You pick a back ground and you get a feat and a +2/+1 to add to 2 scores
Add 2 to intelligence and 1 to dex
You’re an artisan, and that’s best for an artificer
Now decide your species
Ooo bunny
Yeaaaaa!!!!
Equipment and spell
Proficiency????
What your characters good at, skill wise.
Like perception, acrobatics, athletics, etc.
Ahhhh I see
How many can I choose?
Class description will tell you
You get those two for free, then choose two from Arcana, History, Investigation, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Sleight of Hand
I don’t think I’m forgetting any
Okay so I chose sleigh of hand and…. Which one is better nature or medicine?
Probably nature, but it’s campaign dependent
Okie done then
I’d grab perception, that’s probably the most important skill, but you can choose whatever
Wht does perception do?
Helps you… perceive things
Ah I see…okay then I choose perception
Now what do I do with the modifier?
And do I write smth in proficiency bonus?
Gimme a bit, smt came up
Ok
If ur level 1 do +2
Then +3
Okay
Ok done! Whats a heroic inspiration?
basically a free reroll the DM can give you
Just d20
Aight so my gut was right
Now…. What do I do? And whats initiative and passive perception?
just d20
no, only a d20
Ahhh they changed heroic inspiration in 2024 to any die and I hate that
Initiative is your dexterity modifier
wait they did
I got into dnd in 2023, and only learnt the heroic inspiration rules then. Didn’t know they changed it.
Just googled it and yup. I won’t be changing lol
Hello all
Yeah some GMs don't like that particular change
Greetings, god apple
Someone remember that?
How can we help you today?
-# yes?
I'll see for myself
Any way initiative is based on you’re dexterity modifier and sets the order of turns usually in combat
And when I say we I mean everyone else here, imma sleep now
NIGHT
Good night
Good night
Initiative is your dexterity modifyer + anything your abilitys add to it
Your passive perception is 10+ perception modifyer
How strictly do y‘all follow the character creation sheet? I used Roll20 for character creation and personally found the options for backstory etc a little too restricted and unfitting for a lot of characters.
The said on a site taht its 10+ ability modifier + the perception modifier
I don't consider the RP fields as part of the sheet
Umm so how do I choose the weapons?
Starting equipment
Anyway byeeee
Bye
Okee
It's meant to be your average perception score
So if u have a +3 in perception then your passive perception is 13
What class are you?
For background, as a DM, I consider the default should be custom. But that's just me.
If you stick by the book you'll have less problems with DMs that have different expectations.
Artificer

Howdy! Scroll up a little and you'll find a Dyno post with a bunch of useful links including the Free Rules. Give the first couple of chapters a glance and maybe pick a class, species and background.
Let us know what you decide and someone will help with the next steps.
oo thanks heaps !
had a bit of a read and will continue later, id go for warlock elf acolyte!
ooo sounds interesting
how deep do u guys go with character customisation anyways ?
im just going off the rules but honestly i have some pretty interesting ideas 🤔 just wonder what other people do
Hows it going everyone?
Im new to D&D and trying to figure out the different classes
Is 4 full casters 1 full martial a bad ratio in a team?
If you describe what kind of character you want, I can say which one matches that
There's no such thing as a bad party composition
Said the full barbarian party the moment they needed to talk their way out of something
Oki
Barbarians can absolutely talk their way out of fights
Give the Basic Rules a read.

Hi I have a question
What's the question
ask it!
What IS roll20?
its a vtt (virtual tabletop) for maps
Oh what about DND beyond how to join a kingdom
a kingdom?
dnd beyond is for character sheets and rolling btw
Oh okay tell me more
D&D Beyond is a digital character sheet with a store for digital D&D books. It also has some VTT features
Oh
you can make character sheets, add homebrew, download homebrew (with a subscription), and much more customization
Okay Will IS dere a DND app for DND maps In mobile?
you can technically use owlbear
its not great
(or yk do theater of the mind)
Most VTT programs run very poorly on mobile
And that IS
what is?
theater of the mind is description only
if thats what you were asking
“Theater of the mind” is a fancy term for “use your imagination”
It means to speak aloud what’s happening and what the world looks like, rather than using a map to depict it
sup guys
I'm new to dnd and have been watching some content while getting ready to play and I've seen various species that I can't find in the player's handbook. Can someone explain why and how I can find them?
Those are typically in other sourcebooks; the most recent is Monsters of The Multiverse
if you state what species you were wanting to see we can direct you to the source
I want to find more non-humanoid species
probably the MoM book
Okay, i'll look into that
yoo
Trying to figure out a fun class combo and race combo. I enjoy being useful and decent in combat but love having abilities and options out of combat (we have combat once every couple sessions so most everything is out side of it) and recommendations? I’m joining a campaign at level 4
First thing came to mind is
Orc Bard
Hi everyone is there a specific channel to find a new table? New here 😬
They’re all about the same in that regards
Rogues, druids, rangers, artificers and rock gnomes are a bit better for out of combat, but you should pick what sounds fun to you
Haven’t played much artificers, how “good” are they? I’ve heard they can be tougher or more annoying to play but maybe I heard wrong 🤷♂️
You really don’t have to worry about how good your character will be, they’re all balanced well
Im trying to teach a friend DnD and he wants to be a monk...that will be hard first experience
Artificers a fine. They’re well balanced and very fun. It’s my personal favorite class. That being said, they probably aren’t very beginner friendly. They’re the only class in the game that isn’t included as part of the free basic rules, so you have to purchase additional content to be able to play as them. And their mechanics are just a little bit more complex than the other options.
They’re not so complex that you can’t play as one if you’re a newcomer. It just means you’ll have to put in a little extra work to understand everything
Not really. Monks are generally considered to be one of the simpler classes in the game
?tag new complexity
Class Complexity
Below is a quick overview of which classes take the most effort to learn. Low complexity classes make for an easier starting point, while higher complexity classes offer more versatility. Any of these classes can be played by beginners, so pick whatever excites you!
Hi all 👋
Huh, I guess WOTC and I disagree on this 😅
I didn't meant flat out complex...I think low dmg wont be according to his imagination
They say wizards are "average complexity", so I wouldn't count it against you
I mean Im playing as a Warlock in my first DnD campaign...Ik doing fine...
Im a strategist and a area controller of my party...
The 2024 version of monks do perfectly fine damage. I wouldn’t call it low
Ig, I did read 2014 rules...
They changed old classes dmg too?
Most of the changes in the 2024 update were buffs to player options.
He wants to be a Elemental Stick using Monk
Idk both can go hand to hand...
2 different subclass
Using a staff is a weapon choice, not a subclass. Both of these work perfectly fine with each other
What do you mean by 2 different subclasses? Monk is the class and Warrior of the Elements is the subclass.
I think I read it wrong Ig...
I read for a monk to use a weapon you need a specific subclass
That's not correct
That’s false
Wrong
Oh, well, then...i can help bring his imaginations to life
Could use an extra set of eyes. I'm running a D&D night for our school and I threw together a document to introduce D&D to folks just starting out to play. I wanted to include enough that they can do a one-shot but not so much to overwhelm someone. If anyone has time to review it for accuracy, I'd appreciate an extra set of eyes: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wK_9Ygf15AeEaGWC7taRO7UAUo_DHF2u/view?usp=sharing
One thing
Critical success only applies to attacks
Not ability checks
And death saving throws
Although many DMs house tile that it does apply to ability checks
Indeed, though it’s not official and I thought I was worth pointing out
Appreciate it - should have a "could" in there
You also didn’t mention how many hit dice a player replenishes on a long rest
True - I might even take that part out. They're playing a one-shot so won't have time for a long rest either way.
Also, you called kinda skipped over reactions
You did mention the essence of opportunity attacks, but maybe expand on reactions as a whole a tad more. A few sentences is fine
Hello i have never played Dnd before but I would like to get into it when the looking for players Dm's post 50% rp or heavy RP does that mean i need to like speak differently? or i guess I'm a bit nervous to jump head first into a party as i don't wanna ruin the game for any other players
these defintions are not set in stone but heavy RP probably means you have to do a decent amount of stuff in character (though that doesnt mean voice acting)
50% rp just is an expectation of how much time of the sessions will be spend outside of combat
but dont worry. Most tables dont feel someone new and inexperienced ruins a game with their lack of know how to play.
its mostly anti-social and selfish behavior that tends to ruin some games
So while looking for a game should i be looking for some kind of description along the lines of new players welcome or anything like that?
that can help, but i would not limit myself to only those games. Just ask the DM of a game that looks interesting if they are okay with a newbie
okay and should i have a character ready? or do i make one once i find a party to join?
Make one for practice
If you haven’t already
Butj find it best to collaborate with the other players to make a backstory
so, it doesnt hurt to have some character concepts ready and to practice character building, but often when joining a new game, its best to make a character for that world or to adapt one of your concepts to it
Gotcha i will do that thanks i appreciate the help
Hey, what is play by post
It's a text based game

how far would you say a character with heightened smell and hearing could hear inside a cavern?
I'd probably give them advantage on relevant checks rather than increase the distance.
Usually a feature that gives you such senses will say what it does.

Hello!
Heh there! Welcome to the official D&D Discord server!
If you’re new to D&D check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel
And feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them
We have a lot of channels for specific D&D topics so check out #channel-guide to see them all
Hey everyone. I've got a question about warlocks and pact magic. Please tag me or reply to this or the question because I won't get a notification otherwise
What’s your question?
My warlock went to cast Witch Bolt, and I didn't know he could only cast it at max level, and he only got two slots for that. How can he cast his spells at lower levels? Did he make a bad choice somewhere character building? I'm a new DM (2 years) and he's a new player jumping into our campaign
Warlocks can't cast spells at lower levels.
Pact magic always casts spells at the level listed in the warlock class table based on level
Warlocks can only cast spells at the maximum level that they have. For example, a 5th level Warlock has two 3rd level spell slots... and that's it.
So they can only cast two spells per short rest?
Usually, yes.
Yeah at the trade off of invocation customizability
Their Magical Cunning ability does grant them a spell slot back 1/ Long rest
Wow. That's a bummer
They do get all their pact slots back on a short rest though
That's true
Benefits: casting at full power all the time, regain all slots at short rest
Costs: limited slots
Mechanically, this is beneficial in longer adventures with fewer long rests. Let's look at an example:
At 5th level, your Warlock can cast a 3rd level spell twice. Your Bard can cast a 3rd level spell twice.
Your party takes a short rest. Now your Warlock can cast two more 3rd level spells... but your Bard is still out. They can't cast any.
The more short rests an adventure has before a long rest, the more your Warlock begins to outpace the other casters.
In addition invocations add quite a lot of power. At-will spells, special senses, cantrip modifications, etc
I see what you guys are saying. Did that change? I was playing a warlock a few months ago and I feel like I had leveled spells
This has always been the way that Warlock worked
Thanks guys. My player had either question, but I'm not 💯 on what it was. I think it had something to do with pact of the blade, but I'm not sure
If you can figure out what that question was, we'll be more than happy to answer here
Thanks again. I love that this is available. I used to play 2E as a kid at our local library, but I haven't played since then and I don't remember much. Like I said, I've been running campaigns and playing in a few for two years, so I'm still not as versed as I could be.
I try to make sure I'm telling a good story rather than studying rules
Legit.
Did you figure out your player's other PotB question?
I did thanks
Yall, any dungeon master tips yall can give me? I just did my first session 0 last week ever and flavored it to be a job interview esc scenario where the players tell me their backgrounds and I let them do some Combat to test everything. They said I did a good job but I still wanna know any extra tips if possible
Keep in mind the players are telling a story. You're not there to beat them and they're not trying to "win."
But also, death should be an option
Mmm I see I see. Well its good that so far I'm letting them win cause they kicked my three owlbear's butts cause I rolled very badly hahaha.
Yeaah, i have an idea for that in my campaign. Basically one player can revive indefinitely but everytime he does, 5 years of his lifespan is taken from him
Is that too unfair or is it kind of balanced?
That depends. 5 years is effectively a non issue for the longer lived species, and completely a non-issue for species that have an indefinite lifespan (e.g. Reborn, Warforged)
Especially for newbies I recommend sticking to rules as written as close as possible
I see i see. Well his character is a 25 year old human so he can only revive like... 11 times
I should make it 10 years instead because my player loves this backstory....
Death is a pretty big deal in DnD, both mechanically and for roleplay. It's rare, and usually results in some of the most gripping scenes a campaign can experience.
The idea of "oh, but I just come back" is cheapening that experience quite a bit. Especially with something as mechanically meaningless as "but now you're a little older".
I'd recommend working with the player to find a slightly different backstory hook that works more in line with how DnD is played.
Hey guys, I've played 1 campaign of DND before (not to completion unfortunately), based loosely on the Lost Mine of Phandelver book, with a few liberties and creative choices as both my party and DM were new to the game, and I pretty much still am😂, I was wondering is there anywhere I can find oneshots or a party welcoming of inexperienced players? I don't want to tank other players with my lack of general knowledge
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

Welcome! Once you've gotten an general understanding of the Basic Rules, you can follow the link above to learn how to get your search started on this server.
I tihnk you'll find that most games will welcome new players, even if they don't advertise it directly.
thank you so much🙏
Hi guys! So I'm going to my first campaign next week and I'm joining late bc someone dropped out. I'm wondering if there are any unspoken rules/etiquette that new players should know? I'm not very close with the other players or dm yet (except for one friend)
Mmm I see, okay that makes sense then
I do also did a thing where in a desperate battle, he can use up all of his lifespan to summon his God into the mortal realm (weakened to like level 15). I dunno if it's balanced or not tho
Cause I'm making them fight a level 18-20 boss at the end of their campaign
- Try to create a character for the DM’s world rather than make a character for the world to work around
- Try to create a character that others would want to adventure with
- Try to create a character that’s naturally invested in the hook of the campaign
- If someone is exhibiting problematic behavior or if there’s an issue that’s dampening others fun (e.g. wanton murder, inappropriate/triggering content) handle it above the table instead of in-character
Making monsters with class levels is not recommended
I see i see, what else is recommended?
Take a look at the monsters that already exist for the encounter budget you want for the boss fight
Assuming your campaign will go up to level 18, a CR18-20 monster with maybe some lower CR minions may be appropriate
Hmmm, okay. I can work with that
Oh nah, I'm making it a really hard battle where a bunch of like level 12 npc including the players will join in. So I wanna make the last guy hard so that it's memorable
Can I nudge tthis DM discussion over to #dm-discussion?
This channel is intended to help new to D&D folks get started with the core game rules and mechanics - thanks!
Ahhh sorry sorry
I'll keep this in mind thank you!!
Ello :3

Hey everyone! I'm super new and I'm building my first character, and so far, I'm a mountain dwarf fighter, and I'm going for a Frontline tank build. What would be my optimal subclass? I was leaning towards barb, but barb is better suited for DPS is it not? And what job would you suggest? (Battle master, champion, etc) If I got any of the terminology wrong I apologize, like I said I'm super new.
Barb? That’s a whole nother class.
And also barbarians are tankier than fighters
This is a great question for #character-discussion , if only because tanking is a bit of a different concept in D&D
Yes I'm asking about sub classes, or multi-classing
Welp let’s continue in #character-discussion
Ok

hello
i'm new and i dont know how to play
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
Oh!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.

Do you guys copy the whole class feature into your sheet or just the name and have the rule book nearby ? (im using a tablet and digital sheet)
If there is some space, I try to summarise the feature and then put a page reference or link. If not, only the name and the reference.
I have the feeling the descriptions are very long. I will do a Title and short summary 🙂 thx
You don't have to for most digital sheets, like DDB.
Hello, I am new to dnd, I know couple of things about it through reading and friends, but I have never played it before, I do have an idea of my charcter but I aam not sure how o proceed from there
Hello! Go to #learn-to-play to get a grasp on the rules, and go to #character-discussion for help with your character. I recommend reading the free rules in #learn-to-play first tho.

Hello. Nice to meet y'all. a new joiner here and total beginner here. I am far away from my family and friends and its a little bit hard to find a community where I reside for now, the best way to play is paid online games?
Paid games tend to have less competition for slots, that's true, but other options exist.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Thanks, @wild onyx
It's a way, but not necessarily the best way
Pros and cons. It costs money, sure, and it's always a bit of a gamble as to whether the game is going to get a proper ending.
On the other hand it's good to pay your artists and DMs that have a bit of extra cash can spend that on things to enhance the experience. Player commitment tends to be higher too.
When it comes to martial classes, description is everything! How do you swing? What body parts do you aim for? What stance are you taking? These help paint every scene for all the players, breathing life into the combat.
What's your subclass, or have you not gotten there yet?
Also don't forget thrown weapons. I believe the barbarian kit starts with a bundle of javelins?
beserker! and yes javelins
Maybe work out a set of moves, one line descriptions to drop in here and there. The broad swing, the savage slash, the frenzied chopping, the contemptuous backhand.
Have they got any particular fighting style or training? Is there anything distinctive about their weapon?
i made her lore out to be in short she escaped from a gladiator arena where she was forced to fight day in and day out
so thats sonething def to take into consideration in fighting style maybe
Perhaps her rage is exuberance, thriving against the odds, playing to an audience.

No worries. Glad we could solve the mixup. Though if I could give you a piece of advice, I really don't think its a good idea to do a "pvp night" event if you're new to D&D. This game is not meant to be played as PVP. Some people do it anyways just because they want to, but the whole thing is wildly unbalanced and not at all a good representation of what playing D&D is actually like or how it should go. Obviously I can't stop you if this is something you really want to do, but I just don't want you to get a bad first impression of the game when pvp in general is typically considered to be taboo
Eggs armed with hammers.
Thanks for the heads up! I planned to just watch the event since I haven't made my character or ever played a game yet, but I'll be sure to take anything that happens with a grain of salt 👍
Does anyone have any tips and tricks for a new player like me to D&D?. Never played it befor but would like to learn it and play it.

Thank you
Me and a group of friend want to play dnd and want to know which book would be best (i have played bg3 so ik the basics of the game)
#learn-to-play The free Basic Rules is a good place to start.
BG3 is very different from D&D, just something to keep in mind
The basic rules are free on DND beyond, and have everything you need to start playing. Keep in mind BG3 isn’t always accurate to the rules of DND
Thanks
If you decide you want to dive in and spend some money, the place to start would be with the Player's Handbook. It's the core book of the game.
But use the free materials first and decide if you enjoy the game first!
Howdy, am new here and somewhat new to DND, I know the concept of it just dont know to properly make a character's stats and such
Also #learn-to-play
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Man thats a lot of reading
welcome to dnd
You don't have to memorize it. Just become familiar with the terms and core game mechanics. I'd suggest starting with the first 2 chapters of the free rules.
Alright
:/ what would be the best way to find a group that is EU based and newcomer friendly?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
That said, if you look at availability rather than time zones, you may still find something. A DM may be in a different time zone but still running at a time that works for you
are there any regional EU servers you can recommend?
I’m new to dnd, are modern guns like a thing? Or do I have to use like muskets
Depends on the setting but there are indeed guns in 5e. Ask your GM
Depends on whether your DM allows it in their game/setting but yes. And laser guns too.
But very dependent on the DM allowing it or not.
Thanks
no idea about the 5.2e rules, but in 5.1e there's even futuristic firearms in the DMG.
They’re in 2024 as well
Because they’re in the DMG in both editions; ask your DM for permission to use them first
i ve never played dnd and i m not sure how to start. i ve read some stuff and created one character, although i did it alone so maybe not very well. to start should i just look for some people to play 1 game while i learn? or do i need to know the stuff better before playing it?
you won't fully absorb stuff until you've been playing for a bit. look for a level one campaign or one-shot that mentions beginners.
If you feel like you have a passing knowledge of the core game mechanics (no you don't have to have it memorized), then yeah, go find a group and start playing D&D!

you will still be learning and correcting things here and there even after a couple of years. the regular things that get used often will become familiar. but there are always things that only get used once in a while that you'll need to look up. it happens. the table generally just rolls with it since it happens to everyone.
Indeed. Been playing this game for years and I still miss things or mess things up. But the important thing is that you and your group are having fun playing D&D together.
Hi guys, how are you? I'm new to the group and Discord.
hyped. i'm running a game this weekend
helloooo

Run your ideas by fellow DMs in #dm-discussion - and welcome to the fun of playing D&D as the DM!
Alright
if you need something simple to run for the first time ever as a DM, i suggest Peril in Pinebrook. it is simple, quick, runs through most types of things you'll need to do as a DM, and it isn't overwhelming.
hi im new to dnd and i was wondering if someone could help me with building a character in dnd beyond aswell as explaining the basics of the game to me
how basic do you mean?
like ive never touched anything to do with dnd other than watching legends of on yt

there's some really good places to start. Peril in Pinebrook is a nice read too, for players and dungeon masters
Can you summon a dragon as a dragon sorcerer??
You can get the Summon Draconic Spirit -spell, though it isn't limited to the draconic sorcerer subclass
Can someone explain how dnd works in like baby terms cause like I watched like a few explanations and I js cant understand them😭
Can I ask a Wizard question(mechanics) in relation to something I am seeing on CR here?
Holy crap is Nichola tesla
game where you do stuff and roll dice to c how good u r at doing stuff and depending on what you roll, the dm says what happens and how good it was
So basically glorified gambling simulator?
yea
Most of the time you roll a 20 sided die to see if you succeed at something, when success is uncertain (attacking enemies, using your skills, etc.) and add any relevant modifiers to boost your chances
That's like, 80% of the badic rules lol
Beyond that you just follow the rules of your abilities as written
That's the most basic simplified explanation
some ppl make u gain xp like pokemon and some decide when u lvl up
When you level up, you gain new features. Your class and race will list what you get at what level, and you add those to your character sheet
Are those like set in game or like does the dm decide what skills yoh get and stuff
It's set in the class features
Good to know
DM can also decide on stuff, but that's called homebrew
some ppl make their own and thats called homebrew
As many as you like but you will find you're not as effective the more you multiclass into
Game has 13 classes, you could theoretically have all of them, but thats multiclassing, and beyond newcomer topic honestly
if ur new ideally u should only do one
Nice cause I was thinking I would be a mage necromancer in my first campaign
You could just take Wizard with necromancer subclass
u can be a wizard and choose a necromancer specialisation
No need to multiclass for that
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

Nice
(also necromancer isn't it's own class anyways)
I assumed that
it is a school of magic
Nice but my mine problem is I cant find people to play dnd with😭
Check out #find-a-game
thats the first and hardest step
Very very sad😭
Though as a player it's gonne take a while
I have ONE one singular person to play it witu
And that means someone has to be the dm and play the game
At the same time
1on1 sessions arent as bad just depends on ur chemistry with the person
We've been friends since 3rd grade but we both js are to dumb to understand dnd😭
That actually sounds fun, what if u have like npcs in the party that the player can control like baldurs gate
yea thats usually what happens
I wanna get into dnd cuz I’ve spent 100 hours on bg3 and have a couple friends I want to DM for
Don’t know where to start tho lol
I dont like doing that tho cause then I could keep manipulating situations in my favor and makes it less luck based
ur familiar with the world and have friends, thats like 80% of the way there
fr tho theres some good starter adventures to run like lost mine of phandelver
I want to use the world of Toril and the faerun continent, but like I want ideas for an actual plot cuz bg3 has the illithid and i want smth to motivate my players to actually move with a linear story
I went through dnd tok and kept seeing the phrase one shot what does that mean cause I have a vague idea
It’s like a one session adventure I think
Oh ok
a linear story is kinda the opposite of dnd tho. i mean it can happen but only with the right players
u can have a main plot but dont expect ur players to do exactly what u think they will
Eh what I mean by linear story is like a boss at the end of the tunnel, maybe I didn’t phrase it right I js want like cookie crumbs to lead my players to it and also like a big picture, don’t know how to get those
Ya im prepared for that lmao my friends would def do some silly shit
My friend pitch for his character is a rouge that genuinely is js a freaky ahh guy🙏 😭
jus start small if its ur first time
HI (●’◡’●)ノ
running something prewritten will give u a grasp for the rules and how adventures r structured
which often r structured the way u described
So what prewritten one do you recommend for a 2 player session
hard to balance 2 players so u might have to give them npc companions. but theres lost mine of phandelver, dragon of icespire peak, dragon of stormwreck isle, and a final option could be waterdeep dragon heist
waterdeep dragon heist can be hard to run for new players tho (i heard)
Thats a lot
There’s also the new box sets, Heroes of the Borderlands and Stranger Things
but it is a low level simpleish adventure
Nice
yh they made a lot of starter sets
and theres even yt guides on running these
Im gonna do some research on necromancers and stuff so I can understand what im gonna be dealing with
one of the villains of lost mine of phandelver is a necromancer i think
pretty cool
u can choose something called a background that influences ur skills
Ohh
Yes, it's part of character creation
but if u mean a written backstory its rlly up to u
There's a chapter in the free basic rules that gives an overview of making a character
But you don’t get to say, “My character used to be a god so he gets all these extra powers.”
Good to know good to know
Yeah makes sense I was js gonna add like his dad used to be wizard so he has his old faded spell book that he has to fix himself and restore it so he can use it as a clue to find his dad
but if u wanna choose to not take extra languages cuz “my character lived in a monastery his whole life” then ur allowed to do that
Nice
that is epic
Creates a wood-elf ranger for a friend's DnD campaign
Makes them massively traumatised with emotional attachment to a birdman with daddy issues
😭
Can someone explain how to play DND, I don't understand it that much
Thank you
how do i know if my character is good enough?
hey chat i plan to run my first ever oneshot soon with some friends
is there a channel that explains damage types and how that works like fire damage, cold damage, vs normal dmg
thanks in advance! :p
in what context?
If you like playing them
Sorry, if you and your table like you playing them
i have a character i want to play but i just don;t think it's good enough to be played
yeah i'm not even there yet
What do you feel the character is missing?
Then send it to #character-discussion and we’ll discuss the character
Because this might need some analysis that may benefit from the input of multiple people
okayy
I still haven’t received the discord reward on the Roblox game
Like YouTube channel, or discord channel
Cuz we can explain the damage types here
I don’t believe there is an official partnership between D&D, Roblox, and Discord. I would perhaps check Discord’s requirements for the reward and contact them if there is an error
There isn’t really a “normal” damage. Damage types are unique only in how they interact with resistances, immunities, and vulnerabilities.
Damage types also don’t confer any special benefits or downsides inherently. So fire damage on its own wouldn’t, say, light an enemy on fire but an effect might deal fire damage and light objects on fire.
The closest thing we have to “normal” is bludgeoning, piercing and slashing. Well, assuming they mean “normal” as “physical”.
They’ve left the server, ignore them
apparently an invite to the roblox game sent him here
There’s also the “magical” descriptor which normally applies only to bludgeoning/piercing/slashing damage (e.g. for a magic weapon).
Again as above only interacts with resistances, vulnerability, and immunity
get this man a true
Basically, different attacks deal different types of damage, and each monster or entity is weak, neutral or resistant to any certain attack type.
Think pokemon.
To explain this: resistances, immunities and vulnerabilities are basically, well, resistances, immunities and vulnerabilities against certain types of attacks: those are defined by damage types.
A creature can be vulnerable (2x damage), resistant (0.5x damage), and immune(no damage)
Again, think pokemon if you’ve played it
In summary for those effects, a creature might have resistance, immunity, and/or vulnerability to certain damage types.:
- Resistance: 1/2x damage from the type
- Immunity: 0x damage from the type
- Vulnerability: 2x damage from the type
Note that these mechanics are performed after any other damage modifiers. If the result has a decimal you round down.
Ah beat me to it
Rolled too low on initiative, eh?
Got the surprised condition so I got disadvantage 😅
that wouldve been a sleight of hand check🤓
I hope you get a toilet mimic infestation
i am a toilet mimic
anyway, i use pseudopod
To illustrate an example, let’s say you had resistance to bludgeoning damage and you had a feature that reduced bludgeoning damage by 3. Now you get hit for an attack that deals 14 bludgeoning damage:
- First you would apply your damage reduction. 14 —> 11
- Second you would apply your resistance. 11 —> 5.5
- Third you would round down since you got a decimal result. 5.5 —> 5
So instead of taking 14 bludgeoning damage you would take 5.
a toilet mimic is actually so scary
imagine sitting down and instantly realising u cant stand back up
i meaaaaaaaaan
Well, you can’t stand up without a lower body
i was referring to the sticky nature of mimics but yea true
I’ve regularly referenced the idea of a bed mimic

Have you tried this then?
I am down in south Australia
Oh a fellow Aussie
I have looked into game arcades to play but most the time they are full and can't have any more players
I’m not from South Australia, so idk what stores yall have, so I’d recommend checking your local library or searching up “table top games stores near me” and seeing how it goes.
Ah, that’s a shame
Thanks I will look into thiss
Hi ! I am totally a newbie in dnd and I would love to make friends and learn about this univers ! I don’t know how to really begin to learn about lore, rules,… I would love to find a campaign and join them
Welcome to the official D&D Discord server ran by Wizards of the Coast/D&D. As for finding a group to play with, we have several Looking For Game channels. Please read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use those channels.
about the lore, most DMs make their own lore or add on existing lore, there isnt really one set lore or universe
there is a multiverse tho
Oh okay ! Which would be the most interesting to read first to have a good idea of the universe ?
there isnt really a universe
that kinda the point, there is a multiverse
where all dnd games take place
I have been playing D&D for a while, but I'm new to this server. Is there a chat or channel centered around finding new players to start a campaign with?

Hii
It says "If you are unable to create a character due to missing options, return to the Home tab and change your source settings." but I went to the home tab and can't find what source settings I should change
It's at the very top, directly under "Character Preferences". You'll want to enable "Core Rules" as a baseline.
Hey thanks for replying. But everything including that is enabled. Should I disable something or chose something elsewhere?
Hmm, no that sounds like some sort of bug. Perhaps try to reload your browser window.
What options are you looking for? Not all content is freely available, so if you don't own the books on DDB or otherwise have access to it via content-sharing, some options won't be available to you.
Oh. That also shows up if you haven't selected or filled the necessary fields during the creation process. Have you assigned your ability scores?
No but now I did and it worked. Thanks for your help
Yo I just found a group entirely of beginners around my age
I need that tbh
What's reverse ac
Where are you seeing the term?
The web
That's not an official term in the game. I honestly don't have any clue what it's actually referring to.
It sounds like a houserule or homebrew then because its not an official term in 5th edition
At best it might be referring to THAC0 which is like an ad&d 2nd edition thing
I went to the comments of where I found it and someone said it was like reverse armour class
"reverse AC" and "reverse armor class" mean the same thing, since AC stands for Armor Class.
Either way, it's a term that someone on the Internet made up, and isn't a real thing in the game.
Oh I see

Hey guys, the cool down for sending a message in the lfg channel is a week, are there any other official servers that host one-shots or mainly lfgs? I'm still pretty new to dnd
The cooldown for making a post of your own is one week. You can respond to as many posts in the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community as catch your fancy. There are threads attached to each post where you can chat.
Other spaces like roll20 have their own forums or discord, reddit, local game stores are other good spaces
Ic ic, thank you. It's just kinda hard to find a campaign that has a lot of combat, people don't rlly like that ig
People generally like a game to feel balanced but many seem to involve a lot of combat.

Welcome! If you're looking for a refresher on the rules, the best place is the free Basic Rules linked above. You can stop by here and ask us specific questions if you have any while you're reading.
D&D is a very combat orientated system so games naturally gravitate towards having more combat than RP.
I think it really depends on your definition of "a lot of combat." I personally DM an extremely role play heavy campaign, but that's mostly because it takes place in a city so the party aren't being attack by random monsters in the forest and such. So from my perspective, having 1 combat encounter every 2-3 sessions is a lot. But other people may expect combat to take place every session, and only have a session off from combat every once in a while
IMO you should have at least 2 combats a session
That's quite a lot, even for me.
But, one way or another, it'll depend on your table.
Maybe if you're doing an intense dungeon crawl type of campaign that could work, but I wouldn't call that the norm by any means
Every table is different. There is no correct number of combat encounters per session
Combats also just take a long time to actually finish. Assuming its a medium or hard difficulty encounter, I'd consider it lucky if you cold finish the encounter in under an hour. So doing that twice in a single session does not give you much time to actually progress the story or role play with each other.
Yeah and that's what I was thinking
i usually have one, but most of my sessions are also not very long
I am doing a 5th level one-shot, how many of what level, spells do i get in my spellbook? as a wizard, im new to wizards lol
you should have 14 spells in your spellbook at level 5
Unfortunately, wizard is probably the most complicated class to do a higher level start.
We can talk over the exact process of assigning your spells over in #character-discussion if you'd like.
I was too learning how to play as a Wizard...and stopped midway...
Im picking one class and learn atleast 2-3 subclass in a few days...
maybe il just play a druid lol, any subclass suggestions?
For Druid? If you're looking for that spellcasting vibe, Land is the most versatile.
if you want to wild shape more, choose moon
Circle of the Land is a good starting subclass for a newcomer, yeah. Though I will say, druids are also a very complicated class. Wizard, Druid, and Artificer are the 3 most complicated ones IMO. For druids, the complexity comes from wild shape. You have to keep track of what stat blocks you can transform into, and there are very special rules you need to follow while transformed. If you play a subclass that does not use wild shape, or at least uses it very rarely (like Wildfire or Stars) that could help make it feel simpler
What is the simplest Artificer?
none of them..
i assume you mean subclass?
The simplest Artificer subclass? Probably Armorer.
if yes, armorer
The complexity of artificer does not come from its subclasses, so they're all about the same
idk why i said artificer
Hello everyone, im COMPLETELY new tò DND, have always been interested in it but never found the chance (or the right friends) tò explore It more. I would love tò do some runs with anyones, i think im interested in the sorcerer (i got told i can shoot black holes with It) and cleric as i always main healers and buffers in most games i played, hope ill get hit up by yall
I dunno, keeping track of your Turret or Steel Defender adds a nontrivial degree of complexity
I was learning about Artilarist the other day...
#find-a-game , dont advertise for games here
Except for somany infusions at later level...
Oh, alrighty thank you
I'll temper your expectations a bit, in that no class can 'shoot black holes' until the highest levels of the game (and even then, it's a fairly rare spell that isn't available for most builds)
i'd just let them go for a moment, let the DM ground them
You're not wrong, but there are so many other classes and subclasses that ask you to keep track of another creature/object, so I consider that a pretty baseline mechanic at this point. But I guess it does put a bit of extra burden on the player
That's fair. I'm still looking at this from a newcomer perspective, though
Colossus, can I talk about a homebrew mechanic I thought of in dm? (Artificer related)
I'd prefer not to use DMs. But you can post it in the homebrew channel of this server if you like
Hey Ethel, if you want to play a support character maybe consider a Bard. They are very good at that and quite versatile.
Yes please
I will keep that in mind thank you very much, still not sure where is theright place tò resend the msg 😮

Once a character is stabilized (from a healers kit) what can that character do?
Not much!
A Stable creature doesn’t make Death Saving Throws even though it has 0 Hit Points, but it still has the Unconscious condition. If the creature takes damage, it stops being Stable and starts making Death Saving Throws again. A Stable creature that isn’t healed regains 1 Hit Point after 1d4 hours.

Sorry if covered before. I'm restarting playing and have the 3 new 2024 rule books. A player really wants to be a tabaxi. Do I need to buy the monsters of the multi verse or are the Tabaxi rules anywhere online I can view it download? Id prefer that to buying a whole extra book (but will if needs be) thanks!
That book is not legally available for free and DDB no longer allows purchasing individual species.
You could ask the player if they're willing to buy it, since they're the one who wants to play it. Or homebrew something.
Thanks, appreciate that.
TBH it's reduced on Amazon so I may just comit
Any overview of what else is covered in the book is it monsters too?
It has a handful of player species and the rest is monsters iirc.
So it's not a bad resource if you like to build your own encounters. Though they are the old style of statblocks
Ah I thought it was 2024 aligned

Wizard
Study arcane magic and master spells for every purpose
Wizards are defined by their exhaustive study of magic’s inner workings. They cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, and spectacular transformations. Their magic conjures monsters from other planes of existence, glimpses the future, or forms protective barriers. Their mightiest spells change one substance into another, call meteors from the sky, or open portals to other worlds.

What app should I use to make a character sheet
generally dndbeyond. i'd suggest making one by hand using the rulebook and a fillable pdf (or paper)
going through step by step really helps to understand where the numbers come from instead of just clicking buttons and ending up with something that works, but you don't really know how or why it works
the options are limited for free, to be honest.
Ok
if you make a character by hand you can borrow someone's book. often libraries have D&D books to check out.
I can’t make them by hand that’s why I’m trying to find an app
And I’m looking for a group
For 2024 edition:
DNDBeyond - official builder from the devs of D&D
Roll20 - use this if you were planing on using that site as an online tabletop environment
A good one I like for 2014 edition is Aurora too - though that’s Windows only (others work on a lot of platforms)
read through chapter 1 and 2 of the basic rules on the dndbeyond site. you have to make a character through the webpage.
oh. that's what's going on. the dndbeyond app can't make a character, you need to do that on the webpage. but you can see it and access it in the app after.
I did that
Oh damn could’ve sworn a few of the players I played with had it up on their tablet, guessing I assumed wrong 😭
you can access the character on the app after it has been made
The app didn’t work for my device
oh. then try just using the webpage
at some point i should learn the command to bring up the looking for group instructions
there are channels on here to look for groups
Ok
there we go
Ok thanks
SHARD is a VTT that has D&D character creation. some content is free, but most of it needs to be bought, just like any VTT.
you can still check out the free stuff
many other character sheet apps really aren't supported or endorsed. even if we really like them and find them really useful.
It doesn’t show up
there is a character sheet from More Purple More Better, you have to buy it but it has so much stuff integrated into it.
Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason you can't make a sheet by hand?
Since this is the official d&d site, anything we can recommend is going to have same free content by default.
and if you are struggling to open and use common websites, there maybe an issue with the settings on your device that prevent you from usin them?
No
I found an app
nice. don't tell us what it is
Why
If it has more than the default free content for free then it's piracy and we can't discuss it here per server rules
Hello
You can probably say the name. To confirm one way or the other
There are perfectly legal apps with the standard free content
So it just depends on what it has
To confirm if it’s able to be typed in chat???
To confirm whether it's an app we can discuss or not. If not, that'll be the end of it
And the mods may clean up those messages later.
Without knowing what it is or the content it has, we can't tell you if it's fine to talk about.
The logo is
A whit dragon wrapped around a multi colored d20 dice with a black back round
Do you know the app
Sorry, I don't actually know app logos
Ah
The best I can tell you is that if it only has the default free options for free, then it should be fine
It timed me out for a minute whenever I tried to send it
Running Lost Mines for a few buddies thru Discord. Is it difficult to play a character AND DM? They’re a group of 3, I want to play but also feels like it would help for the group to be four instead of three for combat. Super new to dnd, by the way.
Just say the name
Don’t do this, you will have to fight against yourself and it will be less fun
It's not recommended to play an actual character and DM. Though you could have friendly NPCs.
I did
I’m hesitant for this reason. I just want to banter with them.
That’s what NPCs are for
If you're getting timed out for saying it, assume it's not fine to discuss
Yep. Limited helpful NPCs can also be good to bolster a smaller party without skewing the balance like a full DMPC could
Plus banter 😁
Appreciate the feedback!
One more question, what’s a good way to handle player disputes? I’ve had them roll one time and then another time just decided “if he doesn’t want to give your character a potion, he doesn’t have to. You won’t convince him.” But then also had them roll a time when a player convinced another player to not grab supplies from a wagon that didn’t belong to them.
you can run a sidekick. rules for that are in Tasha's or the Essentials Kit rulebook. basically, a low CR stat block that has a few very specific additions. as a group the party decides what the sidekick does on its initiative order, and if the sidekick does anything outside of combat. but the DM roleplays the character for talking and stuff like that.
For PCs, just have them talk. No rolls.
also be sure its just the PCs having a dispute, not the players.
I really like this idea!
Yeah so far so good with the disputes, they’re out of the players trying to roleplay their PCs. Hope it stays that way.
encourage players that have disputes with each other out of character to do that out of character. using a PC as proxy for that sort of thing tends to end poorly. sometimes even to the point of showing up on CritCrab.
as for the Essentials Kit rulebook, WotC still has the pdf up for free. its just not so easy to access anymore. it used to be on their educator resources. however, since it was 2014 rules and they'll be updating the educator resourced to 2024, its no longer on the educator resources page.
If they're in character disputes, I generally leave it up to the players how they want to resolve it. Either by talking to each other, or rolling if they prefer. I'll sometimes roll to see if I notice another character lying to me or not, for example, even though I as the player definitely knows they're lying.
I’ll see if I can find it they WoTC. Although I’ve been wanting to buy Tasha’s book (among other books.)
tasha's has more in it about sidekicks. the essentials kit only has one type of warrior and one type of spellcaster. Tasha's has an offensive warrior and defensive warrior, and the spellcaster sidekick can come in three varieties.
there's also an expert sidekick, which either way has just the one variety.
good news is that the party can decide to swap out one sidekick for another when it makes logical sense. like they can head into the tavern or inn or wherever and park their hired expert sidekick and then hire a warrior defensive or spellcaster healer since they will be going up against a lot of fighting.
Yeah my players chose the two human fighters and the dwarf from the module, they don’t have a spellcaster in the party and were barely in the hideout. It’s evident they’ll need a spellcaster, I think.

Thank You!
Hai,hellos im new to dnd can i get any assistance on what to do, i got some tips from my friend but im not sure on where i can join a campaign or what to use for character wise
Hello. Not new to DnD. Just looking for a place! 🙂 looking around and exploring right now.
holle I am new on DnD looking to lear and stard don't have experience or material
Honestly, the thing that is stopping me from playing online dnd with people is i love the idea of playing dnd rather than playin. I have never even looked at rules.
Welcome everyone!
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
i should have made my wording better. i have looked at rules. it was very boring and didnt interest me. so i opted to playing single player dnd video games like bg and neverwinter nights. In real game this will make dm and players annoyed. i dont dont want them to waste their time on me. I do like role playing aspect of the game. A lot. however, combat aspect.
I Need help
Whatever I do it won’t let me type in looking for dm
And I need a group to start off because I just started dnd today
Correct - type in a channel you can type in like here /looking-for
Select one of the channel options that will pop up
Bot will give you a form to fill out, fill it out and submit.
Bot posts in the appropriate channel and attaches a thread to the LFG post.
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explains this process.
Ok thank you for your help
I’m confused
How will I know if a dm response to my looking for dm post
???
Hello???
They'll reach out to you or respond to it
How will they reach out will they dm me???
Up to them. They might DM you. THey might reply to your post
I wouldn't expect an immediate reply regardless
Oh ok thank you
Hello?
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
I'm just new to DnD, so i don't know much
Would you like to know more?
yes
If yes, I’d recommend to go to #learn-to-play to get started. Look through the free rules (I’ll link it below, but it’s there), make a practice character and familiarise enough to be able to effectively play a game. After that, look at #find-a-game to find a game.
For making characters, https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character will help. You can also go to specifically #character-discussion for help, tell them you’re new and they’ll be patient (hopefully). Learn the rules first tho.
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Be warned, it’s a lot of reading
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And of course, if you have any specific questions, please ask away! This channel is meant for it, and there are plenty of great people who should be willing to help you.
^
Everything I said above applies to any newcomer, so if you have the same question as Eagle these are my recommended steps.
Hi there Sleepy Star. What kind of help do you need? DM me if you like.

hello im new to dnd
Hi new to dnd, how can I help you?
well everything i tried it once but that was just making characters i dont know how to help or anything
so idk
Hello I'm relatively new and I have a character idea based off a fictional character but I am not good at character creation. I guess I was just wondering if there was someone who's Interested in helping me make said character? I hope I'm in the right channel for this-
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
If you’re a beginner, and you got a dnd question, you’re in the right place!
Also I can help, send that in #character-discussion and we’ll see. Though, I usually don’t recommend new players copy a fictional character cuz it removes the need for their own creativity.
Thank you! I've made a couple of my own characters and even played through a campaign, I just wanna play as this one character.
Well that’s fair then!
I'm new to D&D, joined in my friends' campaign which is already at level 8, 2 of us already got recked in first round of combat (the fighter and the paladin) would running the hell out of there be a valid response 😅
Anyone down? Can you outrun them? Can you get to shelter safely? Will fleeing result in calamity, and staying may prevent that?
If the answer to the above questions is yes, then feel free to run for your life. Not every battle has to be fought.
Fighter is on death saves, Paladin isn't far away from being that way too 😅 Was just exploring the underdark and thought this cavern looked interesting, and then a Behir pops out the water 😅 This is also shortly after fighting a group of Drow so spells are abit lacking 😂
Yeah dip. Go. The DM either has something valuable there, or doesn’t want you there. Both involve getting out and considering your options.
Exactly what I was thinking 😅
Once I buy the players hand book what is the first section I should read that isn't making me character
The Introduction and Chapter 1 😄
Aside from those, you really only need the rest once it comes up. For example, there is no need to read all of the spells if your character doesn't cast any.
Which version of the players handbook did you buy?
Planing on getting 5e
A lot of spells are filler anyways
2014 or 2024
Both are 5e
What the difference
A decade
Like diffrent spells or what
Its a general update/rebalance to 2014
2024 is where the game is and going. Generally a more polished D&D 5th edition
Oh ok. What is the standard that most dm use currently
Whatever the specific DM prefers, really 😛
I think people are divided into 2014 or 2024
It’s not that divided but some folks do have strong opinions
2014 has more overall content when it comes to races and subclasses etc but 2024 is more updated and balances some weaker classes pretty well
If I get 2024 will I need to go back and get 2014 if my dm want it
2024 is forward compatible - meaning you can use 2014 materials with 2024 materials without much issue
So witch one do yiu suggest getting
I’d go with 2024 personally as again that’s where D&D is going and future content will be based on it for the foreseeable future
Ok thanks Also can dm just say no to a character
You can play with just the free rules (there is also a 2014 free rules on DnDBeyond)
Yes
DM is the arbiter of rules, and rule 0 is the DM can do anything, so yes, they can say no to your character, either because it doesn't fit the campaign, or if it has other issues they do not accept
I mostly know the rules it is more for deep understanding off sub classes feats and other things like that
Yes, if the character doesn’t fit their world or the tone of the game or has things that the DM bans. Communication is key. A good DM will work with you until your character is in a place you are both happy with
Ok
Yeah, a good DM will actually mention any banned races or what they will not accept ahead of time
I had DMs kick/ban me from the start
Anything goes its not single player after all
Honestly at that point it's a bullet dodged
Hello. I've played dnd in the past, but not really a lot. Wanna get more into it, maybe. I like playing a sorc. I'm very much a newb. ❤️

Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.

We don't actually play games on this server. Games are usually hosted on separate servers. We allow people to advertise here though, as a group finding hub. You can find out more on how to do that in #find-a-game.
As for this question, not necessarily. It's usually recommended to get a grasp of the basic rules before you join in a game. It'd be a bit rude to put the responsibility of teaching you the game on the DM and all the other players in the middle of a session, after all.

Hello! 🙂
Hello 👋 there
Guys, I've never DMed or played DnD in My life, but I want to DM to play with my friends, so I wanted advice from experienced DMs to know:
Do I need to be the DnD rules and informations king to be a DM?The master of calculation?
When do I improvise and how
When the players just decide to not follow the plot what can I do?
I still didn't read the book of the Dungeon Master and the Manual of Monsters, but I will after actually understand the DnD Character Sheet.
Welcome, welcome! We can certainly help with some advice. Here in this channel, we can help with advice on the basics, but if you're looking for DM specific advice, we have #dm-discussion .
Thank you!
Read the free Basic Rules, both the player and the DM sections are applicable to you.
Then look for a one shot or short module to run for your friends. Good luck!
I wanna do a sorcerer dragonborne that acts like a cowboy, sorcerer so I can shoot eldritch blast with finger guns. Are there any other races I should play or classes I should multiclass in?
Not really. I say go full warlock to get the most amounts of Eldritch blast
Okie dokie I appreciate it
Anyone quickly need a player? I'm free for 6 hours from now! I'm a noob.
dont advertise for games here
also btw, dnd games dont normally just start that quickly
It's not uncommon to expect a few days or even a week+ of preparation once you find a group.
Could try the pick-up game section in Roll20.
how do you request a game as a new person, Im so confused
#find-a-game has all the steps on how to get searching here on the server.

hello! this may be a silly question so bear with me. i have been getting really into dnd lately and ive never actually played before but one day want to. what's a good class to do as a beginner?
the class that is the most appealing to you after you read their description
basically any, if you start at low level
If you're looking for simplicity, then Fighter, Rogue, Barbarian, or Monk are the most straightforward to learn. This is because they don't have spells by default.
thank you!
I want to start as an DM so could you give me some tipps?

welp, i keep forgetting, ill just give up on that
-# It's just dmtips
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
I joined a D&D club at school

The links above, and try Googling something like "d&d character sheet explained".
btw, you dont need to know all the rules
only what your character can do
The first couple of chapters in the Free Rules are a good start. That, and taking a go at how putting a character together works in practice.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
These, plus maybe short and long rests, is the amount I’d say you should learn before your first game

For future reference #character-discussion might help you get more input, also gimme a sec to read.
oki thanks
Then please read #channel-guide and the server rules
Yup everything there seems to be aligned with the rules
Apart from a few small issues
Number 1: You need to select more spells
?
wait i can do that
yes
Number 2: What’s your vision with this character? They have 10 constitution and therefore will struggle to front line or concentrate on spells
Are you wanting them to wear heavy armour and ward off attacks, or be a swifter martial-esque wizard?
uh idk i wanted to be a cool like forgotten prince who can use physical fighting and magic
Because having 15 strength and 14 Dex is trying to achieve two different things at once
i awnted to be like hella versatile
that doesnt actually work
:(
you will just be not very good at everything
You can be more versatile by putting your stats elsewhere.
Or playing a rogue. Or a bard. Fighters aren’t meant to be versatile.
Wizards are pretty versatile in the sense they got a lot of spells that could be good for different occasions
ohh i see yea makes sense
yea i just like wizards TwT
Someone who’s class is “fighter” isn’t great at much apart from, well, “fighting”
