Unable to connect to the Active Machine IP via OpenVPN. I was able to earlier, but now it just keeps saying it can't connect. My OpenVPN is connected, but I can't connect to the intmal win20 machine.

I notice when starting OVPN I get this message: Wed Apr 21 19:18:05 2021 ERROR: Linux route add command failed: external program exited with error status: 2 Not sure if that matters or not. I'm not good with networking yet.

I've tried switching to a different OpenVPN server and downloaded a new config file, but no dice.

Alright, tested out a few things. I spun up the VM on my server that's also in my house, downloaded the OpenVPN file and tried connecting to THM without luck. I grabbed a new one from HacktheBox and that one successfully connected out, so it seems that at least it's related to the TryHackMe OpenVPN file

I'm going to download it to my desktop outside of the VM, and see if that one connects out

Might run Wireshark and see if I can figure out where the connection is trying to go, and maybe that will point to any issues

Tried running it on my desktop, and it looks like I'm getting the same error connecting to TryHackMe from there

You have tried a number of OpenVPN mirrors already, you could potentially try them all one at a time but that would be tedious too

I wonder if your ISP is blocking it somehow?

Haha, yeah. I'll keep poking around. Looking at my router, I've got 1194 that the OpenVPN connection seems to be using opened

Might bug my ISP tomorrow and see if they can help sort it out, just to be safe

like james said its not inbound so i don't think any router specific rules would impact it unless you had deny outbound stuff

Source will be random, it won't be blocked by source port

I grabbed a new VPN config from HacktheBox with the UDP 1194 selected, and that wouldn't connect the handshake. Then I saw they have a TCP 443 one available, and I tried that, and it gets through

Figured it out! The Modem/Router from my ISP had their Firewall IPv4 settings backwards, so it was blocking 1194

Basically you’re right, it doesn’t work and the developer of the room isn’t going to fix it. You need to grab the flags from a write up or find a video of someone with the flag. That’s the only way to complete the room.

I just subscribed yesterday and am working on the network services rooms now. They are effectively unusable because nmap is so slow. A quick search on here shows lots of people saying the same thing bit I don't see any solution. Times ranging from 40 min to 2+ hours to scan one target machine to get one answer on a lesson are crazy. And I am using the attack machine, so my internet connection is not the issue. you can reduce the number of ports you are scanning, you can do faster scans (if the suggested is -A, that's probably overkill). You can also increase the number of threads nmap uses
