Wish spell is a high level spell that altars reality in ways like a genie from myth does
Wish is a 9th level spell, the most powerful one in the game. One of its listed abilities is to grant a few creatures resistance to a specific damage type
ohkk
Are we sure we want to teach a goblin all of this (lol)
haha lol
also one more thing, are there certain situations where I can apply feats? Or can I apply them in any campaign?
Unless the dm says no feats all feats are allowed. Its always good to run your character by the dm before the game just to make sure it vibes with the campaign they have planned.
Good day
Feats are always active. They’re special things your character can take at certain character levels in place of taking the ability score improvement feat
Then its your call! All feats are pretty good to go, some can become broken with the right combinations but thats all aspects of games
Well, that’s mostly true. Some of the feats from setting source books, like the dragonmark feats in Eberron, specifically say that the the feats have a prerequisite that you must be playing in a campaign that takes place in the correct plane. You cannot take dragonmark feats in a Forgotten Realms campaign, for example
You may also get feats through other means. All backgrounds get a special kind of feat called an origin feat, and humans get an extra origin feat, as an example
And yeah as Colossus said certain feats come with prerequisites that your character must fulfill in order to take
When I dm I enjoy giving a feat or two away through out the campaign as roleplayjng rewards
oh ok. But is it a good idea to allow feats if I'm running my first campaign, with first time players?
Yup absolutely fine
Yeah, I would allow it.
Feats add a lot of flavor options to characters that aren't in the base rules such as your person likes to make breakfast for people and believes all things are possible on a full stomach could take the chef feat.
Under 2014 rules they were technically an optional rule but even before they were made standard in 2024 it was extremely uncommon for a table to not allow feats
okok noted
im currently prepping for my first ever dnd game that i will also be DMing for my first time player friends
so just wanted to clear a few things out of the way
Feel free to dm me during you game if you have any questions
oh tysm
So I'm very much new to this sphere and trying to make my first character. I already have one in mind and he's a shaman but I can't seem to translate that into classes. I'm thinking of going with druid (maybe circle of the shepherd for the spritual stuff) but I feel like that lacks the connection to community and the leadership role they fulfill in tribal communities, so any tips would be helpful
its gonna be a few months until it starts tho, cuz we all have things to do, so I'm just prepping in my free time to make sure I'm ready for the big day
One thing that you learn as you get more into this hobby is that a character’s job is different from their class. If you want your character to be a spiritual leader that’s part of a community, you can do that with any character, no matter what class they are. It sounds like Magic is an important part of this character concept for you, but other than that you’re free to explore the character however you like. My recommendation for what class to pick would either be Cleric, Warlock, or Sorcerer. Probably in that order
Ooh yeah. It's just that in many interpretations of shamans they draw powers from spirits and nature which a druid covers but also from the communities they're in and I don't know how to do that
Also do you mean multiclass into those or just have them as the main class?
Druid doesn’t require you to draw power from any source - you have spells, you cast them, you get to say where they’re from
please dont multiclass as a beginner
I meant those were my top choices for you to pick as your mono class
Question as I’m gonna play warlock and I got kinda confused by something with the leveling in the leveling chart for the warlock as I gain a level for example at level 5 it days 2 spell slots is that me gaining 2 spell slots or is it my spell slots staying at 2
Like do I add 2 spell slots or is my spell slots just 2 now
Okay that makes sense
So a 5th level Warlock "only" has two 3rd level spell slots.
Barbarian Path of the Wild Heart might work as it has some druid abilities. Barbarians often have a strong connection to their clans. But sub-classes don't kick in until level 3. You can get around this by taking the Magic Initiate feat using druid which gives you access to two cantrips and a level 1 spell which you could pick Animal Friendship or Speak with Animals (which you get at level 3 so you can replace a spell then) which is Shaman-like. As a barbarian you could "communicate" with your clan ancestors. You would need to work with your DM on that and how it might work say through signs you see or dreams etc.

that's a link of your computer lol
maybe upload it to drive and send the link from there
understood. if you want people to check it out, there's a character channel

Welcome! Have you read through the basic rules yet?
Yes

hi guys I'm trying to figure out a character and I can't seem to find out which class uses guns can anyone help me out
Pistols and Muskets are considered to be martial ranged weapons, so any class with proficiency in martial weapons can use them. Artificers are traditionally thought of as the class that "specializes" in firearms, but rogues and fighters can also make very good use of them
Just remember that pistols and muskets are both very expensive, so there aren't any classes that can afford to pick them as part of their starting equipment. You'll need to earn gold in game to actually buy one
Artificers can bypass this issue though, since they have the ability to make some weapons and armor out of thin air
Hi im new to D&D and would like some insight on my first character
Welcome. Have you started the character and you want someone to review it, or are you trying to figure out where to start?
i have just finished making it
i would like someone to review it as i am new to all of this
Great. Then you should share the character in #character-discussion. That's the best place to get feedback on your characters
thank you
I’m starting my first ever campaign with my friends irl and I’m so excited but kinda worried that they might not take it seriously 😭
Figuring out the stats of my character is so confusing
We can help you with that! What stat generation method are yall using?
Point buy, standard array, rolled or homebrew?
Don't worry to much if your friends don't take it seriously, if you're having fun and they're having fun the things are going right.
@floral meteor help can be found here

So, what playstyle are you looking to play?
Hi, I'm new to D&D and just wanted to introduce my self since I just joined the server. I've played a one-shot campaign once and loved it. I have also played some BG3 with a friend and that was also fun.
I just want to play D&D

So do we, but you gotta have a character
I'm French and in France there aren't many "clubs" D&D
You can play online, maybe
But first, learn the rules and make a practice character
I don't know what could correspond to me
If you don’t have one, do you have a trope in fantasy you like? Or, do you have a vision of a character you may want to play?
A holy warrior, a wise seer, a master swordsman…
?tag new paladin
Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 10
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 12
Cha. 14
Likes: Defense
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
um 😞
Dunno?
No
Tysm I’ll try my best
Also I'd suggest asking your friends which method your all going with for determining stats as you want everyone to be doing the same thing. If you're all indecisive about which method I'd recommend just going with Standard Array.
Please, just call me Nugget
No, I’m Nugget. Who’s this The Best fellow?
You 🫵
I’ll definitely ask thank you
cat, you might find lots of funny memes of cats playing D&D. be prepared.
Hello, I'm new here, can someone explain how I can start?

well, what do you already know of playing a tabletop roleplaying game?
-# Also, you have good taste (Omniscient Readers Viewpoint is great)
I understand that I have to make a character, engage with DM and world through dice rolls. I know I can go through quests and develop my character.
Thanks
also is it also possible to make a custom class, like 'Bard of Anarchy'?
that is actually a great start. Nugget of Truths gave you some really good information on the next step
ok
before making custom classes, try playing the regular ones to get a feel for it.
Please, just call me Nugget
You should try reflavouring already existing classes and subclasses. For example, that sounds like a whispers bard
there's a wildmagic sorcerer that can get into some pretty anarchy and chaos situations through magic. you can style them as a musician or actor or singer
I learned about the class 'Bard of Anarchy
i'm just not familiar with that subclass
from a book I read, Apparently they're goal as the name suggests is to cause chaos in the world and deals with probablility
That’s a homebrew subclass
homebrew means not tranditonal sublclass?
Means it’s not official
I highly recommend playing an official class and subclasses for your first time
it doesnt mean its not allowed (that would be up to your dungeon master)
you have been very helpful thank you!
but any character can take actions and have motivations to cause chaos in the world around them.
you never know. the internet is a pretty big and wild place
so whats the reason your bard wants to cause chaos around them?
Also, backstory and stuff is cool, but this type of style might be disruptive for some campaigns
Although there are examples of chaotic type characters working, like Jester from The Might Nein.
the important thing is to keep in mind the fun of others at the table, including the DM.
Hello, i saw a lot of content abt dnd but dont know a lot, anyone can explain the steps?

well, at its most basic interpretation D&D is a bunch of people sitting at a table and building a group story. each person takes control of a single character in that story except for one of them who controls everything else in the world. the players all use the same rules they agreed on, and roll dice to resolve uncertainty and make things very interesting.
ohh interesting thanks
actually, i described pretty much any tabletop roleplaying game. D&D is just one of many versions of rules that can be used. each different sets of rules has its own strengths and weaknesses.

hey guys! i'm looking at the Armor of Agathys spell, and it shows it should be a 1st level spell from the basic player's handbook, but i'm not finding the option to prepare it on DndBeyond. I am creating a level 3 warlock character right now and the spell fits pretty thematically with my character. is this something related to weird dndbeyond rules or am i misunderstanding?
its easy to make mistakes, but also easy to recover from mistakes. its all using words and rolling dice and fairly fault tolerant since everyone at the table can agree to just "undo" the mistake if needed. or roll with the mistake if it actually makes things more fun or interesting.
i've played bg3 so i'm relatively familiar with basic dnd mechanics but i've never used actual dnd software before. pardon me if i'm a little clueless lol
do you have the 2014 player's handbook or the 2024 player's handbook?
well, i know BG3 was built off of the 2014 rules and there were some spell changes between 2014 and 2024. people more familiar with 2024 would be a better help than i would.
Do you have the player’s handbook?
Or do you just have the free basic rules
Easier way to phrase it, have you bought a book?
i have not, but the DM has
does everyone at the table need their own copy or something
Yes, unless the DM has the subscription to share
That, or just write it down, copied from the book
odd that you need a subscription, thanks
how much does buying the rulebook add, then? since i see all 12 classes anyway
is it just spells and subclasses
And rules
what do rules do for me as a player
You…follow them?
It would give you an idea on what you can and can't do, the player's handbook is full of rules
Question about a core thing I always hear but never fully understand when someone says for example 3d10 is that 3 throws of a 10 sided dice?
Or like 1d20 is 1 throw of a 20 sided dice
3d10 is 3 d10 rolls, that can be the same dice rolled 3 times or 3 different dice rolled once each.
The number before "d" is the number of dice/times rolled and the number after the "d" is what dice you would use.
Understood
I just want to confirm this, so if you successfully hit an enemy, does the damage from your weapon correspond to the hitpoints of the enemy? for example, if a sword did 7 damage and the enemy had 8, would it remain on 1 hitpoint?
yes
im really new i had this idea of playing dnd with my friends a few days ago and I think ill have to be dm since no one seems to want to learn all the rules lol
Most won't be able to learn all the rules before their first time playing, and even when you're seasoned players you'll still forget things. Critical Role were bad for it when it came to concentration checks in their second campaign.
ill just try to focus on having fun and knowing the base rules
That's probably the best way to go.
this is like 40 minutes late, but are you and your group playing at a physical table with physical books? if that's the case ask your DM to borrow their book. this whole unlocking and subscription campaign stuff is talking about the digital version on DnDBeyond.
yeah we're playing digital unfortunately
half the party's all the way across the country 💔
if that's the case, there needs to be a subscription involved to share stuff in the campaign. normally its the DM who would get the subscription so they could share their books with the campaign members. that way they can use options from the books related to the specific campaign they are running.
i know, it sucks. i stick with physical books so all i have are the freebies on DnDBeyond.
Hellooo!~ I hope everyone is well <3

if i buy a digital rulebook on dndbeyond, would that then carry over to other hosting sites like roll20 or do i have to buy it separately every single time
No - Roll20's is a different product. Think of it a bit like a video game where if you buy the Playstation version it doesn't give you the Nintendo version.
Hey, I am back. Can anyone tell me where I can find a more world-map oriented comunity or DND game I can play which I open?
#dnd-maps is our channel for all things D&D maps
If you mean Virtual Table Top (a digital play space to play D&D) you can check out Roll20, Demiplane, and Foundry among the many different VTT systems out there.
thanks!
mm that's,,,annoying. alright, thank you for your help though
Hi I have made a lightning sorcerer but there are no lightning attacks in actions
I also have a dagger that isn’t there
All Thats there is:
chromatic orb
Unarmed strike
Shocking grasp is a cantrip
Hello
If you’re talking about your character sheet on the D&D Beyond website then it sounds like you simply haven’t prepared your spells yet, and you haven’t equipped your weapon
hey all! looking at starting D&D with some of my friends for the first time.
what all classes have access to a Goading attack? I think I'm going to end up with a more tank-y role, which doesn't particualrly exist in 5e if I understand correctly, so I'm trying to figure out what I'd like to make character-wise
The best is ancestral barbarian which can make a creature(s, don’t remember exactly how to works) have disadvantage to all your allies, unless their also an ancestral barbarian
ooh, interesting! I'll have to check that out. thanks!
It’s official 2014 and UA 2024
as a level 1 Human Cleric
how many spells and how many Cantrips can i have ?
3 cantrips
4 spells
2 spell slots
i can have 4 spells
but only 2 ready each time
and the 3 cantrips is ready at all time
did i get that correct ?!
No, you have 4 spells that can be prepared
The cantrips is correct tho
so what do you mean by 2 spell slots ?
You can use two level 1 spells per long rest
Spell slots are like DnD’s version of mana. Think of them as magick canisters/shells: a level 1 spell slot can be used to cast a level 1 spell, and a level one spell only. Same with a level 2, 3 or four spell slot, and etc.
aaaaah. i get it now. Thanks mate 🫡
Glad to help!
and one more thing:
how does "Spare the Dying" Works?
You touch a living creature that has 0 hit points. The creature becomes stable. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.
can i get an example ?
the wording confuses me 😵💫
They have 0hp but aren’t dying
When a PC falls to 0 hp, they are in a state of near death where they're incapacitated and will die unless they're stabilized
oh, i thought 0 hp is instant death
Some DMs allow you to not die instantly
Depends on the situation ofc, if you're shoved off a cliff that's just instant death
Instant death happens when you take damage equal to your max hp after you are at 0
But if you're stabbed to death during combat you could be in this limbo state
Like if you have 6hp and take 12 damage you die instantly, but 11 you fail one death save
And I believe excess damage is reset every turn
Every turn, the PC rolls a death saving throw for up to 5 turns, you can succeed up to 2 times during these rolls which delay the time before you die (assuming nothing else speeds it up or slows it down)
After succeeding twice, every other roll is a fail, and on the third fail you auto die
so "Spare the Dying" does put you in a state in which you dont need to do a save throw ?!
Spare the Dying basically recovers you from this state and allows you to stand up again at 1 0 hp
aaaaaaaaaah
No you have 0hp but aren’t dying you still need healing or a one hour rest to regain 1hp
so you at 0, but don't need to do saving throws.
but will need to het heals, otherwise when the spell ends ---> do saving throws ?
im sorry people im kinda dum
No, you’ll regain 1hp at the end of a short rest, I may be misremembering it might be a long rest
It fine everyone is from time to time and the only way to not be is to ask questions
ok ok. lemme phrase it this way:
we in a middle of a fight, one of our teammate gets hit --> goes to 0 HP
can i cast "Spare the Dying" ?!
if yes? Does he/she Stand up and is able to fight ?!
man this thing is confusing as hell
Alternatively just cast healing word on them lol
Pushing someone above 0 hp while dying instantly revives them
thats what im saying. then whats the point of this spell ?!
No, it’s more for if you can’t heal right now and you need a breather
It stops them from rolling death saving throws
Spare the Dying stabilizes the PC but they're still unconscious
After 1-4 hours (a short rest lasts 1 hour so really its up to the DM on whether its a short or long rest) the PC wakes up and gets healed for 1 hp
Healing them will prematurely wake them up without resting or waiting out those hours
Taking damage will restart the death saving throw
aaaaaaaaaah i finally get it
thanks Guys 🤝

puts them in a state in which ---> they are not conscious / not dying (no need for save throws)
so we can heal them later or Long/Short Rest they go to 1 HP
Yup!
As to why you'd use Spare the Dying over Healing Word
Spare the Dying is a cantrip and doesn't cost spell slots
But Healing Word is superior otherwise
imma have both then
dumb and reckless party = more dead people
so i guess i need that 😅
Hello guys, I'm new
Like i haven't even played a game of dnd new
I'm trying to create a Greninja based D&D character, so i would appreciate some help
Rogue is a good place to start
yeah, i already rolled for his stats, and know his race is a blue Grung
i rolled a nat 20
for dex, and +2 to dex for Grung race makes it a +6 dex modifier
and i knew he would be a rogue immediately
Ehh you might need to reread how stats are generated. You dont roll a d20 and can’t get over a +5 total until the very end
yeah, as i said i am new, so i dont know much about anything
Yeah, you have a score (usually bigger number, usually from 8 to 17 at level 1), and a modifier, which is the smaller number with a + or a -, since it modifies your roll
Your modifier is based on the score, and races increase your score, not the modifier
I think if no one helps you up. Raw ya go to 1 hp after 1d4 hours
Raw.
You usually roll 6 sets of 4d6 and drop the lowest. So max score is 18. With point buy its max is 17^ like said above. Also dont forget to use Tasha's if it applied at your table. Tasha's allows you to change the stats of the races you pick from. To whatever you want a +2 and +1 in
ok, thanks for the info
How accurate is this:
- Barbarian: Lots of health, lots of damage.
- Bard: Inspiring leader who uses instruments to cast spells.
- Cleric: Divine wizard (also healer).
- Druid: Nature wizard.
- Fighter: Basic sword and shield guy.
- Monk: Fights with fists and moves very fast.
- Paladin: Divine smiting fighter with heavy armour and aura magic.
- Ranger: Nature hunter.
- Rogue: Sneaky thief guy.
- Sorcerer: Born with magic.
- Warlock: Gets magic by making a deal with a powerful being.
- Wizard: Learns magic through study.
Druid most versatile class in dnd. Without question. But yes a nature wizard per se
Even tho their the best healers I wouldn't call cleric the healer. Id call them the divine wizard. Or God's disciples.
thanks
The ranger is not necessarily a bow and arrow user. The "range" in the name doesn't refer to distance, but nature
They aren't any better with bows that something like fighter.
Although I don't have a good summarization to fit here that I can think of 🤔
Maybe more like a hunter?
Yeah nature hunters for a 2 word phrase id say
Hunter is more ideal then bow and arrow guy. Cause they di have favored foe and rp mechanically to actually hunt and kill things
(also the best class lol)
Ranger in my campaign is a drakewarden and he's a frontliner... so yeah they dont have to use bows
Easily druids for sure
good to know
also, easily rogues
My ranger was a swarmkeeper who dual wielded swords, and by the luck of rolls of hit points and squishy allies kinda ended up as the frontliner lol
Id say Bard is "Inspiring leader with instruments"
we Cleric, we go Life Domain
we heal, we resurrect stupid Barbarians that go head into the fight with the giant dragon 😁
Id throw something with inspiring in there for sure
Nah! Twilight all day or peace
Or light if ya wanta go boom
if we wanna go BOOM we sure go light
Fireball on a cleric is crazy
but some parties need baby sitting
Aura of vitality for the W
FACTS
I always tell my dm with cleric or Druid. "Im not gonna play healer. But I will have capabilities of healing"
Then only prep healing word and aura of vitality lol. It works
i love that to be honest.
For paladin you literally need to put Divine Smiting fighter with aura magic
Cause their aura is everything
as I'm new to DND I was wondering if anyone could be like a 1 on 1 DM to help me understand "the game", in a more hands on first experience way?
@onyx light We cant teach people 1 on 1, but i'll link the free rules here

Hello! I’m new to D&D and would like to try playing for the first time.
I’m looking for a text-only or play-by-post game (I can’t use voice).
I’m happy to learn and be active. Thank you!
If anyone knows where i can try it like that that would be appreciated
You can try and find games in #looking-for-players that advertise as one of the two, tho it may take a while
Thank you
I'm also new to DnD, I'd like to pick it up
I am currently reading stuff about the classes and such, how do you choose what class you wanna be? I think I'd wanna be a Bard and go from there
Im still not sure if I wanna be a Bard or not, so like I said I wanna see how it goes from there. Are there any tips for newcomers or is it just: Find a party and play till you get it?
I actually made a lot of characters that looked interesting so i can join whatever the team needs. I mostly watched critical roll and some YouTube tutorials on how things work.
Ooh thats very smart actually lol
I'll also look into some Youtube tutorials, thanks!
Pick whatever sounds cool to you
A lot of campaigns are a hefty time investment. You're basically saying I am going to meet up with these people every/ every other week for the next year to do a shared hobby. If you just jump straight into something like Curse of Strahd with a bunch of strangers you are likely to be playing the first 3 sessions of Curse of Strahd multiple times because people are flakey AF with pick-up DND.
There are starter adventures, these are (not exhaustively) Lost Mines of Phandelver, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, Dragon of Icespire Peak, and Heroes of the Borderlands. Start to finish these only take 10-25 hours so they will only take a couple of months and you're likely to actually get through it.
My recommendation would be you find a community group that offers relatively frequent one shots. These are very short adventures that'll be done in 1 or 2 sessions. And then you look to do a larger campaign with the people you've met and A: Get on with, B: Turn up consistently.

Hello! Okay I have another question…
What are, for example 3d(number) dice rolls? And when do I use them?
Like 3d20 something… what are they and what are they used for?
Oh👀
But rolling multiple dice is usually for the damage of attacks or spells
I see!
2d6 for a greatsword for example
Okay, thanks!! I get it now

Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for play by post/text games. Sometimes westmarch games are text based as well.
Besides this server, check out the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Discover function!
Can others here volunteer to do this? I assume by listing in the Find a Game discussions?
If you're planning on running informative sessions, one shots, or test games, that'll have to be via #find-a-game , yeah.
idk if this is newcomer question but what does Wis do for moon druids? it doesnt seem that big of a deal besides spells?
You can concentrate on spells while wild shaped. So spells are useable to an extant
if i was to just focus on wildshape and what it could do tho wouldnt it be better to not go wis? i assume wis doesnt affect wild shape at alll right
Quite a lot! Even though Moon Druid is known for transforming into an animal and attacking, the vast, vast majority of their kit is still tied to spells that they cast both during and outside of Wildshape.
Additionally, a moon Druid's AC while Wildshaped is calculated with Wisdom, making them harder to hit.
At higher levels, their Constitution saving throws while Wildshaped get buffed by Wisdom, and they can teleport a number of times based on their Wisdom.
It's quite important!
wait their ac is what? (this si 2014 if it matters)
Better to deal more damage
Ah. Then no.
so you should still focus wis?
oh damn alr i was planning ngl to just use wild shape loll
The outdated Druid rules still heavily benefit using their spells, which is still at least 50% of your class's kit. You'll be casting tons of spells. It's not all Bear all the time
Hey, me and a friend a new to DnD and we wanna try DnD for a first time, does anyone have a campaign we can join with 2 that is preferably on friday.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Yeah, wis is also one of the best stats so generally good to have as high as you can
If you feel like you've got a good understanding of the Basic Rules, you can follow the link in the bot post above to find out how to get your search started on this server!
I have no clue on how to play...

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Could you explain to me what, "Hit point die D8 per (class) level" means?
-# You meaning everyone or specifically Dosh
That's the calculation that is used to determine how much your hit points (HP) increases every time you character levels up.
For a more in depth answer (if you want it) that means that every level you get, you roll a d8+your constitution modifier to determine how much healthy you get at that level, except at level 1 where it’s the max roll.Additionally, you also get hit dice that you can consume during a short rest to heal yourself.
I've just learnt how to play dnd today and I'm already addicted
what does e5 mean?
I would suggest taking a look at the #find-a-game channels. The basic rules are free on dnd beyond other than that you'll have to pay for content.
So it's not free?
-# the game itself
Yes and no, the basic rules are free, the rest isn't although you may not have to pay if you know someone that already has the books
books?
possibly referring to 5th Edition dnd.
Usually we say 5e
ah got it, thanks
Yes, you've got your core books, which are your Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual. If you're a player usually you'll be good to go with just the Player's Handbook.
Is anyone running a session that is welcoming to semi-new players? I Know how to use dnd beyond i've made a character that i haven't gotten the chance to use, i have the players manual i just need to learn a lot of the ins and outs and the best way to learn is by playing
There might be, you'll be able to find them over in the #find-a-game / #looking-for-players channels
Take a look at the games on offer. Most groups are fine with new folk joining. If it says "experienced players only," just scroll on.
To roleplay do you do it in first or third person?
I feel quite embarrassed thinking about doing it in first person tbh so yeah
Either, both, some players who may be hesitant to fully act in character will find it easier to talk in the 3rd person
Some times I do in character voice/mannerisms and other times I describe it in third person
Yeah, some of my characters were not good people. Much easier describing them from the director's chair than saying I do all these things.
It entirely depends on how you yourself want to roleplay, although chances are you'll switch between first and third person depending on what you're doing at the time.
I see, thanks
Are there some any dnd vocabs i should know? English isn't rly my first language
Maybe what’s listed in the free rules glossary. But a lot of this comes from reading, making a character (check 2nd chapter of free rules) and then playing.
I found my new favourite character sheet!
You start to pick up the terms and what they mean and how they’re used
I think it's called 5e
That’s the current D&D edition
I use it for all my characters
I guess i should pick up some fantasy books
I have some Brandon Sanderson books rotting in my room
Sanderson is a fun author to read imo - really liked his Mistborn series. But it’s a bit different than D&D
Still fun and can get you in the right headspace
I'm getting a starter kit for dnd soon and I'm gonna be making my own minis out of clay!
What author fantasy books do u recommend besides the basic lotr and harry potter stuff
There's the Impossible Quest series if you like medieval times or stuff like that but its pretty basic
You mentioned English is not your first language, so I'll recommend The Chronicles of Prydain, by Lloyd Alexander. Aimed at a younger audience, so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Also the Dragonlance Chronicles, by Tracey Hickman and Margaret Weiss, which is directly linked to a D&D setting of the same name.
To add to @loud pumice's comments, here is a link to the official website for the game. https://www.dndbeyond.com/en Not free, as the the 2024 Player's handbook lists at $60. Read a bit on the forum there, watch some youtube videos. There are plenty of folks still playing the 2014 version. I don't know how much you could find a 2014 Player's handbook on sale for on lets say, ebay, but probably less.
You can start playing D&D with just the free rules but yes, purchasing the books unlcoks more character options, items, spells, optional rules, settings and adventures.

Any dms looking for noob players
Lot's of DMs needing players in #looking-for-players
Also check #find-a-game for useful information on how to find a game, and also information on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
Thay all do it on Christmas which is there next game and I'm not available then
Many groups are fine with new to the game players but it does halep if you've spent some time familiarizing yourself with the game (e.g. check #learn-to-play and the free basic rules)
No they don't all do it on a holiday - keep scrolling up in #looking-for-players
There's also #looking-for-community which is other D&D Discord servers that may have games available to join
heyyyy, fresh meat here ^^ recently got interested in DND and wanted to try it out
DND is so extensiveee, but I have some sort of a grasp on the premise
hmmm, i'm a bit shy to walk up onto a table, since i'm heavily inexperienced, but i have read some of the rules. thought, the YT vid I watched said that experience is better gained in the actual scene
Welcome! That video isn't necessarily wrong, experience will definitely reinforce your game knowledge, but it is still important to have a good foundation.
If you've read a little bit about the rules, how much of the Basic Rules have you read thus far, if I may ask?
I started today and they had an app to show their character stats and they said they had it on the D&D beyond but I don’t know how to pull that up anyone know how to?
D&DBeyond is D&D's official toolset & content library. Part of that toolset is its character creator, and part of that is the ability scores tab where you'd use one of the 3 official methods to generate your character's ability scores
Wait…is it not on discord?
You can access DDB either via desktop at dndbeyond.com or via the mobile app
No, D&DBeyond isn't a discord server. There are certain discord bots that integrate D&DBeyond to a server such as Avrae, however.
Thank you for the help
Hi! I've familiarized myself with character information (classes and such), the common terms, surface-level magic usage, what to do during battles, and abilities. Hmm, I think I forgot to mention some, but it's just around those that I've learned so far ^^ I still need to read up more on equipments, the spells, some monsters, and how the math works
I've also made a character and her sheet, though I don't know if she holds up with how the world works haha
Just to give some example questions:
- If I asked you to make a Strength (Athletics) check, do you you what you would roll and what you would add?
- If I asked you to calculate the save DC of a level 1 Wizard with 17 Intelligence, would you know how to?
Uhhh, for the first one, a standard d20 + a modifier? For the second, I don't have a clue...
I think my second one is too specific actually, so don't worry about that unless you're planning to play a Wizard (or a spellcaster in general)
Haha, cleric actually ^^
I guess I can modify it to calculating a Cleric's spell save DC with a 17 in Wisdom 😅
If you want to start simple maybe go it on Martial class first so you can get the just of it then you can try bard so you can learn spells.
Martial classes do tend to be simpler, but no class is too complex for a newbie to learn
Fighter & Barbarian are honestly the most beginner friendly.
Hmmm, I have been heavily considering that, since magic seems very complex
But I really feel inclined to just boom boom, you know? Haha
Honestly it just depends you just got a take some time to read what each spell you have prepared does.
In any case I'd read up on the first section of the Basic Rules just to familiarize yourself with the foundation, particularly on d20 Tests and combat. The foundation laid there will underlie everything else you do in the game
Hmm, alright ^^ Thank you!
Plenty of people have started out playing Wizards, Clerics, etc. The 2024 rules also do a good job of recommending a starting spell loadout.
Also if you wanted to share your character's sheet feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion !
The latter's also the channel for talking about PCs in general
Hmm, alright! She's a bit messy, though. I'm not sure if the attributes I placed on her make sense, haha
Can't be that bad as long as you don't dump anything important for your stats
Can someone look over my character sheet and see if I'm doing it right?
I'm new and looking for a way to get started. I heard there are ways to play over discord.
Use Avrae then join a campaign
Thanks!!
Feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
Doesn't let me post here
Where did you make the sheet?
I just downloaded the image then filled it out from the essentials rule book
You can upload the file to a trusted file-sharing site like Google Drive and send the link to that
I've started making a (Blue)Dragonborn wizard, I want to see if im doing things right so far
Sure! Do you have a sheet to share or question to ask about them?
Here's the link, this is my first character i've started making on my own so far https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HYQfyH9bgURL83ZzEi9cTMK9KYzoueQO/view?usp=drive_link
Its asking for access
on whose?
Both of your links are privated actually 😅
i changed it now'
Are you manually filling it out or using D&DBeyond?
Im manually filling it out
There we go
There's only 2 things I'm noticing so far:
- You've written the bonuses to skills you're proficient in, but haven't marked the bubble to indicate proficiency. I'd also write in the bonuses to all of the skills, regardless of whether you're proficient or not.
- It seems you gave yourself a Quarterstaff +1, a magic item. Unless the DM says otherwise you can't start with magic items. Instead you'd start with the equipment provided by your class & background
I'll ask the DM about the quarterstaff
Ah a 2014 5e character! The immediate thing I noticed is that your Constitution modifier is incorrect. A Con score of 15 has a modifier +2, not +3.
It has a +2 bonus so its 17
Also make sure to select your spells! 3 cantrips + 6 1st level spells from the Wizard spell list
16 - 17 is +3 no?
Ah I see how you formatted it. Typically you'd bake in the ASI to the score, such that it would show a Con score of 17 in the display box
I haven't played before, so I will definitely be using the internet and Players Handbook heavily for selecting the spells
Did you roll for those stats btw?
I'd switch it to Standard Array or Point Buy unless your DM or eventual DM approves the array. Rolling is almost always done under DM supervision to prevent cheating
Yeah, I'm the DM, apparently, but I'm helping my brother out with his character sheet. It's my first one, so I'm not sure how I did.😅
Alright seems fine then, very lucky on the stat rolls
I did create the BBEG for my DM's campaign, do you want to see it?
I'd just make sure to write down the Battleaxe statistics in the attacks & spellcasting box, then make sure you write in their AC and current hit points
They dont like doing the work they just wanna play😢
If you have a statblock to share you'd want to post it in either #dm-discussion or #homebrew
They might also enjoy premades, though I assume they want a little more customizability than that
So the chain mail gives me 16 ac plus the 2 ac from the shield so thats a total of 18 ac no?
My brother wants pure Rng so if he where to roll Dookie 3 he would have kept it 😂
how do I join a campaign? I'm really new to dnd but I love watching critical role
If anyone knows that would be very very helpful
If you want to use this server to find a game the instructions can be found in #find-a-game !
You can get started with D&D for free with just the Basic Rules, linked in both this channel's pins as well as in #learn-to-play
D&D is a hard game
It does certainly have a lot of rules. My advice would be to take your time learning it and you don't have to read the entirety of the rulebook. Past the 1st 2 sections of the Basic Rules (Playing the Game and Creating a Character) you pretty much just need to read the rules of the class(es) you're interested in
I read some of the player handbook and I'm still confused...does that mean my destined role is barbarian? 😆
Oh wait but overall how was my Character sheet for my first time?
I’m not familiar with a “destined role”
it's was really good!
oh i'm making fun of my own intelligence, cause barbarians aren't exactly smart you know?
That…flew over my head
Well, what specifically are you confused about?
I can’t see your backstory, so I’m just confused about that. Also, how’d you get two +2’s on the side?
I get most of the character creation and the classes and whatnot. But the ac and dice math?
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC.
aw i can't send the cod blops ""the numbers mason" gif
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Basically, AC is the number an enemy has to meet or beat to beat you when they roll to hit you. It’s determined primarily by armor and/or stats.
For dice math… you roll them all and add them. Not much else to say
i'm not gonna lie to you, i feel like i'd understand it better if i didn't mod bg3 so i could use halo energy swords and the chief's armor
Hi not gonna lie to you, I’m Nugget
Im a Mountain Dwarf Fighter, Soldier
not the dad jokes 😭
That’s not a backstory, nor-
Wait this is 2014 nvm, that explains the stats. Still no backstory
Mostly we gamble with the good ol’ d20
The rest are mostly used for damage
Skill checks, attack rolls, saving throws, they’re all d20
I dont have a backstory for this dude
is the 100 sided die real or is that just a meme
You know what to do then
It exists, but we usually just use two d10.
The short answer is because the game designers designed it that way. More dice = more variety in outcomes. The long answer involves a lot of game design that we're only privy to a little bit of it. You'd have to ask the designers of D&D directly
D100’s are usually for random events, or specifically wild magic
Yeah there are some manufacturers that make an actual 100-sided die. The game does use a d100, but typically it's in the form of 2 special d10 die (percentile die) that represent the tens and ones place
oh hell nah don't even get me started on magic that confused me more than the math part
Like spellcasting in general or just how each individual spell works?
Spells are a bit more complex than math dice, but really it’s just doing what the spell says it does
Oh, and common sense
All spells also come packaged with tags in their textbox that indicate what's required to cast them as well
5e mod in bg3 give me big boom that's all i know
That's probably where a lot of your confusion is coming from
BG3 is inspired by but not a direct 1:1 translation of 5e. Modding it even further strays it away
I recommend not immediately translating the mechanics
yeah no i'm guessing bg3 is oversimplified which is why i accidentally used up two character creation pages
i have what, 2 more free characters in dnd beyond?
They’re fun (at least imo)
k be honest how likely am i to find a party willing to bring in a total noob that still doesn't understand jack
Relatively
But, learning the rules makes that a lot easier
i mean i get the rules and i also know that sometimes there's homebrew rules
Umm
Have you learnt how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat?
Because that’s the checklist I have for someone who’s able to semi-comfortably play a dnd game
And “classes” meaning a very basic understanding of every class, and knowledge of what your class can do
the checks kind of cause i only got into this cause of bg3 and that one does most automatically
anything magic related i still can't grasp
Don’t need to learn that immediately if you’re not playing a magic character
i legitimately thought bg3 was the way it was in the boards game
DnD isn’t a board game
ttrpg
It’s somewhat similar
Only if you want to, they're not necessary
oh
doesn't the website have dice?
actually i have no one to play with🥲🥲🥲
If you play online for example, there's no need for minis or physical dice
Nugget take us with youuuuuuuuu
ok then online
Technically not even in person, but at least dice is recommended
If you'd like to use this server to find a game, the instructions to do so is found in #find-a-game !
D&D isn't really a drop-in drop-out kind of game
oh
a one shot maybe?
i want to play 1 match
A oneshot would be the closest yes
But even those are typically scheduled in advance
like to know basic rules
Yeahhhhh dnd doesn’t really work like that
oh
You’d have to try and find a one shot in #find-a-game or some other forum
They're linked in both this channel's pins as well as in #learn-to-play . We're happy to answer any questions you might have as you read along
really hit you with the "if he dies, he dies"
To be clear, there are some DMs & tables that are willing to teach directly 1 on 1, but your chances of getting into a table signficantly increase if you've done some of the legwork yourself
Wait, does the backstory add stuff to my stat sheet, or is it just for roleplaying purposes?
Backstory is just narrative, background is the mechanical one
And they’ve done background, so that’s good
Ah gotcha
d&d is big
Mhm
And does it have to be overly fleshed out, or just a single backstory? Like, before he was an adventurer, he was a blacksmith's apprentice. One day he got back from a supply drop and found his teacher dead, and...
How fleshed out it is is up to the player and DM preference. My general checklist for a good backstory is if it can answer 3 questions:
- Who are you?
- How did you get your skills and powers?
- Why are you risking your life adventuring?
You get your powers from your class and features, and the dice either makes you roll to hit or the enemies to resist. Then, dice will be used to determine the damage.
Just like 1-2 sentences each
Lineage,
Childhood
Growth into your class/ background.
Something cool or tragic that happened.
Then whyd you go adventuring or leave your home.
oh
The basics of combat follow a simple loop:
- All participants roll initiative
- Each participant takes a turn where they have their movement, action, bonus action, and 1 free object interaction.
- A new round starts when everyone in initiative has taken their turn
so i was watching Stranger Things and is vecna really a character in d&d?????
I think so
Stranger Things has its own take on Vecna, but Vecna originated from D&D
They’re a powerful being, and almost definitely not playable
Unless your DM is…bold
Originally Vecna was an evil lich made for the Greyhawk campaign setting. Now he's an evil lich god that spans many official settings
so all strager things monster are named after d&d characters
Quite a few of them are
Yup
If we're going to be technical, Stranger Things definitely used D&D's demogorgon as inspiration, but the term demogorgon goes back thousands of years
?tag new dice

D4,6,8,10,12,20
6 types
d4
Mhm
how is that possible
D&D uses the d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4.
Also the d100 but that's usually represented by 2 special d10s for the tens and ones place
Triangular based pyramid
so many dice
If you want the mathematically specific term, the d4 is a regular tetrahedron
i have a d6 though
Get a d20 and you can figure it out.
D20 is a must tho
Is it bad that my backstory basically answers Zero of these questions?
As long as you put in there why you are adventuring you'll be fine
how does one find dm/community if can't write in those channels
Not exactly, but it does mean your backstory may not have elements that are present in how your character roleplays
WIZARDS THIS IS A DISGRACE TO YOUR COMPANYYYY
Just dont expect no epic backstory arc if ya dont give dm room to play with.
Is it also bad that more of my focus is on combat rather than roleplay... uhhhhh
Nah you're fine but just embrace the rp thats honestly the hardest part to make a game memorable
You may very well have answered such questions elsewhere, or have it in mind. The idea behind a backstory is to help explain how your character got to where they are at the beginning of the campaign, and why they'd be inclined to keep going on the campaign
The game was built out of a medieval wargame, so combat is like 50% of the rules. Different players have different preferences. Liking combat is just as valid of a preference as anything else
No one can write in those channels. As per the instructions in #find-a-game , you can either respond to listings in those lfg-channels or you can run the command to make a post in a relevant one
uhhhhhhh layman's terms pls
#find-a-game contains the instructions on how to respond to posts in the lfg channels as well as how to make your own post
Aka, this relevant section:
Yes definitely Combat is 100% needed and you can rp during combat as welll
Im honestly tempted to see if i cant find a quick one shot to get the hang of things, but also it be midnight-
It's quite hard to find a game on short notice, but not impossible.
What does it mean when people say VTT? Usually with roll 20 as context
Virtual tabletop
oh- that makes sense actually
Yeah, saying it out fully gets tedious, so it joined the communities many abbreviations.
I think I've finally made a decent character
Even though she was watered down a bit, I think I'll love my quirky little healer
i made my character in like 10 minutes and im not sure how good it is lol, i think it has some pretty good ability scores for a ranger
how come i can't edit option 6 on the find a game channel
i can only edit 1-5 and 7
Do you mean the form that pops up when you run the command?
You shouldn't be able to edit #find-a-game directly
the submission thing i mean
Feel free to post them here or in #character-discussion if you'd like to get it reviewed!
i can't edit the 6th option on the submission list it gives me
How should i format it, or perhaps the character sheet?
As per the form, Section 6 is all options that are opted-out by default. You have to opt-in to them via the drop down menu at the bottom of the form
ahhhhhh star you're my goat rn
Send the character sheet if you can!
More than once someone has tried copy-pasting the sheet as text into both channels 😅
Star’s right, It’s more common than you’d think, unfortunately…
There appears to be some things missing but i think its fine to send, the png link fine? Pdf sorry
Hmmm, during a game, is it alright if I pause to look at the rule book from time to time?
From time to time, but it’s recommended to know what your character can do
You can't send PDFs directly. You can upload it to PDF to a trusted filesharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that. Otherwise if you made it on D&DBeyond the site can generate a share link directly to the sheet
Absolutely! Pretty much no one has the entire rulebook memorized. Even veteran DMs need to look up rules from time to time
Mhm, I have an idea on what her prepared spells do. Though I'm a bit nervous to combat, since I feel as if they're a bit fast-paced and I don't wanna keep everyone waiting haha
www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/JoahJai_157693786.pdf
Does this work perhaps? (Guess not?)
gasp
Another Nugget!
It does!
It be the nugget clan here
How’d you get these stats?
Manual roll from DNDbeyond
Alright so 3 things:
- Did you roll for stats? I suggest switching to Point Buy or Standard Array. Rolling is nice but typically always done under DM supervision to prevent cheating
- Make sure to equip your equipment!
- Make sure to set your Ranger spells!
Just like to let you know, all rolls not in front of the DM are usually void
Ope, Star bet me to it
MM fun
i would like to use roll, so i assume i would have to roll them again under DM supervision?
Also on the stat priority bit, your Wisdom is a little low for a Ranger. For a Ranger, I suggest the following stat priority:
- Dex > Wis > Con > Cha = Int = Str
I’d also just like add that your wisdom sh-
Damn star you’re on a roll
LOL
Yeah you would, if the DM uses rolled stats
Hmm, I'm glossing over my sheet, and I can't seem to find where my prepared spells are (though I remember setting them!). Where are they located?
Roasted twice for a rolled wisdom, ouch
In the spells tab of the character creator there will be a little side bar where you can set your prepared spells
Don't get me started on how confusing that tab is for newbies that play Wizard, curse DDB formatting sometimes
Mhm, I see that, but I'm referring to the sheet :0 I already prepared some spells, three cantrips and four level ones
Ah yeah. On the sheet they should be listed with a "P" icon on the left of the spells page
Should be near the bottom, with the rest of your spells
As Star mentioned, it’s listed with P for Prepared
How would one set ranger spells, perhaps
In the spells tab of the character creator!
Go to the 9 circles, press “Spells” then “manage spells”
The 9 circles?
Also to clarify, on the DDB website when you view your character page (as opposed to the exported PDF), it should only show your prepared spells
OHHHH so that's why there's no Ps on the PDF, haha. Thanks!
Hmm, how often do I have to change my prepped spells?
I dont quite understand what im looking for, are we talking about something outside of DND beyond's website? (I did find manage spells though-)
If you found manage spells it’s done
Clerics can change them out at the end of a long rest, though they don't have to.
Thanks again! I think I'm ready to join my first campaign ^^
So what are the chances i get a similar roll again i wonder XD (Perhaps i will get smitten by the luck god)
Quite low, lol
I'll give you an example using a character I'm currently playing in a campaign. It's pretty lengthy since he is level 14 but it illustrates the difference between the exported PDF and DDB's website formatting.
Here is the PDF sheet:

Here is the DDB character page:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/86599082/qtX9d3
You'll see on the PDF a massive list of spells which is the entire Paladin spell list (plus a few homebrew/3rd party stuff), then everything with "P" is the stuff I have actively prepared. On the DDB website you'll see that the only spells that appear on my character's spell's tab are the ones that are prepared; the rest are invisible until I prepare them.
It's semi-unlikely. The official rolled method, 4d6 drop lowest has the highest stat "average" compared to the 2 other methods at an average stat of 12.24. A lot of your stats are over 13 so I'd temper your expectations
Gosh, that's a lot of spells... Haha, but I see your point. I feel inclined to the DDB formatting for some reason
It's helpful that all those spells are simply options I can prepare if I think I need them. I don't have to keep most of them in mind 99% of the time. The ones I've selectedto prepare for my character are the ones I think:
- Fit the theming of the character
- Fit what I want to do mechanically with my character
- Fit what I think I'd need most often in the campaign
I believe thats the system DND beyond rolling uses?
Yup! D&DBeyond is D&D's official tool so the character creator has the Basic Rules, including the rolling methods automatically integrated
Hmmm, most of the campaigns I see in the LFG channel are opposite of my timezone
Hi everyone, I'm new here and I want to know more about DND
This question probally gets asked a million times in here i already have tried to do some research on it but is there a video step by step on what i need to do to setup a ready to go game I Have a group of people to play with i just need help on everything else what i know so far is roll 20 and dnd beyond for character creation and also beyond20 i honestly just need like a step by step so i can figure everything out.. thanks in advance
What do you wanna know specifically
Use fewer tools
Start with only pen and paper (at least while you run the game)
Run actual sessions, then when you encounter repeated pain points, start evaluating tools at that point
Hello everyone I’m new to all of this and I wanted to play with my family so I hoped I could get some advice
Are you wanting to be the DM, I’m assuming
Yeah since I was thinking of leading a session when I got my materials and the people to play with since I like to try it

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Here are some tips above
In the essential rulebook, it only has 5 races and classes. Do I have to use those, or can I create ones that are not included?
Creating ones is known as homebrew and typically you have to discuss with your dm about that
If you're new to D&D I'd suggest avoiding too much homebrew at the start so you can get an actual feel for how the game works and the balance of it.
Adding homebrew is fun but if you don't balance it, it can really make a mess of the game
It is very easy to make a character/race a bit overturned just by giving them something like blindsight...
Ooh ok thanks
I heard that wizards are the hardest class in dnd, is this true?
They can be some of the more complex classes to run
They have so many spells
And you have to decide which ones you have prepared for the day.
It can be a lot to manage.
At the same time, they often only really have spells to manage. Other classes may need to juggle multiple resources or resource conversion. It's probably at least partially the reason why the official rulebook lists wizard as "only" average complexity: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
Hi everybody! Beginner DM here. So I'm running the D&D 2022 "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle" module, and I'm just reading it rn, but I'd like to ask if there's anything I should know about it, maybe even modify or fix smt. A reply would be nice. Thank u, many loves.
Not necessarily. On certain criteria bards, druids, monks, sorcerers, and warlocks are all mechanically more complex than wizards.
or rather tactically
You might want to either go to #1029833015423143957 for module specific feedback or #dm-discussion for more general stuff

Where can I find oneshot campaigns?
I got 2...
Look around in #looking-for-players for a one shot, or make a post on #looking-for-dm detailing your preference for a one shot.
In #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community or other online locations that do Looking For Games

Alright, much appreciated, you guys
Thank you!
Anyone knows where to get weird shaped dice that aren't custom or Polyhero?
Search for specialist dice. There's some at thediceshoponline, some at uniquedice dot com.
can someone help me create my character 😭
Definitely the thing that makes wizard really good though.
A wizard and a sorcerer with the same exact spell list that is applicable to the situation at hand, sorcerer meta magic is more useful at that point in time.
But because the wizard gets more spells than everyone else, more easily switched around/ prepared/ ritualled etc. you can basically "batman with prep time" to solve any problem, which is where the magic happens, bdum tsch. Whereas the sorcerer is sometimes stuck with a spoon when all they need is a knife.
Hi everyone.
Where do I put cantrips that come with my race on the character sheet?
The same place as the other cantrips
Near the bottom
Your draconic magic has an affinity with a damage type associated with dragons. Choose one of those types: Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Poison.
You have Resistance to that damage type, and when you cast a spell that deals damage of that type, you can add your Charisma modifier to one damage roll of that spell.
what does one damage roll mean?
When you roll for damage when you hit with a spell
Assuming it hits multiple targets, each target would be a separate damage roll, you can add your cha mod to one of them
That puts it a lot better
ahh
can someone help me create my character? I want to adapt my OC to DnD.
here is the lore of my oc ||https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_WFBrINanVqlnH-vZtp4kChb-dnvtMI7e_vLbie2zfU/edit?tab=t.krr02fgirya1#heading=h.ljc25hcwen1t||
makes sense
We need access
OH SORRY
insert let me in meme
made it so yall can get in
Ok so first of all, they can’t be anywhere near as powerful
i know, i wanna make them a glass cannon
Like, not much hp but slightly more powerful than average
if you get what i say
is it posible to create a class?
Whose body morphs whenever they cast spells (creates a cannon for fireball, missile silo for Magic missile, wings or jet packs for Fly, etc.)
For-
You can definitely create a class, but not many DM’s will allow a homebrew class a newbie just created
I know I wouldn’t
I highly recommend using an already existing class, the flavouring them to fit your character. Though, I don’t know if many DM’s will allow this oc
either warforged or plasmoid maybe
some flavor of wizard, taking fabricate, disentigrate, etc
Wizard or sorcerer looks good
Oh and btw, this is all for PROT, not Void. I wouldn’t even try with Void
To be perfectly honest, this character likely will only be a character for practice and fun, at best a one shot. I don’t see many serious DM’s allowing this in their campaign
At the very least because you should be making a character that fits in the world’s setting instead of a pre-made one with such specific lore
flavor is free, so you could just say that when it casts the spells, his body reshapes to accomodate the effect
Meabhy does have some very good suggestions tho
it can be just for practice and fun, i just wanna have a dnd version of my oc
That’s valid
conjurer wizard maybe, see if you can take the UA version if its allowed
illusionist could also work
making the illusions semi-reality at level 14
wait brb
Creation bard mayhaps?
how do you swap between damage types for a spell that has multiple damage types? like chromatic orb
in dnd beyond*
As long as your DM allows/approves the homebrew
otherwise Tasha's has the Custom Lineage ruleset (but it's fairly restrictive)
how do i know my character's speed?
im watching a tutorial of how to do a character sheet
and it doesnt say it
Your chosen race should include a speed listed among its features in the form of feet, like 30 feet
Meaning how many feet you can move on a turn
Almost all races start with 30 feet
A few shorter races move at 25 feet, and a few other races move at 35 feet
Hello I’m a new player I made a dnd figure and I wanted to know if the character I made was possible to play in dnd
Also it looks like I can’t send images 🥲
If its a figure, you can send a picture in #dnd-minis 😎
though they did away with a lot of the 25ft. movespeeds in 5e.2024
they were sort of in 5e.2014 as a leftover from those species getting benefit from being small in older editions which were phased out with the more recent verssions of the ruleset
I sent the picture and description in minis
As for the character, if you followed the rules and official content, you most likely can!
Oe if you mean you have an idea for character, but are not sure if you are able to make one in dnd, you could ask in #character-discussion
If a wizard has a illusion spell couldn't it cast illusion on the mirror to fool people
Okay thankyou
Sounds like a fun and clever use of the spell!
Can I DM you the character sheet and you tell me how to change it? i cant send files here
sure, send me screenshots and I can go over it with you if you want
sent
anyone know the best way of starting like joining a campain
#learn-to-play, free D&D rules, and then practice character sheet to get a feel for how to do that and how to use a character sheet, then find a group to play with
I can't say what's the best way
If you have a local game shop/book store or library you could check for groups playing in real life.
You can use our Looking For Game channels to try and find a group
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I will say that finding a group can take some time and effort and sometimes multiple groups before you find a group that fits
So be patient, spread your search wide (there are other places to search then just this server), and keep looking.
Yoo I had a question... can we just create our own Weapons and stuff??
That is homebre and yes, that is possible.
you can reflavor an existing weapon if you don't change how it works mechanically and use it prety much anywhere
otherwise it is homebrew and would need to be approved by your dm, but is doable
Ohhh dammmnn
Homebrew is not always recommended for new to D&D folks because it can, without knowing the game mechanics and balance, folks can create wildly unbalanced homebrew that can really make a mess of the game.
I was stressin out for no reason lmao
Point Noted
I'll just create a plain character for now...
so like, if you pick the weapon that mechanically is as close to what you want it to do, and then just change how you describe it, without changing the rules surrounding it
Is the D&D beyond app good for character creation?
that or roll20
can also manually do stuff with pencil and paper
Got it
Thanks
Hi how do i start this dnd thing
Hi all! I'm quite new here and interested in DnD. I have played DnD once and would be very happy to learn more. 🙂 Can you people recommend any campaings for a newcomer? Or is there any DM's that would like to guide new players with patience? 😄
Can I like give more than one class to my beginning lvl 1 character?
No, a level 1 character cannot be 2 classes.
Me too 😭
What you're describing instead is multiclassing, where you can take a level in another class instead of your current one when you level up. There's some specific rules about multiclassing, which I'll link below.
We don't recommend multiclassing for newbies, it can get very complex very quickly and is one of the few ways to accidentally make a "bad" character mechanically
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Multiclassing
As for Ahmed, kooviski and Alastor:
Thanks a lot @wheat crystal ! ❤️
np!
Hey can we like just play campaigns on dnd beyond on our mobiles??
Yeah I got it .
im new to the game I just got out of basic and I played with a guy who has been playing for years and I liked it can I get any tips on anything to start playing
if your group uses discord for voice and a VTT you can use on your phone, sure
Great!
Highly recommend reading the how to play documentation in the free basic rules
i did read all of that im talking ab out like finding a group to play with that will teach me and help me learn more
find a group running one of the introductory modules
generally they go from level 1 to level 5
how do i find that ive looked and cant find anyone
games post LFPs here, on other discords, on r/LFG on Reddit, or you could check out your local game store to see if they have sessions for beginners
can you dm me some discords to join?
Adventure's League is another way to find some more standard, RAW games
things are going to be slow all over due to it being the end of the year, but should pick up once January comes
#looking-for-community is other D&D servers advertising their communities
Hello, I have never played D&D before but I’m gonna be playing it sometime soon and until like 3 days ago I knew basically nothing about it. But I was wondering about character creation. Could selecting a race for your character and picking a good working class matters or you can just pick whichever you want? (Idk how to explain what I mean sorry)

You can pick any species and any class that are in the rule books 🙂
Species and class are pretty much up to you. All combinations of species and class are equally valid, since they have little mechanical impact on each other
Homebrew, that is stuff created outside the regular rules, can be used, but for new players it's generally recommended you stick to the current rule books.
Alright. Good to know
Using the 2024 rules you can take the Magic Initiate origin feat to get access to some abilities of a caster class (Druid, Cleric, Wizard). So you could be a Druid but also have access to some Wizard spells. Or a fighter who can cast some cleric spells.

Quick question: What happens if your dice role comes out negative? Like you role a nat 1 and you have a -2 modifier so your role total is -1.
Then the total is -1.
yes but what do I do for the player? (I'm the DM)
You tell them they failed the check, unless the DC was less than -1
If the DC to succeed is, let's say, 12, then the exact same thing happens when they roll a -1, a natural 1, or a 10.
What exactly are they rolling for here?
Some things do have minimums, though not many
Like, lets say a dwarf rolls for charisma. He gets a nat 1, plus his -2 charisma modifier, so he rolls a total of -1. Do I make him fail as miserably as he would on a nat 1 or something else?
Let's assume the DC for this Charisma check is 12.
If the Dwarf rolls a -1, that's a failure.
If the Dwarf rolls a 1, that's a failure.
If the Dwarf rolls an 11, that's a failure.
All of these rolls have the exact same outcome.
It's not an official rule, that a lower check result compared to the DC counts as an even worse failure in most cases, no.
So, it sounds like you might be using critical failures. Those are a house rule, not part of actual rules as written, and would only apply if they roll a 1 on the actual die
If the total is negative 1, the total is just negative 1
Also, I have to add, I really don't recommend using critical failures in a game
Natural 1's don't have any extra added negative effect, other than:
- guaranteeing a miss on an attack roll
- losing two death saving throws instead of one when rolling a death saving throw
For the vast, vast majority of rolls, a natural 1 is just a normal failure.
And a negative total would also just be a normal failure
yes but the magnitude of the roll depends on how I treat the character. Like, on an 11, the NPC would just shrug him off, but on a nat 1 the NPC might just kick him out of the place or treat him horribly.
Nothing in the rules states that is the case.
oh
Well, if you're doing that kind of scaling based on total, a negative number would be worse than a positive one
I still wouldn't recommend it, and nothing in the rules is going to tell you what to do in that scenario, because that's not an official rule in 5e
So its entirely up to the DM for interpreting how to react to the rolls?
Not exactly. Usually there's a target number to beat and they either succeed or fail
The standard rules don't include that kind of scaling based on total or critical failures. They don't include nat20s on skill checks being special either
It's entirely possible for someone to still fail a check or save with a nat 20 if their total isn't high enough. Or still pass with a 1 if they have a lot of bonuses
Personally, I've had terrible experiences with critical fumbles being applied in game, which is why I don't recommend it. Failing sucks enough without getting extra punished for being unlicky.
Yeah but like, the way I react to a bad roll is entirely up to me right? Like I could make the NPC dislike him or outright hate him. That would be my interpretation right?
Sure. The consequences of failing a roll are up to the DM
But if you punish your players for rolling nat 1s without getting the whole group to buy in first, you may find yourself getting some pushback
As a DM, you're allowed to 'break the rules' as much as you want. How much this is recommended, though, is up for debate, and depends on what you're doing.
I personally do not play at tables that use Critical Fumbles
That is an absolute deal breaker for me and I will walk away from tables
If you don't tell me in advance, I will walk away mid game
Certainly not something we'd recommend to new DMs.
This. This is the correct answer.
What is a critical role?
(On attack rolls specifically)
You mean like a 1 concentration save but +9 should be a pass. But dm makes you fail?
Wait but isn't it mentioned somewhere in the books that nat 20s should be interpreted as crits? I think I read that somewhere in the books
That. Or I roll a 1 on an attack and somehow stab my fighter in the back through plate mail.
That's correct. It's not how the rules work, but some DMs insist on doing it that way.
Natural 20s are critical hits on attack rolls and have special effects on death saves. Nothing else.
Yes throwing produce flame and rolling a 1. Making me hit my front line monk right next time the enemy? Yeah I've been there
The same as natural 1s. Those are the only thing it affects in the rules.
Not that I've ever read, outside of attacks and death saves.
ohhh. so its only for attack rolls and death saves?
It annoys me slightly less when the fumble 1 only punishes me and not my party, but I'm still not okay with it overall.
And yes, that's what we've been saying
Correct. Those are the only two kinds of rolls that have extra effects when your dice lands on the 20.
Unless a ability sais "save by 5 or less this happens" but that has nothing to do with the 1 itself just your ability to pass tbe save after. A crit fail is only on attack rolls. It shouldn't attack you or your allys either.
They're also the only two kinds of rolls that have extra negative effects when your dice lands on 1.
oh ok
Ah true a crit fail death save is 2
That is correct.
I don't count those since they don't require you to roll a 1.
I suppose there are a few weapons where a 20 matters, but those are specific text in the items and not any kind of general rule.
Certainly not necessary to mention in the newcomers chat
so its like a rule right? That nat 20s are crits and nat 1s are fumbles? So if my player rolls that I need to abide by what it says in the instructions.
(only on attacks and death saves obvs)
For attacks and death saves specifically, yeah.
You don't have to follow every rule in the book, but most players will be expecting their DM to be running the game as intended.
Not to mention, the game is designed around those rules to prioritize balance and fun.
why isint there like a dnd online like there is a magic the gathering online
ok, thakyouuu
Question I was looking at the dnd games that are being hosted and I noticed that all them that I looked at cost money why is that
I am a new DM, we just had our session 0 I plan to run Lost Mine of Phandelver.
We agreed to role our stats but at least 2 of the players are so good now (stat wise, I’ll write them below)
What do I do? I feel like they aren’t gonna be challenged at all basically, see all the traps instantly with their passive perception etc.
So what am I supposed to do?😅
PC1: str 10, dex14, con17, int16, wis18, cha15
PC2: str11, dex14, con17, int18, wis18, cha14
I'm not really sure what you're asking. DnD it's game played in the imagination. Are you asking if there's a way to play DnD online? There certainly is.
You might be in the #paid-looking-for-game channel. The #looking-for-players channel only lists free games.
Even you're talking about in general, there are more people who want to play D&D games than DMs, so some people charge for it
Oh ok@timid locust
Did you watch these players roll their stats? Or did they just come to you with those numbers?
Thanks
No I watched them, we met irl and did that together. They were just really lucky
Did these players drop the fourth dice? It's roll 4d6 and then ignore the lowest roll.
Question where would I find that chat with the free games
They did 😅 there were just a lot of 6s
#looking-for-players is where you want to look
I hope you don't feel like I don't believe you here, it's just that two 18s, a 17, and nothing under 10 is like a 1/2,000,000 chance.
whats some starter help to make a game online
Thanks found it
?tag new online
Take a look above. I'd also make sure to read the Basic Rules first.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Nono I don’t think that at all. They rolled 4d6, dropped the lowest and entered it in the character creator. Those stats also have the race bonuses etf added (automatically by DnD beyond)
Oh, secondary question. Are you using 2014 or 2024 rules?
And if the latter, did they also add stat bonuses from their backgrounds (it should not be both)
I suppose that makes it slightly more believable.
Well! You have two choices. Either:
- Accept that the randomness of rolling comes with the chance that some players will have a much stronger start than others. That is the intention behind random rolling, after all, even if it sometimes means some players are going to be sad.
- Ask everyone to re-generate stats using a balanced method like the Standard Array or Point Buy so that everyone starts at the same power level.
2024, they didn’t add anything themselves they only entered what they rolled into the character creator and DnD beyond added everything else. Is there a way to check?
The reason I ask is because 2024 rules don't get racial stat bonuses, but I think sometimes things get weird if you use older species. The DDB character creator isn't always 100% accurate
Rather, the DDB character creator won't stop you from double adding ASIs .
If you have the RAW numbers they rolled prior to adding ability scores from their origin, we could tell you what happened, if anything.
PC1: str10, dex14, con16, int16, wis16, ch15 (human, warlock sage background)
PC2: str11, dex14, con16, int17, wis17, cha14 (human, cleric background)
If those were their base rolls on 4d6 drop lowest, then it seems like they were just really lucky
Are you specifically worried about them being better than everyone else, or just them being too good?
Mostly them being too good for the campaign and me not knowing how to balance it. The other PC has pretty normal stats (except for a 5 in int) but they said they are fine with them being “worse” stat wise
Question: What's the "Deck of Many Things"?
Chaos in a box
It's a magic item. A fairly well known one in D&D lore. But it has random, wildly variable affects, so I wouldn't recommend throwing it in your campaign
Unless you're okay with potentially killing or significantly changing the campaign
Hello everyone I’m still kinda new to dnd but my friend group isn’t consistent for me to get a real grasp in which i am yearning to understand i am a father of 2 and looking for either weekly or bi weekly play where do i go from here i do have the dnd beyond app and roll 20
Around here, you can use the #looking-for-players channels to see if there are any DMs in need of people for games. That's where those things should be posted, though you can also look at #looking-for-community to see if there are other communities with one-shots you might like
You could also try checking local game stores or Warhorn for in person stuff, if that might work for you

Character sheet*
Well, normally I would say that you should post the character sheet in this server, but it is against server rules to post anything made with AI. Honestly, I would highly recommend you start over and do it for yourself. The Basic Rules are a step by step guide to filling out a character sheet, and you'll never learn the process if you have an AI do it for you. D&D is a game of rules and numbers, so taking short-cuts without understanding the progress is going to greatly hinder how much you can actually engage with the game
it will 100% have made a character sheet that doesnt actually follow the rules. dont use a chatbot for this
Right, that's the other thing. I was more concerned about the learning process, but as far as the actual result goes, the AI will almost certainly make a ton of mistakes
Also imo dice should always be rolled publicly. Dont trust the guy who sais he rolled 6 18s
or the one that totally rolled a 19~20
Can somebody help me make a character then I can tell you what it did have and you can help me make a real character inspired by the ai one ?
Alright, but know you can’t post the AI one on this server
Can I dm u ?
