yes
your first character is level 15?
you forgot basically all choices during creation
havent equipped any items
have a low wisdom and charisma, what you use for spells
Yea you make ya sheet based on the campaigns starting lvl set by the dm
correction, you have only chosen spells and some items
so yeah, @indigo zinc thats the only things i see
the what?
lfg stands for looking for group - I meant the #find-a-game channels
okay how about that
I'm still getting used to the website, it has a lot of stuff to fill out which is a lil overwhelming
but i am a player why would i be looking for players?
during character creation, there are these blue borders around stuff, you should click all of those and select the options they give you
it’s a chat where dm’s post they are looking for players, you are one of said players
There's another chat where players post they are looking for DMs.
okay I think I'm done, maybe https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/155374298/SaSvQB
It takes a while to find a game.
if you get into a game you will probably need to remove the ring but the rest seems good
what did you try? reacting to a post?
idk i just clicked on the /looking for player button then the chat bot did a thing
Dont forget to click the box next to your gear to equip it on your sheet
thats not what you needed to do
youre supposed to react on posts there
in the thread
It's not really something you can just jump into, it can take days to find a group depending on scheduling and a number of things. Think of it like a job board.
but all i see are the rules and stuff
a-a-a-a J*B!?!?!?!?!
i'm a dnd player, i dont have a job
Neither do I, and it sucks.
hands over job application form
i am employed but i dont care
i get paid basically nothin anyway
And that right there is the attitude we're looking for! You're hired.
Anyways, back to helping.
yup
The page allows you to get the roles to be able to look in #looking-for-players #looking-for-dm
And goes over the rules for em
roles?
do you need roles? i just have all channels on
I thought it gave roles lol my bad
you probably do need roles
Most likely
The find a game channel is mostly for giving people the rules and directing to the other channels where you can find stuff. That way rules don't get repeated everywhere all the time.
sooo uhhh how the heck do i use these channels? cause it seems i gotta make a thread or something
If you click on the looking for players it should take you to a channel where there are lots of posts from DMs looking for players. It's not like a live chat, you need to reply to the ones that interest you.
You can make a post in the looking for DMs channel, and that is for DMs to go in and check for available players. They will reply to your post if they have something you will fit. Once again, not like a live chat.
Does that help?
I generally don't use those channels, since I'm planning to run Tales of the Valiant. It's mostly the same as 5e but that right there would just confuse players looking to use DnDBeyond and others just learning D&D. So I don't post there.
question, is it possible to play a campaign without voice chat? my mics broken and i can't get a new one right now
I think it's possible to do so
It's possible but it'll be alot of typing 😅
Hello can someone help me i am really lost i want to get into d&d I haven't played it yet but I am very interested and idk what to start with in this server i am very overwhelmed
There are play by post campaigns that rely on text.
Well, tell us what you know about D&D so far.
I know some basic rules and what its about.I have the starter pack but I haven't had time to read the all the rules and I will
What else
But character sheets confuse me
ive been using this Ginny Di vid to help build for practice
Fs this is just her building a character with the 2024 sheet hope it helps!!
Thanksss
Is there a way to fill out the Character cards online
If the DM has a PDF or something of the character card, you can just take it into Photoshop and put your details over it
Ahhhh
👋
Any good guides to get started? Recently had the idea to make d&d a hobby. I already talk to myself so I feel like making a game out of it wouldn’t be a bad idea

Played dnd for the first time today. 🥳 campaign was 5 hours long. I made a drow ranger. Really enjoyable experience. I plan to look into it further and hopefully convince my friends to try as well!
parents are letting me chose my Christmas gifts this year, and I desperately need some stuff for dnd, but I don't know what, any input on what to get?
What stuff do you need? Get that
If you have the rules, and dice, you don't need much else
Yee get you some dice
hey im trying to use a homebrew subspecies and subclass but i don't know what i should use im using the 5e 2024 so im lost
hi im new here
i alwais wanted to play d&d how do i start and how to faind anyone to play?
hello! I’m new to DnD!

Heya! Anything specific you wanna learn about?
Nothing specific! :)
Yes get a good set of dice. There's a lot of options online
Ah so yeah I'd start with what the Dyno bot suggested. It's a good way to learn the basics of DND
Thank you so much!!
No problem if there's anything you don't fully understand there don't be afraid to reach out here
Could you specify what you mean? If you’re making your sheet on D&DBeyond the homebrew options should show up in the species tab and when you get your subclass at level 3 as long as you’ve added the relevant items to your homebrew collection (if you made it yourself it should automatically be added)
what i mean is we arent using roll 20 and im looking for an easy to use charact creator for 5e 2024 rules so yea
hello i am trying to get in to dnd but i havnt been able to find a pod to play with were could i find one to play with online
The easiest way to put in homebrew is by filling in the official sheet yourself. D&DBeyond is the next easiest way
If you’d like to use this server to find a game check #find-a-game
alright thank you
thank you
Can anyone explain spellcasters to me, I've only ever played martial classes
What part are you finding confusing?
is it spellslots, known spells, or something else?
The spells themselves mostly, because from what I've seen there are millions of them that most people somehow know, meanwhile I barely got what cantrips are but still don't know all of them and idk how it works in general since I haven't played
you dont need to remember them
Also I searched spells online and got some weird statistics such as school and components
we got a lot of explaining to do
School is just the type of magic
Honestly id try dnd beyond it helps keep track of spells you know and when you use em
There are different magic types and schools
Components can be Verbal, Somatic, and Material
Verbal means you need to be able to speak
Somatic means you need to have one hand free
This provides a good overview of spells: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells
Material means you need a certain, well, material
Honestly thank you I didnt know what the S meant
Thank you
I am new and I have a question is cannot find i dm that works with my setup I've never played D&D before can I be a dm?
Yup!
I started dnd as a DM actually
And so did the guy that’s about to reply
same for me, 5 years of DMing before playing
f you nuggie
I do want to be a player but I cant find the right dm
I couldn’t find a DM, full stop. So I took matters into my own hands.
"Fine. I'll just do it myself."
Thanks sorry if I ask a lot of questions its a lot
Being new ain’t a bad thing, and there’s no such thing as a stupid question
yuppers
I am very confused about all the different mod like 2024 d&d and 2014 d&d and other what the hell is that
thats just different rulesets
I’d say stick with the 2024 rules
i recommend using 2024 for now
They’re different rules/editions of dnd
a lot
but using 2024 really is your best option here
I wouldn’t say that much. The core gameplay is nigh identical
But it’s definitely different
its the easiest to pick up
I have the new starter set is that 2024..or
yes, it is
OK am glad bc i think it will help me a lot when being a dm
Starting with a module is recommended for new DMs
Wish I knew that
What's a module?
Pre made campaign
god wish i knew that, i made an entire campaign and even statblocks for what were LITERALLY SLAADI BEFORE KNOWING WHAT A SLAAD WAS
Yea as much as I want to ik that it will be much easier if its my first time
So I will use a pre made one
Like making your own world is much more fun imo, but you need the core gameplay down first
Is there anything else that's very very important for my first game
the rules, and a session 0
Do you know the rules? You wanna know them more than your players.
you dont have to
A cup/bottle/glass/can of your favourite beverage
“Wanna” is the key word
Huh
It’s easier for sure, but it’s not necessary
yes yes yes yes this
What's a session 0?
A session that outlines the themes of the campaign and the boundaries that are present for what is allowed at the table
establishing player boundaries and what everybody wants from the campaign
Ok
Wait I need to write this down wait
At what age did you guys start playing dnd?
8
i don't remember how old i was and im too lazy to do the math in my head, but just before shutdown when the alcoholic beverage virus came around
and because of this ^
No probs
It would be fine if you haven’t specified how long you’ve been playing for but I have on many occasions
Sorry if that was to personal
i have too but a while ago
so i dont really care if you want to explicitly research how old i am
you wont get anyting from it
I am staring at my character sheet rn
lmao
Idk what to pur
what do you not understand

?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
oh yeah, tag
THAT HELPS SO MUCH THANKS
OR maybe I should just read the rules I have💔
you should
No problem

i wonder what sticks out about my name that gets people to randomly friend request me through this server.
Nothing - it's just what tends to happen on large servers like this. Scammers trying to find targets. Ignore, report to Discord, and block.
You can go to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator where we can open up a private thread if you wish to add them to our watch list...
oh i dont accept them. if it were bots it'd make more sense. but i mean out of like more than 70000 users in here alone to manually narrow in on some name that's not even remotely close to the top or bottom just seems like a lot of work.
With how cheap it is to make a Discord account the costs are pretty small and all it takes is some Discord noobie to accept...
Anyway we should let this channel get back to helping newcomers get started
a handful of them are newcomers, super excited about the game and really not understanding exactly how it works. like not bots or scammers. i just found it weird that its happened a few times. on the upside i can point them in the right direction and clarify a few things. i just find it a weird coincidence. and i'm paranoid.
but i shall keep it in mind where to report things if sketchy stuff heads my way. thanks.
Generally, should you build a character prior to searching for a campaign to join or should you seek out a game and then build a character around that world/campaign? Thanks in advance!
building a character prior to joining gets you used to building characters in general. and it helps you to explore the characters you might want to play in a campaign.
once you have a game to play in, you could either rework one of your existing characters to fit, or build from scratch.
by rebuilding from scratch in the new campaign you might have additional options you didn't have before.
When it comes to spells, can someone help me understand something: ex: at Level 5, a ranger has 4 spells known. That means he has to select 4 spells the ranger can use? It doesn't mean they have access to all 1st and 2nd level spells so long as he prepared them?
when can the character be cross class
Multiclass (having more than one class)? If your DM allows it and you meet the prerequisites to multiclass. The earliest you can multiclass is level 2.
Gneerally it's not recommended to multiclass if you're new to the game as it can make your character more complex to understand and manage its features.
Maybe another way to ask is a ranger a known or prepared spellcaster?
They can use whatever spells they have prepared, which is not all of them if that’s what you mean
So does the ranger have access to any of the 1st level ranger spells or just a few?
I did a short search but came up empty, do you (as in anyone) know of a table that maps out "equivalent" spells / spells that fullfill similar purposes from the lists of different classes?
Not too broad categories (like school or damage type), but more "useful" like crowd control, social interaction, perception, passive mobility, active mobility, ally enhancement, etc 🛐
It might not be quite what you're after, but the spell list on D&D Beyond (https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells) allows you to view spells by tags (which are sort of the categories you mention) under the Filter Spells button.
Yup, some tags for example are "control", "debuf", and "social". Hoping that helps!
i can see the tags but can't filter by them 💔
A few
Click Filter Spells. Then click Show advanced filters. Then click the white space under the Spell tags label and you should see a dropdown menu.
💀 skill issue, my bad, guess the button wasn't eyecatchy enough, ty friendo and ty dnd beyond for having that available 🛐
Then hit Filter Spells again.
rangers a prepared spell caster, know em all but only prepare very few each day
NUGGET I BUILT A PALADIN
Devotion 😎
Classic
What’s their backstory?
Why did they choose an oath of devotion out of all the options?
Grew up a solider, wanted to go exploring and get stronger, so he found the god Tyr, and decided to be faithful to him. He finds Tyrs cause just.
A religious bloke eh?
Not as much a “pray to Tyr every day” but more of a “I’m killing you because Tyr wants me to”
Btw did you know paladins don’t have to be religious?
So he just goes around fighting evil, pretty neat
Though, a knight fighting for a god isn’t inherently a paladin or a cleric. Was there anything in particular that fuelled him to bind himself to an oath, a pretty serious process?
Seems like a great convo to continue over in #character-discussion
Ah yes

Hello.
Hi
Welcome to dnd, where you can store up to 512 whole chickens in a bag!
Check out #learn-to-play and report back with any questions
That’s actually really cool😭
Got it!
For what it’s worth, put two of those bags together and you get sent to the astral plane
Hello, fellow role players.
I'm not quite new to D&D, but I'm certainly new to this Discord.
Pocket dimension inside a pocket dimension goes crazy
Check out #channel-guide and have fun
Mhm
Already did. First I wanted to get to a place where I could learn and talk about other characters's biographies and maybe share my own's. I'm guessing #character-discussion is the place for that?
Yup!
Excellent. Thank you for the Guidance (pun intended) 👋🏻 .
I hope I gave you some…Inspiration
hello
Hi
you play monk
I do indeed
thats super cool i havent made a monk yet but i hear there super versatile
Well, they can punch/kick/headbutt/knee/elbow/shoulder bash/suplex/grapple people and also go rlly fast
They aren’t exceptional out of combat or with skills
So I wouldn’t call them super versatile, but they’re not one tricks
i mean i guess thats why you gotta play with a party i just hit stuff
Monks can do that very well!
ive made a bunch of characters but i cant find people to play with so they collect dust i was thinking about just letting others use them
Well, I can’t say I don’t have a mountain of characters in my notes app, but also making a character yourself is a central part of dnd
i guess thats true i just see on the app that people post a bunch of different ones so that people can just go and play
Pre made characters do exist
so what are some things a beginner should know on knowing what things mean when playing?
I'm struggling to join a campaign in #looking-for-players
Read the rules or handbooks
....helpful, thanks..
I have 2014 and 2024 handbook pdf, should I share it?
Okay so first things first, read the basic rules:
By this i mean, what are the things on a character sheet, how are your stats determined, what is an AC,....
- the "regularly used stuff":
What is a saving throw, what are your options during combat (what options do you have: action, bonus action, reaction)
And woth that you are already well equipped to start imo
Dnd simply os a alot about reading I'm afraid 🤷
okie dokie thank you
Check out #learn-to-play
Then report back with any questions you might have, we’re happy to help.
I always say “If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.”
Sounds like imma need a day or 10 to learn
Exactly, realistically thats all u need to get into the game
I personally started by watching the short animated yt videos about classes
I might also add short and long rests, but yeah those are rlly everything
From the funny blue worm noodle dragon
Tbh those are explained within like 5 minutes during actual gameplay
Eventually, things will just, click
And you'll start understanding things faster, smoother, their implications
My biggest issue runs into some of the more complicated rules and character building
Such as ?
In terms of character building it’s more so what I can and can’t use, as well as like the explanations
I’ll end up spending an upsurd amount of time here soon watching videos and reading into it, as DND has been something I’ve been wanting to get into for a while
what you can/can't use is based on the DM's rules for character creation. For example, they might not want robot autognome from space, in a whimsical fey campaign. Or they might be open to that. That's up to the DM.
So I’ve heard
that's literally it, yeah.
Yeah I’m still also trying to get a feel for what to focus on and what blends
What are u looking at atm?
I’d rather be more like well informed on the different classes(what they do and what fits/doesn’t fit) as well as potential subclasses going down the line
Imo just read, thats about all u have to do 🤷
Blending classes is for wayyyyy down the line after u have some experience with character building
It’s on my list of side hobbies to invest more time into
Blending classes is just something I’m like super ocd about, I hate building a character that doesn’t make sense for the type of build I’m going for
And once I get thinking I like to integrate my backstory almost before I build anything on a character
Thats why u think sbsout it before actuslly commiting
And if you need any basic information on each class do
?tag new (insert class here)
For example
Just think of a storo
y that makeks sense in the context of the campaign
?tag new fighter
Fighter
Master all weapons and armor
Fighters rule many battlefields. Questing knights, royal champions, elite soldiers, and hardened mercenaries—as Fighters, they all share an unparalleled prowess with weapons and armor. And they are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and defying it.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 14
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 10
Cha. 12
Likes: Weapons
Complexity: Low
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
That’s like not descriptive but like incredibly descriptive all at once
I think sleep deprivation is starting to decipher words I didn’t know were possible
Tbh the less magic the class has, the "easier" the character is to build imo
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Yeah but then there’s less variety, and I’m not crazy about the basic choices for a lot of my builds
I disagree with this table a bit, monk should be average and barbarian should be low
That being said every class is perfectly learnable
I get that yeah
What classes are u lookikg at atm?
I also hate myself and all the builds I like need high complexity
Give examples
Im bored and have a bit of time anyway
Maybe i can help u figure sth out and troubleshoot
“High complexity” really should just be “needs approximately 5 brain cells instead of 2”
I can’t managed more than 1
Uhhhh
Ehhh more like "person with 5 brsin cells needs to have reas the important stuff about said class"
Rn I’m building a wizard but planning to have them be more like magic swordsman type
E.g. lots of versatility, stand alone, tanky
Speed based though
There’s a subclass for that: bladesinger
Bladesong then, also take the shield spell 100%
That’s the one I’m looking at
Sth else you could like is eldritch knight maybe
Speed based, basically an assassin
Also, eldritch knight is a fighter that can do magic (not as well, but can fight physically better)
Not really a "wizard" but still some magic
I haven’t even begun looking into spells cause they hurt my brain
Haha we are sharing a brain cell i think
Okay, do u have a campaign?
Or just building for fun
Learn classes and stats and basic stuff first before trying to figure out spells
Potentially? My friends and I want to but couldn’t tell you when or if it’ll even happen
Alright, maybe decide on a starting lvl
Waiting to see if everyone has time or if the DM even decides to actually do it
If u are very new (all of u) go for sth like lvl 1-3
Maybe even 1 so its easier to digest
I would’ve joined one here but I’d like to gather more info before throwing myself in and looking like a fool
And work your way up frol there
Understandable
Pretty sure I’m the only one semi still interested which sucks
Feel that lol
But it is what it is
I’ll probably start to build characters for fun though
Only thing I’m confident is 95% of my characters will be chaotic neutral
Gotcha,
Tbh settle for a class after u have all the basics down (like wizard) and filter for 1st lvl spells and cantrips separately
Get a feel for them, after a while youll see that some are very similar
Also if u actually decide to play and want some broken character ideas hit me up lol
I’m always down for character discussion
Being a DM sounded fun too but I don’t have the story changing adaptability that I’d like to even attempt that
So I've only watched DND (a lot more recently while I work on stuff) and I've been really wanting to get into it but have 0 clue what I'm doing let alone friends with the same interest in DND so just curious on what to do and what I should know etc, any help would be appreciated 🙏
And I think I tried it once a long time ago but never really got far due to the DM not really caring
Reaaaaad xD

Hallo
Seems like the media wizard thing for (seeing what to do for your turn) does not work or won't load
you mean the sheet?
on ddb?
The frequently asked questions part and has a link to a site and it doesn't seem to work / load for me
Idk if it's just a me thing or just in general
oh, frequently asked questions is not required
its stuff like do i need to pay money to play (no)
Ohhh ok
So now I guess I'm not sure what to do lol outside of where I even ask for a group or a group needing more members that are ok with a noob lol
first try understanding the rules
then #find-a-game
THIS IS IMPORTANT
Like DND rules or server just to be clear
Both, but more so dnd
Alrighty thank you
Yeah seems like a lot of rules might have to have them up or something if or when I play
you only need to understand the basics
so combat, ability checks, saving throws, what your character can do, and thats it
or rather, checks, saves, character
lmao
But I've always been wanting to do DND but NONE of my friends are into that kinda stuff and it sucks
ONLINE DND
Been bingeing a lot of critical role
never watched it, tftsd all the way
Yeah its been between that or legends of avantris
As much as it is practically a poster-child at this point, keep in mind to temper your expectations since that is a bunch of celebrity voice actors with a big budget.
Yeah I know appreciate it tho lol I just like the idea of a fantasy world being alive in my brain
Avantris to me does seem like a more accurate representation as it is completely unhinged and rife with friend-group-jokes and immense laughter. I've had a moment like that, being paralyzed laughing for like 20 minutes after a player of mine had one of the funniest ad-lib remarks with such a sincere tone
That's mostly what I'd be looking for I like a good laugh and just all around fun with the occasional seriousness
that happened once with me too, best dnd ive ever had
these shows sound really interesting do you guys have more dnd shows/animations to recommend?
Tales from the stinky dragon
It was when the warlock was contacting their patron for answers, one of the questions got the reply of "With difficulty and wit"
And he just said something along the line of "oh good, I have both of those"
And I was completely incapacitated for like 20 minutes laughing so hard my lungs hurt
Also seen a lot of horror stories about bad players and dms tho
Whenever I watch avantris I'm always laughing like crazy
Half the time in crying due to it
mind you that is the absolute worst of the dnd sphere
And also frequently made up.
yup
Yeah my first DND "session" I ever did the DM gave up and got bored after like a day and crushed what I wanted to do (was a few years ago)
ouch
Yeah and it was my first time and I was doing the RP as well and I already felt awkward
So kinda crushed my spirits about it especially getting out of my comfort zone and actually doing the RP
once you do get the good RP in, its super fun
And it took forever to actually start playing let alone me creating a character
Think I was a dragon kin or something and did poison stuff
a dragonborn?
Yes
Was thinking I was wrong cause I thought of Skyrim
And had all the cool sound effects and everything
Never been so immersed in my life
And I've been searching for the same immersion for a while so I got into DND YouTubers and podcasts
Imagery is so vivid and everything
I just wanna see if I can find that again
And let alone getting to make my own character that was also incredibly fun
The RP is like the best part for me
i suppose you really have to find a like-minded party that loves to rp as well
I mean even with the bard music and being in a tavern and everything playing everything out like I could see it so clearly in my brain
basically every party likes RP
because not everyone exactly rps when they play dnd
the amount and how differs, but basically everyone RPs to some extent
Now it's been an itch I can't scratch lol
i suppose yea thats true
Cause being a short green goblin that licks gold was also pretty funny to hear someone RP
That was probably the hardest belly laugh I ever had
But meeting random people and doing RP sounds terrifying to me
Let alone being new probably drive some people away
i think as long as u got ur character sheet ready and know the basics of the rules it will be fine after finding a party even in this server. it'll seem awkward or take a lil while getting used to rping with random ppl but im sure it'll be all fun and games in no time
I remember using a character thing on some site to make my character can't remember what it was called but made it pretty simple to do
ddb?
sorry, dndbeyond
I think so
Maybe I'll find a DND book so I can flip through it and read the rules
Plus having a physical copy is appealing
having a physical book is fing nice
Got any recommendations for a rule book cause I see quite a few
Great googly moogly 50 dollars
my dad has the original DND books like the monster manual and the DMs guide
as in the first edition?
That sounds actually cool
or just the normal 2024/2014 books
Yeah, for the current edition of the game, there are now two player's handbooks. The old one has a red cover and depicts a giant, the new one shows an adventuring party and has a gold dragon on it.
(just adding context)
I see the dragon one
Also see some monster ones as well
Probably just dm stuff
yuppers, lot of player resources
dnd is over 50 years old yeah
Even older than my mom 😭
Feels like a lot of knowledge to absorb
Also been wondering if theirs like DND horror
Cause that sounds REALLY interesting
define horror
Like uhhh cosmic horror or just like a dealing with cathulu stuff or something along the lines of that
I mean u can make stuff like that for sure
probably already out there to some extent
Then yeah I’ve heard of campaigns like that
eldritch gods and beings deffo exist
Cause it does sound really fun
look up the "slaad"
0 clue what that is lol
or "juvenile eldritch horror"
Dragon worm lizard thing
Looks really cool ngl might have to see if I can find a file to 3d print it
I like the slaad alot
basically they "come from chaos" and live in/around it and are therefore immune to most natural phenomena
and they infect other creatures like a "facehugger" from the alien movies --> so the host just kinda dies once they "hatch"
well actually, the alien is the wrong analogy here, since the host BECOMES the body
The giant frog looking guys?
I like the blue one
theres a lot of different ones
Gives me vibes of the rat guys from Warhammer (don't know much about Warhammer either)
green, blue, red, grey
Give me dart frog vibes
So much I wanna learn lol
i feel that
I love Eldritch esq horror stuff
I wonder if I can find a book about all the playable races and what not
Let alone classes
well multiple books, yes, one "book" especially in physical form, uhhh not really
I do have a printer that could help a little bit
Lotta ink tho
Recommend any books?
I just use online sources, so not really
Which sites would you say to take a look at for classes?
cant share links that well here bc sometimes they just get deleted, I can dm u stuff tho if u want
or rather: I cannot be bothered to use google drive to share stuff so I could just dm u some links if u are interested
Sure id appreciate it
ight
definitely. Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft is basically a whole book of horror tone and concepts and such. It has a segment for DMs just talking about multiple kinds of horror, body horror, cosmic horror, etc.
Actually peak appreciate it
It's also on sale
Any others like this?
I love spooky cool creatures
plenty just scattered across
e.g. the bodytaker plant, basically makes clones of people it eats to spread spores
:DDD
or the gibbering mouther also looks a bit funny
I am very excited
Sounds like it could be a whole story on its own lol
yup
Got any personal favorites
the end of our campaign will be eldritch horror
Very well
NUGGIE
Helloooo
Oh hi!
wtf why did everyone just spawn in the second I did
Hi
we are minecrat mobs
My name isn’t Steve. Or Alex.
you just held out a rulebook
no, its Nuggie
Ik I said I was gonna a read all the rules but I got distracted by making my character (the looks) ...heh.
real
It definitely happens, especially cuz it’s a lot to absorb
Wait is this serious
yuppers
Anything I can help you in the rules department?
he
I feel like there might be a pun in here
If there is i don’t see it and it’s unintentional
I saw it as a pun at the movie the THING
LOL
I see a lot of people saying don't dm me does that frequently happen in this server
I’ll leave this in UndyingNoob’s capable hands
That probably depends on the person tbh
W pfp
Yes. On a server this large there are a lot of scammers. If you get unsolicited friend requests or private messages (exception - Dyno the Discord bot which is what we moderation use to send formal reminders and warnings), best to report it to Discord and block that user. You can also come to #moderator-support and ask to speak with a moderator where we can create a private thread where you can report the account. We can at least put them on our watch list.
How do they scam people?
Ohhh ok thank you 🙏
Fishing links etc
OK
Um so I have this thing next to the tag on my name but I wanted the one for newcomers but idk how to change it .
Usually "hey would you like to play a game? <link to supposed game but is actually a way to deliver malicious payload>"
Or "Hey do you need some art? <posts arts that isn't theirs or is AI-generated or both>"
You can't change the new icon - that's just a Discord thing
On the left when you see all the channels go all the way to the top and see channels and roles it will be in there
Thanks
No problem
I am interested in people story's can i ask how you got into or and found out about dnd?
Personally I've known about DND for a long time I tried it once, it was a pretty cool experience but DM gave up and kinda ruined it for everyone but that's whatever. And I personally love DND because listening to podcasts or the one time I played it was so cool being able to see it all in my head playing out like a movie, gave me such a feeling I've been chasing ever since
And only recently have been watching alot more DND stuff and want to get into it or try to at least
That's very cool was it irl or not?
Was in discord and we had sound effects and everything as well
First time trying rp along with my first DND session
Wow I would love to play dnd it looks so cool its a bit complicated but that's what makes it interesting
Yeah I'm on the same boat basically rn I gotta learn everything
Well atleast you've played
Friend gave me a D&D Beginner's Red Box for my birthday back in the 80s. Looked pretty cool. But I had no one to play with as no one was interested in playing it.
Fast forward to high school and I'm playing Shadowrun with my friends (another TTRPG system). Had a blast.
But then college and life hit and couldn't really find time to play TTRPG games.
Finally around 2016 I found some time and started playing Fantasy Flight's Rogue Trader with friends. Then another friend invited me to play D&D with their group and that got me back into D&D.
A couple years ago lol
That's really cool
What's a red box?
Is it like the beginner set
That's really cool wish I had DND stuff from the 80's lol
It was a beginner D&D starter set from back in the 80s
I just want a good experience with DND again let alone with cool people
Yes same
Like It was like a drug after playing DND like that
Something that itches the right part of my brain
Let alone laughing and not being able to breath
Omg I want that
Oops
Its a addicting
Been trying to find something that hit the same spot of enjoyment (looked everywhere besides DND for a while)
Everything low-key got a little more boring after
Everyone's D&D story is going to be different. I wouldn't try and compare your D&D stories "value" better or worse than any others.
We play games like D&D to have fun - and as long as folks are accomplishing that in their games, you're doing D&D "right". You might have tearjerker moments and riotous hilarity all within the same game or campaign and it all adds into an amazing fun game experience that D&D can provide.
I just hope finding a group isn't too bad
I wanna experience a tear jerker besides one from laughing till I almost pass out
Don't think like that yiu will find a group that you really like
I hope so 🙏
I want to focus on being a dm so I can make a group that's safe for younger dnd players I think that's important
I still remember being deathly afraid of doing RP (still am and haven't done it since)
“Hope will always triumph over experience.”
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
What's RP ?
Roleplay
To be cringe is to be free
Real
But really finding a group is also about them being respectful and not judging your rolepaly
Roleplay*
I was told I was doing pretty good I just jumbled my words half the time
I hardly believe that
Apparently I do a good goblin voice idk if that's a compliment 😭
Am talking about Nugget just so yk
Oh it defeats is
Definitely
Sorry if I scramble over my words English is not my first language
It's ok don't worry about it
I can do plots, descriptions, world-building, character creation, backstories, rules, a lot of stuff.
But not voices.
But I wasn't even a goblin I was just doing a character that was in the bar 😭
I can do a decent voice until I'm with people
I found about dnd from stranger things
I found about dnd from being a nerd
I've always known just got scared by doing RP and finding people who would actually play
I think role-playing is important especially when I want to become an a actor
I only learned how to do voices slowly over time from trying to replicate them whenever I'm talking to people
You'd think I'm insane if you heard me in a call and I just start attempting to imitate a character
Whenever I try to do voices it either sounds weird, strained, forced, ineligible or some combination of the above.
I just get nervous half the time and lose the voice mid way
Hey imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring
Don't be if your future group cant see your brilliant goblin voice then they will protect be a very toxic group
hi im new to dnd and i wanna look for a party and stuff where should i go?
Should hear the goblin sometime LOL
Do you want to be a dm or a player?
#find-a-game might help ya, but I do recommend learning the rules first if you haven’t already. For that check out #learn-to-play and come back with any questions.
player
Still #find-a-game either way
alrighty
I still have to read a bunch of the DND rules till I even join a game
My brain gonna be buzzing with knowledge
#looking-for-players its for when you want to join a party
And play
But you should start with what Nugget recommended
OMG SAME
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
@hearty blaze do you want me to call you by a name instead of Nugget lol?
Wait I feel like I’ve said that to yall already
You probably did
It was towards me I do believe a bit ago
Nugget, Nuggie, Nugs, Niffler, some variation of that
But not [insert honorific here] Nugget, that makes me feel old
I remember now
Not me stealing elements from greek metrology for my character 😏
Had the urge to say fuggler for some reason
OMG same
Love Greek myth
Fuggler LMAO
Work of art
Me when I say Zeus stinks and he turns me into a billy goat
Yup he’d do that
At least I don't gotta pay taxes anymore
Get to eat grass for free
Im also very interested by the thought of different types of necromancers
My characters name is literally Athena ik its cliche but that's how I see her
Clio is a good one (my kitty is also named Clio after the goddess of music)
Time to give my character a traumatizing backstory 😄
Your a cat parent same i have two cats one is like 4 months old the other one 7 in human years
Mine have unhinged names
Someone gets it
Do you wanna move this to #non-dnd-topics
Sure
Hello everyone. New to D&D

Thanks a lot 🙂
Hey, where can I go to chat with people & get into a cool campaign lol
Me have question am reading the rules rn I and I cant seem to figure out when do I roll disadvantage and when advanced?
Also there are six dice what dice is for what ? Ik the d20 is for combat and stuff.
D4 is usually a damage dice. D6 is also usually a damage dice but is used in same randomised stuff. D8 is mostly damage. D10 is for damage and to work with percentile dice. Percentile dice are for random outcomes. D12 is for damage mostly.
These are just my experiences with the dice
A lot of things will give you advantage or disadvantage on a particular roll
Being prone, being hostile, being charmed, being blinded, being grappled, a bunch of spells, some class abilities all to name a few
There are a LOT
OK thanks
Basically, the d20 is the "determine if something succeeds" -die, so attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, etc.
The rest of the dice are used when required. Your spells will list which dice to roll when you succeed, weapons each list which die they use for damage, etc.
Hey I’m new to DND where do I join a campain
.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
When you make a D20 Test, being an Attack (like shooting with a bow or swinging a sword or casting a fire bolt), an Ability check (like acrobatics to keep balance, stealth to sneak, history to know historical knowledge, etc), or a Saving throw (such as when being targeted by most poisons, a fireball, charm and fear and stun effects)
Higher equals better.
If something says you have Advantage or Disadvantage, like a condition, class feature or species trait, spell, or other rule, then you do so. An example is having the Prone condition causing you to have Disadvantage on attack rolls, or having the Restrained condition doing that and giving you Disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws.
Advantage means you roll 2d20 and take the higher one. When rolling twice and only needing one to win, you effectively "have two chances to succeed".
Disadvantage means you roll 2d20 and take the lower one. When rolling twice and needing both to win, you effectively "need to succeed twice".
Question 🙋♂️
Is it bad if I used ai to help in the creation of my first character. Like backstory, appearance, bonds, flaws, personality traits ect
its not allowed in this server and people generally dont like it, but for a reference i guess you could use it
What do you mean not allowed??
AI generated posting isnt allowed in the server
Interesting 🤔
People really don’t like the ai do they. I find it helpful but I guess I am just stupid and not creative enough 🥺
There are suggestions for things like bonds and flaws and personality traits, and you can use those as points to either use or give inspiration to come up with your own.
If you want to bounce ideas off humans, you also talk about it in #character-discussion ! A lot of folks like to talk about character ideas.
It's a tool. Bounce ideas back and forth, but handing over the reins of generating something robs the user of being invested in something they've created themselves.
Like, if the AI has generated the backstory and all that, you might as well play a pre-generated character. And there are already plenty existing out there, might as well use one of those that are already made.
That’s what I did to a certain degree. Idk pretty much I knew like the race/class appearance and rough backstory I wanted but then I used chat gpt to word it better for me and stuff cause I didn’t know what I was doing. Then I would tweak it and change things so I liked it better discussed it with my dm he gave me pointers and ideas and I adjusted it more and then like rinse and repeat I guess if that makes sense
Gotcha.
dude im trying to get people into dnd, they came to me with "yeah i generated a character with chatGPT, he has this super cool attack that kills everyone and that his TRIANGLE FACTOR was 10"
Idk if that made any sense whatsoever. Then the other weekend I sat down with my sister who has played DnD and we made like a “final copy” of stuff and it changed a lot from what I had in the concept but I like it a lot
My dm also told me about a cleric domain that is not in the standard player handbook and that’s the one I am going to be going with. So that’s pretty cool 😎
anyway, we just remade it on an actual sheet and he still doesnt understand that triangle factor just..... isnt a thing
Triangle factor > love triangle?? > Doritos?? lol 😂
but then how did chatgpt get to a TRIANGLE FACTOR
(I don’t even know what that is lol)
it doesnt exist
A literal AI hallucination
which is the case for why AI is extremely bad at D&D.
Hilariously bad.
it also gave him some 3.5e race, 5e background, and 1e class
Literally the only legitimate use for an LLM I have gotten was essentially "rubber duck" moments. Where you're trying to figure out whatever it is you're contending with, and in trying to word-wrestle something that doesn't think, you end up explaining it to yourself accidentally.
true
So it is going to be, for 99.99999% of all use cases, going to be directly worse than either just reading rules yourself, or having someone help teach you.
and about that, if you dont understand something there are thousands of online dnd communities that can help you
Hello guys, im new at this game, do you have like an advice for me? Like What's the best class that i can use, et.c
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
It depends on how you want to play and what you want to get out of the game.
looking at it in "the best class" will ruin most peoples fun
There is no one best class anythingbutranger as they all have their own strengths
even ranger is strong in some situations
While somewhat a joke, Ranger does lose out on some raw combat power in most cases, for arguably niche benefits in exploration and wilderness survival, which is a rather rare occurence in the zeitgeist of D&D
Ik a place where you can create your characters looks?
it wasnt about art
Ohhh abt what
writing
can you read
exactly
Wait let me scroll to see what this is my bad for not reading everything
I used hero forge to like “make” my character in what I thought I wanted him to look like
Cool
Heroforge is pretty neat, yeah
Sometimes you can just get character concepts from fiddling around for something cool
it is
Ohhhhh
I'm bad at making armour and clothing for characters. In my mind that stuff just ends up being bland and generic.
Well just dont think its smart to use ai i think that kills the fun.And I dont think a person cant make their one story sure it might take time but its worth it please don't use ai.(its also bad for the environment)
Own*
So that’s what I originally did. First I read the player hand book. I got an idea on what I wanted to play. I then used hero forge to like visually create a character and then I wrote down on a notepad what I wanted for the name his actual appearance and other shit like a rough backstory age background what I thought were okay personality traits and shit. And then I asked chat gpt to like help me flesh it out a bit more. Then I got my dm to help me with that and he gave me pointers and then with my sister I got her to like help me in person and then I sent that back to my dm and he gave me a few more little adjustments to make. I only used ai to like write it better in a sense idk 🤷♂️ but the version I have now is not like my original concept or the version the ai spewed out. It’s has elements of it but he has developed into his own fleshed out character. Maybe I made a massive mistake and I am sorry for that 🥺🥺
It's not the end of the world. It's just been a big hot button for everyone.
That's totally different sorry for expressing myself like that if you want to use ai do it but I dont think its right now I understand what you meant
It sounds like a lot of folks helped you. I don’t think the AI step was even necessary!
Does dndbeyond still have that button to completely randomly roll a character?
yes
imma do that now
and make a backstory
At some point I want to run some anarchy of a one shot, randomly roll pre-gens and hand them out unseen to the players or even me. That sounds like a hilariously horrible idea.
wow, 10th level wizard with no non-upcasted level 3 or higher spells
also a normie, elf wizard
a 6 int
wow, really usable character!
My barbarian had rolled a 3 int until my DM forced me to re-roll that set of dice. Ended up with a 7.
And a Wis of 8. But he's got a cha of 12 so he has that going for him.
I’m thinking about doing a Blood Hunter/ Sorcerer character is that a good multi class idea?
What ability do blood hunters use for their spellcasting?
I know their whole deal is cutting themselves and making their weapons stronger. They’re like monster hunters I guess. I assume you know what Blood Hunter class is?
Vaguely. So their spellcasting is based on which ability score?
INT, but they can use WIS at the DM's discretion.
So not a great mix with sorcerer as they use Charisma.
You'll probably be using Dexterity for weapons and armour, and if you're in melee you'd want good Constitution too. Tough sell.
I really couldn't say, but I'm sure someone has an opinion.
I’m really doing it role play wise. Because the multi class fits his backstory
What benefits do you believe you can gain by taking levels in sorcerer instead of monoclassing in blood hunter?
Fireball and other OP spells
That would be five levels in sorcerer. What do you think you'd benefit by having blood hunter in there too?
Because I can turn into a Werewolf depending on the subclass
And the whole idea is awesome to me
Play a shifter same thing
I will share:
Not quite as good as the base classes.
It is in fact infamous for getting killed.
I know it’s a risky class but I mean I just wanted to get a feel for it yk
Sounds like you're trying to mix a full caster class with a melee function. That's an easy mix to make underpowered compared to a full single class. Druid might be an alternative.
Yeah Druid/ Sorcerer isn’t a bad multiclass either right? I mean I usually like to play Cleric or Paladin because I’m all about balance between magic and melee
But yeah thx
I think I’m gonna do Ranger/ Warlock instead for this guy.
Is that a good idea?
If we're getting into the specifics of how you're building your character, then we should probably move the discussion to #character-discussion. This channel is more meant to be used for explaining how to play and the basics of the rules
That being said, I do have to say that Blood Hunter is not an official class, and I would never recommend it for a beginner. Especially if its a multiclass, since multiclassing is also not recommended for newcomers
Well idk if I’m considered a beginner is the thing
I mean I’m doing a campaign right now as a Cleric
Sorry, I just assumed so because this is the newcomers channel. All the more reason to move the discussion to another channel then
No worries
DnD the loooooooong way
i havent played DND before, can my character be a skeleton? i didnt see a skeleton race or something
There isn't a skeleton species, no. The closest thing that might come to a skeleton is the old Reborn species option, but that species is just undead themed. It almost certainly won't do anything you want a skeleton to do.
oh thanks, kinda disappointing
If you have questions about foundry its best to ask them in #third-party. That is the channel for 3rd party tools and resources
Question how do write in #looking-for-players ?
#find-a-game has the full instructions, but the short version is that you need to use the server bot to fill out a form, then a post will be generated for you based on your answers in that form
Thanks

Hey guys im first time DMing a oneshot that was made balanced for 4-5 lvl 5 PCs and im doing it for 3 friends of mine that never played, i dont know how to adjust the encounters to 3 players so do i need dmpcs to fight alongside them or just ally npcs and how would you go about that?
never played dnd EVER but I thought it seemed cool, how do I join a campaign?
Welcome! Before you join a campaign, you should start with learning how to play, and how to make a character. The link to the free basic rules is in the bot post just a few messages up.
alr tysm :D
A few options:
- You could add in a sidekick or two, rotating who's in control each round. You can find those rules in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or an older playtest doc (https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/UA_Sidekicks.pdf).
- Break up an encounter into smaller ones. Say the encounter is supposed to be against 5 creatures. Make it three creatures who call for back-up if the party is handling it well (and no back-up if the party is struggling). Or just have fewer enemies per fight.
- Adjust stats: hit points, armor class, damage dice, bonuses to hit.
#dm-discussion is the place for more detailed conversation on these topics!
Hi, I'm looking to join a new campaign. I've wanted to play for a long time but I've never played before. I have a decent understanding of how it works. If people could point me in the right direction of how to find a campaign I can join that'd or know of one I'd greatly appreciate it

Greetings! I want to become a dm after a lot time.
I took a long break from dnd however and as a result i have become very much rusty with the rules and lore.
As of writing this i am working a full time job and i still did not get my work schedule as of yet.
Im very unsure what i am supposed to do

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Thanks you i will look into this tomorrow
Once i get my schedule i will be able to organize a session
look at #find-a-game for that
yes thanks

a huge part of the game is reading, to be honest. getting the hang of rolling at the table isn't too long to pick up, but knowing what things are and the wording are a big part of it and really help when read ahead of time.
I'm going to have to agree here. Once you read it a few times and then practice them in a game, they usually click together
I'm a new player and I'm looking for a game, I have some familiarity with dnd, but this would be my first real experience
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
hello ! is there a french dnd server ?
I'm not aware of a specific one but I'm sure they're out there. But you'll likely have a better chance of finding them through Discord's Discover tool and looking for French TTRPG servers.
Or other Discord server search tools
oh alright thanks
You could also check #looking-for-community and see if any servers there advertise they host games in other languages
Hello, is anyone available to help me fill up the "looking for dm" thing? I'm like, fresh new (had my first game yesterday) and I don't understand most things
What about it do you need help with?
Mostly, all of it
Do you know how to get the form?
yes
That’s a start
Just type the command in any channel and it'll open the bot
Only you will see it pop up and then you can fill out the details
This
Oki
Kinda, I played my first yesterday
How do I..
What’s your Timezone
Pm or am
pm
Okay okay, gotchu
Wait
Nvm
EST is what you’re looking for (Eastern Standard Time)
So maybe add that too idk
Okay, okay
Next: availability
That I'll figure out myse

Aight
the style os
Then game style next
that's yeah, I don't know
Uh, a mix of both yes
Or a 60:40 split?
Most games will be a mix, we just wanna figure out the ratios
Do you have a preference or do you want an equal split?
I'd like an equal split
The put that
Do you want high fantasy, political, horror, sci-fi, or some mix of smt like that?
Uh, I have no idea what those mean specifically
I know the basic meanings of the words but like, not the dnd meaning
The meanings are the same pretty much. Think of them as book genres
Okay, hmmm, I'd love a good high fantasy one/sci-fi, but I can adapt to anything
Then put that
Also put in 5e
Well, specifically either 2024 or 2014 if you have a preference
what's the difference?
Which did you learn?
Scratch that, have you even learnt the rules? I assumed so cuz you’ve already played a game
lol
My friend played their own version of it
That’s not gonna be helpful here sorry if it’s their own version
Just put down 2024 and read #learn-to-play after you make the post and get learnin
Preferably you’d do it before actually
Okay okay, thanks
Now: Preferred way to play
Play by post and VC (voice chat/on call) or a mix of both mainly in terms of online. If you have a specific medium you like to use note that down.
Holding on
you can let go
No, playing by post is purely text based
One more mandatory thing
The opt in stuff
Do you want a community game, a paid game or other services offered?
Community game is.. like a set group?
I think it’s like a multiple groups in a lil community
What's the one with a set group?
Okay, thank you!
Hiii

I like the username
Hi all. I am looking at a one shot on DriveThruRPG. I use a TV as a VTT for maps, but that's all. I do not use a program like Roll20.
I was looking to buy the book and pdf, but then noticed they sell VTT Roll20 option. The file type says Roll20 VTT. Would this be the version I should purchase to gain access to downloadable maps for the one shot for me to display on my VTT, or would I need to use Roll20 specifically?
I hope that makes sense. Any help is appreciated.

This channel is for helping new to D&D folks get started with the core game rules and mechanics. This question would best fit in #third-party (use of a 3rd party tool like Roll20) or even ask on the Roll20 forums/server (I think they have their own Discord).
Gotcha. Thanks!
im new to dnd can anyone help me???
Sure. Read #learn-to-play , maybe the first few chapters of the free basic rules, and ask any questions you have here!
Hey everyone how are you doing today
I’m doing
Super D&D noob here. Hosting for my in real life friends for the first time. College roommate used to host, but we don't know rules too much and just have fun. It'll be me hosting with two players. Campaign is gonna be boss focused. Anyone know a good range for boss health and damage rolls for a party of two people around level 3?

Hello
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

What’s a reaction?
An action your character could take if it meets the criteria for said Reaction
For example if a enemy attempts to move 5 feet away from your character when in melee combat - your character can use their reaction to make an opportunity attack against that enemy.
Your character would expend it's Reaction and make 1 attack roll (with a melee weapon) against that enemy that is moving away.
Thanks. Next question, what’s a bonus action?

Drat thought we had one for that
A bonus action is a special action - it's typically considered a short quick action that doesn't use a full Action
Typically a class feature will explain whether it takes an Action, Bonus Action, or Reaction to use.
Thanks, now what’s a class feature?
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
A class provides mechanical game features.
For instance the Fighter class has a feature called "Second Wind" which allows them to expend it to regain some hit points
If you haven't already, I suggest taking a good look at #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I keep hearing about something mixing two classes together so what’s that about
That's multiclassing. Basically when you gain a level, you could take a mevel in another class, instead of your original one
It's not as simple as that though and has a bunch of things that can make your character really weak, and definitely not recommended for a newcomer
For the given reasons above, I will also recommend avoiding multiclassing for a newcomer.
Mastering the context of class features, action economy, and so on, will be vital for getting into more advanced options.
Multiclassing is like being a bartender. Unless you know what you’re doing, it’s probably gonna taste like crap.
But once you master it, you can whip up a crazy combo that knocks your socks off.
It's kinda like baking. If you combine things in just the right way, it makes something amazing. Mess up an ingredient or proportion and you make a nasty slough.
Hi :() I'm new to DnD and have a lot of ideas I would love to get down. Is there a way to make characters fitting within the rules using all the source books without dropping hundreds for all the books on DnD beyond?
The best approach is start with the free basic rules and focus on the mechanics of the system.
Use that as a basis for fleshing out your ideas. You'll have alot more success than working the other way around.
The free rules can help
All the stuff from the books that actually cost money make sense with the free rules. You can find it in #learn-to-play
