for some people, it’s because security has been shilled as the “go to” industry with tons of job security for way too long, giving people the false impression that every last soul is needed and that companies will beg you to work for them

and for people like myself, it’s because i find it a bit more enjoyable and dynamic than sitting writing software all day

The key is to understand the technique to use

rapid merlin
rapid merlin
finite basalt
#

I'm going to have to run an ethernet cable around the house ;-;

#

Am getting a quarter of my internet speed on ethernet over powerline and this house has no ethernet adatpers at all and because it's a rented student house there's nothing I can do about it

finite basalt
#

It's fiber to the house and then coax to the router

#

I'm getting 250mbps which is still plenty but I would like the faster download speed I get when connected to the router downstairs, at some point I'm getting a firewall as well so I don't have to use the virgin router but am not bottlenecked by the firewall on my r8000 router

finite basalt
#

Currently yeah

#

Unfortunately on a different circuit though so the speed is a fraction of what it should be, that and it'll be producing radio noise which isn't great for myself or anyone else interested in radio.

#

Not even got coax in my room otherwise I'd look into moca

loud marlin
#

if they bring you fiber into house then you do not need coax

finite basalt
#

the fiber terminates on a little box outside the house, likely so the consumer isn't at risk of damaging the fiber cables

narrow wyvern
#

hey guys, can someone help me with this batch file? i'm trying to make a cool ASCII art show up, but the command prompt keeps closing as soon as it opens.. its driving me nuts

loud marlin
finite basalt
#

may well technically be HFC

finite basalt
naive violet
finite basalt
#

I would do it myself but I don't think the landlord would be too happy, mind you I reckon it'd increase his house value

loud marlin
#

you do not need. the LAN is main socket on to that box where fiber is connected

naive violet
finite basalt
loud marlin
#

ah

#

well buy one 🙂

finite basalt
#

I get the right speed on the router but have no way to route it to my room and get full speed

finite basalt
loud marlin
#

well.. talk to owner. the internet will be there long time

sturdy lark
finite basalt
loud marlin
#

i mean. is logical to do so

#

a ok

finite basalt
#

Either way the landlord would be reluctant and I like him so I don't want to change that 🤣

loud marlin
#

might owner also wish to set it up

finite basalt
#

maybe but it's a student house so probably doesn't care much

#

I don't fancy spending ~100 quid (if I did it myself) for something I'll only have for a year plus it's inconvenient to route, no easy way to route it really, don't think we've got any underfloor access covers so I can't take a little adventure under the floor and route it that way and then for upstairs I'd have to pull up the floor and figure how to route the cable from there, no fun in an old terraced house, likely why it's not been done

naive violet
sturdy lark
naive violet

We had loads of cables in our student place lol

fair then

naive violet
#

Drywall = plasterboard, in case you need a translation

finite basalt
#

There's all sorts, like I'd have debated using the coax that runs right past my room on the outside wall, it goes to a yagi antenna that's not being used, the cable goes straight through the the brick in the room under mine, doesn't even have a connector but that's an easy fix, debated seeing if I could receive anything on it haha

#

But again it'd be a lot of work getting it into my room and I'd still have to invest in moca and then run a cable from one downstairs room to that downstairs room so nothing really saved in money or effort

this is my solution instead

bruh wym 24v

#

ohh like that

naive violet
#

Old Volkswagen beetles (and some others) can run 6v electronics. Most cars are 12v.

finite basalt
#

They're required for the ECU, starter motor etc. and on that car (it doesn't have an ECU) but it does have a generator output, radio fitting capability etc.

#

Yeah it's got a little port on the back so you can use the car as a generator, even has a hand throttle which is cool

#

this is one of the ones they might've used in it, not sure which it is but it was designed that you could throw it in there and use it or wear it on your back if required

naive violet
#

Some of them are a right pain in the rear for connectors etc

#

Foundation license holders now can modify/build their own kit so there's a decent chance you can get it on ham bands if it doesn't already do that

finite basalt
#

Oh yeah absolutely, even things like the towball is a nato hitch and the connector for the trailers is different, it's got pins in it for the blackout mode the military might use on operations

#

The alternator also had so many pins and, I've held an alternator before but that thing was heavy heavy

yeah this is the series 3 24v alternator, very many pins

finite basalt
# uneven swallow any idea which car your looking at?

Not sure, my dad built a robin hood kit car which I've helped a bit with and I'd probably go down the same road of a kit car so I could do it all myself and be proud of the welding, electronics etc. that went into it

uneven swallow
finite basalt
#

yeah but it's not the same as building it yourself IMO, I think I'd enjoy that process yk and tbh kit car parts are dead easy to get hold of, like the engine in my dad's is a ford sierra ~1998 inline 4 and you can fit various different engines etc. in that with ease because it's designed to be built using a donor car

naive violet
#

I just can't justify the time, space, or cost of a car at the moment

finite basalt
#

that's the thing, I've a little matiz waiting for me to take and I'm hoping that because it's a 20 year old 1l engine the insurance won't hurt quite as much as a brand new sports car

@finite basalt also, I haven't messed extensively with firewalls. I usually use UFW's, but I was planning to use OPNSense

finite basalt

Fair enough, trying to figure how to keep full performance on a router which bottlenecks my internet speed because of the firewall

My thought was disable firewall and setup a physical firewall but I wasn't sure what'd be reasonably priced, cheap to run and not bottleneck gigabit speeds

because I saw the netgate 1100 is an Arm A53 and is rated for 927mbps as a router and 607mbps as a firewall and the rpi5 has an a76

pallid lotus
finite basalt
#

literally the only issue I can see is the ethernet hats potentially being bottlenecked depending how it connects

finite basalt
#

Only issue I'm having with the Pi idea is finding options for ethernet hats because everythings just a PoE injection hat ;-;

pallid lotus
#

It won't be a huge amount, not compared to the virt server. More than a Pi though

#

Then again, not sure I'd want to run an inline firewall on a raspberry Pi anyway...

finite basalt
#

I don't know, the hardware itself should be fine, it's more an issue of whether I can find the hat for it and then the right drivers for pfsense/opnsense to use that hat

#

https://thepihut.com/products/usb-3-2-hub-gigabit-ethernet-hat-for-raspberry-pi was looking at this but it really bugs me how it connects to the pi

The Pi Hut

This Raspberry Pi HUB HAT from Waveshare adds 3 USB ports and one Gigabit RJ45 Ethernet port to your Raspberry Pi, which is great when you need a stable wired Ethernet connection on a Raspberry Pi Zero! Don't forget to grab an RJ45 cable too! This HAT is driver-free, and works with the Raspberry Pi 4 and the Raspberry
