Yes I believe so. Actually I thought getting feats was standard practice for both 2014 and 2024, but it seems I was misinformed.
Hmm I thought so too
Maybe I should stay in this channel with the amount I seem to not know
2014 it's very much "if the DM allows" (but often many groups are fine with it)
And thanks Deva for noting how in 2024 it's baked in!
For what it's worth, I haven't yet played in a 2014 group that didn't allow feats. It is quite standard practice, but that also means some groups may not do it.
Just something to keep in mind.
I see
Well I think we do them cause no one said otherwise
When talking about feats with my otger members we some already talked about which they will choose
And they have been longer playing with the dm then me so it seems alright
Heyyy guys
Hello everyone
I m new to this DnD game

I have seen the game in big bang theory and many reels on YT
But have never played it

Yeah I was on chapter 30 on something
Have taken a pause for few days
My bad my bad
I just didn't get it from the short form

Alright alright
Have fun!
Thanks ✨
hi, im new and was wondering if someone could help me with a few questions. Im trying to make a character on dnd beyond and im a little confused. is there any vc's or is it all texting?
We don't have VC here (it got abused too much to the point we had to take it down to protect the community).
But if you have specific questions we can help answer them.
Oh! And if you see UndyingNoob they’re a moderator here and often can be seen interacting with the community. Be sure to be nice to them, they’re pretty busy and deserve the kindness.
And speak of the devil and he shall appear
Thanks NuggetN!
I started writing that before you got here
If you want to play an online game on discord, use a VC on another chat, and preferably have your own discord channel. A friend of mine set one up for me and it’s hella useful.

^ Article on how different folks play D&D online
basically im just a bit overwhelmed by everything on dndbeyond so im struggling. i dont know what to toggle and untoggle or what im supposed to pick.
I also came here hoping to find a campaign that newcomer friendly bc every other dnd discord ive checked out is confusing or has 0 conversations.
Dnd can definitely be initially overwhelming
Yeah no worries. Take your time. Let's help you create a character
For the toggles on the first page I’d recommend just keeping everything default and level ups to progression instead of XP. And maybe make it public too so those who you send it to can see it’s
Unless I’m forgetting something, then Undying plz help
Nah that's a good place to start - there's also a checkbox on the Standard character builder option that provides help text to help explain the choices.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
dont check optional class feats?
which rulebook?
They come from different sources but the optional class feats comes from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything book
core or 2014 rules?
Stick with core rules for now - the 2024 updates are more new-player friendly IMO
That said there are some groups that still prefer to play with the legacy 2014 rules.
And some more that do a mix of both and neither, but you shouldn’t have to worry about that
It's the same D&D 5th edition - 2024 just updates things to clarify things and polish it up. 2024 is also forwards compatible - meaning you can use 2014 materials with it with minimal tweaks.
For example, I do a mix of 2014 and 2024 in my games, as I allow 2014 subclasses
But that’s a minimal tweak
ok. I picked a class. What now
Time for your backstory I believe
so ignore class feats?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
First pick a class - done!
Next pick your background and species
Your origin gives you a background feat
Completely forgot about background and species cuz I like making my backstory first, oops
No worries! As long as you have the core components to a character, the order is not as important
so i ignore picking whatever traits and expertise is for now?
I'd go ahead and pick them if you're being prompted for it now
Get the big choices down first, then go into the details of each section afterwards.
See, this is why you should be patient with this guy. He has to deal with incompetence like this on the daily.
And also to most other experienced players on this server.
This also works - you can go back and pick things later.
Either method works ye
Whats best for a rogue?
In terms of species, it doesn’t particularly matter. For background, criminal is a common pick.
Doesn’t mean it’s the best, but it’s common
And it synergises well with what a rogue wants
But tbh choose whichever fits your backstory best- except you haven’t done that yet.
So do whatever you choose
A rogue with the solider background is a bit more fighty. Bounty hunter, highwayman or pirate might benefit.
A rogue with the acolyte or sage background gets a bit of magic. Sometimes having the right spell at the right time can really help out.
im still trying to figure out class features. im sorry im being slow and confusing...
That’s fine, take your time!
I was and still am like you, and I’ve been playing this game for two years! You learn something new everyday
Oh man. I've been playing this game for years and I still mess things up! lol
can i post screenshots in here?
So for level one rogues get access to sneak attack, a special type of damage boost that allows them to do extra damage if they have advantage (the ability to reroll the probability to hit in combat). This can be done through many methods.
You can use a reputable file/image hosting service and share a link to images that way
But due to spammers/scammers, most channels do not have image embed permissions
I’d tell you to DM me, but it’s 11pm and I need to sleep soon
🙁 why do ppl ruin nice things
Very good question that usually ends up revolving around power, prestige, and/or wealth.
And selfishness, the desire for control, the need for attention and the very essence of human nature
But that’s not very newcomer friendly, nor is it dnd
i feel like im getting this all wrong...
What part are you on?
Better get it wrong now than later
Failure is a much more beautiful thing than success
As a wise person I know said, "Mistakes are for learning".
There aren't really any wrong choices at this stage. You've picked a class, now select a background and species. Go for what sounds fun.
Just don’t copy a character from media and it’s fine
Oh, and no AI
So there are at least two wrong choices
I have this favorite character from a book series called "A dance of blades" and hes inspiring this character. Is that a bad thing when making my first caracter?
Inspired and copied are different things
Those aren’t necessarily wrong choices, just really horrible choices lol
I’d argue horrible and wrong effectively yield the same results here
An overall unsatisfactory experience
I see wrong choice means unplayable not allowed won’t work at all. Horrible choices would work but are just not good choices at all
yeah trying to play the exact same character might cause friction, but basing your character on one or multiple others is pretty normal
That is a fair point
what are uncommon languages in dnd?
I know thieves can’t usually speak primordial
Jk I know what you mean
What about thieve’s cant?
Even being new I want to be useful so whats a good language to pick for the cant?
thieves cant is pretty much rogue excursive as its more liked code than its own language
It’s it’s own language
Understanding how criminal organizations communicate via signs/symbols/marks, maybe even coded language
its telling me to pick a language other the cant
Yup
So pick some more
...
Elvish, dwarvish, sign language
i get 1
If you want a suggestion, elvish and dwarvish tend to come in use occasionally.
But really, it depends on the campaign you're in.
Yeah - I'd suggest picking one that would be likely to come up in your game/campaign or would fit the flavor of your character
Two important things you may not be aware of: One, if you don't have a group yet, you're really making a character for practice, so your choices don't matter a ton as much as knowing the process of making a character. Two, as folks have said, languages are a good thing to hash out with the DM once you know the setting and which languages exist.
whats undercommon?
The language of lots of things that lurk underground.
like drow?
Those drow that live in the underdark, certainly, yes.
whats a good tool proficiency for a rogue? forgery? DIsguise? Poison?
Whatever sounds cool
Off the top of my head, I'd recommend disguise from those options. It's a bit more generally useful in my opinion.
forgery sounds fun since sleight of hand
Then take it!
can i come back to the personality stuff or do I need to do it before moving on? Are they required?
You can definitely figure that out later.
im lost again.
if im human, do i get common and choose 2 more languages along with the thieves cant?
Human's don't get an additional language (the languages come from their background origin)
To put it another way, languages come from the background origin, not the species/race.
i see it. Its the first sentence on the drop down. "Your character knows at least three languages"
sorry
Ah okay - then that's coming from your background and you can pick up to 3 languages for your character
Common plus two languages and then the one from the cant
Yep
wish i could know this many languages irl
You can know a lot of languages, it just takes a lot of effort
Yeah, three languages as a baseline is quite fancy!
i know, what, 2.2?
what do I do for ability score?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Knowing D&D lingo surely also counts as a language. /s
depends on your DM, id say take standard array for now
i was about to rephrase my question to get this answer
do i need to do anything under the calculations?
nope
What do I do for starting equipment? I dont really like any of the choices im being given
Just take it for now, you can discuss eith your DM later
I'd recommend taking the starting equipment - over time as your character advances you'll likely get better equipment
i have 4 choices. rogue and criminal
just take the items for now
all of them?
I think you get to pick from sets of options
yes, at least for rogue
Rogue Starting Equipment
(A) Leather Armor, 2 Daggers, Shortsword, Shortbow, 20 Arrows, Quiver, Thieves’ Tools, Burglar’s Pack, and 8 GP
(B) 100 GP
Criminal Starting Equipment
(A) 2 Daggers, Thieves’ Tools, Crowbar, 2 Pouches, Traveler’s Clothes, 16 GP
(B) 50 GP
Pick the option set that best fits, then you also get equipment from your background so take those too.
the criminal A choice fits the character im using as reference better, so should I take that and the 100 gold or get both and sell the extra gear?
You could pick option A from rogue, B from criminal, the reverse, or A from both or B from both.
well i reccomend at least taking rogue A, as you otherwise wont have weapons
criminal gives me daggers...unless they are thrown daggers?
oh, yeah, im blind
still daggers deal very little damage
would i make more money selling the extra gear or just have more by taking the hundred?
It's calculated so it's the same number.
Rogues don't mind Daggers at all
You're also not guaranteed to sell equipment at a fixed value.
In fact, the default is that selling it gets you half the value.-
yeah, but its nice to have that extra damage, especially at level 1
I don't think we need to worry about that overmuch here. Daggers are fine and flexible. And well usable on rogues.
" uses his signature pair of sabers" are sabres shortswords?
Hi guys! Sorry if i interrupt the chatting but i have some questions too, me and my friends are new do DnD and we wanted to start our first game but the rules are just too confusing the more i read into them so if someone is maybe willing to explain me the basics a bit <3
Scimitars are a quintessential dual wielder's weapon
Is there something in particular you're getting stuck on? And have you been reading the rules through chapters 1+2 of the Basic Rules? They're very well presented through there.
but are they considered to be a shortsword?
No, they're considered Scimitars.
Basically i know the basics on the combat, like the throws how to know when you hit, HP, bonus and etc, what i find more confusing right now is to understand two things... how to make a character and how the weapons work, mostly characters because they have like a lot of stats and abilitys and classes
You've likely looked at a picture of Drizzt Do'Urden. The wording here is meant to be more prose than mechanics. There are no literal sabers in the equipment section, that's just flowery language. However, Drizzt indeed wields two scimitairs, Twinkle and Icingdeath.
Oh and i know some of the rolls like carisma and etc too
Sure enough, there's a lot of character options! 12 whole classes, a bunch of species... It can be confusing.
Right now, while making a character, your primary goal is to pick one Species, one Background, and one Class. That's the core of your character.
Rather than look through all that information on every option, just give each one a vague overview to get an idea of what it's about. Don't worry about the specific numbers or keywords just yet. Once you've found one or two that seem very interesting to you, then you can sit down and read more in depth on just those ones.
its not drizzt but i love that series as well. its a series called "Shadowdance Series" by David Dalglish
I see, my idea was to make a human, bard lvl 9, alignment to the Chaotic Good and with a background of Entertainer
Would that be good to start?
Maybe don't start at level 9 if you're new!
I wouldn't recommend starting at level 9.
Yeah. If you're new, I recommend to start at a lower level. Level 3 at most, really. Otherwise you've got a whole bag more of mechanics to deal with.
What does level even do if i can ask? Tbh i said lvl 9 because its the generic thing i see
Unless you've already found a game that specifically says they're starting at a higher level, you should assume that the game is starting at level 1.
I see, i'll do lvl 1 then
That's very strange. I actually don't think I've ever seen a game that's starting at level 9.
You get more abilities at higher levels, so if you don't understand the base, you're complicating things for yourself unnecessarily.
me neither
are sabres a fancy way of saying shortswords?
scimitars
Well i found a game that they were starting at level 18, idk about that so i did not even question about it
thats VERY high
Saber is just a kind of sword in real life. In DnD, it's not one of the weapon options. The closest thing in DnD would probably be a Scimitar or a Shortsword.
I see... i'll start at level 1 then, the easier to start the better
Weird then...
they probably wanted a high level game
probably
scimitar is its own weapon mastery type. so i need to edit something\
but also, why do you specifically want a sabre?
Starting Equipment
Rogue Starting Equipment
(A) Leather Armor, 2 Daggers, Shortsword, Shortbow, 20 Arrows, Quiver, Thieves’ Tools, Burglar’s Pack, and 8 GP
(B) 100 GP
Criminal Starting Equipment
(A) 2 Daggers, Thieves’ Tools, Crowbar, 2 Pouches, Traveler’s Clothes, 16 GP
(B) 50 GP
for this, im going to do 100 gp and the 2 daggers. is that a bad idea?
and one more question to have this clear, the usual order in a battle is like, initial roll to see the rounds, attack roll that needs to be same or higher than CA, then apply the wounds that your weapon says, is that correct maybe?
character reference. The character im making is inspired by one of my favorite book series
That's probably fine, but you won't have any armor. Your DM might allow you to purchase items before the game using that 100g, but you'd have to ask them.
editing the weapons wont change the character
also, most DMs dont really like characters from other stuff, i myself dont care but i have seen peope not be accepted into a game because of it
if I put in the background that my character wears a mask, do i need to put it in the "Other possesions" category as well?
yes
Probably not necessary to specify that you have a mask, because clothes aren't really usually tracked. If you feel like you need to remind yourself that you have it, that's a good spot to write it down.
It can be important to your character, but from a mechanical perspective it's just part of clothes and doesn't actually do anything.
lifestyle matters in some games, not so much in many others. ask your DM
this looks so wrong 😣
this stat spread makes me feel like i messed up. is there a way to have someone check it?
You can share the link to it if you've set the sheet to public on D&D Beyond.
is it okay to put it here?
#character-discussion would be better!
okay. i put it there
Now that i made a character and a lf dm post, I just wait right?
That's one option. You could also look through #looking-for-players and/or #looking-for-community and see if anything piques your interest.
i feel kinda intimidated looking in those sections
Hi, im still new to D&D, learning how to play and all
I only point it out because it's pretty rare for a DM to browse the much larger pile of LFDM posts and pluck a player out.
Your odds are better if you proactively apply to games that interest you.
makes sense.
anyone knows how feats exactly work? Im still new to this
What confuses you about them?
i just dont get what they do exactly, i get that abilities, skills, etc have their own unique things in general, but feats are just extra things to help with your characters
That's pretty much it: feats grant you extra abilities and features you might not otherwise have access to. You can only take so many according to how your class progresses.
Ahh, thanks
Hello! Im new to the server and I also am new to DnD. Im already getting the hang of thr game and I already made 4 characters each with different classes
Possible, yes. Multiclassing is a thing
Though not good idea for a newcomer, and this specific combination for example is not exactly great (the two classes dont really share many beneficial stats, and barbarians cant cast any spells while raging, so you would essentially be playing only one of your classes at a time, at lower level than the other players, likely with worse stats)
Assassin is a rogue subclass. It’s not its own class.
Multiclassing has some requirements with your ability scores, and as long as you meet those, you can combine any classes
Whether or not its a good idea is a matter outside of the newcomers topic, as again ,multiclassing isn't really a great idea to start with, and you would kinda need to know what youre doing
It's not just an easy "you get to play two classes at the same time" that it sounds like
I mean. It is that easy, but it will really mess up your character if you do it without understanding the rules
Which in turns makes it not easy
Can do it easily
Can do it well with difficulty
The barbarian shall only do bard stuff with a trianle
So a bard?
Yeah
You know you can just have a ripped bard right?
Hmmm
Anyways, the newcomer advice is that multiclassing isn't a good idea if you dont know what you want from it
Outside of that you can go to #character-discussion or #optimization about your character plans and advice
Cleric and Paladin are different classes
Barbarian is also a class by the way. I'm not sure if you're wanting to combine it with classes because you had some other idea what it is
Hmm its seems i have been missunder standing the barbarian
Is barbarian not a race
No - it's a class
Nope. It's its own class
Is see
That explains things lol
Dang
A character is composed of:
- class (and subclass)
- species/race
- background origin
Do u guys have a list of races and classes
Check the rules! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Classes: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
Races/Species: https://www.dndbeyond.com/species
Backgrounds: https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds
Any species can.
Nice
any species can be every class
iam so lost
Where are you right now?
with what? ask any questions you have!
rock bottom, i do know its game that people play , create their own characters, dungeon master narrates the story, they role dice
i was thinking of trying out dnd with some of my friends
what is it?
well uhh, how does it work, how does a game usually go through
of D&D
Have you seen a game being played ever?
do you know the rules? have you seen a game before?
ye once or twice
i tried similar games but never really tried the actual game so iam lost
with what
The core of D&D is this:
- The DM describes the situation.
- Each player describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

hey I'm looking to DM for a group, all of us are complete newcomers. I've watched most of the videos recommended here for DMs and my only remaining question is what notes should I be taking? when I'm prepping for a sessions what exactly is it I should be making sure I have noted down
Notes you should take as a player or as a DM?
as the DM
Everyone has a different style, and you'll have to evenually find yours. I prep notes in layers of specificity: where players are likely to go, NPCs and treasure they'll find there (if any), what those NPCs know, combat encounters.
thank you! we are doing a premade beginner campaign to start. Hopefully that helps me find my style. <33
You can also find this sort of thing on Reddit (e.g., https://www.reddit.com/r/DMAcademy/comments/us0jk9/hey_dms_show_examples_of_your_session_prep/).
Did not realise that imgur was now banned in the UK lol
I also didn't, as I'd used it fairly recently, but also noticed more recently that certain links weren't loading for me >.>

Heads up: don’t accept DM’s out of nowhere, it’s a common scam to privately request commissions.
No AI content is permitted.
If you see any moderators say hi and be nice to them they have to deal with idiots like me on the daily.
Otherwise, be respectful and keep on topic on the channel. #channel-guide should help with that
YAHOOOO THANK U TWICETH!!!!!
Hi and welcome Elly - we are happy to have you. However, I would like to ask that you use caps lock in very small doses. It comes off as yelling (which is not polite) and can cause screen readers to read the post a letter at a time rather than a full sentence. Continuing to post in all caps could get the posts removed and formal moderations sent. ❤️

This might help
Hello there! May you find peace amongst the shadows!! I have several years of experience as both a player and a DM while in the process of also making my own dnd mechanics .
Respectfully, may I ask why you’re in the newcomer channel then?
wasnt sure if it was newcomers for the channel
or in DND in general so apologies if its the wrong channel
For dnd in general, but it’s an easy mistake to make. Welcome to the server!
With that being said, I’d also recommend looking at #channel-guide
Also read the #rules
And be nice
Hope to see you around!
I’ve played a handful of times but I want to make a new character and was wondering if anyone wanted to help
I’m still very new though
Yay thank you
hiii
i think we all welcome the holidays.
Hello, I'm looking for a 5e group
you are in luck. there's a specific channel on here for that.
:O
one is players looking for a dm, and the other is dms looking for players.
thank u
scroll down on the left, in the find a game section.
I'm not seeing the text channel
doh, beat me to it.
I frequent this channel enough that its muscle memory at this point lol
ah I had to add to channel list
Half of the questions in this channel can be solved by
#learn-to-play
And
#find-a-game
And
#channel-guide
To make a post in #looking-for-players the commands can be found in #find-a-game
To reply to a DM’s posting in that channel, simply open up their thread and leave a comment
wssppp
I feel like an old man who doesn't know how to use a remote control. So I type /looking for players (or click it in the text faq channel) and THEN I type what my character is and what I'm looking for? or do I just put my background and preferences?
Hey everyone!! I am super brand new just trying to actually get into DnD just wanted to join say hi and see if there’s actually in person play
Sorry for questions
Questions are good
To find in person play, it’d be better to look at a local games store or a library
There might be some info in #find-a-game
Awesome yea….thanks so much !!! Is there games here online on discord as well?
Yes!
Unfortunately I’m not the most familiar with the looking for games system in the server, as I mostly play in person with friends.
Awesome! Yea I just bought some dice lol. So I’m like all excited haha
There should be some instructions in #find-a-game, but I’m not too experienced with it
Yay dice.
-# delicious
Is it possible to persuade a bounty hunter (drunk) to think a literal tree is a suspect of kidnapping and attempting to put chains on its branches?
Well that’s a situation.
I’d mostly say no, unless maybe there’s magic involved/they are REALLLYYYY drunk and you rolled ungodly high
is waiting always so frustrating? I want to start playing and learning dnd. Anything I could do in the mean time?
uh oh
Waiting is certainly frustrating, yes.
In the meantime, learn the rules, familiarise yourself with builds, interact with the community and who knows? Maybe learn to dm.
It really depends on how drunk they are and the DM
So, the bounty hunter instead thinks IM the tree, and is now trying to arrest me LMAO 😭
Knock ‘em out
They’re gonna be too drunk to do much
If they’re drunk enough to mistake you for a tree
I mean, yeah, I could try
REMEMBER TO SPECIFY NON LETHAL
oh right
Don’t wanna end up killing the guy. Or just ask the DM for a medicine check to rend him unconscious
That's not how knocking people unconscious works
You just need to hit them with a melee attack when you knock them to zero, and say you're knocking them unconscious then. No medicine checks involved
Well, I just got teamed by the dm, and the players. So I left the dnd, its a long story, but simply The dm was glazing this one dude that is a full homebrew build (which I wouldn't mind, but this dude was just too op)
I’d argue if a person is drunk as hell it’d be easier to knock them out, and I don’t really know what to do at the time so I derped out.
Yeah that’s my bad folks.
That’s sad to hear.
Well, no dnd is better than bad dnd.
I just kinda wish that for once I dont have a person that has every fiber of their being to be the MC. Every dnd I did, that happened, and I dont really have much experience at all since it was just one guy gaining the light.
I mean, the DM could allow something else. They'd just have to allow it and decide how it works since it's not in the rules
True. tbh i dunno what i was thinking in the moment
Definitely a frustrating experience when a player hogs the spotlight and the DM encourages the behaviour. Hate when that happens.
Back to finding a dm I go
Good luck
I feel like making a character like Leroy jenkins, the next time I do one
Sounds fun

hello, i am wanting to make a character and i am looking for some advice on how to make the writing more compelling ...
i have never made a character before and its to play dnd at my school club
Do you have a character concept yet?
yes! i can hop on a call to talk about it if thats alright
And, more importantly, do you know the rules yet?
i have watched a crap guide to dnd
Sorry I’m not all too comfortable with sharing my voice online, but we can continue this conversation in #character-discussion to get input from others too.
and read the class i want to play
that sounds good! ill use text to speech. thank you
Be the GM and the wait will be much shorter
im new 2 dnd. i know nothing. it would be a disaster
well you see, you made lfdm post, most DMs dont answer to that, youll have a better chance responding to a #looking-for-players post
ive sent 8 and got 1 reply and it was to tell me to wait more
So If I'm a human
Can I like do things like how DMC 5 Dante does like summoning swords or can I use rune magic or are humans just guns and swords?
That requires a class feature or a spell i believe
Humans are just humans
They can use magic with a class, but they don't have any innate fantasy features
Ah
Quite disappointing but I accept it
Another question where do I find these classes-?
D&d beyond shows classes and some subclass what they get
I just checked the website
Hi I’m new here.
And safe to say I don't understand a single thing 🙂
So like to make a character such as a Rune master who uses rune magic and sword play to attack his enemies and he also has a affinity with fire, ice and poison
What class would be a mixture of wizard and knight?
Paladin I think
DnDBeyond has something called the Basic rules!
It has (almost) every class in the game!
Fighter has a subclass in the Player’s Handbook (you have to buy it) called the Eldritch Knight
It’s a fighter who can mix magic with their fighting abilities
Which version of the players handbook? Old or new?
Both
Oh ok
The new one is a lot better
I’ve been meaning to buy that but I’ve been distracted by my manga collection.
Yeah the 2024 Player’s handbook has 4 subclasses for all of the 12 classes in the game
Ooohhh
Technically 48 different combos
Like for example I had a friend who wanted to play as a super Saiyan that can get every single different transformation and have them stack but at the same time he also wanted lucario’s aura ability and essentially the way his character would work is he would activate one buff and then another buff and then just keep infinitely stacking them so that he would do near infinite damage that would then be multiplied by all of the transformations that he activated and then the total would be multiplied again by his level and all the damage he took due to the aura ability
Sounds totally balanced
Oh believe me, he wanted his character to be way way more broken
Ok
I’d allow this in my game, and remind him that my universe is sentient and is controlled by a petty, tired God called Nugget
Good luck finding a table for that character
Keep in mind he would start at level 20 and his max level would be 500 because in his own words “this isn’t an rpg if max level isn’t like 500 or something.” One of the spells that he wanted was essentially a one hit kill spell (which isn’t inherently weird in it of itself) but the way it worked was it wouldn’t just kill your physical form. It would erase your soul your mind, your history and your entire existence from every single plane of existence, alternate reality and timeline.
Well jokes on him, it may work in every form of existence available to him but I’m the Dungeon Master, I can break the 4th, 5th and 2872nd wall.
By punching some sense into him.
lol good one
Yeah he’s not getting a table at a serious campaign
Yeah he basically wanted unlimited power with zero drawbacks or consequences
Because it’s not as fun and it’s too complex for him
DM’ing is fun
r/thathappened
Though in further review of that’s the player he wants to be he’d make a lousy dm
Don’t blame ya
U can buy books with campaigns in them or homebrew ur own using stuff from the books!
So technically yes you gotta buy it but you can probably find ones youre looking for online?
I see
thank u tomato
I will refrain from drinking tomato juice as a token of gratitude
the rules (most of them) are also free to find
I appreciate it 🥺
Free Rules are free and give you plenty to work with: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Also, some free adventures for ideas: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1943-five-inexpensive-tools-on-d-d-beyond-to-make-dming
Late reply but Fighter has the Rune Knight subclass that does get to inscribe and use runes. It’s not in the PHB unfortunately, but it is published in a separate content book, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
so im like extremely new to this. im lost on how we like start a campaign?
Check out #find-a-game
You can also look for, or run, an in-person table
Will people just like post servers when they are looking for players? And like do we have to have a certain level of experience playing sorry 😂
I'm looking for players
#find-a-game has instructions for the servers channels dedicated to looking for players/DMs/groups
As for experience, lot of groups are generally fine with new players, though that's gonna depend entirely on the group, so if it's not mentioned it could be good to ask!
You don't need experience to start playing, but reading the free Basic Rules first will make things smoother.
Keep in mind that some GMs don't accept new players. They will usually mention this in the game listing.
I Think I’m missing something on my character sheet BUT IDK WHAT IT IS ヽ(;▽;)ノ
You don't need to pay or buy anything to play.
Please avoid caps
Im still trying ti figure out how to fill out a character sheet 😂
You can post any questions you may have here after you read the Basic Rules. The player section is the first two chapters
The D&D Beyond character creator is very easy to use
Hello! Im interested in joining a dnd campaign. Are there any ways to finding one?
Nevermind I just did a little backreading and I got some info 😂, but if theres anything I should know, please tell.
No AI generated things on this server, don’t accept random DMs it’s a common scam, and be nice to people.
And don’t copy a character from media as your first character. Inspiration is fine.
Thank you
i made a second character for practice, could you take a look? ill put it in #character-discussion
Sure
posted it
Question from a new DM how do players choose what items they start with and how do you make this fair? Do they generally just start with class and background items? What if they want extra specific items?
They get what their class and background give. Anything beyond thst is entirely up to the DM
Gotcha
Generally anything mundane is fine to give, like trinkets, and I'd avoid armor or weapons not listed in the player's class or background
Guys what races are there
2014 or 2024
Check the free rules for a good subset of the D&D species/races

Two different versions of the game, but I’d recommend play 2024.
Send the backstory to #character-discussion and we can judge it
DND 5e originally released in 2014.
We got a new redo of the original core books around the end of 2024, which comes with rebalances, slightly altered design philosophy, balance changes to some things, etc.
Think of it like a game getting an anniversary big megapatch that ugprades the engine and updates a lot of the really old stuff.

Thanks
Hm
?
any tips as to how i can make a good bard? my new after school DnD campaign is starting up next week and our last campaign was really short(we all died during the fourth session) and back then i was a rogue.
I am a little confused about words I have a character but not a campaign
like a game your playing in?
Correct I don't have a group
i’m sure you could find one! theres probably a few communities online where you could find a campaign
you could probably find one here
#find-a-game is where to look for a game. It gives you the instruction to use the looking for game channels
Maybe after a year XD
I have looked but not understood
Also I like cheese
I don't think that's relevant but my character likes cheese
what do you not understand?
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Hi everyone.
Get a pre made adventure, read it through then run it or if you feel comfortable with the rules make your own.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Alr thx
Anyone got a DND group I can join
same i wanna join asw

dont advertise for campaigns here. thank you🥰
Okie 🐔
Yeah folks - it’s off-topic to try and find/organize a game outside of the Looking For Game channels. Please read the information in #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use those channels.
@lavish kayak it's anything okay so I try to understand the rules but it's not sticking
Mind if I pop in to help?
Sure go ahead
well what do you not understand
Aight thanks
Fighting/joining a group/a lot of things
I have a feeling it’d be easier to ask what they do understand.
thats a better question yeah
How to create a character
Information on joining a group can be found in #find-a-game
Do you know the classes, how ability scores work and proficiency bonuses? As well as the core roleplaying gameplay?
No all I know is I have a dragon born monk named drogan
So you know of the classes system?
so you have a character, do you have the mechanics figured out?
Only on D&D beyond
Good enough
Not at all
Well shall we start on just the monk for now?
ddb does it for you
I have it's file but I don't think I can share it
you can if you make it public
Or things such as ability scores and proficiency bonuses first.
Or combat.
That's confusing in what context
Uhhh let me check
I'll add one more thing on top: it's totally fine to be confused by the rules. D&D 5E isn't exactly a simple system and most new players come in with some level of confusion, including being completely confused.
The fact that you're reaching out for help is a great sign that you're in the right mindset to begin untangling it! We're all here to help how we can! 😤
You don’t have to know all the rules now, but just enough to get you started!
Strength is 13 dexterity is 14 constitution 8 intelligence 17 wisdom 11 charisma 12
And we’re happy to help, so feel free to ask any questions!
So for monks you usually want a lot of wisdom and dexterity
Not intelligence or strength
?tag new monk
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.

Is it okay for a beginner character?
Yeah it’s not bad
I need to write this down somewhere I have the memory of a goldfish

It’s not bad, just for future reference
Okay
You rolled for these stats correct?
It has something red which if I'm correct is fire resistant
Yeah
Idk🐟
You’re a Dragonborn you just get those
The standard way to do it is roll 4d6 and drop the lowest.
(I think at least I play with point buy)
I am more confused
So, are you familiar with the dice? D4, d6, etc…?
Yeah
You roll 4 d6 and then remove the lowest roll, then add the numbers together
Okay I'm less confused
If you use the roll system on D&D beyond it automatically does that for u
For example, if I rolled a 3,4,1 and 6, then I’d drop the 1 and have 13
Just wanted to let them understand how it worked
Thank you and thanks @hearty blaze I will need more explaining for other things
Np, I got time
of course! we all got time
Yes please
So do you know what you can do on your turn?
Not at all
alright boiz, roll initiative
What dice?
d20 + dex mod
D20, +dexterity and another bonus if a feat or feature explicitly states it
14+2
So 16.
Now any enemies or allies that rolled higher than 16 will go before, and any that rolled lower will go after.
And also where Tf did the Tarrasque come from.
so 1 + 0 is 1
i just cast gate
idc that gate is too small
Guessing you’re a sorcerer with subtle spell, cuz I didn’t see that coming
Okay so the higher the roll the higher chance of going first?
not chance, just who goes
Well if it’s before the enemy’s rolled initiative
ANYWHO initiative determines turn order
yup
So my 14 dexterity+2 stats is good?
It’s not bad
It’s passable
You’re not gonna be a detriment, but you’re not gonna kill God either
So: combat.
On each of your turns you will get 1 Action, 1 Bonus action and one reaction.
With me so far?
Can I hold them over fire (at I think level 5)
You can certainly grapple someone and then run into fire, and you can do that at level 1. Just not recommended.
Good to know
At least I know one attack
Do you know this so far? It’s fine if you don’t
Not entirely
Very well.
I was told attack/move extra attack/move and movement
Each type of action (Attack, Dodge, Disengage. Etc…) will consume your action. Unless you’re a fighter with their class feature, you do not get this back until ur next term
A lot of schmooving
Yeah
Okay kinda understanding
Better than before
True
The same thing applies for your bonus action, but not all classes can utilise this perfectly. You cannot use an action from you Action to fuel your bonus action (for example, you cannot Dodge as a bonus action without a class feature)
Monks, however, can. They can punch someone as a bonus action.
Okay
(Well, unarmed strike of any kind)
And reactions are the least used of all of them, but still important.
Great example.
What are reactions?
Just so I understand
Reactions are actions that you can use out of your turn when certain circumstances occur
For example, and most commonly, an attack of opportunity (an attack you make against something leaving your range)
So a bow and arrow kinda of?
There are also many spells with the casting time of a reaction, but I’d recommend learning just monks first
No.
Okay
Okay
Monks also spend their reaction on a class feature called deflect attack
Sure.
You’re trecking up a mountain. It’s cold, the air is thin and the sound of distant thunder wakes you up from your trance. Suddenly, a bandit leaps out of a bush to slash at your exposed neck, which would deal 8 damage. However, you use Deflect Attack, burning your reaction but reducing the damage by 6, meaning you take 2 damage. The bandit then leaves, and you can’t make an attack of opportunity.
There's an interactive scenario here, if you want to give it a try, too: #learn-to-play message
Completely forgot we had that
My character only has 7 hit points
Oh so if that happens I'm just dead then?
your unconscious
not yet dead
No, because your deflect attack reduces the damage by 6 and you take 2.
You’re still up.
Okay
But you said that is at level 3
he doesnt have deflect attack yet
Oh then yeah you’re downed
Okay
I was assuming in the hypothetical scenario up there where he does have it
But we’re providing an example of how to use reactions
Yeah true
You use your characters reaction to do something on on another creatures turn or to react to something
Okay could we come back to this and go to hit points?
Sure. Hit points represent how durable your character is in taking damage and sticking it out in combat
?tag new hp
Hit Points (HP)
Hit Points are a measure of how difficult it is to kill or destroy a creature or an object. Damage reduces Hit Points, and healing restores them. You can’t have more Hit Points than your Hit Point maximum, and you can’t have less than 0.
Your class and Constitution modifier determine your Hit Point maximum at level 1. Hit Point Dice, or Hit Dice for short, increase your Hit Point maximum when you gain a level. A creature can also spend Hit Dice during a Short Rest to regain Hit Points.
Some spells and other effects confer Temporary Hit Points, which are a buffer against losing actual Hit Points.
What happens if you run out of hit points?
you go unconscious
and then roll death saving throws
When you hit 0 hit points you go unconscious and begin to make death saving throws
And if you fail all three?
you die
Okay so good RNG is needed?
and people can help you
to stabilize and go back to 1 hp
Then heal?
Hopefully
hopefully yeah
I'm saying that like is that the time when you try heal
Absolutely
Unless you want to meet Lady Death
A death saving throw - you roll a d20 on your turn. If it’s 10 or higher, you mark a success. If less than 10 you mark a failure. Once you get 3 successes you’re stabilized and still alive. If 3 failures, your character has died.
Yeah healing gives you hit points back
I just rolled for fun and got 16 first try
Nice - 1 success! A little closer to surviving.
Let’s not die folks
Are you familiar with focus points?
Also are you playing in 2014 or 2024
(If you know)
I don't also no
Let’s assume 2024 then
I think 2014
Then nvm
I'd assume 2024 due to probably using the free stuf on D&D Beyond
I did too, but apparently not
What makes you think that?
Stick did you just use the free options on D&D Beyond?
I didn't change a single thing and I saw 2014
Yes
then its 2024
That’s 2024
Okay
ANYWAY
Monk time!
Yay
What do you know about the monk?
Nothing all I know is drogan has a clarinet
Lemme try smt
Actually nvm
Monks are unarmed combatants, whose unarmed strikes and monk damage are based off a monk dice
Currently, it is 1d6, but this will increase as you level up
Okay
Your Martial Arts allow you to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, use your dexterity to grapple and let the monk die determine your damage for attacks
You also get unarmoured defence
You know who drogan is right?
Which lets you boost your Armour Class based purely of stats instead of armour.
The formula is 10 + Dexterity Modifier + Wisdom Modifier
Your Dragonborn monk?
Yeah
The modifiers are shown next to your stats (e.g 10(+0), 14 (+2))
-1
For which stat?
Constitution
That affects your health, not unarmoured defence
Unarmoured defence is scaled off dexterity and wisdom
+0
You remember that?
those are rough stats to have for a monk
Indeed
First character
I remember nothing and everything, except for the things I forget
Was wondering about paladin Spell Slots & Prepared spells function
- At (level 2) you have 3 prepared spells and 2 spells slots
And also get: "You always have the Divine Smite spell prepared. In addition, you can cast it without expending a spell slot, but you must finish a Long Rest before you can cast it in this way again."
So my question is from the three prepared spells
- do I get 2 spells of my choice + divine smite
or - do i get 3 spells of my choice + divine smite
The latter
3 spells +smite
❤️ ty, was afraid the mechanic would force you to occupy that new slot with divine smite
Np, have fun smiting!
I'll talk to you tomorrow nugget
Aight
My time is cl-over
I’ll respond if I can
Okie
You’ll likely have a better chance of finding local groups through your local game & book stores or even Facebook.
Can also check your local public libraries as they may host D&D groups
Okay thanks
Uh in 2024 e5 rule how does Rituals in Paladin spell list work for Paladins
- Do they occupy prepared spells like other normal spells? and do they use one of your spells slots when casted? (Also, I assume you don't need Components for some Rituals since you have a holy symbol)
using markdown normally isnt really allowed in the server, but to answer your question rituals dont consume spell slots, and they do "occupy" a prepared spell
You can only ritual cast a spell that you have prepared (only the wizard gets to go around this via their spellbook). And if a spell requires an expensive component, casting it as a ritual still requires it. Only non-expensive and non-consumed components may be replaced by a holy symbol.
ty guys
hey i’m new to all this i recently joined a session midway through, and i have MANY questions. first, how much dice does one need? second of all, since ive missed out on all of this how do i introduce my character? (for some info a beloved npc died suspiciously)
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Some games will allow you to use online dice rollers
As for introducing your character to the party playing, check with your Dungeon Master
They may have a good time/place in the game where your character will appear and meet the party.
thanks so much
Hi everyone! I’m new to the game, playing with my friends. I picked a bard as my character, and we’re all supposed to get to L4. What spells are good for a bard?
I have chosen some, but I don’t know if they go good together. I joined their campaign mid way
Hey there! for specific character build ideas, check with folks in #character-discussion. This channel is more specifically for helping new to D&D folks get started with the core rules and game mechanics.
Thanks!
Sooo I have been here for a while already
But is there a place where like
I don't wanna say to start out cuz that's vague, but I guess the main thing is how a character should be made?
If that even makes sense
So every table is different but the base steps for creating a character can be found in the 2nd chapter of the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
If you stick with standard array or point buy for your ability scores, most tables won't have an issue. If rolling, best to do that with the DM watching.
And yes we do have #character-discussion channel for discussing character builds
Character discussion can also be used for backstories too right?
Yep.
Right I did see the character discussion thing
I just didn't wanna show up like "so how do I make character good" lmao
People have been a lot more blunt
Folks will probably ask what you mean by "good" since that can vary a ton.
Touché
I mean I guess the main thing would just be wanting a character that's
Idk if nuanced is the right word, moreso I just wanna make like a good gateway character
Something to ease me in in a sense
So, a "standard" character?
Also tricky since what's easy for one person isn't easy for another. My suggestion would be a class/species combo you're excited to play. As for the personality and backstory, I think the thing that comes easiest to most people is to be themselves but "with horns" (or whatever). Roleplaying can be hard, so if you're new to it, trying to not jump too far outside of yourself is a fine place to start.
I mean I have always had a vague idea for a while on what I'd want my character to be
Contrary to the little icon I've got it'd be a drow rogue lol
So ah.. guys, can you explain on how to play as a cleric? Thought am new to playing as cleric
Which domain?
Maybe war
Read the cleric section of the free Basic Rules
Cleric gameplay revolves around spellcasting
Maybe? So, you didn't pick yet?
Basically, be proactive about preventing damage while also saving a good number of spell slots for damage and interrupts.
And don’t die
It's generally fine if someone goes down. That's what healing word is for.
Good general advice
And yes, don't go down yourself.
There’s a reason people target healers and supports in video games
Anyway, to go back to the question and not overcomplicate things: read what your class features and spells do. It's all in the Basic Rules.
Ok thanks
What the thoughts on blood hunter
I haz question for yall
How does one find people to campaign with if they don’t have serious friends?

So the enemy team can't heal as quickly they have to disengage
they dont have to disengage
only if they move away and dont want to be hit
Well no technically but in certain games you will need to disengage to heal
no?
In dnd Clerics have ranged support and are bulky
The no is agreeing with you
Yesn't. can't heal if you're getting jumped in other games.
Not this one tho stick
I know
If they dive the healer, they dive the entire party
One of the only things I do
Is there anything else I need to know in D&D
well what do you know now?
Combat/a bit more but I can't think of any
how to make a character (check), basic ability checks (check), modifiers (kinda), core gameplay (i hope so), classes (just monk) and combat (a bit).
thats my checklist
Well you shouldn't hope
do you know:
Skill checks
Modifiers
Your characters abilities
The fact that the DM aint the enemy
The last one yes
Oh actually Stick do you know how Focus points work>
And modifiers
Have you read the monk’s mechanics
skill checks are rolling a d20 + your modifier for something, like history
they havent
Clearly
...
Hey Stick can you read up on the 2024 monk’s stuff first?
How?
?tag new monk
Monk
Dart in and out of melee while striking fast and hard
Monks use rigorous combat training and mental discipline to align themselves with the multiverse and focus their internal reservoirs of power. Different Monks conceptualize this power in various ways: as breath, energy, life force, essence, or self, for example. Whether channeled as a striking display of martial prowess or as a subtler manifestation of defense and speed, this power infuses all that a Monk does.

Yeah, so monks can consume focus points for certain abilities
Yes, instead of having one attack as a bonus actions, you get two. Then later it’s three (lvl 10 I believe)
