Hello
can you tell me 1 rule? you never told me even just 1
Opportunity attacks occur when an enemy attempts to exit your range, and you consume your reaction to make on attack against the enemy
what does that mean?
is that some philosophy?
It’s a combat rule
When an enemy willingly moves away from your character, you can attack them
That's what it means
oh ok thank you
honestly you're my most favorite person here
Good to hear, they’re a moderator
they speak in riddles while you actually help so thank you
Nobody here is speaking in riddles. You asked for someone to teach you a rule and they did.
We are all trying to help but the more you read on your own and come back with specific questions, the easier it will be for all of us.
he simplified it and that's what i needed
Hehe
that's why i came back but when i wanted to ask a specific question no one answered
I’m sorry but if you need NuggetN’s description to be simplified you either need to read more or I don’t think D&D is for you.
And learning certain terminology can help too
i wanted to learn about ability scores
To be fair folks have different mental models (e.g. how they experience and understand the world) and so there isn't a perfect way of teaching
And Undying got you information on that
Then learn about them. You are using a computer to ask this when you could just… Google it.
That’s fair

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Oh we have commands for it. Neat.
I already forgot them all
Yep - ?tag new abilities
wait i thought the limit was 15 not 20?
Ok that’s a bit too sassy
You have 6 ability scores - they can go from 1 to 20
the youtube videos said it's 15
I feel like being 15 im going to find no rps:(
The ability scores determine your modifiers and thus influence your skills
D&D’s stat limit is 20 by default — there are rare situations in which this can be exceeded.
It’s 20. 15 is the highest point buy can get you. Point buy is one of the ways we determine how many stats you get.
Which ones
It’s most likely talking about point buy
i'd but the links but idk if im allowed
Didn’t think about that.
alr imma continue reading
You can post links as long as they comply with server rules and you provide an explanation of what the link is per server rules.
but wait is there a way i can watch someone make their sheet on youtube? im a visual learner
I don’t know any, but maybe search it up on YouTube and see how it goes?
Yes - check out WASD20. They have a youtube channel and actually go through the process of making a 2024 D&D character
Oh neat
i found one but they didn't go fully in detail
which is why i came here
none of those people went fully into talking about what thay were doing and why
oh and also how
Here's WASD20's 2024 character creation guide tutorial video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXwYXyKwaDo

I recommend having the free basic rules on hand and checking the process in chapter 2 to what is done in the video.
ah geez im getting tons of D&D ads lol
... yeah that tends to happen when you start learning about D&D
here's all the other things related to D&D
Feel free to ask me questions as well. I’m less experienced, but if I answer incorrectly and someone here corrects me, that’s learning points for us both. ^^
But yeah, having a general consensus on what the rules are will be a huge help to you.
Things start making more sense when you learn the game rather than just character creation.
Ditto
the pokemon?
The Pokémon was named after that phrase. “Ditto” just means “me too”, basically.
Meaning “what he said”
But also there is also a person under the username of Ditto on the discord
oohh huh i did not know that's how they got their name
wait but ditto is a english phrase right?
I’m a huge fan of etymology for fictional creatures. I wanna get into it for D&D creatures if I can too, even if it pulls from various existing media.
Keep it on topic please
if ditto is a english phrase and pokemon originated from japan then how did they get the name?
Even if it’s dnd related it’s not dnd newcomers related
I’ll close out by saying “don’t try to replicate an existing fictional character for your first D&D character”. Till then, have fun!
Aight cya!
there is so uch to read where do i continue?
What do you know so far?
im going through the chapters
On #learn-to-play?
It’s not named Ditto in Japan.
I KNEW IT
Again we recommend reading the first two chapters of the free basic rules
But also this is not the channel for Pokemon discussions (that would be #non-dnd-topics)
Please just use Google and keep it on topic
ok so guys apperently english is not a language so what do i replace it with?
Common
Are you reading the rules are you just trying to wing it with a character sheet again?
I’m tryna help him
what is initative
It is a dexterity check used to determine turn order in combat
how do i put a number?
do i just put 100 and call it a day?
It is not a manually entered number. It is a roll using your dexterity modifier
I assume you've reviewed the combat section of the Basic Rules?
i don't know how a modifier works can you explain it?
no i stopped reading at the make your character chapter
oh wait nvm
i did read a little of it
but didn't understand any of it
Seems like you skipped parts then which is probably why you don't understand
what is a D20 test?
The basic probability roll of the game. Covers attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks
this is all it says about it
You roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifier when you’re trying to do something
Each ability has a modifier that you apply whenever you make a D20 Test with that ability (explained in “D20 Tests”). An ability modifier is derived from its score, as shown in the Ability Modifiers table.
what's a D20?
oh dice 20?
i read it but what does it look like?
if i knew what it looks like i would understand
A die with 20 sides
THere's also a d100 (a 100 sided dice - but often folks use 2 d10s)
ok so do i roll it and put what i got?
Put where?
Your initiative bonus is your dexterity modifier
That’s what you write on the character sheet
i'll act like i know what that means soo do i roll a D20?
No don’t act like you know what that means, you should figure out what that means lmao
can you explain it? the website doesn't talk about it much lol
all it said was, Each ability has a modifier that you apply whenever you make a D20 Test with that ability (explained in “D20 Tests”). An ability modifier is derived from its score, as shown in the Ability Modifiers table.
Did you read anything about how to play the actual game yet?
Yeah that’s true. That’s also only one paragraph
yes many of it but they don't simplify it so it's hard to understand
What are you having trouble understanding man? We’re talking in circles here
can you break down what it says?
The whole rules? No I can’t
Give me an example of what you don’t understand
Do you understand how the game works?
no just the Each ability has a modifier that you apply whenever you make a D20 Test with that ability (explained in “D20 Tests”). An ability modifier is derived from its score, as shown in the Ability Modifiers table.
There is a table that you need to refer to which tell you the modifier
Each ability has a modifier, that’s self explanatory
When you roll a d20, you add a modifier to it
The modifiers are based on whatever your ability score is
Guh
You can’t really simplify it much more than that man
Every 2 points over 10 in an ability gives you a +1 to your modifier in that ability. So a 16 strength give you a +3 in your strength modifier.
(but also that goes in reverse too - an ability score of 8 means you have a -1 modifer)
And anything under a 10 is a negative
Yep
Yay math
@winter fiber Did you get all that?
sorry i'll read it later
The lowest you can go is 1 where -5
And the highest +10
im bad at math.
I don’t know how much fun you’re gonna have in this game then, you literally add every time you roll the dice
add what?
i'll reread it later
Um d&d revolves around math man, any ttrpg
Even if it’s like, 1st grade math
D&D is just like if Maths and English Classes had a baby
+drama
Or Theatre
And improve
when you think about it everything is math.
Yeah its just adding and subtracting
Read all of the Basic Rules first, particularly the Players section. You were asking very basic questions that you would know the answers to if you had only read the rules.
People here are very helpful but if you want to play a tabletop RPG then you need to put in the work to learn it. And D&D 5e is one of the more simple systems out there.
i have my character sheet done YAY
Good to hear
can you look at it to judge if everything is right?
There's #character-discussion for that
would i be able to send a photo there?
I don't go to that channel but I think you can send links
i have a counter idea wanna hear it?
Sure
i do this..
nvm didn't work i tried to send a dm
Hello 👋🏻
Hallo
I'm new to DnD.
Hey all. I’m new to D&D and was looking for a place to come in and play more often than I can do locally rn. I’m using the D&D and Beyond app to build characters, and I have low vision and read screen readers. That may complicate things for sure, but I’m willing to learn if there’s people who just like to relax and play the game for the fun it’s meant to be.
What is the first step to actually play DnD with people?
If you want to share your character sheet using D&DBeyond you can post the share link. You shouldn’t unsolicited DMs
These channels could help #learn-to-play #find-a-game
D&D has a free Basic Rules document that's enough to get you started
Welcome! I’d check out the basic rules, linked in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play . Feel free to read through at least the first and second chapter to learn how to make a character. D&DBeyond also has a character creator you can use to make a character while you go along.
Feel free to ask any more specific questions here :)
Check out the channels mentioned above
Oh, I did make my own character in D&D beyond...I don't know if I did it right?
You can post the share link here or in #character-discussion if you wanted feedback to check!
The math isn't bad in this. Especially if you're using the app for your sheet and rolls. All the math is done for you...
I would kinda argue that, but each to his or her own lol
i would say read the basics, not all the rules
I meant the basic rules. I will edit the comment
that makes sense yeah
guys im playing DND and it's getting boring is it the DM or is it that game? im guessing it's just the DM
how long have you played for?
in this game
20 minutes
maybe give it some more time, this feels a bit disrespectful to the DM
in 20 minutes you wont even have like 1% of the story
wait my bad actually it's been i think 35 minutes
still
im just soo bored it's all talking
hi
thats called RP
yeah but why isn't there any action in the story?
i made a great character that the DM can use too
because youve been playing for 35 minutes only
thats something the DM decides, not you
yeah that's fair
would it be rude to leave?
after 35 minutes? yes
Dnd takes some time to get into games first few hours might just be getting the party together and some minor roleplay you’ll get some combat soon
it's a online game and 3 others have left too
if you dont like it after the first session is completed its a bit less rude
why?
maybe they got bored too?
Are you sure you’re playing in an actual committed scheduled session and not in a drop-in drop-out Roblox lobby?
before the game?
Just based on previous discussion
no during
Yo...this just might not be for you. One that is super disrespectful to the DM and I really hope they aren't in this. Two, didn't you literally just start the process like this afternoon? After reading the entire afternoon's worth of back and forth in this thread, my immediate reaction to everything is that you're probably jumping in way too soon before actually learning the basics.
Something doesn't sound right about what you're saying. That sounds incredibly disrespectful if everyone is removing themselves from the game mid game. That doesn't jive.
oh he definitely started too early
Did the DM approve this character beforehand?
alr i'll stay in the story and see where it goes.
You generally don’t just make a character and expect it to work in any game. You usually tailor the character to the DM’s world
he barelly knows any of our characters
just the names
but also, dnd is not about combat alone, its only 1 part of it
Again, is this an actual scheduled D&D game or a Roblox lobby
and if you applied for the game you would have known the style
roblox lol
Dude are you kidding?
That would explain a lot
also he is leaving in 15 minutes i guess
WHAT
To be frank that’s probably a fair part in why you’re not as engaged
wait is it actually roblox?
the others are starting to criticize too
i thought you were kidding but
Yeah, try to find an actual game of D&D.
how?
oh wait
There are games listed here #looking-for-players
You can also post your own listing #find-a-game
there isn't even any adventuring
still, was it actually roblox?
ok so how do i find an actual DND game?
You might also consider being a DM and running a game with your friends in-person.
yeah wanna see?
#looking-for-players people post their games there
i got no irl friends lol
no
Again, a big part of why you’re likely not as engaged is because you’re not really playing D&D, you’re jumping ahead without a proper character and skipping rules and dropping into an unscheduled “D&D-like” Roblox minigame and expecting it to be a true D&D experience
honestly fair
so then it wasn't the DM or was the game it self it was the timing.
I was hoping you were kidding. Look man, don't want this to come off as discouraging, but I'm really hoping you take the time to try and learn some of the basics and find an actual game. A lot of help has been given to you in this thread and it sounds like you want 100% of the knowledge of how to play be just given to you without any effort to learn the game yourself. The community is great and helpful, but you've complained a lot about how the game works and what it entails.
Many people in here have given you guidance and tips on how to get the most of what you can without paying for anything. There's ways to find an actual game which have been shared numerous times in this thread this afternoon from what I've read. All the info is right there, and people continue to share it. Please try to show some effort and respect to the others that are trying to help.
i knew it wasn't the game it's self.
but i never insulted anyone...
and i did show effort i read a lot.
Most DMs don't run their games on Roblox for drop -in and drop-out players. Look for a good group. This is usually the hardest part of this hobby so be patient
imma go play minecraft.
sounds good thank you.
sounds about right.
It's Roblox, so most likely
I'm not saying you insulted anyone. I'm saying that you have been provided a lot of help and answers to your questions and it doesn't seem like you're willing to accept that help for what it is. There is going to be a level of effort required by you to learn the game, and you don't seem to be showing that you're willing to do it. Almost every response you've given today has been a complaint against the way the game works.
It's going to take time to find a good game. But seriously take the time you need to actually learn it. At least the basics. Understand what the game is and how it's supposed to play out.
It's a bit of all 3. D&D games are typically structured, scheduled events. Everyone agreed to meet and play at a certain time for a certain time. The DM has agreed to run a game for everyone (and should review characters beforehand). Players agree to engage in the game in good faith (and typically build characters for the world instead of vice versa). Having a flaky DM, players, unchecked characters all go against the norm
Kids play D&D all the time, but Roblox probably isn't the best platform for it
anyways ill be gone for like 40 minutes, see yall soon
Guys is trying to do a homebrew race as a very beginner player bad?
making it? probably
Using it? Maybe
Yes learn the game before you break it
I see
You found a new DM that quick lol
the land is called "ooo" lol
How even
Seriously. Right there. You're just jumping into a completely different game. On Roblox. You're honestly just setting yourself up for failure and hate for the game
bro i didn't even do anything the DM left the game lol
Usually yes, though a homebrew species is typically easier to make and balance than most other player options. I suggest trying to reflavor an existing species first before delving into homebrew
stop being a debby downer lol
That has nothing to do with what I'm saying. You just joined another game on Roblox.
same game...
never left.
the DM left my guy.
How does D&D Roblox even work lol
The issue isn't joining a new game, it's the method of doing so and part of why it feels like you aren't taking feedback in good faith.
We've provided resources on how to find a game, make a character, etc and provided resources and explanations as to why going against those things are a bad idea and not conducive to playing the game. When you ignore all that and immediately do the thing we just pointed out as the reason why you're having trouble it feels disingenuous.
Which warlock subclass is best for summoning I want to play warlock but also summon a ton
idk some how it does
Anyway, best of luck to you. I hope you find a game soon
I'm quite aware of that. I've read what you're saying. You're not reading what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that you're not making the effort to actually try and find an actual game. You want to learn how to play, and appreciate the game for what it is, do yourself a favor and find an actual game. Scheduled and structured. You've been given the resources to figure this all out. I really suggest that you do it.
You've shown no respect to anyone in this thread that has tried to help you. You've been wanting to get spoon-fed the entire game from the ground up and not actually make an effort.
Warlock heh
I can only assume how character sheets are integrated, dice rolls or other resources are managed/tracked, etc. Given your inexperience you should be cautious if it really does work or if it just makes compromises to provide a "D&D-ish" experience.
The drop-in and drop-out nature of Roblox games clashes with how D&D is played
but the game im playing is fun rn tho
this dm is great
Until they leave again with no warning
Again not what I'm saying. A game being fun has no correlation to what you're actually playing
But hey, if you're having a good time then that's all that matters
nah not this guy, he seems to know what he's doing
If I boot up Skyrim and have fun does that mean I'm playing World of Warcraft?
yes.
Now I'm tempted to see this Roblox game myself
Alright with that answer I assume you're no longer engaging in this conversation in good faith
want the game name?
Sure, I'll check it out later
This is off-topic in this channel though, so let's veer back to D&D
bro it's not that serious lol.
You're right it's rude to ask for help then ignore said help and troll with answers.
it's called "dungeons and Dragons online" on roblox
but i didn't ignore.
it also has set building
😁
None really focus in on summoning. That being said I suggest Fathomless Warlock since they get an innate subclass "summon" via their tentacle.
I see thank you
Np!
Dms do not just drop in and out of games and run them. I'm new to DnD myself and I even know that. Whatever you're playing on Roblox that's masking itself as DnD is not DnD.
The comments of good faith are valid. I really hope you reconsider how you're using this thread and start taking to heart some of the feedback and support you're being given. Doesn't seem fair to anyone that's tried helping you today, and it also doesn't seem fair to any other newcomers that are coming in wanting to learn and ask questions here as well.
Sorry another question what subclass or class are good at summoning
Depends on what you want to summon, and what you want your summons to do
I want to summon things and also have a sword I heard necromancer with sword sucks
I just want them to help me in battle
You might enjoy Bladesinger Wizard then
See what I was talking about? /lh
we should also take in consideration this person is a minor, and doesnt have much life experience
I think it time to move on and keep the space clear for more newcomers.
🫡
Blade singing, my favorite for that. Very versatile, rely heavy on AC to not get hit and hit them
I was also looking at the conjure wizard but sadly it sucks with sword
I just want use a spell caster with a melee
Like a spellsword?
That sounds cool I won’t lie but yea something like that
Good evening everyone
Good evening to you
How's it goin?
Spellsword is the term I know for melee fighters that use magic to help them like sword in one hand and the other with magic
But yea I think you could do that a few ways
Bladesinger is an wizard subclass focused on blades and sorcery
And in order to not be so squishy you could choose Lizardfolk as race cause they got an natural armor perk that gives them AC of 14
My last campaign so I was a lizard folk so this new one I wanted to try to be a human
Or maybe a elf
So i bought the 2024 phb. And I have mythic gme and the heroes of the borderlands starter set. What else do I need?
Hi
Well
Do you want to be a wizard more or fighter more or kinda equal?
If you already know the basic rules then it's time to find a group. You can choose to be either a player or the DM
Is it better to start as a player or dm first in your opinion?
It depends what you enjoy more, but being a player is often easier.
I myself started as a DM tho
Personally
Player
Much easier when you aren't responsible for others and have an guiding hand over you
Yeah
As a player you can focus on your character. What's in front and around you, your goals and the rules that are important for your features.
A DM has to do that for every NPC, as well as generating interesting and fun scenarios for a group of players who might all have their own preferences.
I just got into dnd a month ago and I wouldn't know where I would be without multiple dnd elders helping me out
Like, you don’t HAVE to start as a player, but starting as a Dungeon Master is significantly more complex.
I only dm’ed as a first time because I couldn’t find a game otherwise
And because it sounded fun for me
I ended up starting as a DM just because none of my friends knew how to play or would take the time to read the book.
Sounds similar to me
Couldn’t start a game otherwise
Plus I knew the most in my friend group
I started as a GM. It really boils down to personal preference
Honestly equal I already have like a story planned in my mind and if I had to think about them in that perspective I’d say equal
Hmm
Well there are many subclasses for each class to do something like that
I would say take a look at Fighter: Eldritch Knight subclass
I’ll check it out right now
Ranger is also kind of a fighter with some magic, as is a Paladin.
are you guys going of dnd beyond rules?
Yep Paladin I heard are the only real Battlemage class without having to craft it yourself
Which is annoying to me I must say
DDBeyond is the official website for D&D now and it contains the official rules. So most people here are using these, yep
Cause I'd like to be a Battlemage without the whole oath stuff on me and the believe/devotian stuff
Not quite accurate.
Clerics, paladins, rangers, druids and warlocks can all handle themselves in a physical fight and also use magic.
ohh very based
And that's just using the Free Rules.
Paladin
Ranger
Bard (sword or valor)
Fighter (eldritch knight)
Wizard (bladesinger)
Hexblade warlock
These can all be battlemages
@tawdry laurel Which do you think is better eldritch knight or the wizard sword one I forgot its name
wow your art looks awesome
Yea I heard though that the Battlemage I know as in two handed weapon, heavy armor and magic support is Paladin
Bladesinger and I don't know if I am honest
If you're brand new, I'd suggest you start off with the Free Rules and get to grips with the game first. There's plenty of content to explore without spending money.
I’ll just go with blade singer it sounds fun
Wrong message respone I think
Thank you for the help
No problem though look a bit through the two again to be sure
It wasn't. I was talking to Booger.
Of course you can also multiclass a bit
Ok
Not recommended for new players to multi class if you don’t know what you are doing you could nerf your character a lot
woah fancy title
So like for the blade singer do you conjure a blade or just enhance a blade
Sword *
True. I only now how to multiclass good cause I have buddies who help me a lot and let me ask many questions and teach me good
It refers to the blade dance and the noise the sword makes
Blade singer does sound dope I’m not gonna lie
Typically they use an actual blade. If you want to summon armaments, Pact of the Blade Warlock might be more your jam.
I think I’ll give blade singer a shot this campaign
blade singer is just a spellsword?
Yes
i feel so out of my depth haven't played dnd in years
All good. If you want to look through some newcomer resources, our bot covers a couple of helpful links.

are rogues still broken/
I suspect Pickle was referring to older editions.
man when i played in high school i swear he had like 4 6 dice and jsut destroyed everything and a ranger has like no damage
based i like hunter but gloom stalker and that one where you can teleport is pretty cool
i like bird animals
Wizard Sangromancer (Grim Hollow) so I'm excited to see how strong this turns out
Grim Hollow is third party so depending on people you won't see it
It's a new setting and world with whole lotta new subclasses, good amount of new spells, and races
Is bladesinging like a third party
No it's official. Most recently released in the book called Tashas Cauldron of Everything
Thank you
Hi all, completely new to this. I’ve played a lot of MMORPGs online, but in terms and something like D&D, I’m a total novice. I’ve created my character and read through some of the rules. I learn more by sorting of doing rather than watching/reading. Just wondering where to go now?
find a game!
DMs post their games in #looking-for-players
D&D is definitely a game that is learnt better by doing.
But look at classes, species and backgrounds in the Free Rules and try putting a character together for practice.

they made a character and read the rules already
So they have, my mistake!
If I gave someone my character sheet and all the details, would you be able to help me? Give me advice etc. need help with an equipment too. Kind of just want to make sure everything makes sense.
You can also check with folks in #character-discussion
So for a wizard, am I allowed to adjust the size of my casting orb and do I have to be holding it to cast or is it just allowed to float around me (I’m a Graviturgy wizard and I’m trying to fit the theme)
You technically need to hold it. But you could concieveably flavor it as far as having it float around as long as you still consider one hand as holding it.
Maybe have one hand busy controlling it
That way you can flavour it however you wish, but you need to have one hand occupied
Ok, I so I can say it’s floating but I have a hand focused on it to keep it floating???
Basically. But you'll have to be quite stringent about it.
As for the size, the book doesn't say anything about it other than weight. So I suppose you have quite a bit of leeway there.
I'd just bring it up with your DM and make sure they're good with whatever you go with.
Ok, thanks!
Another question, sorry! Am I allowed to tear the ball apart for style points and keep all the pieces of it floating or is that just a dumb idea lol
As long as it is purely flavor (no mechanical differences) , it should be fine. Just ask your DM
Reflavoring without changing the game mechanics
Welcome! Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel for useful resources to start learning how to play D&D
Be prepared for any given DM to reject such an idea if they feel it doesn't suit their setting, tone or otherwise.
Hi so I'm pretty much completely new and wondered if there was a server someone could suggest for finding a campaign or if there's a dm looking for a beginner player out there?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Welcome! Once you've gotten an general understanding of the Basic Rules, you can follow the link above to learn how to get your search started on this server.
I've played in a few online campaigns then took a break so I understand the fundamentals may just need a tiny bit of extra support in a campaign

Sup
Howdy!
I'm trying to get into dnd but I'm worried I'll lose interest
Is that a bad thing? Maybe it's not for you. Or maybe you're only into it for a short while. Neither of those seem like terrible outcomes to me!
The hope, though, is you find you do like it and enjoy it for a long time.
one of the benefits of D&D is that you can use the Basic Rules for free so if you start to get into but then fall out, it will have cost you nothing but some time
Idk how to create characters
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder this link can take you to D&D Beyond's online character builder.. you can even check a box to say you are a beginner and for the builder to show help text
Ahh okay tyty
Character Builder in D&D Beyond has been super helpful for me as a beginner. Highly recommend, and then also back into it all by reading the book if you have access to understand the building process even more
Hi I’m new
Hi new I’m Nugget
How can I help ya
Hi nugget, can I ask how you made your mind on what character you made
What
Could you… rephrase that
Like how do I decide how to make my character?
Yes sorry I’m not that smart
I think they mean - what was your inspiration, reason, etc as to why you chose a character that you did,
I see
Well I mostly have 3 scenarios when I make my character
Either I make it off a prompt (7 deadly sins, stereotypical characters for each class, someone asks me for advice with their preferences)
Just pieces of inspiration either from random ideas, shower thoughts or quotes
Or
Getting a niche or interesting (and normally suboptimal) subclass/multiclass combo and making a character off there
I find that you should either find a trope, a subclass or a mixture of both to help make your character
Am I able to draw inspiration from like heroes off of movies or tv shows or does it have to be completely original
Example of no.2
“There is no one more afraid of dying than those who live forever”
A warforged cleric who was abandoned as a war effort that was given a human soul and emotion, and lost everything that was close to them. Then, though they weren’t living, they were able to harness the power of faith.
Inspiration? Yes.
Copy? Please don’t.
It’s a very common course of action for beginners, but it just constitutes a mindset that removes originality
No no not copy. More like take someone’s personality of a hero you liked and then just apply your own background and skills
For example?
Like Homelander’s lack of self awareness and inappropriate humor mixed with his selfishness and the powers and a backstory that is completely different and unique than his. Like you can tell my character’s inspired by a tv villain but has absolutely no similarities other than their behavior
I am horrendous at trying to explain my thoughts so I’m sorry
No I get your point
If it’s like that, and you throw your own spin on it, then sure!
But try to get more original as you make more characters
And try not to make them too edgy, it’s overused
Ah got it, I think I’m trying too hard to make sure I make a good character
Are the skills and powers based on your class or do you make those up to
Based on your background and class
Define what you mean by skills and powers
I assumed proficiency and class features
Skills as in history,stealth,religion etc
Yes this.
Background, class and sometimes species.
You get a few for free and get to pick some, based on your background, class, and some species
hm okay
Hi guys! I just joined and am new to the D&D ive been trying to watch people play here and there feel like i have maybe a simple understanding on how to play. but a character shee seems like a nightmare. if anyone could give a good reference/guide on how to get started. id be uber thankful! ❤️
Have you used dnd beyond? That is a good character maker. Be warned that a lot of options will not be available to you without buying the books.
Also, any help with helping your character, whether it be backstory, feats, ability scores, or anything, is done in #character-discussion
ah i see. sorry from here on ill try to be in the character-discussion. i havent used anything software wise to help. Really, a friend of mine is trying to start a campaign thats basically D&D set in a skyrim universe. I think called Delvebound? I just thought maybe itd be a good idea to join a specific server to try to absorb some info I guess. lol. thank you for your wisdom (:
Oh no problems, our job here is to direct new players.
And if you have any questions feel free to ask!
hi
Hi, Nugget dnd newcomer helpline, how can I help you today?
jst saying hi 😅 not sure how this works
Hi then!
Basically, you knew? If yes, then feel free to ask questions here. We’ll try to answer them. Hopefully.
You’ll learn more as you stay here longer.
Well met, adventurers! I’ve just arrived at your campfire and look forward to questing alongside you. Could you share which software or apps you use for your journeys, and how I might properly join the party?
I don’t use any apps (dnd beyond is a website for me) but #find-a-game could assist you in your travels. I wish thou good fortune in thou affairs!
Thank you, good sir until we meet again (I'll definitely have more questions about DND beyond so I'll be lurking)
And I’ll be waiting!
Could you tell me more about the term homebrew what does it mean in the context of dnd
“Not official to the rules and book”
For example, say someone’s campaign gives them a magic item that creates a donut that explodes. That item does not exist in the official DnD books, and would be considered homebrew
Any questions?
Ah I see, yes actually and could you guide me which is the appropriate channel to find a dm or community looking for a player. Who could help me setup and fill me in with ruleset of their game like take in a newbie like me
Also do you think the using ai to create character acceptable or is it considered taboo?
Well
#looking-for-dm
#looking-for-community
#looking-for-players
And most importantly, go here first
#find-a-game
It’s taboo
And sharing anything AI generated is not allowed on this server
You joined the game to make a character and play it, why would you just get an AI to make it for you.
Pheww glad I got that out of the way, I draw manga sometimes so I have a good grip on drawing characters by hand
As a DM, I would have no reason to take in a player jsing AI to make and play their character. If I wanted that, I'd just cut out the middle man (the player) at that point
I think that's acceptable right?
Fair enough
Drawing your own characters? That’s great!
Yup using csp sometimes and mostly traditional way
I’d encourage that as a DM
Obsidian, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, Syrinscape, Kenku (for online games), D&D Beyond, Inkarnate, Voicemod, etc
That's too much at once 🫠
If you're a player, you don't need that many tools
GMs usually use more
Which ones do you think are the essentials?
Like for my first game how do I set up properly?
Is this for an online or in-person game?
Usually, your GM will tell you if you need digital tools
Online
Then it's probably a VTT. The more common ones are Owlbear and Foundry
Your GM will tell you what you need to install
I really only use Owlbear sometimes (once. I used it once)
That's more than acceptable.
DND beyond is your main go to?
I only really use it for character creation
I play in person, so I don’t use apps too often
D&D Beyond has a VTT but many GMs use it on top of another VTT
Vtt stands for?
Virtual Tabletop.
Gotcha
Hello! I've been thinking about starting to play D&D and I'm not quite sure how to start, I kind of know D&D beyond character customization? I've looked through it to an extent, but I've never actually done anything with it. Any tips or ideas to help and get started? Thank you for your time and consideration! 😁
do you want to know the rules, or how to find a group?
I have read the rules but is there anything super specific i should keep in mind as a new player?
- Respect the DM
- Respect the other players
- Dont cheat
👍
Don’t use AI
alright
that is a bit obvious imo but yeah thats a very goood point
It’s just as obvious as “Respect the Dm” and “Respect the players” imo
oh yeah definitely
im not saying i wasnt obvious😅
Tru that!
Anything in making a character i should avoid? In terms of like, complexity? (or anything else to avoid)
for a backstory, make it level appropriate. For example, slaying dragons at level 1 is not likely. 2, avoid homebrewing without the DM saying you could
alright
Unfortunately, it's not obvious to some people and that's why it needs to be reinforced
very good point
Avoid character concepts like "I'm a lone wolf who prefers to do things alone," "I'm secretly evil and will betray the party, ""I pickpocket everyone and steal anything that's not bolted down," "I'm three kobolds in a trenchcoat, "I'm a warlock pretending to be a wizard," "my character is actually [politician name]," etc.
These are played out, not funny, not conducive to a good party dynamic, and just bad overall.
Alright
i appreciate the help
im gonna head off to bed, thank you for the information :D
Also to add in terms of mechanical complexity, avoid multiclassing as a beginner. You can end up making yourself weaker, and there's more to it than just getting to play "two classes at the same time"
Hello! I’m new to DnD and basically have just enough information to make a character.
I was wondering if I should ask about finding a group to play with here, or in a different channel.
Check out #find-a-game it has all the details on finding a game here
Okay, thank you 💚
so as a first itme player what should i knwo about ?
I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat. Also remember to stay respectful, and don’t make a character that won’t collaborate with the party
hey guys, ive been trying to find a game on roll20 and in here but not had any luck. any other suggestions to find an online game for a new player?
Hello again!
sup nugget
i have. havent made a LFDM attempt yet. was hoping to find a game, even a one shot just to get the hang of things
Try making a LFDM then
You can try #looking-for-players as well
Hello im new to dnd can someone help me learn and play?
Welcome have a look in #learn-to-play it’s got lots of info to get you started
Thank you
Would you guys say its easier to learn DnD as a player or DM?
As a player just because there's less to keep track of, but it's completely doable to start as a DM if you want to
Been trying to get into it for a few years now, but struggling to find not only the resources, but also a party to play with, anywhere you could recommend looking?
Hello new friends I’m newish to dnd and I’ve got some ambitions settings to dm for
If you're willing to DM, finding players online is as easy as checking #looking-for-dm and picking anyone😅. And there are some free adventures available if you don't want to make up your own
Awesome thanks for letting me know
If you're looking as a player, it'll be harder. Iamrazorwing has a good list linked in their bio. And you can check #looking-for-players here
Hello! I am looking to start DMing D&D again after taking a hiatus for a few years. What's a good way to start DMing again?
Published adventure modules are a good place to start. I would recommend either running a low level adventure or getting of the anthology adventure books and picking one adventure from that to run. You'll want to start with something short and simple, because then you can either build upon it to make your own story or you can move on to something more complex once you feel more comfortable
Sweet thank you for the advice!
Feel free to check in with fellow DMs in #dm-discussion as well
The Basic Rules and LMoP are all free. There are other free official one shots.
LMoP?
LostMines of Phandelvar
but I don't believe it's free to claim anymore
?tag ddb claim
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
Oh that's too bad
This is stuff on DnDBeyond that's free to claim currently
Hello I know nothing of DND. I have a cool character inspired by The Son from Hotline Miami 2:Wrong Number and I feel like I can do it! But the last table assumed I'm gonna be the typical Edgy archetype and didn't give me a chance while my character is evil, Sadistic, cocky and a criminal, She ain't what those archetypes are. I really want to make this character shine and I hope to find a table that will let me.
Create your character with GM guidance
If a GM will accept in the first place.
Some of it is going to be a matter of framing. If you come in saying you want to play an evil character, the default answer is usually no
I wanna do evil but I wanna do it right. 😭
If the character is made with GM guidance, that means they'll accept it
If you come in saying that of course you'll work with the party and take quests, but your character has no morals, you've got better chances
Because otherwise they won't approve the PC
I think Belphégor means to work with your DM to create a character, not to come to your DM with a character already planned.
Framing it as inspired by other media also hurts your chances imo
Evil PCs are auto rejected by many GMs, for good reason
Your best option is probably to work with the DM to find a version of that character who will work in their d&d game
Well yeah I just mean like. I have a general story for her. And will mold it to fit with the GM's story and setting. But they wanted to completely change her so I said no....
And maybe accept that you'll need to play someone else first with a new group until you build trust
That's your prerogative. Find another GM that's more flexible
Yeah cuz Edgelords gave em a bad reputation but I feel I can really make this character shine.
I'd let someone I know play an evil character before a stranger because I know they won't do it the meme way
Hello everyone
my name's sun, I've never played dnd myself but I have spent a lot of hours watching others play so I have the basic concept of how things work (no clue about character sheets tho haha). I'm still learning english as it's my 3rd language. So I might ask a lot of questions and say stupid shit (I ask for your forgiveness ahead of time ╥﹏╥ ). I love fantasy and fiction as it's also my favourite genre, so I decided to start playing dnd along with learning the language. Right now I'm looking for a suitable group if anyone wants to talk my dms are always open
I won't allow evil characters unless the player is family or a friend that I've played with for a while
Check out #find-a-game #looking-for-players
Alrighttt thanks
If you want I can earn the chance by making a different character and joining? I read too many stories of the Edgelords and that's why I wanna do an evil character, To show people it can be done right while still making a memorable character but if I need to play someone else and show you I'm serious then hey bro lemme do it then.
Again, just talk to your GM about it.
Communication is key to good D&D
I got no gm rn 😅
Find one, then make your character with their help
But really anyone I'm open to join a table if any of you got room for a Gunslinger class.
Idk where to find tables here.
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a game - see #find-a-game
Go to the channels I linked above
#looking-for-players is often faster
Homebrew class + Evil alignment + Character you're adamant about is going to be a tough sell for a lot of DMs. You can certainly keep trying, but know that it'll be a harder sell than normal and will result in a longer search.
That's another blocker. Many GMs don't allow newbies to play homebrew classes.
Many settings also clash with Gunslinger, and may not be allowed at the table
My advice is to stick to the official classes first and play a heroic, non-evil character. After you build trust with your group, then propose your evil character
Well yeah I wouldn't be able to vibe with medieval stuff but I'm more interesting in like 1700s till 1990s type of settings where flintlocks or guns are a thing. So I wouldn't join a fantasy medieval one in the first place.
And my brother wonders why I struggle giving DND a chance....
Consider being a GM too so you can play the setting you want
I rather find the gm with the setting i want I wanna GM at some point but I feel I need to be a player first.
D&D's default setting is heroic fantasy with medieval flavour. You just eliminated like 90% of possible tables you can join
Then my brother took me for a fool.
Give other systems a chance too if you prefer a more modern setting and with morally ambiguous characters
I legit thought it was hella diverse.
And that some folk do like. Pirates of the Caribbean type shit which is as far as I wanted to go.
It can be - and it often is. But D&D as a game is fairly centered on heroic fantasy.
There are tables that have the vibes you want, but they're relatively rare.
Moving too far beyond those expectations can lead to less fun D&D games as you run into the limits of the games expectations.
The further you stray away from the ideas of traditional swords and sorcery, the less likely you'll find the exact kind of vibe you're looking for. Those games exist... but they're not very common comparatively.
I do suggest trying D&D in it's basic form - that can give you a better idea of when and how to customize/homebrew things that actually fit and are balanced around the core game expectations.
Or try other systems that do what you want better
I'm just gonna have to play the game how it is cuz I tried every server and I'm just giving up at this point. So I'm gonna scrap this character and just try the stuff I don't like.
Building trust with your group is key. A GM will be more likely to approve homebrew and evil alignments if they know that you're a good fit
Sounds like you may have gotten a little too committed to an idea, a little too quickly. Most folk around here will recommend keeping your character ideas loose and malleable until you get into a game and can work with your DM.
On the bright side, building a character is one of the most fun parts of DnD! And now you get to do it again. You can make a practice character or two in the meantime, and when you find a DM you can try to nail down an idea you like.
I did. I told those GMs I'm willing to change the backstory and even the class to mold it to their setting but it just never seemed like enough. And they wanted to pretty much change the whole character. Which is frustrating cuz I spent hours working on her. And still am Even.
Yeah, because most GMs reject evil PCs outright. Especially if it's a public table with players they don't know
Yeah. Which just makes me wish the Edgelords didn't ruin evil PCs reputations. Now folk assume I'm gonna be the same and all my hard work goes down the drain.
Sorry I'm just upset but it ain't y'all's fault.
I'll quit whining
Well, if you're character doesn't seem to be jiving with what DMs are looking for in a player character, your only options are:
- Keep looking until you find one that does
- Try to start working on a different character idea
It’s not always the edgelords. There’s also this narrative difficulty of explaining why an evil character would want to pursue the plot of the campaign, why they would want to party up with all the other characters, and why all the other characters would want to party up with an evil character.
I don't know how to play 😂

Well I'm thinking mine is a Gangster who aspires to be a Mob boss. And she isn't evil as in she will do messes up things for no reason, She has a purpose and it's more about actions that take her to her goal, And the journey would be her working towards that goal in the campaign, Which I feel the DM can easily mold it into the setting that she works with the party out of her own interest yet will betray them if it gets her closer to her goals, if this doesn't make sense I can explain more.
Cuz she isn't really Evil? It's more she's Power hungry which means she'll do whatever to get there.
The "betray" part is a huge deal breaker
Yeah I'd need a DM ok with party infighting...
There's a reason why GMs disallow evil characters. We've seen all of this before
So why would an adventuring party want to take along a person who would betray them if the opportunity arose?
That will be extremely difficult.
You need a whole table that’s ok with it. Not just the DM. It’s also very likely to ruin the fun for all of the other players as well
Previously we said finding a DM who is okay with evil characters would be difficult. Finding a DM who is okay with player infighting is extremely difficult.
Yeah I been sold a lie then. Specifically by my brother
All that hard work for nothing man. I legit thought I'd find people who'd try it
Again, you might be interested in some other systems. WoD for example has party conflict as a trope.
It's common recommendation that a player character should never:
- Disrupt the dynamic of the party
- Prevent progress towards the goal
- Put other player characters in harm or danger on purpose
This actually is almost all the reasons why “edgelords” give evil characters their reputation
Word?
Wod?
world of darkness
To be honest with you, the "I will betray the party" character archetype has been played out in D&D. It is rarely as epic or fun as you would think
it never is
Most of the stories I read it's mostly people who wanna do an evil character but end up just being annoying. And idk I wanted to make an evil character but do it right And so everything the Edgelords DIDNT do and that's make a character with purpose, A good backstory and make their actions have actual meaning rather than just tryna be cool and brutal. Like my character could have a sick ass Arc.
that is unfortunately what most edgelords say

I guess...I don't even want her to be all Mysterious and Broody. I wanted her to be very...Confident? And harsh, Like a literal mob boss who isn't quiet and would legit yell at their own men.
You can use D&D Beyond to create your character. But read the player section of the free Basic Rules first
Like sure she's dark but not the stares at you with silence Kind.
still an edgelord
Where are th free basic rules?
Well I at least tried.
Play a more conventional character first since you're new to D&D and to tabletop RPGs in general
Y'all have fun ig.
in the bot post i just sent
here
No cuz I hate heroic fantasy. I hate magic in general. It just isn't my kind. And I was told people do a lot more than just that setting so I thought it'd be easy
But it ain't as y'all informed me.
just play a different ttrpg
So yeah I got nothing. And Im not gonna bore myself to death.
Then you'd hate D&D since it is heroic fantasy AND high magic.
Right tool for the right job. Look at other systems
I'm confused.
dnd is not the only tabletop roleplaying game
The character you want would be perfect in a WoD group
yes, WoD would fit you perfectly
Please what is WoD?
World of Darkness
World of Darkness
Table Top Role-playing Games (TTRPG) is the umbrella term. DnD is just one of many kinds of TTRPG.
Just like how Board Games is an umbrella term, and chess is just one of many board games.
You know how some people call every game console "a nintendo" or "a playstation"?
Same things happens with ttrpg and D&D. It's one of the most popular examples of a broad selection.
There's plenty of diverse games out there that aren't DnD, from Blades in the Dark, to LANCER, to Pathfinder.
Some people refer to all role-playing games as DnD, but that's incorrect.
it does, but it focuses on medieval fantasy
So my character would be in WoD? Does it have gunslinger class?
My brother said Gunslinger was Added to Dnd
not officially
It's literally the reason I even wanted to do DND.
its a homebrew
The Gunslinger class isn't really the main problem here.
The issue is you hate high magic settings. D&D is a high magic system.
but yeah, WoD is literally what you want to play
There's also the fact that you want to play an evil character who will betray the party
Unfortunately we can't really talk at length about other game systems here, since this is the official DnD server. #non-dnd-topics would be the closest channel in our server, but you're probably better off trying to find other servers dedicated to those specific game systems.
It's gonna be difficult for you to find a DND group with those parameters
maybe we should explain WoD if we recommend it, but that would need to happen in #non-dnd-topics ,as DOSH said
hey I am looking for a dm who can play dnd sunday monday and tuesday and dont mind poeple who stutter
#find-a-game , dont advertise here. Thank you🥰
sorry
hey Amity you here?
shes my curren dm
I’m here
havent seen you in a while
Then once you know how you can go to #looking-for-dm and post your ad
Aww that’s sweet. But anyway enough about me
Welcome. As Alfiz said, you can read through the instructions in #find-a-game for more information about how to find a game. That being said, just to help you set some expectations, I think it will be extremely difficult to find a DM that’s willing to play 3 days a week. Especially 3 days back-to-back. D&D takes a lot of time to prepare, so the DM typically needs at least a few days in between each session. Most commonly, people play once a week
i meant was i can play on either of those days
I see. Well, if you make an advertisement post in the proper channel, you’ll want to word that as “Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday” instead of saying “and”
yeah sorry about that my grammar typing kinda sucks when its casual talking
No worries. I’m just trying to help you out for the future. It might make people hesitant to respond if they think you want the DM to be free all 3 of those days
fair
Interesting how the idea of DnD having a Gunslinger class was brought up twice here
Think one should look at Pathfinder instead if one wants a literal Gunslinger class
Or reflavor ranged combat to feel like using guns I dunno
Lets try to keep the discussion focused on D&D. Discussing other systems is concidered to be off topic for this server
Firearms are a part of D&D. Pistol and Musket are both listed adventuring gear in the PHB, and the DMG has additional options that a DM can add at their digression
Not usually? But the more you do it, the faster it goes
not really it depends on what level you start on
Don't know why ski club has anything to do with D&D
skl=school
if you start on a high level you have alot to add in but if you start on a low level then its easy
i see ty
the hardest part is back story
Keep it around 150 words personally
I recommend checking out the first 2 chapters of the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
They cover the core game mechanics/game flow and how to create a character, step by step
For backstories I suggest a 3 bullet point version:
- Where in the world/setting does your character come from (work with DM to identify a good location that makes sense).
- What did your character do before becoming an adventurer?
- How/why did your character end up adventuring? (work with DM to make sure it works and fits in their game).
Eventually you get the hang of it

razor why does this keep happening
Two folks running the command at the same time
well look at the bot post above for the free rules
I think it's less "How logistically does this happen?" and more "How do we consistently manage to do the same thing at the same time?".
But yes, how to play is in the rules and #learn-to-play!
Ok thx
Hello
hi!
Hi
How is everyone
good
Good, prepping for our home game
how are you (textbook english conversation goes on)
That's good
I'm doing alright
Wassup! so I read the directions but still don’t get how to put up a post can anyone help me out? I would appreciate it
Type /looking-for then select from one of the choices that Discord pops up. The bot will then give you a form to fill out. After submitting the form the bot will create the post in the specified channel and attach a thread to it. Use the thread to provide updates, clarifications, or communicate with folks.
Planning my first campaign rn. Where do I even start?
#dm-discussion would be the better channel for that question!
Do I just type it in any chat?
Yes anywhere here on the server you can type in
Ok thanks allot
Read the free Basic Rules. It has a DM section as well.
Whats the difference between chromatic and metallic dragons
normally? evil and good
Which are good
metallic
Alright thanks
What’s that race that looks like an ant?
Formian iirc
Thanks
Thri-Kreen
Oh ok
Formian is not a playable species in 5e
oh i thought they meant general
yeah toy mean thri-kreen then
How to play around a party member who is extremely racist to your species ?
Have a talk with them, that isn’t something standard.
Hello everyone! I am super new to actual DnD and I was hoping to see if anyone could help me learn it. I also don't have a party and I'm not quite sure how to join one

I highly recommend giving the free basic rules a good look over - particularly chapters 1 and 2 which cover the core game play mechanics and how to create a character.
Hey how’s everyone
Hi
Hi
Evening y’all. Let us know if you have questions
Hello quick one does the paladin have immunity to diseases in the 2024 phb i feel like I've seen it somewhere but can't find it
?tag new paladin
Paladin
Smite foes and shield allies with divine and martial might
Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.

Thank you
a dangerous goal to have... what did you do? and why did you want to annoy them?
NuggetN it worked
And here I thought the goal of games like D&D was to have fun together...
i made everyone in my party play bard
(Mods before you panic it’s friendly banter)
A group of us already barraged them with questions when they first mentioned it
They said something along the lines of
“How do I annoy my dm?”
And three DMs pounced
I do truly hope this wasn’t a serious campaign tho
i most absolty was
sadly no
Shame
Me included
but we seduced like 5 dragons
Helll yeaaa
im thinking of playing a variant human fighter
Nice choice, what subclass and starting feat?
i dont have a sub class but i have great wepon fighting and savage Attacker as feats
Cool
im thinking of geting the feature rustic hospitality but im not sure if its good
Quite situational
like what situations
Like if your party is on the run from the law for some reason
Or if your party can’t usually find shelter in an area for some reason
ohhhhhhhhhhh thats going to be very helpfull considering the war crimes we call fun
Assuming you’re not infamous criminals, you won’t see it being used all too often
You had me at war crimes
Let's be careful folks to not diminish the real impact of war crimes in the real world
Please keep things appropriate with server rules
Sorry…
I got a question.
Go for it.
Even though I am not a dm, am I allowed to use the looking for players command?
I would think so, but a mod would be able to weigh in better. If you don't get an answer here, #moderator-support would be where to ask.
Are you at a table with a DM who is looking for players? Because otherwise, you're going to mislead a lot of people who would expect a game
please note, we also don't allow players to post for a DM who also posts here
Yes, I am. My friend is making a homebrew campaign and when I sent the server link to him it said invalid invite.
He's not in the server but I am, so I might as well ask that question before I do anything else.
@hoaqin
https://discord.com/invite/8zQa7jq9vS try this one?
Alright, I shot him the invite he hasn't responded.
Hello!
Welcome!
Evening let us know if ye have any questions
Do +(number) bonuses stack on weapons? Like pact of the blade with magic weapon or artificers infusion?
No - effects of the same type don't stack normally (leaving room here for anything that specifically states it allows stacking).
But yes, usually effects of the same type do not stack.

Welcome! The above bot embed has useful links/resources to help get you started with D&D including the free basic D&D rules
I'd suggest checking out the first 2 chapters as they cover the gameplay mechanics and how to create a character sheet.
Yay thanks! I'll read it. Seems to be packed with a lot of information!
Indeed! Don't feel like you need to memorize it but getting used to where to look things up and general terminology, game mechanics, and how a character sheet works will be very helpful!
Sup yall
Wazzup. You need anything we can help you with?
Or just saying hi?
Not currently
yeah js saying hi
Yo what's up guys, I just joined the server. I'm quite new to DnD stuff and know little. I was hoping that someone would be able to help teach me how to DM. I understand the basic idea of the game and have some understanding of how to DM but I would love and appreciate any help. I'm currently working on building a campaign as the DM based on a world set into the One Piece anime universe. I'm not copying the story line at all just using the rules and world knowledge of that anime. I've already built out a little bit of an idea so I would appreciate any and all feedback on that as well. DM me if you are willing to help!

Feel free to ask specific questions as you run across them.
As far as DM help, check in with folks in #dm-discussion (and check the pinned messages there for useful resources/tips)
Can you have more than one fighting style
Yes if you get another feature that gives you one
The Champion subclass of Fighter, for example, gets another Fighting Style feat as their level 7 feature
Assuming you've never GMed before, run short modules and premade one shots first. Start building your own campaign once you've gotten a couple of sessions under your belt.
hi
Hello, how can I help you? Please feel free to complete your conversation in another channel first before coming to me.
Hey newbie here looking for a chill group to play with and have fun, cracking up and raiding dungeons

If not go to #learn-to-play
Are you familiar with the basic rules yet?
Hi

Hi, I’m still new. Are you still nugget by chance?
Just want to say hi, if that’s okay. Saw you in chat
No problem. How are ya?
I’m doing okay, took a mental health break this week much needed. How are you?
That’s not great to hear, but glad you’re feeling better. I’m fine for the most part, just smt in another fandom happened but really alls fine.
Hope that situation was handled rather quickly man
It’s not really smt that can be resolved, but thanks anyway.
Remind me, have you found a game yet?
i have not. i haven't been actively searching. i am really busy lately
Hail thee of might and valor!

Yeah it's quite a lot! But no need to imbibe everything right away. Even experienced players regularly look things up. Take it one step at a time. Starting with building a character may be a good initial step.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat, as well as common terms.
Start with the player section of the basic rules. It's all you need to start playing.
And feel free to ask us for any specific questions!
What ways are their to increase your Spell Save dc?
Increase your spellcasting modifier and level up to increase your PB
Magic items can do it too, but you can't count on these
Spellcasting modifier is a hard one since I already am at the second highest I can be and to top that I'd need two more intelligence points
Hmm
What ways are their to increase my intelligence specifically?
Some feats do it if I remember right
ASI's
Ability Score Improvement (ASI)
At certain levels, when you level up your character, you gain an Ability Score Improvement that gives you 2 points to add to any ability scores (so can add 1 point to one score and another point to a different score or you can add both points to a specific score), until that ability score hits it's maximum level of 20.
It isn't a formula - it's at certain levels. Check your class table as it will show at which levels you get an Ability Score Improvement: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes
Whenever you get a level up with an Ability Score Improvement, you get 2 points as noted previously.
Ok thanks!
Like, the formula for your Spell save DC is 8+proficiency bonus+spellcasting (in your case intelligence) modifier.
To find your intelligence modifier it’s
(INTELLIGENCE STAT-10)/2
Is that what you mean by formula? And btw you get the opportunity for ASI’s at level 4,8,12,16 and 19.
(For wizards)
Yea that's what I meant by formula like ecer 4 lvls in this case
Thanks
It's the same then as for feats right?
If your DM allows it, instead of taking an Ability Score Improvement, you can take a feat.
And in the 2024 rules, this is baked in.
