Welcome! I’d definitely check this channels pins as well as #learn-to-play for a bunch of newbie resources !
I recommend reading through the Basic Rules (linked in both places) at your own pace and take a crack at making a character for practice
Also feel free to ask any more specific questions here :)
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

Hm…iirc there is skill point and stuff right? What is the usual at the start
Use either point buy or standard array
Probably standard array
I concur. You can find what each of these mean here:

Was trying to find the link, thanks

Hello Quick question what's the most popular/ what you would call standard version of D&D?
5e, the current edition
Thank you🙏
Ok so after reading this im a bit confused but ig I understand the important part
Thanks
Good to hear! If we can help clarify something, let us know.
Hello! Im having some trouble making my character for a new campaign - We are starting level 3, I want to be a half elf (drow) fighter (arcane archer) and I really dont know what Im meant to do, becuase ive used dnd beyond - which doesnt have arcane archer and i dont really know how to properly build a character
does anybody have any advice?
You might not have Arcane Archer on D&D Beyond. You’d need to buy Xanather’s Guide to Everything there to get the subclass.
If your GM uses Beyond, ask them if they own XGE. If they do, they can share the content with you
DnD can be played on discord right?
Yes.
Yes
my Gm doesnt actually like dnd beyond because of all the paywall stuff haha, I only used it for a foundation (considerd using BG3 to build it haha)
A lot of people begrudge buying stuff on DDB, because they tend to think buying the physical book should give them access TBF. Its an entitlement issue.
5e is the most used
In 5e there are 2014 rules that are considered "legacy options" and 2024 rules which are the newest ones
Alot of people don't like the 2024 ones so they just play 2014
The 2024 rules are also made to be backwards compatible
Based, Ngl.
If you don’t want to use Beyond but want the convenience of digital, you can download a PDF character sheet and fill that in.
It's not possible. BG3 isn't D&D
please guys i just wanna play
You can use it for inspiration though
it needs time and weeks i wanna play right now
That ain’t gonna happen
That's almost impossible. Remember that you'll be playing with other humans
D&D needs a good bit of co-ordination to set up.
Planning a campaign and recruiting the right players take time
And then actually getting them all together at the same time is another story.
yo i saw someone who literally played it with random people and it was fun
even on an anime server
Thats an option but not the norm.
You would still need to find those randoms to play and #looking-for-players is still your best bet.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players
But there are other places, to look, cast a wide net if your inpatient.
preparations took only 10 minutes not days
Again, not the norm
how can i do that
Just screening players takes days
Game stores, other Discord servers, campus TRPG clubs, etc
alright
So the key to play a dnd game is being patient? Ig I can work with that
The key is to be a person that other people would want to game with
i got that I'll post this on Facebook > Hey folks!
Tired of waiting days or even a whole week just to play D&D once?
I got you covered.
I’m looking for players who want fast, short, and fun D&D sessions — like 10–15 minutes max.
No long setups, no schedules, just quick adventures whenever we’re online.
If that sounds like your kind of chaos, drop a comment or DM me and let’s roll some dice! 🎲🔥
what do you think
Wow 10 minute sessions? Sign me the f up
Fair enough
Tho being patient for a game where you can play is a key part too
Yup
hold on I'll fix that
You want to play 10 min sessions of D&D?
Hm…10-15 abit short dont you think? Maybe 45-1h to give it more time to play
Like 10-15 minutes isnt worth it
I love it when people who clearly don't know much about TRPGs tell us how it's done
Oh mb
Im just thinking of a suggestion
This is the newcomer channel, so a certain level of not knowing is too be expected.
I wasn't referring to you, you're cool
Tbh my schedule is a bit busy so I kinda appreciate stuff from 1-2h
But 10-15 minutes abit short
okay here is the new Enhanced version post Hey folks!
Tired of waiting days or even a whole week just to play D&D once?
Well, I got you covered.
I’m building a group where setup takes only about 10 minutes — no endless prep, no boring waits.
We jump in, get ready fast, and start the adventure right away.
If that sounds like your kind of fun, drop a comment or DM me and let’s roll some dice! 🎲🔥
Nothing gonna work out unless it is a pvp or smth
hi im new to dnd and i found out there are two handbooks for e5 and i dont know which one to start with
Start with the free Basic Rules
You don't need to buy anything if you're absolutely new.
cam you send me a link ?
thank you
This is helpful, thanks
You're welcome, check out #find-a-game as well
Will do!
Hm…how about we help each other and find people to play. I kinda also want to play dnd but only have 1-2 hour to spare for it…
Maybe 1-2 hour abit too long to your likings but I think that the minimum amount of time for people to somewhat enjoy it
How long is an average oneshot?
Depends. Usually it's 4-5
So a 1-2 hour one is kinda hard to find right?
Really? Ig I have to be patient then
That depends on which group you are playing in
Some people use the 2014 phb (which is called the legacy rules on dnd beyond) and some use the more recent 2024 phb
Also u can play the game without it but I would recommend getting the book if u think your going to play it long term (also, get the digital version cus it's cheaper)
Though, as a digital D&D-er, I absolutely love having the physical books to guide new players. The page layout is very thought out and the labeled character sheet reference is a handy visual to have when going through the Creating a Character guide.
(Talking about the 2024 book that is. The 2014 book is much less intuitive in my opinion.)
-# (Not to mention that the newer one will be more widely accepted both by players and the company)
I buy all the physical books but we never use them in play. It's always the VTT and Beyond digital versions
Hello I’m new to dnd and I love the concept I’ve just never learned how to play and I’m looking for someone to help show me the ropes
Welcome! I'd check the pins in this channel first for a good starting place. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

hey and welcome, check out these links for beginners
Oh! Thank you very much!
Whats the difference between a lightfoot and a stout halfling?
I am going to DM for my first time to inexperienced players
Any free pre made adventure i can use lvl 1
Are you playing 2024 or 2014?
Are you using the 2014 rules? There’s only one type of halfling in the 2024 rules
Ahh okay
Im new so just learning about the app really
Which class would you guys recommend for a new player?
The martials (fighter, rogue, barbarian) have the fewest mechanics, but you should play whatever seems like the most fun!
Ye i made it on 2014
Ok. Most games use the 2024 rules, but there are still a few which use the old ones
Okay!
Any class. Whichever class looks cool to you
Ah ok thanks
I did a halfling cleric bc seems fun
why not let's do it
Ehehe
Tho… do you know how to be a DM?
If not then one of us need to learn how to be one
Hi, let's move game solicitation and planning to PMs
Or create a listing at #looking-for-dm
Ah mb
But ok
I would luv to join
Hey folks! Please remember it's off-topic to solicit/organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels:
#looking-for-dm
#looking-for-players
#looking-for-community
#paid-looking-for-game
Please read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use those channels and also helpful tips on how to find a game.
Is what I posted in #dnd-advertisements okay?
For server questions, best to check in at #moderator-support and ask to speak with a mod. But yes, what you posted, as long as it's D&D related, is fine.
you pay for looking for game? #paid-looking-for-game
Adverts in that section are for DMs providing a paid service. Posts in the other areas are for free games.
only in that channel
The thing I don't like about sorcerers is having to choose the spells I know, when I can't ever change them 😭😂
With so many options
Welcome!
I wanna play and learn
Hiiii
I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
I also want to play d&d 3.5 btw does it matter ?
Yes actually, 3.5e is an entirely different edition. The Basic Rules only apply to 5e
You'll want to ask in #dnd-elder-editions for help with newbie resources specifically for that edition
That was a big criticism of 2014 Sorcerers. If you're playing 2024 then thankfully Sorcs got a big buff in terms of spells known
Welcome to the official D&D Discord server!
hello. no need to be scared
I’m still scared I’ve never done this before
At any minute people will throw tomatoes at me
We were all new once upon a time
this a friendly place for you to ask your questions
nope just soft fluffy stuffed animals
Well .. that’s nice but uh my oomf told me to find a gammmmme …?? Idk what he talkin bout

This is so overwhelming
How do I look for a dm?
My friends and I are wanting to play but don’t have anyone to dm.
If it’s overwhelming, then I’d say just take one step at a time
The bot above has a channel for that
Yeah don’t do that till you learn the rules
Oka
You don’t jump into a pool without learning to swim, same here
#learn-to-play is a decent place to start, the Free Rules there can help
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And if you need help, feel free to ask! No matter how stupid you think the question is, we’ve seen stupider.
hellooo, i decided to join this server so i could look for campaigns to join online since my fav dms wont be going to my d&d club at my school bc they graduated =( i feel like i know the basics but it sometimes still confuses me too LOL anyways hope everyone is doing amazing here
I’m good I’m good. Have you looked at #find-a-game yet?

will do!👍
hey dudes! i need some help… i have 0 clue how combat works.
can someone break it down and explain it to me as if i’m 5
please
The party runs into a group of enemies.
The DM asks the players to roll initiative (while the DM rolls initiative for the enemy creatures).
The players roll a d20 and add their dexterity modifier (and any other bonuses that apply).
DM takes those rolls and creates an initiative order to track things.
On the character's turn in initiative order they can Move, take an Action, and take a Bonus Action (if they have any). Movement can be broken up between taking an Action.
One kind of Action is the Attack Action.
So let's say you're a fighter and you have a longsword. On your turn in combat, you move up towards an enemy and make an attack action.
You roll a D20 and add your strength modifier and proficiency bonus to the roll. If you meet or beat the target's Armor Class, you hit!
If you roll a natural 1, you miss regardless of any bonuses and modifiers.
If you roll a natural 20, you automatically hit regardless of the target's armor class - this is known as a critical hit and you can roll the damage dice twice and add them all up.
So you've hit that target - your attack should list what damage it does. A longsowrd can do a d8 or d10 of damage depending on whether you're holding it in one hand or using two hands. In this case let's say you're using it one handed.
The DM says you've hit the target, please roll damage. You roll 1d8 + modifiers and that's the damage you do to the creature. The DM tracks the dmaage done to the enemy and once the enemy hits 0 HP, it's defeated.
let me just say rq you’re a life saver
Each creature takes it's turn in the initiative order until enemies are defeated or some other ending occurs
And that's combat in a nutshell
You can read more about the rythem of play here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Do you guys have any example of a filled out character sheet? I just want to make sure of smth
There's some preset characters you can check on DnDBeyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Ah ok thanks
Hey, I’m filling up my first character sheet ever, I’m kinda lost. May I have some help. (I don’t mind calling to make it easier cuz I have a lot of questions)
I can help, but please put your questions here
I’m not comfortable sharing my voice
And if u put it here you can get input from everyone
Ofc no problem
Also that’s an… interesting server tag
Well, Im trying to figure out how the sheets work. The character is an owlin rogue.
Aight
Lmaoooo shhhhh
U using dnd beyond?
Hello
Yes
Proficiency Bonus is a number added to a d20 Test if you have proficiency in the relevant thing you’re rolling the test for. For example with skill checks, a kind of d20 test, you would add your PB if you were proficient in the given skill
A bonus to some checks that increases over time
You would go to #dnd-elder-editions
So for now I would put zero?
At level 1 it’s +2
No, your PB begins at 2 and increases every 4 levels
Alright
Also, about like intelligence, strength,…. It’s base what ?
Is there anywhere you can create odd characters online? Like cross class playable monster races?
@hearty blaze @wheat crystal
8
Those are your stats, of which their default value is dependent on what method you use to generate your ability scores
For newbies we recommend standard array or point buy
Lemme grab the link to them real quick
Not sure what you mean. If you mean custom species outside of the official rules that would be homebrew
I was wondering how much knowledge I should know before jumping into a session
Alright, I also checked my class species and it’s telling me to add 2 to one ability and add 1 to an other. Is there a place that I should write the two I decided to increase or I just add it to my score ?
Basic rules are good to know, and how to make your character
Like if you know what to do to attack, or make a skill check or save, honestly you're mostly there, since when you need to do something it's either gonna be the DM telling you to do it, like "Give me an Athletics check", or in combat knowing what your character can do
I’m also lost with (by example) if you go see your strength score there’s “modifier" and "score" what’s the difference?
Sorry disappeared for a bit
Your modifier is added to your roll, and score determines what the modifier is
Dw
Your strength score is how much strength you have, and your modifier is based on your score and determines how much the roll is modified
The formula for it is (Score-10)/2
For example, if you have 14 strength (that’s your score) it would have a +2 modifier.
So if you rolled an 11 you’d get a 13.
Ohh
Double checking, you playing on 2014 or 2024 rules?
What’s a skill save?
There's no skill saves. There's Skill Checks, and there's Saves
Some acts committed against you require a saving throw, like dodging a fireball or resisting mental offence
Ohhh gotcha, ty
I have no idea. I haven’t joined a group for now
I’m assuming 2024 cuz it’s dnd beyond, aight?
Ig so yeah
Probably
What’s wisdom for ?
And what should i write at initiative
Your dexterity modifier
Spellcasters, or if you’re not one it’s for insight, perception and medicine
It’s a very good stat to have
That’s plenty
?*
Rogue
Yeah rogues do like having a decent wisdom, but it’s not a core stat they NEED.
When creating characters does the species chosen affect any stats or abilities? Or is it just primarily appearance based?
Each species have abilities that are specific to them, and they do affect stats if you’re playing 2014 rules
Alright
So 14 is plenty
And what if I don’t ?
Don’t what?
Then that’s very concerning because you’re a rogue,
How do you know that?
Because 15-10=5
5/2 is 2.5
Round down
+2
Waaa
Ha lol ive just memorised it
Wait so I messed up everything?
There’s a table for it somewhere
Another way to remember it if you dont remember the equation
Score of 10 is always a 0 modifier, and whenever you gain 2 to the score, the modifier increases by 1
So 12 = +1
14 = +2
16 = +3
I wouldn’t say that
This is a much easier way to remember it, I just have the math ingrained in my head
Is it only for dexterity?
Or I need to do that to every score
What are all your stats, we can help you with the modifiers now.
Every. Single. One.
Of the 6.
But just tell us your stats and I’ll convert them into modifiers
Strength 12, intelligence 12, dexterity 15, wisdom 14, constitution 13, charisma 8(I chose to add 2 for my species I can add 2 to one score and 1 to another (haven’t chosen that one for now tho))
Strength +1
Dex +2
Con +1
Int +1
Wisdom +2
Charisma -1
Also for every stats there’s things like "history" "nature"… what are those ?
So for charisma it’s +1 ? Since I add 2
Alright
All good dw
Strength +1
Dex +2
Con +1
Int +1
Wisdom +2
Charisma 0
I’d recommend putting your last slot in Dex
Yes
How about that ?
History is intelligence based
Basically, things like history and nature are “skills”
But like do I start with anything?
And your DM will make you roll for how effectively you do these skills
You should start off with some proficiencies
Which you add to your rolls regarding those skills
It should be under your background and class on dnd beyond
How do I choose them ?
Your class and background help determine your proficiencies
Oh
So it’s telling me that I can choose two
Then choose two
Should I write like a +1 to the one I chose ?
Hi.
Is a kitsune an official race in DnD beyond?-
No
Oh
Good morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup
Dnd beyond should do this for you
Wdym ?
Good evening! I’m looking to join a DnD group and either listen in to someone who’s looking for a new player or just looking for a game to listen to. I played a bit but ended my last campaign due to a bad break up with the DM
Just select your proficiencies, do your stats, and when you get the final character sheet it’ll be done
I’m not really sure where to look
If you’re looking to join a group, go to #find-a-game
I mean, I'm new to dnd
Oh no I’m filling up the sheets by myself
Hi new to dnd, I’m Nugget
Ah
I thought something was off
Anywho
Well I’m using the sheets the server gives
I’m half busy rn, so I can’t really sorry
Foxes do act like cats right?-
Somewhat, yes
Oh sorry
I’m not an animal expert tho
I should probably make a Tabaxi character then -,-
Could be fun
Hi Ive never played d&d before😭 so how does it usually go bc ive always wanted to play but never knew how
They act more like dogs from what I’ve seen. Very hyperactive
Mhm
You could just play a tabaxi and say they have multiple tails
Also what’s an origin feat?
Hello! Welcome. Check out #learn-to-play to get a grip on the rules, the free rules are somewhere there.
I do
Then put that for each skill, and add 2 to any skill you have proficiency in
That being the modifier, not the score
So it also add 2 to modifier ?
My Tabaxi Character might get confused like: "Do I act like a Cat or a dog???"
Yep
I am confused 😭
Ye
Now I chose a Tabaxi Race For my character, now it's time to figure out how to fill out my Character Sheet, on paper or digital -,-
For hit points now. What should I write at "current" "temp" and "max"
Hello new here, im hosting DnD as a DM , this is my first time playing and DMing i want to do a homebrew One Piece Themed play through but im not super sure how to lay out the foundation of it , if you are willing to help please msg me and ill show you what i have so far
Oh okay
I do want to be a DM, but I'll think about it, for now on I'm just a player :/
Ye
Sorry my internet cut out
You don’t need to be sorry dw
Have you read the free Basic Rules? If you already have and you still have questions, let us know.
Will it be weird if I try to fill in a character sheet then send it here so you guys can help me fix it?
You can do that in #character-discussion
Ah mb then
But thanks for the redirection
would you mind sending a link
Hello
Hellllloooowwwww lovely people!! My name's Sascha and I'm a complete noob who has nver played DnD in my life
I know some of the rules, but I'm looking for a place where I can learn more and learn how to play
Hi there! I'm a 13 yr old boy and uhh I go by TherealBTVR but you can call me BT! I have absolutely no knowledge on dnd I just know it's absolutely cool!
You can learn more about D&D here #learn-to-play
Once you're ready to find a group, check out #find-a-game #looking-for-players
can someone just tell me when and why would someone loose hit points
You lose HP when you take damage
Hey I’m looking for a beginner friendly group of people to play with
Check out #find-a-game #looking-for-players
when you take damage
the reason can be an attack, a trap, a poison, etc etc
Im abit confused with the fill in number part in the creating a character guide Can someone explain it to me?
Are you using dnd beyond or paper?
I’m assuming paper from your question, but wanted to double check
Paper
My phone cant download dnd beyond :0
“Saving Throws: For the saving throws you have proficiency in, add your Proficiency Bonus to the appropriate ability modifier and note the total. Some players also like to note the modifier for saving throws they’re not proficient in, which is just the relevant ability modifier.
Skills: For skills you have proficiency in, add your Proficiency Bonus to the ability modifier associated with that skill, and note the total. You might also wish to note the modifier for skills you’re not proficient in, which is just the relevant ability modifier.”
This part…
Ah
Yeah this often confuses newer players that don’t use DnD beyond
Ummm gimme a sec
What’s your stats?
And your class?
Saving throws are your stat modifiers plus proficiency bonus to two stats depending on the class
Skills are dependent on the stat modifiers and what skill proficiencies you have
Uh…can I sent my sheet rn to you. Idk how to say it… hope you dont mind…
That’s fine
But I might have to go soon, so make it quick
Hi, I'm CIPHER, and I'm totally new to the game. Been trying to get more into fantasy lately, and I wanted to do something that I could actively be involved in. Also, as an avid reader, it looks hella fun.

send the link in #character-discussion (and maybe ping me if you want me to review it quickly)
okay
when would yall say is a good or bad time to ask my dm to make a new character? in a local club I'm in I joined a new campaign midway (they've done 5 sessions, I joined on session 5) did the one session, a one-shot in the same world, and a co-game with a different gm but in the same canon and I have come to the conclusion that the rp idea I came up with for my character just doesn't mesh well with the setting or my class's kit very well lol, had a good idea but I'm just not good enough at rp to bridge that gap yet and I can't imagine I will be by the end of the campaign either
Feel like asking after one official session would be a bit weird but also prolonging it might make swapping harder if the dm ends up being good with that
Ask as early as you can. Come with some ideas, ask the DM if they can work them out with you for something that fits. If they're too busy to help between sessions perhaps one of your fellow players can lend a hand.
Anytime before or after a session (well, perhaps not hours before the next session) would be reasonable I think.
As a DM I wouldn't want to hear someone asking to change their character ten minutes before the session starts!
oh yeah it'd be a few days in advance for sure
on the bright side, due to it being a new group and also due to the aforementioned rp issue, I didn't do a lot during the first session, so shouldn't be a rough swap I'd hope
sucks that my DM put time and planning into tying the character into the plot but I feel like if the character doesnt fit it doesnt fit, and I'd just end up being a milquetoast addition to the table lol
ty for the advice o7
It's not optimal for sure, but as a DM I'd rather throw away some prep than have a player not have fun at the table. The latter is what we're here for, after all!
I am going to DM for my first time to inexperienced players
Any free pre made adventure i can use lvl 1
Peril in Pinebrook is a fine starter.
most here arent level 1 tho

You should learn to swim before jumping into the pool
I know theres a stigma behind it but I have watched quite a bit of critical role so I feel like I know enough to kinda figure out the rest on the fly. Do you guys recommend a book I should buy first or?
The Free Rules have plenty to get you started. Have a look at the first two chapters, try putting a character together for practice: class, species and background. Let us know what you come up with.
The Basic Rules is all you need and it's free. The player section is a short read as well.
where is this located, sorry
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
How did you set up your first online campaign? I know there's #1050209410460426281 but beyond that what resources are available to look for a group and see if they match what you are looking for?
all channels to search for games on this server are listed there

alr thx @lavish kayak
For hit points (in the sheets). What should I write at "current" "temp" and "max".
current is what you have atm, max is your max (at level 1 max of your hit die + con mod), temp you can get from certain abilities or spells
Thank you
This might help too: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-how-to-run-a-session-0-for-your-d-d-game
Wdym by what I have atm? And for temp how do I know if I start with some ?
Hit points are a measure of your life you have left. Max is determined by you class hit die, the die you roll each level to gain a new max + constitution modifier each level. So a fighter shows a hit die of d10. Let’s say his con modifier is +2. At level one his max is 10+2 (because you get the max on your hit die atlevel 1) then at level 2 he rolls that d10 and gets a 6 + 2 con modifier. So his max is 10+2+6+2 for a 20. His current hp is goes down from the 20 if he becomes injured. This can be healed back up to a 20 via many ways. Temp hp is usually given from spells or abilities which are a way to temporarily exceed your max/give you extra hp, but they don’t come back unless another spell or ability do it again
Alright thank you. Also I’m doing my proficiencies now. I’m trying to figure out how and what to do with it. Like where to write it. I have sleight of hand, stealth. So I should just add 2 to these one ?
Anything you’re proficient in will get you proficiency bonus (assuming level one character then +2) and the modifier from the skill the proficiency goes with. So those both would be 2 + your dexterity modifier
Thank you
What’s the difference between species traits and features?
Species features are granted by your species (human, orc, halfing, etc) while class features are granted by your class at certain levels
Traits are what we call flavour. They describe typical members of the species, like their general look.
Features are what we also call mechanics. They're little bits of rules that affect what your character can do in the game, like darkvision giving you an enhanced ability to see in the dark.
For myself o have dark vision because of my species. So I wrote it in species traits. For my features as a rogue there’s a bunch of things (If I understand it well) like for example expertise at lvl 1 sneak attack lvl 1 roguish archetype lvl 3 bla bla bla. So I should write all of that or just the lvl one features ?
Darkvision is a feature, not a trait
Just the level one features to start with.
Traits are your character’s appearance and stuff
Features are their mechanical effects
Ok so in the sheets there’s class feature and feature
So in the class one I write that
And in feature I write my species one ?
But there’s a place for appearances

Hai umm, how different is pathfinder 2e to the 5e and 5.5e? I have a semi understanding of 5e and 5.5e, but a game I'm joining soon is pathfinder 2e...how much different is it?
It’s a completely separate game from D&D.
The folks in #non-dnd-topics could tell you more about it.
There are some similiarities but Spam has the crack of it, There is a PF2e server that you might get more from.
Ah OK thanks
Alright, as an owlin, my background gives me a pet mouse as an equipment. That’s not really possible since the character is an owl. Is there a possibility to change the pet ?
That’s something you’d have to discuss with your DM.
But I’d imagine most DMs would be fine with it.
As long as you’re not trying to trade it for something crazy, like a velociraptor.
Being a human means that I can choose another origin feats right? Asking just to make sure
Yes
Lmaoo
Ok thanks
As a rogue, if i understand it well I don’t have any spellcasting abilities?
Not unless you choose the Arcane Trickster rogue subclass, no.
How do I know if I’m proficient for a weapon ?
Should I check my class of my species ?
You will have a feature that gives you weapon proficiency
Usually either a general one that applies to a category of weapons (e.g. martial weapons), or to a specific weapon (e.g. whips)
For rogue it’s written "at 1st lvl, choose two or your skill proficiencies, or one of your skill proficiencies and your proficiency with thieves tools. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of the chosen proficiencies"
Is that what you’re talking about ?
Btw I’m lost with that
hello!! :3
Are you familiar with what proficiency in a skill/weapon means?
Nope
Assuming you're using the most recent rules, you can see it in the Core Rogue Traits here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#CoreRogueTraits
See "weapon proficiencies"
When you are proficient in a skill or weapon, you add your proficiency bonus (+2 at level 1) when making attack rolls / skill checks.
Your class tells you what weapons you are proficient in, and your skills are based on class, origin, and species
Additionally, here’s the basic rules link on how proficiency works:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Proficiency
Thank you guys
Im very new to this how do I make a character?
Welcome! Have a look at this section of the basic rules. It walks you through character creation:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
If you have questions along the way, feel free to let us know.
Ok thank you
Alright i read about making a character whats next?
making it, finding a game, and the worst part: scheduling
That was fast! If you want you can try making a practice character, otherwise if you wanted to jump straight into finding a group you can check #find-a-game
I want to try and making a practice character how would I do that?
D&DBeyond has the Basic rules integrated
use a sheet/pdf, or a character creator like ddb
Into the character creator, that is
what if I cant download dnd beyond tho?
It exists as a website
there is also a web version
that imo works a lot better
Same here in my experience
ah ok thanks :3
I have made my character:3 is there anything else I need to do in order to play:3?
find a group!
say tho do you guys have any tips to find player using the same language? A DnD player in my country is pretty pretty rare
What you can download are the SRD and the character sheet:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/SRD_CC_v5.2.1.pdf
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
try using country-specific lfgs or just speak english
Agreed
You can also see if there are any local game stores or libraries in your area that host games

If you feel like you've got a good understanding of the Basic Rules, you can follow the link above to learn how to find games using this server.
fair enough. Still tho having someone with the same language can be fun. But thanks for the answer
Understood:3!
sadly nope. I have check every place I can go with my bike sadly. But thanks for the advice
My friend and I were hoping if we could join a campaign and start a new adventure with others
Any idea on where?
#looking-for-players is where people post game adverts.
Does anyone have any good bots for DND servers? It’s my first time as a DM and we’re doing it online!
-# please at me if you do
hey all! newcomer to dnd and making my first character. its a level 3 warlock and im choosing invocations (2014) im stuck between Misty visions or Tome of shadow secrets something or other. Rituals seem pretty good but making illusions just seems like fun.
also took agonizing blast cuz everyone says to
That kind of choice tends to come down to what you think is more fun/useful
If your party doesn't have another ritual caster, then the ritual book can be very useful for things like Detect Magic. If it does, it's less important.

I guess my next question would be, which rituals do I pick? Im assuming detect magic would be one
still, ones that seem cool. If you want the best choices #optimization would be better
can you clarify? i dont understand what this is saying
There is no dragon hunter class. However, if you play D&D enough, you likely will fight dragons eventually
the links above from the bot tell you how the game works. If you want to play a character that wants to hunt dragons, you can, though you need to work with your Dungeon Master to find out how much that will come up in the story
So, this is the server for the tabletop roleplaying game, not computer/mobile games.
Thanks
Oh
Some virtual tabletops for D&D can be used on your phone, but honestly most don't work very well. And you would still need a group of people to play.
Dungeons and dragons is a tabletop RPG. you can play it with pen and paper or with digital devices, but you need a group to play with typically.
If you want a D&D related computer game, there are some that have been put out over the years. But off the top of my head, I can't think of one that works on mobile.
not every online tool does work on phones, yeah
Like dnd beyond?
dnd beyond works on mobile. they have an app
on a tablet, you can even just use the regular website
Though do note that D&D Beyond is not a game in and of itself. It's a tool that helps with playing the tabletop game
Ah sorry, I was just trying to get a feel if any of them seemed good on paper but they're actually garbage
Oh 😞 but is dere a way to get DND In mobile?
again DnD is not a like a video game. Ive played with people who just used their phone, but it wont work for every "table"
D&D is an RPG that you play with actual people.
You need to find a group to play it.
DnD is not a game in the normal sense, its not something you download and start playing

Yeah a whole 10 seconds
Whoever called Dyno thanks but that might not help
ANYWHO
Dnd is a very reading focused game
Discord server bot
Well not focused, but you have to read a lot
Dyno is a server bot
Ok
You need reading...and some math
I am aware, but we can summon them too
But only some
And some role playing skills
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Also in my IRL campaign I already know most of the basics
I kinda find it better when you have 0 skills and you slowly just kinda get i to it untill you discover you're actually pretty good
I finished up to our first fight but they don't know how to do their bbg
Tru that, but I kinda meant that dnd involves a lot of role playing
So ability checks, character creation, combat, short and long rests and a basic understanding of at least one class’ features?
All but rests and I only really understand rouge
Then yeah you know enough to play a game, definitely
Having a good grasp of one class will set you up for success when you try another. The foundational pieces stay the same, it just adds some new stuff as you go.
short rests are rests that a party do for one hour, where they regain their hit dice (what it is depending on the class, and how many depending on the level). Each one restores 1 hit dice +con mod worth of health.
For example, a level 3 barbarian would have 3d12 as hit dice
Or a level 4 rogue would have 4d8
???
It seems I’ve confused you
Yes
Do you get this part?
Can we just do a simple campaign please I don't like the rest sustem
-# the rest system is part of a simple campaign
Ok
And you can use it to heal
Not a real life hour btw
K
An in game hour
I see
Important to specify, you do NOT need to wait an irl hour
Yeah 😂
K
I think the healing amount is what confused you
The hit dice
Generally if you use DND beyond it has your hit dice listed and will roll them for you
Can people do it in discord calls and use a online dice site to spin
So you know how each class has a different die that helps contribute to their health as they level up?
(D10 for fighters, d8 for rogues)
Yeah
Yes, typically people usually use DND beyond or roll20, both are digital platforms that host character sheets and will roll dice amounts for you automatically
K
Your hit dice is you’re level x that dice
What are you confused about?
The hit dice is very confusing
What about them? The dice amount or the type of dice?
(Amount is based on your level, and type of dice depending on your class)
Yes
Yes
1 example of a short rest may be after a skirmish, and the level 3 barbarian is badly hurt and wishes to spend all of his hit dice (3d12). He then heals 3d12 health + 3x his Constitution modifier.
Ok
He also could’ve healed 2d12 and saved a hit dice for later
Just a reminder, you heal the hit die plus your Con modifier (which you may have been leaving out for simplicity, but does matter in terms of total health regained)
I didn’t leave it out
^
You left it out of the hypothetical example, which is what I was reading 😉
Ah, nice catch
Hey guys
Good morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup! How can I help ya?
Just saying hi
Did you just change Pfp in those 3 minutes?
Yeah
How do I play ?
Oops I was in the wrong chat. What VTTs do you play on? Or does that differ
I've seen online that people make backup characters, so I'm wondering if there's a certain amount I should make??
I'm also aware some DMs don't allow Homebrewing (i think that's what it's called) so should I just make a character from one of the classes? Do i need to know much about a specific class??
For the rules I’ll direct you to #learn-to-play
To find a game I’ll direct you to #find-a-game
But learn the rules first
Differs table to table
Thank you
Okay, thank you very much
Hallloooo
I say if you want make 1 backup. I personally don’t make any.
hiiiiii!
oo okii
For the classes, yes make one from that. It’s a TON easier for the DM to consider and for you to get a table
And you should know the basic mechanics of your class, but start with just one that you like
okayy!! Tysm!!
I read the rules but don’t quite understand lfg faq
Do you know enough to play a game?
Rules wise
Def not
Then you don’t need to worry about looking for games yet
I think yes, I know the very basics
How to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat?
So should I make a character?
Yup
Kk Thanks
Make one for practice, and then make another one once you get a game. Unless your practice character fits and you like them.
It’s a good idea to practice making a character yes. Keep in mind it’s practice and may need to be refined or started over when u find a group
Modifiers I’m not so sure but the rest I know
Okay
I see
U might have to read into it a little, take your time with making a character is what I can tell you from experience
Unfortunately I have to go in approximately 30 seconds, so I can’t help you there. Others should be willing tho.
Alr Thanks ☺️
Don’t worry about it, thank you still
There are two modifiers, ability and proficiency
(One is stat based, the other is level based)
AIGHT GTG NOW
Yo can someone teach me how to like actually play dnd and like teach me abt the mechanics or direct me to something that will teach me
I learned and still learning by joining games but that’s hard to do in person without a friend group that plays but the handbooks help and watching shows that play it help to

Quick question
Are there any classes that let me be a rogue like assassin whilst letting me use mimics to make weapons or clothes and be like a mimic controller
Or can I make a home brew class for that
You would have to make a homebrew class to control mimics, but homebrewing is not recommended for newbies
Oh ok
Classes especially since they’re the hardest to design right
I have some experience just not rly official dnd campaigns
I would be shocked if any DM would allow that to be honest. That would get OP real quick
my bf gave me these stats and told me usually u get 20 starting points but looking it up it says 27??
Strength:
Intelligence:
Magic:
Stealth:
Perception:
Persuasion:
Agility:
Luck:
and ive seen diff stats before so im just trying to get clarification LOL
As a bridge you might like the concept of reflavoring; changing the narrative description of features without changing the mechanics. It’s technically DM-dependent but reflavors are significantly more likely to be approved compared to mechanical homebrew
It’s supposed to be 27
oh i seee
I don’t know where he got 20
It’s 27 but those are not D&D attributes, will not most of them
You could describe your spells as summoning a mimic to coat yourself (Mage Armor), send out mini mimics (Magic Missile) etc
Yeah, these aren’t for DND
I don’t know what game it is
Those are not D&D stats. The 6 stats are:
- Strength
- Dexterity
- Constitution
- Intelligence
- Wisdom
- Charisma
What if I made a system where I could find mimics and take them and I can upgrade them by giving them recourses and stuff. Also I js think having a mimic storage that only opens for me or sumn would be cool. And Mby I can try balancing it by starting with no mimics or smth.
Stealth, Perception, and Persuasion do exist in the game but as skills, not stats
ohh
thank you all 😭 🙏
Again mechanical homebrew is hard to balance and get approved, especially for a newer player. Can’t modify a car engine well if you don’t know how one works
Ya.
Thx for the help
Hmmm what if I made it kind of a subclass that I unlock at a certain level or mimic taming is like a skill I learn
Subclasses are easier to homebrew than full classes
There’s a lot of design paradigms that go into making a functional and well made subclass. You can shoot some ideas over in #homebrew but again I recommend familiarizing yourself with the base game before delving into modifying the system
I’d still suggest you don’t
Alright tysm again for the help
It would be much easier to just describe your spells as mimic themed
hey is anyone willing to let me join a game and teach me how to play? I've never played dnd before

Welcome!
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
okay thank you so much
what character types do you think are the easiest for beginners?
Some classes are more complex than others but none so much that a newbie couldn’t learn a class effectively.
In my experience it’s better to start with a class you find interesting to play
okay thank you so much
I agree. Whatever's most interesting is probably most worth it in the long run. Complex classes like the Druid, Monk, or Sorcerer might take some extra rules-tracking but your DM and fellow players should be able to help with that.
And if you need someone to simplify certain features for you or walk you through the rhythm of play for a certain class in combat (since that's where the rules come in most), you can always return to the server for advice.
okay thanks
Hey, so where can I go on here to find a group to play with
#find-a-game is a good channel to get started!
Thank you
so for ability scores what type of dice do i roll for each stat
The official rolling method is 4d6 drop lowest until you have an array of 6 numbers you can assign to whatever stat you want
For newbies however we recommend using Standard Array or Point Buy. Rolling is often only done under DM supervision to prevent cheating
oh okay
See here for the 3 official stat methods:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step3DetermineAbilityScores
if you dont mind me asking what's the difference between intelligence and wisdom?
sorry if im bothering ive just never done anything with dnd
The channel is for questions! Intelligence is more like knowledge of information. Wisdom is closer to intuition, knowing that is beyond facts.
Hey does anyone know how to make a looking for players post thing? I'm still kinda new to the server sorry if this is the wrong channel
Have you read #find-a-game?
Oh no I haven't thanks!
This section of the Basic Rules also goes over what each stat typically measures:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
so if im trying to make a character thats like not book smart but has like common sense i should put points in wisdom?
okay thanks
Any campaigns looking for players? I have a character ready to go

hello. i am new to dnd. if you are also new to dnd, this is, in my opinion, some good advice. lean into the cheesiness of the game. that is something i needed to hear. and i think some of you needed to as well
what is a cantrip spell?
A cantrip is a special type of spell, equivalent to a “0th-level spell.” They don’t require spell slots to cast
Though you still need to follow all the other spellcasting rules
So what does d_ mean for example I do 10d6 damage
D6 is the type of dice. 10d6 means you roll 10 6 sided (standard dice) dice
The twenty sided die is shortened to d20 for example. D4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and d100 are, I believe the standard seven dice used in the game
Often called the percentile die. Used for rolling things on a table usually or for things that have a percent chance to happen
A weapon attack or spell will tell you the damage for if it hits.
A fireball, for example is 8d6. You roll 8 of those six sided dice, add up the total and that is the damage the spell would do
oh
WOW that makes so much sense
Wait why’d that sound sarcastic
I think I just found a way to cheat dnd
But I don’t wanna get techy so yesh
I wouldnt try to cheat.. it spoils the fun and the rest of your group will most likely not be happy about it.
Best to just learn the game before trying to break it.
Trying to use something like weighted dice, for example, could lead to people asking you not to play with them any more
Yeah Ik
it also doesn’t involve like weighted die and stuff
it’s an old gambling trick if I’m correct
essentially u js cook ur die in the oven
Also I’m not a cheater so yeah I just thought of that for some reason idk
Cooking dice makes weighted dice. The whole purpose of cooking them is to melt the material slightly so the weight shifts onto the side opposite the desired value.
The problem with that is now all the monsters/players also have weighted die
And it’s cheating
yo so just joining the DnD community, never played it though I did play one session of Gloomhaven once. There any early pitfalls I should avoid? Also don't have a group I'm playing with yet either
Don't take away from the fun of the table, including the DM's fun. If you can manage that, you should be good for the most part.
New here, does anyone have any tips for non-AL PbP?
thanks. Only other question I have is what do you think about Roll 20 or some other online way of playing? I don't really have people I know that would play
A VTT like Roll20 can be nice, but I don't think it's strictly necessary.
What kinds of tips are you looking for?
Like a Roll20 style "join game" list where I don't have to import DnDBeyond characters into Roll20
i appreciate it
So I have no clue how dnd works but I want to learn, is there anyone willing to explain the game to me? No pressure if no one wants to

thats alot of words.
Thnx Dyno
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Very common response
i dont like words. they hurt my eyes
Then you’re gonna either learn to love them or get a text-to-voice thing
learn to love them it is
it could also just be thats it late
D&D like other RPGs is a game with rules. Fortunately, the player section of the Basic Rules NuggetN linked is very short
NOOOOOO RULES MY ARCH ENEMY
Every homebrew enjoyer ever /j
im sure i have most the rules down, its just im not sure waht i dont know.
Anything here?
Plus rests
You'll find out what you don't know by reading the document
uh yeah alot of that seems familiar
I’d read it again anyway so that you consolidate your knowledge
i am currently im just confused on one thing. d20 so the way we played in the homebrews is that a natural 20 no matter the challange to beat, is a success, by the looks of it does that only apply to attack rolls?
Only attacks
Only attack rolls and death saving throws have special effects on a roll of 20 or 1
Notably, not skill checks
ok good to know.
What other things did you change in homebrew?
i dont think there was a single thing we kept in it
At that point is that even dnd, if nothing is the same
uhhhhhhh good question
Also it seems like you kept skill checks
the only normal one i did was witha diffrent group where it was greek mythology and i think he only chnaged stuff like items and or eneimes i never got to fully dive into the mechinices sense it was cancled
guys, a small question, for someone who has never dm'ed before but played a few games, is there any oneshot/two shot module you'd recommend to try to get a little grip on things?
Lost Mine of Phandelver
Lost Mines of Phandelver
I am a newcomer , can I ask if to play this game online, do i need to buy anything physical?
No, but I recommend it
Rolling a physical dice is a lot more immersive than rolling a dice electronically, and a single set of dice isn’t that expensive.
And yes I’m mostly recommending dice
You can get just one set, but I run through them so fast I have plenty.
Also Hu Tao stop you can’t eat the lil dead one 😭
Then if I am playing online through voice channel, the DM will be streaming the map and the scenario? (I don't know the terms for it, I just saw a webtoon related to it and got interested XD)
But yummy
It’s called a Virtual Table top, or VTT (I think? Idk I don’t play online much)
But yes
Maybe not the scenario, but the map yes
Like, they won’t be able to show you a live tavern scene, but they might have a tavern map/photo
At least, I assume. Maybe I shouldn’t say much considering my validity as a source is questionable
Anyone please feel free to correct me
Has anyone played or ran a session using Grim Hollow? it looks really interesting being dark fantasy and all
Ah so that's how it works , I guess I can try it when I am free
Thanks for helping me understand more about this community!
No problem! You got any other questions?
No more at the moment!
I am gonna DM for my first time today does anyone have any tips, everything is apreceated!
They said playing online, so physical dice wouldn’t be accepted at most online games as you can just fudge your rolls
Several people have recommended lost mines but that’s a hard adventure to find now it’s not free
Peril in pine brook is a free one
Wild sheep chase
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns link to lots of free stuff
Keep things simple
Don’t worry about mistakes
Have fun
Oops me misread
Nice catch, that’s mb
hello everyone! just joined the server ❤️
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
How may I help you today?
overall I just looked round the various parts of the server for now and I might join now and then with bringing fanart of my DnD party into the art section of the server ✨
I was however wondering if it's possible for me to promote stuff like DnD art commissions here or not (don't wanna do smth that's against the rules after all!) ❤️
Oh, I was thinking of buying it on beyond, is it not available there?
I’m pretty sure there’s #dnd-advertisements or #dnd-arts-and-crafts but I’d read #channel-guide to double check
thank you so much! ❤️
Or not
It’s called phandevler and below now
They added extra stuff to the old starter adventure
Is wizard a good class to begin with
Yes definitely
Oh thank you
Just post here if you need help
Not really
It's a complecated class to play because of the spellcasting system in the game and the spell book system they have
But if u can keep up with the massive amount of spells and stuf in the game then u should go for it
It's definitely on the higher end of complexity compared to other classes. But as long as you start at level 1, it's a surmountable complexity.
Wizard is a perfectly good class to start with, especially if you're level 1.
All classes are great choices for beginners. Just pick the one you think you'll enjoy the most
I wasn't saying it's not a good choice
I'm just saying it's more to keep track of than other classes
It’s a few spells and 1 spell slot to track
Yeah but at higher level they have a ton of spells while barbarians still only have like 1 ability
I think they’re trying to say that you’re still correct, but the difference isn’t big enough to be an issue
The question was "is wizard a good class to begin with" and the answer is yes
Let's not dissuade newbies from trying out a class just because of perceived difficulty
Well, “is [insert class] a good class to begin with” is a question that is always “yes” as long as it’s an official class
Umm hello is anyone here familiar with the artificer battlesmith class? Cuz im struggling and i need lots of help…
I’m relatively familiar
Wahhhh so nice ummmm would u mind helping me get a hang of it?
I can answer some questions, if that’s what you mean. I’m happy to help!
Wahoooo
Ye?
Waittt lemme send u a pic of the card I have to fill in
A card?
Yeah like the one u fill in to write in rhe strength the class and all that
Btw battle smith is a subclass (just in case you didn’t know)
https://youtu.be/Ynaa0Xv7J6o?si=rOc08dLhQPmLOBFL how to play a battle smith
It’s fine, better to get things wrong now than later
So it’s a character sheet?
Watched tht one too many words I dont know the meaning of ;-;
Or a class overview?
Have you at least looked at the basic rules?
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Wha thats a lot of stuff
Anyway, I’d recommend just making your character stats, species and background first
Ah wait those are 2024 rules
Eh the rules are very similar anyway
Just the character creation is a tad different
Just double checking, you playing on 2014 or 2024? Some DM’s allow Artificer in 2024 rules, tho it’s technically not official.
Okie so I made the species but are there only these 4 backgrounds?
The newest one
Unless you buy the books, yes
Ah…. Welp she aint really available at the time… if she was I would ask her for help ;p
Acolyte, Artisan, Charlatan, Criminal, Entertainer, Farmer, Guard, Guide, Hermit, Merchant, Noble, Sage, Sailor, Scribe, Soldier, and Wayfarer
Wow tahts a lotttt
I believe that’s all
I put this down somewhere just for this occasion
Which here sounds the closest to their backstory?
Hmmm lemme think a little (thats a lot to choose from)
I think artisan?
Not sure tho
Have you done your stats?
No…. Thats the troublesome part
Well that’s one part that I can help you with
Yay!
So do you know what method your campaigns using? Point buy, standard array or rolled?
If it’s any of the first two, I can help
Uhhhh…. I would asume rolled…? Wait lemme google these words
You don’t assume any unless you’ve asked the DM
Don't assume. Ask your GM what they use
Unless this is a practice character
Great! You know how those work?
No.
?tag new artificer
No tag artificer found in category new.
You have 6 predetermined ability scores: 15,14,13,12,10,8.
Allocate these to whichever stats you see fit
O okay gimme a sec then
Okay so; int 15, con 14, then dex, strength, charisma, wisdom
Sounds right for an arti
Now what do I do?
