signature is used to authenticate data. i.e. all my commits and packages are signed with my publicly available gpg key, so if my account was somehow compromised, people can't shoehorn their way in and add untrusted data

it just confirms that the data is (a) unchanged since it was signed and (b) actually from the person who owns the key

ofc, that raises the question of confirming the key is actually from who they say they are
