iirc, it's a free course, however, once you complete the final exam it gives you a voucher for the real deal.

But yeah, I'd say as tedious as it might be, you'd have to go thru it so you understand what's about to be in the final exam, or exams. If you think it's not necessary, because you are linux proficient, you can speed-run or skip a few modules.

a few nights of crying out loud, not much.

On a serious note, it is different for everyone, it may take a couple of months, it depends how constant you are.
For python, you need to code/program constantly. (constantly != everyday) but have a constant behaviour at least on practising and reading documentation so you understand the code, and what you google.
As for Linux, start with a VM, with your favourite distro, and experiment, in one month, you can have a solid basic base.

Honestly, I don’t think rank correlates well to skill. You can have a high rank but still be overall new to hacking, and you can have a low rank and still be an actual licensed pentester. Anyway though, I’d say you count as a ‘hacker’ if you can complete a few CTFs
