In combat, every person in the fight has an order of taking their turn. On your turn you have your action, bonus action, movement, and a free action? Some dms handle free actions differently.
Correct. It is further up that rage ends unless the Batbarian does something that extends it. Bonus action is one option to extend it.
As per the description, it lasts until the end of your next turn. Your move is only part of your turn. If you have fully moved but your turn has not ended, you can still use your Bonus action to extend it because it ending is not based on move.
You also have a reaction, which specifically are certain actions used not on your turn for the most part.
uhhhh
I forgot about free actions, but you wouldn't use that unless you were interacting with items
Aka, a Paladin switching out weaponry.
Or opening the door...
so in a fight if i use my sword in rage and someone defends thats not considered a full turn?
That evil, evil door that somehow every dnd party has difficulties with
how many dungeons should I map out before a campaign is "ready" for players?
i need to watch a YT video or something
You don't have to map out everything at once
Attacks can occur in many forms but the Attack Action is anAction that can be taken. As others have said, a turn is a number of different things. Any attack is just one piece of it.
the manual says half a dozen but i feel like that might not be enough
not neccesarily, but when the party enters a dungeon i need to know what it looks like
ok so is there a number of actions i can take in a turn or does it change with levels or something
my biggest nightmare is players going somewhere and i just have to say "sorry i didnt map that yet"
Oh, you mean rooms within a dungeon?
Well, is your next session a dungeon? How often are you planning to meet for games?
One Action, one Bonus Action, one movement allowance, one interact with environment, anx some time before your next turn, a Reaction. Each game element defines what Action economy is required to use it
It's just something I want to do
That's fair. But these are things to consider.
Instead of extra Actions, you usually get better or improved things you can do with the actions you do get. For example, the same Action can get multiple attacks as you level up and get stronger.
But take your time.
1
I mean that seems really low
What happens if they complete it and find another one
In one session? Impossible
Before the DM gets Hangry is usually advisable. 🙂
4 feels really nice
But again, if you need any further help, feel free to ask in #dm-discussion
(Mostly because I forgot we were in newcomers)
I'd say have a couple planned, if it makes you feel better. Most games dont consist of players sprinting dungeon to dungeon tho
Yours could however
It is a way to play
I do 4s usually but I run a number of 5s or 6s sessions. YMMV.
i see i see
Could take part in a one shot and see how it goes, since you're really new to DND
How we all doing?
hello!! just joined server and finally just throwing myself into a community instead of observing from afar lol. been wanting to play dnd for a good while now but just havent really had any opportunities to play or learn more- admittedly most of my knowledge is from playing hours of bg3 but ive done research into the actual tabletop experience ^_^ i plan on looking in the looking for players discussion soon but for now is there any other basic advice i should know when it comes to creating a character and playing with a group? would rather not embarrass myself in some way if i ever find a group :,)

hello there people, I need some help with understanding the rules of D&D and a character creation
I've come from BL2's TTAODK looking to find out more about the D&D comunity since the campaign of the DLC was fun to play and I want to look out for parties that can be as fun as the game itself
Tiny Tina 🤣 Of all the things to discover D&D through. That's incredible.
Welcome!
Just a little way up is a helpful bot post on how to get started with stuff.
thank you friend
ask away. im really good at reading a table of contents and pressing ctrl+c ctrl+v
Does anyone have any sites to make maps and dungeons? I want to start making a campaign but I have no artistic talent at all
Or maybe a site for dms with all the info on the site like I can create my campaign on the site and track everything on it?
Dungeonscrawl is a pretty easy and quick to use one yeah
super fast low effort map making
Thank you!
For campaign tracking, I use a notetaking tool like Notion.
Y'all making me feel inadequate, I often just scribble crap on a whiteboard 💀
world anvil is also pretty good for overall world maps but id stick to dungeonscrawl for now
For in-person games, absolutely.
Ok thank you I’m new to dnd but I want to make it engaging for my players!
dungeonscrawl 100%
Cool, also do you know any good already made campaigns to do while I make a campaign?
It's also recommended to grab a prewritten adventure, as those often provide maps as well as an adventure you don't have to spend tons of time coming up with.
yea premades are good too
Any of the Starter Set ones. Stormwreck Isle or Lost Mines of Phandelver
Would I find those on dnd beyond’s website or just do a google search for them?
beyond should have them
Well, both, and they're both paid.
Here's a list of free resources. Scroll down a bit and you'll see some free adventures:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
atleast in written form
Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn is probably the most fully featured one, so check that out.
Thanks so much!!!
The most straightforward subclass also happens to be the one in the free rules: Hunter
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Hunter
It's great for combat in particular.
On the more complex side, I'm partial to Beast Master in the 2024 rules.
Thank you
Hi i'm new to dnd I made my character and just created a charater with D&D beyond, how do I actually start playing online cause well my offline friends are not interested

I'm playing a 12 lv campaign in Greyhawk. Debating on whether it'd be viable to multiclass a Eldritch Knight into paladin for access to smites?
this bot post will contain the information you're looking for
I've been in a single campaign before but we stopped that a good while ago, it was a jjk themed campaign and was very loosely based on the rulebook
thanks!
Ah ok, that's more than just the basics of how to play, so you'll want to hop over to #character-discussion for more detailed advice
Yeah, this is the first time I'm playing DnD that's not in CRPG format.
Thanks!

is it hard to play when english is not your first language?
It's probably harder but it's still doable
You could also check if you're one of the languages that does have a translation, though there's not many of them
But I've played with plenty of people who's first language wasn't English over the years
Yo, making a character for dnd but wanted to ask some questions. Does team comp matter?
Like my friends are druid, fighter and ranger (2 humans one elf) and I was deciding if I should do rogue or barbarian and dragonborne and half orc, since they seem the coolest to me, any opinions?
Class comp can matter a little since you may be missing certain abilities. But in my experience, you can make any combo work with some cleverness as long as the DM doesn't lock you into needing certain spells or the like
Species can really be anything
Your current party is missing any kind of arcane caster, so the DM would need to make sure they don't lock the plot behind a spell no one has
I see, but for species doesn't it give points like extra strength which helps with some classes?
If you're using 2014 rules, ask your DM if you can use the optional rule to put your stat bonuses wherever you want instead
2024 rules, the bonus comes from your background not your species
But even with locked stats, all that does is make some species a little more suited to some classes. It doesn't really affect the party as a whole
Im doing 2014 rules but my friend is the only one in contact with the dm, should I ask him to ask the dm about that? Also the dm said he is going to review the character sheets once we send them in so should I wait after that or ask before?
Ask before since that's part of building your character
Okay 👍
Welcome to D&D!
Your 1st time playing is a level 12 campaign? Interesting
They may mean 1-12
My first campaign webt from 3-16
Since they said 12 lv, not lvl 12
It was fast tracked but still lvl 16 was crazy
I mean it ends at lv 12.
Not that we're starting with lv 12 characters.
Ok idk why I thought they were saying they were starting at lvl 12
My campaigns are slooooowwww progression. If im DMing anyways.
We were in high school and barely had time to actually play
Maybe 3 hours twice aweek
Three hours twice a week is a lot more than most people get! Most groups meet once a week, but I know some only meet once a month
My current games started in 2021 and we play for four hours every week. Long form works for us but not for everyone.
6 hours a week is okay
Ask your question!
#character-discussion might be a better channel for full character creation but if you just have a few questions fire away
Tx
Is dnd a very complicated game
That's true!
Thankfully, it's rare to need to understand everything all at once. Better to focus on understanding the things you'll need immediately, rather than trying to be all-knowing.
dnd is not the most complex game out there but its not "rules light" either
but you dont need to know all the rules to play
Not really complicated. Just a lot
I am just getting into D&D, I picked up the Handbook and the Monster Manual, also a seas and shores preprinted miniature box
Nice
6 hours a week is above average
For one group for sure
For the most part, people get guided along to make their characters and are given a base understanding of common rules, whereas the rest is casually reminded mid-play. It’s common to pause and check rules.
Hi am looking for a DM for me two have my first game and to help me learn
How does spending 10 minutes seaching with a roll to achieve something work? Like do they skip some amount of turns? I don't know how time works in dnd is very confusing
A round is 6 seconds
If you're in combat you count 6 seconds every round. If you're out of combat you typically time skip such things unless the dm chooses to procc an encounter

Hi
Hello. Let us know if you have any questions
?tag new online
The article above will explain a little more about how to play online. When you play online, a lot of groups like to use digital battle maps to help represent what’s happening in combat. Those will be quite hard to use on mobile. But you might be able to find a group that doesn’t use maps like that. It’s rare, but not impossible
Ok thanks
Hello!
Tomorrow I’m playing my very first one-shot, followed by a small campaign, and I’m a bit nervous. It’s my first time trying out RPGs, so I’m afraid I won’t feel comfortable, that I’ll make mistakes, or won’t be “good enough”, a bit worried about disappointing the GM or the other players, especially if they’re more experienced or confident than I am. I really want things to go well, but I’m having a hard time relaxing. Do you have any advice to help me feel more confident and enjoy the game?
- Breathe
- It's okay to make mistakes
- If you're not sure what to say you can let other people talk first and then try to build off that
- Know the types of dice. It'll make things easier
I already got around of the game works, but not how the set works ( roll20 or foundry ) but I’ll try my best
Thanks so much for the advice! I’ll try to focus on breathing and staying relaxed. I’ll also make sure to get familiar with the dice system more. Thanks again!
I mostly suggest knowing the dice because if you ask what to do, you'll often get answers like "okay so roll a d8 for your weapon"
So it helps to know which die that is
That’s the kind of thing I want to avoid, the DM having to repeat things I don’t know throughout the game
It’ll be too much uncomfortable to me
A little bit of that is fine imo. Especially if they know you're new. Just try not to make them explain the same thing too often and it'll be fine
Basic d20 rolls and your character abilities are good things to focus on.
But I spent a year and a half reminding someone to use sneak attack so regardless it's not the end of the world.
Thanks, really !
@dusky flint we were all new players at one time and we did make plenty of mistakes but we learn from them
Sometimes we still make mistakes
I think these are things you can’t avoid
Even the DM doesn’t know the entire game or every detail it has
You are right about that
I’ll try my best, and try not to stress too much
And enjoy the game rather than being anxious while playing
That’s how it should be
I’ll go to sleep now, or I’ll miss my OS.. good night everyone, thanks again !
You’re welcome and good luck with your games tomorrow

HP depends on the hit dice of what class each person is playing as.
The full rules on gaining HP can be found here for HP at level 1 and here for HP when leveling up.
In essence, whenever you level up and choose to roll for HP you gain HP equal to 1 roll of your hit die (determined by class) + your con modifier.
If your con modifier ever increases, your HP increases retroactively as if you always had that higher con mod
thank you!

Hiii
Is there an android app possibly, to track combat? Not necessarily a character creation app, but just a combat tracker / calculator? So things like temp HP, damage, buffs, advantage, status effects etc. death saving throws
Gm toolkit maybe?
Its pretty good overall
Its got a lot of generation so maybe not hmm
Maybe any of the dnd combat trackers
Like fight club 5e? Would that work?
I just want something to track current HPs statuses etc faster and easier rather than writing and erasing numbers constantly on my sheet
Try DND combat tracker i havent used it much but its pretty good
Owlbear Rodeo has a great combat tracker and I don’t like saying this but Roll20 has it as well
I’m just not a big fan of Roll20
They need one for android for tabletop i figure so roll20 wouldnt bebtoo convenient
I only use roll20 lmao dont like other vtt
Vtts*
That’s why they suck
Fair enough
Owlbear Rodeo is free and it’s great for everything
If you just use it to track roll20 is too if you play on it the subscription is nice
Owlbear is simpler than roll20, and extensions (like dynamic fog) are... free
so IMO owlbear is an easier foot in the door for newcomers. Remarkably simple, and easy to run. Least intimidation.
So uhh, im like completely new to dnd, ive always wanted to play but my dad doesnt like it, is anyone down to teach me
What apps do I download for D&D?
There are apps?
Not exactly anything much to download, you could go for the DNDBeyond digital toolset if you wanted but otherwise it still is a TTRPG. At its core, it could be played with just pencils paper and dice and the books.
So, typically, any apps are to facilitate doing those, like a note-taking app (Obsidian is good for making 'conspiracy boards' of connected notes, Fantasy Calendar is good for... making a fantasy calendar), VTT (I'm partial to the simple and low-intensity Owlbear Rodeo), method of communication (Discord is a common choice), character sheets (DNDBeyond is mostly a character sheet and book compendium toolset, certain sites can do more freeform sheets or otherwise)
Played out Balders Gate 3 and had my first session a month ago irl, only got one real question.
As the party tank what are things I should not make my DM angry about?
Depends on the DM. I'd just be open with what you want to do and be open to change those plans if it's not fitting for the theme and expectations of the game you're playing in.
If I have a tool kit that I am not proficient with, what are the limitations of using it. Especially that some (cook utensils) seem far more accessible than others (thieves' tools)
I don’t know if this is the place for OC questions but am I aloud to have a vampire oc? Or is it based off the DM
I think it largely depends on the DM, he decides what fits and doesn't with his world and the kind of story he's telling
You can express why you think this would work but the final call is his
The closest you're likely to get to that is a species/lineage/race called dhampirs.
This is an official option if the DM uses the expanded ruleset presented in Van Richtens Guide to Ravenloft.
Ok
There aren't many limitations iirc. Proficiency in a tool just gives you the pb bonus to any ability checks you make that involve that tool.
For instance, if you wanted to detect poisoned food with the Cook's Utensils, a Wisdom check isrequired for that. If you're proficient in the tools, you add your pb.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#CooksUtensils1GP
Im in the process of making my very first character. Is there any recommened class for 'your very first' one? (Beside that, is Milestone or XP Progression the better pick?)
XP or Milestone depends entirely on the game and the DM, so neither is "better" as a player. Pick one if making a character as practise, but you should be able to switch it if needed
And the best class is the one that interests you the most, or the one you want to play and so have the interest in learning it, but none are outright difficult to figure out 😎
Altho a nice class to start with if you wanna learn the basics would be martial classes imo
Barbarian, Monk, and Rogue are my go to when introducing people to dnd
If it's a spellcasting class either sorcerer or bard (I tend to avoid druid due to wildshape cr being kinda overwhelming to keep track of imo)
So I don't usually pay any mind to google's ai summaries on searches, but for some reason it's convinced that many people use lego figures to play dnd. Is this true at all? There's no source for the claim. Maybe the ai is just hallucinating as usual.
I thought people used painted minifigures.
Minis are fairly recent I remember people playing RPGs With Legos When I was a kid
So...it asks me to pick traits for the Monk...holy shi-
Oh, that's the first time I've heard of it. Must be because I'm getting into it now. Well, I'll compliment the AI for getting it right then.
Age might matter too you might not know that there were very few minis back then if you're too young
Legos do kinda make sense, though. I hadn't considered that you can make whole dungeons layouts with them. You could probably play a whole campaign with just legos and paper.
Yes lots of castle , boats and everything you need
I was into warhammer when I was younger, so I kinda just assumed people were using similar stuff to play dnd haha. Legos do seem like a smart solution though.
Is it too ambitious to want to run an investigation/surnatural mystery as a first step into DND as a dm ? ( I will dm for a party of total newcomers and plan on keeping the game rule simple to start with but they already want to play some weird characters lol someone wants to be a grung barbarian )
Which Traits should i pick for a Monk? Or is that rather random and unimportant?
What I mean by that is that they would be sent to an abandoned manor where people who buy the place and family relative of the old owner who try to go there die and people have to uncover the mystery by exploring the whole place
For your abilities you should focus on both dex and wisdom
It asks me to add 'Core Traits' like 'Religion', or 'Insight' and so on...
Oh traits, those are skill checks, honestly that's for flavor. Is ur monk insightful are they religious etc. it depends on who the character is
Those are what the game calls skills. I assume it's asking you to pick skill proficiencies. Insight, Perception, and Acrobatics are all good choices for monks.
I'd pick the starting gear listed here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Monk
As for instrument proficienciy, that's really just a roleplay decision.
So many Artisan Tools :v
Late here, but tie-ins have happened: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1685-the-lego-group-and-d-d-partner-for-a-dungeons
Also if you have access to Lego for an in-person game, it's a way to get terrain, dungeons, buildings and other features laid out without having to spend more for scenery sets and minis.
Oh hey, the rest of the channel just loaded. Thanks Discord.
I actually really like the idea of using legos or some other modular building method.
At the very least, people frequently talk about how it could be a fun idea. I've never done it myself though.
If you just have a ton of bricks, you can very easily make maps with virtually no mess. I like the not having to glue or paint aspect of it.
Especially now that I live in a small apartment lol
Makes me wish dnd had a similar thing, actually.
Like a properly scaled building set that didn't have the lego aesthetic.

Would you guys recommend reading these rules before I read the DM and player's handbooks?
The Player's Handbook contains the core rules of the game, so that'd be where to start reading, whether you're a player or a DM!
Awesome, thank you! :D
If either of you are getting angry, either or both of you are misbehaving. Nothing in D&D should make people angry. If this is happening, you need to discuss the situation and if necessary, find a new group. Even no D&D is better than bad D&D and angry D&D is 💯 bad D&D.
If you want your DM to not dislike your choices, there is no general answer other than communicate. Tell them what you would like to do or are planning and work together to get there.
I have no discussions in my group and i don’t correct other people there build.
For my DM, he is fully aware of the build I’m making and I’m crystal clear with him.
Then you're good. Anything you select should be acceptable to your DM.
tanking in 5e in isnt very well supported as there are very little aggro mechanics, not to say that protecting your allies is impossible, its just "big guy with a weapon" isnt the best way to do that
I love D&D but I don't know how to play. Deym

Basic rule book is a good place to start
Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Honestly baldirs gate 3 is also a good place to start
yes, i love drinking potions of speed mid fight
That's a computer/video game loosely based on 5e D&D rules but is not really D&D the TTRPG
Also watching videos on YouTube about DnD is great for learning as well
I'd say Baldurs Gate 3 is a great way to get excited about D&D conceptually but not really a good way to learn how the actual Tabletop RPG game actually works.
Bg3 teaches the basics pretty well imo. Gives avery tactile representstion of bein a player
Ah okay - yeah I can see that.
Not to learn hard rules. But to undersrand how at a basic level
it also gives you unrealistic expectations
How so?
I did thanks, but still confusing 😅
consistent party for starters
If you have questions this is the place to ask
If you've got any specific questions, we can certainly answer them here
Making a practice character is a great first step
Character creation section of the players hand book
Just be aware that until you find a group, you're not guaranteed to be able to play that character specifically. Your DM has to approve any character you make, so they might have some restrictions you weren't expecting
This is why we call it a 'Practice Character'
Btw I don't have anything like guide book etc. It's too expensive for me 😅
No problem, the basic rules are free:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Well, don't worry! We've actually linked the free rules book above
D&d beyond has the phb for free
The Player's Handbook has a few extra options that the basic rules don't include, but the basic rules have everything you need to play.
Cool thank you so much ❤️
After I created a character what's next?
Nothing. You need a table to actually play
After getting a basic understanding of the rules and making a practice character, the next step is finding a group
You can begin your search for a group on this server by following the instructions in #find-a-game
I mean I already had OC as an artist all of my artwork is about D&D but sadly never been played that before
You've got plenty of characters to try making then🫡
Can I play it online?
Yes
Yup ! Haha 😆
Just remember that when making a character in DnD, you're picking from a list of options that give you skills and abilities. DnD isn't a game where you can put your OC in and expect them to be represented 100% correctly.
Dndbeyond is typically where most online campaigns are run. But you need to find actual people to play with
No wait
And how can I level up my character. How does it works? 🤔
Roll20
Noted! 🫡
Yeah I already saw it on fb
As you and your party play through your dungeon master's campaign you reach milestones or gain exp points. Once you reach that point, head to the level advancemet section ohmf the rule book and do the level up process lisged for your class. Aswell as, add the new features that are given at that level from your class
@harsh fjord I did but still learning 😊
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at level 1 and advances in level by adventuring. With each new level, characters acquire new capabilities that equip them to handle greater challenges.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. As they overcome challenges and complete adventures, characters earn Experience Points (XP), which are awarded by the Dungeon Master. The Character Advancement table lists the XP you need to advance to a level
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
Your DM might start your group’s characters at a level higher than 1. A DM can also use feats as a form of advancement after characters reach level 20 to provide greater power to characters who have no more levels to gain.
Just slow
The bot post above explains things in a little bit simpler terms than the rulebook. Hopefully this helps
Thanks for that 😉
I see I see 😆
What about when my character died what will happen? 🤔 Was it possible?
They ded
Hello
There are ways to bring them back to life but typically they are dead permanently
If your character dies, there's a chance your friends can resurrect you if they are a high enough level and have the appropriate items. If not... then you're dead! You'll have to make a new character. This new character will rejoin the party shortly after where you left off.
Welcome!
Deeeeym 😲
Thanks u all for the advice! I really appreciate that 🫡

I wanna roll a 20 for rizz is this allowed
Ask your DM
But also please be mindful of the server rules - some topics are not appropriate here on this all-ages server.
Finally finished making my first character, but what now...?
You know the rules?
Uh, im reading through them rn
Once you know how to make a character and have a decent grasp of the basics, you find a group. Read #find-a-game for info on using the server's channels for that.
Well, since the character is done, i just need to learn how to play with it, before looking for a DM...
Sounds like a good plan! If you have any specific questions about how the rules work, we'll be happy to answer them here.
You can try running a small encounter by yourself. Kinda like a test dummy situation for your character
Although i would recommend just finding a dm and learning as you play
As i started to read, my brain stopped braining 😄
While getting some actual hands-on experience helps a lot, I think it's important to actually go through the rules before finding a DM. It's a bit rude to presume a game can facilitate a person who has avoided reading anything, and a surprising number of new players are very adverse to reading.
You don't even have to read the entire book, if you don't wanna play wizard no one will force you to read about em
Hey, y'all
Howdy
Im just reading through the 'Playing the Game' Chapter
Yes, #find-a-game
Read playing game and your class page
Out of curiosity, did you build your character sheet before reading through the chapter on how to build character? If so, you likely will need to go back and make some changes as you get a better understanding of how to create a character while following the rules
I first read through, then made the Sheet on DnD Beyond...
Ah good, then you're probably set on that part
Would be weird if i did it the other way around, wouldn't it?
You might be surprised how many new players try to make a character without reading anything at all!
I'd estimate we get at least 1 or 2 a day who come to this chat
Hello 🤗
Can anyone help me with casting spells using Arvae? I have the character all set up and registered, but I can't remember the command (I'm trying to cast Acid Arrow)
Check out #ddb-avrae-help for help with Arvae 🙂
Would you recommend reading the entire player's handbook before trying to DM or would you recommend learning as you go? So I skim through the basics and try to DM and figure stuff out on the fly
Hi nixie.
You don't need to do a detailed read through everything, but as the DM it's recommended to have a basic understanding of most of the sections. Most importantly is understanding where to find everything, so that if you can't remember or aren't sure, you can look it up on the fly.
If you're learning how to be a DM, then yeah you have a little more of a responability to familiarize yourself with the rules. You don't need to memorize everything, but you should at least have a passing familiarity with everything so you can look it up later if you need to
I wouldn't at all recommend trying to DM without taking your time. DMing unfortunately does require a commitment of your time to study.
Sounds good! Also, how important is the DM's handbook? From what I've seen it seems to cover more advanced topics like creating your own adventures and running those
The Dungeon Master's Guide is definitely a fantastic resource for new DMs. It's not necessary, but if you're committed to playing the game long term and have the money, it's certainly a good buy.
That being said, you could theoretically DM perfectly fine even just using the free basic rules.
I actually got the 3 book set as a gift! The Player's guide, DM's guide and monster manual :D
If you've already got it, then great! Absolutely worth your time to look though.
It is quite useful to refer to when you will be doing specific things. Like good to read, Running Combat for when you will inevitably run a combat. Creating a Monster, not relevant if you are not doing that.
They're the 2014 edition though. Would that cause issues if someone is using the 2024 edition?
Alrighty, thank you for the advice :D
Typically, you have to pick which version of the rules you’re using before you start playing. And your whole group can only use 1 rule set. You can’t have one player using the 2014 base rules while another uses the 2024 base rules.
The 2014 rules and the current 2024 rules are different, unfortunately. If you're planning on running the 2014 rules, you'll want all your players to be using those rules.
Ah alright, I'll specify it when I start looking for a group then. Thank you!
Just one last thing to clarify:
I should go through the player's handbook first and then the DM's handbook, right? Should I also go through the monster manual or is that something for way later?
The players handbook is definitely the best place to start. Then the DMG. The Monster Manual isn’t really a “rule book” in the same way as the other two. It’s just a list of monsters you can use. You don’t typically read that book cover to cover, but rather look up specific monsters when you want to use them.
Personally, yes, the DMG builds off the PH in places.
Got it, thank you very much!
Oh and, I have the starter set too. Do I need any dice apart from the ones they gave? I have a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20
Those are the only ones you need, though you may want to purchase more in the future. There are many times when the game will ask you to roll two or more of the same type of dice at the same time. If you only own one of each, you’ll just have to remember the numbers you roll and do it over and over again to add them all up
You can run with just those.
Some of us are dice addicts though and want to own all the dice. 🙂
And what Colossus said. More dice can make rolling faster.
Yeah, need more dice, no. Want more dice, inevitably
There's a particular satisfaction to rolling 10d8 at once
7th level Cone of Cold, Pre nerf CME. 🙂
Nope, my favorite DM spell, Chain Lightning 🌩️
Though I have been known to upcast Cone of Cold. Depends on whether I'm after the rogues or not
coolest spells are bigbys hand and otilukes resilient sphere...
Worst one-shot of my life.
Well, the DM was cool and the players were nice, but as a Bard, I didn’t manage to get a word in.
The others were super comfortable and I was just like, “uh… okay…” the whole time.
And now for tomorrow’s skirmish, I thought the DM was running a pre-made campaign since he had to pick it up from someone else.
I wasn’t happy with my first character, so I asked if I could switch, but he thought I was being a bit of a pain, since he had already written the scenario and re-coded everything.
(I didn’t even know how it all worked, I'm new in this world…)
But that wasnt my objective, I thought you just put the character sheet and then, magic, I even said that if it wasnt alright i could keep my druid
Sorry you had a rough time. Being comfortable will get better with practice though

Welcome. The bot post above has information about how to find a group to join
I don't know which to start with😭
How do you mean?
Like for a newcomer wanting to try experiencing a DND campaign but I don't know which of the following categories to search on the bot
If that makes sense
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
My learned colleague @harsh fjord also has a bigger list of options linked in their Discord bio.
Awesome thank you

Alright tyy
Hi! My friends and I want to start an online dnd campaign but none of us can dm. Any advice?
Why can't any of you DM?
One of you doing it would 100% be the fastest and easiest way to make that happen
None of us are creative enough and we all only have experience as players
You don't have to be creative to DM. There are plenty of premade adventures available
Some do. But you can search sites like DMsGuild to only show free or pay what you want options
You can try posting in #looking-for-dm but there aren't that many people willing to take on an entire pre-existing group, and there's a lot of competition due to the fact that there's a lot more players than DMs
There are free ones available, but there are also ones that you’d need to purchase, or access through some other legal means such as renting them form a library
If i did looking for dm would I have to pay them?
Here only #paid-looking-for-game is paid games
But there's no guarantee who would reach out to you or not
Paid games do exist, but we have them separated into their own channel in this server. All of the games in #looking-for-players will be free
Ok thanks!
Could someone help me with being able to open up more and get comfortable with rp not sure why i get so Silent. Any good tips ?
Dont worry about having to come up with different voices and mannerisms for your characters. Start by talking and acting as you would normally
Could try talking about your character in third person. Some people have an easier time being descriptive that way.
You can try to write a short story about your character written in their POV so you know how to talk and act like them! And a tips I've got from an experienced Roleplayer is to know what kind of person your character is so you can assimilate into them more. You can try like listening to what music they'd listen to, what kind of book they'd read, or in a simpler term you can just search a fictional character that's similar with your character in terms of personality and try to follow their speech mannerism
Or usually the main reason is people are just shy in voice call (like I was!) so it'd be better if you get yourself comfortable and confident talking in voice chat first~
My current one is a religious zealot but i dont really know how to fully translate my 40k rp into dnd its quiet hard
w-what's a 40k
Warhammer 40k 😄
Pick a god, be fanatical. Done
I accidentally acted like a crazy johavas witness XD my group laughed so it kinda worked xD?

HI tech

Can someone help me understand how to read power cards?
Power cards?
The cards that you use during combat, they display attack info
Could you link to an example? I'm unfamiliar.
I think these are a 4e thing, I only remember them in that edition and all I can findin a google search
What is this channel about? I'm very new to this
This is where folks can ask questions about the basics of D&D.
I like dragons and I like dungeons am I on the right path?
I think so!
Power cards are a mechanic from D&D 4e. The current version of the game is 5e, so these are no longer used. If you are interested in 4e, or any other older versions of the game, you can discuss them in #dnd-elder-editions but the rest of this server is for 5e only
Yeah it's 4e
Assuming the Power Cards you are talking about are a 4e thing, you can find people knowledgeable on that at #dnd-elder-editions
seems like it lol
Yeah I have no clue what power cards are I am SO new to this

You can follow the above links for an introduction to what DnD is
They are old version stuff that you don't need to worry about lol
You don’t have to worry about that. Like I just said, they aren’t part of the game anymore
and yes follow those links and then if u have questions ask away
Is the 5e like a new version of the game like Warhammer 40k 10th edition?
Yes
Though DnD editions tend to be more different between each other
(Also 5e is split between 2014 and 2024)
Yeah basically. The analogy I always use is Smash Brothers. Think of 5e like Smash Ultimate. It’s the most recent edition of the game, but some people still like to play the older editions (like melee) because they still enjoy them
How do different races and classes work?
They're described in the rules. It's hard to summarize them without pointing you to the text.
Race will affect a few starting traits, while classes are very important and will affect your capabilities and progression
What in the world is encumbrance?
Carrying too much weight, in short.
Fighter, ranger, and rogue can all make good archers
There are a few that make great ranged backline classes
what OT said and also wizards sorcerers and bards make great back line spell casters who tend to be ranged
What are "simple or martial weapons" and why can I choose 3
All weapons are divided into those two types, your class will determine what weapons you can use effectively (martial are better than simple). Not to sound rude, but some of your questions are answered in the core rule book.
Yeah I believe that I just haven't found it yet
Simple weapons are stuff that wouldn't require a great deal to use, while martial weapons are like weapons that need training to use.
So Longswords, Greataxes, or Greatswords would be martial because they require some form of training to use effectively
You should probably read through the basic rules before going through character creation. If you can “choose 3” I’m guessing you’re using some sort of character creation app, right?
Yeah, so start with the basic rules before you jump into the character creator
Im creating a warlocke character right now and im a little confused on the expanded spell list that comes with the pact. Can you learn the first spell within the list immediately, or do you have to learn a new spell during a session first?
The expanded spell list is a set of spells that you can learn from or have prepared.
Yeah but when do you get to learn them
The expanded spell list simply adds to the Warlock spell list. You learn it's spells no different from other spells
Gotcha, thank ya
Whatever level the table says you can learn it at
Just was wondering if I could choose from that list in the first 2 spells it lets you choose upon character creation
What pact are you looking at?
Fiend
Yeah you can choose from that list
Alright, thx. It was a little unclear cause when it said I could choose 2 spells, it only said from the warlocke list
So for fiend you can choose to learn burning hands or command
The logic behind pact spells is that they are added to the Warlock list
The Fiend 2024 table of expanded spells specifies what level you could get particular spells at. If you start at that level, then sure, you can use them for character creation.
That helps
Oh my god DND is complicated
If you consume it all at once, seemingly so, but to me it seems more like you should focus on chunks at a time as a player
Don't worry, take it slow. A majority of the rules you don't need to learn
Like, sure you could learn all the class rules and stuff, but you only really need to learn the stuff you want to or can use for your current campaign

If I'd become a dm do I need to plan the whole adventure or can I make it up as the party goes wherever?
Thats a bit more complicated
Different camps of thought. Me, I tend to suggest planning the broad strokes but leaving a lot of blank space for things to go in whatever direction the party pulls.
There are many pre-made campaigns. If you want to first time DM I recommend checking out one of the starter campaigns on DnD beyond
For new DMs, it’s best to start with a single self contained adventure meant to be completed in a single session.
If you're a first time dm, you might wanna use a preset instead of attempting a full homebrew. Ive tried it before and it's very.. difficult to keep things on track
But generally, experience on how to run a game comes from actually doing it, so good luck ♡
I'm very divided on the player or dm thing I'm not sure which one would be better for me
You can do both, just not at the same time!
Both are very different
Its really just up to what you want long term
Story telling, or playing the game
I don't think you need to make that choice and stick with it indefinitely. I started as a player and became a DM later, and I still do both.
Can I cast not prepared spells outside of combat?
Depends on the class!
Exactly as razor said. I DM 6 campaigns and play in 2
Would you say command is better than burning hands?
Oh great! I have a few roleplay / non-combat spells that I'd like to use but I don't want to waste a preparation slot for those
Kudos. Mangaging one is tough enough for me!
cafe those 2 are so very different thats like comparing apples to cheese
Mmm
thanks Razor. i LOVE it and it is my only real hobby
Well one seems like general utility, and the other seems like a situation "get off me" spell, which is still useful
Artificer
I guess it really depends on what I already have
You need to have the spell prepared to cast it as an artificer.
😭 even outside of combat?
Btw I'm not sure if it means anything but from what I've heard from a friend it's good to have a small worm friend in your head as a player is it useful advice or just nonsense?
Whenever.
That's just a BG3 reference
(Baldurs Gate 3)
Hahaha you'll see
yeah 100% BG3 reference and NOT a normal thing in normal D&D. not to say it couldnt happen
It is pretty funny though
I want a funny little worm
that will be up to your DM Tech. but you never know lol
command is only good if you are the tank and want the buffest monster to focus on you, or some backstory motivated reason
I would assume it could be used for roleplay purposes if the dm allowed it
Like getting a troll to lift you to a high place or smthn
I have allowed it Cafe and in battle u can make people fall down (making them prone and therefore easier to hit.) make them drop their weapon. make them grovel, etc etc etc
Im using burning hands anyway cause im making a fire based warlocke, but it's still interesting to understand use cases
corright! So many ways to get creative in D&D SO. MANY. WAYS!
oh wait crap
😭 i was remembering the mechanics for compelled duel
Yeah that sounds more accurate to your description
whoops lol :/
lol u could use command to say DUEL and that may force the enemy to duel you
Oh yeah, im actually struggling a bit to get into a campaign. I thought maybe making a character first would act like a psuedo campaign resume lol
Is that like.. a bad idea? 😭
not at all. it is great practice
Hello there
I was already making a few throwaway characters just to figure out the process, oh and a few homebrew classes just to understand how those are put together too
Depends on the DM. Some might be a little concerned of a player wanting to play a specific character that may or may not fit the game. I'd be more interested in if the player knows the rules mainly and seems like a good tablemate.
I might have to do an extra skim over the rules again before starting though
:/ bru i have like 15-20 character ideas ready
all good if you make a character before a campaign
Ive skimmed over the player handbook like twice already just trying to get the feel for everything
But honestly the best way to learn is gonna be actually playing
u r far more ahead of most folks lol
yea skimming is how i learned everything also i read for pleasure so i would occasionally just read random chunks of the PHB
Cant wait to do it again with the DM handbook 🥰
have u posted in or looked through the channels by following #find-a-game ??

From my group with no experience i was the only one willing to dm so now im stuck:D cause om the only one willing to read
Dms posting stuff here seem to underestimate how many people want in, so they get bombarded with submissions, then dont respond to dms for days, and also dont close their threads
I never played dnd before
Its kinda frustrating
I'll be sure to save that
Felt that in my soul a little
That sounds like a good way if your group is cool with that
And I'm very creative so i mostly bounce off my players
my players tell my story more than I do lol
Dm'ing is all about using the rules to have fun
Lmao mine just ... Sit
HOWEVER its good to make sure the character fits the campaign. for example if you play an artificer, you need to check w your dm that that is ok bc some campaigns dont include guns and semi modern tech which is kinda the artificers whole thing
I put in #tales-from-the-table they spent 1 h over a child they were sus on from a village and from a 3h campaign turned into a 3 maybe 4 day one
You follow the rules how you want, build the world how you want. Dont get too overwhelmed if something doesnt work for your party
SO NORMAL Roxy!!!
I was laughing inside they thought they outsmarted me by arguing to kill him
Literally a defining experience for most DMs
one thing u will learn is opening a door is a 3 session ordeal but slughtering the evil bandits is 1/2 a session lol
(Exageration a bit lol)
Cant wait for those classic week long campaigns on a single dungeon
Do not use toddler puzzles
2 wanted to protect 2 to kill fun part when arguing ober who watches guard csuse the 2 girls were afraid the boys would kill the kid while they sleep
Noted
mmm nah i don’t remember this but according to my dm my party spent two hours trying to figure out how to get past an unlocked open door
I have a labyrinth set up
I'll just randomly make them roll and fall in different parts of it
I was ecagerating a bit lol. but yes silly stuff happens
Tbh better to assume a door is locked than to step into a trap
Very smart way honestly
The higher numbers the closer they are too existing but they wouldn't know where they are i just tell them
Otherwise you'd be explaining the fifteenth dead-end in a row
Came up with it at 2am while watching a video about smash mele
then again 80% of us have adhd autism or both so theres alot of us going on tangents that aren’t necessary and getting distracted
Nahahah
Mine got lost on an island they had the map to
PFT-
1 half elf tired putting a drink on the orcs tab because he wouldn't talk "said orc wanted to be misterios aparently i just rolled with it" and they almost killed each other before the elf realized he ahd enough gold to pay
hahahahhha
sounds like you are a great DM already
Bro wanted to make me think he had a lot of gold because he stole from a rich guy but i shut him down mf made me make his caracher
ONE OF US
I take thay compliment in high regard
Have you tried any pre-made stuff or are you a homebrew person?
WE WERE SUPPOSED TO PLAY AT 22:00 (time set by them) i made the campaign fast because only 4h till then and i had homework
And they weren't even prepared only 1 had a caracher
excuse me you made a campaign in 4h?
Yikes
We started playing way later
goddang
Its ok im a good writer
Alexander Hamilton, that you?
Who
im a terrible writer i despise english class and then theres also me whos come up w some banger backstorys
Wrote 51 essays defending the American constitution
I cant tell if eldritch invocations are just a thing from the old ones pact, or a general thing you can use
Just a mad man when it comes to writing fast
General thing you can use
I made one 2y after the eu industrial revolution 3 stages city capital of wjat we call Norway to get a feel for the game stage 2 water adventure and going on the island that's modern Iceland stsye 3 mystical mountain with pocket dimensions and magic beasts
I have notes but they are long and in lazy
eldritch invocations are a staple to ALL warlocks
Gotcha
All warlocks can use invocations. However certain invocations are locked behind prerequisites
I had the 3 kevels of the mountain the lore of the island and all
Oh dang
God dam he was a dedicated one
So if I already have eldritch blast, can I just.. also learn Agonizing Blast immediately?
Very dedicated
Not until 2nd level
Then you can take two I believe
My biggest problem, i can improv on the spot but i haven't finished the rules so idk how to properly implement bessts i just make them on the spot with damage around what my party can deal/handle idk other ways
I’m lost on how to find a campaign
It feels like the handbook isnt describing how to learn these
Made them using guides they just killed them too quickly without taking damage
All it says is the prerequisite is that I know eldritch blast
#looking-for-dm is a good place to start
Didnt give a level limit
Eldritch Invocations are gained through leveling up your warlock
That's vague
Ohhh
are you in 2014
I did that but like I didn’t receive any message or notification of my post
Jfjekwk im exited i want to eventually play too in a campaign:D only played 1 time short adventure the rest i had to dm , any tips?
bonk the monster it die you win
Where would I even check the date of the handbook
I'm not an expert on this stuff, so if you do have trouble, please ask a Mod
Uuuu
But usually it would because the dm hasn't responded yet
great advice ik
I want to play a cleric:D
Okay thanks for helping tho
Basically poket sage if u guys play valorant
Good question idk
there is actually a book for player advice and one on how to be a dm (specifically playing your monsters right to destroy your players)
What does sage do?
I started playing octopath trabaler and wanted to play cleric
Heal
Life domain are basically the healer path of cleric
Basically mercy from overwatch i think if u know that
Cause then you get access to a bunch of features that make healing just amazing
May i request you bestow me with the name of this fine scripture kind sir?
gimme a sec to dredge up the names from ma memory
Then that's what i want :D
But clerics in general can learn healing spells while being more martial focused
I'll make them beg and pay me for heal uwu
YES
Hold the power above their mortal heads
Isnt it just the dungeon masters handbook
Ill wear the mantle of the corrupt priest
Bloodborne healing church style
That's if i get to play lol
Lmao im not that messed up
Not really, it's good for general rules and running the game, but actually teaching of being a DM is near non-existant
Ive not actually seen how well playing while dm'ing actually goes
Boo I'm bored
However, the 2024 has some really nices tips
Hell on Earth
OK IT WOULD BE FUN TO HAVE A MECHANIC IF I HEAL THEM AND GET HIT UNDT HALF HEALTH OR DIE MAYBE IDK THEY GET DEALT SAID SAID % OF THE LIFE I HEALED
I'm praying to more gods every session
I don't blame you
Say i get hit 20/40 hp andi heal them for 10 they take 5 points of damage
Id assume if they made themselves the main character or something yeah lol
And it stacks till i get hit and they take damage or not and it resets
There will always be those characters, but I've gotten into a really good roll of DMing stuff in general

I've been doing a brand new Homebrew campaign based on a novel I was writing, and it's still in the works but it is a passion project of mine and I LOVE IT
Thank u
ur welcoms:3
Can i get a quick opinion on this^
I wanna know if im too mean
Things are always more fun when the dm loves the story they're telling
so you heal them 25% of their hp then die. they then get dealt 25% of their health as damage?
I hope to homebrew to that level some day
It's a lot of work but I just love writing so it's just an excuse for me 😂
Like it has weirdly made me very good at drawing maps
And I'm bad at drawing
hm
I heal them normally they take damage from the pool i healed them from i heal them 100 points over the campaign and suddenly im hit 20% of my health now each one will take damage 20% of the total amount healed over the campaign
Afterwards if they survive it resets
i might just be stoopy but i aint understanding lol
Yeah that wouldn't go down well with others, I'm not going to lie
I can heal them 200 hp over idk multiple sesions and if i get hit for half my damage they take half of whay i healed them
ohhhhhh
Cause like, nobody wants to take 20 dmg out of nowhere
yea
Aaaaaaa yes but it would be fun they'd habe to risk their lives so i don't take damage
My life would ne linked to theirs
i feel you would have to implement a good lore reason as to why that exists for that to work
Curse :3
Is it usually a long wait before any response about joining someone in DND? I’m new and I’m just tryna try it out fr
Bam problem solved
It could be, but people tend to like their characters and it could just become problematic if the DM wants to abuse the fact that you are the reason the party is getting draining of a good portion of health
for example an enemy spellcaster casts the spell lifelink and those effects take place
Yeah sadly, a lot of DMs kind of get backed logged a bit
Yes but f them :D
So it could be a while
Is there somewhere I should go for like quick match-ish activity?
When it comes to this server, ive seen most people not expect so many people to want to join them, so they just like.. ignore it for a bit
There's not really any such thing as a quick match activity in D&D
There are vastly more people who want to be players than DMs, so there's always a supply and demand issue
The closest thing is probably conventions where there are sometimes walk-in games
You could maybe try something like #looking-for-players where DMs will post their requests to have players
Yeah at that point it is just a matter of waiting for a reply
If you're willing, local things might be easier to get into
Preciate it everyone 🙌🏻
U guys play online or in person bdw?
Cause I'm backlogged into oblivion with sessions, though in a few weeks I'll finally be ending two campaigns. 🤘
i do both
Ive tried local before and had some real goobers that made the whole thing super cringe. So I was gonna try again since I see on YouTube and twitch some really funny and great stuff
It depends on where my players are located. Sometimes I might do in-person if they are close, but I am mainly a huge online DM
Aw man, that sucks :c
It's how the dice fall sadly, but also I wouldn't take everything you see on youtube and twitch super highly since they are like people who want to take it seriously or unseriously to make people interested.
There’s a Star Wars clone campaign I’m joining from an Arma 3 unit I’m in but I was also tryna play with rando’s online
Wowww
Yeaaa ikik, but yk
Usually stuff on youtube and twitch is between people who know eachother well too
A great point as well
I tried getting da boys on it, but there were like HELL NAH TF 😩
Shit happens
I've been there
I had the opposite, where all my friends were into dnd but I wasnt until we were all too distant to play
But then Stranger Things came out, and then suddenly they're like "so...D&D huh?"
Auch
So like it's hard, but it could happen some day
For me we met on valorant all from the same country but literally opposite sides
Largest campaign was ten players
dang :c most of my friends are interested in dnd lol
How do i convince ppl who want to play but are uncreative and undedicated to be dms bdw?
WOW U MUST BE GOOD AT THIS
fr
It's not something you can really force on people, some people just lack a drive or passion for this stuff. I was a player, who was then forced into DMing because I loved writing and playing D&D.
How'd u manage with a whiste or something? To keep em quiet
10 people is alot to manage, especially online lol i tend to max mine at about 6. 8 if im feeling chaotic
I didn't even get to play more than a campaign thst even if fun took 3h
This was in person thankfully, also, I am naturally very loud
And that's it then rest i was dm
I would never run for 10 in one game
It was a huge mistake, but we slogged through it eventually
Real test of character
U weren't build to be dm u were forged
what level did you guys get to
Who is Vecna in DND overall?
I'd say level 8-9, they started off at 2 since I didn't want bob the goblin to tap them with a stick and die
lmaoo
Ultra powerful lich who is sometimes a god
Is he important to the lore if dnd has one?
Depends on the game
oh hell yes he is lol
If you're not dealing with him, not really
I was praying and blessing my table before every session
like the general lore of dnd hes a pretty prominent character along w tiamat and stuff
Depends on the module. Wildemount and Critical Role, he is pretty important, and he has appeared in other things.
Bahaha
Rolling the dice with that one
Isn't Tiamat like a huge multi headed dragon?
But you can usually hear stuff about him within other modules that he doesn't appear in.
yes
Yeah I know him from dead by daylight
actually
Goddess of all Chromatic dragons, very evil
Ah not a bad way to know him I guess
dammit
Weeping on them
Caused a major flood in my area
You can just send it to me if you want
shes the queen of chromatic and evil dragons. she has 1 green, blue, white, black, red head. those are also the 5 types of chromatic dragons
also she was the queen of hell at one point
i could
Queen of Avernus
Sounds like pretty badass
Cause big boy Asmodeus is the King of Hell
ye shes really cool
ohh yeah he is isnt he
Love her to bits
Yep
Though I find the demons cooler
Like Demogorgon or Orcus
Demogorgon??
ye massive two headed beast (or was it three) both heads do smth pretty cool if they stare at you i can’t remember what tho
Oh damn sounds cute
They drive you to absolute madness
It has two heads, each with a rune on their heads, with tentacles, a saurian body, and some beastial features.
never actually seen a pic of asmodeus so idk whos cooler but the demons are definitely rly cool
I'll send you one
np
Btw what should I learn first when getting into dnd?
Entirely depends on whether you have a good DM or not
But a general rule of thumb is learn some of the basic rules, if you are playing learn what your class does, maybe get your character idea down, work with your DM a lot
Otherwise, a DM should help you get accustomed to major rules, how the system in general works, and can guide you through Character Creation

learn how combat works bc dnd is just travel, roleplay, and combat. roleplay is just talking with npcs and other players. and travel is pretty simple and some campaigns dont even have travel where theres a defined marching order and all that
Great advice as well
But again, if your DM is used to teaching, you should be alright in the grand scheme of things.
yea
same with if theres a dnd nerd at the table dm or no they should hopefully be able to help you out
So the best advice is not going mad with it and just taking your time to understand everything that is being said.
And soon it will become second-nature
I'm new to DND and I'm trying to find out how can I start a campaign
DMing or as a player?
Question about the combat, are the turns based off of who rolls the highest number?
@jagged sphinx player I know ow to set up a player sheet I
Combat starts witht the rolling of your initiative to see who is first in the combat order, and it goes down from there. So the turns are based off who rolls the highest.
yes. when starting combat, everyone rolls initiative. your initiative is your dexterity modifier, except for a few specific situations. everyone rolls a d20, add your initiative modifier, and if you rolled highest you go first
So one character can roll a 20, another can roll 16, and then a monster can roll 15. So the one who rolled 20 goes first, then the person who rolled 16 goes second, and then monster goes last because it rolled the lowest.
however, if the guy with a 16 has a +6 initiative modifier they will go before the one with 20, if they have a +0 or +1. also in the event of a tie, whoever has the higher initiative goes first
Then I would recommend going to the #looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm sections and putting up a post or responding to anything to see if you can land a DM. Sadly, the player to DM ratio is heavily unbalanced, so it could be a while before anyone gets back to you with an answer.
Mamalo
And if character 1 rolls 20 monster rolls 17 and character 2 rolls 7 is the monster in the middle?
yes
Exactly
See, you are already understanding it
That's great progress
yea good job ts hard
Thank you
No problem, because I was in your position for a long time
And I made the mistake of playing a spell-caster
So Combat was UBER difficult to understand for me.
same i could not understand spells for sh1t
oh no… lol
This is unrelated but Shamalamabingbang might be the greatest name I've ever seen
hehe
However just because casters are hard should not push you away from them. They are hard to understand, and some full-casters are really squishy, but the pay-off is massive.
for sure
A truer statement has never been spoken before
