hey guys I am new to building a home lab, right now I am encoutering a problem with VirtualBox NAT network configuration, here is the scenario, I have two VM (Kali and Victim1) when I make a new NAT network (DHCP enabled 10.0.2.0/24 IPv4 prefix, IPv6 disabled) I boot up one machine first (Kali), typed ifconfig -> eth0 (the nat network adapter) only display an IPv6 address, no IPv4 address was provided, the same thing happens when I boot the remaining machine (Victim1). How do I setup a NAT network for this?

I had this problem once. Where the machines jumped from NAT to bridge. from what i remember , i had to modify the file before importing it to Virtualbox as some of them came with bridge settings by default. Can't remember exactly how since i moved to VMware since then and i can force put them to NAT even if the machines are running

If you haven’t tried setting those up on your 2016 server, that would be a good start. Do some sysadmin tasks and then learn how to defend against your insecure by default configuration. PingCastle is one tool which will scan your AD/GPO setup to tell you how you are vulnerable

I also don’t have VirtualBox experience but decades of experience with other VM products and networking. Maybe instead of DHCP, just statically assign them on the client side to sidestep any issues there. Otherwise yeah you could switch to bridged and manage it from a higher level

You should be able to statically assign IPs just via Windows or whatever operating system you are testing with. Typically one would reserve a DHCP range to be above where you statically assign IPs but idk how VirtualBox works there. It should just aquiess and allow you to assign those IPs however if you set up this NAT “VLAN”

You’d do so within the guest VMs at the OS level

basically they have to check into the “router” (which is simulated in this case) and ask, can I have this IP, if the router says yes then you’re all set

but I will again say, I avoid VirtualBox and Oracle like the plague so I’m sorry if this is a false lead, just good info either way

I know for my Proxmox server (a virtual machine host) I just do bridged instead and then let my router handle them instead of dealing with the complexities of NAT, plus I can VLAN them a bit easier

just tell them what you want to follow and ask them to invest in that with you so you can reach the best outcome possible.. Then show them that IT people can make as much money as a doctor

There is plenty of information about careers in IT / Security that you can show them. Take it slow and slowly get them to understand that this is something you really want to do and that you can have a career where maybe in the future you can even make more money than a doctor!

I joined one when I was 16 to learn "informatics".. that was a game changer for me

Since they don't seem to have an understanding of the profession, they might think that it's not possible to make a living or that it won't lead to a job when you graduate, but it's actually the other way around, a lot of people are needed in the industry. Try to be patient with them, they probably only want the best for you and for you to have a good future, but as I said, show them what it's really about and what opportunities are out there!

you are completely right. Never stop learning from the itnernet. But maybe searching for a school would show them how much you are invested in that, and schools also give a certification at the end, which I guess they would value

Exactly. Show them how hard you work to learn and how motivated you are. Taking courses and certificates is the way to go, but these involve hard work, blood, sweat and tears and unfortunately cost a lot of money, but you are investing in your future!

Looks like there are two separate partiations on the drive. Sometimes this is done when creating bootable drives. You usually have to find a drive utility and reformat the drives, deleting the old partiations and making one new one.
