I will say you don’t need to -Syu for every package install, just leave out yu for normal package installs and if your repos report not finding a package, just do a pacman -Syu without referencing this new package just to make sure things are squared away

lol no that is fair, and I have done the same with Arch may times. An older install can just “feel” messy to me after some time and it is kind of nice to refresh everything, even if it’s not actually bogged down by stranded config files no longer in use and etc

It’s very interesting but I think the GUID based paths for everything is a bit of a nightmare. But fair their tooling is supposed to make that transparent to the end user

FreeBSD would actually be a strong suggestion if you’re enjoying Arch. Arch was founded upon many design principles of FreeBSD and their Linux predecessor CRUX.

Before systemd when Arch was on sys v init, we had an /etc/rc.conf just like BSD

FreeBSD ports == the AUR, etc etc

Think about ifconfig which was depreciated in Linux years ago from lack of dev activity in favor of ip a suite and etc. That was never depreciated in FreeBSD because it’s still maintained as a core component of the OS

the FreeBSD ports are more or less just everything else beyond the core components of FreeBSD… plus they offer binaries for all of them unlike the AUR
