sinful moon
#

but yeah this was wayyyyyy back in the day

finite basalt
#

I saved a psp 2000 I thought permenantly bricked (I thought it was a 3000)

#

that was a fun one because I made the pandora battery by opening the battery and modifying it haha

sinful moon
#

don't mess with flash0 unless you are ready for the consiquences lol. But yeah the homebrew progressed enough to not even make that a possibility practically

finite basalt
#

off the top of my head, for a slim battery you cut the trace labelled 19

#

and then when done, draw it back on with a pencil kekw

sinful moon
#

haha yeah

#

I was just talking about a similar silly unlocking thing with old GPUs ealier in another channel

#

just draw in the trace lol

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

yep sure didn't exist in 1.5 era, those were really early days

finite basalt
#

like thing ddc9 but built directly into the firmware haha

finite basalt
#

funny to think as well, think it was v1.5 that you could just request kernel access and get it because they forgot to disable it when trying to beat the nds launch

#

that and the functions they forgot to remove that allowed writing to battery serials 🤣

sinful moon
#

yeah around CFW 3.60 era or whaver is probably around when I stopped so it's been a while

finite basalt
#

the latest would be 6.61 and the common ones for that were 6.61 ME or PRO CFW

sinful moon
#

lol I still remember the days of DarkAlex and etc, mhmm

finite basalt
#

but now there's infinity, infinity 2.0 and I believe a 6.61 M33 is in progress, I believe the last m33 version was 5.33

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

Yeah idk, I think they intentionally dropped out after Sony low key threats. But I don't remember the deets

finite basalt
#

balika011 is a new name I believe and they've done huge amounts for the scene and do loads of different things

cunning gyro
#

I’m more impressed with noirs 18 year steam account, damn near my whole life

sinful moon
#

hah thanks!

finite basalt
sinful moon
rapid merlin
#

Good morning

finite basalt
#

yeah there's loads of psp stuff now on github

cunning gyro
sinful moon
#

hah yeah, I'm being greedy myself upgrading a 2021 machine to 2025 lol

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

yeah for sure scene names that I remember

finite basalt
#

in fact actually

#

I didn't realise this at first, you know trinity rgh on the xbox360?

sinful moon
#

lol I do remember when I was finally getting into infosec professionally, it almost blew my mind, wait these console exploits are the same as security vulnerabilites literally.... they were just always filed away in my head as "good things" since they let us do what we want with our hardware

finite basalt
#

how you could flash it with picoflasher and use a rpi pico, that was developed by balika too

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

lol I always knew they were exploits, but felt a bit different in this whole context

#

yeah for sure

finite basalt
cosmic sky
#

I am a Alien

finite basalt
#

another name, khubic2 developed some stuff in the past couple of years for the psp

#

yeah, still very active

sinful moon
#

nice!

#

you do much homebrew/cfw with other consoles as well? Wii and 3DS were by far faves of mine for such

cosmic sky
#

Now give me all your money

finite basalt
#

I've a modded 3ds, two modded psps, a modded psvita (I need to change the joystick at some point), a rghed xbox 360 and then a stock switch (not a hackable model)

sinful moon
#

good stuff!

finite basalt
#

the xbox mod was interesting, was my first time scratching away to expose the copper under a via and then soldering to it haha

sinful moon
#

Yeah I do actually have a hackable Switch but I lost interest by the time it was meaningful and my SO snatched it for his crazy Pokemon schemes

finite basalt
#

was absolutely shit scared of breaking the xbox

sinful moon
#

mhmm I bet lol

finite basalt
#

yeah that's fair, I'll probably do it when the switch support goes

sinful moon
#

I think I have a series of writeups you'd love

finite basalt
#

but the 3ds was a nice easy mod

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

10/10 just hardware architecture and how they work of consoles

#

usually discusses security as well

finite basalt
#

nah I'll give that a read, thank you 😄

sinful moon
#

all free to read there but you can buy them as books and ebooks

finite basalt
#

ah class

sinful moon
#

lol I bought every single one as an ebook to support him. Don't have physical space for books but would be nice to have them

#

But indeed, I'm obsessed with console hardware and specs, exploits and more

finite basalt
#

that's really cool 😄 I've got some up-coming trips as well so they'll be good reads when I'm on the go etc.

cunning gyro
#

To bad this next Xbox will be the last Microsoft produces

sinful moon
#

lol you're not wrong

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

They're going hard on diversifying almost to the point of becoming a Sega

cunning gyro
finite basalt
#

I think that's for the better though, encourages people to move to computers

#

where people have more freedom

sinful moon
#

Yeah Nintendo kinda has their blue ocean strat, so it's realistically jsut been MS vs Sony for last couple gens

finite basalt
#

as much as I like consoles, I like consoles because emulations are not the same

sinful moon
#

yeah lol 360 was my last "real console" besides just buying obligiory Nintendo consoles

finite basalt
#

like handheld consoles are different but regular consoles are just naff imo, just shitty computers with loads of restrictions

sinful moon
#

Yeah exceedingly boring

cunning gyro
#

Last Nintendo I had was the switch in 5th grade to Pokémon black 😂

finite basalt
#

I would like to see microsoft and sony focus on developing computer games and move away from consoles

sinful moon
#

Erm the DS you mean?

finite basalt
#

especially as the main argument for most console gamers is "I like using a controller" like you can still use a controller on pc 🤣

sinful moon
#

yeah lol

#

I have many different controllers I use on PC as the need arises

finite basalt
#

like in this day and age, unless it's handheld there's no reason for it to be a console

cunning gyro
#

Wasn’t really 3D but 😂

sinful moon
#

okay 3DS then, but yeah Pokemon Black is a DS game

finite basalt
#

hell sony and microsoft are both making their games accessible within the computer market now, giving less incentive to invest in their consoles

sinful moon
#

Oh you mean the graphics themselves, well sure but Diamond and Perl were also 3D graphics in that regard

cunning gyro
#

Nah Nintendo 3Ds, wasn’t really 3D

finite basalt
#

even switch and stuff, like they could move their market onto pc and then still have the software on handhelds and pcs

sinful moon
cunning gyro
topaz falcon
#

honestly I like portable consoles like the 3ds, I so badly wanna buy one and probably will soon

finite basalt
#

older handhelds are elite for sure but modern consoles are no different than computers

#

they either have arm/intel chips and amd/nvidia gpus

sinful moon
#

hah at least Nintendo kept the PowerPC dream alive until the switch

finite basalt
#

only difference really now between consoles and computers is the OS and the restrictions

sinful moon
#

that was neat at least

topaz falcon
#

hell yeah brotherrrrrrrrrrr

I plan to get one for that. Never played majoras mask but I own it now.

sinful moon
#

nice!

sinful moon
topaz falcon
#

for a college project we actually used a 3ds to dump DS games specifically which I found interesting (boot9strap i think). It involved that guide I think

sinful moon
#

yep exactly

#

wild for a college project tho lol

topaz falcon
#

it was for a sorta boring easy class like "ethics" and whatnot in computer science last semester.

cunning gyro
sinful moon
#

ah lol

#

um how the heck did you 360 on road trips, just DC to AC inverters?

finite basalt
topaz falcon
# sinful moon wild for a college project tho lol

tbh it's super easy now, we actually were gonna use the rom dumper I was making but I have a problem with the led screen currently so never got past that (we were so close to testing the dumping of gba games)

sinful moon
#

because if that's your complaint lol, nothing stoping you from... yep Steam Deck and more

finite basalt
#

and there's the asus handheld computer and some others

#

like now there really is no benefit to a console

topaz falcon
#

kinda wish I got the steam deck but I do enjoy the switch, even if it is underpowered.

#

didn't xbox get leaked they have a portable in the development?

sinful moon
#

I have both, barely touch the Switch, but I am hyped for Switch 2 and have it pre-ordered

#

it's not leaked so much as strongly rumored

topaz falcon
#

I wish I had the money for switch 2, I'm still a college student so ifykyk

sinful moon
#

totally fair

finite basalt
#

see I won't pay for a switch 2 because I dislike nintendo as a business

sinful moon
#

How so?

sinful moon
#

Then you have no leg to stand on with your argement lol

#

360 is literally harder to use portablly than a laptop or PC handheld

finite basalt
#

they're very heavy handed on the cfw scene and like people using any intellectual property even if not profiting

sinful moon
#

Oh sure but that's nothing new in the scene

finite basalt
#

I remember they tried suing themself for copyright infringement when they were developing a game

sinful moon
#

but yes it is unfortuante how hard they go on the IP stuff

topaz falcon
#

just carry it with an electric generator, sure it may be heavy but smh then you simply aren't a true 360 electric generator fan

sinful moon
#

Sega has the right approach

finite basalt
#

and then there's the cfw scene where they didn't just sue the guy, they sued him to bankruptsy and beyond

sinful moon
#

"oh damn you devs are doing cool things, wanna just make our next Sonic game?"

topaz falcon
#

what nintendo is doing though isn't really new, so I am not surprised what is going on.

finite basalt
#

Like they're brutal about it, they were even going after pokemon based roblox games back in the day

sinful moon
finite basalt
#

nah it included other groups as well where it was modchips for enabling homebrew as well

topaz falcon
#

the pokemon game was essentially using assets they made iirc

#

in terms of roblox

#

so really not surprised. I don't like nintendo operates but to be fair, they are consistent when it comes to enforcing their protection of their IP.

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

not sure what roblox has to do with anything but lol

#

I won't play devils advocate for Nintendo tho, yes they are overly litigious

finite basalt
#

people developed games that were based off pokemon and they all got purged

#

same with emuparadise, the archive of all past and present consoles and games

sinful moon
#

I mean that's Roblox lol, PalWorld is a whole different matter

#

emuparadise aboslutely sucked though, but we're starting to get in gray territory

finite basalt
#

that got taken down, sony content and all just because of nintendo's legal threats, for like gameboys etc.

#

that's fair but literally the entire site ended up purged

sinful moon
#

they weren't even good at properly preserving games which if you have any leg you want to stand on, that's the one

#

bad dumps galore lol

topaz falcon
sinful moon
#

that's why we have real preservation projects which do not distribute any ROMs, just the hashes and complete information of what's required to have a "perfect dump"

finite basalt
#

i never had issues with that but my issue lies with nintendo erasing any preservation of their games and consoles if it doesn't make them money in the process, even for like 30 year old consoles where they no longer can earn money on the sale of games as they're all second hand

sinful moon
#

No-Intro and Redump being examples of such

#

no piracy there, it's all just metadata

topaz falcon
#

I have to agree, Nintendo's weird policy currently of a subscription service for their older games is stupid. Piracy is a service issue, not monetary most of the time.

finite basalt
topaz falcon
#

yeah brickbronze is what I meant, sorry.

#

loved that game

finite basalt
#

my argument would be, if the games become difficult to obtain, having those libraries of games is imperative to the preservation of that console's history

sinful moon
#

Again I hate playing devil's advocate but come on I'm a mod in emulation communities. Yes I get it, I'm frustrated by it too, but it's far from gone

topaz falcon
#

emulation will save my marriage

finite basalt
#

it's mainly that I understand piracy costing a business money but when they don't make the games anymore, it actually doesn't lose nintendo any money

sinful moon
#

That's why we have communities who care more about actual preservation vs lol pirate the game bro

finite basalt
#

like they don't make gameboy games anymore so does it cost them anything for those roms to be public? because if people buy the games, it's not coming from nintendo it's coming from a third party who contributes no money to nintendo

#

I understand concern with present consoles and dealing with that to prevent piracy but for older consoles I feel like it's completely reasonable

sinful moon
#

Unfortunatelly we can only argue so much about how moral or just it is when they are practing their legal rights to protect their IP. Trust me I hate IP law, but this is the law of the land

cosmic sky
finite basalt
#

oh yeah, it's legally valid on their end, it's just a moral dilemma, like yes it's their property to do with as they please but also it does them no harm to allow people to download games for retro consoles where the games become hard to obtain as time progresses

sinful moon
#

It's much better when you get people together who care about preserving a legacy for future generations and do it low key and legally. Dump your own games, make sure they match the well known hashes of good dumps because the community has come together to catalog them all, etc etc

finite basalt
#

even that's legally questionable now unfortunately

#

under british law it's now illegal to backup your dvds etc. iirc

sinful moon
#

lol watch out if I find libdvdcss on your machine

finite basalt
#

like preservation of media is being made harder and harder because of pressure from businesses

finite basalt
#

I swear I've had to load it to read some dvds in vlc before

sinful moon
#

I won't lie I was told to stop here when I was talking about legally ripping the media I owned in my own region so I won't get into it much further, it very much depends on where you live

#

so potentially best to just move on lol

finite basalt
#

yeah I get that, it's a bit of a weird one because I know some countries are fine with dumping your own medias for backups and then some countries really don't like it

sinful moon
#

so using libdvdcss is a bypass of that

finite basalt
#

like iirc in the UK you could legally download films etc. but you broke the law if you shared it, like if you torrented or shared a platform with pirated content that'd be illegal. Obviously it's changed now so downloading is also illegal

sinful moon
#

Yeah unfortuantely sounds like things are getting worse in the UK unfortuantely

finite basalt
#

Laws in the UK are actually pretty on top of tech as it changes for both better and worse

sinful moon
#

wild situation when US is better about fair use for once lol

topaz falcon
#

we should obviously just make everything free and make sure its only free for me, then I'll sell a license for everything(tm) to y'all

#

that is wild and never knew that

finite basalt
topaz falcon
#

only now read your name and I love it

finite basalt
#

Like if it were legal I'd absolutely go and have a media archive of all my dvds and do away with my usb dvd drive

sinful moon
#

Yeah we just kinda settled a lot of this in the VHS era pretty early (in the US)

topaz falcon
finite basalt
#

Just hiding in there

sinful moon

I'm only slightly tipsy, not quite there yet lol

finite basalt
topaz falcon

IPAs aren't my thing at all

sinful moon
#

yeah IPAs are usually too hopsy for me personally

finite basalt
#

yeah not fond of IPAs but I have had some nice ones from a local brewery

topaz falcon
#

idk I prefer IPAs to regular beer and thats from someone who used to only like sangria

sinful moon
#

but I'm just drinking 5% ABV Angry Orchard apple ale lol

finite basalt
#

I'm not big on beer so IPAs aren't for me

#

although a stout is always nice

topaz falcon
#

lol I'm drinking ipa that is around 9% (had two pints around that and now one more can.)

No worries either way

empty ember

didn't microsoft have like 38tb of data leaked bc of ai researchers
