It would make it so much easier if you were familiar with Jujutsu kaisen
Just plain no?
Well you can flavor spells that do these kinda things as going into a shadow or whatever but if you don't have the spell learned no
Good luck
Where do I make said character
Sites like dndbeyond, or find a fillable pdf and write it down
chat im still reading the rules how do you gain expertise
is it during character creation orrrr
Only Bard and Rogue have baseline skill expertise
Otherwise you need the Skill Expert feat or have the spell Skill Empowerment casted on you
Or ranger, if you play with the 5.5e rules
Good morning
Good morning!
Hiii
Hallooo, how are you?
hello everyone, im new to this game and just make my char as Paladin
Have you read the free rules yet?
yes i read it
If you have any questions or something's unclear, people here love to help
So true
im looking for my 1st game, but still confuse how to match up with anyone's party or DM
#find-a-game Can help you get in touch with a group. It has all the necessary info for finding groups in this server.
Finding a game can take many forms. It's basically like finding a hobby group. People-self organize and sometimes there are tools that help with that (like what Somebody above linked).
Here's a document from community member iamrazorwing going over more places to look: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?tab=t.0
hi hi! im not exactly new to dnd, but theres a lot of stuff i dont know about and would like to learn more about in depth, what are some good resources for learning more about how dnd works?
very vague question sorry im just not really sure how to narrow it down because i only really have a general understanding of the key aspects of dnd
Hi there! I think the free basic rules actually do a great job at explaining the game: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
It starts with a general overview and then gets more specific with plenty of links to more info.
cool, alright! thank you!
is there really 4 backgrounds i can choose from
With the free basic rules there are 4 backgrounds provided.
When you buy other D&D books like the Players Handbook (or are in a campaign with content sharing) you may access more.
There is also potentially the option to bolt your own together, letting you pick the skills, ability score increases and feat but that is very much down to your DM on the day.
Starting off, stick with the free ones. Ignore the names, go with the one that has the features you want.
is there a way to change the measurements on the dnd beyond site to be the metric system instead of the imperial one
No, the site doesn't currently support other languages, and the english version is purely in imperial.
Three feet is a metre, a mile is one and a half kilometres. That'll get you close enough for elfgames.
Hey not sure if this is the right place to ask but I’m wanting to get my first set of physical dice but not really sure what to look for - I’d love to get something unique and not plasticy amazon crap. Where’s the best place to find sellers?
i like chessex gemini dice personally, lots of good color combos there
might fall under the plasticky category tho
What about buying some metal dice?
Chessex gets a nod from me. The Dice Shop Online has many options.
Metal dice pretty much must be used with a dice tray. They are heavy and loud. Can be fun though!
am i delusional i feel like i sent a message and it got deleted?
Could be possible, if it contained something not allowed on the server it would've been deleted (though usually you'd also get a message from Dynobot if that happened)
yeah i was asking someone to "count me in" in their search of a party
the classes available dont really let me play as the charcter i have in mind
what do you have in mind?
megumi from jjk (jujutsu kaisen)
Soliciting for games isn’t allowed in this server outside the specific channels , so that’s likely why
Ah, yes. Organising games is limited to the respective channels.
ah dont know anything about that
2014 Druid swarms get mostly there
hes a summoner, who uses shaodws as a medium and his innate abilty is that he can use shadows as storage and can even enter it for a short moment as sneaking per say
Though, I wouldn’t expect a one-to-one translation. DnD ain’t anime, and tbh I recommend getting inspiration rather than copying
but it says he "harnesses the power of nature"
he feels more like udyr from league of legends
Flavour is free
You can make it however you want, just have mechanics that back it up
so can i say i have virtually infinite storage with a weight penalty but add a flavour that goes like "he stores X in his shadows but the burden of their weight is on his shadow (so on him)"
i had this exact conversation just 5 hours ago
No, because that storage and weight penalty is a mechanic
Though you could flavour your spell slots as that
so i cant add flavour to existing mechanics?
You can, but creating a pocket dimension to store your stuff is reaching into mechanics
After all it helps you conceal things and carry things that are too big/unwieldy.
Flavor is something like describing your spells differently, like magical playing cards instead of darts when casting Magic Missile
When you start getting actual mechanical benefits, such as being able to hide anything in your shadow to smuggle objects where you like, that's no longer just flavor
but it has a weight limit? cant i just get a penalty in rolls that require agilty and be at a disatvantage
that makes much more sense
i understand why now
ok so the summons i imagine are animal shaped but have some supernatural abilties do the summons of the druid do that?
for example a bird like creature that is much bigger (cant carry a human tho) but has electricity flowing through it and can strike with it
Some 2014 Druids just are very good at summoning a ton of creatures
Specific animals and abilities can be flavoured
cant i just summon a few that are strong? i there a charcter for that?
Yeah, that’s closer to 2024 but I’m sure there’s also some spells that can do that in both versions
I’m less familiar with 2014 tho
i apologize, but i need to attend to something... i thank you for being patient and trying to help
Np
So uh... How do I find people to play with?
on this server, you can head to #find-a-game
IRL, you got friends and family or local game stores and stuff
there is also roll20.net and /lfg on reddit
I am shy irl,
Ah the classic introvert folly
To play a game with people, you have to talk to the people you want to play with? So messed up, who designed it this way
Hi! Im looking for a DM, alredy sent the thing on find a game, but can someone tell me how long does It usually take?
There's no guarantee you'll be contacted by anyone given the ratio of players to DMs. I'd suggest perusing #looking-for-players and reaching out to folks whose ads interest you!
Oooh what a good idea!! TYSM!!
Yes, you can't just carry 500 kg without context lol
You'll take penalties for carrying over your weight limit but even then there's a point where you physically cannot carry more
Also about the animal part the stuff you can summon are fixed
They're usually ordinary critters and you can summon less critters but are stronger individually
You can't summon an electric bird thing or anything wacky though, summoning still follows dnd rules
Ello
G'day. What's on your mind?
Heyy 😄 not a whole lot- I'm looking around a lil overwhelmed I'm not sure wth to actually like do- I'm supposed to play my first like one shot soon with some friends I'm a lil nervous

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Quick question bones, how do you do the bot thing?
Have you got a character made up?
How do you mean, exactly? Are you asking how to get the bot to post the message above? Type:
?new
Thank you! I'll give this a read
Uhhhh I believe I have one done? My friend helped me finish her up
Yep thanks that's what I wanted to know
What class will you be playing?
I'll be playing rogue, I'm playing as a shifter
Are you happy you understand the rules for sneak attack? It's the big thing for rogues.
I don't think I understand much of anything 😭 I'm looking through the rules RN but this will be my first time playing ever
Please ping me whenever you're talking to me btw 🙏🏻 I won't see otherwise
Gotcha!
Short version: check the type of weapon that you're using. Finesse, or a ranged weapon like a bow will do.
The target has to have one of your friends next to them, or you have to find a way to get Advantage on the roll. Between you and me it's a lot easier to go for the first option.
Ooo ok that's actually kinda fire I haven't finished the rule thing I'll check out the weapons after
She's actually a lot more suited for close range attacks since I have her charisma kinda high 😄 Im mostly aiming to charm ppl into giving me things I want and if not then just uh taking it by force
Worth noting that charisma checks are decided by the DM and ultimately its the DM who decides how far your rizzing can go when it comes to convincing people
Can't just literally charm anyone lol, I don't think Rogue really has any in your face charming features either
I hope you get the chance for that in your adventures!
But they're decent at persuading, lying or spooking someone with big words that's for sure
Check out the #channel-guide when you get a moment, there's a lot around here. Feel free to hop in anywhere you like.
Lmao I'm playing with close friends and it's my first time so I think they'll go easy on me lmao I picked rogue because I want her to be able to sneak around and steal stuff (she needs money for pipe weed lmao)
Oki Doki! I'll definitely check it out
I honestly have no clue I'm thinking rogue is just a classification not like a set look no?
Yeah they're classes
helo
There's spells or abilities that have something to do with charming people but Rogue doesn't have those
Arcane Trickster does get a charming cantrip called Friends but yea not the effect you're shooting for
Wdym?
There's an effect called Charm which can be triggered by various things, mostly spells. Don't worry about it, I know what you meant.
Elloo
Uhh I got this from someone else so imma just pass it on

Hallo I’ve arrived
Eloo
Howdy. What's on your mind?
Sleep
Alrighty then.
It’s 1:40am
Hey all! New-ish to DND (played a campaign a few years ago), and would LOVE to get back into it. I enjoy more story-driven games than trying to "beat the game." I am most often free during the week days 2-4pm. Or Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday after 7:30. Trying to convince my wife to play but she has never done it before. Happy to play virtual or in person (Atlanta Ga)!
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Check the bot post for instructions on using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels. For in-person games, you're probably better off looking at local libraries/community centers, hobby stores, and school clubs. Or use digital tools like Facebook, Reddit, and Nextdoor to search locally.
For in person I literally just chatted up my local store owner and found out they were looking to do a big DND thing 😄 I think it's so cool what you find out just chatting
Uhh would anyone mind taking a look at what I have going on with my character? My friends helped me with it for the most part but I'd like to see other opinions
because i am as new as i am and have kiddos online seems easiest. i know there are several LGS that have dnd campaigns but i beleive they are mid campaign atm
Post it to #character-discussion!
I can't post anything-
What I mean is, share a link to the PDF or a screenshot of the character sheet, depending on where/how you made it.
Ohhh uh
It was sent to me as a PDF but I can't send it as a link it's not letting me (I'm on mobile)
You can upload a PDF to Google and link it that way or take screenshots, upload to Imgur, and link those (with context of what the link is for).

can someone give me a reference for what a character sheet for a dragonborn sorcerer is supposed to look like
There's one in this Pay-What-You-Want bundle: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/507809/2024phb-adventurers-league-al-and-legends-of-greyhawk-log-learn-to-play-pregens

Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.

Hello ladies and gentlemen
But I don’t know how to make links
Copy it from the sharing link or address bar, like so: https://ibb.co/gbQ3psSj
(A character sheet example)
yeah that's not what I asked for I already read through that part
Alright, what do you need?
a reference for what a character sheet for a dragonborn sorcerer is supposed to look like
Typically a dragonborn sorcerer has four skill proficiencies, four cantrips and two spells prepared at level 1.
Here's one: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/163123046
Is that a premade from DDB? I can't find those anymore.
Literally just banged it out.
Ah, I thought you could view the premades while being logged out. Maybe you could at one point. Hopefully that's implemented again later on.
@wild onyx: Above and beyond, sir. Well done. 🫡
I think you need to be logged in as it's basiclaly creating a duplicate of one of the premades for your own character collection... but I don't know all the technical details.
Loryax is a slender, streetwise black dragonborn, who found his burgeoning life of crime curtailed when his sorcererous gifts came in and he jumped up on the Watch's wanted list. He's left his old life and friends behind and has started a new career in the world after saving a stranded merchant from a goblin attack and being rewarded with gratitude and gold. He's going to see how far this "helping others" thing will take him.
hey, i just had this idea for a campaign and tbh i dont know if its been done before, so im here to ask about it. A western style world, dry desert only At the height of the industrial revolution, travelers begin pouring into the untamed west, searching for fortune and prosperity among the unknown horrors of a cruel and ancient world. It is a time of brave gunslingers and rotten scoundrels, inscrutable gods, and savage demons. Now, for power, you can either find legendary wepons imbued with magic, or you can trade for it. demons make deals, tempt you with power, only to get every last bit out of you. Gods need sacrifices, certain tasks that need to be done. The line between devil and god is thin in this cruel world. I mean thats the gist of it, thought of it while thinking about a badass cowboy gunslinger with 2 legendary guns, one for killing gods, one for demons. but anyways what do you think
P.S. im new to dnd in general so sorry for the bad story telling i tried my best to describe the world
Well, the general idea is fine, though D&D doesn't do great with gunslingers.
I mean it doesn't have to be only for gunslingers, that's just the general idea that came to mind since it's western style. I don't see why other wepons wouldn't be useful since monsters, demons, monstrosities etc exist
I've had a similar idea I called A Town Called Intrigue, heavily inspired by the show Deadwood, about a mining village in an unexplored territory. Add magical silver, ghosts and strange creatures, and explore the relationships of the locals as the place develops from a simple camp to a (hopefully) thriving small town.
that sounds actually like an awesome story to play
#dm-world-building would help if you wanted to throw some more ideas down.
I mean I probably won't actually create a story, i want to expirience dnd atleast once as a player, it seems so fun but a bit scary to get into, since i basically know nothing aside from really basic stuff

hi chat
uh how do i determine the saving throw stats
and the uh passive perception stat
Saving throw bonuses are just your ability score modifiers, plus proficiency bonus from class. For a level one sorcerer that's an extra two to Con and Cha.
Passive Perception is your Wisdom bonus, plus ten.
hi chat is filling in 10 for the initiative space on the chaaacter sheet normak
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
"Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so."
uhh, how do i opt out of a service if i accidentally opted for it?
In the thread attached to your post say that you are not actually looking for other services
Your class should tell you
What class are you
im a sorcerer
Charisma
OHHH WAIT IS IT JUST MY CHARISMA STAT
Yes
i thought it was like a secret other thing
No
do I put in the modifier or the actual score
Dnd is relatively in your face on that regard
uuuuhh
You put the actual score
aight
So if you have 16 cha for example it would say 16/+3
can I send y'all a screenshot of my current character sheet to see if im doing aight
chat what determines the maximum hit dice i have
Where did you make your sheet? If you made it on D&DBeyond then you can send the share link here or in #character-discussion .
For the hit dice question your maximum is determined by your level(s) in the class(es) you have, as per the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#GainingaLevel
The basic class information will also tell you this
no it's like uh not complete and I just wanna know if I'm doing certain parts right :3
How are you making your sheet?
I like downloaded a pdf and I'm just filling it out
can u tell me though cuz all I see is it saying D6 😔
You can upload the PDF to a trusted file sharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that
Read the words following d6:
Hit Point Die. D6 per sorcerer level
can't I like send you a screenshot of my work in progress and see if it's total bs or not
I don’t usually accept DMs from strangers , sorry. Screenshots can be uploaded to file sharing sites as well though!
yeah but doesn't that mean at lvl 1, you get 1D6 and at lvl 2, you get 2D6 and so on? I wanna know what number I fill in on the blank space that says "Hit dice ___ spent ___ max"
damn the hell happened to my text
At level one a sorcerer gets 6 HP (max hit dice roll) + their con modifier
At level two they roll a d6, add their con modifier, and then add that to their total HP
Or they take the average of a D6, add con modifier, and add that to their total HP
?tag new hp
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
Wait you were asking about max HP and not the number of hit point die per level? 😭
man it would be so easy if i could just sent a screenshot
well I already filled out that spot
You can - by using a reputable file/image hosting service and sharing a link
can u help me w that

Yet I cant put myself out there as a player looking for dm.
Yes that is what it means. A level 1 sorcerer will have 1 d6 hit die. A level 20 sorcerer will have 20d6
You have to use the bot commands as noted in #find-a-game
There's an option for creating a post in #looking-for-dm
does this work
Yep
Thanks@wild onyx
The spent part tracks how many hit die you expend to heal yourself when you take a short rest
so like what do I fill in the max part
Spent is to indicate how many of the hit dice in your pool have been spent (e.g. you can roll hit dice during short rests to regain hit points).
Max is your total hit dice in your hit dice pool. So a level 2 sorcerer would have 2d6 in their max. Let's say they get some damage and in a short rest expend one of their hit dice to regain hit points, the player would indicate how many of their hit dice they rolled to regain hit points.
wait so like you only get one roll if you're lvl 1?
Also here, as part of the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#ShortRest
Yes as you only have one hit die at level 1
ohhh alright thanks
You can review the free rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Chapter 2 goes over how to create a character step by step.
hi i was just wondering about this as well
is it accurate to say that those spent hit die are not regained until a long rest
Correct!
Correct.
thank you very much!
Put into context, short rests can heal you... but repeated short rests eventually stop being able to heal you.
chat what's the difference between thunder and lightning
Thunder is sound-based damage, whereas lightning is more akin to electricity.
Mechanically they’re different damage types so each may be boosted by certain features, resisted by certain monsters, etc
You can find them all briefly described here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#DamageTypesTable
I've read the rules relating to this part (I think) but how do I like use it? How do I reference it when i'm playing? Idk if this makes sense
https://ibb.co/VpqGFpx8
Ah, spell slots
Depending on your class and level you will have varying amounts and levels of spell slots. You use these to cast spells: for example, you use a level 2 spell slot to cast a level 2 spell, but you can’t use a second level spell slot to cast a third level spell
Think of them as ammo, in a way. And the higher the level the higher the calibre.
okeee
I already read that part but I wanna know like let's say I cast a spell. How will it change in my character sheet?
Ah that’s what you mean
When you expend a spell slot you'll mark it off as expended
also could you check if i filled in the numbers correctly? My character is a level one sorcerer
You put down how many spell slots you have and tick/fill in/mark the box each one as you spend it
Feel free to share the entire sheet
it not finished right now 😔
but like is this section okay https://ibb.co/VpqGFpx8
It's fine, it's just easier to check the whole thing if you want to see if you filled in numbers correctly instead of piecemealing it
okeeee
Looks right to me
Yeah, you have the correct number of spell slots
the thing is that I'm not going to be playing the character I'm making it for my friend based on what she says she wants her character to be but she hasn't decided with the lore and background and stuff
is this okay
Preferably she’d make the sheet with you so that she actually knows how her character works.
Best way to learn how to play a character is 1. Playing the character and 2. Making the sheet for the character
Well and reading the rules
yeah she's too lazy to read the rules and I don't want to scare her away because it was my idea for us to start playing and I really wanna play but it's been like three days trying to wrap my head around the rules for the player and after this imma have to get my head around the rules for the dm and oh my god
The rules for the DM are going to be the same as for a player
If you got any more rules questions feel free to ask here. I’d still recommend getting her to read at least a bit tho…
Well, for the most part. The DM doesn't have to understand 100% of their player's character sheets
I do ask her stuff like "what class/species is your character" and "choose your ability scores and your proficiencies" but she takes a long time to respond
thank goodness
And yeah she should be reading as well, perhaps with you collaborating it'll be easier.
Your shared basis will just be Chapter 1 of the Basic Rules, which is honestly the bulk of the ruleset
I still don't think I've a hundred percent gotten the proficiency bit down i just bsed it but I'll show y'all when I'm done
Making a sheet is only half of understanding your character, you need to know how the game works to actually play
Basically, you add your modifier to a roll, and if you’re proficient in whatever you’re doing you add an additional bonus (+2 at level 1)
?tag new skills
Skill Proficiencies
Most ability checks involve using a skill. The skills are shown on the Skills table, which notes example uses for each skill proficiency as well as the ability check the skill most often applies to. The DM has the ultimate say on whether a skill is relevant in a situation.
If a creature is proficient in a skill, the creature applies its Proficiency Bonus to ability checks involving that skill. Without proficiency in a skill, a creature can still make ability checks involving that skill but doesn’t add its Proficiency Bonus.
for the species and classes part I've only read the dragonborn and sorcerer part
If that’s what her character is that’s all you need to know
yayyyyy
i'm choosing the spells for her too and I'll just tell her what they do later on
I just need to read the equipment and feats portion
but the feats part is really throwing me for a loop
You won’t have to worry much about feats for now if she’s level 1
Sorcerers get those at level 4, 8, 12, 16 and 19
If you’re playing 2024 you’ll just need to get the feat from her background

Hi! I've been lurking watchjng D&D Campaigns for a few years but have only just decided to actually try to learn how to play the game itself haha :)
Welcome! Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 (focus on chapter 1 which describes the core game mechanics and flow of the game and chapter 2 which goes over how to create a character step by step)
Feel free to ask questions as you run into things..
I have a question on "Allies/organizations", my character is a cursed warlock noble who was turned away from his family after he was cursed by his fiend patron. What would be good to put, if anything? They stopped being a noble and was turned away at 15, and they are now 22. Would they ally with Wizards, Mages, or those who know about hexes? or maybe they know nobles from thier childhood. As a reminder, their curse brings misfortune and sickness, so they would be turned away once adverse effects emerge that directly affect those around them. What should I put?
Wizards, Mages, and those who know about hexes are a very broad group of people. It's hard to make a deterministic statement on what organizations would be willing to help, shun, or even know you.
Ideally this is something your DM would/will help you out with as you integrate your character into their world. If you haven't found one yet, try to keep it general (i.e. "a beneficiary") or even blank.
Ditto for the curse, that is something you should work out with your DM, especially if it presents mechanically instead of in RP.
Its mostly just for RP, and the DM is honestly not on much, I joined the campaign on https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008, and they have OKed my characters concept, however they have yet to fully explain the outline of the campaign
I would try to get some more info on the setting then next time you can contact them
how the hell do I play dnd
how can i make the monk class give me profciency in "simple weapons and short swords"?
You read the game rules (see #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), ask questions as you run into them, make a character sheet to learn how that works, then find a group to play with.

how do I finda group
Literally in the bot message right above (e.g. the #find-a-game explains how to find a group and how to use our Looking For Game channels)
What kind of character sheet are you using? If i'ts a PDF/printed sheet, just make a note and adjust your attacks with those weapons to include your proficiency bonus.
No you're fine. Give me a sec to write up the steps
im trying to build a certain character and after some guides i decided that the monk will allow me to emobdy it best. but its telling me to pick a tool? and ai suggests the calligraphy tools. i have never played before im trying to make a character before i start looking so how important is this "tool"
A tool helps you make specialized ability checks, craft certain items, or both.
You can read about what various ones do in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#ToolProficiency
So at level 1 a monk picks two Skill Proficiencies as listed in their class table and 1 musical instrument or artisans tools.
Your Origin: Background gives you an origin feat and to pick a couple of abilities where you can increase their score.
But by default the monk class automatically gains proficiency in "Simple weapons and Martial weapons that have the Light property" - and D&DBeyond should reflect that (although it may spell out the specific weapons that meet that criteria).
If your DM decides you gain another weapon proficiency you can go to the front end of your sheet and down below languages is a gear icon and label "Proficiencies & Training". Click that gear and the side panel opens up and you can add additional proficiencies. But always get your DMs permission and understanding before you start adding new proficiencies to your character. 😉
is it ok to creat the character before keeping tabs with my -to be- DM
im trying to get the explorers pack instead of the available choices, Is that even possible?
Sure - but only as a concept and practices. Adjust your character to the group/table/campaign once you have a DM as they may have restrictions for whats allowed/permitted in their games.
i understand
is there any reason to not multiclass?
As a new player, it's not a good idea as you don't have enough familiarity with the rules yet. You can end up with a less effective character than if you kept to one class.
ok thank you
Heya
so now im done with the class tab, there doesnt seem to be a place to write down the background. can i just write on a sheet of paper?
also is the background a mechanic or just flavour? does it add practical stuff like "experince in cutting trees" per say
Do you mean the background you must choose per the mechanical rules or background as in your character's history?
i dont know man, im the character builder in the DND beyond
this is the 2nd step after class choice
There's a spot somewhere
Background gives you a feat, proficiencies, and equipment, so it does have a mechanical impact.
mb, there was a tab
the youtube guide im watching keeps mentioning "explorer pack" and "10 tarts" where do i get these? i only did the 2 skills of the monk and picked the "calligraphy supplies" as my tool
That sounds like they are referring to the 2014 version of the monk class
Just follow the D&DBeyond builder and pick choices and see how it works
You don't need to worry about this character beyond learning how to make one
I'd suggest referring to chapter 2 of the free basic rules as it explains building a character step by step: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
i get intimidated by links and almost never use them
so what you are saying is it doesnt matter that much right?
Any character you make without a table is essentially for practice!
And that's valuable knowledge. But there's no guarantee you can take the character you make and have it be accepted at any/every table.
good to know
im having way more fun just thinking how to adjust this character to me and how to make it come to reality
That can be fun. But it's also important that you follow the steps of character creation correctly so that when you do have a table and are asked to create a character, you know how to do so according to the rules and not just personal preference!
i dont know the rules but when im done i think a great way of learning them would be for you guys to tell me what is allowed and what can be adjusted
there isnt a pragmatic good option? what could i subsitute it with
the character in my head would want to do good but he wouldnt go as far as to save a criminal or someone who is already dead
How the character behaves isn't dictated by the rules. You have a lot of freedom in that regard. But how the character is built and what they can do are in the rules, which is why Noob linked them above.
can anyone check my character i made him for AL in FR but i really dont know anything more outside of what i created
dear god i just finished my character but i read something about "dedicated weapon" or "kensei"
how can i check that box for my monk characther i didnt find it anywhere?
you need to be a level 3+ monk with the Kensei subclass
that's a special thing only kensi monks get
ok
another question
can i change my short sword from piercing damage to slashing?
its more to stay in character idk if it would have mechanical implications
just grab a scimitar
but my character uses a shortsword
shortsword does piercing, scimitar does slashing, both are available to you as monk weapons
ok ok? can i ask my DM to make the scimitar look like a short sword?
cool, also... my character has lots of details that might be hard for the DM to keep tabs on with the other party members existing. so should i share stuff like? my character uses the shadows as a medium to summon X
he doesnt have to know that i can be the only one to know
are you playing a shadow monk?
i dont belive so?
Iirc I suggested you reflavour Druids
there was litearlly no way i could do that on my own, so i found a guide on youtube
also druids are stuck with me as the "huntress wizard" from adventure time
and thats not what im trying to make here
what are you going for?
megumi type character from Jjk
basically a summoner who is also competent at close combat who uses his summons as opening or even himself
Flavoring is free, just justify your Druid how you'd like
but im sure this guy on youtube knows what he is doing he has a full playlist of jjk characters turned into DnD
It doesn't have to be a plant touching vegan
can a monk not summon ?
No
no as in he can summon
You might actually want to go bladelock for that, maybe with a bit of pact of the chain mixed in
they get plenty of summoning spells and are plenty good at close reange combat, eventually getting 3 attacks at level 12
No as in monks cannot summon anything by default
I don't think Monk have any summoning gimmicks by default
V few subclasses do in general
issue is, as a classs, warlock is a little complex
can you elaborate i cant understand
whats a blade lock?
At level 3 you get to pick a pact boon as Warlock
Those are another set of permanent buffs unique to Warlock
Warlock gets access to bonus abilities called Eldritch Invocations; one of those is Pact of the Blade which allows you to bind and summon weapons
You can pick Blade, Chain or Tome
also, are you playing 5e (2014) or 5.5e (2024) ?
okay so you can take it from level 1 then
so am i cooked?
Honestly, if your DM has already approved your summoning monk, I wouldn't worry about the official options too much. But if you haven't gotten approval and you're trying to make a character to show them, I would definitely not trust some random videos on YouTube as a source of truth
5.5e is better for this, so you're good
ask me about my character
i think this is faster than sharing the pdf
I don't need your PDF. I was just saying, if your DM has approved it, you're fine
If your DM hasn't approved it, nothing you've described sounds like an official monk subclass
i dont hhave a DM
Then I would recommend sticking with the basic official rules, not YouTube suggestions
i just came here and got guided to DnD beyond and have been working on this charachter for 3 hours or so
a bit late
All I get so far is that this character from JJK is a summoner who gets summons from doing rituals where the person 1v1s the summon, and if the person wins they get the summon like a pokemon, something about grabbing stuff from shadows and diving into another person's shadow to be invulnerable, uhh
Something about buffing summons?
If you're using D&D Beyond, what option did you pick to add summoning to your monk?
i didnt?
Okay, so saying your character uses shadows to summon things was just flavor?
How did you determine that your character could do that?
does that help my case?
is this youtuber called "teddy's adventures" a fraud then?
In the sense that it sounds like you've actually picked an official option, yes.
However, I would not recommend multiclassing as a new player, particularly with monk and wizard
But yeah, the closest you're going to get to translating the character mechanically would be a Warlock taking Pact of the Blade at level 1 and pact of the chain and whatever else looks good to you at level 2 for your early eldritch invocations
You start getting other summoning spells around warlock level 5~7 IIRC; but your Pact of the Chain familiar can be fairly decent
Cuz there's a lot of misinformation and clickbait in general
which video are you following?
thirsting blade and Investment of the Chain Master at level 5 and devouring blade at level 12
a lot of channels that i see doing "x anime character in dnd" use third party or straight up homebrew to replicate their abilities
I can't verify the content for any random YouTuber. They range from completely viable and likely to be accepted by a DM to 100% homebrew/bad faith suggestions and everything in-between
In general, I would recommend starting with the actual D&D rules and seeing what interests you.
yeah...
for the hiding in shadow ability; you'd use the 4th level spell Shadow of Moil
Trying to replicate characters from other media in D&D often doesn't work well
got it
i feel bummed out,
Personality's the only thing that's easily portable, rest not so much
... This is the exact thing I said to you on the first message lol
all together, that gets you incredibly close to what that character was described as powers wise
You can keep the character and tweak it. Maybe you'll find a DM who would let you use it.
But at minimum, if you're new, Monk/Wizard is going to be a really complicated starting point
Hey guys, I'm trying to pick between a paladin or a bard to play in this campaign that only lets me use the 5e 2014 versions. Is 5e 2014 paladin or 5e 2014 bard the better counterpart to their 5.5e version?
I'm the only person I know with a Monk/Wizard multiclass and it's a terrible idea
I'm doing it for specific flavor, but the two classes do not mesh well at all
way later on, there's Boon of the Night Spirit which would be the best match to the hiding in shadows bit; but One With Shadows for infinite uses of Invisibility on yourself when in dim light or darkness works in the meantime from level ~5
or shadow of moil as stated
C'est la vie lol
It's not that much different than the rest of content on the internet tbh. People are after views more than anything else
It happens, now you know. When you've learned more about the rules, maybe revisit that character and see if you can make them work. I just wouldn't recommend it as a first character at all
Dnd is notorious for not having a lot of good sources beyond the basics cuz every table is different imo
So its a bit of learn the basics, talk to actual people, salvage what you can, come up with your own take on things
If you want to be a martial arts character with cool shadowy flavor, Shadow Monks do exist
There's also the warlock option that Meabhy is talking about
the warlock would fit a bit better but the tradeoff is it's mechanically a bit more complicated to pilot than the monk would be
Also back to the 2014 thing, I think paladin is probably slightly closer between 2014/2024 than bards. If nothing else, you can smite more often so it's the more powerful choice imo
i will say about the video i'm not seeing anything that is just straight up homebrew, it's just not a very effective build
Ah so like the rainbow build where you multiclass 1 level into every class
it's not going to feel like what megumi is capable of it's kinda just "these features can be associated with megumi's abilities or flavored as them"
What was the proposal anyways
Yeah, even if there is no homebrew, Monk/Wizard is going to be a red flag by itself
shadow monk + illusion wizard
Lmao that's just griefing
That multiclass requires like 4 stats to even function
Way too MAD for a new player
I was expecting Spores Druid somewhere
The name of the game for translating a character is to try and get things as close as you can with mechanics without getting too into the weeds and then reflavoring as needed
in this case; you can do it in a single class with warlock and hit most of the important notes so that helps quite a bit
i didnt like how it sounded
But flavoring is free
spores arent cool
You don't have to be a mushroom sniffing vegan to be a Spores Druid
the summoning part also only starts at a combined character level of i think 8 so
why is flavouring not free for my case?
Because in your case you're trying to introduce new mechanics
discounting the explanation the youtuber makes for flavoring lower level spells as summons
please explain further
Flavoring is when you describe a fire bolt as shooting a fire shot from a magical cannon
Flavor is still free. The problem is that monks can't actually summon. If you wanted to flavor existing Monk powers as summoning shadows, that's way more viable
New mechanics is when you're shooting a fire shot from a magical cannon that makes the enemy burn for eternity
what are monk powers?
Actual Monk abilities. Like martial arts or shadow Monk teleporting
Punch stuff really hard for starters
My question to start with would really just be, "what do you actually want this character to be able to do mechanically"?
A monk cannot throw spells traditionally and on the situation they could, its v limited and it isn't summoning stuff to fight with you
lemme think of a good cohiesve response
Starting with the mechanics and flavoring from there tends to work much better
It also helps to try to not get too locked into themes/archetypes of classes as reasons to avoid them. Like the idea that druids are some kind of huntress wizard.
You can change the flavor of a class/character personality. You can't change the mechanics.
Here's everything all together for you so you don't have to hunt the messages down.
The closest you're going to get to mechanically translating the character with minimal reflavoring would be a 5.5e Warlock taking Pact of the Blade at level 1, and Pact of the Chain and whatever else looks good to you at level 2 for your early eldritch invocations.
You'll start getting other summoning spells around warlock level 5~7; but your Pact of the Chain familiar can be summoned from level 2 and will be fairly decent throughout.
Thirsting Blade and Investment of the Chain Master at level 5 and devouring blade at level 12
for the hiding in shadow ability; you'd use the 4th level spell Shadow of Moil, and or you'd take One With Shadows for infinite uses of Invisibility on yourself when in dim light or darkness, which you'd take either at 5 and delay investment to level 7 or you'd take it at 7
Way later on, there's Boon of the Night Spirit which would be the best match to the hiding in shadows bit but that's not a thing until level 19 and either of the options listed work for now.
Or Spores Druid
Pick all the summoning based spells and make your own army
Spores Druid are also decent at beating people with a stick too
he would be competent at using weapons and close hand to hand combat. he would be able to summon an assortment of "summons" shikigami and he would have like telepathy they move and do as he wills. he has differnt shikigami 10 to be excat but he wont have all of them available from the start but he would have to "tame" them through a ritual
and his innate technique is that he can interact with the shadows as if they were a pocket dimension. so he should be able to dip into his own shadow. and he should be able to do so with each shadow, the catch is that anything in his "pocket dimension" weighs him down as if he is carrying it.
Hello can someone help me
So a Spores Druid for the most part
I responded in #character-discussion !!
oh, thanks
i appreciat what you wrote, but this feels like a new character. and a fun one who ill surely try but this isnt what i want from this "megumi" character
it's that in dnd, summoning a creature can only be done with certain spells, rules as written. it's fairly common to allow people to come up with their own descriptions for abilities to best suit the design of a character, but creating semi-sentient creatures as megumi does may be a stretch too far for some dms. additionally, many of the "summoning" descriptions suggested by the video are illusions to begin with, like they suggest using silent image to create the toad, which doesn't align with how the summons are portrayed as tangible entities in the manga/anime, which could affect your immersion playing megumi and his summons. technically, you can think of many ways to describe basically any ability in dnd as something megumi can do, but the flavoring done in this video doesn't really support the mechanics of megumi's abilities, it uses megumi's abilities to explain how the mechanic is happening. thus, if you actually wanted to have a physical summon that can take hits and do attacks, like the divine dogs, taking all those monk levels first means you have to wait even longer to get access to summoning spells that will fulfill that role. most campaigns won't start at level 8 and can take a while to get there, so it will be a long time before you have an animal that can be on the field with you
So, some of these things are simply not possible in d&d mechanics. Which is one of the reasons trying to exactly replicate another character rarely works perfectly
can a spore druid summon a giant bird like creature and 2 dog/wolf creatures and maybe a giant snake an elephant many rabbits (like millions, mostly like a wall to cover the character for a moment) and the others i can accept not having
i just have no idea what he does
for the purposes of playing a character that feels like megumi, i would prioritize finding a decent build that can do things that mechanically reflect his powers, then flavoring them to match - whereas in my opinion, the youtuber does it the other way around, they take classes/subclasses that thematically resemble megumi and use his abilities to explain the mechanics, resulting in a build that is hard to play and not very effective without crazy rolled stats
as others suggested, warlock and druid are both pretty okay with this
OMG, thank you... im amazed at how far you went to help me
Yes, yes, yes, I think? I think?
genuinely im very grateful
Conjure Animals is a funny spell
but said animals have supernatural abilties. the bird has electricity... thats about it really
Warlock would be better at the fighting shadowy side with potentially some summons/spells that could be flavored as animals/shadows
Yeah that part is impossible
the snake poisns i think
Cuz you can't make up creatures for your summoning
good luck with finding a route to it that works better for you
as someone who is experienced with doing this sort of thing, what I wrote out will be very near to the best route to get as many of the listed abilities as possible while still having a coherent kit without deep multi-classing or compromises on abilities
All the summons listed have to be stuff within the dnd bestiary
While druid would generally be better at actually summoning things, but worse at fighting
no problem! :) i hope it cleared some things up about the build
i feel animosty
For something like an electric bird, you could for example take the cantrip Shocking Grasp and flavor it as using a bird like that. But there is no electric bird summon
Don't be silly Meabhy is the furthest person away from being packed with malice
explicitly tried not to, even
so i can flavour an electric attack as a bird?
anyway I'm off to bed; it's like 02:00
night all o/
Sure. Some DMs are more okay with that than others, but that's going to be much more acceptable than making your own summon abilities
ok so, do you suggest what the dude i though had animosty towards me (im sorry your name is odd) will be better for a beginner
You can flavor an electric attack to be one where you shoot out a bird shaped projectile
in the source material its like the bird crashing into the opponent
and sometimes flapping its wings to shoot straight elecricity
Sure. The exact description isn't that important
Yeah that's probably impossible, not the flapping part
thats really cool
What's important is that you find mechanics that actually do that, which you can then flavor like this character
ok so ill go with the warlock setup
An electric attack can look like a bird but it cannot actually be a bird that flaps around and does more stuff after
taking the blade lvl 1 and then later asking my DM to explain what meaheby said
i think that the build they suggested is an effective a summoner character that you can flavor as megumi fairly easily, but you would have to rely on stats (building STR and CON) and maybe tavern brawler (a feat) to replicate megumi's unarmed combat abilities (unless i missed something in their post)!
it will depend on what you see as most important, you will likely have to make a sacrifice of being less effective as a martial artist or being less effective as a summoner, and their build suggestion is best suited to focus on megumi's summoning abilities
can the blade be flavoured as a dark matte short sword/ flachion that is like that due to concentrated shadows in its blade due to it being in the shadow pocket for a while
Yes, as long as it doesn't do anything extra
i think thats easier no?
Given that you can resummon the pact weapon, flavoring it as being kept in shadow space would be reasonable to me
yeah imo it's a lot easier to build and play than to balance monk + summoning
i imagine a mordekaiser or yorrick from league of legends when warlock comes to mind
any race can be any class ^^
there's like. one subclass that is race locked (battlerager for dwarves in 5e i think?) but generally race will have no impact on what classes/subclasses you can pick
does the lore of my character matter ? ai said its cool to have so that the DM has more stuff to do about your character
and if so what should i add? like any lore making tips
Battlerager isn't race locked
Yes it is
god which one was i thinking of then
Sorry my bad, it could be race locked
i think it's nice to have some idea of who your character is, but for dms running story-heavy campaigns, they may ask you to make a new character or to change things to suit their story/setting. so it's fun to prepare that kind of stuff but don't get too attached until you're in a campaign ready to play ^^
Battlerager is dwarf only in SCAG and Bladesinger used to be elf only before the reprints
"Only dwarves can follow the Path of the Battlerager... Your DM can lift this restriction to better suit the campaign."
Anyone doing a dndbeyond 2024 rules precon campaign on Saturdays that I can join?
Yeah, locked by default. DMs can always change things if they want
why can i not say the opposite of heaven
I swear you can
hell
woah
Yeah there you go lol, there's a place in dnd lore called the Nine Hells so it'd be weird to censor that
they're so okay with the word hell that they made nine of them
i cant say the opposite of cool
Uncool?
Because the specific word you're trying to say has its roots as an insult
To disabled people
One of my PC concepts is meant to be into the cult of Asmodeus
but i could argue that "go to hell" inflicts more damage the more religous the person is
You should take it to #moderator-support in that case but in general don't question the censors
I'm just telling you why that word isn't allowed in this server
They can't ban hell because it's literally a location in d&d
But if you're actively insulting someone, that would also be against the rules
Even if hell isn't banned by default
It's hard to tell tone over text
Also not a fella
do i need to read the whole pact magic tab for the warlock class or does it get explained further down
i dont know why i said further down, i mean will my poor DM explain
whats a cantrip
A spell that doesn’t take a spell slot to cast
Depending on your class and level you will have varying amounts and levels of spell slots. You use these to cast spells: for example, you use a level 2 spell slot to cast a level 2 spell, but you can’t use a second level spell slot to cast a third level spell
would highly recommend reading the rules and not relying on a dm to teach them because the dm can't know what you don't know, there will easily be miscommunications if you aren't at least a little aware of the rules. you don't have to memorize anything, just getting an idea for what things exist will be enough
I mean I would memorise a few things
so i have 5 slots
and i have 1 slot for each level?
so if i decide to use "witch bolt" as a lvl3 spell i cant use my other spells as lvl 3 again till they come of cooldown
What level warlock are you?
1?
Also, you can have more than one spell slot per level.
If you have no idea of anything I would highly recommend you read the free basic rules
You have 1 spell slot as a level 1 warlock
fair warning warlocks specifically use a different system for spells than other casters. they get a much smaller number of spell slots, all of the highest level they can access, and they refresh on a short rest (a 1 hour break) instead of a long rest (8 hours)
there is a time mechanic?
Yeah warlocks use pact magic rather than spellcasting
yo how long does a full run last?
DnD doesn’t usually have “runs”
Heloooooo
If you mean a campaign/game, varies from a single session (called a one shot) to years
YEARS
My game has been going on for nearly a year now, I’ve known some that have been going on for a decade
ok damn, i suppose its hosted every week or more depending on the group.
so how long does a session last?
Indeed, personally mines about twice a month at best
And a few hours, like 3 or 4 maybe but it varies
like lets say we are heading north and we go from a castle and after a while decide to settle in a motel in a village
That would depend on how the DM runs travel, if you encounter anything, the details of those encounters, and how fast the players act. So to say, idk
ok ill take a break and come back after im done reading my "character creation and playing the game"
Time isn’t 1:1 real life to in-game. Your DM might montage over a few weeks journey to a neighboring country over a quick paragraph, or on the opposite end you might spend a whole session deciding what to buy in the city markets
just another question, how are games hosted if we dont live in the same neighbour hood?
You go to a meeting spot or online
For in person games lots of people travel, dependent on what distance/time they’re comfortable with. And yeah otherwise online is a popular option
how would online usually go? since i dont think any one plays dnd in my neighbour hood let alone country
?tag new online
that makes sense
thank you mister, im grateful for all those who helped me
now i gots to go, buh bye
You can check out a local game store or library to check if there are dnd communities near you
its been so long since ive last played dnd and i really wanna get back into it. i dont really know where to start, and i may need to learn some things again because i have a poor memory 😭 and i also just have such a good character in my head but idk how to get it out there in a real game. anyone up to help me out?
bam
How much do you remember?
well ik how character sheets work, i know the dice, although some like a d4 and d12 are pretty obscure to me
Those are used for specific weapons or spells mostly
i know the classes and how they work mostly
For the rules, Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
For your character yoy can prolly get input and help in #character-discussion .
people buy the books and the merch and subscriptions for premium stuff on dndbeyond
i dont understand modifiers (im reading how to creat a character)
i suppose they are automatic and the more volatile you have the more aggresive the modifier is
Like how to calculate them?
Or what they do?
im reading the tab about
and it doesnt help that much
also whats the differnce between jittery and fidgety? like how are they opposites
Is this for Dexterity descriptions?
They’re just suggestions
whats dexterity? its like how manuevarble your fingers are persay a violinist has some dexterious fingers? right
Sure that’s one way. It’s also acrobatics and finesse
The tomato analogy
Strength is crushing a tomato
Dexterity is dodging a tomato
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato
Intelligence is knowing tomatoes are a fruit
Wisdom is knowing not to put it into a fruit salad
Charisma is being able to sell a fruit salad that contains tomato
ill use artless as an insult from now on
great message thank you
Basically most of your rolls will have a modifier to show how well versed you are in that action. This usually comes from your stats and, if applicable, a proficiency bonus.
so if i roll a 2 i add my proficency and abilties level and now its a 16 per say?
Probably not
Its ability modifier, not score
?tag new abilities
The ability modifier table is at the bottom
Noice
first of all, i wanna know if i SHOULD be doing this rn
because like, i still dont have anyone to play with
It’s a good practice
its alot to digest. the hitpoints part is so hard to comprehend
so if i get hit have to roll to heal?
During short rests
They’re called hit dice because they’re refilling hit points
and then some attacks dont use strength but dexterity and in the warlocks case charisma??
Yup!
Yes finesse weapons CAN Use Dex, and warlocks have an invocation to use charisma
intiative is decided by dexterity and i suppose its like the first strike in fighting games
It determines turn order
why is there a turn order? isnt that something players just say hey lmme go first?
It's for combat
Nope, dnd is a turn based game combat wise
Where the game becomes a bit more structuredd
i guess that makes sense throwing 4 attacks at a goblin waters down the game
whats AC
i look at it after character creation
Armor Class, it determines the number you need to meet or beat on an attack roll to hit something
Your armor will tell you the AC it gives you
so if after applying whateve needs to be applied i get an 18 score, the attacker has to deal more than 18 to hurt me?
If you have an AC of 18, then yeah an enemy needs to roll an 18 or higher to damage you. if they succeed on their attack roll, then they will do their damage roll
I suggest overviewing the first part of the Basic Rules, it explains all the fundamentals that Chapter 2 (Character Creation) goes off of
i basically finished it might as well
is the level of a spell like a rarity?
so a level 4 spell NEEDS a level 4 slot or higher to be prepeared
but if you have 2 level 1 slots and 1 level 2 slots
you can use 3 level 1 spells no problem
i just realised it doesn't have to be an adventure... some sick people could turn it into pokemon.... wait why do i need DnD??
dnd is just roleplay for adults, but adults like rule so they created structure through all these rules
some even more sick people could include innapropiate events... its insane
some DM could put his players through a campaign about "fear and hunger"
someone should do the fear and hunger campaign seriously
I mean someone probably has made a campaign based off of Fear and Hunger, I wouldn’t be surprised
There is an entire book dedicated to “inappropriate events,” dnd is pretty much a sandbox yk? Even rules can be restructured depending on campaigns
Noooot really?? More so the difficulty of a spell to perform
So in that way higher level spells are rarer
nah man... these ideas never existed before i said them (my flavour)
Sure you can see it that way, spellcasting is like a gun where you can use different ammo, you have more pistol ammo (level 1 slots) obviously but less rockets (level 5 slots) for example
That is a good way to put it yes
Low level spells can be casted with higher level spell slots, but not all spells scale with spell slots so sometimes its an inefficient use of resources
I assumed u were talking about the video game fear and hunger LOL
wait so the the slots run out? or do you mean go on cooldown
The slots can run out yes, they are regained on a long rest
I’d say cooldown! They regenerate
also i thought that you attain them gradually so 1 lvl1 then 2 lvl1 then 2 lvl 1 and 1 lvl2 but you are saying that i can have more lvl1 than lvl5
You can cast low level spells at a higher slot level, but you can’t cast high level spells at a lower slot level
a long rest is like what 2 turns?
I’m wanting to get back into dnd. I’ve played it twice, but both times were bad experiences and I do not want to let those ruin it for me.
Well yes the higher level the spell slots the less you have on average
No a long rest is a period of time where you take a literal break from campaigning in the game world
Any advice on where I can start playing, to ease back into things?
A long rest is the equivalent of going to bed
A short rest lasts for around 1 hour, a long rest lasts for around 8 hours
WOAH
You don't literally count the time to short/long rest though, you just ask the DM if you can short/long rest and then settle in
So a wizard can only fart 1 fire ball then go to bed ?
That is certainly a way to put it
No cuz cantrips exist
i still dont understand these fully
Cantrips u cast for free, no slots needed
A spellcaster isn't useless the moment they spend all spell slots
they are like rentals?
Going back to this metaphor, cantrips are special ammo that's infinite
they dont take slots?
Cantrips can be used infinitely yes
Like how in some zombie shooter games your pistol has infinite ammo but the rest of your non-pistols have limited ammo
Nope! There are like. Three tiers to magic.
Cantrips
Slotted spells
Ritual casting
They each r kind of their own thing
Careful, they can trip you up, hehe.
Now replace pistol with cantrips and non-pistols with spell slots
Thats my show for tonight, goodbye
Thank you cthuluwu
Dnd magic system so simple to understand after staring at some larp ones for a while LOL
wonderfull show
It can be confusing at first. Especially if ur playing something like a wizard and not a sorcerer. But you get the hang of it :]
im playing a warlock supposedly
Nods nods
Easier than a wizard for sure
WAIT, abilty checks are excatly like the gameplay in dispatch right?
I do that
It sure is gambling
Basically: you can get additions to your roll based on your skills
Your character might be very good or very bad at a few things
Difficulty class, DM decides how hard checks are
If I ate rotten food I have to roll a constitution roll with a difficulty class (DC) of 15
If I fail, bad things happen (I take damage and am bedridden), if I succeed, good things happen (I can keep going just fine)
When your party has multiple +7s in skills you begin to realize that above 20 is less rare than the dm would think
but mr spidy what the actual F is your pfp
its hurting how it looks so familiar yet its nonsense
Mike from monsters inc with cyclops getting evaporated by Jean gray overlaying
LOL
My pfp is always Mike just with different things layered on top
it looks like a purple duck looking right with pink lips thats wearing a pale tanktop and has a blue bandana
i saw him
he is wearing his blue inc hat
i hate you btw...
This doesn’t seem very new comer questions. Can you guys move this elsewhere?
but this is my second day interacting with DnD
I’m but a little guy!!
But yeah. If you have more questions, the people of the chat will respond
If not, best to move channels big agree
I know nothing about DND but I need online friends because I make so many characters. Help.
Tell me, how does one acquire an online DND session?
can one counter tremorsense by standing still?
Uses vibrations and no usual person can completely calm their body and stop all functions of movement like the heart beating so no
Now if you levitate, that’s another story
Not by the rules no. To beat it, you would either need to meet one of the conditions that breaks tremorsense (as listed in the sense's description) or a specific feature that says you can't be detected by tremorsense
Anything with a flying speed
how does one acquire flying speed?
is there a flying race?
or contraptions that allow flight?
whats bludgeoing?
There's a lot of methods. Some species like Aarakocra or 2024 Dragonborn can get a flight speed with certain restrictions. Some spells grant fly speed like the aptly named spell Fly. Some items grant them too like a Broom of Flying
And Bludgeoning is another damage type
You should really read the rules lol
I LITTEARLY AM
i finished play the game guide and creat a character
is there any thing else that i need
can i flavour the warlocks arcane focus as hand signs or am i not imagining what arcane focus is correctly?
its just him locking in right?
That should be fine. As long as it doesn't affect gameplay or story, "flavor is free"
Mechanically, an arcane focus is a tool wielded in one hand needed for spells with a material component.
Well, focus is a physical object, like a rod or a crystal that helps you channel your magic
To use one, you need to have a free hand to touch it, so flavoring it as hand signs would largely work for flavor, though there is a slight difference of being able to lose your focus object, but not your hands

thank u, would u advise anything else
me and my dan dont know how to dm
@silk falcon can u be my dm
nah im not a big fan of dming tbh
oh ok
You can find a DM by looking at the #looking-for-players channel as that's DM's needing players
Respond to indicate your interest in the thread or private message the game poster (not Monodrone as that's the bot used to create the LFG posts)
You can also learn to DM.
"Discern whether someone is cheating" cheat what??
also is "calligrapher's supplies" a one time use thing
no, it's a persistant item/tool
though you might need to buy ink and parchment/paper depending on your DM
though a 10gp bottle of ink is good for like 200~300 pages of writing IIRC
any1 interested in joing a new campaign satursday every other week at 1pm Atlantic time
#find-a-game has instructions on how to post to #looking-for-players
I dont seem to have access to post anything there
Can someone help me understand how important my class skills and background are?
I just imagine what skills the character I'm building would have and just pick those, but I wonder if I should prioritise them having synergy with my own class and my gameplan instead? Like filling I'm the gaps in stats or something
The usual idea is picking skills your stats support. Like athletics as a barbarian or something. You're free to do whatever though
skills really depend on class and what you want to do with your class
Hello all would love some advice. I tried dnd and found it very fun but also stressful I don’t do well with micro management of wealth I would play at a game cafe however so it’s a natural part of a campaign. I actually left a campaign I was a part of for only 1 session because it caused me anxiety to know I had to earn and save gold
I was just curious if anyone has any advice on how best to deal with this I have been running it through my mind and came up with some possibilities like I could maybe use my phone and dnd beyond also even though it’s not optimal I could round up and take that off rather than taking a mix of gold silver and bronze off just pay a little more
group funds are good. often games of mine have collected a large pool of gold. the main thing with that is you will get a little resistance to use it for large personal things. probably simple things like healing potions for the group or arrows ect are automatic yes.
Cool tyvm
Also work with your DM in private if needed and explain it. Hopefully they may just shift a little so it’s easy in ya, like hey to stay at the inn including food is one gold and never mention the other coins anytime you need to buy stuff and only hand out gold
It's the on where you can quickly asses your surroundings right? But is it used often?
How often are you in a situation where it's applicable?
Probably the most used skill
Likely the MOST common skill in D&D IMHO
Is pursuing multiple DM looking for players a good move? I feel like a bad person cause what if they decide to take me in and I say I'm already in with another
coming from a nearly 40 year veteran
Unlike other skills its effectiveness does not drop if multiple team member stacks it
Ideally the whole party should have perception proficiency if they can help it
Oh, how important is team synergy?
Some people play in multiple games
The game talked about how the ideal crew would be
A paladin a fighter a rogue and a wizard
Nah, there's way more players than DMs. Some amount of spread is reasonable. You can boost your chances by telling a DM what sounds exciting about their game in particular, why you want to play with them and what you hope to bring to their table.
Though having at least one spellcaster helps
A full martial team could get rough
A full spellcaster team though is perfectly fine
I don't know what I did wrong? I met a DM and after some questions he just said he didn't think this will work out
I mean I did ask like 10 questions about the time because it wasn't clear to me and his reasoning was "communication"
It's fine tho, I'm sure I'll find another
Did you post in looking for a DM as well, listing what your needs are? May help ya find some one too
No I just want to join an already established party that lacks one player. I couldn't go back to the post I found at first without scavenging through messages
How does one post even? I don't see a post option that #
Now what
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Hard to say, could be many things, but only the DM knows, but there's really no point in dwelling on it. DMs are gonna have a LOT of players wanting to join, so they do need to cut out all but the handful that are gonna be playing, so keep on trying!
I’ve heard jokes about artificers being used by DND vets
I assume there’s reasons newcomers don’t use them
i'm new to DnD and would like to try a game before committing, are there any one shot discord servers? or whatever it is?
Dunno, Artificer seems like it's a pretty common class that interests even new people, from what I've seen
If I had to hazard a guess, it's either people jumping in claiming the class is complicated (which I guess it can be), or DMs not allowing them in their games, which some don't (And I can also kinda undertsand this, often in my experience it seems to lead to more futuristic feeling stuff, rather than fantasy)
Could look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for games.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I wanted to use Artificer when I first joined DnD but I was told it was a garbage class so I didn't touch it until I became more knowledgeable with DnD. Now it's one of my top 2 favorites.
Do i do this command here?
Yes you can run the bot commands right in this channel
Type /looking-for and pick one of the options that pops up that best represents what kind of LFG post you want to create
Would I personally recommend Artificer to new people? Why not? You can change up spells on long rests and it's very versatile and pretty straight forward. Most magic item plans are also good.
I will always recommend people just play the class they are most interested in, and not to worry about complexity
You have the advantage of only having to figure out one class at a time, along with the basic rules, so as long as you're interested in learning, any class will work out fine 😌
hi guys!! my friends and i just started playing dnd and i decided to be dm for them and i was just wondering how you guys determine how players level up? i’ve seen on reddit to use xp and stuff but how can i determine how much xp should be enough to level up?
what is usually a "game style" descreption?
i dont know what to write in it
same thing applies to how i would like to play
Do you favor more exploration kind of D&D? More mystery? Maybe more combat focussed? More social roleplay heavy? Grimdark? Heroic fantasy? Interparty conflict is good?
There should be a table for when you level up by XP, and monsters list how much they give, which is divided between players
Though easier way to level up is "Milestone leveling", where the DM simply lets the players level up when it is deemed appropriate, like clearing a powerful enemy or a great challenge (usually listed in pre-made adventures when that happens)
I want to play D&D but i have NO clue where to start, any advice?
a combat heavy world is cool but i dont want it to overshadow the interactions my character can have with his party and the world. so is balanced good for now?
So you can note that in your preferred style of play
it doesnt have to be clean like 70/40 combat/roleplay? right?
i can type it more in detail
Some folks list it that way but you can say "prefer more combat focussed games"
Welcome! Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Feel free to ask questions as you run into things
"I'm looking forward to a game which combines tactical combat and meaningful in-character roleplaying."
thank youuu!! my friends have the starter set and it said after like 2 adventures they should be lvl 4 already and i’m blanking on how much xp the monsters they fought dropped since i don’t have the monster cards it came w haha
I mean even the "clean" numbers can mean vastly different things to different people
70/30 split between roleplay and combat could easily mean either total time time or number of encounters, or just vague guess based on a person 😛
Good for giving a general idea, but definitely not strict math there by anyone lol
what are ways the game is played
You could try looking them up on D&D Beyond, or assign level-ups at what you feel are the right intervals (milestone) like Saragonvoid described.
i did slight research and there are sites like VTT which helps immerse by creating a virtual tabletop. and then you can just imagine and roll a d20 on google. but thats what i know is there more? maybe even ones that are better suited for a begginer?
On the player side, most VTTs are much of a muchness. Once you've had five minutes to figure out how to move your token about you're basically in business.
If you've got any preferences for how you communicate, that can go there too. Do you want a game with Discord voice or Skype? Would you prefer to play by text? Are you open to exploring options?
didnt know muchness is a word
Everything's a word as long as it words an idea of what it's trying to word 😎
chat what's the difference between feats and features
"To use that property, you must have a feature that lets you use it." where do i read about the feature
feats and features are the same thing, "feat" is just the shortened form of features, which primarily come from your class or background
if you could provide a bit more context I might to be able to answer this for you
Mastery. Each weapon has a mastery property, which is defined in the “Mastery Properties” section later in this chapter. To use that property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
also where do i read about the damage types
Ah, so for that classes like Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger and Rogue have a feat called "Weapon Mastery"
when i have players roll for ac, when its a hit do i have them do an attack roll to attack on a creatures armor or does the armor just break automatically since it was a hit?
does that mean if my character is like a sorcerer I won't have to worry about that stuff?
In the Rules Glossary of the player's handbook/dndbeyond free rules there is a section labelled "Damage Types"
Correct as Sorcerers don't have "Weapon Mastery"
How can a game be Not gay safe?
i see other players require it? do they mean that the party members be tolerate towards it?
what do I do with this space? https://ibb.co/wrYRG1Hc
are you creting a character?
yeahhh i've never done this before
I just assumed that the dm is homophobic or something idk
wdym by roll for AC?
Typically if you want to damage a creature/object you make an attack roll and if the roll + bonuses are equal to the creature/object's AC then you hit, at which point you'd make a damage roll.
wanna share progress and info that can help further down?
im just like poking at bits and pieces at it. i skip over stuff i don't understand and i just come back to it late
idk im equally clueless so
to my understanding players would roll a d20 to see if they would hit or miss a creatures ac i think? so after if they hit for the creatures ac does it mean the armor of that creature is just automatically broken and their next attack roll goes for their hp? sorry if that’s a lot lolol that’s like the only way i can think of wording
You fill in what the proficiencies are, which for a sorcerer would just be putting "simple weapons" in the weapons slot, as they don't have armour or tool proficiencies unless getting it from your species/background
yayy so like all i do is just fill in that and leave the rest blank?
No you make an attack roll against the creatures AC each time you make an attack then if you hit AC you roll damage, breaking the armour would be different and upto the DM on if they would allow the player to attempt to physically break the armour, which would mean a lower AC to hit
if simple weapons is the only proficiencies you got for that section, then yes, #character-discussion will be a better place for asking questions on character creation
ohhhh okay
interesting!! i’ve been playing very wrong then ty 😭
If you need help you can also ask me I am not going to talk a lot in this chat at all sense I am not a newcomer i acually really know how to play so I want to respect the rules so if you want just DM me
what is a good stat spread for a warlock?
Warlock
Cast spells derived from occult knowledge
Warlocks quest for knowledge that lies hidden in the fabric of the multiverse. They often begin their search for magical power by delving into tomes of forbidden lore, dabbling in invocations meant to attract the power of extraplanar beings, or seeking places of power where the influence of these beings can be felt. In no time, each Warlock is drawn into a binding pact with a powerful patron. Drawing on the ancient knowledge of beings such as angels, archfey, demons, devils, hags, and alien entities of the Far Realm, Warlocks piece together arcane secrets to bolster their own power.

mine is

10 charisma
12 consitution
13 wisdoM
14 dexterity
15 intelgince
these were made to match my character in my opnion not for the game really
Okay - just note that charisma is the warlocks spellcasting ability
low charisma won't help your warlock
so i should swap it with what?
Inteligence IMO
Now its excatly like the array... but my character is smart
hi im new and i never playd dnd before
That's fine - 10 is average intelligence. Your warlock smartness perhaps comes from the powers they get from their patron and isn't representative by the normal intelligence ability.

can i swap a short sword from piercing to slashing? (I CANT JUST PICK SCIMITAR NO)
its for immersion reasons
Not as a default option, no
Take the scimitar as the item for game rules, describe it how you like. A heavy-bladed gladius, perhaps?
but the sword proficency gives me vex? and it allows me to do a double hit which is cool
what does the scimitar give?
Scimitar gives Nick, which lets you make an attack with a second light weapon without using your bonus action.
This isn't for the warlock, is it?
What class is the character you're creating?
Warlock...
the character was said to be able to also be effective in close combat due its pact of the blade
i dont fully understand proficency but i,d supposes its basically experince with a certain weapon
but i didnt check if the pact of the blade applies that
Ah, good luck, it does. But you don't get weapon masteries, I'm afraid.
Proficiency is a bonus based on your character's level that applies to the named skills. This could be Acrobatics or History, adding to your somersaults or knowledge of the royal line of succession; a weapon or weapon type like longswords or martial weapons, or your spellcasting.
In the case of attack rolls, proficiency adds to your roll to hit. For a level one character the bonus is +2.
so i shouldnt care for masteries like Vex as it wont come to a warlock class as its exclusive to combat oriented classes
so ill just go with my shortsword thank you for clearing things up
The specific feat to be able to use weapon masteries is called "Weapon Mastery", and as I said to someone else earlier, it can be found in classes like Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger & Rogue.
Hai uhh..I’m HIGHLY new to D&D and I really wanna know how to play so any help making a character and overall experience is appreciated

Ahh thanks!!
is it ok if my first ever game is a homebrew?
i still dont understand what "homebrew" implies but i suppose its just not a story written by the DnD creators right?
maybe something created by the DM himself
Like the game setting is homebrew or like you're using your own custom made magic items, spells, monsters, and classes?
no the DM is offering a homebrew
Homebrew means created by the community, not by D&D or a third-party publisher
oh so its fine ten right?
im not sure its His homebrew
he also has a form to applicants to fill which is really cool. i like the dedication
If the DM is doing it, no issue. If it's a new to D&D player trying to create howmbrew that can be an issue as they won't know how to balance what they create so that it's reasonable mechanically and balanced at the game table.
Im super new to dnd and I’ve been meaning to make an Autognome character to play as in the future are there anything I should know about them before I write their backstory and character sheet?
"I want to play D&D, but I don't want to VC/depend on a time/etc!"
Does this sound like you? Do you want to play Dungeons and Dragons, but have your own reasons as to why you can't be in a call/whatever? Well let me introduce to you my very accessible way of playing this classic TTRPG!
THE BASICS
Text-Based D&D (TBDND/TBD&D) is a system based on dice rollers. It is also a system is also heavily focused on typing, of course. Its strengths are in the Roleplay aspect of D&D, meaning combat can admittedly become clunky, but when you learn to balance these you can create a fun and accessible environment for people to play Dungeons and Dragons with.
CHARACTERS
"How do characters work?!" I hear you ask. On Discord, there is a very useful bot known as Tupperbox, which allows you to plug in a set of text characters you'd like to use to "speak" as a character! But really all you need is just to be able to type, you don't need the bot :)
